ear of Mercy / Penance Services - As you know, Pope Francis announced a Jubilee Year of Mercy which began several weeks ago. One way to experience God’s gift of abundant mercy is through the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). To that end, the Catholic churches in our area are celebrating communal Penance Services for the Season of Lent and this Jubilee Year of Mercy. The dates, locations, and times are listed below. Nativity Parish’s Penance Service is the first one. If you cannot attend that Penance Service, please take note of the other services and make a point of attending the service that is most convenient for you. Monday, February 29th Nativity Parish –@ 7 pm Wed, March 2nd Mary Help of Christians, Tampa @ 7:30 pm Mon, March 7th St. Anne, Ruskin @ 7 pm – Bishop Lynch will preside Thurs, March 10th St. Francis of Assisi, Seffner @ 7 pm Fri, March 11th Our Lady of Guadalupe, Wimauma @ 7 pm Mon, March 14th Blessed Sacrament, Tampa @ 7 pm Tues, March 15th St. Stephen, Valrico @ 7 pm Wed, March 16th St. Clement, Plant City @ 7 pm Thurs, March 17th Resurrection, Valrico @ 7 pm OPE / Nativity Justice Ministry – The hallmarks of the Season of Lent are: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. The prophet Isaiah tells us what true fasting is: releasing those bound unjustly, setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke. (Isaiah 58:5-8). Nativity’s Justice Ministry, along with 20 other churches throughout Hillsborough County, work together to promote justice / systemic change in our community as the Lord and the Catholic Church require. The two issues we are working on are: Affordable Housing and Civil Citation. For more information check HOPE’s website: http://hillsboroughhope.org. This work is another way that our Church is responding to Pope Francis’ call to be witnesses of mercy to our world. The next two HOPE gatherings are listed below. For more information, please call Bonnie Ussery at the Pastoral Care Office.

ou might say that God is trying to get our attention, making an effort to get us to listen to Him and to listen carefully. That is certainly what should be happening during Lent. Today’s readings seem to highlight how God tries to reach us, but, of course, the key is that we have to be both prepared to hear the Word and to respond to it.
We have often said that God calls us. In our readings today He calls us to conversion and to repentance, both important aspects of our Lenten journeys. Imagine the lengths to which God goes to get Moses’ attention in the First Reading. The Lord knows there is no point in speaking to Moses until He has Moses’ full attention and concentration. He presents to Moses a burning bush; however, it is not a common fire; as the reading says, “As he (Moses) looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed.” That captured Moses attention, and he moved in for a closer look. That is when God spoke to Moses, when He knew He had his full attention. Because of that Moses clearly heard the message and responded. God may not be presenting us with a burning bush, but He is presenting us with a Lenten journey. It is time for us to focus on the Lord’s call to us, to give it our full awareness and consideration. In a similar fashion St. Paul is trying to get the attention of the Corinthians in our Second Reading. Paul is concerned about the people of Corinth, and, certainly, as is always the case, Paul is concerned about us as well. Speaking of the consequences of not understanding what happens if we stray from the Lord, if we do not make every effort to hear and to know and to act on what God is telling us, Paul paints a dreary picture for the Corinthians. Just as God with Moses, once St. Paul has their attention, he delivers the message he really wishes to get across — that is, beware of being too confident. Lent is a time for us to evaluate our faith and where we are. Each of us should be striving for holiness, for a greater sense of how to serve God and one another through love and stewardship. None of us can fully achieve the yearning to be free from sin. The best way to resist temptation is to acknowledge it and seek God’s help in overcoming it. During Lent we are all called to repent and to change. Jesus makes that call to repentance quite clear in our Gospel Reading from Luke, which includes the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree. Scholars maintain that God is the owner of the fig tree, and He looks to each of us to bear fruit, to do good and righteous works. Are we? Do we? That, too, is so important to us during this Lenten period. God is very patient with us but even His patience has a limit. God grants us this time in His mercy to indeed repent and to change our behaviors. Is that what we are really trying to do? The point of all these readings is that judgment is always near; it is always imminent. We are called to conversion today and now. This

is what our Lenten journey is all about. We are called, but we must listen to hear and heed that call. We are called to repentance and change. Now is the time. Sacrament Preparation
In preparation for their First Reconciliation, our Nativity Sacrament Preparation children prepared posters depicting Conflict, Resolution and Forgiveness. The posters are very well done! We invite you to stop by the Social Hall after Mass, and take a look at these beautiful posters. During this Lenten Season and especially in the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis reminds us that “God is always waiting for us, he always understands us; he always forgives us.” When we return to the Lord, Pope Francis says, God’s “attitude is that of the ‘elderly father’ who ‘saw his son coming, returning from afar’ and immediately went to meet him and ‘embrace him’. God too, ‘awaits us: always, with the door open’. Because his heart ‘isn’t closed: it’s always open’. And ‘when we arrive like the son, he embraces us, kisses us: a God who celebrates’” (Homily 10/20/15). Please pray for our children and families in the Sacrament Preparation process as they continue their preparation to come to the Table of Lord for the first time in Holy Communion in the weeks to come.

Responsibilities include developing an annual communications plan, leading the generation of content for the newsletter, email blasts, website, brochure, facebook page, etc., coordinating webpage maintenance (ensuring that new and consistent information - article links, stories, and events - is posted regularly), and managing contacts. Please contact Miguel Suarez at 503-6575 for more information.
We're Looking for Greeters
Nativity Parish is known for its warm hospitality. In order to further build up the spirit of hospitality in our church, we are looking for folks just like you to participate in our Greeter Ministry. Greeters arrive a few minutes early to church. They welcome all who come here to worship. They also help orient those who might be new to our parish community. This is an easy, and powerful ministry. It is perfect for families to do together. Yet, it is also something that individuals can do as well. We will be signing up new greeters after the Masses this weekend. If you would like more information about serving in this ministry, please contact Tim Bergevin (813-748-4146) or Cindy Ehringer (813-681-4608) our parish volunteer coordinator.

The main theme of the retreat is to discover or rediscover Jesus in our lives, and the importance of women ministering to women. The retreat will take place the weekend of March 18-20, 2016 at the Franciscan Center in Tampa. The cost is $195.00 and includes transportation and all meals.

FEBRUARY 28TH, 2016
