h No, Not Again Today begins Daylight Savings Time. I’m not really a fan of the twice-a-year time changes, as you can probably guess from the title of this column. It makes little sense to me to “spring forward” at this time of year and “fall back” in November. But I know plenty of people who love Daylight Savings Time. They love the added sunlight in the evenings. And for them, it seems that the sunlight which extends later into the evenings, gives the impression that they actually have a bit more of life to live. I must admit that it is interesting that Daylight Savings Time comes about around the Solemnity of Easter. As you know, Easter is just two weeks away. While there is more sunlight than darkness this time of year, the approaching celebration of Easter reminds us of the “Sonlight” that Jesus brings into our lives. With Christ present in our lives, the darkness of sin and evil has no hold on us. The “Sonlight” of Christ enlightens our minds and enlivens our hearts. The Season of Lent has been a time to allow the light and life of Jesus Christ to permeate our lives and issue forth in our actions. The works of Lent are never ends unto themselves. Rather, they help us to turn away from sin and live lives that more perfectly reflect the light and love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. ~ Fr. Tapp

~ P. Tapp

Palm Sunday is Next Week Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. These may be returned to the church, or kept for the year. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are appropriately gathered at the church and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the following year's Ash Wednesday observance.

Help Support Catholic Relief Services This weekend, March 12th and 13th, 5% of our total collection at Nativity Catholic Church will be donated to Catholic Relief services. Our donation supports six Catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from your donation help provide food to the hungry, welcome and support to displaced refugees, and advocacy for the voiceless. Please consider this as you give.

What is Operation Rice Bowl? Operation Rice bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program. Just as we celebrate the Eucharist on Sundays, we can use Operation Rice bowl as a way to “break bread” together with family and loved ones. Where does our donation go? 75 percent of your gifts to Operation Rice Bowl go to Catholic Relief Services to fund development projects overseas and Lenten education efforts in the United States. 25 percent of your gifts to Operation Rice Bowl remain in our Diocese to help fund local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts. Through these efforts, we assist people in our own communities as well as in communities around the world. What do we do with our donation? Please turn in your family’s Rice Bowl donation on or before March 30. You may bring it to the Religious Education office, or you may drop it in the collection basket (envelopes only) on Sunday. If you choose to drop it in the collection basket at Saturday evening or Sunday Mass, please mark your envelope – FAITH FORMATION - OPERATION RICE BOWL.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Weekly Reflection (courtesy of catholicsteward.com) Is 43: 16-21; Ps 126: 1-6; Phil 3: 8-14; Jn 8: 1-11

O

ur Lenten journeys are reaching an end, or at least they should be. Have we made the effort expected of us to make changes, to truly seek to continue our conversion? Today’s readings serve as reminders to us of what Lent means and what we should have been striving to do for the past several weeks. The prophet Isaiah often provides good advice to us through his revelations of the Words of God. In today’s First Reading God declares, “Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new.” At the beginning of this Lenten season we were asked to do the same thing, but the question is, “Are we really doing something new?” It is not too late for us to do that. It is not too late for us to make the kinds of changes — the conversions — we need to make. However, now is the time, not later. One of the ways for us to bring about these conversions is to come to “know” Jesus. This can only be accomplished by carefully preparing and praying and reflecting. In the Second Reading, St. Paul speaks of how he has come to know Jesus, how he (Paul) has developed the deep relationship with the Lord which is necessary. Do we know Jesus? “Knowing” Him does not simply mean that we are familiar with His story and His significance to us. We may be aware of much about Jesus, but to truly “know” Him requires something much deeper. Paul makes reference to knowing Jesus and the “power of His resurrection.” That is an important aspect of what we are doing in preparation for Easter — coming to fully know the “power of His resurrection.” Jesus is conveying this power to us right now, during Lent. It is a life-giving power. Just as He approaches his death and resurrection, we do the same. The other way of “knowing” Jesus to which Paul makes reference is the “sharing of His sufferings.” We, too, should be moving toward Calvary. It is not just a question of following Jesus, but we are called to be “in” Him at this time. St. Paul also said in his letter to the Romans, “If children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Rom 8:17) As we complete our Lenten preparations, we must remember that being in Christ also means being in His death. That sense of identifying with Christ culminates in our Gospel Reading from St. John. This Gospel relates one of the best-known stories relating to Jesus’ mercy, the story of the accused adulteress, whom the Pharisees use to again test Jesus. Perhaps the most common quote we hear from this Gospel is “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” In this Year of Mercy, and especially

5 during Lent, it is well for us to remember that we are called to love, not be judgmental. There are so many times in our lives, and so many people in our lives who have borne judgment from us. Not only is this a time for mercy, but also it is important for us to be forgiving, as Jesus is. This can be our way of doing “something new”; of being one with Jesus and knowing Him as He would have us do; and most important, to find forgiveness in our hearts and to reconcile with those from whom we may be alienated. God loves us, and we must love others.

Kids Pray, Serve, and Give Mackenzie helped fold laundry with Mommy. Isaiah gave his friend Swedish fish. Elle did her homework without complaining. Haley comforted her mommy when she was sad.

The final numbers are in!

Even with three days of inclement weather during the 46th Annual Novemberfest, we still raised $155,921.56 to benefit the students of Nativity Catholic School, Faith Formation and Youth Ministry. We would like to thank our many dedicated volunteers and helping to make this event successful. A special thank you to all our sponsors and vendors who gave so generously to Novemberfest. From the Novemberfest Committee: THANK YOU!

Faith Formation Class Update Changes to Wednesday evening class schedule: Please note that we do NOT have class on Wednesday, March 16th, due to Hillsborough County Spring Pam Emery, Break. We are also out on Wednesday, Religious Education March 23rd, which is Holy Week. However, WE DO have class on Wednesday, March 30th.

Sunday class schedule: No class next Sunday, March 20th due to Palm Sunday and no class on Easter Sunday, March 27th.

Our Holy Father reminds us to celebrate Lent as “a privileged moment to experience God’s mercy – to rediscover the merciful face of the Father.” May our merciful Father be with you as you continue the discipline of Lent and prayerfully prepare for the great feast of Easter!

Reflecting on the Word for families: John’s Gospel says that God sent Jesus into the world not to condemn it but to offer eternal life. In our Gospel story today, Jesus refuses to condemn the sinful woman but offers her forgiveness. He will do the same for us! On the way home from Mass, discuss the following: Why is Jesus so willing to forgive us?

Pastoral Care

Little Flowers and Blue Knights Little Flowers Girls' Club and Blue Knights Boys' Club are clubs for girls and boys ages 5 and up that teach virtues through scripture, saints' biographies and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Did he say Exorcism?

During the Scrutinies, celebrated as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation, the parish community joins with the Elect, who will be baptized at the Easter vigil, in examining our lives to uncover the places and occasions of sin. Special prayers, called Exorcisms are prayed aloud over the Elect just prior to the priest celebrant laying hands on each individual. These prayers of exorcism ask God for His blessing and grace that the Elect may be able to examine their consciences, seek a purity of heart and be free of the evil in their lives that leads them to sin. Laying on of hands is a sign of our sincere desire that they may be reconVicki Hawkins, ciled and healed by the saving actions of Adult Faith Formation Jesus Christ.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Reflexión Semanal (cortesía de catholicsteward.com) Is 43, 16-21; Sal 126: 1-6; Flp 3, 8-14; Jn 8: 1-11

¿Conocemos nosotros a Jesús?
