Divine Mercy
Misericordia Divina
On April 30, 2000, St. (Pope) John Paul II declared that this Sunday – the Second Sunday of Easter – be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday” throughout the Universal Church. The notion of “Divine Mercy” finds its roots in the diary of St. Faustina – a Polish sister who was revered by St. John Paul II. St. Faustina’s diary speaks about the gift of divine mercy that is offered to all. Specifically, she calls the faithful to receive the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance on or around that day in order to experience the fullness of God’s abundant mercy. Last December, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. For sure, Pope Francis would endorse the reverent reception of Holy Communion as well as the Sacrament of Penance. In these two sacramental experiences, the mercy of Christ is preeminent. But, in his letter on mercy (Misericordiae Vultus), I believe that Pope Francis is also challenging the Church to broaden its understanding of divine mercy. He states more than once that divine mercy is not just something we receive. It is also something we extend to others. These realities are two sides of the same coin – God extending his mercy to us and the mercy we extend to others. Together, they represent the fullness of what divine mercy is or should be. I’ve written in this column once before that the word “mercy” means “having a compassionate heart.” Surely, that’s something we want God to extend to us. But it is also something that we must extend to others, if we are to be considered true Christians. In his Chrism Mass homily, Bishop Lynch talked about the many and varied ways by which such virtue should be lived. In particular, he called all Catholics in our diocese to have a compassionate heart toward the poor, the immigrant, and those who live a way of life that might even be at odds with our own. While we are strengthened by the sacramental celebrations of Eucharist and Reconciliation, we witness the reality of what we receive by how we extend and use those graces for others. On this Divine Mercy Sunday and throughout this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we should not only focus on what we wish to receive from our merciful God, but we should also make a similar effort to extend God’s mercy to all. The Lord Jesus said as much when he proclaimed: For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful. (Luke 6: 32, 36)
(Lucas 6:32,6)

What is Divine Mercy Sunday? Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday) is a relatively new addition to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day that he canonized Saint Faustina. A plenary indulgence (the forgiveness of all temporal punishment resulting from sins that have already been confessed) is granted on the Feast of Divine Mercy to all the faithful who go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and "in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. 'Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!')." A partial indulgence (the remission of some temporal punishment from sin) is granted to the faithful "who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation."
Our Priests & Seminarian Have Talent!
Next week, you don’t want to miss Mass and the special edition announcement video where you’ll preview our version of Nativity Has Talent! Fr. Tapp, Fr. Victor, Fr. Nelson and Kyle ask for your support and your vote! That’s right! Back by popular demand, YOU have the power to decide who will showcase their talent by casting your pledge vote, and YOU decide whose video will be released from the vault on April 9th and 10th.
While APA is always fun for us here at Nativity, your commitment to the 2016 Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA) truly helps our parish community to “do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” Micah 6:8. Fulfilling your pledges results in Nativity keeping more offertory dollars here to use at our parish. 1,026 families have already made a commitment and As of March 22, 2016 pledged their support to Nativity and to APA. That’s incredible! We need your support if you haven’t pledged yet! If you have pledged $329,375 of $470,000 Goal Pledged = 70.08% in past years and haven’t this year, you’ll receive a letter asking you to renew your $165,311 paid already. 1% tithe to APA. I ask your family to truly consider this worthwhile cause or making 2016 the year you begin. If you’ve pledged and sent in your tithe to 1,026 Parish Families Participating = 15.43% APA already, THANK YOU! If you’ve made a monthly commitment, THANK YOU for continuing your support! Know you directly support evangelization efforts like our Diocesan radio ministry, WBVM 90.5 SpiritFM, that you heard John or Abby speak about in January. You support our seminarian’s education (Kyle says thank you!), Migrant Ministries like the San Jose Mission and Catholic Charities, Faith Formation programs for our youth through Religious Education, tuition assistance for Nativity Catholic School, and programs for Pastoral Care and Youth Ministry. I am also personally grateful for the administrative resources APA provides, that is the Diocesan staff. Nativity directly benefits from their expertise, guidance, and consultation, and I enjoy working with the many wonderful people there as much as our own staff. **Parish Pride note— Out of 78 parishes & missions in our Diocese, Nativity ranks #1 in pledges. Visit our website and watch our own special APA video if you haven’t already. http://www.nativitycatholicchurch.org/apa With my personal thanks, Rob Martin, Director Finance & Operations

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Weekly Reflection (courtesy of catholicsteward.com)
Acts 5: 12-16; Ps 118: 2-4, 13-15, 22-24; Rev 1: 9-11A, 12-13, 17-19; Jn 20: 19-31
This Sunday, the Sunday of Divine Mercy (or the Second Sunday of Easter), was officially designated by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000 at the Canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska. This is a very special Sunday when Jesus through the Church offers forgiveness of all sins and punishment to those who have gone to confession and who receive the Eucharist on this holy day. It was just a little more than a year ago that Pope Francis announced his intent for the Jubilee Year of Mercy with these words: “It’s a journey that starts with a spiritual conversion. For this reason I have decided to declare an Extraordinary Jubilee that has the mercy of God at its center. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy.” The “official” announcement of the Year of Mercy, however, occurred on this Divine Mercy Sunday last year. From the beginning of his time as our Pope, our Holy Father Francis has had “mercy” as an ongoing theme. This Year of Mercy is directed at three groups of people: 1. Each of us as members of the Church; 2. The clergy; 3. Everyone in the world. Today’s celebration should bring all this in focus if it has not already. We are called to look into our own hearts and recognize our need for God’s mercy. Today should be a day of jubilation that God’s mercy is so free and open to us. Mercy, you see, is not earned; it is given unreservedly. The readings on this Holy Day all reflect that theme of mercy. Our First Reading is drawn from the Acts of the Apostles and it declares the works, the acts that is, of the Apostles in the early days. They go about the countryside performing “signs and wonders.” In effect it declares that “they all were cured,” meaning God’s love and forgiveness is available and open to everyone, absolutely everyone. There is no limit and no restrictions on God’s mercy. Have you ever heard of an “out of body experience?” This may be what John experienced as reflected in the Second Reading from Revelation. Whatever the circumstances, it was a unique experience for John. Scholars agree that the voice John heard was the voice of Jesus, a voice with which John would have been very familiar. John sees Jesus in all His glory, and he receives instructions from Him to write a book of what he has seen and witnessed. Witness to faith, witness to the Lord, are important parts of a stewardship experience. Each of us, like John, is called to witness. This is the first time, as recorded in Revelation, that John is commanded by the Lord to write. However, he receives that command eleven more times in this Book. It is difficult to really ascertain exactly what John thought and felt at that moment. John was overcome and in awe. Here was Christ in all His glory! John had spent three years with the Lord while He was among them. John reports that Jesus “touched me with
5 His right hand and said, ‘Do not be afraid’.” This is the God of love, the God of mercy, who comforts in compassion. The Gospel from the Book of John would seemingly be one of the results of the command to write what John has seen. Much of the attention on this Gospel has been given to Didymus, the Apostle Thomas, and the resulting term “doubting Thomas.” However, the meaning in terms of mercy is much deeper than that. When Jesus appears among the Apostles, the Lord’s first words are “Peace be with you.” These are the words of a forgiving and merciful Father. They may have expected to be scolded for their desertion of Jesus on Good Friday; nevertheless, the Lord comes with words of reconciliation. Jesus commissions them, just as He has commissioned each of us, to continue His work on earth. The Lord blesses them with the Holy Spirit and breathes new life into them, just as His Father breathed life into all of humankind at the time of creation. He grants them, and thus the Church’s priests and clergy, the authority to forgive. We can be forgiven; God’s mercy extends to each of us.

Don’t Drink the Holy Water & Other Manners at Mass Holy water – At the entrance to each Catholic Church, we find some type of receptacle filled with blessed water. At Nativity, the Baptismal font is located in the Narthex, and small Holy Water Fonts (bowl-like containers) are mounted near each church entrance. As Catholics, we dip the tips of one or two fingers into the water and bless ourselves (make the sign of the cross) as we enter the church as a renewal of our baptismal commitment. Parents can bless babies or toddlers by dipping a finger in holy water and tracing the sign of the cross on the child’s forehead.
Summer Religious Education Program Middle School Program (entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) This two week program, along with elect follow up evening sessions and parish events during the year, will help you and your student continue religious education and keep up with your busy schedule. Classes will run from June 13th to the 24th Monday - Friday, 8:30am to 12:30pm. Alternative to weekly Religious Education Classes

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Easter celebration of initiation of new Catholics ushers in the last period of the RCIA, the period of post-baptismal teaching, or mystagogy. The period of mystagogy is a time for meditation on the Gospel. During the period of mystagogy, the faithful once again extend joyful welcome to the neophytes, who are now fully initiated members of the Christian community. As the faithful extend hospitality to the newly baptized there is a renewal of inspiration and outlook for all members.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
