Happy Easter!
We continue to celebrate this wonderful season long after the world has moved on and the grocery store shelves have been cleared of Peeps and Robin Eggs. Easter is a season (50 days long) that celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus and reminds us of the mercy of God, mercy that always allows for something new: new life, new possibilities, new victories, new adventures. It’s not a coincidence that Easter falls during the season of Spring, when the world is filled with new beginnings. Sometimes this ‘newness’ is painful (I’m looking at you, pollen). Remember that Jesus had to suffer on the Cross and die before he experienced the Resurrection. It is in light of this truth that I am writing this week’s bulletin article to share with you some bittersweet news. When I was in seminary a long, long time ago, I began a conversation with Bishop Lynch about the possibility of one day going back to school for further education. I have to admit that I’m the type of person who really enjoys learning and teaching, and I've reminded the Bishop every so often about these desires. Well, the time has finally come, the “one day” is finally here - I’m going back to school. At the end of the summer I will be moving to Rome to get a degree in Sacred Liturgy! This new opportunity is very exciting, and I’m honored that Bishop Lynch has given me this chance, but of course there is also pain. It’s hard to say goodbye. Don’t worry, I will continue to be here at Nativity until the end of June so we still have plenty of time together. Thank you for the many ways you have allowed me to share God’s message of mercy with you and your families. Thank you for the many ways you have shown me God’s mercy. Thank you for allowing me to walk with you on this part of our journeys together. I look forward to what God has in store, to the adventures we have yet to discover as we answer his invitation to follow him!
¡Felices Pascuas!
It’s time for our 2nd “pitch.” If you haven’t donated to APA yet, fill out an envelope in the pew next week, and place it in the bin for the priest/seminarian you’d like to see perform. Who will win the total tally? Fr. Tapp? Fr. Victor? Fr. Nelson? Kyle? Videos and Voting next week!

Thanks to our Come Clean Volunteers
We’d like to thank our wonderful volunteer ministries which clean our sacred spaces each week in preparation for our services. The job is much bigger than our limited maintenance staff can handle, and this group (you’ll see them on the schedule as Come Clean: Church & Chapel) does a fantastic job helping with those large, and very important, spaces. If you would like to get involved, call the Church Office to find out the times, or come up here on a Thursday morning to help out!

The Easter Season
The Easter Season refers to the Great Fifty Days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday, a celebration of our participation in Christ’s resurrection which brings us from the death of sin to a life of grace. Its last ten days (Ascension Thursday [May 5 – observed in our Diocese on May 8] through Pentecost) focus on the promise of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The fiftieth day (pente-) is seven (the perfect number) squared plus one (the first day of the New Life).
The Solemnity of Pentecost is May 15
Pentecost celebrates the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit to the Church to act as teacher, counselor, advocate, and helper – the one who will show us how to speak. The image of the disciples locked in the upper room out of fear is well known and well loved. The Holy Spirit comes into that situation and touches the disciples so profoundly that they go out from their locked room, into the world, to proclaim Jesus Christ with courage and strength. The roots of Pentecost can be found in the Jewish Festival of Weeks (Shavu’ot), the 50 day celebration following Passover (Exodus 34:22). It was a harvest festival in which the first fruits were offered in praise and thanksgiving to God. Acts records that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples when the festival of Pentecost was fulfilled (Acts 2:1-11). The early Christians saw in this an image of the Church itself as a first fruit of Jesus’ Resurrection.
Inquiry into the Catholic Faith
This week begins another series of Inquiry classes into the Catholic Faith. If you, or anyone you know, has wondered about becoming a full member of the Catholic Church, this is the best place to start. Here, the interested can ask questions and get answers. As members of the Church, we should pray for the hearts and minds of those we’d rejoice to see become a part of the beautiful faith we hold so dear, including those currently in the inquiry sessions.

Second Half of the Gospel of Luke
A study of the Gospel of Luke (second half) will begin April 11th. Led by Kyle Bell, this study will offer insights into Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and show the inclusiveness of his love even for those who persecute him. Pre-registration is helpful but not necessary. The study guide is $13 and can be purchased ahead of the starting session in the Faith Formation Office during normal business hours.
Who is Marriage Encounter for?
It’s for anybody who believes that marriage is the most important relationship on earth. It’s for handyman dads and soccer moms, for emptynesters and just-past-newlyweds, and for everyone in between. It’s for the couples who know they have it good and want to make it even better—it’s for couples like you. A Marriage Encounter experience is for anybody who knows there’s always more to learn about each other, and that it’s the weekends away that spice things up at home. Most of all, Marriage Encounter is for anyone who believes they made the right choice on their wedding day and every day after. Couples who have been married a few years attend Marriage Encounter weekends along with couples that have been married a few decades—there’s no age limit on a great marriage! For more information about taking a private time away, check out www.wwmetampabay.org or call 813-270-7832! The next WorldWide Marriage Encounter weekend is April 29-May 1 at the Franciscan Retreat Center in Tampa.
Brothers in Christ
This ministry meets every Thursday morning from 6:00 to 6:50 AM in Social Hall A. Our meetings involve spiritual growth activities such as reading and meditating on the following Sunday’s readings and listening to live talks and media presentations concerning faith issues facing men every day. Our group also engages in service and prayer to support the larger faith community. All men of the parish are welcome and urged to attend. This has been a “game changer” for many. Refreshments are provided. For more information contact Don Cseh at 813-309-7690.

Feed the Bay
Feed the Bay is a coordinated community outreach uniting churches throughout Hillsborough County along with Publix Super Markets, designed to stock the shelves of participating food pantries on Saturday, April 16 & Sunday, April 17, 2016. How Does Feed The Bay Work? On Sunday, April 17, each church congregation will be given a grocery list at their worship services. Leaders of each church will challenge their congregation to go shop at participating Publix Super Markets or other stores closest to their home between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for the benefit of those in need in our communities. Shoppers and their families take the list to a grocery store to purchase whatever items they choose to buy. After shopping, they drop their purchase off to volunteers located at semi-trucks parked in lots right outside the participating stores. Volunteers then load the food on the trucks. It’s that simple. Stop by the Social Hall this weekend to get a preview of the shopping list and find out more about Feed the Bay and our Nativity Outreach Ministry.
Third Sunday of Easter
Weekly Reflection (courtesy of catholicsteward.com) Acts 5: 27-32, 40B-41; Ps 30: 2, 4-6, 11-13; Rev 5: 11-14; Jn 21: 1-19
On this Third Sunday of Easter Jesus instructs Peter to “Feed my lambs,” and “Tend my sheep.” These are instructions for us as well, making it clear to us that we have a responsibility to more than ourselves; we also are called to care for and most especially love those around us. The Easter Season is actually from Easter Sunday to Pentecost — 50 days! And is celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday”. These above all others are the days for the singing of the Alleluia. The paschal candle, a symbol of the presence of the risen Christ among the people of God, remains in the sanctuary near the altar or ambo through Pentecost Sunday. Our readings on this Third Sunday of Easter augment the continuance of the Easter season and our Easter celebrations. The First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles continues the narrative of what happened after Jesus’ death and resurrection, what the Apostles did and where and how they did it. This reading speaks specifically of how the Apostles were brought before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, because they (the Apostles) had not conformed to the orders they had received. The key question and answer in this reading for us is when the Sanhedrin pose to the Apostles, “We gave you strict orders, did we not, to stop teaching in Jesus’ name?” Peter’s reply is important to us, but especially significant during this Easter season. “We must obey God rather than men…We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” This is a bold answer, but it is based upon the faith of the Apostles. Is our faith strong enough to hold to our beliefs in the face sometimes of a society that contradicts it? The Book of Revelation, from which our Second Reading is drawn, can be sometimes confusing and unclear to us. Nevertheless, within today’s reading are some clauses and statements that supplement well the First Reading. For example, John hears the angels cry out, “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” The term “forever and ever” appears 23 times in the New Testament. In every instance it is the translation of the Greek phrase eis tous aionas ton aionon, which means literally “into the age of the ages.” The point is, of course, that we are dealing with eternity, something of which we should never lose sight. We are reminded often in Scripture that we are citizens of Heaven more so than citizens of earth and need to always keep that in mind. That is why, as in the First Reading, faith can sustain so much in this world. The living God reigns eternally and the Apostles knew that. Even the Caesars of ancient times came and went, but the Lord lives “forever and ever.”
5 The Gospel Reading from the Book of St. John relates how Jesus appeared to the Apostles for the third time after His Resurrection. As is always the case with Holy Scripture, there is much in this Gospel to absorb and appreciate. We would call your attention, however, to that moment when Jesus seems to challenge St. Peter by asking “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” When St. Peter assures Him that he does, Jesus says to him simply “Feed my lambs.” We are His lambs. It is fascinating to note that three times Jesus asks Peter this question. You might think, and perhaps would not be far off, that Jesus is recalling that Peter denied Him three times on the night before He was crucified. Now He gives Peter three opportunities to redeem himself. Just as for Peter, following Jesus involves serving His lambs, serving others. If we are truly stewards of who and what we are and if we are stewards in the service of Christ, we, too, will assure the Lord of our love and devotion. That is how we need to respond to the call to “Follow me.”

Don’t Drink the Holy Water
& Other Manners at Mass WHAT IS GENUFLECTION AND WHY DO WE DO IT? Before entering the pews, Catholics pause and genuflect (bend the right knee all the way to the floor). The word genuflect is from the Latin genu flexo, meaning on bended knee. As we genuflect, we point our bodies toward the tabernacle, which houses the consecrated Hosts – the Body of Jesus. This special act of reverence is a sign of the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of Jesus. If genuflection is not physically possible, then a reverential (deep) bow may be substituted. As our Catechists often say “remember children, that you are bowing before Christ the King, (not curtseying before a queen), so your right knee should bend all the way to the floor. WHAT THEN? As Catholics first enter the pew, after genuflecting in the aisle, we kneel and pray silently. Kneeling is a posture of both penance and adoration, and thus an appropriate posture as we enter God’s presence.

Third Sunday of Easter

No Tome El Agua Bendita

Feed The Bay (Alimentar A La Bahía)
¿Cómo funciona Feed The Bay?
