2 It’s APA Time! – Several months ago our parish promoted the Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA), which benefits the good and merciful works throughout the Diocese of St. Petersburg and in our parish. APA contributions assist our school, youth ministry, migrant ministry, and much more. Many of our parishioners have already made a pledge. Out of 6500 registered families at nativity parish, 1030 have already made a pledge. That’s a 16% participation rate. We are asking ALL parishioners to make a contribution. No gift is too small or too large. Envelopes are in the pews. And we’ve added a little incentive to help us reach our goal of $469,000. Watch the video boards at Mass for details. Congratulations, Bill Ulbricht! – Pope Francis has conferred the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (for the Church and the Pope) award upon Bill Ulbricht. Bill and his family are long time parishioners of Nativity Parish. Bishop Lynch will present that award at a ceremony on Sunday, April 17th. Bishop Lynch has stated that Bill is being recognized for his service to the local and diocesan church – both here at Nativity Parish and as CEO of St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. We congratulate you, Bill, and your family on this auspicious occasion. May God continue to bless you and the great work you do. “Xavy” Castro Ordained – Congratulations to Xavy Castro who was ordained a transitional deacon for the Diocese of St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 16th at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. Xavy is the son of Diacono Elix and Luz Castro who minister here at Nativity Parish and throughout the area. What a wonderful and unique scenario where Father and Son now serve together as deacons in our diocese! Our prayers and best wishes go out to Deacon Xavy and his family on this wonderful occasion. ~Fr. Tapp
~P. Tapp
It’s time for our 2nd “pitch.” If you haven’t donated to APA yet, fill out an envelope in the pew this week, and place it in the bin for the priest/seminarian you’d like to see perform. Who will win the total tally? Fr. Tapp?
Fr. Victor?
Fr. Nelson?

3 What’s this ‘Apostolic Exhortation’ in the news?
via Catholic blogger Jimmy Akin An apostolic exhortation is a pastoral document in which the pope exhorts the Church. Although it contains doctrine, its primary focus is pastoral care. (Apostolic exhortations are different from encyclicals, which do focus on doctrine.) Amoris Laetitia (Latin, “the joy of love”), is what is known as a “post-synodal apostolic exhortation.” It was written in response to two meetings of the synod of bishops—one held in 2014 and one in 2015, both of which were devoted to the subject of the family. When a pope issues an apostolic exhortation in response to a meeting of the synod of bishops (a gathering of bishops from around the world), it is called a post-synodal (“after the synod”) apostolic exhortation. At the two synods of bishops, two subjects of discussion were the pastoral care of those who are divorced and civilly remarried and of people with a homosexual orientation. Although these are not the focus of Amoris Laetitiae—they represent only a small part of what it has to say—they are the subjects many people will be most interested to know about. In discussing the dignity and mission of the family, the Synod Fathers observed that, “as for proposals to place unions between homosexual persons on the same level as marriage, there are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family.” It is unacceptable “that local Churches should be subjected to pressure in this matter and that international bodies should make financial aid to poor countries dependent on the introduction of laws to establish ‘marriage’ between persons of the same sex” (AL 250-251). And that’s it. Contrary to the hopes of some, the document did not attempt to reframe the Church’s teaching on samesex activity or same-sex unions. After reviewing a variety of defective marital situations in which people may find themselves, the document states: If we consider the immense variety of concrete situations such as those I have mentioned, it is understandable that neither the Synod nor this exhortation could be expected to provide a new set of general rules, canonical in nature and applicable to all cases (AL 300). Instead of propose a specific and concrete solution to the problem of civilly divorced and remarried persons, the document articulates a set of principles to be applied to the pastoral care of such individuals. The chapter discussing them is lengthy, so we can’t cover them fully, but they include: Not watering down the Church’s teaching on marriage Helping people grow toward realizing the Church’s teaching on marriage in their own lives Recognizing that people in defective situations are not all in the same situation Helping integrate such people into the life of the Church, based on what is possible in their individual cases

Fourth Sunday of Easter
Weekly Reflection (courtesy of catholicsteward.com) Acts 13: 14, 43-52; Ps 100: 1-3, 5; Rev 7: 9, 14B-17; Jn 10: 27-30
Today’s readings contrast the discouraging experience of Sts. Paul and Barnabas in the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles to the Glory of Heaven reflected in the Second Reading from the Book of Revelations to the brief but definitive assurance we receive from Jesus Himself in the Gospel Reading from John. At the beginning of the First Reading Paul and Barnabas find themselves in Antioch in Pisidia after departing from Perga. Perga is a city on coast and Antioch is some 135 miles distance from there located in the mountains in the area called Galatia (you may recall Paul’s Letter to the Galatians). There is some scholarly thought that Paul headed to the mountains for health reasons. Regardless, he and Barnabas initially received acceptance and enthusiasm in relation to their message of Jesus Christ, but then were rejected and banished from the region of Antioch. If we learn nothing else about Paul and his faith, we learn how devoted and determined he was, how strong and unfailing his faith tended to be. The message for us, of course, is that we need to achieve that same level of determination and commitment felt by Paul. St. Paul found a joy and happiness in his faith — something that we need to strive for, as well. That happiness is within reach for us but we must make an effort to attain it. St. John’s remarkable vision, as reported in the Second Reading from Revelations is filled with insights into Heaven for us. For those in Heaven there is an immediate presence of God. Those in Heaven can approach God and be with Him. There are no obstructions or obstacles. God dwells there “among His people.” It is impossible for us to conceive of this, which is why this particular Scriptural passage may seem so unworldly to us. In the Psalms David sang, “May I dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.” That is our desire as well and that is fulfilled in Heaven, not on earth. Our focus needs to always be on Heaven, certainly during this glorious Easter season. As is also reported in this Second Reading, “The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them.” This is truly paradise and that is our ultimate goal. “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” It almost produces a vision of a loving mother wiping away the tears from the eyes of a child and providing that everlasting comfort. That happens in Heaven nevertheless. If we ask Him and trust in Him, God can provide comfort to us now, but in Heaven he will wipe away our sorrows and pains forever. The Gospel Reading from St. John is in keeping with the clichéd phrase “short and sweet.” Even though the Gospel
5 Reading is not lengthy, the Lord makes some things very clear to us. He reaffirms what we have heard in the Second Reading when He says of His sheep, His flock, His followers, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” This is Heaven as referenced in Revelations. This eternal life is greater than and far beyond what we can imagine having only experienced physical life. Eternal life is never-ending. “No one can take them out of my hand.” As followers of the Lord, as disciples, we know that He will take care of us, that we are safe in His Hands. It is this safety and security that can hold us up when we face the challenges outlined in the First Reading. It is comforting to know that the Hands that created the world created us also, and it is those Hands that keep us safe and hold on to us always.

Who is Marriage Encounter for?
It’s for anybody who believes that marriage is the most important relationship on earth. It’s for handyman dads and soccer moms, for emptynesters and just-past-newlyweds, and for everyone in between. It’s for the couples who know they have it good and want to make it even better—it’s for couples like you. A Marriage Encounter experience is for anybody who knows there’s always more to learn about each other, and that it’s the weekends away that spice things up at home. Most of all, Marriage Encounter is for anyone who believes they made the right choice on their wedding day and every day after. Couples who have been married a few years attend Marriage Encounter weekends along with couples that have been married a few decades—there’s no age limit on a great marriage! For more information about taking a private time away, check out www.wwmetampabay.org or call 813-270-7832! The next WorldWide Marriage Encounter weekend is April 29-May 1 at the Franciscan Retreat Center in Tampa.

Fourth Sunday of Easter
