hristmas Lists – Most of us make lists of things we want or need to buy at Christmas. But here’s a list of things that you might check out during these remaining weeks of Advent…

audete Sunday – This third week of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday. The word “gaudete” comes from the Latin which means “rejoice.” We rejoice at this time of year because the celebration of the birth of Christ draws closer and closer. And, we wait with joyful expectation to the coming of Christ at the end of time when He will make all things new.

P

enance Service – The readings at Mass this time of year often focus on the figure of St. John the Baptist. St John is fond of telling us to “prepare a way for the Lord.” One of the ways we do that is by participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our parish Penance Service will be celebrated on Monday, December 14th at 7pm. There will be over 10 priests from various parishes to celebrate the sacrament with us. Please join us for this celebration of reconciliation and healing.

Y

S

ear of Mercy – On December 8th, Pope Francis announced the beginning of a Year of Mercy. When we think of “mercy” we probably first think of forgiveness or the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But mercy is so much more. Think in terms of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Have you forgotten what they are? Then a little Advent Project for you might be to look them up and ask yourself how they can become a part of your daily living.

A

etirement for Religious – Many religious Sisters (think of those that taught you back in grade school) have no means of financial support during their retirement years. To help support them, parishes throughout the United States take up a collection to assist those Sisters. This weekend we will tithe a portion of our Offertory Collection to these Sisters who can use our assistance. Thank you for your generosity to them.

R

R

Year Of Mercy Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,

Shout for joy!” With that exclamation our First Reading from the prophet Zephaniah begins. We are told to “Sing joyfully” and to “Be glad and exult” as well. St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians proclaims, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!” Why are we so joyous? St. John the Baptist explains it in our Gospel Reading from St. Luke: “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming.” Indeed…the Lord is coming, and soon, and that is why we are called to “Rejoice” on this Third Sunday of Advent which is called Gaudete Sunday by the Church. Gaudete means “Rejoice.” Even our Responsorial Psalm includes “Cry out with joy and gladness.” Christ came among us, and that is why we celebrate Christmas with such a sense of delight. The prophet Zephaniah also declares, “…the King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you have no further misfortune to fear.” There should be something comfortable about the coming of Christ, His birth on Christmas. We may get caught up in challenges and sorrows which are part of our lives, but the point of Advent is for us to prepare for the incredible Christmas gift of Jesus Christ. Today is a day which reminds us of that. The First Reading reminds us that God sings, too, because of each of us. The image of God singing is not one we have very often unfortunately; however, that is our Lord completely. He sings over and because of us; He feels joy which we provide, so that He breaks into song. At least that is what we need to be striving for — that is what our preparations for Christmas should mean to Him. St. Paul’s joy that he proclaims and encourages us to share in the Second Reading is also based upon the presence of Christ. We speak often of stewardship, of a way of life where people give of themselves, of what they may have, their time, their talent, and their treasure, out of love and a sense of service to others. It is said that stewardship people are happy people, people who have a strong sense of trust in God, and who view things in a positive way. That is what Paul wants us to do as well. Paul tells us “Your kindness should be known to all.” The Greek word which Paul used for “kindness” was epieikeia which can be translated as patience, a softness of heart, modesty, forbearance, a magnanimous feeling toward others. That, too, is what our Advent preparations should reflect. They should prepare us for what is in reality the Christmas Spirit, a true sense of elation reflected in how we live our lives and how we treat others.

Are these not the same things we try to teach children? Sometimes when we get older, and bit more callous, we forget that this is the attitude we are expected to have, the way to live our lives as Christians and Catholics. Now, Advent, is the time to make that conversion, that change, that repentance. As John indicates, we have been baptized by the Lord with “the Holy Spirit and fire.” The Lord has the

Pope Francis believes that by making mercy our highest priority, the church will uncover the authentic experience of the Gospel that alone can help so many of us to know God for the first time. He also seeks that the Bishops of the church move from an emphasis on their juridical, doctrinal and hierarchical roles to their primary identity as apostles, shepherds and pastors. Stories of mercy We can hear the challenges to mercy in the parables Jesus addressed to the good people of his time. We also hear the anguish in his voice as he appealed to them to grasp the words of Hosea 6:6: “Go and learn the meaning of the words, I seek mercy not sacrifice. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Mt 9:13).

Jesus challenged their sense of fairness in the story of the vineyard workers (Mt 20:116). The early workers received in full what had been promised them, but resented the owner’s mercy to the latecomers. The righteous believed In your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently they had earned God’s gift of love and were angry to hear departed. Freedom in Christ What are you giving to Jesus this year? Are you STRUGGLING to find a way out? A way out of the sinful habits? Withholding forgiveness and love? Unhealed wounds of past hurts? Reconciliation will also be available during this prayer session.

This story perhaps identifies the deepest obstacle to mercy: Those who feel they have never received mercy themselves find it hardest to let God give it to others. ~~ Excerpted by Peter Marrin, editor of Celebration Questions for meditation or discussion: How can I leaven my own understanding of Church as juridical, doctrinal and hierarchical to a way of life that includes emphasis on discipleship and service? When have I been ‘mercied’ by God – received His free and unwarranted love and forgiveness?
