About the Piece Incalzando Misteriozo was an important piece for me because it was my first large scale work and the first piece I ever conducted. It began life as a piano piece called Unleashed Imagination that was itself based upon a selfcomposed poem (see page vii). The piano piece went on to win a Mississippi state-wide High School composition competition and so I decided to orchestrate it for band to be performed at our last concert during my senior year at Tupelo High in 1993.
The piece starts and ends in a quick staccato manner with a slower (half-speed) legato section in the middle. It is constructed using an A and B theme followed by a similar C theme. In the slower middle section the A and B themes are restated starting with an Oboe solo. The piece returns to the quick tempo of the opening and restates the A theme but then jumps through a few new developments of the C theme mixed with motives from the A and B theme throughout until the climactic ending.
This edition is the first time being type set using a notation program working from handwritten documents. There were a few minimal changes made with the score but the overall makeup was kept intact. It is dedicated to my High School Band Directors Floyd Stevens & O’Neal Douglas as well as Danny Elfman whose style I was imitating.

Imagine Imagine... wonders fill my brain A thousand, a hundred objects Suspended, trapped in my skull. Objects that carry every form, Every shape from earth, Heaven, From hell, and inside myself How do I call forth images? Images that breathe, and take life, Gallop about as free beings inside my head. Dancing images turn about, And the cloud – the cloud of reason Thrown outward to the world of Reality! Images, left behind with total control! Reality on outside, Fantasy left inside. Fantasy that has the urge to spout from inside, To be released unto the reality of every day, To invade the opposite world through ways... Ways, so many ways to be expressed. The artist and his paintings that show the figure Of images from deep within. We hear them speak through the poets, Their words etched into stone, And recorded for the sake of our kind. A kind that brings composers, so that The images might show emotion And call loudly unto Reality: "I am no longer imaginary, but real!" The image has escaped its imprisonment. It has torn through my head, through my Eyes, ears, and hands. Image is now real, an oddity among Reality. Yet, it belongs there, as ordinary as Two legs on a person, and they serve as legs, Holding up our kind, mankind. "Change is grand!" the image boasts... Imagine.
