Nature’s Germ Killer Copper can stop germs

before you get sick

Scientists have discovered a natural way to kill germs fast.

Now thousands of people are using it against viruses and bacteria that cause illness.

Colds, flu, and many other illnesses start when viruses get in your nose and multiply. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills germs like viruses, bacteria, and fungus almost instantly, just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about germs. Now we do.

The National Institutes of Health and the American Society for Microbiology vouch for the power of copper to kill germs.

Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a germ cell and destroys it in seconds.

The EPA recommends hospitals use copper for touch surfaces such as faucets and doorknobs. This cuts the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saves lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He

made a smooth copper probe with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril where viruses collect.

When he felt a tickle in his nose like a cold about to start, he rubbed the copper gently in his nose for 60 seconds. “It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold never happened.” That was 2012.

Now he’s gone 11 years without a cold. “I used to get 2-3 bad colds every year. Now I use my CopperZap right away at any sign I am about to get sick.”

After the initial success, he asked relatives and friends to try it.

Users say:

“It works! I love it!”

“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”

“Is it supposed to work that fast?”

“One of the best presents ever.”

“Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!”

“Cold sores gone!”

“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”

“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”

They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of bad germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.

Soon people found other things they could use it against:

Colds and Flu

Covid

Sinus trouble from germs

Cold sores or fever blisters

Canker sores that get infected

Mold allergies

Congestion or stuffiness

Drippy nose

Hay fever worsened by bacteria

Strep throat

Pink Eye and Styes

Skin infections

Infected sores

Cuts or wounds getting infected

Thrush and Tongue Infections

Warts

Ringworm

The handle is curved and textured to increase contact with fingers and hands in case you touch things sick people may have touched.

Scientists placed millions of viruses on copper. “The viruses started to die literally as soon as they touched it,” said Dr. Bill Keevil.

The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished. Easy to clean or polish.

School and learning look different for everyone, and we are here to embrace, celebrate and support that. Not every child or adult learns best in the same ways, so it’s wonderful to analyze how best to reach our kids in and out of the classroom. In “Homeschooling 101”, on page 14, we think about whether alternative education options may be the right answer for some of us.

Heading back to school, it’s the perfect time to assess how to keep the family’s immune systems healthy. On page 12, learn some straight-forward tips for boosting your immunity and staying well.

The end of summer is a great time to focus on renewal. Even though the lazy days of summer are winding down, there is a refresh and renewal that comes with the approach of the fall months. Our cover is a beautiful symbol of this time, featuring a field of sunflowers—my favorite flower. For me, sunflowers represent abundance, strength and endurance. What is your favorite flower and why? What do they represent to you and do they bring you back to a certain time and place that feels special or envokes positivity and joy? Something to think about and ponder during these wonderfully long and light-filled days of summer.

Wishing you all this and more,

KIDS’ FANS Program Building Healthy Families Together

Featured at the 12th Annual Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo 2023, with Special Thanks to Stamford Health, Exclusive Healthcare Partner

For the 12th consecutive year, Stamford Health is at the forefront of Connecticut’s largest health expo—the 12th Annual Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo 2023. As the Exclusive Healthcare Partner at the event on September 9, Stamford Health continues to educate the public through its many free services performed on site, as well as shedding a light on its numerous educational programs available to the general public. One such educational component is Stamford Health’s KIDS’ Fitness and Nutrition Services (FANS) program.

Under the direction of Ilaria St. Florian, MS, RD, who has a master’s degree in nutrition education from Columbia University and is a registered dietitian-nutritionist, KIDS’ FANS is a pediatric nutrition education program that promotes childhood wellness, obesity prevention and physical activity. KIDS’ FANS’ curriculum empowers children and adolescents to make healthy behavioral changes by providing the tools and skills needed to navigate their food and exercise environments.

“2023 marks the ninth year that KIDS’ FANS’ registered dietitians have been providing nutrition education classes in Stamford’s public elementary schools as part of their year-long health curriculum,” says St. Florian. “Classes are interactive and provide age-appropriate practical tips and know-how to guide kids towards healthy eating and increased physical activity. During the summer months, KIDS’ FANS teams up with local summer camps, such as the YMCA, Stamford Recreation and Mill River Park, to include nutrition-based activities and games that offer hands-on visual and interactive learning. With the rise in obesity, this type of program is key in helping children take an active role in caring for their bodies.”

Studies show that children who are well-nourished and participate in regular physical activity are more focused in school and perform better academically, are less likely to be absent, exhibit fewer behavioral problems and have increased self-esteem. However, statistics from hhs.gov show that children aged 2-18 consume on average 40 percent of their total daily calories from foods that are high in sugar and fat and low in nutritional value. Children also spend more than seven-and-a-half hours a day in front of a screen (TV, videogame, computer, phone) and only one in three children are physically active every day. Community outreach is an integral part of KIDS’ FANS’ role in promoting healthy eating and physical activity and its presence at local health fairs, including the Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo, and presentations to community partners are integral to the growth of the program and its ability to communicate its message and offerings. In accordance with the Connecticut state-mandated health curriculum and supported by studies that show the correlation between student health and academic achievement, KIDS’ FANS hopes to fill the gap in schools, as well as in the community, by increasing awareness and improving health behaviors for students and their families.

The 12th Annual Health Wellness & Lifestyle Expo 2023 is thrilled to showcase Stamford Health’s KIDS’ FANS program in addition to over 120 exhibitors showcasing, educating and selling health and wellness products and services. Attendees can also look forward to a robust schedule of free and spirited fitness classes led by the area’s top fitness instructors.

For the most up-to-date list of participants and event activities and offerings, visit HWL-Expos.com. Location: Harbor Point Boardwalk, 1 Harbor Point Rd, Stamford. See ad, back cover.

Controlling Indoor Air Pollution

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollution can be as high as, or even higher than, outdoor levels. Because we spend about 90 percent of our time indoors, ambient air quality can impact anyone’s health, but seniors, children and people with health conditions like asthma and heart disease are more vulnerable.

Some pollutants come from outside; others originate indoors through cooking, cleaning, smoking, building materials, consumer products and furnishings. Common contaminants include formaldehyde, mold and pollen. Consider these measures to maintain a healthy, fresh-air environment inside the dwelling.

VENTILATE THE HOME

Open non-street-facing windows for 15 minutes every day to let fresh air in. Even if it’s colder or hotter outdoors, indoor air quality will improve, and the temperature will adjust quickly. The best times to ventilate are before 10 a.m. and after 9 p.m., when outdoor pollution is lowest.

This Medicine of the Future is Here Now!

Air quality alerts for particulates from forest fires or heavy smog may indicate skipping ventilation. To expel pollutants, use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, or position a fan to blow out of a window. Ventilate rooms when painting or engaging in maintenance and hobbies that use noxious chemicals.

FILTER THE AIR

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters fitted into heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems remove pollutants throughout the house, including dust, pollen, mold and bacteria. Portable air cleaners known as HEPA air purifiers can sanitize a single room or area. For more information, visit Tinyurl.com/EPAindoorair.

CLEAN SURFACES

To reduce airborne, allergy-causing agents, including dust mites, pollen, animal dander and dust (comprised of dead skin, soil, fungal spores and chemicals), houseclean regularly. Use a vacuum with HEPA filtration and strong suction. Wet-wipe and wet-mop surfaces with reusable, compostable materials like washable cotton, hemp or wool. Avoid petroleum-based microfiber, which releases microplastics. Mops with bamboo or metal handles are more eco-friendly and longer lasting than plastic types.

AVOID INTRODUCING POLLUTANTS

Remove shoes at the door to prevent tracking in pesticides from green spaces and infectious bacteria from public restrooms, healthcare buildings or foodservice facilities. Replace chemical-ridden air fresheners, body perfumes and bug sprays with low-toxicity, DIY or commercial products that use essential oils and plant-based ingredients. Choose cleaning products certified or recommended by Green Seal (GreenSeal.org), EcoLogo (EcoLogo.org) or the EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning (Tinyurl.com/EWGclean).

Make sure new furnishings and remodeling materials don’t contain lead, asbestos, flame retardants, volatile organic compounds or perfluorinated chemicals. Choose Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood furniture and Global Organic Textile Standard-certified textiles. For more tips, visit Tinyurl.com/EWGhomeguide

Acne-Free Skin is Possible

Hilda Demirjian, founder of Hilda Demirjian Laser and Skin Care Center in White Plains, New York, founded the first med spa in New York State more than 25 years ago. The Center, offering aesthetic laser and skin care, is a haven for those seeking exceptional skin care services.

A passionate healthy skin care advocate, Demirjian shares, “We know that the skin is the largest organ in the body and serves as a blanket for all other organs. With this in mind, it’s vital to invest in your skin for a healthy lifestyle.”

While the Center sees a wide variety of clients presenting with myriad skin care concerns, Demirjian notes that many are seeking treatment and lifestyle recommendations for acne. “We often treat two types of acne: teenage acne—which usually shows up between the ages of 11 and 19 due to hormonal changes—and adult acne which often appears between the ages of 30 and 60,” she says. “In both cases, I recommend they come see us for a complimentary consultation. From there we can evaluate their skin to choose the best treatment path so they can be acne-free, once and for all.”

Demirjian affirms that the Center offers a range of acne treatments; however, she explains that one modality stands out above the rest—the Laser Skin Rejuvenation and Acne Laser Treatment. “The laser does a wonderful job of eliminating acne completely—without ointments or prescription medication,” according to Demirjian who was a guest speaker and the only U.S. delegate at this year’s annual International Conference on Laser, Optics and Photonics in Paris due to her extensive experience in aesthetic laser and skin care. Since every individual’s skin needs are different depending on whether they have minor or cystic acne, she notes that it could take up to six consistent acne laser sessions to have acnefree skin. “However, improvements are usually noticeable after the first session,” she attests. Additionally, the Center offers an all-botanical skin care line, inspired by Demirjian’s Persian upbringing. “As a young girl, I used to go to the spa on a weekly basis with several of my family members. I reveled in watching my grandmother mix antioxidant-rich pomegranate, cherry and blackberries together and apply the mixture on the face and body as a mask for skin rejuvenation,” she recalls. In her ongoing quest to stay on the cutting-edge of skin care products and services, Demirjian told us she goes for spa treatments whenever she travels. “I’ve brought passion, experience and heart into my skin care products. Our exclusive and luxury skin care line has been formulated and is packaged in our high-tech lab here in the United States.”

Hilda Demirjian Skin Care products are available on Amazon.com or at HildaDemirjianLaser.com/shop. Text 914-374-1756 to book a no-obligation, complimentary skin care evaluation. See ad, page 13.

Immune Boosting Tips to Stay Well This School Year

Returning to school can be both exciting yet stressful, especially if you or your child has concerns or anxiety about COVID, flu and other illnesses. How do we keep our family healthy and boost confidence in children to return to school?

Try these five tips for boosting immunity.

Add Apples

The old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” holds some truth. Apples are an excellent source of antioxidants believed to prevent damage to cells and tissues. The apple’s flavonoids and antioxidants can protect from several viral infections and allergens. Eating apples every day may also improve lung function and prevent lung damage.

Eat The Rainbow

Beyond apples, a variety of colored fruits and vegetables provide the body with nutrients and minerals to function optimally and support immunity. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, antioxidants and beta-carotene to support our infection-fighting ability. Broccoli has fiber, vitamins A, C and E, plus antioxidants. Nuts and seeds like

sunflower seeds and almonds not only have vitamin E, but contain healthy fats. Did you know that one ounce of red bell pepper has more vitamin C than an ounce of orange? Herbs like rosemary, oregano, cinnamon and clove have antimicrobial properties to fight off bacteria and viruses.

Get Your Vitamin D

You may have heard that sunlight is important for helping our bodies make vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones. But did you know that vitamin D is needed for a healthy immune system? Research has shown that vitamin D has both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Foods highest in vitamin D include fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines. Egg yolks, red meat and liver also are high in vitamin D. Some foods are fortified with vitamin D like orange juice, dairy products and non-dairy milks.

Adequate sun exposure and vitamin D also help your moods. Getting out into nature can lower rates of depression and stress, and improve self-esteem and

confidence. This offers you the opportunity to be more active and keep your muscles strong, which promotes a healthy immune system. In the northern hemisphere, getting enough vitamin D from food and sunlight can be challenging, so you may need to take a vitamin D supplement to get an adequate amount.

Zinc Up

If you’re deficient in zinc, you may be more susceptible to pathogens. Zinc supports multiple aspects of the immune system, from the barrier of the skin to gene regulation within lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, to production of immunoglobulins and even DNA replication. It functions as an antioxidant and can stabilize membranes, thus preventing viruses and bacteria from entering your body. Foods such as pumpkin seeds, oysters, oats, lean beef, chickpeas, black beans and cashews are all high in zinc.

Prioritize Your Zzz’s

Adequate sleep is essential to a healthy

body. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which need to increase when you have an infection, inflammation or are under stress. Sleep deprivation may decrease production of these cytokines. In addition, infectionfighting antibodies and cells are reduced during periods when you don’t get enough sleep. How much sleep do you need to bolster your immune system? The optimal amount of sleep for adults is seven to eight hours of good sleep each night. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours. School-aged children may need 10 or more hours of sleep. Therefore, it’s important to practice good sleep hygiene and establish regular bedtimes for children, with ideally no technology an hour before bed.

Homeschooling 101

During the past few years, there has been an influx of parents that made the decision to keep their children at home to receive their education outside of the traditional school system. There have been two very different approaches that have emerged during this time. Not everyone falls into these two categories, but many have.

Some parents took the school at home route by setting up a classroom in their house, creating a daily schedule, purchasing a pre-selected grade curriculum and mimicking the school experience within the confines of their home.

Others embarked on their homeschool journey researching and purchasing an abundance of materials and curriculum—with many making plans to camp out in their living rooms for the duration of their children’s academic careers. Scheduling meetings in the park and flooding forums with questions, these moms went at it with such gusto that many burned out and had their children back in school after the winter break.

While there isn’t a specific road map to alternative education options such as homeschooling your child, there are a few things that you can learn to be a successful long-term homeschool family, if you feel that is the direction your family is heading toward.

De-school: Take at the very least a semester to chill out with your children, get to know them and their learning styles. Provide them with beautiful books and get outside and explore. Play games and conduct kitchen science experiments together. If you can relax enough to take an entire year to really enjoy this process, your entire homeschool experience will be much easier.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to anything. What works well for one family may not work for yours. There are so many different curriculum options, programs, classes and resources available to you, but that doesn’t mean they will meet your needs or that of your child. Choose wisely and calmly during the abovementioned year to learn.

Don’t panic: You and your children will be okay. They will learn, they will self-regulate and most importantly, they will thrive when given the opportunity to learn in a way that works for them. We push our children so hard to meet the “normal” standards or common core mandates, that we forget that everyone should be given the freedom to learn at their own pace. The majority of students do manage to figure it all out and become successful adults.

No classroom required: Often, families feel that not having a dedicated classroom makes homeschooling unattainable—especially if they can’t afford a well-equipped space. We homeschooled from the kitchen table with a cabinet shelf cleared out for our books. We relocated to the sofa as needed. My son made it to college, graduated with honors and completed his bachelor’s degree in three years. During quarantine, he spent most of his college classes firmly planted on the sofa, just like he did during his homeschooled days.

Forums: Getting support from forums and the internet is great, but take it all with a grain of salt. You can quickly become overwhelmed by how 40 different parents homeschool their children 40 different ways and all answer your questions showcasing their unique perspective. Remember, everyone has a story to share and yours will not be the same as theirs. Don’t get sucked in trying to find the correct answer to any question. It doesn’t exist!

Socialization: People used to be amazed when they found out I was a homeschooled student and could talk in coherent sentences and engage in conversation with just about anyone. Just because you choose to homeschool does not mean your children will not be able to communicate with others or be lonely. There are many more opportunities for children to socialize as homeschoolers, they have a much more flexible schedule and I feel create more meaningful relationships with not just their peers but other children older and younger than they are. They also form lasting bonds with adults and in my son’s case, with other educators and even professors in college. Also keep in mind that there are many children in school that can’t communicate well and are lonely; school doesn’t necessarily fix either of these issues and in some cases, causes them.

There you have it in a nutshell. Homeschooling is very rewarding and can be a wonderful experience for your family. That being said, it is not for every parent or child and that is okay too. Even if it is just for a season, enjoy the time with your kiddos as you begin to instill the love of learning that they will remember long after the books are put away.

5 SNACK MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE

Food has a significant impact on attention, behavior and mood. When we get that phone call from the school about our child’s misbehavior, it can often be frustrating and overwhelming. Children are more likely to find success in school when the child feels good physically and emotionally. A cranky, crabby child complaining of a headache or stomach aches, or about to throw a tantrum, always throws a wrench into the day. When thinking about a child experiencing those challenges in school, it can certainly be easy to overlook one of the simplest solutions: what the child is eating during the day.

This is a problem that can be solved with a few simple changes to your snack selections to make the day better for you and your child, improving your child’s attention, behavior and mood.

Here are five snack mistakes parents commonly make which can make a child’s behavior worse.

1Processed Snacks Containing MSG

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a common food additive which is intended to intensify and enhance umami flavors in sauces, broths, soups and other foods. Glutamate is a natural excitatory neurotransmitter found in our brains which allows messages to zip between our neurons. Foods containing MSG increase the amount of that neurotransmitter in our brains. MSG intake damages the nerve fibers and causes neurological challenges like anxiety, depression, disorientation, dizziness, hyperactivity, light-headedness, loss of balance, mental confusion, migraine headache, mood swings, panic attacks, rage reactions and other behavioral problems in children. Avoid the pre-packaged foods as much as possible. MSG is found most often in fast food, seasonings, soups, dressings and condiments, chips, frozen foods, and instant noodle products. MSG may also be hiding under these other names: hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts or protein isolate.

Choose instead fresh fruits or vegetables, dried fruit, nuts or seeds, or look for an alternate version of the same snack.

2Snacks with Artificial Food Dyes

The most popular food dyes are Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. These three make up 90% of all the food dye used in the U.S. and are banned in several other countries. For children who have sensitivities to food dyes, consuming them often results in behavioral changes such as irritability, restlessness and sleep disturbance. They can also impact memory and learning. They can even cause changes to the neurotransmitters in the brain and changes to the brain structure.

Instead look for foods that use natural vegetable dyes. There are a lot of great dye-free options out there to match with all of the traditional snack foods and candies your kids might be craving.

3Snacks High in Sugar

Our brains were built to crave sugar. It is an intense source of energy that is easy

for our bodies to use. When sugar hits our brains, dopamine is released. Dopamine is a brain chemical released by neurons and can signal that an event was positive. Dopamine can lead to feelings of euphoria, bliss, and enhanced motivation and concentration. This is why initially, after your child receives a sugary treat, they seem calmer and happier.

But then all that sugar hits the brain and impacts two parts of the brain: the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. It impacts the inhibitory neurons responsible for controlling your impulses, which is why your child seems to be acting without thinking. It also impacts the hippocampus, causing brain fog, depression, anxiety, irritability, anger, memory loss and fatigue.

While the argument can be made that sugar doesn’t actually make children hyper, it definitely impacts the parts of the brain that are responsible for helping your child with decision-making, impulse control and delaying gratification.

There are plenty of low sugar snack choices you can grab if you plan at home. Instead of going for the cookies, grab one of these choices: GoGo Squeeze packs, low-sugar fruit snacks or fruit leather, Kind bars, beef sticks, nuts, veggie straws or veggie chips, popcorn, trail mix (ones with nuts and dried fruit, not chocolate), sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds.

4Snacks Containing Dairy

Diary-based snacks present a challenge on two fronts. First, the ones kids most often choose as a dairy-based snack are squeeze yogurts, which are full of sugar. You may be thinking that a cheese stick is a safer option as it has no sugar, but many children struggle to digest casein in dairy, or lactose, the sugar in dairy. If your child is lactose-intolerant or allergic to the proteins found in dairy, you may see changes in mood and behavior. Children can become aggressive, cranky or irritable.

Children with leaky gut may have challenges with the protein in dairy not being fully broken down, but instead forming a compound called casomorphines. The protein structure is like morphine. These proteins get absorbed into the bloodstream through the gut; they cross the blood-brain

barrier and bind to opiate receptors in the brain as well along the gastrointestinal tract. When this occurs, kids can’t seem to follow multiple step instructions and once they seem “off,” there is no reasoning with them.

There are many dairy-free alternatives, including products made from almonds, cashew, coconut, rice and soy, which can be considered in place of cow milk-based options to eliminate casein and lactose from your child’s snacks. There are even dairy-free chocolate and ice cream products. A great thing to consider is the vegan alternatives to your child’s favorite milk, yogurt or cheese.

5Juice, Milk or Soda With a Snack

Children often complain of being thirsty when eating a snack, so we pack them a juice box, jug of milk or soda to accompany their snack. Each of those choices provides a high dose of sugar in proportion to the amount of liquid you are drinking. However, soda ranks the highest on its impact on the body and behavior.

Among teens, those who drank soft drinks more frequently had higher scores for aggression. Children who drank four or more soft drinks per day were more than twice as likely to destroy other people’s belongings, get into fights, and physically attack people. Children who drank high levels of soda were more likely to exhibit withdrawn behavior and attention problems.

Water is important for detoxification and removal of waste, maintaining blood volume, and brain health as 73% of the brain is water. A dehydrated brain causes headaches and impacts clarity of thinking. So do your children a favor and pack them a bottle of water for their next snack.

As you pack your child’s lunch box this school year, consider the above tips to make it a healthier one.

LIFELONG LEARNING BENEFITS OF

BEING THE FOREVER

STUDENT

It’s never too late to take an evening drawing class at the local high school, learn a language with the help of an app or get one-on-one tutoring from a piano instructor. Adults of any age can find personal and professional benefits when they engage in what is termed “lifelong learning”. It is a great way to spice up retirement, acquire skills for a coveted promotion, master new technology, express creativity or simply keep the mind sharp. Lifelong learners are generally curious, self-motivated and passionate individuals. Their continuing educational pursuits can lead to mental and emotional benefits, including healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Brain Benefits

In a study published in the journal Psychological Science involving 200 seniors, neuroscientists at the Center for Vital Longevity at The University of Texas at Dallas found that sustained engagement in cognitively demanding, novel activities— such as learning digital photography or quilting—significantly enhanced memory function in older adults. The researchers were surprised to discover that the control group, which engaged in fun, social activities without learning a new skill, did not perform as well in memory tests.

In a report published in the journal Neurology, Dr. Keith Johnson from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that people engaged in higher levels of intellectual stimulation throughout their lives can delay the onset of memory problems and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, although it does not represent a cure for the illness.

The mind is a use-it-or-lose-it tool, says Dr. Lise Van Susteren, a general and forensic psychiatrist in Washington, D.C. “What better way to use our short-term and long-term memory than to engage in lifelong learning? The older we get, the less likely we are to exercise short-term memory. We program our phones with numbers we call regularly. We store passwords and usernames in our computers and never attempt to memorize credit card numbers,” she explains. “We’re not using our brains enough, leaving us open to being replaced by AI [artificial intelligence]. The brain is a muscle to be exercised regularly or like a car that you must keep tuned up.”

Susteren points to a five-year study of London taxi drivers, which found that the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is crucial for long-term memory and spatial navigation, was larger than average in the brains of these cabbies. What’s more, the neuroscientists at University College London were able to show through magnetic resonance imaging that this gray-matter growth occurred over a four-year period after the drivers had memorized an intricate network of 25,000 streets and thousands of routes to tourist attractions and city hotspots. According to Van Susteren, this study suggests that intensive learning can spur the brain to grow over time.

Making Every Day Count

Ingrid Bianca Byerly, director of the Humanitarian Challenges Focus Program and senior lecturing fellow in the Thompson Writing Program, at Duke University, describes lifelong learners as audacious, curious and fun-loving people that passionately seize the day. In a TEDxStGeorge talk entitled “The New Fountain of Youth: Lifelong Learning”, she recounts the invigorating experience of being on the faculty of three Semester at Sea voyages, where she taught undergraduate students and lifelong learners world music and public-speaking advocacy for global humanitarian causes.

“Entering college, you’re asking yourself, ‘What am I going to do for a job and a paycheck?’ and at retirement, you’re asking, ‘What is my purpose, and what am I going to do with the rest of my life for my personal fulfillment and enrichment?’”

Byerly expresses admiration for lifelong learners that pursue life goals, learn to play musical instruments, take art classes, climb mountains or write memoirs, and surmises that the secret to staying young and keeping the mind alive is adult education.

Life-Altering Pursuits

For some lifelong learners, seeking new opportunities and embracing change are compelling motivators. Take Maia Toll, for example. In 2006, she followed a whim to study herbalism with a traditional healer in Ireland. For the elementary school teacher living in Beacon, New York, botanical herbs had only been a hobby up to that point.

“Apprenticing with Eleanor changed everything,” she says of her experience with her Irish-based mentor. “I had the space in my life and money from selling my house. Three months turned into nearly a year, and upon returning home, I continued studying for four more years.”

Toll left her teaching career to become a full-time herbalist and is now the co-owner of a shop called Herbiary, with locations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Asheville, North Carolina, where she lives. She has taught herbalism at West Chester University in their School of Public Health, led a study program in the Amazon rainforest and written several books, including her latest, Letting Magic In. As she explains, “Lifelong learning can change your life at any age.”

A Greater Commitment to Learning

For 30 years, Jim Walker was a labor representative for the California School Employees Association. He recalls teaching a labor-law class as an adjunct instructor for Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and estimates that about 80 percent of his students were lifelong learners, which he defines as adults between the ages of 30 and 45 that are interested in the subject matter for personal or professional reasons rather than

satisfying a requirement for a college degree.

“It was obvious to me that these lifelong learners were more dedicated students than college students. They were like sponges and wanted to absorb everything. Occasionally during classes, it was the lifelong learners that were on their phones googling the subject and updating my facts,” says Walker, who admits that when he had more free time in retirement, he enrolled in meteorology and astrology courses to satisfy longstanding interests of his own.

The Joy of Achieving Milestones

In love with learning and the sense of accomplishment she feels whenever she masters a subject, Doreen DeStefano, of Root Causes Holistic Health & Medicine, in Fort Myers, Florida, has been earning degrees since 1987. She holds bachelor’s degrees in nursing and exercise physiology, master’s degrees in criminology and public business administration, and doctorates in natural health and nursing practice. “In medicine, there is always something new to learn,” she says. “I think that’s why I chose this field. It’s fun to learn the latest thing.”

WELCOME TO EARTH SCHOOL

We are here on Earth to learn and grow—as attendees of Earth School. We are here learning skills for our Soul to expand consciousness. The headmaster of this school is the Universe, and the students are spirits masquerading as humans experiencing life. This is why when we go to advanced schooling, we call it a university.

Earth is a very advanced education for the Soul. The Universe is the creator of Earth and of you. The same substances and gases that make up the universe are in you.

What is the Universe? You may call it God, Allah, Jehovah, Wakan Tanka (Native American) or Source. It is the beginning and the end. The Universe is a living being of light and energy that is responsible for sending you to Earth and will take you out when you are done. Some say it is our Father in heaven and Earth is our Mother.

The Universe is alive and conscious. If you ask the universe a question it will respond to you in symbols, signs, messages and synchronicities. Like a good professor, the Universe is here to teach. Dreams are the way that Source sends you symbols and messages to your Soul to help you on your path. You may want to get a good dream journal to understand these messages and prompts on lessons about Earth life.

While we are on Earth, there are tons of experiences that you have that help you learn how to grow. We have lessons and homework, big presentations and projects. The lessons will keep repeating until we get a passing grade. A lesson could be surviving abuse; your test would be to learn how to stand up for yourself by leaving, getting to a safe place and embracing self-love. If you accomplish this lesson, you then develop different spiritual attributes like strength, courage and resilience.

You may also be a person who has some sort of disability. Then, with perseverance and endurance you gain more attributes or gifts. You may develop awareness, empathy and sensitivity. As we live our life through the mentality of it as a school, then we are encouraged to go toward what is right, light and what is good. We gain more light knowledge and return back home more fulfilled.

While you are in school, you must attend class to pass. That means paying attention to the lessons. On Earth School, to ascend you always must do your schoolwork and assignments. Some school assignments could be meditation, listening to your spirit, learning how to let go or forgive others. Lessons could also be creating your heart’s desires or leaving toxic environments.

Creating is like making a school presentation. They are important assignments. Creating books, dances, food, clothes and music. Creativity is an important part of school. Art class is often a favorite class in education. Art helps you to learn how to use your creative right brain side. That helps you be more creative with family or at work and is a great way to problem solve in life. We are natural creators like Source. We are here practicing that gift. Call on Angels and guides if your lessons get too hard.

Don’t skip class in Earth School, because you will fall behind. Skipping class could be getting caught up in addictions and selfabuse or abuse of others. Addictions could be drugs, alcohol, shopping, gambling, etc. Addictions take you out of the present moment and have you focus on maladaptive behaviors in the future that will lead you to devolution and not evolution. There are still lessons to overcome. We are on Earth to learn and grow and move forward, graduating to a higher plane of existence or ascension.

As we move from the Piscean age to the Aquarian age, which is the time of creating more in society, we should be more conscious that we are in school. This is a tough school for the Soul—as hard as an Ivy League education. If you are conscious of these lessons and learn them, they will disappear. You then will continue to grow and graduate, perhaps never reincarnating on this planet. Your soul will become more and more peaceful and feel more comfortable in your Earth skin and be able to breathe.

Earth is a school where everyone passes, so get out your notebook and get to work.

Group Fitness Glory

TIPS TO MAXIMIZE RESULTS AND ENJOYMENT

People are by nature social creatures,

and, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, human connection can lead to a longer life, better health and improved well-being. It should come as no surprise that for exercising, a group setting can also be a plus.

Led by a knowledgeable teacher and populated by like-minded participants, fitness classes offer a great way to jumpstart an exercise regimen and achieve fitness goals. Although some people may feel vulnerable when trying a new physical activity in front of strangers, there are ways to overcome the anxiety. Exercising together can transform a workout into a fun, motivating, socially fulfilling activity.

Find the Right Classes

In most cities, an array of group fitness classes is available at gyms, YMCAs, community centers, medical facilities and other public and private venues. The diverse choices include Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance; barre, which incorporates ballet movements; spin cycling, or high-intensity stationary biking; many forms of yoga; the mind-body practice known as Pilates; and boot camp, a military-inspired workout that incorporates strength building with strenuous aerobics. Free group activities are often available, too, such as walking, running, dancing or hiking meetups.

Classes may be posted online and onsite. Scheduling apps can assist the search for nearby options, including ClassPass ( ClassPass.com ) and MindBody ( MindBodyOnline.com ) for classes and OneRoof (OneRoofApp.com) and Nextdoor (Nextdoor.com) for neighborhood meetups.

“Fitness classes are not one-size-fits-all, and finding an environment and a movement style that matches you can help you be more successful in your fitness journey,” says Jillian Aeder, a Denver-based doctor of physical therapy at Hinge Health and a certified athletic trainer. She recommends trying different studios and types of classes when starting out.

Be Consistent and Accountable

“Group classes are usually conducted on a weekly basis at the same time to help people find consistency in their workouts,” says Britney Kimball, a professional dancer and certified Pilates instructor for BK Movement Health, in New York City. “Attending the same class every week not only helps you see the benefits of fitness faster, but also creates a comfortability with the instructor, the class and the people around you.”

Amber Grundy, a doctor of physical therapy and fitness instructor in Philadelphia, says, “Group fitness programs can be helpful in keeping you accountable for exercising on a regular basis. It makes you feel a part of a community, bringing together multiple fitness levels that can help challenge and motivate.”

Get Going

Fitness classes offer the thrill of competition, Aeder says, noting, “I have seen firsthand how group settings help improve participation, performance and ultimately results.” Some classes encourage a healthy dose of competition by displaying scores, ranking attendees in speed or agility, or implementing tiers within an all-level class. In a 2011 study of older adults published in The International Journal of Sport and Society, researchers found that seniors like a challenge, enjoy “winning things” and are motivated to work harder when engaging in competition.

Overcome Fear

To alleviate anxiety about joining a new program, Kimball recommends that people show up to class early, introduce themselves and ask questions. “An instructor will love it when you’re involved, wanting to learn and openly communicating with them,” she explains.

Grundy suggests managing expectations. “Read the description of the class before attending to learn what to expect, and if you’re worried about past injuries or limitations, review that with the instructor. Often, group classes will offer options based on difficulty level. It’s OK for a beginner to take an expert class so long as they take breaks throughout the workout.”

Save Money

Group classes have one very important advantage over individual training: cost. According to the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, a one-on-one personal training session may begin at $80, whereas a group class with 10 students

could be $20 each. Lower costs make sustained attendance more achievable

Enjoy the Company

The group setting is a nice way to both meet new people and spend extra time with friends or family,” says Grundy. “The camaraderie makes participants more accountable; many leave class saying, ‘See you next time!’ or asking, ‘Where have you been?’”

Walking in Wonder

calendar of events

Before life snagged us in its insidious net of obligations, our child selves discovered awe around every bend. We poked our noses into fluffy, new dandelions and saw faces in passing clouds. “Why?” was a perpetual mantra we lived by, no doubt testing the patience of loved ones. Somewhere along the way, our eagerness to jump into the lap of the world and be held by magic gave way to a new way of being.

In 1942, Albert Einstein wrote to his old friend, German psychiatrist Otto Juliusburger, “People like you and I, though mortal of course like everyone else, do not grow old no matter how long we live. What I mean is we never cease to stand like curious children before the great Mystery into which we were born.” This quote reminds us to stop wading in the daily grind and dive into the deep end of everyday magic.

Discovering a new musical artist, learning about a country we never heard of and touching emerald moss during a Sunday hike wakes up the child in us, the self that is impervious to pessimism. Observing a flower at ground level with the bees or reacquainting ourselves with the changing wheel of constellations not only re-sparks our ability to respond to life but also reinforces our connection to the infinite.

Courting curiosity is the domain of cats, as well as the most contented humans. Rekindling our wonderment is even better when shared with kindred souls, and the ripple effect can travel further than we might expect. Here are some inspirations:

n Without a set plan, get in the car with a friend and see where the day takes you. Pack a picnic and stop for lunch somewhere off the beaten path.

n Regardless of artistic ability, begin a nature journal and record small bits of the seasons throughout the year.

n Check out a book or two from the children’s section at the library and be young again.

n Create a daily practice of daydreaming about something delightful that has nothing to do with the past or the future.

n Start a local meet-up with others that share a common passion: books, healthy baking, trains or thrifting.

n Revisit a childhood or teenage interest and don’t explain why.

“Local Chiropractor offers Advanced Treatment for Chronic Pain”

Dear Friend,

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in townthey usually say, “oh yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Gertner. I’ve seen stories for years…” Well, that’s me.

“When I was in college I was injured playing football. I began developing severe and constant pain in my neck and lower back. After chiropractic, and PT were not effective in relieving my symtoms…I had surgery. Over the next 20 years I had surgery 3 more times, but I still suffered with horrible pain. I was referred to Dr. Gertner by a friend. On the first visit he performed a computerized diagnostic scan that located my problem. I had a pinched nerve After only a few visits most of the pain in my neck and back was gone for the first time in decades. I fell like I have my life back!” – Rob C

Now let me tell my story. When I was in chiropractic school in Atlanta, Georgia, I had a severe injury to my lower back. For over a year I suffered with horrible pain. I was getting adjusted three times a week by traditional chiropractors without any results. I was less than a month away from graduation and I became very frustrated. Forthe last 8 years I had studied to become a chiropractor, and now my life was put on hold by a condition that chiropractic is supposed to treat.

A colleague of mine introduced me to a doctor who specializes in an uniquetype of chiropractic called NUCCA. In the entire world there are less than 200 NUCCA doctors. NUCCA can be considered to be like “engineering of the spine”, specializing in spinal correction without surgery. The NUCCA correction gently restores the skull, spine, and pelvis back to its proper position. This takes pressure off the nerves and allows the body to return to its natural, healthy state. Patients are typically seen 1/3 as often as traditional chiropractic and most patients receive permanent relief.

Immediately after the first visit I felt relief, and in one week I was completely out of pain. I spent the next two years working as an intern inthat Atlanta office.

In 2002 I returned home to NY. In the last 20 years we have quickly become one of the busiest NUCCA office worldwide. It is common for patients to travel well over an hour each way for care. We have seen patients that travel from all over the world, as well as 48 of the 50 United States. Because of our passion for helping people and our commitment to excellence, we quickly became one of the busiest Upper Cervical Chiropractic offices worldwide.

It’s strange how life is, because people now come to see me with all types of problems. With this NUCCA procedure I have tremendous results with the type of patients that visit traditional chiropractors like neck pain, back pain, and headaches, but the majority of my patients have more severe neurological conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Trigeminal Neuralgia, MS, Parkinson’s, and Seizures, just to name a few. I explain to my patients that I am not curing them of anything, but the NUCCA procedure is able to help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with the disease.

Here’s what some of my patients had to say:

“I used to suffer with severe facial pain called trigeminal neuralgia . I’ve seen my MD, Neurologist, and Acupuncturist with limited results. I travel from East Hampton, LI because this is the only treatment that has helped me” – Pat G

“For the last few years I have suffered with MS. I’ve been suffering with tremors, poor circulation, neck and back pain, loss of coordination, fatigue, asthma and insomnia. I have been under care for six months and without medication, Dr. Gertner has helped me control my MS. My tremors are gone and I am able to keep my hands steady. I am also seen great improvements in all my original symptoms including asthma—all without drugs!

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is make a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. The power that made the body, heals the body! We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Make A Believer Out Of Me Offer – You shouldn’t go bankrupt to find out the solution to your health problems. If you bring in this article, you can receive my computerized diagnostic test and new patient exam with x-rays if needed for $27. This exam could cost you $300 just for the computerized test alone. But, please call right away because this offer expires on July 31, 2023, and I don’t want you to miss out.

Why am I doing this? My purpose is to get as many people well through NUCCA chiropractic care as I possibly can. I want to become your chiropractor if you need me. If after the exam I think I can help you I’ll tell you, If not I’ll personally refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.

Satisfaction…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care. You’ll get professional care that’s affordable. My qualifications…I graduated from Hofstra University before finishing my Doctorate at Life College in Marietta, GA. I’m Board certified in the state of New York, and by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. I’ve been entrusted to take care of more than 12,000 patients…newborns, pro athletes, and celebrities that you may know, and I have delivered over 500,000 spinal corrections. My assistants are Daniela and Vanessa and they are great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. Our office is called Upper Cervical Chiropractic of New York and is conveniently located at 311 North St in White Plains. Our phone number is 914-686.6200 or you can visit our website at www.nuccadoctor.com. Call today for an appointment to start getting well!
