O

nce upon a time, there was a confident young woman on the fast track to becoming what everyone expected her to be. She thought she knew a lot of what there was to know.

Then one day she received an unexpected gift, a session with Nicole Miale an astrologer. Off she went, with a great deal of skepticism. The reading itself was interesting, but the astrologer’s recommendation was what really confused the young woman. “I highly recommend you seek some vibrational healing,” the astrologer said. The young woman left, clutching a paper with the recommended practitioner’s name but without intention of acting on the advice. She worked in healthcare, after all; she knew there was no such thing as vibrational healing!

Then a curious thing happened. She called the number on the paper and made an appointment for something she thought was probably nonsense.

The woman she was sent to see was a shamanic practitioner in Westport who would go on to become an assistant for world-renowned spiritual healer John of God. The young woman was in very good hands, but she had no idea of that. She laid on a massage table, eyes closed, listening to drumming and chanting, and thinking, “This is nuts. What am I doing here?” Her litany of negative thoughts went on, but suddenly she felt… something.

It wasn’t external, but inside her body. The odd sensation grew. She lay still, her mind finally quiet, feeling a bit panicked, but more afraid to move and stop the feeling than to let it continue. It felt like sparklers were being set off all over her body. A current she’d never felt before began to hum inside her. When the session was over, she surreptitiously scanned the room for heat lamps, trip wires, anything which might explain the odd sensations she’d just experienced. She saw nothing her mind could use to rationalize the experience. All she saw was some crystals, drums, rattles, art, and a massage table.

She tried to put it out of her mind, but the experience stuck with her. Months later she was visiting her mother and was suffering from a bad cold. Her mom offered to give her a Reiki treatment. The young woman had scoffed at many such offers before, but this time she accepted. As she laid on the table, she felt an incredibly powerful heat, as if the intensity of the whole sun was directed specifically at her very sore throat. When she opened her eyes, her mother was at the foot of the massage table, nowhere near her throat, which now felt much better. After the session, she sat on the table, looked at her mother and cried. “How is this possible?” she asked in a scared whisper. “How did you do that?”

That is the true story of my first two aware experiences with energy healing. They cracked my world wide open, made the impossible possible and forever altered my view of how things work. I went on to immerse myself in a Master’s degree in Experiential Health and Healing, becoming an energy healer, purposefully seeking the unknown, the curious, the downright mystical. After all my years of study, I never forget know how little I know.

In this issue, we explore vibration, how it works and its impact on health. We are all made of energy and in constant resonance or dissonance with the world, people and things around us. This creates infinite healing possibilities if we are open to them.

Welcome to the new year and a new world. I am holding the intention for each of you to experience more peace, joy and love in the coming year. May these articles, ideas, practitioners and businesses provide inspiration, hope, relief or a spark of curiosity about things unseen, yet so essential to our very existence.

Transform Your Coaching Skills

T

he Lyme Recovery Clinic & Detox Center was launched earlier this year to help those suffering from Lyme disease and other chronic illnesses heal through use of all-natural herbal supplements, intensive detoxification measures, energy healing and counseling practices.

The clinic was founded by Gregg Kirk, a Norwalk resident who has been practicing Reiki, human tuning (with tuning forks), ionic foot baths and remote energy healing for almost two decades. He also suffered from Lyme disease for more than 12 years. After receiving a diagnosis in 2005, Kirk spent the next several years trying a combination of Western medicine and long-term antibiotics to little avail.

Kirk was trained by Dr. Lee Cowden, MD, in treatment guidance of the Cowden Protocol, an all-herbal treatment program for Lyme disease patients. Since the training, he has been helping hundreds of patients across the country with the protocol.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Department of Pest Regulation have approved CRS Plus, an aerosol pheromone biopesticide product that disrupts the mating cycle of Aonidiella aurantii, also known as California Red Scale (CRS). Pheromones do not kill or damage the target insects, and are species-specific, so pollinators and other beneficial insect species are not affected.

CRS attacks all aerial parts of citrus trees, including twigs, leaves, branches and fruit. Heavy infestations can cause reduced fruit quality, yellowing and dropping of leaves, dieback of twigs and limbs and even death of the tree.

The San Francisco Department of the Environment’s list of materials allowed in blue recycling bins has been expanded to include plastic bags, paper coffee cups, ice cream containers, milk or juice cartons and textiles; it is also downsizing refuse bins. It’s all part of a shift to using dual-compartment trucks to collect refuse from black bins and organic waste from green bins, with a dedicated truck for recyclables. A national leader in recycling, the city is one of the first to attempt a zero-waste target year of 2020.

California has a goal of 75 percent recycling by 2020, having achieved a 44 percent rate in 2016. Los Angeles is making progress with a new commercial waste recycling system. Washington, D.C., has also expanded its list of accepted materials for recycling bins, but still doesn’t include plastic bags. With recent improvements to automated and optical sorting technology, some companies are becoming more accommodating about what they will accept.

ith over 10 different sightings already reported in Connecticut—and perhaps a hundred or more from Virginia to Maine—there is no doubt this is an irruption year. In the winter of 2013-14, there was an amazing influx of “snowies”. Scientists report that such irruptions are the result not of lemming shortages in the north, but of periods of lemming abundance. This results in a highly productive breeding season for the owls, and thus many more young owls heading south. The high number of immature owls during these invasions provides evidence that breeding season in the Arctic was indeed highly successful.

A large northern owl, the Snowy Owl is our heaviest owl.

It is an unmistakable white raptor that perches prominently in open areas. Open marshes, dunes, farmland and other open areas are good places to look. Although mostly white, they vary in the amount of dark barring on their feathers; the young birds are more heavily barred than adults, and females more than males.

In flight, their heavy build, round head and broad white wings are distinctive. These owls are active during the daytime, often moving from perch to perch and observed hunting. It’s worth emphasizing that there are three basic rules that Snowy Owl observers are expected to follow (borrowed from Project SNOWStorm): 1. Keep your distance.

2. Respect private property.

3. Don’t ever feed an owl.

At the Milford Point Coastal Center, look for this bird on the exposed sandbar in front of the Center, but also perched on flotsam in the marsh. Milford Point, Stratford Point and Stratford’s Long Beach have reported birds this year. One or two have been seen at the mouth of the Connecticut River.

Sightings at Hammonasset Beach State Park, Stratford’s Sikorsky Airport and Stonington Point were recently reported. Additionally, there were at least a couple of reports from inland locations. An all-white Snowy was perching on a rooftop at Gouveia Winery in Wallingford, on December 10, and an early-morning driver saw one fly across the road in Bloomfield at 1:30am.

Snowy Owls are relatively easy to find in an irruption year.

Focusing on coastal areas is your best bet. Scan all open areas for a prominent white bump in an exposed area. Sometimes they may be found roosting on a rooftop of a beach cottage, but almost never in a tree. You will do best if you use a spotting scope.

One good way to find a Snowy Owl is to look for a gaggle of warmly-dressed men and women with scopes and cameras on tripods; they are birders who are observing the bird. If it isn’t there, there are lots of winter birds moving down along the shoreline now, including a variety of duck species such as Red-breasted Merganser, Bufflehead, and Common Goldeneye, Red-throated and Common Loon, and many other waterbirds frequenting the same general location as the owl.

The IUCN lists the Snowy Owl as a species of “least concern”.

Even the intention alone to be more generous was enough to create these changes, and the amount spent did not influence the increase in levels of well-being. The discovery sheds fresh light on why many people feel gratified when giving, even when it costs them something.

Eating fish at least twice a week may significantly reduce the pain and swelling associated with rheumatoid arthritis,in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, creating swelling and pain. Studies have already shown the beneficial effect of fish oil supplements on rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, but a new study of 176 participants at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, found that increasing the amount of fish containing omega-3 they ate weekly as a whole food lowered their disease activity. Hemp Oil Cuts Seizure Frequency in Half Research from the New York University Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has found that cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive extract of hemp oil, significantly reduces seizure rates in epileptics. on Why Science Finds Faith a Healthy Choice

hysician Harold G. Koenig, an international authority on religion, health and ethical issues in medicine, has dedicated his career to understanding the relationship between faith and health.

Koenig, who has surveyed the scientific literature, shares the mounting evidence linking the power of faith to better health and well-being.

Koenig struggled for three decades to determine his life’s purpose before a spiritual transformation in 1984 set him on a Christian path. “As I’m able to surrender my will and follow God’s lead, I’ve found an increasing flow of blessings. Even in those times when I’m self-centered, the blessings continue. I can only attribute it to the incredible undeserved grace and mercy of one who understands and forgives,” he says.

He’s the director of Duke University’s Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health, an associate professor of medicine at the Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina, and author of nearly 50 books. Titles include The Healing Power of Faith, The Handbook of Religion and Health, and the recent You Are My Beloved. Really?, musings on the nature of divine love.

What maintains people’s faith in the face of worldly adversity?

Adversity can increase people’s faith; when things are going well, people don’t feel the same urgent need for religion.

Why do hurricanes happen? Why do people experience chronic pain? When someone is in the midst of challenges, there is no easy explanation, even though there can be many answers. Sometimes all you can do is to have faith that a good God reigns, despite appearances. That can lead to a sense of well-being and spiritual purpose, even in the midst of bad material experiences.

How you’ve dealt with life prior to a 18

challenge matters. If you follow a spiritual path and practice, when bad things happen, you can lean on your foundation of faith; you’re better prepared. Once you’re in the middle of it, all you may feel is the pain and a desperate desire to get rid of it.

One of the most precious gifts we have as humans is the freedom to choose. We can be selfish and strictly pleasure-seeking, or we can be kind and altruistic. We can turn toward or away from our divine source.

What have you concluded from decades of studying the relationship between faith, prayer and health?

Our research and that of many other major academic institutions, including Harvard and Columbia universities, shows that people of strong faith enjoy better social, physical and mental health, all else being equal. It drives healthy behaviors and attitudes, which leads to better health.

A person’s religious beliefs and spiritual practices affect them across their lifespan. It begins in utero, based on parental behavior and care, and shows in the

sense of trust we have as infants. In this way, parents’ faith-based moral values also can favorably affect their children’s levels of stress, depression and drug use later on.

Is there a tension between the yearning for scientific certainty and the intuitive nature of faith?

I feel that tension constantly as a scientist and a believer. I’m always challenging myself; you have to be objective as a scientist, to observe without reading into things. But the wisdom of the scriptures has endured through thousands of years, applied by believers through the ages in many different groups and cultures. About 80 percent of Americans today believe in God, nearly 90 percent in a higher power, and 84 percent of the world’s people have religious faith. Such faith must serve some kind of function for it to have persisted throughout the millennia.

There is much that is still unknown, and may not be knowable from a scientific perspective. You need to use common sense and intuition. It requires a leap of faith, but once you do it, everything falls into line—though I admit as a scientist I keep trying to understand things from a rational perspective.

What are the pathways by which spirituality contributes to health?

Science supports firsthand experience; that the virtues instilled by a religious path ultimately lead to better decision making, relationships and greater well-being. They help to neutralize negative emotions. These benefits accrue through adulthood and yield fruit into old age. The coping mechanism that spiritual practices provide is also important. It helps us to tolerate and navigate difficult situations and integrate meaning and purpose into daily life.

I don’t think science can prove to us that faith leads to divine healing. But through natural mechanisms alone, ones that we can understand and study, tremendous evidence exists to show that it benefits health and maybe even longevity.

Chiropractic Care Restores Body to Optimal Function

very cell in your body is hardwired to be healthy. When we go to a chiropractor, it is more than joint mobilization, or what many call “back cracking”. The main reason we should be receiving a chiropractic adjustment is to relieve pressure on our nerve system; this is critical because it controls and coordinates every aspect of the body.

The human body has self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms. We are designed to function, heal and recreate from the inside out as the body works to maintain a balanced functioning state.

For example, it strives to actively keep our blood pressure, blood sugar and heart rate within a normal range. This requires that millions of messages be transported from the brain down the spine, and then out to

the organs, tissues and cells. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to clear any interference in that pathway.

Common issues that can be helped include difficulty conceiving, depression, pain and dependence on painkillers, inadequate sleep, numbness and tingling, sinus infections, digestion challenges, and breathing problems, among others. This doesn’t happen by “cracking a back,” but rather when pressure comes off the central nervous system and the body is again able to heal itself.

Unfortunately, it seems the expectation in America is that we are supposed to be sick, and that there is always a solution—usually found in a bottle. This belief system is crumbling. Reactive health care is failing; we are seeing more degenerative

disease—such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis—than ever before. We must be proactive and optimize our health so we too don’t follow that path. Research tells us that genetics account for only about one-third of how long and well we live; the rest is under our control. In other words, our state of health is a result of how much we do to be healthy. Health is built by our daily lifestyle choices.

Our health conditions are the culmination of the body’s inability to adapt to the stressors placed upon it on a regular basis. When we come to this realization, it leaves us with two choices: remove the stress or increase the body’s ability to adapt to it. Chiropractic care can help with the latter. Stressors cause spinal shifts within the inner framework of the body, thereby impairing or impeding our body’s selfhealing forces. This structural imbalance leads to an impaired nervous system, which can reduce immune function, concentration, and recovery from illness and injury. It could lessen athletic performance, digestive function and even alter behavior.

When we look at the nervous system, any structural imbalance that occurs becomes part of our pattern as time passes.

If this cartilage system is shifted, altered or distorted, it creates an inhibition or interference in the neurological system. That pattern becomes ours as we get older, and it’s much more difficult to correct or to set right. The goal in a chiropractic office is to maintain the integrity of the spine and nervous system, and the earlier we start, the better.

Instead of focusing on the lost health, deterioration, energy decrease, immune system suppression and other negative effects of nerve interference, focus on the untapped potential for health and vitality available to the body through chiropractic care.

Choosing a Chiropractor How to Find the Best One for You

hiropractic medicine is known for its non-surgical approach to chronic pain and other musculoskeletal conditions, but also has much more to offer. However, finding the right doctor can be as daunting as shopping for a comfortable pair of shoes. Here, three reputable practitioners talk about securing individualized care and getting the most out of chiropractic.

Address Specific Needs Clarifying the desired outcome is helpful, because some clients are just looking for a quick fix to reduce pain, while others may be seeking overall better health, lasting wellness and an improved quality of life.

“Due to insurance issues, we’ve become known as pain doctors, but that’s not the full extent of chiropractic,” explains Dr. Michelle Robin, owner of Your Wellness Connection and the educational DrMichelleRobin.com website, in Shawnee, Kansas. “Also, you can see more than one chiropractor, as each has their own strength.”

Dr. Michael Aho, of Crosstown Chiropractic, in Chicago, agrees. “Chiropractic care encompasses many styles, so 22

one of the biggest variables is the type of treatment the doctor uses. Most offices commonly treat neck, mid-back and low back pain. If you have a specific shoulder, knee or foot problem, you may want to find a doctor that frequently treats those issues. If you are pregnant, choose a chiropractor that has experience working with pregnant women.”

“There are more than 140 different chiropractic techniques. Some are light touch, while others are aggressive. Some are hands-on and some use instruments for adjusting. It’s important that the doctor’s approach resonates with your nature,” advises Dr. Jackie St.Cyr of the Innate Chiropractic Healing Arts Center, in Houston.

Robin advises that sitting in a doctor’s reception room to just observe and trusting our intuition is helpful before moving forward with a consultation.

Ask Questions First, find out if a chiropractor has embraced either a conventional medical or holistic model, and then delve more deeply to find the right approach and level of care.

“Ask how long a doctor has practiced and their governing philoso-

phy. Do they treat the full spine or focus on the point of pain, and what range of techniques do they apply? You want them to know your spine before they adjust it; make sure they conduct a new patient exam,” suggests St.Cyr. An exam may include a thermography scan and X-rays.

Helpful questions include what to expect during the initial visit, recommended frequency of treatment, the desired doctor’s office hours and how treatment might benefit a particular condition. Because most chiropractic offices offer compatible treatments, also ask about complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage therapy, heat therapy, and interferential current therapy using minute electrical pulses for deep tissue pain relief.

Be Consistent “You shouldn’t expect instant results,” says Aho. “You’ll benefit the most if you don’t wait too long after first experiencing symptoms of a problem before starting treatment, and are consistent with your treatment.”

Being proactive can foster good results.

St.Cyr concurs, stating, “When patients follow their chiropractor’s recommended routine of regular corrective care, they get the best results.

Be consistent with visits and do your customized spinal exercises; they’ve been proven to work.”

Robin expounds that not following through with homecare is a common pitfall for patients. “Like dental care, you always need to do something for your spine every day, be it stretching, other exercise or good nutrition.”

She notes that everyone’s response to chiropractic is different. “Be realistic.

If you’ve experienced injuries or accidents, it will take longer, and your healing might look different from that of someone else that is free of injuries and follows a healthier diet. Sometimes people give up on chiropractic instead of finding a chiropractor that is good for them. You wouldn’t give up going to the dentist, and the same should apply to chiropractic care.”

Ancient Techniques Made Accessible

ew Age” healing approaches seem to pop up and become fashionable overnight these days. Through the help of social media, there is a tendency for these things to go viral into mainstream awareness in a way they simply couldn’t before. There seems to be specific heightened openness around sound and vibrational healing. Some of this is due to the esthetically pleasing look-

ing and sounding tools like crystal bowls, gongs, bells and more that also double as beautiful decorative pieces for the home.

The irony is there is nothing new about these tools; the use of them for healing and transformation dates back to ancient times in cultures across the globe.

Throughout history, the majority of indigenous cultures viewed the world as we know it as “sound”. They also assumed

that energy flows through all things, like the trees, streams, ocean waves and even sedentary objects like rocks. Whether you see, hear, feel or believe it, everything in the universe is in a state of vibration.

This is important because it widens our perspective; it turns out that “sound” is much more than what falls between our ears. Sound is a powerful vibratory energy that envelops us. If harnessed and utilized correctly, it can prove to be beneficial and serve us well in self-healing. If you have ever experienced live music close up, you may have felt the sound waves shower over your body, causing your bones to tingle and body hair to stand on end.

Sound is an accessible healing modality; you can work with it on your own on a regular daily basis, and don’t have to break the bank in the process. For chronic or acute conditions, you may want to seek the support of a skilled shamanic practitioner or sound healing therapist, but for general maintenance and restorative balance it is possible to use a simple drum, rattle, hum or your own singing voice at home. People can use their bodies as a percussion instrument and voice as a tool for self-expression.

It is often assumed that drums and rattles are used in all shamanic healing traditions, but this isn’t necessarily true. In actuality, they simply make the most of whatever tool is readily available in their natural surroundings, like medicinal plant leaves, sticks, stones, bones and voice, which is the shaman’s ultimate healing tool of choice.

We all have the ability to heal ourselves. A shaman’s role is simply to bring balance by restoring the natural flow of life by serving as a catalyst to remove all blockages and obstructions. Sound has the ability to travel beyond deep tissue and get to those hard-to-reach areas, even deep tissue, organs and bones.

Starting Your Sound Healing at Home

Find a Simple Instrument/Tool You don’t have to blow your budget on fancy musical instruments or expensive healing tools. You can purchase a simple rattle/shaker at a music store or make one yourself by placing dried beans in a plastic water bottle. Or simply use your voice.

You always have it with you, and it sounds great in the shower.

Create Time Before you begin this process it’s important that you honor and give yourself the undivided attention you deserve. 7-15 minutes is all you need. If you can’t find time to do this every day, simply start off with two days a week. For example, start

with Tuesday and Fridays at sunrise, and put it into your calendar.

Set Intention (The Key Step) Let go of distracting thoughts. Setting a focused and strong intention leads to greater results, especially when you are working on targeted areas. Frequency is the actual sound you create with your instrument or vocals. The energy behind the sound is the intent, which gets projected into the sound. The key is combining the two, because one without the other may not yield the result you seek.

Create Your Specific Sound We are all vibratory luminous beings, but we are unique in our own little ways and respond to certain sounds differently.

It’s good to know your sonic prescriptions.

You may find certain sounds soothing, but others agitating. If you choose to start off using your voice, simply sound out the vowel sounds A-E-I-O-U in rhythmic patterns, allowing yourself to explore with low and high octaves. Over time, certain “Icaros” soul songs will flow through you.

If you decide you want to start off with a drum or rattle, focus and create a simple repetitive rhythmic beat to help induce a trance-like state. Once you get comfortable with your routine, you can combine voice, rattle and/or drum.

Envisioning Now the final stepis to imagine a spherical egg-shaped energy field surrounds you. Whether you’re in the bath, a quiet room or outdoors, allow yourself to feel radiant light showering over your body and targeted areas. The combination and intentionality of the frequency of sound and vision will help facilitate the healing and restorative process.

Sound is the Music of Healing Enduring Medicine Carries Us into the Future

W

hat makes sound and music so extraordinary? It could be the exquisite combination of vibration, resonance and frequency. Everything is in vibration—including the trees, our food, cars, the earth—everything is energy.

Frequency and density go hand in hand.

For example, the higher the frequency, the less dense and, quite possibly, the purer the matter; the reverse is also true. A state of bliss is a much higher vibration than anger. Since bliss and love carry much less resistance, they can naturally float above the lower vibrational emotions like anger and fear. What is it about music and sound that possess this extraordinary power to move us, give us chills, assist us in our path to wholeness and touch the divine?

Modern medicine can now measure, and thus confirm, the effectiveness of sound as a means to promote healing.

Sound is a type of energy medicine that has 30

the ability to move and clear energy in our physical, spiritual and emotional bodies; it can create the sacred space in which the body can heal from pain, stress disorders, depression, emotional roller coasters and more. The late Mitchell Gaynor, MD, a New York oncologist and clinical professor of medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, used sound healing practices since the early 1990s. “Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: it may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more homeostatically; it may calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, which in turn help to regulate the immune system—the healer within,” he said.

the way the body reacts to Bach or Mozart, pop, rock, rap or even jazz. Does the body relax or constrict? How does the mind respond to the musical or sound stimuli?

Our organs, energy centers and auric field resonate to their own frequency; because our body it responds in accordance to our innermost thoughts and feelings. When those frequencies become out of balance or out of tune, they often reflect in our physical and mental health and well-being.

When we are in a state of alignment with ourselves or our highest truth, and in a state of flow, our physical body reflects that as a state of health, vibrancy and overall wellness.

According to sound healing pioneer Jonathan Goldman, “When we are in a state of health, we’re like an extraordinary orchestra that’s playing a wonderful symphony of the self. But what happens if the second violin player loses her sheet music?

She begins to play out of tune, and pretty soon the entire string section sounds bad.

Pretty soon, in fact, the entire orchestra is off. This is a metaphor for disease.”

If we consider lyrics, they are not only words, but words with the power of emotion behind them. Words have a specific vibration, as does each letter. The work of the Japanese researcher Dr. Masuru Emoto and his “Messages from Water” support this theory. In his work, the team attached words to glasses filled with water and froze them. Pictures of the water molecules were taken before and after the glasses were frozen. The findings were amazing. The water molecules in the glass with the words love and gratitude attached were shaped like the most beautiful symmetrical snowflakes.

The water glasses containing words such as hate and anger housed crystals that were conceivably unrecognizable malformations with not a single ounce of symmetry.

Every thought and every word is, in itself, a facet of sound and has an exact pitch, an exact frequency (or a cycle) that resonates with perfection. A blade of grass, for example, resonates at the frequency 528Hz (or cycles), the same frequency that is used for DNA repair by scientists, which also corresponds to a pitch. Sounds that are of optimal benefit to us most likely have a healing influence upon the body because

they influence the geometric patterns and organization of cells and living systems.

The beauty of sound is that it is powerful and multifaceted and yet simple. Sound can be used to heal on a deep cellular level.

Vibrational and sound healing techniques are widely offered and effective through the concept of resonance and entrainment. During our waking state, the normal frequency of our brain waves is that of beta. Sound tools entrain the brain to move into the deeper alpha and theta brain wave frequencies, which are the frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states, clarity of mind and intuition.

Entrainment is when the dominant vibration of one tone or frequency changes the less dominant one. Sound or sonic entrainment has been used by medicine men and women, and shamans from different cultures since prehistoric days. The ability to create altered states of consciousness through drumming, chanting and music is probably as old as music itself. According to Jeanne Achterberg in her book, Imagery in Healing, that analysis of shamanic drumming encompasses a frequency range of from 0.8 to 5.0Hz or cycles per second, which she refers to as “theta driving capacity.” Tibetan Singing bowls, bells (tingshas), Peruvian whistles and gongs have been used by their respective cultures for centuries. One of the most powerful, yet sometimes overlooked instruments for healing is the human voice.

The voice is most powerful because it can transmit intention far more directly than through an instrument alone. It is a healing tool that is divinely individual and exists within us all. The human voice contains tones and overtones that can work the physical and

subtle energy bodies. Electronic instruments and machines do not have the full spectrum of harmonics, and are therefore limited in their therapeutic potential. Toning, chanting and vocalizing mantras are ways to use the voice in a group or alone. Group chanting has been described as life-changing or spiritually profound by those experiencing it for the first time. Even in cases where there has been no personal participation, the energies raised during chanting will affect all present. Through the regular use of sound plus intention, we have the ability to shift the vibration, thus creating a path to wholeness for ourselves and on our planet.

“In the beginning there was the Word.” The “Word” quite clearly refers to sound as it is the primal energy which is the “Godforce” or creative force of the universe. In the Hindu tradition, the word “aim” or “om” was the sound that initiated the Creation.

And the big bang theory? According to scientists and physicists, it was actually an extraordinarily deep subatomic note, much slower and deeper than anything that could be heard. No matter what school of thought we resonate with, we have come full circle.

Everything is vibration. Everything is sound. So let us raise our vibration and sound together, and let us sing with and for our New Earth.

Healing through Vibration Wouldn’t It Be Nice to Feel Great All the Time?

ood Vibrations,” an anthem of our youth by the Beach Boys in 1966, was the “vibe” of the times. The saying is common today but the meaning of vibrations for the Baby Boomer generation and their families is quite different now. The goal is still to be on the good side of the vibration ledger but when the “vibes” turn bad, it’s time to find a tuning mechanism to return us to health by resonating with the innate intelligence of the body.

For thousands of years, before the hospitals and medications of today, homo sapiens falling out of healthy energetic balance and alignment turned to ancient methods of healing. Now it appears we are returning to the ancient arts to heal ourselves and our families. When the body falls into a state of disharmony or chaos instead of vibrating harmoniously and in a coherent state, we are out of balance. Pythagoras—known as the father of mathematics, geometry, music, harmonics and philosophy—discovered that we can assist the healing process by introducing sound and harmonic frequencies to the body. This would balance it and return it to an optimal state. That is how music as medicine was born. Pythago-

ras’ music principle of layered consonant intervals, spacing and harmonic ratios was designed to bring order to chaos and discord, which initiated a specific healing effect. This would allow alignment of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Vibrational healing has been relied on for centuries to not only alleviate the symptoms of the malady, but to also find the root cause of the illness, which can often be emotional. This allows the energy, called qi or chi, to once again flow and power the cells in the particular part of the body to reset into healing mode. One of the reasons for new interest in this process may be the lack of side effects, even though some individuals experience a herxheimer reaction while they rebalance with the proper vibrational frequency. This shows that the healing process has begun and will subside in a short while.

It is not always easy to align this process with those searching for healing while still clinging to beliefs which question the efficacy of the method. The good news is there is an increasing amount of science and data available to support these methods, especially those developed in the quantum field. The simple explanation is that because everything vibrates at an assigned frequency and is a mathematical equation, determining the proper healing codes can correct the illness immediately. Applied in this manner, vibrational healing can be the quickest road to wellness.

It is important to note that the field of vibrational healing lives in an interchangeable world where the terms energy and frequency are often used to describe similar events. Albert Einstein stated, “Everything in life is vibration.” From that we have learned, even illnesses have their own vibration and frequencies.

It was determined that this was the key to finding wellness, but in most unaccustomed ways. Einstein also had his challenges in explaining how electricity works for those who couldn’t see it but, in time, understood its power.

Vibration has a home in the 12 universal laws: “Everything in the universe moves, vibrates and travels in circular patterns.

The same principles of vibration in the physical world apply to our thoughts, feelings, desires and wills in the etheric world. Each sound, thing and every thought has its own vibrational frequency, unique to itself. These vibrations offer a roadmap to returning one to health.”

The origins or history of vibrational healing are as varied as modalities themselves. As a global community, the wellness methods and secrets of ancient cultures have landed here in America from India, the Far East and Egypt.

When our bodies have become worn down and sick, it is because there are energetic blockages and imbalances in our glands, organs and systems. This can be the result of many factors, such as toxins, environment, stress and anxiety. Adjusting these vibrational trouble spots starts at the cellular level where the cells have lost the required energy they need to heal your body. Once corrected, these cells will return the body to better health, as they are designed to do.

There are many proven and some newer methodologies in the areas of vibrational healing. The most common are sound, light, color, aroma, Reiki, acupuncture, massage, flower essences, water, kinesiology, homeopathy, radionics, crystals and even intuition through thought.

The higher the body’s vibration, the better our health, according to Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology, who built the first frequency monitor to measure human vibration. He determined that the average healthy frequency of the human body was between 62-72 Hz. When frequency drops below those levels, the immune system becomes compromised. He further found that colds and flu start at 57-60 Hz, disease at 58 Hz and cancer at 42 Hz.

Sound is perhaps the most enjoyable methodology for us all to take part in, as is the warmth and power vibration that comes from the light source healing properties of the sun. The Beach Boys combined the two, along with water through surfing, and their music makes us happier with better “vibes” and higher vibrations.

Many cultures incorporated singing and chanting in healing processes by vibrating the vocal cords. Next, many discovered or invented other objects to initiate healing vibration and energy, including tuning forks, gongs, didgeridoos, sound bowls, binaural beats, and various types of drums and musical instruments. This category also includes essential oils and flower essence; they help to raise our vibration out of the frequencies where illness lives.

With more scientific means of measurement and technological advancements, there are many new devices that play in this arena. These are additions to ancient healing practices that marry the wisdom of the past to newer delivery models of today.

As always, due diligence is encouraged as the body is the finest healing device ever developed; vibrational healing intent should be to assist our own process by removing energetic blockages that starve the body and its life-affording energy.

Some popular devices are the Rife Frequency Generator multiwave oscillator, Chiren/biophoton light therapy, scalar wave technology, BEMER mats, aura imaging and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), to name a few.

Vibration, like so many things, has mirror and yin/yang energy; it can heal or harm through thought and intent as proven through Dr. Masaru Emoto’s study of how thoughts directly impact on our environment. His work with water crystals proved that positive energy produced desired results while negative thought or intent produced ugly outcomes.

Brainwave Training for Better Health

Measurable Energy Therapies Improve CNS Function

eople often assume that energy medicine therapies are hard to quantify, but some can be measured and proven scientifically. PEMF, biofeedback and neurofeedback are quantifiable scientific therapies backed by brainwave training research.

These are still viewed as unconventional, however, because instead of depending on chemistry, brainwave training is a therapy that focuses on energy or physics to heal.

We are primarily energetic beings. The brain is a complex organ that is made up of billions of brain cells called neurons.

In order for our brains to work, these neurons communicate with each other using electricity. The combination of millions of neurons sending signals at once produces an enormous amount of electrical activity in the brain. Sensitive medical equipment, such as an EEG, can measure electricity levels over areas of the scalp.

This dynamic, interconnected web of biological energy is impacted by everything in our environment. Neurofeedback provides brainwave training to our system; it focuses on our central nervous system, which directly improves the brain’s ability to selfregulate. Without self-regulation, disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) can result in anxiety, depression, headaches and other conditions. Neurofeedback is a directly alters brainwave function.

Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. We have different brainwaves that vary based on their frequency, ranging from the low activity to high activity (delta, theta, alpha and beta). Everyone has the same brainwaves, but people do not have the same pattern and levels of brainwaves.

Certain patterns are associated with specific conditions.

Most people are born with a relatively healthy nervous system and regulated brainwave function. Genetic and environmental factors—such as diet, stress and external environment influences—can impact brain wave functioning and the CNS. This lack of self-regulation can lead to a variety of symptoms, including lack of focus, anxiety, mood issues and physical symptoms. Dysregulation reflects an under-responsive, over-responsive or unstable nervous system.

Engineered brainwave training—such as neurofeedback— uses the simple concept of reinforcement to improve regulation of the brain and CNS. This brainwave-training therapy gives visual and auditory reinforcements to help the brain change its own behavior as a form of associative learning. In neurofeedback, the associative learning is learning to perceive the feeling of the signal.

By creating new electrical activity through a process of measurement and reinforcement, the brain learns to self-regulate, which calms the nervous system. This reduces or eliminates symptoms.

behavioral or mood issues, chronic pain, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric issues associated with Lyme and PANS/PANDAS, headaches/migraines, concussions and a variety of other issues.

Almost any brain—regardless of its level of function or dysfunction—can be trained to function better. Neurofeedback can be used with all ages.

ADHD often means that a person has too many slow brainwaves frontally—at theta, or a lower frequency—and not enough fast, higher frequency beta brainwaves. This brainwave imbalance makes it hard to stay focused in non-preferred areas because the brain is bored. This is why decreasing theta brainwave and increasing beta brainwave training can help people with ADHD.

There are more than 3,000 peer-reviewed brainwave training research studies spanning four decades that demonstrate its effectiveness (Lubar & Shouse, 1976). Current research supports that neurofeedback improves a variety of specific issues and symptoms, from seizures to ADHD and anxiety.

Recent meta-analyses document the effectiveness of neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD (Arns, de Ridder, Strehl, Breteler and Coenen, 2009) in reducing inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Research from Gani et al. (2008) demonstrates the long-term effectiveness of neurofeedback, as they found that improvements in behavior and attention were stable six months and two years after completion of therapy.

Neurofeedback produces lasting changes that puts people on a path to wellness, and improves brain functioning and mental health. It works synergistically with other therapies as it focuses on regulating the CNS, which can reduce symptoms simultaneously.

Neurofeedback requires time and energy commitment as teaching the brain to change often requires therapy two times a week over several months. The easy process consists of patients receiving reinforcement while watching a movie in a comfortable chair. For most, symptoms gradually decrease, while for others, change can be dramatic depending on symptoms or root issues.

Individuals with CNS dysregulation should consider effective, safe and research-based therapies that work with the body’s own rhythm, such as neurofeedback, biofeedback and PEMF. Tapping into the body’s own frequencies can help reduce stress; improve sleep, mood and attention; increase processing speed; decrease pain or discomfort; and create feelings of wellness.

iofeedback, also known as neurofeedback, is a relaxation technique that monitors internal body states; it is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension) with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving and relaxing, they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored.

hile they are based on different teachings and employ diverse protocols, each of the energy healing modalities is a method of increasing, activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi) of an individual. Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies with healing intent or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). These various techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems, and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. These modalities can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others.

Due to the multi-layered complexity of these healing practices, there is a debate as to how best to study them. Conducting the conventional randomized controlled trials has presented a challenge for researchers given the current technological inability to consistently document changes in the biofield. That said, patients in a number of studies with Reiki, the best known of these techniques, indicated that the modality reduced anxiety and pain, while improving relaxation, fatigue, depression and overall well-being. ater is a dynamic medium, constantly changing from liquid to solid to gas. Water movement in nature is typically

“We are not taught how to have a relationship with money on a psychological or spiritual level; it isn’t part of our culture,” explains Bari Tessler, a Boulder, Colorado, financial therapist and author of The Art of Money. “The majority of our parents and grandparents didn’t receive a financial education, so they don’t understand emotions that relate to money or how to talk about it.”

Tessler works with individuals, couples and creative entrepreneurs to help them “claim their worth in the world and bring their skills and values into the marketplace,” she says. Money is a frequent source of tension among couples, but

Tessler notes it wasn’t even talked about in her graduate-level psychology training.

“Money is emotional territory for people.

You can’t just go to a financial planner, plot a budget and be on your merry way,” she observes.

Shifting Our Perceptions To change our relationship with money, Tessler says we need to understand our “money stories” that include the ways in which our personal experiences, together with subconsciously inherited familial and cultural attitudes, shape how we think about money.

“The first step to changing our money habits is being willing to deal with the tough issues,” says Mayuri Onerheim, author of Money Spirituality Consciousness, a retired accountant and spiritual teacher of the Diamond Approach of selfrealization, in Larkspur, California. “There is no change without some discomfort. It’s part of the spiritual journey.”

Self-care, forgiveness and acceptance

are important throughout this process, advises Tessler, because many people bring feelings of guilt and shame to their relationship with money. She recommends doing a “body check-in” to become aware of our physical reaction to related issues, whether it’s going on a reckless spending spree or bracing to ask for a raise. This stage paves the way for the practical work of learning to manage our money in alignment with our values, goals and dreams. It begins with developing practices to track, review and reflect upon spending and earning patterns.

Tactical Tools Tessler recommends utilizing one of many free financial tracking tools like Mint. com, ynab.com or MoneyMinderOnline. com. She also suggests we rename their preloaded budget categories to reflect our personal relationships to the areas of spending (e.g., “sanctuary” rather than mortgage; “my dream vacation” for savings targeted for time off; or “life happens” for late fees).

For an enlightened view of cash flows, Onerheim suggests translating what was spent on something into the hours it took to earn the money. “This perspective can transform how we allocate resources and what we’re willing to spend money on,” she says.

Vicki Robin, co-author of the bestseller Your Money or Your Life, espouses a similar approach: thinking of money in terms of hours of life energy. “Continually asking yourself whether you actually got fulfillment in proportion to life energy spent in each subcategory awakens the natural sense of knowing when enough is enough,” she writes.

Tessler and Onerheim both encourage rethinking the idea that all earning is good and all spending is bad: “It’s about balancing needs and wants, and we need joy in

life. It’s not about saving every penny and not enjoying yourself,” says Onerheim.

A Rewarding Journey Becoming financially conscious ultimately helps us fulfill our responsibility to be a good steward of the planet’s resources, according to Onerheim. “Money is a representation of myself in the world, so I want to take responsibility for where my money goes.”

“Financial integrity is achieved by learning the true impact of your earning and spending, both on your immediate family and on the planet,” agrees Robin. “It is knowing what is enough money and material goods to keep you at the peak of fulfillment—and what is just excess and clutter.”

All call for celebrating progress on the journey to financial well-being and know-how. “Take baby steps and reward yourself along the way,” counsels Tessler.

personal trainer and owner of the Studio Women’s Fitness Center, in Scott, Louisiana. Bumpus often uses kettlebells in strength and conditioning exercise classes to afford a balanced full-body workout that’s fun and engaging.

“Consistent kettlebell training imitates and strengthens movements we use to function in daily life,” explains Athena Concannon, an American College of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer and healthy lifestyle blogger at AchieveWithAthena.com, in Boston. For example, actions like lifting grocery bags and standing up from a sitting position become easier. She notes that the growing popularity of different kinds of functional training in the past decade has bolstered recognition of kettlebell benefits as people seek ways to move away from assisted weight machines toward natural body movements.

Kettlebells now show up in circuit training, CrossFit and both functional fitness and step classes. People see results because, “It takes multiple small and large muscle groups to redirect movement while maintaining control with a kettlebell, requiring more muscle recruitment than with a traditional dumbbell; it’s because its shape provides unbalanced weight resistance that strengthens a multitude of different muscles,” explains Julie Joffrion, owner of All-Inclusive Health, in New Orleans.

Participants completing 20 minutes of a high-intensity kettlebell workout burned an average of 20 calories per minute in a study sponsored by the American Council of Exercise. The researchers compared this level to running a six-minute mile and credited the more intensive calorie burn as a result of challenging the total body, which quickly raises the heart rate when performed with speed. The study concluded that kettlebell training is especially beneficial for those that want to fit in a time-efficient, total body workout.

Proponents go a step further, claiming that kettlebells can deliver increased benefits in half the time of traditional workouts. Bumpus advises, “If you’re solely interested in building strength and muscle power, stick with free weights, but if you’re looking for a way to burn fat while increasing muscular and cardiovascular endurance, kettlebells are a valuable option to incorporate into your training.”

f we are all endowed with the same potential or creative life force, why is it that some are able to harness that energy? Why are others, no matter how creative they are, unable to make their dreams come true? Or, if they do reach their goal, why do they struggle to sustain it or, even worse, sabotage it?

Quantum physicists discovered that molecules, which are made up of atoms, are bundles of energy and consist of nearly empty space. They have revealed that the distance between one atom and the next is quite vast. They theorize that the distance between the nucleus and electrons of the atom are proportionally greater than the distance between our planet and the sun.

If we were to remove the space between the particles of the atom and condensed them, they would indeed be minute. So what is the space between the parts of the atom? It has been called many things, such as the void, the quantum field or even spirit.

Some say our thoughts become things. The architect who builds the mighty 48

skyscraper must first imagine the plans, the combinations of metal and stone, and the feeling within the space to be created.

The entire building begins first as a mental picture. If we are seeding the quantum field with our mental pictures, then how can we create the life we want?

There is a psycho-spiritual technology available to us all but we need to use it. By following these simple steps, we can be on our way to creating the life we have imagined.

The 2017 Chicken Marketing Summit in North Carolina involved hundreds of leaders from fast-food chains, marketing agencies and poultry production companies discussing the fact that Americans are eating less poultry—and what to do about it. Richard Kottmeyer, a senior managing partner at Fork to Farm Advisory Services, explained that Millennials need to be “inspired and coached” to consume more animal products, according to an article published on WattAgNet.com, an industry website.

“Compared to their parents, Millennials are more likely to believe in evolution and accept that climate change is occurring. They seek out facts and science to better understand a complex world, but the poultry industry doesn’t have any fact-based information to defend its cruel, unsanitary practices,” states animal rights advocate Nathan Runkle via EcoWatch.com. The majority of chickens raised for meat have been bred to grow so large so quickly that they collapse under their own unnatural weight. North Carolina has enacted an “ag-gag” bill, making it illegal to photograph or videotape animal abuse.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) is advising hospitals in improving patient menus by adding healthy, plant-based options and removing processed meats, which have been linked to 60,000 cardiovascular deaths annually.

The ACC Heart-Healthy Food Recommendations for Hospitals states, “At least one plant-based main dish should be offered and promoted at every meal.” ACC also urges that processed meats such as bacon, sausage, ham, hot dogs and deli meats should not be offered at all. These guidelines extend to hospital cafeterias and onsite restaurants.

The American Medical Association has also passed a resolution that calls on hospitals to provide similarly healthy meals. Processed meats are now considered carcinogenic to humans, according to the World Health Organization. A 50gram serving a day—one hot dog or two strips of bacon—increases colorectal cancer risk by 18 percent.

“Too many heart disease patients have had their recovery undermined by bacon and hot dogs on their hospital trays,” says Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the nonprofit Physicians Committee.

he New York University Langone Medical Center recently reported that 74 percent of Americans experience some form of digestive distress, a quarter are obese and more than 100 million U.S. adults are pre-diabetic and don’t know it.

While many blame such problems on eating wheat, some food scientists disagree, including those citing two major studies by Harvard researchers; following more than 100,000 people for 25 years, they concluded that those eating the most wheat compared to low-gluten folks had a 13 percent lower diabetes risk and no greater risk of heart disease.

While the standard American diet, which includes highly processed wheat, is likely responsible for many of these health concerns, plenty of science links a diet rich in whole grains, including whole wheat, to weight loss, better digestion and lower blood sugar. The Mediterranean Diet, replete with whole grains and wheat, is still revered as one of the healthiest-known diets.

Centenarians that live in the famed “blue zones”, recognized for their longevity-enhancing environment and lifestyles, eat a nonprocessed, whole-food diet rich in whole grains and wheat.

Many Americans that are gluten-sensitive today digested wheat fine when they were young. At some point, our ability to digest foods that are a bit harder to digest, like wheat and dairy, became compromised. It’s possible to reboot.

Delete Processed Foods

The first step toward reestablishing digestive strength is avoiding all processed foods. A study in the journal Diabetes Care linked a processed food diet to a 141 percent increase in belly fat, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. It further showed that a diet of whole grains, including wheat, reduced the risk of these health concerns by 38 percent.

Monitor these ingredients to achieve a healthier diet. n Avoid all added sugars or artificial sweeteners. Allow nothing more than six grams of naturally occurring sugar per serving.

Highly processed vegetable oils are used as preservatives in most packaged foods, including bread. Processing these oils renders them indigestible. Linked to congestion of the liver and gallbladder, they disable liver bile so it can’t break down either good or bad fats, also making it insufficient to buffer stomach acids. Without adequate bile production to neutralize stomach acid, the stomach won’t produce the needed acid to digest proteins like gluten and the casein in dairy.

This malady has effected a huge spike in gallbladder surgeries and epidemic levels of obesity, high blood sugar and food intolerances.

To boost bile flow, enjoy these foods daily: n Eat one red beet and one apple a day—either raw, cooked, juiced or blended. Add celery and make a bile-flow smoothie. n Consume one teaspoon of both coconut oil and high-quality olive oil per day. n Eat more artichokes, bitter roots and leafy greens. n Drink fennel and fenugreek tea with meals.

Small changes in daily eating routines translate into healthier weight for America’s kids.

n 2010, President Obama and Michelle Obama launched Let’s Move! as their signature initiative to tackle epidemic levels of U.S. childhood obesity. While modest progress has been made, it remains a public health crisis. A brief by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the obesity rate remained fairly stable at nearly 17 percent between 2011 and 2014 for children 2 to 19 years old.

Caused mainly by inadequate physical activity, unhealthy diets and rare genetic factors, obesity increases the risk of significant health problems, including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, plus joint and breathing issues.

“We must launch our own family anti-obesity campaigns,” urges pediatrician Ricardo Riesco, co-owner of Peds Care, in Dalton, Georgia. “Along with increasing activity levels, we can encourage healthier eating habits at home and lead by example.”

Portions Matter In today’s “supersize-me” climate, teaching youngsters about appropriate portion sizes is imperative in fostering healthy eating habits.

“It’s often hard for parents to find time 52

to cook a meal at home,” Riesco acknowledges. “Too often, parents will pick up fast food for dinner, which is typically higher in calories and fat, plus the portion sizes are far too large.” When parents can’t prepare a meal from scratch, a frozen, boxed meal can be a better alternative than fast food.

“The portions are more appropriate, so there’s more control of how much a child eats.” Tasty frozen organic meals are now available at many grocers.

“Although almost everything can be enjoyed in moderation, decreasing or eliminating high-calorie, high-fat, lownutrient treats can also help children develop healthy eating habits for life and prevent obesity,” says Registered Dietitian Wendy Palmer, manager of child wellness and a certified health education specialist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “A medium-sized apple or banana, or a cup of baby carrots with hummus, is a nutrientrich snack for kids. Avoid snacks that have no nutritional value or are coated in sugar.”

No Sugary Drinks “There’s a strong correlation between sugary drinks and overweight, obese children,” observes Palmer. “I recommend that parents remove all sugary sodas, sports drinks and juice boxes from their children’s diets.

Water and unsweetened seltzer water are great alternatives.”

Palmer notes that many eating patterns are set before a child turns 3, so limiting all sugary drinks, including juices, is an important component of teaching young children healthier eating habits that will last a lifetime.

Studies suggest a strong link between obese children and obese adults, so for parents concerned that their child’s cute baby fat has turned into something more, the time to act is now.

Don’t Overfeed Fido Plus Other Tips to Keep a Dog Cancer-Free

Although the causes are not well understood, we can give our companion the best possible chance of prevention.

Avoid Pet Obesity

In studies across species, caloric restriction has been shown to help prevent tumor development and progression. Obe-

sity is strongly linked to increased cancer risk in humans and is assumed so in dogs.

For people, cancer is also connected with excessive glucose, increased insulin sensitivity, inflammation and oxidative stress. Overfeeding a dog is not a loving thing to do.

Choose an AntiInflammatory Diet

Creating or promoting inflammation raises cancer risk by facilitating abnormal cells to proliferate. Current research suggests cancer is actually a chronic, inflammatory disease. Because cancer cells require

the glucose in carbohydrates as an energy source, limit or eliminate carbs present in processed grains, fruits with fructose and starchy vegetables. Cancer cells generally can’t use dietary fats for energy, so appropriate amounts of good-quality fats are nutritionally healthy.

Another major contributor to inflammation is poor-quality, processed pet food, which is typically high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3. Omega-6s increase inflammation; omega-3s do the reverse.

A healthy, moist dog diet contains real, whole, organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) foods, preferably raw—also plenty of high-quality protein, including muscle meat, organs and bone; moderate amounts of animal fat; high levels of EPA and DHA (omega-3 fatty acids, such as those present in krill oil); and some fresh-cut ground veggies; plus antioxidant-rich fruit.

Consider adding both vitamin/mineral and other supplements like probiotics, digestive enzymes, medicinal mushrooms and super green foods. Work with a holistic or integrative veterinarian to determine the best regime.

Reduce Exposure to Toxins

Harmful toxins include chemical pesticides like flea and tick preventives, lawn chemicals, tobacco smoke, flame retardants and all common household cleaners. A six-year study by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, at Tufts University, showed that exposure to lawn pesticides, specifically those applied by lawn care companies, raised the risk of canine malignant lymphoma up to 70 percent.

Conventional flea and tick preventives are pesticides, whether spot-on treatments, pills, dips, solutions, shampoos or collars.

Chemical spot-on products attracted U.S. Environmental Protection Agency attention based on reports of 40,000 adverse events in 2008, including 600 animal deaths.

Because avoiding all toxins is nearly impossible, consider periodic detoxification based on a vet’s recommendation. For a dog with constant exposure to toxic chemicals all summer, a daily oral detox protocol is sound. If the only source is a monthly dose of a flea and tick product, limit a detox to the week after each pill or topical treatment.

Refuse Unnecessary Vaccinations

To properly maintain a dog’s first line of defense—the immune system—don’t overstimulate it with vaccines. Tailor vaccine protocols to minimize risk and maximize protection, considering the dog’s breed, background, nutritional status and overall vitality.

A good protocol with healthy puppies is to provide a single parvovirus and distemper vaccine at or before 12 weeks of age, and a second set after 14 weeks. Cautious vets then order a titer test (at a lab that uses the immunofluorescence assay method) two weeks after the last set of vaccines. If the dog has been successfully immunized, it’s protected for life.

If titer tests indicate low vaccine levels (unlikely), try a booster for only the specific viruses that titered low, and only those to which the animal has a real risk of exposure. Combination vaccines (four to eight viruses in one injection), a standard booster at many veterinary practices, is not recommended.

Maintain Physical Integrity Until at Least 18 to 24 Months of Age Studies from Purdue University, the University of California, Davis, and others show a clear link between spaying/neutering and increased cancer rates in dogs, especially large breeds. These include increased risk of osteosarcoma in Rottweilers neutered or spayed before their first birthday; double the risk of bone cancer in neutered or spayed large, purebred dogs versus intact (not neutered) dogs; and three to four times the cancer rates for spayed female golden retrievers versus intact females. Opting for ovary-sparing spays (hysterectomy) is another option that preserves sex hormones while rendering the animal sterile.

Applying these five suggestions in caring for a dog throughout its life offers a pet a good chance for a cancer-free and overall healthy, high-quality life.

Working Energetically with Animals

nimals enjoy energetic work, regardless of the modality. They do not have the walls up that some people may have surrounding these types of therapy. They know it works, no explanation is necessary and they let us know when they’re done receiving.

Working energetically with animals differs from working with people in approach and technique. While it is recommended to train with a practitioner that already works with animals, there are no special animal attunements required prior to working with animals.

Unlike working with people where the practitioner can answer questions and explain the procedure, communicating what is going on to the pet is through allowing the pet be a part of the set up.

Start with Setting the Right Mood Animal hearing is far more sensitive than ours. Sounds in the higher or lower spectrum can be irritating to them. However, the right music is soothing and healing.

Examples that pets seem to enjoy are classical or harp music, as well as music designed specifically for animals. All can be easily found online. In addition, artists 56

such as Steven Halpern, WholeTones and others have created music that is healing.

Some pets love singing bowls and gongs, others do not. We will find that, just like people, they have their own individual preference.

When an animal is not well, it creates tension within the household. Space clearing of the therapeutic area is a must. But, just as pets have more sensitive hearing, an animal’s sense of smell is greater than ours.

Before using anything with an odor—such as clearing sprays, sage or palo santo—let the animal sniff it. Watch their reaction. If they don’t like it, don’t use it. Space cleaning can also be accomplished with selenite crystal wands. The goal of space clearing is to move the stagnant energy and get it flowing again.

Essential oils can be used around dogs and horses if they are diffused in the air from a water-based diffuser or applied to strategically placed cotton balls. Essential oil can be denatured and release toxic fumes if used on anything heated, such as on open flame or hot plate, without being mixed in water. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapists’ guidelines recommend not using essential oils in any form around cats or birds.

Crystals are a wonderful addition to any therapeutic session with pets. Most pets will approve or disapprove of the selection in the same manner as scents.

If they don’t like the crystals, the pet will move away from them. The pet should never be left unattended with crystals within their reach, as they can be a choking hazard if swallowed or poisoned if the crystal contains heavy metals. Cinnabar and malachite are examples of crystals with heavy metals.

Many animals will come and go during the session, as they need a break from any hands-on therapy; however, they still may want to participate. Creating a den satisfies that need. It can simply be a space to move away from their person. For smaller pets, a covered crate at the other side of the room works well.

Work at Their Pace Shorter but more frequent sessions work well with animals. It’s also helpful to have a proxy on hand, such as a stuffed animal, as a physical substitute for the animal. It does not have to be similar in appearance.

The proxy can be connectd to the animal by physical touch or intention, or add a cord. It can be used for any or all of the session. It is especially handy for those pets that are not safe to have physical contact with.

Pay Attention to Body Language Working first with a practitioner that is familiar with the body language of the animals to be worked with is a good idea.

Pets in pain, or ones that simply have had enough of us touching them, may become a bite risk or worse; larger animals, such as horses and farm animals, can inflict serious bodily damage if we don’t pay attention to their signals.

Working with animals is rewarding and allows us to align the entire family. We cannot truly help people when our beloved pets are in need.

Crystal Therapy for Pets

A

form of vibrational medicine, crystal therapy works on the principle of entrainment, which is the tendency for two vibrating bodies to lock into synchronization so they vibrate in harmony. All crystals have a measureable and stable dominant vibrational rate, as do all living beings. However, the latter are subject to environmental factors, such as bacteria, stress, diet, viruses and other negative influences. Therefore, they operate at the lesser vibrational rate and not at peak efficiency.

Choosing the proper crystal or crystals can entrain an unhealthy body back to harmony so it can begin the healing process. Crystals work on any animal as well as in any environment. The energies of the crystals are consistent and gentle.

On occasion, a pet may even choose the crystals they wish to work with.

Crystals can help with many situations including: • Chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, Cushing’s disease, cancer • Joint problems, such as arthritis in the

spine, knees and hips • Convalescing from injury or surgery • Grieving • Behavioral problems • Adjusting to new situations, whether a loss or addition, such as a new home, spouse, baby, other pets, job or job hours • Preparing to cross over • Preventive wellness care

There are many ways to use the therapeutic properties of crystals. Place larger clusters near their bedding, on the outside of cages and aquariums, or in the corners of stalls. Attach crystal charms to or wrap crystals around their collars. Encircle your pet with small clusters or polished crystals.

Put polished stones in a drawstring bag and place the stones and bag under their bedding, attached to a cage, or anywhere above where they sleep, such as a shelf. Sew into halters, bedding, pillows, sweaters or other articles of pet clothing.

There are some safety considerations when using crystals. They may pose a choking risk if the pet were to swallow one. Many crystals contain heavy metals and would be

poisonous if swallowed. Placing crystals in an aquarium may also leach heavy metals into the water; make sure this does not become drinking water. Crystals will work from a short distance, so it is not necessary for them to be on the pet or within their reach. For crystal necklaces, make sure they are made from elastic for smaller animals and thin wire for larger. If the collar becomes caught on something, it needs to break.

Crystals are living energies from the earth and should be treated with care and respect. Be careful when they are stored, as many are fragile. Crystals like to sit on windowsills, but brightly colored ones may fade in direct sunlight. Moonlight, especially a full moon, is safe for all as the moon’s energies are gentler. Most crystals can be cleansed under running water, but those with a Mohs-scale hardness of less than five may break or dissolve. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is rated from one to 10 on the ability of one mineral to scratch another mineral. Softer stones may be cleansed with sage or Palo Santo.

e will celebrate the New Year with a full moon in Cancer on January 1. The moon is most comfortable in the sign of Cancer, and this thoughtful, introspective energy will be embodied in this first lunation of the year. We should take time to nurture ourselves and others in the light of this full moon.

On January 11, Mercury, our planet of communication, enters Capricorn. We may take on a direct, practical form of speaking and thinking. Use this disciplined energy to take on conversations that require a prudent touch. Be sure to use traditional chains of command when escalating issues because Capricorn the goat has deep respect for traditions and customs.

We have a new moon in Capricorn on January 16, which will connect what we feel with what we say. Mercury, already in Capricorn, will enhance this energy around a new 28-day cycle. This energy is extremely disciplined; use it to start something with a tangible outcome. The Cardinal Earth of Capricorn is determined to achieve something substantial, so shoot high with those new moon intentions.

On January 17, Venus, our planet of relationships, enters revolutionary Aquarius. Use this energy to think outside the box when it comes to partnerships, and not just for romantic relationships but all forms of personal connections. The eccentric energy may draw unconventional companions.

Sun enters Aquarius on January and will stay here for 30 days, so use this time to try new things and imagine different ways of living.

Mars enters Sagittarius on January 26.. Our warrior planet is back in a fiery sign, lighting a spark under our desire to move forward. Once Mars moves into Sagittarius, it’s a good time to make those plans, especially travel plans.

We end the month with a beautiful full moon and total lunar eclipse in Leo on January 31. This full moon will be intensified by the eclipse, so let that inner lion roar. Courage, drama and creativity and are all themes for this full moon.
