One of the most common and costly health issues in our American culture today is obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one third of adults in the US are obese. The prevalence of childhood obesity is also astonishing, affecting about 12.7 million children and adolescents (approximately 17%). Obesity-related medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer are well documented, costing billions annually. Then, there is the emotional cost of being overweight. Obsession with weight and self-image can stir up intense feelings of unworthiness and unhappiness—brutal unhappiness. While caloric intake and activity level play a vital role in weight management, our thoughts, beliefs and emotions can either help or sabotage our efforts to lose weight and keep it off. Eating a healthy diet, portion control and exercising regularly requires a lot of discipline, but is not necessarily a rocket science. However, awareness and healing of our thoughts and emotions that drive our eating behaviors can be far more complex, which is where holistic practitioners can make a huge difference in terms of achieving success. In our feature article: “Healthy Mind, Lighter Body: Losing Weight Involves Body, Mind and Emotions,” several local holistic practitioners offer insights to help us better understand our complicated relationship with food and how we can transform this relationship. Like most healing, it begins with a willingness to be patient and compassionate with ourselves and to do the inner work. Weight management is both an art and a science. Among our great reads this month are two articles written by local naturopathic physicians, Dr. Nina Manipon and Dr. Sara Frawley. Dr. Manipon suggests that issues with stressed adrenal glands could be a primary factor in feeling chronically tired. Dr. Frawley discusses the role of nutrition for the prevention of breast cancer susceptibility gene mutation, also known as BRCA. We are calling out to all of the wonderful green businesses and holistic practitioners here in New Haven and Middlesex counties! As you have already seen on page 3, we are offering a Special on advertising your business in our print Community Resource Guide and also on the Local Resources page of our website: NaturalNewHaven.com. Learning about the Benefits of Thermography for Breast Health
T
he New Haven County chapter of Holistic Moms Network will host its monthly meeting on May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Woodruff Family YMCA in Milford, Connecticut. Rachel Mazzarelli, MS, CCT, a certified clinical thermographer and the owner of Whole Health Thermography LLC, will talk about what digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), thermography and thermograms are. She will provide answers as to why DITI is a beneficial test to help monitor breast and overall health. The difference between mammograms, ultrasounds and thermography will also be covered in the workshop. A Q&A will follow as well. DITI is a 15-minute non-invasive test of physiology with no compression or radiation. By noting changes in the skin’s surface temperatures, thermograms can be used as an aid to note changes that can indicate early stage breast disease, and for monitoring therapy progress for conditions and injuries. Mazzarelli is also a certified Kripalu yoga teacher with a 6

esearchers from the United Kingdom’s University of Winchester have found that cycling improves brain function. The study tested the cognitive function of 17 physically active men in their 20s before and after two, 30-minute sessions on a stationary bike. The results showed significant cognitive improvements following each session. Biking to work is also a good way to reduce our carbon footprint, but breathing in exhaust fumes and other pollutants is a concern for street cyclists. Alexander Bigazzi, a transportation expert in the department of civil engineering and school of community and regional planning at the University of British Columbia, has studied the relationship between average-speed bicycle travel and inhalation of potentially harmful air. Using a U.S. Census-based computer model of 10,000 people, Bigazzi found that the ideal bicycling speed to inhale the minimum amount of pollution is between 7.5 to 12.5 miles per hour (mph), placing the lowest risk for women at nearly eight mph and for men at just over eight mph. “The faster you move, the harder you breathe and the more pollution you could potentially inhale, but you are also exposed to traffic for a shorter period of time. This analysis shows where the sweet spot is,” says Bigazzi.
Prenatal Omega-3 Reduces Kids’ Asthma Risk
R
esearchers from the Copenhagen University Hospital, in Denmark, discovered expectant mothers that take omega-3 supplements while pregnant reduce the risk that their babies will develop asthma. Analyzing blood samples from 695 Danish women at 24 weeks of gestation and again one week after birth, the study tested the levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—longchain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, fish oil and DHA-algae supplements—in the women’s blood. The health of the babies was monitored for five years and compared with the blood analysis. The children of the mothers given 2.4 grams of long-chain omega-3 supplements during their third trimester displayed an overall 31 percent reduced risk of developing asthma. “Asthma and wheezing disorders have more than doubled in Western countries in recent decades,” explains Professor Hans Bisgaard, of the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood at the hospital. “We now have a preventative measure to help bring those numbers down.”

Latin American Tree Bark Improves Diabetes Markers
study from the University of Prague, in the Czech Republic, has found that extracts from the bark of the Hintonia latiflora, a tree grown in Mexico and South America, can help regulate blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Researchers administered a capsule containing a dry concentrated extract from the plant to 32 subjects with the condition and monitored their blood glucose levels for six months. The subjects experienced an 11 percent decrease in glycated hemoglobin, an indicator that the body can better regulate blood glucose levels during the period, as well as a slight reduction in cholesterol and triglycerides. The researchers also found the natural treatment resulted in a 25 percent reduction in fasting blood glucose levels and a 22 percent reduction in post-meal glucose levels. Liver enzymes showed improved levels in the subjects, as well. No adverse side effects were observed.

Negative Stereotypes Sabotage Girl Soccer Players
~ Wayne Dyer
esearchers from Germany’s Goethe University, in Frankfurt, sought to determine the impact that the belief held by some that females are poor soccer players would have on their performance. The study had 36 teenage female soccer players engage in a ball-dribbling drill before and after reading a pertinent article. Half of the subjects read about the perceived incompetence of female soccer players and the other half read a piece about the growing popularity of the sport. The players that read the negative article needed significantly more time to complete the drill than those that read the positive article, possibly highlighting the impact that negative stereotyping has on women.

Safe Harbor
The French government has expanded the Réserve Naturelle Nationale des Terres Australes Françaises, a highly protected marine reserve in Frenchcontrolled, sub-Antarctic waters of the southern Indian Ocean, from about 8,000 to more than 46,000 square miles; it now includes seven areas surrounding the islands of Crozet and Kerguelen. France intends to designate 10 percent of its oceanic territory by 2020, and this action brings the total as of the end of 2016 to 1.3 percent. These large-scale, fully protected marine reserves may serve as climate refuges for many species. The rich biodiversity of the new addition includes marine mammals, fish, seabirds, orcas, penguins, Antarctic fur seals and the critically endangered Amsterdam albatross.
Turtle Turnaround
Record Hatchlings Give Hope Worldwide, six of the seven sea turtle species are threatened or endangered because of human activity. A ray of hope now shining from conservation efforts is that nesting sea turtles have posted record numbers of successful hatchlings in South Carolina the last three years, with Georgia and Florida reporting similar results. Decades of helpful efforts are paying off due to increased public awareness of turtlefriendly practices at seaside locations. Heed these rules:

Cycling Chicago
Pioneering Bike Paths Promise Easy Commutes Chicago has created 100 miles of new bike lanes in the last five years and plans to add another 50 miles of upgraded lanes with curbs to protect riders from cars by 2019. Beyond that, a series of floating, solar-powered bike paths along the edge of the Chicago River is on the drawing board; each mile of pathway may cost between $5 million and $10 million. The architecture firm SecondShore first proposed the idea. “You look at the river, and while it used to be the main commercial artery in the city, it’s not much of one anymore,” says firm cofounder James Chuck. “This fits with the mayor’s general economic strategy for the city—how to make use of latent infrastructure.” The floating bike paths, named RiverRide, would give pedalers a truly autofree place to ride for part of their commute and connect with existing bike lanes. The system would fill gaps in the network, creating around a 17-mile stretch of continuous bike paths connecting 28 neighborhoods. Floating on concrete pontoons, the paths would use solar power for lighting. Solar panels could also heat the surface so the path doesn’t ice up in winter. Plans call for the path to intersect with river bridges so bikers can cross to the other side. 12

Balloon Doom
Helium-filled balloons look pretty when released at special events, but they eventually become earthbound trash littering land and water, often traveling great distances before reaching their final resting places; spans of up to 1,300 miles have been recorded. The Ocean Conservancy recently picked up nearly 94,000 balloon remnants in the course of a year’s worth of cleanup operations. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, fish, dolphins, whales, seabirds and sea turtles have all been found with latex balloons in their stomachs, blocking their digestive tracts. One study of two stranded sperm whales in California attributed their deaths to huge amounts of consumed ocean debris. Another found that more than half of one species of sea turtle surveyed had trash in their gut; mostly balloons. The problem is so serious that several states and cities have already outlawed mass balloon releases. Latex balloons are technically biodegradable, but that process can take six months or more, according to the UK National Association of Balloon Artists and Suppliers. Celebratory alternatives include laser shows, music performances, bubbles, banners and reusable inflatable characters.

Choo Choo Breakthrough Wind-Powered Trains in Holland
Nederlandse Spoorwegen reports that all of its electric trains are now running on energy harvested from wind. Working with Eneco, a sustainable energy supplier in the Netherlands, the goal was to operate the trains via wind turbines by January 2018, but they beat their own deadline. Electric locomotives don’t use conventional engines; instead, they act like a component in an electric circuit transmitted via high-voltage power lines. Three options for usage include onboard energy storage systems such as batteries; an overhead wire; or an extra live rail, which has current flowing through it at all times. It’s used to power lights and air-conditioning, as well as for propulsion. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, turbines capable of generating 586 megawatts of electricity are the workhorses. In 2016, a 700 megawatt offshore wind farm near the town of Borssele became the most cost-effective of such installations in the world.

Designing Cabinets and Chairs Made from Recyclables Swedish design firm and retailer IKEA is introducing a new line of “no waste” products that includes seating, vases and kitchen cabinets made of recycled materials. IKEA hopes that the design will help people see waste not as garbage, but as just another material that can be used in creating new and beautiful things. The Kungsbacka kitchen employs affordable, sustainable supplies that look stylish, including cabinet doors incorporating recycled plastic bottles and recycled wood; the entire cabinet is said to be 99.9 percent recycled. The Odger chair is 70 percent recycled plastic and 30 percent renewable wood. The design, available in a range of colors and wood finishes, is the result of collaboration between Swedish designers at Form Us With Love and eschews the environmentharming plastics of other chairs. IKEA also melts recycled glass to turn it into beautiful vases. Each mouth-blown vase is unique, thanks to the materials.

New Seed-Sharing Law in California California is the fourth state to pass a law making it legal to swap seeds and collect them in non-commercial libraries. That’s good, because the U.S. Department of Agriculture Federal Seed Act, in place for 80 years, mandates that any activity involving non-commercial distribution of seeds must be labeled, permitted and tested according to industrial regulations that would be both costly and burdensome to the hundreds of local seed libraries operating in 46 states. Nebraska, Illinois and Minnesota also recently passed laws protecting noncommercial seed activity from regulatory requirements. Free seed libraries, swaps and exchanges increase access to local food and can play a large role in expanding and preserving biodiversity. Neil Thapar, the food and farm attorney at the Sustainable Economies Law Center, says, “We wanted to create the legal framework for an alternative system that is not reliant on large companies to provide open-pollinated seed varieties. Seed sharing has a direct connection to building local economic resilience.” The center is taking action to try to get laws changed in all 50 states.

“ To Know is to understand...”
Local governments and hotels are struggling to come to terms with the growing phenomenon of Airbnb room rentals, which help residents find short-term paying guests that often provide an economic lifeline to help them pay their bills, rent or mortgage. It’s an affordable, convenient and comfortable alternative for travelers. Critics claim the service removes affordable housing units and official hotel rooms from the market by turning suitable apartments into unofficial hotels. Consequently, proposed ordinances are in the works in several U.S. metropolitan areas where Airbnb entrepreneurs and industry groups are also active in trying to shape future laws. Other on-demand grassroots industries such as ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft, which have flourished in unregulated “gray areas”, have learned they need to employ teams of lawyers and lobbyists to fight a stream of restrictive laws and lawsuits.

Greener Diapers
Cloth Better than Disposable for People and the Planet Disposable diapers are the third most common consumer item in landfills. When even those labeled “eco-friendly” are covered by other debris after being discarded and hidden from sunlight and air, they don’t readily biodegrade. Producing disposables also makes major demands on water, energy, nonrenewable resources like oil and renewables like wood. Many brands contain harmful ingredients such as polyacrylate, dioxin, phthalates and heavy metals that can be absorbed by a baby’s soft, developing skin and promote rashes. According to SmallFootprintFamily.com, 90 to 95 percent of American babies annually generate 27.4 billion single-use plastic diapers, or 7.6 billion pounds of garbage. While comparable statistics on adult diapers aren’t available, Euromonitor International forecasts a 48 percent increase in U.S. sales to $2.7 billion in 2020, up from $1.8 billion in 2015. In a decade, sales of diapers for adults could surpass those for babies at Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble, attributed to bladder control issues related to health and age, according to the Urology Care Foundation and Mayo Clinic. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association advise that in all cases, fecal matter and urine should be rinsed and flushed down the toilet instead of put in the trash, so that contaminants don’t enter groundwater and potentially spread disease. Traditional cloth diapers are the way to go for several reasons beyond budget:

4 Using cloth facilitates earlier potty education by quickly communicating to the baby when they are wet. New cloth diaper systems like Nicki’s Diapers (NickisDiapers.com) can be easily cleaned in regular and high-efficiency washing machines. Some popular brands are listed at DiaperPin.com. 4 The nonprofit association at RealDiapers.org helps connect local groups of mothers to communicate and share best practices in use, cleaning and potty training, such as learning a baby’s cues for needing to go. It also hosts informative events such as the annual national Great Cloth Diaper Change. 4 Cloth diapers in good condition can be resold on eBay and sites like DiaperSwappers.com.

Milk Minus the Moo
Evaluating Alternatives to Dairy by Judith Fertig
W
hen dietary concerns, food sensitivities or curiosity prompt us to try alternative milks, it helps to know the basic facts about the leading types, to choose the best ones for us.
Almond Milk
Pro: Almond milk is low in fat and can be easily made at home, so ingredients are known. One cup of homemade almond milk has about 40 calories, one gram of protein, 6 percent of the daily value (DV) for calcium, three grams of fat and eight grams of carbohydrates. As for storebought options, one cup of Silk Organic Almond Original contains 60 calories, with one gram of protein, 10 percent DV for calcium, two-and-a-half grams of fat and eight grams of carbohydrates. Con: Almond milk is neither high in protein nor calcium; it’s not as nutritionally packed as other alternatives. Some might not care for the faint nutty flavor.

Coconut Milk
Pro: Dr. Josh Axe, a functional medicine physician who owns the popular natural health website, DrAxe.com, and the Exodus Health Center, near Nashville, Tennessee, points out, “High in mediumchain triglycerides, coconut milk is a very filling, fat-burning food.” One cup of homemade coconut milk has about

450 calories, six grams of protein and 64 grams of fat, plus trace minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and copper. Canned coconut milk is similar: one cup of Native Forest Unsweetened Coconut Milk Classic contains 420 calories, three grams of protein and 45 grams of fat, plus trace minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and copper in each cup. Con: High in fat and calories, coconut milk may not be the best choice for drinking every day, but is delicious in Asian-style soups and curries.
Hemp Milk
Pro: Hemp milk, made from hulled hemp seeds, contains 10 essential amino acids, including key fats. “Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are vital for healthy functioning of the brain,” says Axe. Hemp milk works well for people with tree nut allergies. One cup of Pacific Hemp Original has 140 calories, three grams of protein, 50 percent DV for calcium, five grams of fat and 20 grams of carbohydrates. Living Harvest Tempt Hemp Milk has 80 calories per cup, two grams of protein, 30 percent DV for calcium, eight grams of fat and one gram of carbohydrates. Con: Grassy-tasting hemp milk tends to separate in hot coffee.
Rice Milk
Pro: High in vitamins and calcium when fortified, rice milk made from brown rice is also high in vitamins. According to Ted Kallmyer, author of Flexible Dieting, in Bend, Oregon, rice milk is the least likely alternative milk to trigger an allergy. One cup of Pacific Rice Milk has 130 calories, one gram of protein, 30 percent DV for calcium, two grams of fat and 37 grams of carbohydrates. One cup of Rice Dream Organic Rice Drink has 120 calories, one gram of protein, 30 percent DV for calcium, 2.5 grams of fat and 23 grams of carbohydrates. Con: Low in fat and protein, it’s also relatively high in carbohydrates. It has a less creamy texture than hemp, coconut or soy milks.
Soy Milk
Pro: Soy milk provides more protein than other alternative milks. Look for a calcium-fortified, organic brand that doesn’t contain the thickening agent carrageenan, suggests Dr. Andrew Weil, founding director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, in Tucson. Different brands have different nutritional components. For example, one cup of Organic Valley Soy Original has 100 calories per cup, with seven grams of protein, 30 percent DV for calcium, three grams of fat and 11 grams of carbohydrates. One cup of Organic EdenSoy Extra Original Soymilk contains 130 calories, with 11 grams of protein, 20 percent DV for calcium, four grams of fat and 13 grams of carbohydrates. Con: Some people might not like the thick texture and soy aftertaste. Dr. Frank Lipman, founder and director of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, in New York City, says that limiting soy is a good idea due to soy’s prevalent pesticide saturation and its researched links to thyroid, endocrine system and sex hormone dysfunction (Tinyurl.com/SoyDarksideStudies). If soy is eaten, “Choose certified organic, soy products—preferably fermented versions like miso, natto and tempeh—with the Non-GMO Project seal; and do so sparingly, no more than twice a week,” advises Lipman.

BUY FRESH DIRECT FROM PRODUCERS At Shelton CT Farmers Market by Lisa Cheney
N
ot the usual Connecticut Farmers Market, all produce and products at the Shelton CT Farmers’ Market, located at 100 Canal Street in Shelton, are grown, raised or created by the farmers and artisans at the market. The market is managed by an association of farmers, artisans and citizens that are involved as board of director members, market masters, marketing committee members and members-at-large. The market’s mission is to provide fresh local foods and artisanal products to its members and customers in an environmentally, economically sustainable fashion while still maintaining its integrity as a producer-only venue. The market has a long history in Shelton, dating back to its creation in 1993 by a local farmer, Guy Beardsley, on a barren dirt field on Canal Street. In 1997, the town of Shelton acquired the land on which the farmers’ market building now stands. It was part of the city’s revitalization plan, which called for the cleanup and restoration of targeted brownfields to provide new open space, commerce and housing. It was then determined that a farmers’ market would be a viable and appropriate reuse for this property.

The heated building, erected in 2005, includes restrooms, storage space for the market, seven automated “garage doors” for easy access for loading and unloading, indoor and outdoor lighting, electricity, and space for as many as 50 vendors indoors and outdoors. The building has a paved courtyard surrounding it and ample free parking. It is adjacent to the Shelton Riverwalk and Veteran’s Memorial Park. In 2015, then market master, Guy Beardsley, stepped down after 22 years of running the successful market. A new association was developed and Stacia Monahan, another local farmer, stepped in to head up the market’s board of directors. The 2017 season will begin on May 6; the market will be open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. weekly until Thanksgiving. In June, the market will be open on Wednesday afternoons as well from 3 to 6:30 p.m. until the end of October. This year brings the possibility of an additional market day during the week in Huntington Center. The market offers a market membership for a donation of $25. This will enable the market association to continue to
grow the market, to provide community outreach speakers and workshops, to provide live music at every market and to offer special events for the community. Members will receive a membership card, market tote and special offers from all vendors at the Saturday markets from May to Thanksgiving. The market accepts cash, credit and debit, SNAP, EBT and Farmers Market WIC FMNP. In addition, the market is launching a new The Valley Sprouts children’s club this year at the Shelton CT Farmers Market. The cost to families will be $10 for the first child and $5 per sibling thereafter. The Valley Sprouts tent will be open each Saturday. Once a month in June, July, August and September, there will be two-hour Saturday special events. These will include yoga; music sessions; and agricultural

eaching me how to steer the 30-foot-long sailboat he built, my father would say, “It’s the sail that follows the wind, and the rudder that follows the sail.” The sail, by its nature, will catch the wind and lean into it. The rudder is for steering once we’ve set sail. Our soul is like a sail. Once hoisted, it’s filled by the wind of Spirit, which establishes our course and direction. Our will is our rudder; its job is to follow where the soul filled with Spirit leads, helping to steer our way. When we lean on will to make things happen, we can grow stubborn, confused or lost. Clear sailing comes when we’re being carried toward a vision greater than our self, feeling wholly alive along the way. Scudding along the sea, my father was living once for all time, feeling the sensation of all life in that moment. We all yearn to live in these moments forever, yet even a taste of aliveness can fill, sustain and refresh us in the midst of daily tasks. We all face times beyond our control when life doesn’t follow our designs and we’re asked to work with life and not fight, curse or hide from it. When insisting on our way, we can get so tangled in our will that we can’t find or feel the wind of Spirit. During these times—when we fear there is no meaning and it seems there’s nothing holding us up—our will can puff, snap and flap

about in a desperate attempt to fill what looms as an empty life. But even setting out on the sea, it’s never easy. My father remarked, “It’s always harder to sail toward a fixed point, because you will inevitably have to cross the wind several times to get there.” By contrast, a boat moves its fastest and cleanest when it simply follows the wind. It’s the same when we listen for where life is taking us, instead of busily thinking about where we’re going. Devoting ourselves to experiencing the journey, rather than determining a destination, we discover our way. Like a sail, our life must be out in the open before the wind will show its face. Likewise, Spirit fills us when we can inhabit our true nature. We miss what awaits us if we hover too close to the shore of our past, our family, someone else’s dream for us, or an old identity. To feel the wind in our face, we must leave the shallows and harbors for the deep. Only then will the larger, timeless destination show itself and our soul be filled enough with Spirit that our smaller self will have no choice but to engage in steering us toward all that matters. You Can Be RIGHT ... or You Can Be HAPPY by Dr. Henry Grayson
A
s adults, we need the ability to step back when we are experiencing an angry outburst from someone in order to observe the person and the situation. But this can be quite difficult as many of us have a need to “win” an argument. This façade of triumph over another and the need to be “right” can prolong an unpleasant situation. It is, therefore, imperative to train ourselves to not add “fuel to the fire” by participating and instead diffuse the situation with observation. This is not easy and it takes practice. When an argument with someone has turned into a heated discussion with what appears to be no end in sight, it is the perfect time to look at the situation in a new way; this is called a perceptual shift. 22
New Haven / Middlesex
As we notice our faces become red, voices rise, and stress levels elevate, we need to shift our perception from our being a victim to focusing on the other person as being frightened. Once we are able to look beyond their behavior and focus on the fear that resides just below the surface of the turmoil, it may be easier to respond to the other person with kindness instead of anger and disapproval. Often times, the other person will accuse us of trying to manipulate them as our tone softens. Although they may question our sincerity, we should not let this deter our loving behavior. It is all the more reason to stick to our plan to extend love and express compassion. This process may take some time before the other begins to understand that we
NaturalNewHaven.com
have an interest in eradicating the painful experience of the argument for both of us.
Kill Fear with Kindness
Often mistrustful people will react in a negative manner to the kindness and become suspicious of our intentions. People have a difficult time processing the fact that they actually have a choice between happiness and misery. If this continues to happen—despite our efforts to stop the stress—we may need to evaluate whether or not this is an appropriate relationship for us. Both people need to respond in kind. Sometimes our efforts will show us the other’s person desire to remain in pain and cling to their suffering. By seeing the fear, we can let go of
Often mistrustful people will react in a negative manner to kindness and become suspicious of our intentions. People have a difficult time processing the fact that they actually have a choice between happiness and misery. our own fears in dealing with such a difficult situation. Seeing the other person differently also allows us to create different feelings, which, in turn, bring different ways of behaving towards them and cumulatively begins to heal the other’s fears of further hurts. As our false perceptions heal, the other person also heals.
Perceptions Rule the World
If we view others as capable, we will deal with them differently and they will behave differently. People with angry outbursts—and even violent behavior problems—should be regarded as frightened and appealing for help and love. With this perception, we are all less likely to participate in the battle that stands before us. Instead of feeling like the other person requires control and judgment, view them as needing our love and help. Someone’s whole world can change as a result of how we perceive them; that is why perception is such a powerful force. How is it our perceptions of others and situations have such an influence on our experience of them? Projection makes perception. Quite simply, this means that the thoughts and beliefs inside of us are projected, coloring our perception of the outside world, its events and our relationships in it. It is not what another person says or does, nor the events of life that make us happy or unhappy, but rather what we think about that person’s behavior or those events.
What we Believe We Perceive!
If it is our perceptions that bring our pain and suffering, then how can we change them? How can we move from a powerless position—in which we feel like a victim at the mercy of the people in our lives—to an empowered and happy one where we take responsibility for our thoughts and behaviors, and choose to extend love? How do we accomplish this task without having to wait for another person or the world to change? A perceptual shift is choosing to see someone or a situation differently. It is seeing through the behavior presented to us that appears attacking, rejecting or depriving. It is looking with an X-ray vision to see that the undesirable behavior is only a person who is not having access to their true self.
An Exercise to Change your Perception
When a person is behaving toward us in a way we do not like, we can simply ask ourselves, “Is it love coming from this person?” If the answer is no, then we can assume that this person may be afraid and appealing for love. Instead of viewing this person then as an “ogre”, we can see them as a scared child hiding behind a paper tiger and who desperately wants love. In fact, the more ferocious sounding the tiger, the greater the fear and desperation for love. In moments of crises, there seem to be two categories of people: those who are able to extend love and those appealing for love out of fear. All of us vacillate between the two categories. Both, however, provide opportunities to get in touch instantly with empowering love. When we are in a state of loving, we are manifesting our true self essence, which is love and our divine nature. When someone is extending love, we can be in touch with love just by opening our hearts to receiving it.

HEALTHY MIND LIGHTER BODY
Losing Weight Involves Body, Mind and Emotions by Angela Pascopella
A
To explain this, many experts point to the explosion of processed foods lining about 62 percent of most grocery store shelves. It makes sense since more than 80 percent of calories consumed from grocery stores in 2012 were from ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat food items. While the idea of keeping a healthy diet and/or losing weight has consumed many Americans for decades, new information is leading us to understand that our physical weight is tied to thoughts, emotions or possible past traumas and, ultimately, is less about the food we eat than most

mericans have a cultural obsession with weight and weight loss. This is evidenced today by the growing annual revenue of the U.S. weight-loss industry, which at this time is approximately $20 billion including diet books, diet drugs and weight-loss surgeries. The obsession has gone high tech as more gadgets—such as GoFit and Polar bracelets— now keep track of calories consumed, daily steps and heart rate. Despite all this, obesity and diabetes are still on the rise nationwide. Nearly 37 percent of U.S. adults have some level of obesity, according to 2014 statistics available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, which are named as some of the leading causes of preventable death. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was an astonishing $147 billion in 2008.

sugar,” she says. “And chemically, your brain learned it will help you feel better if you just eat a cookie or have a piece of bread. Then it becomes a habit or addiction. And you feel awful.” Bahr-Groth also uses kinesthesiology (also known as applied kinesiology) as a “human lie detector” test. When people are forced to lie, they become weak and can’t hold the same strength, so she’s able to push their arm down. “I have people think about losing weight. And that weakens their energy and that releases anxiety, because they have learned that they feel better by eating chips and pizza; if you’re taking that food away, that will create more stress.” If someone doesn’t want to give up bad foods consciously, Bahr-Groth suggests she probably cannot help. “They may have an unconscious desire to sabotage that we can help with but they need to want to change something or improve something in order for any change to happen,” she says. For those who want to break the pattern, she uses Thought Field (TF) therapy, discovered by psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan of Westport. Bahr-Groth says she can help clear mental and physical ailments using “tapping”. It’s the act of tapping fingers at meridian points on certain parts of the body and hands, where she can sense which areas are undercharged or overcharged; this means where blocked or negative feelings or beliefs are stored, preventing someone from being free of unwanted behaviors or responses. At some point, she asks which emotion is the root cause of the weight problem, and then discovers the age and circumstances surrounding the issue. “It’s usually related to a past traumatic moment which causes an unwanted emotion, response or behavior,” Bahr-Groth explains. Hypnotist Joann Dunsing of Milford also uses a tapping therapy, called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is like acupuncture without the needles. It “clears up the negative energy and thought processes” clogging the body. Dunsing adds that diets don’t work because they deprive the body. Some people might want to hold onto weight after they marry because they don’t want to be sexually attractive to others; they may be using the weight as a safety mechanism. One type of hypnosis is a virtual gastric band program; people are hypnotized to feel as if they physically had surgery to shrink their stomachs, but nothing changed in their bodies. Their minds changed, Bahr-Groth says. Christina Surtees, an eating psychology coach and owner of GenuinelyNourished.com, says the time in which someone eats is almost more indicative than what someone is eating. She points out the difference between eating during holidays and during the typical work week. More people can “get away with” actions—like drinking more and not feel badly afterward or eating more sweets during holidays— when they are relaxed. But during “normal life”, when most people are more stressed, the body often shifts from optimum digestion to being in a stress or “fight or flight” response; this reaction comes from man’s early days of existence when the body would shut down digestion if predators such as lions are literally chasing them. Surtees first asks her clients questions about relationships, 26

work life, and if someone is happy. “What I’m looking for is their routine—are they happy? Are they skipping meals and eating a lot at dinner? Or are they coffee junkies?” Coffee isn’t necessarily bad, but it is a “powerful substance” that has different effects on different people, Surtees says. Some might thrive on it, or some get agitated or jittery after a cup or two; the latter is the body trying to say it’s bad for them. She associates ingesting too much coffee and sugar with “being whipped”, or feeling extremely tired and lethargic. In addition, medications can sometimes have the side effect of draining our energy. Surtees will look up the side effects of a medication after a session to consider if that might cause energy loss in someone. Or someone might be seeing various doctors who prescribe different medications, and they don’t interact well with each other, thereby triggering energy loss. Having lived in Switzerland for years, Surtees realized how most Swiss ate whole foods, mainly because processed foods weren’t sold at local markets. “In Europe, people like food and enjoy their meals,” she says. “Here, we have an ambivalent relationship to food. And a lot of people worry about the last five pounds they want to lose. But then they have to face the fact that their marriage isn’t so great, or their job stinks, or they have kids that are draining them.” And it’s always socially acceptable to talk about weight and dieting. “They see food as the enemy and every time they eat it’s a battle,” Surtees says. “That’s tiring for them. But they also know its nourishing.” Dunsing concludes that the most important element to remember is that it’s not about the food. “We have to change the programs that we have running in our heads,” she says. “Being able to love and accept yourself, just the way you are, is so important. It lightens your load, literally.” Angela Pascopella is a 26-year journalism veteran and frequent contributor to Natural Awakenings. WHY ARE WE SO TIRED? Stressed Adrenals May Be the Culprit by Dr. Nina Manipon
W
e lead busy lives juggling between family responsibilities, job demands, emails, social media and a constant “to do list”. Add trouble sleeping at night and we wind up in a vicious cycle of being tired and wired. Many of us expend more energy than we have and rely on coffee, energy drinks and bars, or a sugary treat to keep us awake and alert. Being in overdrive all the time negatively affects our mental, emotional and physical health. Our bodies constantly adapt and adjust to stress, which is a normal and healthy process. The issue is when we are constantly exposed to stress and unable to manage it, putting strain on our whole system, especially our adrenal glands. The adrenals are vital to our wellbeing. They have an important role in producing hormones that are neces-

sary during times of stress. The adrenal glands are tiny pyramids about the shape of a walnut that sit on top of the kidneys. These glands produce neurotransmitters such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, hormones that regulate our metabolism and how we adapt to stress by producing cortisol. The adrenal glands also regulate blood sugar, affect our cardiovascular system by controlling blood pressure, and have an effect on our immune health. When we are stressed, the brain communicates to the pituitary gland to release a hormone called ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone). ACTH then acts on the adrenals to release cortisol. There are three stages of the stress response: alarm phase (acute stress), resistance phase (chronic stress) and exhaustion phase (burnout). The alarm phase is also known as the “fight

symptoms of adrenal fatigue include lack of energy—such as morning fatigue or mid-afternoon slump— trouble sleeping, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, difficulty concentrating, consistently feeling sick, weight gain and mild depression. There are several ways to measure cortisol levels. This can be done through saliva, blood and urine. Salivary cortisol can be taken four times during a 24-hour period (morning, noon, afternoon and midnight) to find the cortisol rhythm. Blood draws are collected two times in one day at 8am and 4pm. Cortisol levels are highest in the morning before waking up and gradually decrease throughout the day. The thyroid gland and adrenals work closely together and checking thyroid function is also helpful.

or flight” response where cortisol levels rise quickly. For example, if a bear is coming towards us, our heart immediately races and our eyes grow wider; we start to run away because cortisol and epinephrine are released. If the stress is applied over a long period of time, the alarm phase plateaus; this is called the resistance phase. In the resistance phase, levels of cortisol and epinephrine stay elevated, which results in weight gain, an increased risk of infections, and can lead to depression and high blood pressure. If chronic stress is not resolved, this can lead to the exhaustion phase with the adrenals unable to keep up. The exhaustion phase gives rise to conditions such as low blood sugar, hypothyroidism, low motivation and anxiety. Adrenal fatigue is the suboptimal functioning of the adrenal gland. Adrenal fatigue is the suboptimal functioning of the adrenal gland. When the body is under stress, a number of hormones are secreted; if the stress becomes too severe, the adrenals cannot respond the way they need to. If tests show signs of low adrenal function, here some are ways to boost the adrenals for healthy functioning: n Eat a clean diet with good quality proteins and oils, vegetables and fruits. Organic foods, when available and affordable, are also helpful. n Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugars and alcohol. n Exercise daily to keep energy levels up or stress reduction methods through yoga, meditation and deep breathing. n Get adequate sleep and exercise proper sleep hygiene (i.e., shut down electronics such as televisions, smartphones and laptops) two hours before bed and get to sleep by 10pm each night. n Adaptogenic herbs, such as ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, and rhodiola, can help a body respond to stress. n B vitamins can help with energy production. n Acupuncture can be beneficial in calming the mind and stimulating key energy areas. Foods, Herbs and Nutrients for the Prevention of
BRCA Mutation Cancers by Dr. Sara B. Frawley
T
here has been a lot of recent publicity on certain celebrities with a BReast CAncer susceptibility gene mutation, also known as BRCA. But most people are unaware of how this gene can make us more susceptible to cancer and how certain diets and nutrients have been shown to help prevent many types of cancer. With the integration of modern medicine and key components of naturopathic medicine, the diagnosis of a BRCA gene mutation is no longer as detrimental as it once was considered to be; women at high risk for breast cancer can now live full, healthy lives. It is common knowledge that what we eat affects our health later in life. 30
New Haven / Middlesex
But research has shown, across various cultures and lifestyles, that women can take more control of their lives and health through the intake of identified foods, herbs and minerals most helpful to our gender.
The Science: BRCA1 and BRCA2 Gene Mutations Explained
Only 5-10 percent of all cases of breast cancer are actually hereditary through a gene mutation. BRCA is a tumor suppressor gene which, when “turned off” or stops working by a mutation, lacks the ability to destroy cancerous cells. A mutation in these genes makes us more susceptible to
NaturalNewHaven.com
breast cancer, as well as to ovarian, pancreatic, fallopian and peroneal cancer in women, and pancreatic and prostatic cancer in men. Depending on whether the BRCA1 or the BRCA2 gene is mutated and “turned off,” the risk factors and timelines of the predisposed cancers change. A BRCA1 mutation-related cancer often appears earlier in life. A BRCA2 mutation-related cancer is associated with a higher risk of premenopausal breast cancer but often presents later in life. Thanks to modern medicine and Mother Nature, there are ways to activate the BRCA gene, stimulating its ability to destroy cancer cells. In
recent years, a concept called “PARPBRCA synthetic lethality” has been researched. By stopping the PARP-1 gene and its ability to repair, cancerous cells with BRCA-mutated genes can be eradicated. Inhibiting PARP-1 is another way to prevent cancer in women, or men, with a BRCA gene mutation.

Key Nutrients: Herbs and Foods That Can Help
Wogonin is a constituent found in the plant Scutellaria baicalensis (common name Chinese Skullcap). Wogonin was shown to stop cancer cell growth and to stimulate cell death in both BRCA1 and BRCA2 forms of breast cancer. It can slow down the body’s response to estrogen, which results in reduced cellular reproduction of the breast cancer cells. This action makes Chinese Skullcap an excellent herb in the prevention of breast cancer. Small amounts of Genistein, a derivative of soy, has been shown to stimulate both the BRCA1 and the BRCA2 genes. This leads to an enhancement in the suppression of tumor formation. While most of the studies conducted on soy have been done on a cellular level and not on people, intake of foods high in isoflavones have been hypothesized to be the reason for the lower breast cancer incidence in Japanese women who have a high intake of soy foods like tofu. Indole-3-carbinol, a derivative of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, was also shown to work in a similar manner as soy as it can stimulate BRCA gene actions. Soy and indole3-carbinol were shown to work best in small amounts and to be more effective together than by themselves. How does tofu broccoli stir fry sound for dinner?
As discussed earlier, “PARP-BRCA synthetic lethality” would be another route to prevent cancer in people with a BRCA gene mutation. Nutrients that inhibit PARP-1 include L-carnosine, trehalose and curcumin. Carnosine is an amino acid found in red meat and darker fish like tuna. Trehalose, a disaccharide sugar, is most commonly found in mushrooms like the oyster mushroom. Curcumin is found in plants or herbs like turmeric. All of these have been isolated and manufactured into supplements to increase their strength and action effectiveness. While all these nutrients and herbs can help in the prevention of cancer, we should work with a naturopathic physician to create an individualized plan specific for us. A naturopath can show us a healthier, more positive path to living a long and happy life. began my personal training in the Non-Violent System (NVS) of self-defense with Grandmaster Verkerke in 1996,” says Eddie Rose, senior instructor of NVS Peace in the Midst of Non-Violence at Shangri-La Springs, in Bonita Springs, Florida. This aspect of the martial art form seicho jutsu was created by Canadian Daniel Verkerke, Ph.D., as a simple self-defense system to teach and perpetuate nonviolence; he continues to share it with the public, law enforcement, corporations and private security firms in the U.S. and internationally. Nonviolent self-defense is akin to the dynamics of bullfighting. “The matador never matches his strength with the enormous animal; rather, he redirects the energy of the bull with simple and precise movements—counterbalancing— and letting the bull’s energy move past him,” explains Rose. He’s trained everyday people of all ages and walks of life in this approach, in the U.S., UK, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. “As they train, students begin to feel more secure wherever they go, because they are learning how to be safe even in the midst of physical confrontation,” says Rose. “They wind up feeling more empowered as they learn how to neutralize aggression simply and effectively.” Practicing NVS increases balance, coordination, overall flexibility and joint mobility. Its soft, circular, martial arts movements, combined with slow-to-fast linear movements, also enhance cardiovascular health. “Mental and spiritual training includes the awareness and development of a state of being conscious of energy and mind. Everyone’s actions and reactions directly reflect the development of their mind,” says Rose.

Another nonviolent form of self-defense is Shaolin five animal kung fu, a martial arts style that mimics the characteristics of five animals—the tiger, leopard, snake, crane and dragon. Instructor Lloyd Fridenburg owns Fitness with a Purpose, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, where he emphasizes the awareness and avoidance concept as the psychological heart of nonviolent self-defense. Fridenburg, founder and senior instructor of the Waterloo Kung Fu Academy, explains, “The concept emphasizes being constantly aware of your surroundings while avoiding obvious areas of potential danger.” He also stresses the importance of proper body language—being able to read that of others, as well as how to diffuse confrontation upfront in how we present ourself. “Martial arts are a two-sided coin,” he says. “There’s the martial aspect, which involves techniques that allow a person to defend him- or herself in a wide range of situations. Then there’s the art aspect, which encompasses a deeper study, encompassing forms of movement and mental, philosophical and meditative techniques.” “Overall health benefits are no different than one might expect of any disciplined fitness regimen,” notes Fridenburg. “However, the nature of a quality martial arts program forces practitioners to focus their entire attention on what they are doing. The mere act of staying grounded in the present moment dramatically reduces stress and sets martial arts practices apart from many other forms of movement.” Tai chi, an ancient, softer style of Chinese martial art, leverages relaxation, posture and energy work, rather than muscular tension. As a Taoist art, it embodies the way nature works, using minimal effort to accomplish a lot. “Demonstrating tai chi as a form of nonviolent selfdefense is much easier than describing it,” says Aaron D. Nitzkin, Ph.D., of New Orleans, a Tulane University professor, tai chi master and certified medical qigong instructor. “If someone attacks, you don’t resist; you can use tai chi principles to yield to their movements with a natural, circular, continuous motion, turning their own force against them. When you move aggressively against a master, it feels like you’ve just bounced off them and fallen down. In order to win at tai chi fighting, you need to remain completely calm and centered and most of all, listen to your opponent’s energy with your hands, so that you can yield to it and then redirect it.” It’s a profound lesson in interpersonal communication. “My students report stronger immune systems, greater clarity of mind, better sleep, less anxiety and depression, and greater emotional stability,” says Nitzkin. “Practitioners become much more sensitive to and conscious of the internal condition of their bodies, and even develop the ability to feel bioelectric fields.” Whichever form of nonviolent self-defense suits us, experts advise that students study with a certified and experienced instructor for optimum results and safe practice.

he Heart to Lead: Women as Allies for the Greater Good, a documentary film directed and produced by Cheryl Gould, of Naples, Florida, explores the emerging paradigm of heart-based feminine leadership and how it is attuning women to their inner strengths, beliefs, each other and our Earth. “Women’s deeper unity of being is empowering them to take action and lead. Women who once longed for a culture that would reflect their highest priorities are now creating one in which they support each other and make a difference,” says Gould. She notes that for centuries, a vast number of women have led and served as change agents. “Unfortunately, the majority of them never made it into the headlines or history books. A prime example—few individuals knew that 12 women ran for president before Hillary Clinton.” In a recent Yes! magazine article, Rucha Chitnis reports that women are rising up to push back against growing corporate power, land grabs, economic injustice, climate change and more. Women’s groups and networks offer a paradigm shift, she concludes, exposing links between unbridled capitalism, violence, the erosion of human rights and destruction of the Earth.

A woman’s style of leadership in America’s corporate boardrooms, activist-led movements or state and federal government may not be plainly evident. Feminine wisdom’s emerging solutions are compassionate, collaborative and consensus-building, and pursue universal outcomes and group cooperation. They contrast with conventional competitive strategies and solutions, according to The Legislative Effectiveness of Women in Congress study at Vanderbilt University’s Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, in Nashville. Jean Shinoda Bolen, a medical doctor, Jungian analyst in Mill Valley, California, and author of Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman, has been advocating since 2002 for a United Nations Fifth World Conference on Women (5WCW). “Empowered and equal women are the key to peace and sustainability. We need to rise up together and fulfill the Dalai Lama’s words at the Vancouver Peace Summit: ‘It will be up to Western women to bring about peace.’” Bolen’s 5WCW vision joins millennial women worldwide now entering their era of activism with the feminist movement spearheaded by a boomer generation of women that’s forwarded the equality and empowerment of women this far. The Rabies Vaccine Dilemma Movement Seeks to Reduce Overdosing and Over-Vaccination by Dr. John Robb
T
here is a simple inexpensive blood test, called a titer, which indicates immunity against rabies, and veterinarians have known this for years. In many cases, such as my own, one rabies vaccine was given many years ago. When blood titers were recently checked-decades after that one administration of a rabies vaccine-my titers were still 10 times the protective level needed. Why does this matter? Because the rabies vaccine is the most toxic of all vaccines given to pets. Millions of pets have already died due to overdosing and over-vaccination from the rabies vaccine, and many have developed chronic disease following administration. Overdosing happens because the vaccine is dose-dependent: smaller pets require less volume to achieve immunity than larger pets. Yet state law says 36

the veterinarian must give the same dose to all size pets. Science has clearly shown that vaccine reactions go up as the pet’s weight goes down and the titer goes up as the pet’s weight goes down. So it’s clear we can produce immunity to rabies in smaller pets with a lower volume and yet the “bad” rabies law in Connecticut requires veterinarians to overdose the smaller pets mandating 1 cc volume to all pets regardless of size. It is over-vaccination because once a pet has established immunity measurable by a rabies blood titer, there is no need for a booster vaccine. However, the law as currently written requires the vaccine to be given every one or three years regardless if it’s medically warranted or not. Does that not seem like medical malpractice to inject a pet with a vaccine that has no medical value and can, in fact, potentially injure or kill the pet? The veterinarian, once edu-

cated, essentially must either live up to their Hippocratic Oath to do no harm or follow a law that potentially causes them to injure or kill their patient. That is the rabies dilemma. Five percent of dogs and 3 percent of cats are non-responders to the rabies vaccines. That means no matter how many rabies vaccines they are given, they don’t produce antibodies and will get rabies if exposed. When a blood titer is taken, the results are “0”, meaning no response to vaccination. Without the titer test currently being done, these pets are issued a rabies vaccine certificate, which gives a false sense of security to the pet owner and the community. When the pets get sick, rabies is not considered likely since they were previously vaccinated and whole families may actually be in danger.
Protect the Pets Movement
The good news is that there is a movement of people, under the name Protect the Pets, that is growing around the country and the world. This movement is composed of pet lovers—pet owners, veterinarians and legislators—who now better understand the science and are rapidly introducing legislation to amend the “bad rabies” law. Right now in the State of Connecticut, Proposed Bill No. 5659 is currently being debated by the Public Health Committee. Here is some information on the bill:
An Act Concerning the Vaccination of Animals
This bill proposes two things: that the general statutes be amended to allow the veterinarians to (1) vary vaccine dosage protocols when in the best interest and health of an animal, and (2) administer rabies antibody titer to determine the need for a rabies booster vaccine. Statement of Purpose: To allow veterinarians to make decisions that is in the best interest of an animal’s health and to prevent animals from being over-vaccinated. This is the time to take action in Connecticut. This bill will pass when pet lovers educate each other and contact their elected officials. The best way is an email giving legislators our phone numbers and asking them to call us. Another excellent opportunity is to see them in person when they have local town meetings asking input from their constituents. This amended rabies law is long overdue; this is an opportunity for Connecticut to make history by being the first state to amend it and protect lives of pets and the public by identifying non-responders. Now learn Tools to easily incorporate within your daily routine that calm and focus both adults and children. Call Today, to reserve your complimentary 30-min phone consultation. Services available remotely or in-person.
Applied Kinesiology is a neurological evaluation to find and treat dysfunction. Different because it addresses causes instead of chasing pains, Dr. Healy tests if a therapy alleviates dysfunction, finding immediate answers as to which provides the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. Generally, no single cure exists as disease and dysfunction typically involve multiple areas of the body. The goal of any therapy—physical, chemical, or emotional—is to improve function; a combination of therapies typically yields the best results. See ad on page 33.
