I love the beauty of autumn. By now, Natural Awakenings’ faithful readers are well aware of my penchant for color and nature and this season offers a rich array. Yet, this year, as the season transitions, the air turns colder and the leaves fall to the earth, I am also experiencing a sense of melancholy, especially given the recent death of my beloved cat, Guapo, my wonderful feline companion of 13 years. Despite that sadness, his passing was beautiful as we were able to be together, I was able to make him comfortable and he died peacefully. It felt sacred to witness such serenity. One focus for this month’s edition is energy and this experience further exemplified for me how everything is energy, whether it’s a human, a cat or a leaf. I know he is with me. I feel it. And when we do or receive energy work with positive intent, I truly believe we are helping heal ourselves, each other and the world. Another focus of this edition is environment. You’ll notice that from the news, health and global briefs to the articles and calendars in this issue, there are so many ways we affect and are affected by our environment (externally and internally). Some of the things you can learn about? How you can help Long Island Sound and Connecticut lands to be sustained for future generations… A link between childhood obesity and phthalates found in plastics… The ability to offset illness through foods, such as grapes or Dulse seaweed… Deforestation issues in Brazil, which affect us all… How we can take steps to avert the worst aspects of environmental decline… Finding inspiration by trekking in different areas of the world… Creating stronger communities through co-ops like Elm City Market... Check out Natural Awakenings’ advertisers, too, for a wealth of products and services to help you maintain a healthy environment in your body, mind, spirit, as well as your surrounding home, community, country and world… Also, be sure to check out this month’s Business Spotlight Article! No doubt you will recognize Physical Therapy (PT) Services of Guilford. Most people think of PT for post-surgery rehabilitation, but it can offer relief for so many issues. Meet Phyllis Quinn (whose mother, also named Phyllis Quinn, started the practice on the Shoreline nearly 40 years ago…) and learn about the multitude of ways physical therapy can be helpful to you for alleviating pain and dysfunction from injury, illness or otherwise. There is a saying that comes to mind for me today…”where attention goes, energy flows…” If everything is energy and it will move where you focus, what do you want to invite into your life and environment today? As I think of Guapo incarnate and continue feeling his presence, I hope you will join me in gratitude for each day’s opportunities and the loving connections in life. After all, “thanks for the blessing of you” is a good place to start…

newsbriefs Elm City Market: Building Community with Co-ops
C
o-ops do things differently. They’re people working together for better food, stronger communities and a healthier world. October is National Co-op Month and Elm City Market co-op in New Haven is offering an opportunity to learn more about cooperative businesses. During the first Friday each month, the businesses in downtown New Haven host a city-wide party (on9newhaven.com). On Friday, October 4 (6-8pm) will be Illuminate On9, an event with fun activities throughout downtown, and at which Elm City Market will illuminate the subject of co-ops. Everyone is welcome to wander the aisles for food samples by cooperatives and local vendors. Elm City Market sells a wide variety of organic, conventional and local foods, but really, it’s about people. Given the desire to offer greater access to fresh, healthy foods in downtown, citizens of New Haven rallied together to open Elm City Market in only 13 months. The co-op is coming up on their second anniversary. It opened with 756 member-owners and is now owned by over 2,050 people in the community. They sell products from over 200 local farmers, vendors and businesses. The co-op is located on Chapel and State Streets in a newly-built LEED Platinum building, along with Devil’s Gear Bike Shop and 360 State Street, a 32-story apartment community. Elm City Market is said to be “a market by the people for all people,” and everyone is invited to come experience it for themselves. Elm City Market’s location is 777 Chapel Street in New Haven CT, 203.624.0441, Elmcitymarket.coop. See back cover ad.
Walk Offers Hope for Huntington’s
I
t is estimated that there are tens of thousands of citizens with Huntington’s Disease (HD) in this country, with hundreds of thousands more at risk. HD is a hereditary degenerative brain disease involving slow and irreversible loss of mental and physical capacities, is fatal and currently has no cure (though Kundalini Yoga, T’ai Chi, holistic healing and supplements like fish oil, Creatine and CO-Q10 are said to help delay symptom onset). The Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA), a non-profit all-volunteer organization started by Marjorie Guthrie (wife of Woody Guthrie, who died from the disease), has chapters around the country working to improve the lives of everyone affected by HD through family services, education, advocacy and research. Its annual fundraiser, the Team Hope Walk, will take place locally at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison on Sunday, October 20. Registration opens at 9 a.m., with the walk at 10 a.m., plus music, raffles, lunch (donated by Tata’s chef/owner Efrain) and children’s activities. 100% of donations support the HDSA’s fight to improve the lives of all people affected by HD. Connecticut also has a separate state-funded clinic, the UCONN Health Center HD Program, where area HD patients can be treated (testing, social work, etc.) for free. HD support groups include a caregiver group at UCONN and three area HDSA meetings. For information, sponsorships, raffle/ auction item donations, or volunteering a healing modality (e.g.: massage), contact Susan McGann, President of HDSA’s Connecticut affiliate, at 860.558.8847, hdsa.org/ct. newsbriefs New Haven Abuzz with Spelling Bee Swarms
“C
ome find yourself in a swarm, spellbound, competing for a honey of a trophy!” Such is the invitation for public involvement in the New Haven Reads Spelling Bee, scheduled for Friday, October 25. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dodds Theater in New Haven. Teams comprised of three adults will compete in the Bee, a fundraiser supporting New Haven Reads’ literacy programs. Approximately seven teams comprise a “swarm.” Each word is announced, defined, and used in a sentence. Teams have 20 seconds to
write down their spelling. When the timing buzzer sounds, each team holds up its answer for the judges, remaining in the competition until a word is incorrectly spelled. When there is only one team standing, that swarm is over. The winners of each swarm then meet in a final round. Team registration is $225. Other ways to be involved include: sponsoring a team; being in the audience; placing a program ad; and, spreading word about the event. New Haven Reads was founded in 2001 by Chris Alexander as a free community book bank. Its mission is to share the joy and power of reading. New Haven Reads tutors over 500 children weekly at sites throughout New Haven, distributes over 100,000 free books annually, and provides workshops and activities to support families. Dodds Theater at the University of New Haven is located at 300 Orange Street in West Haven. For information, visit Newhavenreads.org

Toning with Tetu: Holographic Sound Healing Concerts
R
andeane Tetu uses voice toning and quartz crystal bowls to facilitate deep relaxation, stimulate the body’s natural healing ability and help participants come into resonance with the tonal memory of their own optimum health. According to Tetu, everything in and around the body resonates to sound, and sound is the primary mover for change. Because the human voice is a carrier wave for consciousness and intention, vocal toning and chanting are powerful sound vibrations for moving energy to facilitate change and healing. Vocal toning has been documented to help release emotions and physical pain, relieve stress, decrease tension, balance brain wave patterning, increase immune system response, and stimulate energy flow. Tetu offers holographic sound healing concerts throughout each month at Enchanted and Shoreline Center for Wholistic Health in Guilford, Avant Garde in Branford, Facilitated Healing Center in Cromwell, Meiklem Wellness Studio in Bozrah, and other locations, as well as private sessions by appointment (her current schedule is listed at Rowanlakepublishers.com). In a holographic sound healing concert, the vibrational tones of voice and crystal bowls, used with the intention of healing, help attendees release outworn patterning, balance their body’s energy centers and nourish optimum physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Randeane Tetu is a Holographic Sound Healing Master, Melchizedek Method Healing Master, Reiki Master, Karuna Master, Shamballah Master, and certified in Quantum Touch and Magnified Healing. She is reachable at 860.345.4226. Holographic Sound Healing, the Healing Art of the Hathors is authored and originated by Paul Hubbert, guided by the Hathors.
Citizens Saving the Sound
T
he natural resource of Long Island Sound provides recreational fun for all ages, habitat for wildlife, and income to many local economies. However, the Sound is heavily affected by the 20 million people who live within 50 miles of the coastline. Storm drains lead to Long Island Sound, so even the actions of those living at a distance affect its health. Current problems include water quality and pollution issues, diminished quality of tidal wetlands and other habitats which require restoration, and the need for more watershed management to protect local land and water. The Long Island Sound Study is a partnership of federal, state, and local government agencies, private organizations, and educational institutions working together to restore and protect Long Island Sound. Information on its website, Longislandsoundstudy.net, offers awareness of problems and solutions. The Sound is used for so many activities—boating, fishing, hiking, swimming, picnicking, observing nature—and each person can help ensure responsible sustainability for future generations to also be able to enjoy this natural resource. To that end, the site offers volunteer opportunities, as well as suggestions for individuals, such as conserving water (e.g.: use low-flow faucets, repair leaks, use dishwashers/clothes washers only when fully loaded, take short showers, etc.), recycling, properly disposing of electronics and any hazardous chemicals and conserving energy (e.g.: efficient lighting, home energy audits and unplugging electronics when not in use). It suggests using organic lawn care and sound-friendly landscaping techniques. To learn more and sign up for a free newsletter, visit Longislandsoundstudy.net.

Yoga Therapy & Five Healing Elements
F
or five Tuesdays in October, instructor Christine Ucich of SunDo Taoist Healing Arts will lead yoga therapy sessions for beginners or advanced students dealing with pain issues. This series will utilize mindfulness training in yoga and breathwork while examining the relationship between emotions and pain. The Five Element Yoga Therapy Healing System combines traditional yoga therapies of body awareness with Taoist practices that focus on the navel chakra, or Sea of Chi, in the lower abdomen. When tension or pain manifest in a part of the body, these are signals that the area needs care, attention and healing energy. Simple mindful awareness may bring relief, in addition to increased Qi energy flow cultivated through Taoist breathwork and gentle stretches for the body’s energy system, which affect the five-element meridians of water, wood, fire, metal and earth. Classes will happen every Tuesday from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at The Fitness Haven in New Haven. The Fitness Haven is reachable at 938 State Street in New Haven, CT, 203.562.2833. For directions and online registration, visit Thefitnesshaven.com.

Fresh, Fun and Local at Rose Orchards
S
ince the 1600’s the Rose family has farmed land on the Branford/Northford town line. Over the last hundred years the farm has alternated from an orchard, which was decimated during the Hurricane of ‘38, to a dairy farm, and back again to an orchard in the early 1970s. Their current offerings have been expanded to include a greenhouse filled with tomatoes, other vegetables, bedding plants, and hanging baskets. The Rose Farm is committed to providing good family fun in an outdoor setting complete with farm animals for the children to feed, a hay maze for children to play in, and a scenic hayride tour through a covered bridge and the woods for young and old alike. Produce includes peaches, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, squash, peppers, eggplant and broccoli. Pick Your Own is available for strawberries, apples, pears, and raspberries. The family makes and sells their own maple syrup, as well as pies, muffins and cookies in a multitude of flavors. Their Creamery has old fashioned custard (vanilla, chocolate, or a twist) as well as low-fat frozen yogurt in seasonal flavors with options for candy, toppings, and fresh fruit. Autumn opportunities include a corn maze, pumpkin patch and apple picking, plus the scenic wagon ride featuring Pumpkin Head. The farm

Council Conserves Connecticut’s Land
I
n order to sustain beautiful outdoor spaces for current and future generations, it is essential to find ways to conserve the land. Formed in 2006, The Connecticut Land Conservation Council is a coalition of land trusts, statewide conservation and advocacy organizations, town conservation and open space commissions, garden clubs and private individuals working together “to advocate for land preservation, stewardship and funding, and ensure the long term strength and viability of [Connecticut’s] land conservation community.” The Council provides technical assistance and referrals for land trusts (nonprofit, community-based organizations dedicated to the permanent protection and stewardship of land for public benefit) and other organizations on Connecticut-specific conservation topics. It also offers training and education, advocacy for critical issues (including at the state capitol), a source of conservation news and activity and a venue for bringing issues of importance to other conservation groups. The Council’s website is rich with information for anyone interested in area land conservation. Viewers can learn about conservation resources, find local land trusts, read how state and federal policy affect conservation in their communities, find workshops/classes, and discover ways to connect with others in the community. The site also includes listings around the state for events, such as the annual conference, Earth Day activities in spring, the October 19 Fall Foliage Walk (through Branford Land Trust), an Autumn Moonlight Walk on the Garvin Trail on October 13 and a Shepherd’s Trail Hike on Sunday, November 3 (through Madison Land Trust), and many more. Nutrition and Chiropractic Healing with Dr. Bob
D
r. Robert Skarzynski (aka: “Dr. Bob”) has been a practicing doctor of chiropractic in Guilford for over 25 years. He treats concerns such as back pain, disc or neck problems, headaches, plantar fasciitis, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome and more using services such as hands-on chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular re-education, electrical muscle stimulation, trigger point therapy and exercises. One newer component of his practice is Nutrition Response Testing, which is said to help resolve issues associated with weight, diabetes, digestive conditions, headaches, heart problems, depression, anxiety and more. Built upon Applied Kinesiology, Nutrition Response Testing is a non-invasive system of analyzing the body to determine root causes of ill health (e.g.: foods, chemicals, etc.). It involves a current health status assessment and “Personalized Natural Health Improvement Program.” The program aims to correct the cause of problems through natural nutritional means so the body regains the ability to heal itself. It includes nutrition education, as well as whole food supplementation (at the program’s start) and acupuncture for allergies, if needed. Dr. Bob graduated from New York Chiropractic College in 1986. He completed 400 hours of chiropractic orthopedics training and continues taking courses in chiropractic care. His education has also included a fellowship in acupuncture, graduation from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego’s whiplash and brain injury course, certification in Neuro-muscular Re-education, and Nutrition Response Testing course graduation. For information/appointments, or to invite Dr. Bob to give a presentation, contact 63 Church Street in Guilford, CT, 203.453.0232, ctshorelinenutritionresponsetesting.com. See ad on page 37.

Acupuncture’s Growing Acceptance
O
ne in 10 American adults has received acupuncture at least once and nearly half of them say they are “extremely” or “very” satisfied with their treatment, according to a survey sponsored by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Sixty percent of survey respondents readily accepted the idea of acupuncture as a treatment option, and 20 percent have used other forms of Oriental medicine, including herbs and Chinese bodywork. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day is observed on Oct. 24. For more information, visit aomday.org.
More Plastics, More Obese Kids
A
causal link between the worldwide epidemic of childhood obesity and phthalates commonly used in soft plastics, packaging and many personal care products is becoming more evident. A Korean study from Sanggye Paik Hospital at the Inje University College of Medicine, in Seoul, shows that the risk of childhood obesity increases with the level of DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) in the bloodstream. The study indicates that phthalates may change gene expression associated with fat metabolism. DEHP in particular is a suspected endocrine disruptor, or hormone-altering agent. Children with the highest DEHP levels were nearly five times more likely of being obese than children with the lowest levels. The scientists studied 204 children ages 6 to 13, of whom 105 were obese. A chemical commonly used to soften plastics, DEHP is found in some children’s toys, as well as myriad household items. Phthalates can be found in pacifiers, plastic food packaging, medical equipment and building materials like vinyl flooring. Personal care products such as soap, shampoo and nail polish may also contain phthalates.
Dulse Seaweed a Heart Health Powerhouse
D
ulse (palmaria palmata), a protein-rich red seaweed, could become a new protein source to compete with current protein crops like soybeans, according to scientists at Ireland’s Teagasc Food Research Centre. Dulse harvested from October to January usually has the highest protein content. This functional food also contributes levels of essential amino acids such as leucine, valine and methionine, similar to those contained in legumes like peas or beans. It may even help protect against cardiovascular disease. The Agriculture and Food Development Authority reports that for the first time, researchers have identified a renin-inhibitory peptide in dulse that helps to reduce high blood pressure, like ACE-1 inhibitors commonly used in drug therapy. 14

Grapes Grapple with Metabolic Syndrome
I
t’s high season for grapes, and consuming any variety of this sweet fruit—red, green or black— may help protect against organ damage associated with the progression of metabolic syndrome, according to new research presented at the 2013 Experimental Biology Conference, in Boston. Natural components in grapes, known as polyphenols, are thought to be responsible for this benefit. Metabolic syndrome comprises a cluster of conditions—increased blood pressure, high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels—that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Working with lab animals, researchers found that three months of a grape-enriched diet significantly reduced inflammatory markers throughout the body, most significantly in the liver and abdominal fat tissue. The diet also reduced the fat weight of the animals’ liver, kidneys and abdomen compared with those that were on a control diet. The grape intake also increased markers of antioxidant defense, particularly in the liver and kidneys. “Our study suggests that a grapeenriched diet may play a critical role in protecting against metabolic syndrome and the toll it takes on the body and its organs,” says lead investigator E. Mitchell Seymour, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan Health System. “Both inflammation and oxidative stress play a role in cardiovascular disease progression and organ dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes.”
Natural Eye Care for Aging Dogs
M
any owners of middle-aged and older dogs worry about their pets’ declining eyesight. Cloudy eyes are of particular concern, but that is not necessarily a sign that a dog is going blind, advises Shawn Messonnier, a doctor of veterinary medicine practicing in Plano, Texas. “While cataracts strike many older dogs, a more common condition is lenticular or nuclear sclerosis, a thickening of the lens of the eye,” says Messonnier. He explains that this normal change causes the eye to appear somewhat cloudy or gray, similar to a cataract. However, unlike a cataract, this type of sclerosis does not interfere with the pet’s vision. “Veterinarians can easily tell the difference between these conditions,” he says. “No treatment is necessary for lenticular sclerosis; cataracts are often treated with carnosine drops or with surgery.” For prevention, Messonnier suggests minimizing toxins that can cause inflammation throughout an animal’s body, not just the eyes. This means using blood titer testing instead of annual vaccinations, reducing the use of flea and tick chemicals, using natural pet foods and minimizing the use of conventional medications. He also recommends feeding a pet nutrients that contribute to health and reduce inflammation and cellular damage, including fish oil, probiotics and antioxidants like bilberry, which supports eye health.
Ease Sleep Apnea with Herbs
S
leep apnea is a serious health problem in which the sleeper can stop breathing as often as 30 times an hour. Conventional medicine says that apnea is caused by a sagging soft palate or some other obstructive tissue in the throat. Not so, says Master Herbalist Steven Frank, of Nature’s Rite, who believes that it is instead caused by a reduced signal from the brain to the diaphragm, prompting breathing to slow down or even causing the sleeper to stop breathing. “After a short period of time, the brain realizes the need to breathe and forces a rapid inhalation, dragging any sagging soft tissues into the airway and disturbing the sleep cycle,” he says, explaining such an obstruction as a consequence, rather than a cause. Conventional medicine usually addresses sleep apnea with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. Using such a device can be costly and cumbersome, as well as uncomfortable, creating its own form of sleep disruption. Frank suggests that a more natural solution to sleep apnea can be found by ingesting three simple herbs—lobelia, thyme and cramp bark. These work together to intensify the signal from the brain to the diaphragm, increasing lung efficiency, relaxing related skeletal muscles and so providing relief. Suffocating Earth
Accelerating Amazon Deforestation After more than six years of steady decline, the deforestation rate in the Brazilian Amazon, which serves as vital lungs for the planet, more than doubled in just six months this year, according to the nonprofit research institute Imazon. Observers blame the increase in part on Brazil’s weakened Forest Code, established to protect the rainforest by limiting how much land can be cleared and developed. Senior researcher Paulo Barreto explains, “Imazon uses satellite images to evaluate the deforestation monthly.” In May 2012, the Brazilian Congress changed the Legal Reserve rule that requires landowners to keep 80 percent of their property forested by eliminating mandatory fines as long as the land is reforested. But enforcement is difficult and the land is often used for growing cash crops such as soybeans or raising cattle. New guidelines also allow clear-cutting closer to riverbanks, and environmentalists are alarmed about threats to biodiversity. Additionally, 60 new dams are on the government’s agenda. Fossil-Fuel Freedom
New York State Could Achieve It by 2050 A new study lays out how New York State’s entire demand for end-use power could be provided by wind (50 percent), solar (38 percent) and geothermal (5 percent), plus wave and tidal energy sources. This ambitious goal could be achieved by 2050, when all conventional fossil fuel generation would be completely phased out. The plan also generates a large net increase in jobs. Mark Jacobson, a co-author of the study and professor of civil and environmental engineering at California’s Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, analyzes how energy technologies impact the atmosphere and how society can transition rapidly to clean and renewable energy sources if we integrate production and energy use in a systems perspective. Robert Howarth, Ph.D., the senior co-author and a professor of ecology and environmental biology at Cornell University, in New York, has been tackling climate change and its consequences since the 1970s. He says, “Many pundits tell us that solar, wind, etc., are great conceptually, but that it will take many decades to start to make these technologies economically feasible.” However, “New York is one of the larger economies in the world, and New York City is the most energyefficient city in the U.S.” NaturalNewHaven.com

by Nancy Cohen “Coming here was the best thing for me. I don’t know what I would have done without them. When I first came here I was on so many pain medications. Now I take only an occasional muscle relaxer. Here, they treat the soft tissue. With continued care here it’s improved. They’re the greatest. And, they really genuinely care about you.”

ational Physical Therapy Month is an annual commemoration held each October. Its intent is to “recognize the impact that physical therapists make in restoring and improving motion in people’s lives.” Physical therapists (PTs) are licensed health professionals who evaluate and treat pain, injury and dysfunction. They educate patients on the body’s biomechanics and provide non-invasive treatments enabling restoration of function, ease of movement, injury/disability prevention, and enhanced quality of life by working with the body’s natural ability to heal itself (without medication). 2014 will mark 40 years that the family-owned Physical Therapy Services of Guilford (located in Branford) has been 18

in business. Current owner Phyllis Quinn’s mother (also named Phyllis Quinn), started the business, which was the first private PT practice on the shoreline. She took over in 1994. Quinn and her staff (Janet Smith, PT, Faith Irwin, PT, David Nebiolo, DPT, Ally Hamrick, Jean Arthur and Lisa Egan) help treat issues in patients of all ages from babies to clients in their 90’s. Treatments can relieve: arthritis; back/knee/ neck/shoulder problems; carpal tunnel; headaches; sinus and ear pain; osteoporosis; sports injuries; and, more. Staff also treats issues one might not normally associate with PT healing. For example, women afraid to discuss incontinence, even with their doctor, will “suffer in silence.” Quinn helps patients to resolve this issue. With illnesses like Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis she says exercise is important for quality of life. Staff keeps patients functioning, especially when treatment is begun during the disease’s earlier stages. PT addresses balance issues, which could otherwise leave patients vulnerable to falls. It is an alternative for pregnant women who can’t take drugs and whose pelvis can shift and require realignment. Though the natural hormone, relaxin, opens the pelvis for delivery, it makes women vulnerable to injury, so PT alleviates potential problems. PT deals with the musculoskeletal system, “taking out the hindrances in the body and letting it do its thing.” For example, in a patient with pneumonia staff will find the side
of the lungs that’s not working well. Then, by getting the rib mechanics working better, they let the body heal itself. It is important for PTs to be sensitive to the way the body works in order to accurately identify issues and avoid further dysfunction/injury. Quinn and staff include gentle exercise, education and various techniques (such as muscle energy and myofascial) in their comprehensive, integrative care. They aim to help patients avoid surgery whenever possible. Each appointment involves 40 minutes of personalized one-on-one treatment with the PT. PT Services of Guilford
numerous conditions, including concussions, dizziness and sleep problems. For anyone troubled by foot pain, tingling or numbness (neuropathy, etc.), PT services of Guilford offers Anodyne Therapy for relief. This non-invasive, drug-free treatment is an infrared light therapy which stimulates the body to produce nitric oxide (increasing blood flow by dilating vessels). Treatments can help with both acute pain/injury and chronic illnesses like diabetes. Anodyne Therapy can reduce pain (hence pain medication use), improve circulation and re-establish sensation. When asked for basic advice, Quinn offers: 1. When you start to get better, don’t decide to wash the kitchen floor… 2. The body is logical. Pain may not be felt immediately, so when something bothers you, consider what you were doing 24 to 48 hours prior. 3. Keep moving. This doesn’t necessarily mean at the gym… even cooking, mowing the lawn and gardening help. 4. Exercise has multiple benefits. It helps with sleep, blood pressure, alleviating depression, reducing stress. “If they could find a drug that could do everything exercise does it would be a miracle drug.” We’re built to move and when you don’t, things break down. Think of humans as 90% water. Think of a pond without movement, leaving the water stagnant and muddied. Now think of a brook with slow, but continuous movement…that’s what’s healthy.
Phyllis Quinn & staff at PT Services of Guilford
specializes in Manual Therapy, which includes a screening process whereby the PT palpates the spine to assess the body in about 90 seconds. This helps determine the area of greatest restriction, hence where to begin the treatment. The whole body is screened, even if only one area is hurting, “because oftentimes where you’re feeling pain is where your body is trying to compensate” rather than being the area of the pain’s root cause (e.g.: whiplash in the neck from a car accident, which, upon assessment, also shows that the low back, which had no pain, was affected. Or…your dog pulls you, you get stuck in the rib, but it hurts in the neck. Neck muscles attach to the rib cage. The pain won’t ebb until the rib is taken care of…). To assess an issue and address its cause it is important to (re)check the whole body, how it moves and which areas may be “stuck.” Staff may also use Craniosacral Therapy, which involves lightly placing hands on a patient’s head and checking it for tension. Rather than forcing the body where it doesn’t want to go, this work takes it, instead, to where it wants to move, thereby releasing stress and enabling ease of movement and diminishment of pain. This therapy is said to help with
5. Diet is also key: the gut is a large part of your immune system. It’s important to not eat processed foods. Her tip to lose weight? “Stay away from the things that when you eat them you want more of them...” In addition to PT work, Quinn is also available for lectures/ public speaking on topics such as: osteoporosis; foot/back pain; arthritis; incontinence; and, how senior citizens can maintain independence. Quinn’s first degree was in Animal Science. In discussing why she ended up ultimately pursuing a PT degree, she says “What’s nice about PT is you can do research, you can teach, you can do geriatrics, you can do pediatrics, you can do home visits, you can work in a hospital… The other thing with PT is it’s really gratifying because you are, to some degree, pretty much helping everyone who walks in the door.” PT Services of Guilford accepts most insurance. McKibben’s grassroots group, 350.org, opposes the planned Keystone XL pipeline that, if built, is expected to transport Canadian tar sands oil across the United Bill McKibben States to refineries along the Gulf of Mexico. Increasing fossil fuel infrastructure, he says, is impractical, and we’d be better off investing in clean and renewable energies such as wind, solar and geothermal. It’s a theme also sounded by Frances Beinecke, president of the New York City-based Natural Resources Defense Council and author of Clean Energy Common Sense. With the Frances Beinecke failure of the U.S. Congress to enact climate legislation, her group, encompassing 1.4 million online members and activists, is pressing the Obama administration to live up to its pledge to regulate the carbon dioxide emitted by power plants. The leading culprits for climate-changing gases, they contribute 40 percent of the country’s carbon emissions. “It’s time to act, and we have to act now,” Beinecke says.

On the Energy Front
“Tell politicians that you care about this. We’ve got to get countering climate change high on the priority list.” ~ Richard Somerville the climate conundrum, as well as National Geographic’s Change the Course national freshwater conservation and restoration campaign. Competition for water is increasing in several parts of the country, she says, and will only get worse as dry conditions increase demands on groundwater. Endangered sources detailed Sandra Postel in her extensive related writings include the Ogallala Aquifer, vital to agricultural operations across much of the Great Plains, and California’s Central Valley, the nation’s fruit and vegetable bowl. In the Colorado River Basin, which provides drinking water to some 30 million people, water demands already exceed the available supply—and that gap is expected to widen with changes in the region’s climate. In other regions, the problem is too much water from storms, hurricanes and flooding, a trend that Postel and other experts say will also worsen
as the world continues to warm and fuel weather extremes. Beyond the loss of lives and property damage, this “new normal” holds stark implications for communities. “We’ve built our bridges, dams and other infrastructure based on 100-year records of what’s happened in the past,” advises Postel. “In a lot of ways, how we experience climate change is going to be through changes in the water cycle. If the past isn’t a good guide to the future anymore, we’ll have to change our water management.” (See nrdc.org/ water/readiness by city and state.)

On the Ocean Front
The world’s oceans are being transformed by climate change in ways we are only beginning to understand. Since the Industrial Revolution, oceans have absorbed a significant portion of the carbon dioxide generated, experiencing a 30 percent rise in acidity; that’s expected to reach 100 to 150 percent above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century, according to the nonprofit National Academy of Science (NAS), in Washington, D.C. “Thank goodness for the oceans, but they are paying a tremendous price,” says Oceanographer Dawn Wright, Ph.D. Dawn Wright She’s chief scientist of Esri, in Redlands,

“Water, energy and food production: These things are tightly linked, and all are affected by climate change.” ~ Sandra Postel California, that analyzes geographic system relationships, patterns and trends. The higher acidity levels are “taking a toll on shellfish such as oysters, clams and sea urchins, as well as coral reefs, where much aquatic life is spawned,” Wright explains. Climate change may have other devastating impacts on the ocean food chain—and eventually us—that scientists are only beginning to discern. As just one of myriad impacts: Ocean acidification threatens the country’s $3.7 billion annual wild fish and shellfish industry and the $9.6 billion slice of the global tourism business that caters to scuba divers and snorkelers, according to a recent NAS study.
The Way Forward
We can be grateful for some hopeful developments in the call to act. Wright, who has advised President Obama’s National Ocean Council, is overseeing her company’s ocean initiative, which includes building an ocean basemap of unparalleled detail. While less than 10 percent of the world’s oceans’ underwater realms are mapped today, Esri is compiling authoritative bathymetric data to build a comprehensive map of the ocean floor. Public and private sector planners, researchers, businesses and nonprofits are already
using this map and analysis tools to, among other things, conduct risk assessments and provide greater understanding of how onshore development impacts oceans’ natural systems. Municipalities are also taking action. New York City plans to restore natural buffers to future hurricanes, while Philadelphia and other cities are restoring watersheds, replanting trees in riparian areas, adding rain gardens, laying permeable pavement and revamping roofs and parking lots to reduce stormwater runoff. Investing in such “green infrastructure” is less costly than expanding “grey infrastructure” such as underground sewer systems and water purification plants. Increasingly, local authorities are relocating communities out of flood zones to allow rivers to reclaim wetlands, an effort which also creates new recreation and tourism spots. Floodplains buffer against extreme flooding and drought, plus filter stormwater runoff, removing farm and lawn fertilizers and other chemicals that otherwise enter waterways, creating deoxygenated “dead zones” where aquatic life can’t survive, as exemplified by parts of Lake Erie, Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
“Thank goodness for the oceans, but they are paying a tremendous price.” ~ Dawn Wright “These solutions are unfolding here and there,” Postel notes, while also remarking that too many locales are rebuilding levees at their peril and allowing people to return to areas that
flood repeatedly. “An amount of climate change is already locked in. We will have to adapt, as well as mitigate, simultaneously.” Somerville, who helped write the 2007 assessment by the Nobel Prize-winning International Panel on Climate Change, labels it “baloney” when politicians say there’s not enough time or it’s too expensive to address the problem. “It’s very doable,” he maintains. “First, inform yourself. Second, tell politicians that you care about this. Then raise hell with those who don’t agree. We’ve got to get countering climate change high on the priority list.” McKibben recommends that the country gets serious about putting a price on carbon emissions. Meanwhile, he’s encouraged by the people-powered regional successes in blocking fracking, a controversial method of extracting natural gas, and credits grassroots groups for holding the Keystone pipeline project at bay. “We’re cutting it super-close” and need to change the trajectory of climate change, according to McKibben, who says we can still have good lives powered by wind and solar, but will have to learn to live more simply. “I don’t know where it will all end and won’t see it in my lifetime. But if we can stop the combustion of fossil fuels and endless consumption, then there’s some chance for the next generation to figure out what the landing is going to be.” Christine MacDonald is a freelance journalist in Washington, D.C., who specializes in health, science and environmental issues. All the Time in the World Transforming Anxiety into Artistry
P O W E R
by Marney K. Makridakis
A
sk American adults if they’re anxious about time and they’ll likely say yes. Our society even deems it expected, acceptable and normal to experience such stress, but is it necessary? It’s helpful to explore what is at the root of our problems with time and why we believe we benefit from worrying and complaining about it. Both are good first steps to releasing ourselves from the drama of getting caught up in and blaming time as a convenient catchall. Which of the following rationales apply to us personally? “If I can complain about being busy, I don’t have to examine other areas in my life.” “My schedule is wrapped up with my self-esteem; being ‘too busy’ means that I’m successful.” “Worrying about time gives me something to talk about.” “I don’t plan things I might enjoy because it can be too demanding or even scary—it just feels easier and safer to be bored.” “Worrying about time is a convenient excuse for not following my dreams.” Once we identify the perceived payoffs from worrying about time, we can see them for what they are: illusions that keep us from living our true potential. Awareness allows us to make a different choice and to partner with
time, instead of working against it. Einstein proved that time is subjective, illustrated every time we compare an hour in a dentist’s chair to an hour in the company of a loved one. Time behaves and feels differently based on many variables, like emotion, engagement, flow, desire, interest, pain and pleasure. Our perspective counts. With capricious factors dancing around in our every moment, we can see why time isn’t constant. Happily, we can use the relative nature of time to our advantage and choose what our relationship with it will be. Consider that with each instance we choose how we talk about, measure and experience time, we are actually creating a new paradigm of time for ourselves. We can relinquish general views and limitations of time that hinder us and emerge into the possibilities of time as anything but a defined line. It can be a vibrant, completely moldable, layered, multifaceted work of art that we may adapt as we wish, to custom design each and every day. Marney K. Makridakis of Dallas, TX, is the author of Creating Time: Using Creativity to Reinvent the Clock and Reclaim Your Life. She founded Artella magazine, the ARTbundance philosophy and the ArtellaLand.com community.

s recently as 2010, it would have been unimaginable for an annual medical conference including allopathic physicians to hold a meeting themed Illuminating the Energy Spectrum. Yet it happened at the soldout Institute of Functional Medicine 2013 annual international conference. Workshop topics ranged from bodily energy regulation to presentations by Grand Qigong Master Ou, Wen Wei, the originator of Pangu Shengong, and Medical Anthropologist and Psychologist Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., whose Four Winds Light Body School offers a two-year program on the luminous light body, also known as a local energy field, aura, life force, qi/chi or prana. The energy medicine practiced by acupuncturists and other health practitioners that offer any one of the 60-plus hands-on and hands-off modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Energy Medicine, by Linnie Thomas, operates on the belief that changes in the body’s life force can affect health and healing. The therapeutic use of any of them begins with an assessment of the body’s electromagnetic field. Then, a treatment

specifically designed to correct energy disturbances helps recreate a healthy balance in its multilayered energy field, comprised of pathways, known as meridians, and energy centers (chakras) that correspond to related nerve centers, endocrine glands, internal organ systems and the circulatory system. The objective for energy medicine practitioners is to uncover the root causes of imbalances—often from emotional stress or physical trauma—and harmonize them at a bioenergetic level before aberrations completely solidify and manifest as illness.
Clinical Support
James Oschman, Ph.D., an academic scientist and international authority in Dover, New Hampshire, has conducted decades of research into the science of bioenergetics—the flow and transformation of energy between living organisms and their environment. He explores the basis of the energetic exchanges that manifest via complementary and alternative therapies in his book, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis.
According to Oschman, there is now enough high-quality research in leading peer-reviewed biomedical journals to provide energy medicine the credence to transform from a littleknown, alternative healthcare modality into a conventional form of medicine. The progression to more widespread acceptance is similar to that experienced by acupuncture and massage.
Evolving Platform
For more than 35 years, pioneers of energy medicine like Barbara Ann Brennan, founder of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing; John F. Thie, founder of Touch for Health; and Donna Eden, founder of Eden Energy Medicine, have delved beyond conventional models of healing to confirm that our sensory experience of the world is as limited as our vocabulary to describe it. New language for new concepts is required, such as: nature’s drive for wholeness, resonance, a new band of frequencies, restructuring DNA, local fields and the non-local field, encoding, entrainment, strings, strands, attunement, evolutionary healing and vibration. Eden, who has had a lifelong ability to make intuitive health assessments later confirmed by medical tests, can look at an individual’s body, see and feel where the energy flow is interrupted, out of balance or not in harmony, and then work to correct the problem.
“Very little of the natural world that human beings evolved in still exists. In addition, our bodies haven’t adapted to modern stressors or the electromagnetic energies associated with technologies that occupy our living and working environments,” says Eden. “Energy medicine is invaluable because anyone can learn how to understand their body as an energy system and how to use techniques to restore energies that have become weak, disturbed or unbalanced.” Her teaching tools include her classic book, Energy Medicine, and Energy Medicine University, which she founded in 2006 in Sausalito, California. In a 2009 talk at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Oschman predicted that energy medicine will become prominent in antiaging medicine. “When I review the history of medicine, there are periods in which things stay pretty much the same, and then there are great breakthroughs. I think that with the advent of energy medicine, another milestone is upon us.” Learn more at issseemblog.org, the International Society for Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine website. POSITIVE ENERGY
( “+ E n e r g y ” )
For the Depleted Soul Transform
Distraction /Disorganization Into

ow many times have you berated yourself over the past 30 days (or even the past 3 hours) for misplacing your keys, glasses, cup of coffee or paperwork? Have you blamed the dog or your family for moving your things just to aggravate you? Even in these circumstances, you can shift to Positive Energy (+Energy) in order to enhance clarity and focus. When you are driving and have a moment of wondering “where am I going again?” or are jolted into awareness as you drive by the gas station and think “That makes two of us running on the big ‘E’ for EMPTY,” you can shift to +Energy and master the art of timely self care so you feel less shaken and more fulfilled. When you feel lost, disconnected, embarrassed or have energy-draining scenarios running through your mind… When you are ready to spew forth the hot-tempered agony of defeat… it’s time to engage in +Energy for the Depleted Soul. Like your car, your body is a vehicle which needs fuel in the tank in order to run. It provides messages letting you know when you are becoming depleted. +Energy involves making an investment, rather than expending your energy. It can involve the energies of time, money, attention, food, relationships, career… anything. You can either invest in the +Energy aspects of life or spend your energy like it’s leaking through Swiss cheese. Consider how you feel with every choice you make. +Energy, such as that used in an empowering statement (even a humorous one such as “When ‘I can’t’ calls, I hang up and call ‘I can…’”), helps you focus on making that investment and fills your “tank.” A negative focus, especially when oft-repeated, (e.g.: “I don’t have any time”) drains energy that could otherwise be used to fuel a more vibrant life. Among the multitude of healing modalities that help 26

with shifting to more +Energy are: acupuncture; coaching/ therapy; Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT); (guided) meditation; Reiki; T’ai chi/Qigong; time in nature hiking/ walking/running; yoga; and, more. However, the simplest way to begin changing focus is to take a deep cleansing breath followed by a full exhalation in order to access clarity [oxygen to the brain] and intuitive guidance [from the heart]. To regain a positive perspective on your self and the situation, it can also be helpful to remember to ask and listen to “What energy must I shift in order to be, do, and have that which will help me feel better?” When cultivating +Energy, it’s key to make healthy agreements with yourself. These are agreements that incur a stronger energy of relaxation and calm in your body, rather than stuckness or stress. Your heart feels open/loving and you have clarity in thought and voice. Examples can be: “When I start a meal, then I take three deep, cleansing breaths so I eat more mindfully, hence healthfully,” or “When I plan my week, then I include time to exercise/socialize,” or “When I answer the phone, then I smile because it makes me feel better and conveys a kindness to the other person.” The following “Seven Tips to Enhance +Energy for Focus and Flow” can also serve as a stimulus to the creation of lasting, healthy transformation to boost your quality of life. 1. Affirm: “I am willing to move forward with the premise that: The way I treat myself teaches others how to treat me and how they may treat themselves.” *Remember, when you agree to be responsible for the type of energy you exude in a place, relationship or circumstance, you make a difference by choosing to create +Energy flow. 2. Trust: “I give myself permission to heal, to feel better by celebrating my best every day, even when that best is

different, depending upon how I feel.” *Remember, when you internally honor your efforts great and small, you feel seen, heard and understood and create +Energy flow.
thereby creating more +Energy throughout the world.” *Remember, integrity is important. As you honor healthy agreements with yourself, you extend this practice out to others and +Energy flows and grows.
3. Assert: “My choice to make and keep healthy agreements with myself and others is important to me. *Remember, when you commit to do, be, or have what brings you to a level of comfort with yourself, each person, or circumstance, rather than being attached to a specific outcome or unmet expectation, you create +Energy flow.
No matter what life brings, may these tips help you both create a limitless flow of +Energy and invest in bringing greater clarity and quality into your life.
4. Confirm: “I am committed to making and keeping healthy agreements with myself.” *Remember, when you decide to come through for yourself, life comes through for you and you create +Energy flow. 5. Believe: “When I make a healthy agreement with myself, I ask empowering questions, make uplifting statements, and take inspired actions, which honor those agreements and help me invest in my quality of life.” *Remember, when you take time to be the observer, like an eagle above a storm, you get a fuller view from which to create +Energy flow.
Holistic Coach Diane Esposito offers customized “Healing Arts Sessions” integrating practices such as EFT, Reiki with guided imagery, aromatherapy, chakra flower color therapy, holistic coaching, angel readings, and/or Reflexology. 6. Decide: “I am now willing to make and keep healthy agreements with myself.” *Remember, you benefit when you invest in yourself and others are more likely to invest in you, as well, thereby increasing +Energy flow. 7. or more than a millennium, seekers have made spiritual pilgrimages on the Way of St. James, beginning at their chosen point in Europe, winding westward and ending in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Today, as portrayed in the 2010 movie, The Way, the core route continues to attract both secular and devout trekkers. It’s fair to say that every pilgrim derives something from the journey, although it’s not always what they expect. Alyssa Machle, a landscape architect in San Francisco, imagined that walking The Way would be a quietly contemplative and solitary experience. Instead, she spent weeks bonding with fellow trekkers: an Ohio schoolteacher trying to decide whether to become a Catholic nun, and a German woman in her 30s unsettled by falling in love with her life partner’s best friend, a war veteran in his 70s.
NaturalNewHaven.com
“Inevitably, each person had some internal battle that he or she hoped to resolve,” Machle found. “My own ideological shift was about setting aside preconceived ideas about how I would experience the path, and focusing my energy on the community that I suddenly was part of.” The diverse goals of the people Machle met on The Way speaks to the power of adventurous treks. From the Bible story of Moses and the Israelites crossing the desert for 40 years to young Fellowship of the Ring members hiking across Middle Earth, we like the idea of walking long distances as a way to get in touch with ourselves—and often with something larger. In America, there are as many trails to hike as there are reasons to do it. For Cheryl Strayed, author of the 2012 bestselling memoir, Wild, hiking
the Pacific Crest Trail at age 26 allowed her innate courage to blossom. A rank novice, she took to the trails solo, grieving the early death of her mother, and discovered a new kind of self-reliance. “Every time I heard a sound of unknown origin or felt something horrible cohering in my imagination, I pushed it away,” Strayed relates. “I simply did not let myself become afraid. Fear begets fear. Power begets power. I willed myself to beget power. It wasn’t long before I actually wasn’t afraid.” Other people on such journeys are inspired by their love for the environment, like Zen Buddhist priest and retired psychotherapist Shodo Spring, leader of this year’s Compassionate Earth Walk, a July-through-October protest of our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. It has engaged a “moving community” of shared prayers, meditation and yoga along the path of the pending Keystone XL pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, Canada, to Steele City, Nebraska. Spring emphasizes that the walk is intended to connect participants to
the land and the people that live on it. “We’re going to small towns,” she says, “where many residents make their livelihoods from oil. There’s a deep division between such people and our group. But when we listen to each other, that division gets healed.” Activist David Rogner says that longdistance walks don’t just raise awareness of political and social issues—they also give people hope. He spent 25 months walking across the United States in the first coast-to-coast roadside litter program, Pick Up America. “As we walked and picked up trash, we inspired people to believe there could be change,” he says. His trek gave him hope for his own future, too. He now believes, “If you commit your life to the healing and restoration of community and yourself, you are going to be wholly provided for.” Whatever the purpose, there are many scenic long-distance walking trails to choose from. The Pacific Crest Trail, from the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern California to the uppermost
reaches of Washington State, offers stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. The Appalachian Trail, which winds 2,200 miles between Georgia and Maine, provides 250 shelters and campsites. In Wisconsin, the 1,000-mile Ice Age Trail offers awe-inspiring views of glacial landscapes. Starting in North Carolina, the Mountains-to-Sea trail extends from the Great Smoky Mountains to the crystal-blue waters of the Outer Banks. In Missouri, the Ozark Trail sweeps through mountains, lush valleys and tumbling waterfalls. Plus, overseas trails await, as well. Sarah Todd is a writer and editor in Brooklyn, NY. Madison, CT 203.245.9317 kevinhealy@sbcglobal.net DrHealMe.com Applied Kinesiology is neurological evaluation to find dysfunction. It addresses problems instead of chasing pains. Dr. Healy tests if a therapy benefits the dysfunction and finds immediate answers about which result in the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial, and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. No single cure exists since disease (which includes a state of dysfunction) typically involves many areas of the body. The goal of any therapy-physical, chemical, or emotional-is to improve function, and a combination of therapies has the best results. See ad on page 10.

Natural Iodine Supplementation A Must for Most Americans
W
e all need iodine, yet most of us don’t get enough of it through our diet. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that iodine deficiency in the developed world has increased fourfold in the past 40 years and now affects nearly three-quarters of all adults. Numerous U.S. practicing physicians quoted widely in the media estimate that the incidence of hypothyroidism in our adult population may be between 30 and 70 percent. Thus, we can’t efficiently produce the thyroid hormones that serve as chemical messengers triggering nearly every bodily function. The presence or absence of iodine affects our every cell. Natural Awakenings Detoxifed Iodine is 100 percent natural, raw iodine in an ethyl alcohol solution. We thank all those that are benefiting from this product and enthusiastically telling us their great results. Available only at NAWebstore.com My wife, who suffered from extreme fatigue and other symptoms, saw a dramatic increase in energy after just a few days of taking the natural iodine drops. Now if she misses a day, she’ll end up falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon, like she used to do before taking the iodine. It works! ~ Aaron My doctor told me that I had a hypothyroid condition, prescribed medication and was happy with the follow-up test results, yet I noticed no positive effects on my overall wellbeing. Within two weeks of using the Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine, I had more energy, felt more awake and enjoyed clearer thinking and greater peace of mind. People even comment that I look younger. I am a fan! ~ Larry
Be Aware of Hypothyroidism Symptoms Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, is the most recognized and obvious indicator of low iodine intake because the thyroid gland contains more concentrated iodine than other organs. Symptoms can range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and a variety of skin and hair problems. Hypothyroidism can further cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers. In children, insufficient iodine has been strongly linked with mental retardation,
deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University, China’s Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and France’s National Academy of Medicine. The answer is simple: Taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage can rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the thyroid and the whole body.
Reasons Behind Iodine Deficiency Radiation: Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation emitted by cell phones, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens and other electronic devices. Iodized table salt: The human body cannot utilize the iodine added to this product. Low-sodium diets: Failure to use healthy salts to fulfill sodium requirements, plus over-
use of zero-nutrient table salt in foods, leads to iodine depletion. Bromine: This toxic chemical overrides iodine’s abilities to nourish the thyroid, adrenal and other hormone-producing glands. A known carcinogen, it is used as an anticaking ingredient found in almost all baked goods, unless the ingredients specifically cite unbromated flour. Iodine-depleted soils: Due to poor farming techniques, iodine and other minerals in soil have declined, so most foods today are devoid of naturally occurring iodine. Proper iodine supplementation with a high-quality product like Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine can prevent harm by protecting the thyroid and other endocrine glands and restoring proper hormone production.
