I am optimistic that 2017 will be a year of healing, expansion and realization of our individual and collective power. I truly believe all of this is possible if we are willing to let go of our attachment to old patterns, our mindset of fear and doubt—and continue our grassroots efforts. Brenda Tate Photography Whether you are a healer or looking to be healed, we hope our January edition will feel like a warm hug. This month (and every month) our editorial and rich array of local events and classes (see our community calendar) offer information and insights to help support you in enhancing your experience of wellness on many levels. This month, our editorial features also offer guidance to help you affordably utilize effective medicine and complementary modalities. I believe that access to healthcare should be an entitlement, not a privilege. I also feel that we need to take more personal response-ability for our own wellness by taking better care of ourselves and staying informed about options for healing and wellness that are not limited to the treatments offered by the medical establishment. I have a 20-year background in critical care nursing, so I appreciate the value of conventional medicine. We need well-trained health care professionals, who provide high-level, acute care for trauma victims and those who are critically ill. However, we can no longer afford to ignore the growing cost of chronic health issues (such as obesity, chronic obstructive lung disease and diabetes), which can potentially lead to serious complications requiring the need for complex, extended care in a hospital setting. In many cases, the consequences are: an endless revolving door (multiple hospital admissions) and/or a poor patient outcome—The utilization of resources is astronomical. In 2017, healthcare spending is expected to reach $4.3 trillion! As you will read in our local interview article: “Traditional vs. Non-traditional Health Care: How Does the Changing Nature of Healthcare Help Patients?” Dr. Diana Lopusny (Holistic Pediatrician in Milford) and Dr. Kevin Healy (Chiropractor and Applied Kinesiologist in Madison) both agree that integrative medicine is the wave of the future. Not only does the blend of traditional and non-traditional medicine offer a holistic approach to patient care, which could prove to be cost effective, but there is an increasing demand for this more balanced approach. Enjoy our great reads. Happy 2017!

Is There A Simple Solution To Your Back Pain?

I

s your back feeling the stresses of this holiday season? The human spine has 24 facet joints linking the vertebrae to each other and 24 joints attaching the ribs to the vertebrae. It does not take much to lock up any of these 48 joints, which can then lead to back pain. A short screening can help determine whether or not any of these joints are immobile and the cause of your back pain. Free 10-minute screenings will be held at Physical Therapy Services of Guilford, located in Branford, Connecticut. They will be offered on January 23 from 3-4 p.m. and January 16 from 4-5 p.m. For reservations, call Physical Therapy Services of Guilford at 203-315-7727. tarting January 22 and ending March 26 at Valley Spirit Cooperative and Wellness Center in Washington Depot, Alex Boianghu will present a 10-week series exploring the map of the subtle body, which includes the chakras and energy channels. The practices of Tsa (channels) Lung (energy)

were developed in Tibet during the 11th century as a way to support meditation practice. Since humans are energetic beings, stagnation and blockages in the energetic system also create physical and mental dis-ease. You will learn the nine breathings of purification, which prepare the channels for Tsa Lung. In addition, Boianghu will teach the five Tsa Lung movements and special breath retention techniques that help in clearing subtle body blockages. The class will be taught by Boianghu, who completed a five-year training program with Alejandro Chaoul of Ligmincha International. The series is $250 per person ($225 for early registration before January 15).

he World Conscious Pact presents Chaski Fest for Standing Rock at Danbury’s A Common Ground Community Arts Center on January 28 at 6pm. The community is invited to enjoy the free public show to gather donations for Oceti Sakowin camp and learn about the next steps for resisting the DAPL. Energy Transfer Partners has vowed to complete the pipeline and 575 water protectors are still facing charges. study from Drexel University, in Philadelphia, has linked autism spectrum disorder with prenatal exposure to organochlorine chemicals. The researchers examined 1,144 children born in southern California between 2000 and 2003 with mothers that had enrolled in a state-sponsored prenatal screening program. Blood tests were taken during their second trimester of pregnancy, a critical time for neurodevelopment, to measure exposure to organochlorine chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and pesticides such as DDT. These compounds were banned from production in the U.S. in 1977, but remain in the environment. It’s well known that they can cross the placental barrier, impacting neurodevelopment in fetuses. The researchers selected participants based on previous health diagnoses: 545 children with autism spectrum disorder and 181 with intellectual disabilities, plus 418 free of both issues as a control group. They found a 50 to 82 percent increased autism risk in children with the highest levels of four identified PCB compounds in utero, based on which ones were present. “The results suggest that prenatal exposure to these chemicals above a certain level may influence neurodevelopment in adverse ways,” says Kristen Lyall, Sc.D., assistant professor in the university’s A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, promising further related studies.

Autism Risk Linked to Banned Chemicals

clinical trial from the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine found that participants in a six-day, ayurvedic-based, well-being program showed metabolic improvements in blood tests for inflammation, cardiovascular disease risk (CDR) and cholesterol levels. Study participants consisted of 119 healthy men and women between the ages of 30 and 80. Sixty-five experienced a panchakarma program, a detox and rejuvenation protocol involving a vegetarian diet, meditation, yoga, massage, herbal therapy and other healing therapies. The other 54 served as a control group. Blood was analyzed before and after the test period. The researchers, led by Dr. Deepak Chopra, found measurable decreases in 12 phosphatidycholines (cell-membrane chemicals) associated with cholesterol, inflammation, CDR and Type 2 diabetes risk. They acknowledge that due to the short duration of the trial, the immediate changes were likely attributable to the vegetarian diet; more research is needed to determine the complementary role of the other therapies. “It appears that a one-week panchakarma program can significantly alter the metabolic profile of the person undergoing it,” remarks Chopra.

Early-to-Bed Kids at Less Risk of Obesity

R

Parents Use Complementary Health Care for Kids

he 2012 National Health Interview Survey, published in 2015, included a survey on the use of complementary medicine practices. Nearly 45,000 Americans were questioned, including more than 10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 17. The survey found that nearly 12 percent of children had used complementary medicine, either in a practice or product, during the year studied. The most common form of alternative medicine among children was natural supplements, such as fish oil, probiotics and melatonin. Chiropractic care and yoga were also popular choices. Researchers found that parents sought complementary approaches most often for children due to back or neck pain, musculoskeletal conditions, colds, anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or insomnia. esearch from the Ohio State University College of Public Health, in Columbus, suggests that the risk of childhood obesity, a growing concern in the U.S., can be reduced by putting children to bed before 8 p.m. The researchers examined reports from mothers of 977 4-and-a-half-year-old children born in 1991 regarding their typical weekday bedtimes. The answers were divided into three categories: 8 p.m. or earlier, between 8 and 9 p.m. and later. Responses were compared to the obesity levels of the same children at an average age of 15. Of the group with the earliest bedtime, comprising about 25 percent of the subjects, only one in 10 were obese, compared to 16 percent of those with childhood bedtimes between 8 and 9 p.m., representing 50 percent of the subjects. The youngsters that went to bed the latest reported a 23 percent obesity rate, the highest overall. Dr. Meena Khan, a sleep medicine specialist at the university’s Wexner Medical Study Center, comments about the challenge of maintaining proper bedtimes: “Kids do well with a schedule and a routine.”

study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in July confirms that physical activity in midlife can help reduce the chances of developing cognitive impairment in old age. Scientists studied data on the physical activity levels from 3,050 twins in Finland given questionnaires in 1975 and 1981. A phone interview more than 25 years later served as a follow-up cognitive evaluation, and the subjects were divided into three categories: cognitively impaired, suffering mild cognitive impairment or cognitively healthy. Individuals that participated in vigorous physical activity when they were middle-aged displayed lower levels of cognitive impairment compared to those that did less vigorous exercise.

Recirculating Jet Air Linked to Illness Aerotoxic syndrome is the medical term for the illness caused by exposure to contaminated air in jet aircraft, and it’s causing that ailment, plus the permanent disability and even death of airline employees and passengers. Whistleblowers have been met with ridicule and termination. The problem has been called the “asbestos of the airline industry” by critics. French scientist Jean-Cristophe Balouet, Ph.D., who discovered the syndrome in 1999, thinks it may have already affected 250,000 pilots, cabin crew and passengers worldwide. In 1963, aircraft moved from drawing fresh air into the cabin to “bleeding” part of it from the engines. The synthetic oil used by jets contains organophosphates used in pesticides and nerve gas, and was banned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for residential use in 2001 because of known toxicity. The byproducts of these carcinogenic organophosphates can also include aldehydes and carbon monoxide. Airplane seals wear out and there are no chemical sensors onboard aircraft to detect fumes— only noses to detect the “dirty sock” odor. The Aerotoxic Association continues to push for air quality detectors on all planes and the Cabin Air Quality Act sponsored by California Senator Dianne Feinstein. For more information, visit Aerotoxic.org.

Massive Tree-Planting Against Climate Change Indian officials report that volunteers planted more than 49 million trees on a single day in 2016, surpassing the 2013 world record of 850,000 in Pakistan. An estimated 800,000 volunteers worked for 24 hours planting 80 species of saplings raised in local nurseries along roads, railways and other public land. The effort is part of the commitment India made at the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015. The country agreed to spend $6 billion to reforest 12 percent of its land and bring the total forest cover to 235 million acres by 2030, or about 29 percent of its territory. Trees sequester carbon dioxide from the air and reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. India has experienced substantial loss of its forest cover in recent centuries as people cut down trees for firewood, pasture and development. Still, saplings need water and care and are susceptible to disease. Mortality rates can reach 40 percent after such massive tree plantings. Other countries are also replanting trees. Last December, African nations pledged to reforest 100 million hectares (386 square miles). A wide range of stakeholders from countries to companies also signed on to the non-binding New York Declaration of Forests that month, with the goal of halving deforestation by 2020 and ending it by 2030. Protecting Pollinators

Maryland Bans Bee-Killing Pesticides Maryland is the first state in the nation to pass strict restrictions on pesticides thought to be responsible for significant reductions in bee populations with enactment of its Pollinator Protection Act. Maryland lost more than 60 percent of its hives in 2015, each containing up to 20,000 honeybees, making it one of the states with the highest recorded declines. The national average is about 42 percent, yet across the country, farmers and gardeners are still using pesticides linked to colony collapse disorder. Globally, more than one-third of the world’s food supply could be a risk if these and other pollinators are lost. Neonicotinoids are one potent class of systemic pesticides introduced to agriculture in the 1990s that have been linked to bees’ demise. In recent years, pesticides such as Knockout Ready-to-Use Grub Killer, Ortho Bug B Gon, and AllIn-One Rose & Flower Care have been made available to consumers and beekeepers have noticed a corresponding increase in bee deaths. The Maryland law bans the use of neonicotinoids by everyday consumers that have been spraying home gardens and trees with these deadly pesticides. Farmers and professional gardeners are exempt from the law. A similar law is awaiting the governor’s signature in Connecticut. Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture has not officially recognized the well-researched link, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing it. Source: BeyondPesticides.org

Website Screens Packaging for Toxin Although food manufacturers have pledged to voluntarily eliminate bisphenol A (BPA)—an endocrine disruptor linked to developmental problems in fetuses, infants and children—in their packaging materials, it’s still found in the lining of many canned goods. Recent testing by an advocacy group found BPA in 70 percent of nearly 200 samples, including products from Campbell and Kroger, which have joined the pledge. “It’s in beer, coffee, tea, energy drinks and aerosol cans for whipped cream... it’s everywhere,” says Samara Geller, a database and research analyst with the Environmental Working Group (EWG). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, BPA is safe at the levels people are exposed to via canned foods, but many consumers would rather not take the risk. Consequently, EWG created a new tool to help consumers avoid the 16,000 products that may have BPA in their packaging. The numbers listed on package UPC codes can be compared against the database at Tinyurl.com/EWG-BPA-Lookup. “Our main goal was to get this out quickly to as many people as possible,” says Geller. “The UPC code is really your best defense to finding out what they’re talking about,” because product names can change.

Lobster Liberation

Monks Free Creatures from Certain Doom A handful of monks from the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society living on Canada’s Prince Edward Island spent a day buying up all the live lobsters they could find at the local fish market, and then chartered a boat. Once out to sea, they recited a brief prayer over their writhing cargo and set them loose in the Atlantic. “The whole purpose for us is to cultivate this compassion toward others,” says one of the monks. “It doesn’t have to be lobsters, it can be worms, flies, any animals; it can also be driving slower, so we don’t run over little critters on the street.” One participant, Victoria Fan, says, “It’s rethinking the way you normally see these creatures. Their happiness is as important as your happiness, their suffering is as important as your suffering.”

California lawmakers have enacted a bill that aims to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. It extends previous efforts such as the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 instituted to reduce emissions by 2020, along with another piece of legislation that vows to boost legislative oversight of climate change programs organized by the California Air Resources Board. Supporters say that emissions rules have created new jobs and led to billions of dollars of investment in California’s clean energy sector. Opponents argue that the strict targets have caused some job losses, particularly in oil manufacturing. The state, having the world’s eighth-largest economy, has further announced a goal of fighting climate change and improving air quality by putting 1.5 million zero-emission state cars on the road by 2025.

S

cientists from the University of Colorado have determined that individuals older than 65 that run three times a week will likely burn oxygen at the same rate as a 20-year-old runner. Despite being more than four decades older, these runners spend a similar amount of metabolic energy as their younger counterparts. Published in the American College of Sports Medicine journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the study tested 15 older and 15 younger runners. Each ran a minimum of three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time during the prior six months. The subjects were tested on a specialized treadmill that measured the force applied to the running belt. Each person ran for five minutes during each test at different speeds between 4.5 and 6.5 miles per hour. Regardless of running mechanics and technique, the older runners utilized their metabolic energy at a similar rate as the young runners at all speeds. “Our prior research suggests that the muscles themselves are becoming less efficient. I think of it as your body is like a car. Your body has its own fuel efficiency, and what we’ve seen is that the fuel efficiency in muscles is reduced in older adults that are sedentary or only walk occasionally,” says lead researcher and Professor of Kinesiology Justus Ortega. goodluz/Shutterstock.com

esearch published in the American Journal of Medicine found that treating people with a blend of cold-pressed sesame oil and rice bran oil significantly normalizes blood glucose levels. Testing involved 400 men and women for eight weeks, including 300 that had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, by replacing cooking oils in their diet with a blend of sesame and rice bran oil. The researchers, from Japan’s Fukuoka University and India’s Council of Medical Research, divided the patients into four groups. For two months, 100 healthy people and 100 Type 2 diabetes patients replaced their cooking oils with the sesame/rice bran blend, another 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with five milligrams per day of the diabetes drug glibenclamide (glynase in the U.S.) and the remaining 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with a combination of the same dosage of glibenclamide, along with consuming the sesame/rice bran oil blend over the two-month period. After four weeks and eight weeks, the researchers found the diabetes patients that consumed the oil blend had significant reductions in fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. They also had lower levels of glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) and improved high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). Those treated with the diabetes drug without consuming the oil blend showed none of the same improvements.

A UNIQUE APPROACH To Wellness & Weight Loss by Lori Bloomis

M

ost of us have been slaves to food in one way or another, all our lives. Quite literally, what we eat controls many aspects of our existence—how we look and feel, our range of productivity and performance, the quality of our emotional experiences, whether we stay well or fall prey to disease, even the quality of our sleep and the nature of our dreams. We hear of all the health benefits of losing weight. Won’t it be great to lower your risk for diabetes? Your blood pressure may go down. Less stress on your heart! You may no longer need some of the prescription medications you’re taking. Of course you’ll look better too. Who wouldn’t want to lose weight? If you are overweight, you have probably gone through the never ending struggle of trying to find the magic diet to lose those extra pounds and keep them off. We get caught up in this dieting merry-go-round where we con16

tinually lose the battle of the bulge. So we begin to cut out our favorite foods and all those things that are supposed to be bad for us. Maybe we even lose a little weight. Unfortunately, most of the time we either don’t make our weight loss goals, or we lose weight and then gain it back. You think to yourself: “If only I tried harder, If only I had more willpower.” We blame our parents and our genes. We look at the people who seem to eat anything they want and never gain and wonder, “Why is it so easy for them and so difficult for me?” The reason that fad diets don’t work is that they do not match up with reality. The idea that there is one diet right for everyone is false. There never has been and there never will be such a thing. This is why in the past 300 years, literally thousands of books have been written on the subject, but there has never been one diet that worked for everyone. The reality is, that as individ-

NaturalNewHaven.com

uals, we are as unique on a biochemical level as we are in our fingerprints. This is known as biochemical individuality. Our genes define our uniqueness in terms of how we look—height, weight, color of hair, skin, eyes, facial features, etc. They also define our nutritional requirements, and the foods that are right, and wrong, for us. If you’re overweight and have tried a simple fix like cutting carbs or going low fat, you were probably disappointed with the results. Like most quick fixes, these simple solutions don’t get to the heart of the problem. We want our bodies to burn calories and we want to feel energized, but somehow the foods we eat are just not giving us the fuel we need. Even though it seems like we’re eating less and less, those few calories we are eating end up going straight to our mid-section. The right diet will keep you feeling energized and keep your metabolism high so you burn up stored calories. You wouldn’t put unleaded gas into a diesel engine, would you? In the same way, eating the wrong foods is giving your body the wrong fuel. Knowing how you metabolize nutrients and exactly what foods support your body, and your mind, is the key to successful weight loss The best way to lose weight and determine the foods that are good for you is by designing a whole foods plan based on understanding and identifying your body’s unique metabolism. Once you recognize your metabolic individuality, everything changes. The balance shifts, the tables are turned—suddenly you’re the one in control of food, it’s not in control of you. Eating right is no longer a complex challenge and food is no longer your adversary. When you know what YOU need to eat, and how to choose foods that effectively sustain your body’s unique style of functioning, eating is what it should be—easy and enjoyable. We are as unique as our fingerprints and our bodies process food in unique ways. Have you ever seen the infomercials with stunning testimonies for raw fruits and vegetables and fresh juices? All those people seem so healthy and energized. Yet Eskimos can live on mostly fatty whale blubber and they have no problem with heart

disease. The Masai of Africa have remarkable health, and eat eating almost all animal products and little if any vegetables. Some people actually need to eat fat in order to lose weight. Others need to have lots of protein, or very little. A low carb diet makes some people gain weight, and others lose. Every BODY is different. Imagine the sense of excitement and empowerment you’ll have the first time you go to the supermarket and select groceries in a truly well informed and targeted way—rather than being forced to make purchases in a random, haphazard fashion, based largely on guesswork about what might or might not be good for you or your family. Think of the freedom you’ll experience once you’re able to identify, with certainty, what kind of meals or snacks can make you feel great and give you high levels of energy and endurance for hours at a time. Won’t it be liberating to know exactly what you can eat anytime you need to be at your best for a business presentation or a tennis match, to take an exam or embark on a long road trip? What’s more important than knowing how to choose just the right sustenance to enable you to put in a long day at the office, enjoy your kids, pursue your hobbies, work in the yard, or relax at home? You’ll wonder how you’ve managed to function all these years without this fundamental self-awareness of proper nourishment. When you start to eat correctly, you’ll experience lots of positive changes that will sharply improve the quality of your life. Some of these benefits will occur right away, others will take a while longer.
n Here are the kinds of improvements you can expect: n Natural, permanent weight loss, without struggle, deprivation or hunger n Your food will be efficiently converted to energy rather than stored as fat
n You’ll enjoy plenty of physical and mental energy following meals and snacks

n You’ll feel full and hunger-free, 4 to 5 hours after meals
n You’ll lose your cravings for sweets and starchy foods n Improved resistance to colds, flu, recurrent infections n Reversal of chronic or degenerative health disorders
n Slowing of the aging process
n Digestive problems—indigestion, gas, bloating -- will subside
n Your ability to concentrate will be significantly enhanced
n You’ll enjoy a renewed sense of wellbeing and positive mental outlook
n Irritability, anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity will fade away You no longer will need to rely on willpower alone. The secret to achieving weight loss success is not working harder, but working smarter. You don’t want to beat yourself up or deprive yourself. You want a diet that will give your body the proper fuel for burning calories and losing weight. As the old adage says, “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to keep getting what you’re getting.” Rather than guessing which foods are right for you, you will know what foods are going to target your problem.

How does it work?

Once how you metabolize food is identified, you’ll receive your food list and get detailed info about your body’s needs. Foods will be divided up by category—meats, grains, vegetables, fruits, etc. Within each category there will be foods that will help you lose weight. Other foods on the list will make you gain weight. There are also foods that fall somewhere in between. You will learn what combinations and ratios of food are best for your body. Eating the right foods in the right amounts is simple with this information. Many people are shocked when they receive their food list. Some of the

foods they thought were bad are actually good for them. Some of the foods they heard were good for dieting simply don’t agree with them. It’s an eye opener for most people. Implementing the diet takes a new way of thinking for many. For example some people have whole milk on the list of good-for-me and skim milk the opposite. We’re conditioned to think low-fat milk is better but for some of us, lipids in the diet can keep the metabolism burning calories. Let’s face it, if going fat-free were the solution for everyone, would we have so much obesity today? The Life Center offers a medically supervised weight loss program that is covered by most insurances. You will have your own naturopathic physician and your own nutrition/life coach guiding you along the way. They will help you discover Your metabolic uniqueness and help you reach your ideal weight and a higher level of wellness. Lasting changes in behavior do not occur overnight, so you will receive a lot of support to transform how you nourish yourself. The coach will provide emotional support and encouragement, and the doctor will monitor your health as your weight decreases. ith stressful work environments, life-and-death decisions and long hours, nurses in our modern healthcare system increasingly suffer from burnout and compassion fatigue. Fifteen years ago, Mary E. Harris, CCRN, a cardiac ICU nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital and a board-certified holistic nurse, created a holistic retreat for the organization’s nurses to learn how to feel healthier and revitalized doing their life-saving work while avoiding burnout. Through discussion, presentations, journaling, yoga, drumming and guided meditation, the participating nurses delve into personal self-care

beliefs and self-renewal practices. Cathy Alvarez, RN, the assistant patient services manager at Yale New Haven Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center, continues in Harris’ footsteps leading the monthly Nurture the Nurse retreats. In addition to being a certified holistic nurse and nurse manager and leader, Alvarez is a Reiki II practitioner. As of April 2016, inpatient and outpatient nurses are also able to qualify for six contact hours by taking the eighthour program, which is held one Friday a month September through June at the Mercy by the Sea Retreat and Conference Center, located in Madison, Connecticut. Combined with Alvarez’s promotion efforts—such as increasing communications with nursing managers and uploading program updates to the organization’s computer screensavers—the retreat is

full each month with waitlists. “Although our goal is to offer this amazing retreat to everyone in our organization, we need to focus our current resources on nurses. We maintain the number of nurses in each group at 12 to foster a sense of community and intimacy that allows them to talk more freely in the smaller group setting,” explains Alvarez, who began leading the program in September 2015. January’s retreat will focus on supporting the nurse leader, including assistant nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, nursing directors and others. The Nurture the Nurse retreat begins in the morning with one hour of self-care information and tools. The dynamics of energy, the barriers of taking care of ourselves at work and what nurses Cathy Alvarez are currently doing are some of the subjects covered. “We put self-care into perspective versus doing regular things. We learn about power of the breath, simple yoga stretches, fruit-infused water, and so many other observations and ways to bring self-care to ourselves at home and at work,” says Alvarez. Patrick Moore, ND, a nutritional scientist with an extensive background in nutritional and botanical medicine, then focuses on supplements, using food as medicine, super foods and more with the nurse particiPatrick Moore pants. The day also includes yoga, a Djembe drum circle, self-reflection journaling time and guided imagery. By understanding and heeding their own self-care needs and patterns of behavior, the nurses can better handle the stress of their positions and model healthier behavior for their patients and coworkers, states Alvarez. A New Year ... A New Way by Donatella Moltisanti

A

s the intense, transformative and unpredictable 2016 has drawn to a close, we wonder what the new year of 2017 is going to be like. While no one really knows what the future brings, it is interesting to look at a few different traditions and perspectives to understand what 2017 is bringing into our lives and our future. From the perspective of the science of numerology, the year 2017 has the power of the number One. According to numerologists, the mystical properties of numbers influence everything in the world. The number One has the inherent vibration of new beginnings: the energy of the master, the director and the pioneer to influence our lives. This year is all about the power of the individual! It will not be about the masses, others or other’s opinions, but rather the power of one’s voice and one’s actions. The influence of the number One will allow hidden talents, ideas and projects to find their light and a path to be. Ambition and action will flourish effortlessly. New and 20

unique initiatives will become common; they will be supported independently because of the inspiration and courage that their energy will support within us. They will show up on a personal level using our leadership abilities and talents. Now is the time to invest in a dream or a business idea. This year’s energy will support us developing and expanding our interests, and increasing our status and recognition. Passion, creativity, commitment and self-confidence is what we need as we walk on a path that supports us in our personal expression like never before. It’s our opportunity to shine, and without concerns about what others do or think. The year 2017 will call upon our star to ignite our light, for us to participate and to contribute to the whole, to learn new things, to perfect old skills and to be seen. Another strong influence this year is brought in by the Fire Rooster from the tradition of the Chinese New Year. According to the Chinese calendar, the 2017 Fire Rooster will make its entrance on January 28 with the second New Moon, after the Solstice. Excelling in the qualities of leadership and organization,

the Fire Rooster is fully supporting the energy of the number One. Its characteristics include leadership, the ability to handle big tasks, efficiency at multitasking, high intelligence and a good sense of humor. The Rooster personality is being passionate about networking activities and supporting charities that will influence an active social life; it’s reliable, honest and trustworthy. The number One is calling for Oneness. Spirituality is also a big theme for 2017. One is the number of the Creator, Consciousness and Light. When multiplied or divided by itself, it remains the same; it is compared to the unchangeable and immutable energy of the Spirit. Our Spirit will benefit from the number One vibration; like a silent and invisible supporter, it will help us, in spite of everything, to keep a positive attitude. According to the principle of the Law of Attraction, we will need to be aware of avoiding nesting negativity or pessimism in our inner space, so as to not feed or align with other people’s negativity. It will require a great effort of consciousness to maintain the desired frequency in our space and to influence the whole. This is the year of a great spiritual evolution, a time to shine into a oneness that develops within, so as to spread without. Even though it looks like discrimination and separation wants to take place in our apparent social involution, we are called upon even more deeply to be a positive influence with our benevolent actions and personal expressions. This year is calling us to own the right to show up and speak up, and to use our voices to make a difference in the world. The energy of One and the influence of the Rooster are here to rediscover the power of the individual. It is to support and inspire the leader within us, to know that everyone counts and every emotion is important, and that our attitude makes a difference in the big picture. In spite of the rampant fear of social discrimination and separation, this year’s overall influence will support our approach to solidarity, kindness and brotherhood. While the political and economical world may seem out of our control, the reality is that we can choose to step into action as the leaders of our lives and decide who to support with our dollars and our opinions. In 2017, people will feel called to voice their solidarity towards the less fortunate. While stupor and powerlessness often took place in 2016, action, courage and an active expectation for justice will be more tangible in 2017. This is the year of action, free will and awakening. We are all One and we are all called in to make it a great year! Traditional vs Non-Traditional Healthcare How does the Changing Nature of Healthcare Help Patients? by Angela Pascopella

I

t’s a new year with a new president and potentially new federal health care system for the nation. While traditional medicine is sometimes driven by what health care insurance companies will cover or not in terms of dollars and cents, the changing nature of health care is good news for patients. While some local non-traditional physicians still say medical doctors and western medicine overall is wary of their tactics, such physicians feel that patients are more knowledgeable about different options. And the more knowledge the better in healing. Traditional doctors may still resist the homeopathic route or anything that doesn’t purport western medicine in the form of medication and surgery as answers, but more are opening up to the fact that more patients seem to want other solutions. And this integrative paradigm is a win-win for patients and physicians. “The patient is searching around among many different professionals. Some are talking to each other; some don’t want that relationship,” says Dr. Kevin Healy, a chiropractor and applied kinesiologist in Madison. He points out that some traditional doctors are finally acknowledging that peppermint oil might be helpful, for example. Peppermint oil has been known to relieve sore

22

New Haven / Middlesex

NaturalNewHaven.com

muscles, and has antimicrobial properties so it can help freshen bad breath and soothe digestive issues. Right now, Dr. Healy says the nation is seeing a sharp rise in ADHD and prescribing medication for it, which manipulate a child’s dopamine levels. Cases and diagnoses of ADHD have increased dramatically in the past few years, according to healthline.com. The American Psychiatric Association says that 5 percent of American children have ADHD. But the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 11 percent of American children, ages 4 to 17, have the disorder. That’s an increase of 42 percent in eight years. But Dr. Healy, who sees patients from Massachusetts to New Jersey, says that instead of just prescribing medication, he would like to work with a gastroenterologist, for example, study the blood levels of patients and find out why patients’ dopamine levels are low, which can make someone feel fatigued and have mood swings and memory loss. He believes that food might be connected to such problems. For example, Peyer’s patches are small masses of lymphatic tissue found in the small intestine. They form an important part of the immune system by monitoring intestinal bacteria populations and preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines. “I’m a kinesiologist and I could find what food allergens can be inflaming the gut,” he says. “Doctors need to leave the egos at the door and need to acknowledge that we don’t know everything. Use the patient’s nervous system as a diagnostic tool. Try to fix the patient and find out what went wrong in the first place.” Although medication and surgery certainly have their place and are necessary with many medical ailments, many patients want to rely less on medications if and where possible. Some patients may also tend to seek out alternatives in frustration because western medicine failed them, or at least did not treat their illnesses, but instead just masked the symptoms for a period of time. They can’t lose weight, their hair is falling out, and they have serious digestive problems. No one else can help them.

Non-judgmental medicine

People as far as Brooklyn and across Connecticut come with their children to see Dr. Diana Lopusny, a Holistic Pediatrician in Milford. She calls herself an “integrative pediatrician” who doesn’t NOT believe in western medicine and antibiotics, but gives parents a voice in their children’s health. “A lot of parents are embracing this integrative life,” Dr. Lopusny says. “We do a lot of homeopathy, we use a lot of herbs, and we support integrative medicine. We use naturopaths and we use chiropractors. We Dr. Diana Lopusny believe in allowing the body to heal naturally.” She adds that when children are ready to receive vaccinations, she requires that parents first read up on vaccinations

and what ingredients they include as well as side effects. “Parents shouldn’t rely on me solely; they need to be aware of the potential issues,” she adds. Then, she discusses with each parent if they want all the vaccines, or just some vaccines, or none at all. Dr. Lopusny usually gives one vaccine per month per baby. “Parents have to know what we are doing with their baby,” Dr. Lopusny says. “We’re a pro-choice and non-judgmental practice. If they don’t want to vaccinate, that’s fine. If they want to do them all, that’s fine. That’s the difference--we help guide parents.”

Time, money

Healthcare spending is expected to reach $4.3 trillion in 2017, according to reports published online. Non-traditional physicians in the area agree that the western medical system is overbooked. Doctors can’t give patients more than a few minutes during appointments. Sometimes, they spend more time looking at a computer, reviewing a patient’s medical history and checking off certain medical health codes, which correspond to what health insurance companies would pay for, instead of really listening to the patient’s needs or ailments that day. To find the best doctors, physicians say patients should call the local hospital. And talk to the head nurse in the intensive care unit or emergency room. Look at testimonials online and consider the medical school of the doctor—is it a reputable school? Also, what kind of feeling do you get? Listen to your gut instinct, Dr. Healy suggests. Some doctors don’t even put their hands on patients anymore. And patients need to ask—”How confident do you feel in their expertise? Are they personable? Are they open minded?” “I’ve been educating the patient instead of talking over their head,” Dr. Healy says. “I’ve pushed patients to stay loose, stay flexible, and I’ve pushed many patients to yoga and swimming. Chiropractic isn’t everything,”

When MDs take up non-traditional therapies Noting that patients do want more solutions, some MDs are moving away from the conventional model by bolstering their knowledge with additional training in functional medicine, such as acupuncture or homeopathy. While it’s comforting seeing traditional doctors are acknowledging such benefits, Dr. Healy says MDs should leave the experts to that. “Even with my extensive education in medicine, I’m not going to remove your gallbladder,” Dr. Healy says. “I like that they are looking and recognizing that they don’t know everything and they see there are benefits to other therapies,

but I’m not going to start handing out antibiotics,” he says. For example, medical doctors might want to push vitamins to patients, which may be helpful for certain conditions. But if a doctor is not an expert, they might not know all the facts. Take vitamin E, Dr. Healy says. One study found that there were 17 percent more cases of prostate cancer among men who took vitamin E alone than among men who took a placebo, according to the October 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. But the bottom line, from DrSinatra.com, is that you can be safe taking vitamin E, as long as you take it with other antioxidants. DrSinatra.com says this: You want to take up to 400 IU of vitamin E with mixed tocopherols, along with other antioxidants such as 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C and/or 50 to 150 mcg of selenium to protect against the pro-oxidative effect of vitamin E. And Dr. Healy pointed out that “a big fad now is Vitamin D.” But he cautions that it’s also fat soluble and in order for it to be helpful, patients must take fish oil with it for the body to absorb it properly. “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing,” he says.

March on Washington

Aside from the natural path, Dr. Lopusny believes food is underrated when it comes to healing the body. “Most of the time when you deal with skin issues, it’s also a gut issue or inflammation from food,” she says. And instead of prescribing Steroids, which is typical traditional protocol, she investigates if it’s an allergy to a certain food. She recently had a baby with eczema, whose parents ate a lot of South American foods, including tortillas. Dr. Lopusny first had the mother, who is breast-feeding, and the baby go on a gluten and dairy-free diet. This diet helped heal the eczema but not completely. Dr. Lopusny then realized it was the corn in the mother’s and baby’s diet that was still causing the eczema. Shortly after taking corn from her diet, the eczema cleared up. It makes Dr. Lopusny determined to march on Washington, D.C., figuratively, and advocate that medical schools in the U.S. teach about the nutrition/disease link. “Sadly we don’t even have nutrition classes in med school,” she says. “Before I die, I’m going to Washington D.C. and advocate for nutrition in medical school training. Food is medicine--that’s the bottom line.”

Future of medicine

Dr. Lopusny and Dr. Healy agree that integrative medicine is what more people want. And the medical field will move toward the non-traditional approach as people ask for more options. “This is the wave of the future. We are the pioneers,” Dr. Lopusny says. “I’m going to be in heaven looking down. This will happen because there is no way the world will stay the way it is.” Dr. Kevin Healy

What are some of the most significant natural alternatives you report on in Honest Medicine? The ketogenic diet is one standout because it was the standard of care for children with epilepsy in the 1920s— until pharmaceutical companies began to produce lucrative anti-seizure

medications; then its use diminished through a lack of proponents in the medical field. Its use was revived in the 1990s due to the efforts of Jim Abrahams, a Hollywood writer/director, father of a child with epilepsy and one of my heroes. I found small studies that proved that the ketogenic diet successfully stops children’s seizures nearly 70 percent of the time. This highly effective alternative has none of the negative side effects of antiseizure drugs. Most doctors aren’t in favor of the diet approach and instead often prescribe affected children up to three or four meds as an easier option. The diet follows Hippocrates’ dictum, “Let food be thy medicine.” Another standout is intravenous alpha lipoic acid, pioneered since the 1970s by Dr. Burt Berkson, who used it mainly for end-stage liver disease and diabetic neuropathy. He saved many people from needing liver transplants with infusions of this powerful, versatile antioxidant. photo by Keith Peterson

F

ollowing up on the success of her bestselling book Honest Medicine: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for LifeThreatening Diseases, Julia Schopick plans to spread awareness of the efficacy of low-dose naltrexone (LDN) in treating autoimmune and other ailments later this year with a new book coauthored with professional writer Don Schwartz. Her first book, endorsed by many leading integrative health practitioners, earned the top National Indie Excellence Award for Alternative Medicine. It taps into nearly 200 scientific studies, with her research into innovative treatments driven by a quest that she and her late husband both believed added 15 years to his life after a terminal prognosis at age 40. The former English teacher at Long Island University and Virginia State University, now an Oak Park, Illinois resident, has contributed to the American Medical Association publication AM News, writes online and print guest columns and shares her journey in media interviews.

Did anything surprise you? I chose to include effective treatments that are non-toxic and inexpensive. I didn’t realize that several of them were effective for many different conditions. For example, LDN has been used since the mid-1980s to treat autoimmune diseases, of which there are more than 100; it also treats some cancers and AIDS. Research shows good results

for conditions as varied as multiple sclerosis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s, because all of them have an autoimmune component if they are not directly autoimmune diseases. Similarly, the ketogenic diet is now being studied as a treatment for cancers, especially brain tumors, brain injuries, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Intravenous alpha lipoic acid is also used to address autoimmune diseases, some cancers and other conditions.

Are you finding that people are increasingly moving away from drugs and, if so, why? Yes. The norm used to be that patients followed their doctors’ orders without question, which routinely entailed prescription drugs. Today, people are realizing that drugs often come with horrendous side effects. Consider, for instance, that ads for some injectible treatments for autoimmune diseases caution against side effects of cancers, including lymphomas. A side effect of some multiple sclerosis drugs is a serious brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. People are listening closely, reading and researching their health issues, and don’t want risky side effects, especially when safer options are available.

In dealing with chronic illnesses, how crucial is it for caregiver and patient to maintain a positive, optimistic attitude? Multiple studies, like those referenced in Mind Over Medicine, by Dr. Lissa Rankin, and Radical Remission, by Kelly Turner, Ph.D., show that a positive state of mind is crucial to healing. One of the benefits I report in my book is that patients and caregivers will do even more research looking for alternatives when doctors tell them nothing else can be done. And many find healing treatments; there are many such cases reported in my book. I like the African proverb, “When you pray, move your feet.” Randy Kambic is a freelance writer and editor in Estero, FL, and regular contributor to Natural Awakenings magazine.

value coverage that includes annual wellness exams, phone or virtual appointments and educational classes, plus followups and urgent care at minimal costs. The U.S. mainstream fee-for-service approach, whether paid by insurance or cash, has been criticized for encouraging unnecessary tests and procedures because doctors are paid for services performed. To maintain income, they typically shorten appointments to increase the number of patients they see. Lewis emphasizes, “Time is the valuable factor in DPC—healthy lifestyle changes, which can prevent or reverse 70 percent of health concerns, cannot be communicated in 10 minutes.”

Medical Cost-Sharing

AFFORDABLE

For generations, Christian communities have operated health care sharing ministries (HCSM) to collectively share the cost of each other’s medical bills as an alternative to outside insurance. Members are exempt from current Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA) mandates. Liberty HealthShare, a nonprofit HCSM chartered by the Mennonite church, believes that everyone has the right to practice religion as they see fit. Their members share a commitment to personal health and sharing in the burden of health expenses with others that have these values. “Many in the functional and integrative medical arenas also believe in these principles,” says Tom Blue, of Richmond, Virginia, a director with The Institute for Functional Medicine. “Cost sharing feels very familiar; you present your card to your provider, but there’s no set network of providers, which is favorable for those seeking more progressive forms of care.” Expanding upon this model, Blue worked with the company to create its Liberty Direct program (LibertyDirect.org). Individuals pay an annual membership fee plus a monthly share amount. After fulfilling their annual unshared amount of out-of-pocket expenses (similar to a deductible), participants’ healthcare costs—including approved naturopathic and alternative treatments—can be submitted as expenses to be shared by the group. Liberty Direct provides financial advantages to DPC practitioners and patients by subsidizing membership fees; it favors nutrition over chronic prescription dependence by reimbursing physician-prescribed nutritional supplement and pharmaceutical expenses under the same terms. Members must be in good health with a lifestyle that helps sustain wellness, including good nutrition, exercise and abstinence from tobacco use and drug and alcohol abuse. The program also accepts approximately 7 percent of applicants on provisional terms when pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes can be improved through lifestyle changes. They pay an extra fee per month to cover the cost of a health coach; when they achieve their goals, they become full members paying regular rates.

Complementary Care Alternatives to Insurance Cost Less by Meredith Montgomery

T

he latest National Health Interview Survey available, from 2012, shows an annual expenditure of $30.2 billion in out-of-pocket costs for complementary health approaches, benefiting 33 percent of adults and 12 percent of children, and representing about 10 percent of out-of-pocket U.S. healthcare costs. Insurance rarely covers complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in full. As provider networks shrink, premiums rise and the future of healthcare reform remains uncertain, health-conscious consumers yearn for innovative ways to afford this kind of care.

Membership-Based Care

When Dr. Chad Krisel worked at an urgent care center, he saw up to 55 patients a day. Since opening Integrative Family Medicine of Asheville (IntegrativeAsheville.org), in North Carolina, with Dr. Brian Lewis, he averages 12 patients a day. His team provides a membership-based practice in a payment model known as direct primary care (DPC). Endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, DPC is broadly accessible. By applying simplicity, sustainability, quality and collaboration, their integrative practice provides comprehensive care for less than what many pay for phone service. “DPC removes traditional financial incentives and conflicts of interest because membership fees fund us. Our only incentive is to help and heal patients,” Krisel explains. Paying for memberships out-of-pocket (often electing high-deductible plans) or via a health-sharing plan, clients 26

“The economics are staggering,” says Blue, who used to pay $760 a month for insurance with a $12,400 deductible and now pays a monthly share of $449 with a family unshared amount of $1,500. HCSMs are affordable because of restricted overhead budgets. Plus, they appeal to naturalhealth conscious clients and can decline unsuitable applicants. “This concept of communal cost sharing works—Liberty’s share amounts decreased in 2013 and have not changed since,” comments Blue.

GreenSurance

Told she was past medical hope, Kari Gray, of Kahului, Hawaii, sought to heal from cancer using natural medicine. “When thousands of dollars spent for natural protocols were denied reimbursement by my insurance company, I saw that the system needs to change,” Gray recalls. CAM therapies still deemed “unproven” by traditional insurance companies gave Gray a second chance at life. Following remission, she began a 20-year search for alternative medicine insurance. Finding none, in 2014, she created GreenSurance (MyGreenSurance.com). Serving people that proactively care for their health and prefer natural medicine as primary care, GreenSurance developed an evidence-based and science-backed list

of 40-plus covered CAM modalities, including thermography, energy therapy, biofeedback, essential oils and homeopathy. It also covers conventional medical and emergency care. Enrollees of the member-owned organization are supplied third-party payer information for provider direct billing once the member’s out-of-pocket amount is met. They use any state-licensed provider and the program is often more affordable than traditional insurance. GreenSurance is currently investing resources to broaden consumer access to the tax advantages of a health spending account (HSA). H.R. 1752 would allow enrollees in any healthcare-sharing program to open an HSA. “Simply, we’re a co-op whose members empower us to create an exempt program that protects members from ACA penalties and traditional health insurance,” says Gray. “More, we’re a grassroots movement for change.” Krisel notes, “Doctors too, are livid about the current status of America’s healthcare system. Be vocal about what’s important to you. The more voices heard in Washington, the more change we’ll see.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

Getting to ‘Yes’ with an Insurer C

Know What a Policy Covers

Before using a complementary or integrative service, inquire about specifics: Sometimes preapproval or a referral is required to qualify; coverage may be limited to a certain network of practitioners; verify visit limits or the number required; and get details of out-of-pocket costs. Keep insurance-related communications records, including notes on calls and copies of bills, claims and letters, to help with any claim disputes.

Explore Available Options

Ask the insurance provider about coverage of CAM approaches, including whether a rider or supplement to the standard plan is required to cover them. Inquire about discount programs, such as when members pay for fees and out-of-pocket costs, but at a lower rate. State insurance departments and professional associations for

complementary health specialties may know which insurance companies cover specific CAM approaches.

Ask Practitioners About Payments

When seeing a complementary or integrative practitioner, clarify payment and insurance details before the first visit. Learn the cost of initial and follow-up appointments; how many appointments are needed; additional costs such as for tests, supplements or equipment; and if they offer an incomebased sliding scale. Also confirm which insurance plans are accepted and if the patient or provider files claims. When insurance doesn’t cover a service, inquire about installment plans and discounts for cash payments. Jeanette Dietl/Shutterstock.com

onventional insurance rules adversely affect Americans’ consideration of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). According to the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapy use increased over the prior decade, but only among those without insurance. For those with progressive policies, coverage for CAM approaches is usually only partial.

Save with Tax-Exempt Accounts

Flexible spending accounts offered by some employers allow participants to set aside pretax dollars for health-related expenses. Health savings accounts can be established by individuals with high-deductible health plans to save for medical expenses. Contributions are tax-deductible and interest is tax-free. Kettlebell training promotes fat loss, toning of major muscle groups and greater functional strength, while requiring less time than its dumbbell counterpart.

K

ettlebells can replace almost all other exercise equipment in providing an all-in-one workout, combining strength and cardio benefits,” explains Shelly Bumpus, an Athletics and Fitness Association of America-certified personal trainer and owner of the Studio Women’s Fitness Center, in Scott, Louisiana. Bumpus often uses kettlebells in strength and conditioning exercise classes to afford a balanced full-body workout that’s fun and engaging. “Consistent kettlebell training imitates and strengthens movements we use to function in daily life,” explains Athena Concannon, an American College of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer and healthy lifestyle blogger at AchieveWithAthena.com, in Boston. For example, actions like lifting grocery bags and standing up from a sitting position become easier.

NaturalNewHaven.com

She notes that the growing popularity of different kinds of functional training in the past decade has bolstered recognition of kettlebell benefits as people seek ways to move away from assisted weight machines toward natural body movements. Kettlebells now show up in circuit training, CrossFit and both functional fitness and step classes. People see results because, “It takes multiple small and large muscle groups to redirect movement while maintaining control with a kettlebell, requiring more muscle recruitment than with a traditional dumbbell; it’s because its shape provides unbalanced weight resistance that strengthens a multitude of different muscles,” explains Julie Joffrion, owner of All-Inclusive Health, in New Orleans. A kettlebell’s configuration requires exercisers to pay close attention to

maintaining a neutral spinal posture and avoid locking knees and wrists to avoid pain or injury. By starting with a smaller weight and focusing on form first, exercisers build a foundation that allows them to more fully enjoy the benefits. Momentum training with kettlebells also compares favorably to traditional dumbbells or weighted bars. “The distinctive shape and weight distribution allows for a variety of exercises and grip positions that are not as comfortable and effective or even possible with a dumbbell,” says Joffrion. Although kettlebells have been popular with Russian athletes since the 1700s, they are a relatively new addition to U.S. fitness clubs. “I first learned about kettlebell fitness in 2005 when some gyms were purchasing them. However, because trainers didn’t yet know how to use or instruct on proper movement of the bells, they sat dormant for awhile. I started using them and fell in love. After a few months, I knew this would be something I’d stick with for a long time,” recalls

Now the founder of KettleX, a business focused on making kettlebell fitness available to everyone through DVDs, private sessions, online coaching and seminars, Kleidman says, “The beauty is that the bells keep you strong and looking great, no matter what your age or fitness experience. I’ve rarely met a person that didn’t get hooked after working out with the appropriate bells, be it a child or an 80-year-young client. “They are excellent for power, cardiovascular enhancement, endurance and physical symmetry, which is important for the health of the tissues and joints. At the same time, they create a healthful-looking physique, including toned arms, flat abs and a round, lifted butt.” she adds.

Participants completing 20 minutes of a high-intensity kettlebell workout burned an average of 20 calories per minute in a study sponsored by the American Council of Exercise. The researchers compared this level to running a six-minute mile and credited the more intensive calorie burn as a result of challenging the total body, which quickly raises the heart rate when performed with speed. The study concluded that kettlebell training is especially beneficial for those that want to fit in a time-efficient, total body workout. Proponents go a step further, claiming that kettlebells can deliver increased benefits in half the time of traditional workouts. Bumpus advises, “If you’re solely interested in building strength and muscle power, stick with free weights, but if you’re looking for a way to burn fat while increasing muscular and cardiovascular endurance, kettlebells are a valuable option to incorporate into your training.” Taylor Geiger is a freelance writer in Phoenix, Arizona. he household is settling for the night when the 5-yearold cries out, “My throat hurts!” “There’s no need to panic,” says Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, in Pecos, New Mexico, an integrative physician and chief medical officer of Weil Lifestyle. “It’s pretty easy to figure out if it’s strep throat, which requires antibiotics, or something you can treat at home.” Only 10 to 20 percent of sore throats in children are caused by Streptococcus bacteria which, if not properly treated, can lead to heart damage. The first question to ask is, “What are the symptoms?” If these include sudden onset of a severe and worsening sore throat without any complaints of scratchiness; a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or more; headache or stomach pain; and the lack of a stuffy nose, cough or sign of a cold—a trip to the pediatrician is essential and a course of antibiotics is necessary, says Low Dog. The vast majority of youngsters’ sore throats, which may accompany a common cold, are caused by viruses and will heal on their own in about a week. Many natural remedies will help children feel better and relieve the pain; some cost so little they are nearly free. Salt water gargle: “A glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of sea salt swirled into it is an old-school remedy that works well for kids at least 5 years old,” says Erika Krumbeck, a naturopathic doctor and licensed primary care physician practicing pediatrics in Missoula, Montana. She notes that a salt water gargle can also moderate the symptoms of strep until the child can see a doctor. The Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies confirms that the salt water draws excess fluid from inflamed throat tissues. It also loosens mucus and removes other irritants, including bacteria, allergens and fungi. Just make sure children don’t

swallow the salt water, counsels Krumbeck. Warm compresses: A warm water compress using a wet hand towel applied for 10 or 15 minutes every hour loosens mucus and is soothing. “It’s amazing how effective these familiar practices are,” says Krumbeck. “Grandma knew what she was doing.” Lemon juice and honey: “Honey is sweet, so kids love it,” says certified nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, of New York and Los Angeles. This traditional recipe works because the honey has antibacterial properties and the lemon juice is packed with immune-boosting antioxidants. Snyder cautions that babies younger than 12 months old should never be given honey because their immune systems cannot handle the bacterial spores sometimes present in the sweet treat. Elderberry: The tiny purple berries of the Sambucus nigra L. plant shortens the duration of colds and flu often suffered by air travelers, according to research that includes a large Australian study. Elderberry syrup appeals to kids because it tastes delicious. Low Dog recommends keeping a bottle on hand at all times because it’s hard to know when a child will complain of a scratchy throat. “This yummy syrup is good for all ages. It’s so safe. I love it,” says Low Dog, adding, “Plus, you can always use it on whole-grain pancakes.” Sage and Echinacea: Drinking sage tea and gargling with echinacea are old-time remedies for sore throats that now have scientific backing, says Snyder. Go for a twofer and add a little echinacea to the tea, she suggests. A Swiss study showed that an echinacea/sage spray soothed sore throat symptoms just as well as a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray, which can have side effects that include more swelling and even allergic reactions; the suggested spray should not be used with children under 12. Pairing up a dose of safe and gentle, time-tested sore throat recipes with a big hug will go far toward relieving most little ones’ suffering.

edical Doctor Alan M. Dattner, a 35-year pioneer in the field of holistic dermatology, faithfully follows nature’s principles in supporting skin health. His book Radiant Skin from the Inside Out: The Holistic Dermatologist’s Guide to Healing Your Skin Naturally maps out how skin reflects the body’s healthy or unhealthy organs and systems. Finding the internal root cause of problems on the skin, the body’s largest organ, takes time to investigate. Dattner, who practices in New York City and New Rochelle, New York, and considers himself a “skin detective”, says that although his forensic work continues to expand, he still begins his sleuthing by compiling a detailed and comprehensive history that yields clues for solving health puzzles and points him in the direction of what’s causing problems. Some patients with acne also have symptoms of bloating, gastrointestinal issues or chronic bowel disease. Others may have traveled to another country where they contracted diarrhea from a parasite or foreign bacteria that upset their intestinal microbiome.

NaturalNewHaven.com

Skin outbreaks can also be the result of food sensitivities or food allergies. “I make patients aware of the issues underlying their skin problems so that they understand the connection between internal health and skin. Then they can make conscious food choices,” says Dattner. Diet is a critical aspect of healthy skin. Food sensitivities can cause inflammation that can show up on the skin, he explains. Dattner incorporates several diagnostic techniques and remedies from other medical traditions, including herbal, homeopathic and ayurvedic. A tongue diagnosis he uses is taken from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He uses Applied Kinesiology to refine his therapeutic choices as the results align with his knowledge of dermatology, immunology and integrative medicine. Janice MacKenzie, acupuncture practitioner, teacher and author of Discovering the Five Elements: One Day at a Time, views the skin as a third lung, because it breathes. “If the organs of elimination aren’t working well—large intestine, liver and kidney—then toxins leave through the

aslysun/Shutterstock.com

your

skin, another organ of elimination,” says MacKenzie, who practices in Perkasie, Pennsylvania. “When constipation leaves toxins to be reabsorbed into the blood and recirculated through the liver, the body, out of desperation, seeks ways to get rid of toxins through the skin. This can result in eczema, psoriasis, rashes, boils and acne,” notes MacKenzie. In TCM, the facial redness of rosacea originates in a heating of the blood caused by toxicity. An inflammatory condition of excess energy and toxicity in the stomach travels upward through the stomach energy meridian that runs from the eye to the second toe. It’s supposed to flow downward through the mouth, throat and intestines and out. Elina Fedatova, cosmetic chemist, aesthetician, owner of spas in Chicago and Kalamazoo, Michigan, and formulator of Elina Organics, addresses skin as an aspect of a whole healthy body. Her product line is created wholly from organic plant extracts and essential oils, made in batches every two weeks. These purely natural products can be ingested without harmful effects. “Formulas are made using holistic principles and adjusted for each season,” says Fedatova. She agrees with Dattner, “Protecting skin from the inside with a nutritious diet that benefits the entire body is vital, as important as keeping the skin’s surface clean.” In caring for skin from the outside, a gentle exfoliation that can be done at home three times a week using a honey mask is the first step. Skin cells produced in the deepest layer gradually push their way to the epidermis every 30 days and die. Dead cells pile up unevenly and give the skin’s surface a dry, dull appearance. Treatment serums, moisturizing lotions and eye and neck creams are necessary elements of a complete facial skin care regimen, as is a natural sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. “Using skincare practices and products that follow nature’s example are the perfect external complement to good internal health,” says Fedatova.

A

lmost 60 percent of America’s pet cats are overweight, according to a survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Feline obesity can lead to joint pain, hinder self-grooming and make it harder to use the litter box, all resulting in fat cats being left at shelters by frustrated owners. Chubby kitties also are more prone to osteoarthritis, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems and non-allergic skin conditions. “Potential health problems make overweight cats harder to adopt,” says Deanna Schmidt, with the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in Pittsburgh. “On Fat Cat Tuesdays, we waive the adoption fee for cats 14 pounds and over. We counsel adoptive families and follow up so that ongoing healthy eating and exercise continues to melt away the pounds.” Experts advise that a house cat should maintain the sleek, fluid motion of a jungle cat. Viewed from above, healthy cats have a distinct waistline, an inward curve between the rib cage and hips. Pick it up and step on the scale. The pet’s weight should comprise between six to 10 pounds of the total.

NaturalNewHaven.com

“The first time I saw healthy cats, I thought they looked small because I’d become used to seeing fat cats,” recalls Traci Pichette, founder of Pumeli tea and gift boxes, in St. Petersburg, Florida. She’s not alone in her assessment.

While free-feeding dry food is easier for owners and allows a cat to snack at will, some take advantage and overeat, often from boredom. To help the transition from always-available dry food to mealtime wet food, use kibble as a special treat. Food puzzles, widely available online or in pet supply stores, will keep Kitty busy during the day. Homemade feeding puzzles work, too; put a small amount of kibble in a cardboard tube or small box, tape the end shut and randomly cut small holes in the sides. Kitty will have to roll the tube or fit a paw inside to retrieve a treat. “Free-feeding dry food is comparable to a constant supply of Fritos on our desk,” says Jackson Galaxy, author of Cat Daddy. “As far as the myth that dry food cleans teeth, I ask, do you floss with Melba toast? Dry food leaves plaque. A grain-free, wet food adds needed mois-

ture and fat to their diet. A cat’s teeth are designed to rip and tear, not crunch.” “Changing my cat’s food to an all-wet diet slimmed her down to a healthy weight. I hated the smell, but it made sense to me that dry food was just carbs,” says Pichette. “At first, she whined at not having food all the time, but got used to it, and now she can eat treats in moderation. The cool thing is we’re all enjoying her increased energy and playfulness.” Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their natural diet comprises 90 percent meat and 10 percent vegetable matter. A roaming cat’s native routine is to search for food, hunt, catch and eat, groom and nap. Because each catch is small, they eat frequently. “There’s still an ancestor cat inside domesticated felines, a ‘raw’ cat that wants to hunt for its food,” explains Galaxy. “We need to play into that thinking and feed at intervals; ideally, every five hours or so, or at least in the morning, after work and about an hourand-a-half before bedtime.” While the family’s morning and evening schedules mean just a quick scoop of food in the bowl, the third meal should be an interactive one. “A battery-operated toy or waving a laser light around is not play,” says Galaxy. “Interactive play is not texting with one hand and wiggling the fishing pole toy with the other. You have to get up and move to let the cat search for the toy, watch and wait, then pounce. It engages the animal mentally and physically and brings the raw cat to the surface. When you reach the point of diminishing returns, the pet is tired and it’s time for a meal.” His foundation improves lives of shelter animals, teaching staff to clicker train, entertain and exercise their cats to make them more adoptable. After an active day, the cat will be ready for bed, syncing its rhythm with the rest of the household. “A full play session satisfies natural instincts and prevents the cat from hunting your ankles as you sleep,” advises Galaxy. “It’s not a luxury to have a variety of toys; it’s a necessity for having a quality relationship with a healthy cat.”

EVERYDAY ZEN FOR CHILDREN

Kevin Healy, DC 17 Woodland Road, Madison, CT 203-245-9317 KevinHealy@sbcglobal.net DrHealMe.com

LISA BURTON, MPH, OTR/L

Applied Kinesiology is a neurological evaluation to find and treat dysfunction. Different because it addresses causes instead of chasing pains, Dr. Healy tests if a therapy alleviates dysfunction, finding immediate answers as to which provides the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. Generally, no single cure exists as disease and dysfunction typically involve multiple areas of the body. The goal of any therapy—physical, chemical, or emotional—is to improve function; a combination of therapies typically yields the best results. See ad on page 29.

As you begin or grow your Mindfulness Practice, are you searching for fun and effective ways to bring Mindfulness Tools to the children in your life? You already know the well-being benefits of reduced stress and anxiety while improving sleep, self-esteem, and relaxation. Now learn Tools to easily incorporate within your daily routine that calm and focus both adults and children. Call Today, to reserve your complimentary 30-min phone consultation. Services available remotely or in-person.
