Lemon Balm Lowers Blood Pressure, Reduces LDL Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a soothing herb from the mint family, can significantly improve the condition of patients with chronic stable angina, reports a recent study in the Journal of Herbal Medicine. Researchers at Iran’s Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences tested 80 patients with the condition, which involves chest pain linked to a lack of blood flow to the heart. The patients were given three one-gram doses a day of lemon balm powder or a placebo. After two months, the patients given the lemon balm had significant reductions of “bad” low-density cholesterol (LDL), both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and increased workout capacity, a measure of heart function. 10

A Harvard study was conducted on the diets of nearly 28,000 male health professionals spanning two decades between their 50s and 70s and published by the American Academy of Neurology. It found those that drank orange juice and ate leafy greens, berries and dark orange and red vegetables suffered significantly less memory loss than others. Subjects reported every four years and were examined for both thinking and memory skills. Those that ate about six servings of vegetables a day were a third less likely to develop poor thinking skills than those consuming two servings; those that drank orange juice every day were half as likely to develop poor thinking skills as those drinking one serving per month. Men that ate larger amounts of fruits and vegetables 20 years earlier were less likely to develop similar problems, whether or not they kept eating larger amounts of fruits and vegetables later.

Meditating or listening to classical music altered biomarkers associated with cellular aging and Alzheimer’s disease in adults experiencing memory loss, according to a recent West Virginia University study. The 60 participants had subjective cognitive decline, including forgetting familiar names and losing objects, a condition that may be a preclinical stage of Alzheimer’s. For 12 minutes a day, they either listened to instrumental classical music or did a kirtan kriya meditation involving chanting, visualization and finger poses. After three months, all subjects had increases in a key beta amyloid peptide protective from Alzheimer’s, as well as better memory, mood, sleep and quality of life, while the meditation group experienced significantly better improvements. Activity in two chromosomal markers of cellular aging—telomere length and telomerase activity—increased for both groups, especially among those that practiced more frequently or started with lower cognitive scores. The improved biomarkers were maintained or even strengthened three months after the study ended.

Light Pollution Disturbs Sleep Being exposed to high levels of artificial outdoor light at night contributes to insomnia and greater use of sleeping pills, reports a new study from South Korea’s Seoul National University College of Medicine. The researchers studied the records of 52,027 people without diagnosed sleep disorders—60 percent of them women—and correlated their sleeping pill use with their residential location relative to artificial outdoor light intensity. The brighter the outdoor lighting, the more likely were sleep issues and the greater and more frequent use of sleeping pills. The study joins other research that has shown that artificial nighttime lighting—outdoors and indoors—disrupts circadian rhythms, potentially leading to such metabolic and chronic diseases and conditions as cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression.

Pine Bark Soothes Prostate Benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH), a condition that affects half of men older than 60, is related to increased prostate gland size and a reduced flow of urine from the bladder. To test the effectiveness of the pine bark extract Pycnogenol on BPH, researchers from Italy’s D’Annuncio University divided 75 men with the condition into three groups: One was given 150 milligrams a day of Pycnogenol, another received standard non-drug management and the third was given conventional drug treatment. The researchers found that urination frequency, urgency, intermittency and nighttime occurrences significantly improved after 60 days of treatment among the pine bark extract group.

Let Food Be Thy Medicine And Medicine Be Thy Food

A

by Himanshu Bharadwaj

yurveda, translated as “science of life” is the ancient natural wisdom of health and healing. It’s also the mother of all healing systems. It focuses more on root causes rather than symptomatic treatment. Ayurveda looks at health in terms of physical, mental and subtle aspects of the whole body. It goes really deep into considerations, such as cooking preparation, storage, times, seasons, age of the patient, environment, lifestyle and food habits (such as sequence of eating and pleasant eating atmosphere, and where and how food is grown). The modern, affluent lifestyle has taken us away from the use of fresh fruits and vegetables. The diet has become high in saturated fats, refined sugar, meat and commercially processed foods. These tasty, rich, heavy and sweet foods have little nutrient value. People substitute lack of nutrition in food by chemical supplements. Modern science only sees food value as calorie and bio-chemical content. There are many subtle aspects that Ayurveda recognizes. 12

Eating

Eating is a sacred act that involves the entire self and needs to be done right. n Eat in moderation and only when there is real hunger. Do not eat food standing. Sit and eat silently. n Fast occasionally to detoxify the body and clean the gastrointestinal tract. Fasting also improves mental strength. Do not have a large meal when concluding the fast. n Eat simple. Too many kinds of foods in a meal will cause distraction to the mind. Eat food with love and care. It will increase life energy in the person. n Try to eat light and warm for dinner for good sleep and digestion. Eat about three hours before sleep. Avoid cheese, ice cream, yogurt, melons and cold foods for dinner. Warm milk is good when taken in the evenings. Largest meal should be taken during lunch time. Get up early before sunrise. Best time to eat is one hour after getting up in the morning until sunset. Chew food thoroughly. Digestion

begins in the mouth with salivary action. Chewing also enables easy digestion. Eat one-third solid, one-third liquid and onethird air. Avoid overeating and know that a burp is a signal from the body to stop eating. Do not combine hot and cold foods in the same meal. Do not combine raw and cooked foods together unless they are small in amount, Avoid leftovers beyond one night and do not combine fresh foods with leftovers. Use mild spices in the meals for taste, overcoming bad combinations and also for improving digestion. n Use ghee or clarified butter instead of refined oils. Ghee is a healing food. It helps improve intelligence, memory and digestion. Use natural oils like coconut, peanut and mustard oils. Do not eat the same oil or, for that matter, the same dish every day. Create variety with different kinds of wheat, rice, lentils, vegetables and fruits in meals. n Use jaggery/unprocessed sugar directly prepared from the cane juice, instead of the white refined sugar. Use honey instead of white sugar. Honey is a good source of

heat and energy and is good for digestion. n Cumin and fennel help reduce gas when added to any cooked food. n Make a powder of fennel seeds and natural sugar in the ratio of 2:1. In the morning with an empty stomach, have one tablespoon of this mix with warm water for a month. This will help patients with migraine problems. n Ginger and garlic are best antiviral drugs. n Do not eat honey with an equal amount of ghee by weight. It becomes toxic. Use local honey. n Avoid melons with most foods including dairy, fried foods and starches. Melons are a full diet in themselves. They help in reducing weight. n Fruits should generally be eaten alone. Avoid mixing milk with fruits. Only mango and milk or dates and milk are exceptions. n Keeping a small piece of ginger in the mouth and gently chewing it helps with cough problems. n Guava, pears and papaya are useful against constipation. n Avoid eating radishes with milk. Radish is very good for diabetes patients. n Deep fried foods are not good for the eyesight. n Cooking or baking of honey is not recommended. n Have a small amount of green chilies in the diet. It is antibacterial and improves immune system. n Eating cashew nuts with honey every day enhances memory. n Mixing black pepper and ginger in warm yogurt/lassi is good for digestion and during cold weather. n Ajwain, or carom seeds, and cumin seeds are good against acidity. Roast any one of them and eat with natural salt. When jaggery/natural sugar is added to it, it will help fight constipation. Simply smelling carom seeds can open a blocked nose. n Lastly become a vegetarian. Avoid meat, fish, chicken and eggs. It’s good for health. Meat is high in cholesterol, uric acid and toxic chemicals from the use of hormones, antibiotics, unnatural feed substances, additives and preservatives.

Eating is a sacred act that involves the entire self and needs to be done right. Drinking

n Do not drink anything standing. Sit and drink silently. Drink water by slowly sipping small quantities of water to allow saliva to mix. Saliva is alkaline in nature. Stomach is acidic in nature. For good digestion, this neutralization will help. Birds and animals drink water slowly too and we should learn from them. n Drinking small amounts of water while eating stimulates digestion. Water taken after meals causes indigestion and obesity. Drinking excess water during meals is bad for digestion and dilutes nutrients content in the food being eaten. One should instead drink small amounts of water several times during the day. Completely avoiding cold water and cold soda drinks; instead, drinking warm water is very healthy for the body and will also help in reducing weight. Cold water shrinks large intestine and causes constipation. n Drink water that has been kept overnight as the first thing in the morning. It will cure constipation problem. Swallowing a piece of garlic with water in the morning will help patients suffering from blood pressure, heart and liver problems. n Drink butter milk for good digestion. Mix natural salt and mint leaves to enhance its properties, n It’s better to drink juice in the morning, buttermilk in the afternoon and milk in the night. n Drinking tea made from Cinnamomum tamala, or Indian bay leaf, helps people suffering from common cold and headache. Adding cloves, basil and ginger and cinnamon in the tea is helpful in protecting against cold in wintertime. n Drinking warm milk mixed with a half tablespoon of tumeric helps heal the body against any inflammation, Alzheimer’s and liver problems. n Drinking carrot juice daily helps relieve stress.

n Drinking aloe vera juice daily helps patients suffering from jaundice and weakness. n Avoid milk with banana. This sweet and sour combination creates toxins that can cause sinus congestion. Adding crushed cardamom helps improve the digestive power of milk. Having milk with sour fruits or meat causes milk to curdle in the stomach causing indigestion. Do not have milk with yogurt/lemon/tomatoes or cucumbers. n Drinking Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem juice, is very good for blood purification and skin problems. When mixed with honey and applied on the face, it is good for the skin, removes dryness and pimples. Applying a mix of lemon juice and honey is also good for the skin. n Consuming milk and fish at the same time produces toxins that disturb digestion and cause skin disease. n Boil 5-6 cloves and a cup of water. Bring the temperature down to the room temperature and drink this water. It helps bring relief to bronchitis patients. n Vegetable juices have a calming effect and detoxify the body. It’s better if they are taken after the meal. Fruits and fruit juices should be eaten by themselves and not mixed with any meal. n Lemon fights against free radicals in the body, is an antioxidant and reduces chances of cancer. Use lemon juice in the diet. Mix few drops of lemon juice in a teaspoon of honey. Applying this paste on gums twice a day cures bleeding gums. n Alcohol is addictive and not helpful for evolving our consciousness and thus not recommended in Ayurveda. The modern lifestyle is such that we drink alcohol to get peace in the night and coffee to stimulate us during the day, n Do not have yogurt with milk, sour fruits, fish, cheese, banana and hot drinks Himanshu Bharadwaj, a designer by profession, teaches yoga, meditation and holistic cure. MIMOSA PUDICA SEEDS Nature’s Gut Cleaner

A

by Gregg Kirk

s many doctors will tell you, the basis of your immune system lies in your gut. After taking longterm antibiotics or other pharmaceuticals (especially steroids), patients can develop severe cases of digestive imbalances, yeast or Candida albicans overgrowth, ulcers and Leaky Gut Syndrome. This is also a perfect environment for parasites, which according to the New York Times, at least 50% of the population of the Western World has. The good news is that Mimosa Pudica seeds seems to be able drag these pathogens out of a person’s digestive tract without the damaging side effects of pharmaceutical antiparasitics and antibiotics. Mimosa Pudica is a flowering, creeping perennial native to South and Central America. It is nicknamed “Sensitive Plant,” “Touch-Me-Not” and “Bashful Plant” because of its unique reaction to being handled or disturbed. When touched, the plant’s leaves fold up and recoil almost immediately and then re-open a few minutes later. When taken in capsule form with water, the seeds of the plant expand in the gut and form an elastic, sticky paste that adheres to invaders of the intestines. Once parasites and antimicrobials are stuck to this gelatinous mass, they are dragged 14

New Haven/Middlesex

out of a person’s system in the next bowel movement. Because the digestive tract does not break down mucilaginous herbs like Mimosa Pudica seeds, the gel the seeds create can pass through the entire intestinal tract intact, dragging things that don’t belong with it. With repeated and steady use, the seeds also have the following benefits: Anti-ulcer and gut-healing properties: Because the seed gel can adhere to ulcer-causing bacteria like H. Pylori, it can remove the cause of the ulcer while also helping heal the wounds themselves. Those who frequently take pain medications and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can be prone to ulcers in the intestinal tract and Mimosa Pudica seeds can help remove the acid these drugs cause and restore the mucosal integrity of the intestinal walls. Immune Support: The fact that Mimosa Pudica seeds remove the agents that compromise the intestines is the first step to better immune system response. The second step involves Mimosa Pudica seeds’ ability to raise antioxidant levels in the body when poisonous toxins are present.

NaturalNewHaven.com

Antidiarrheal: Patients with gut imbalances frequently have chronic diarrhea. If it persists, it can be dehydrating and eventually dangerous. Worse still, many patients take over-the-counter remedies like Imodium A-D that slow intestinal movement, creating constipation and thereby hindering the removal of the body’s toxins. Mimosa Pudica seeds, contain high amounts of tannins, flavonoids and polyphenols that are natural antidiarrheals with no adverse side effects. Antimicrobial: In a 2015 study, Mimosa Pudica was found to have “significant activity” against the bacteria E.coli, S.aureus, B.subtilis and S.typhi. The combination of the plant’s high flavonoid levels in combination with the stickiness of the seed gel make it a formidable disruptor of microbial activity in the intestinal tract. ADVERTORIAL MB: Can a person have too much Qi coursing in their body?

Qigong Healing How to Reverse Disease Naturally An Interview with Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack

T

(Part 1 of 2)

his interview was conducted by Michelene Bell, publisher of “In Light Times Magazine”. Jeff Primack is a Qigong teacher that has studied with many Qigong masters from all over the world and has taught over 50,000 people in live seminars. MB: What benefits does Qi provide and HOW does it accomplish healing? JP: Say you’re a battery… and the Qi is the life force that keeps the battery going. When the juice inside is used up… the battery is lifeless. Qi is related to your lifespan. If people squander energy on arguing and negative pattern behavior than how can anyone increase energy? Qigong understands where people lose their energy and how to get it back. Yet, Qi has profoundly physical effects that unlock our potential.

5000 Years Ago Chinese Medicine said, “Qi Moves the Blood.”

Standing still relaxed in a Qigong posture a person can circulate as much blood as they could running for 3 miles!! Jogging releases a flood of Cortisol and negative stress hormones that close off small capillaries, but Qigong does not. There is no stress response from Qigong (it actually reduces Cortisol in studies) and the level of full body circulation is even greater. Qigong noticeably improves blood circulation, digestion etc. A pleasant heat builds in the navel center bringing a quiet confidence and power within. MB: Is this life force or Qi different in each person? JP: The Qi is one unified force. Some people have more than others. On an extreme example, say a person has enough energy that they don’t need to sleep anymore. This is a very high level of Qigong. Most people need six-eight hours of sleep, thus indicating our limited energy situation. Qi can be replenished by using breathing techniques, meditation, fasting, prayer, sun bathing etc. It is the same spirit or qi that moves through each person. Unity and oneness movements will take place all over the world and they will be based around Qi. It is all the same force in different amounts.

JP: Qigong theory states the “Ocean of Qi” in the navel can never be filled. It has a vast reservoir allowing a lifetime of Qi to be stored. Only if it is blocked can there be too much energy. When spine and nervous system are out of alignment it is important to open meridians and do stretching routines. One cannot have too much qi, but it can be blocked and qigong exercises will help to open up the channels. People with abundant Qi have a grace and power about them that attracts people. New students frequently find their skin clears up and their eyes whiten. Blood circulates better helping more toxins leave the system. The benefits to having more Qi are the same as having better blood circulation. The PULSE of your heartbeat is the foundation of life, but Chinese medicine has a dozen different pulses that Western medicine has not yet discovered. When people do Qigong for the first time they are often surprised to see their fingers pulsate and fill up with blood. The warmth people feel in the navel is also from the increased blood flow. MB: You speak about euphoric “highs” that can be attained from breathing techniques. What is the value of this in practical real world terms? JP: Everyone wants to feel good. Alcohol transforms our mental state, but also destroys the liver if taken too much. Qi has no side effect except making you feel full of vitality. Its highs are beyond words. Sometimes the Qi will vibrate throughout our body in such a blissful way as to feel we are being touched by God. All without chemicals or man made products that cost money. The Qi being free, abundant, right under our nose, makes it the ultimate ally to rise above life’s obstacles. Once you get the hang of the breathing techniques there comes the ability to have a natural high anytime. Sometimes euphoria is so profound that it can erase negative emotional patterns presently going on. The ability to drop bad Qi quickly trains the student to be without heavy emotional vibrations. MB: Jeff, you also teach a lot about Food-Healing at Qi Revolution. How do specific foods help to reverse disease? Fruits, vegetables and herbs contain phytochemicals that unlock our body’s endocrine system and act as sparkplugs to the immune system. Unfortunately, many people do not get enough of them. Vegetables like bitter melon contain a phytochemical that behave similar to insulin and can help in reversing Diabetes by helping the body naturally balance its blood sugar. Grapefruits, oranges and citrus are excellent to help reverse the cancer, but the “white pith” with abundant steroidal limenoids are what is so aggressive at killing cancer cells, not the juice. Consuming the right parts of the food brings out the real medicinal effects. Eating a more alive diet increases Qi. A true holistic approach to healing will balance body, mind, and spirit. The ancient healing technique of Qigong achieves all three through expanding our energy and empowering us to take charge of our health. (Part 2 of the interview appears next month)

“Qi Revolution” comes to DANBURY, CT

5 HEALTHY HABITS To Help Prevent and Heal Chronic Inflammation by Dr. Kathryn R. Ronzo

M

uscle aches. Joint pain. Gastrointestinal discomfort. Stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. What do they all have in common? Chronic inflammation. How do we get chronic inflammation? When the body’s first line of healing refuses to turn off due to constant stress, the disturbance can be a physical, mental or emotional breakdown. Physiologically, the body’s blood vessels dilate to allow blood, immune cells, nutrients and other molecules that aid in cleaning up damaged tissues to easily access the area in need. While required to initiate the healing process, concerns arise when this process doesn’t stop, and pro-inflammatory immune cells continue to flood the body. This continual offense, or chronic inflammation, has been linked to the development of many health concerns, including arthritis, autoimmune diseases, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, gastrointestinal upset and even cardiovascular disease. But sometimes the diagnoses are 16

not always evident, including symptoms such as brain fog, congestion, fatigue, and difficulties gaining or losing weight. Pharmaceutical interventions can be used to decrease irritations, but when it comes to avoiding chronic inflammation, preventive medicine plays a huge role. Here are five beneficial tips to combat chronic inflammation naturally.

Sleep

No matter the age, sleep is a necessity. During sleep, the body goes to work repairing tissues that have undergone any micro-traumas throughout the day. If difficulty sleeping through the night or waking exhausted is a common occurrence, here are some tricks to encourage a more restful night’s sleep. A sleep routine is essential. Set a bedtime and stick to it. A set bedtime trains our bodies to get used to “powering down” for the night, making sleep come more easily. Second, stop screen time two hours before bed. Screen time at bedtime wreaks

As cliché as the saying is, you truly, “are what you eat.” Food, in the simplest term, is one of the greatest medicines on earth. Even simpler, when inflammation-causing foods are ingested, inflammation develops in the body. Increasing your anti-inflammatory food intake can help prevent the constant build-up of inflammation in the body. Some of the most common inflammatory foods are sugars, corn syrup, refined carbohydrates, heavily processed meats and cheeses, fried foods, and alcohol. These foods increase cytokine production (the inflammation messengers) and saturated fats, which elevate LDL-cholesterol levels. When this happens, inflammation balloons. Foods that are anti-inflammatory tend to contain a lot of natural antioxidants, which aid in the removal of cellular waste also known as free radicals. Dark chocolate contains natural antioxidants like resveratrol and epicatechin, and nutrients like magnesium and zinc, which help promote muscular relaxation and cellular repair. Wild-caught, cold-water fish like cod, salmon, tuna and sardines contain omega3s, EPA and DHA, which help with cognition, tissue repair and hormone production. And when we choose organic foods, we eliminate the pesticides, hormones and antibiotics that cause inflammation. These additional toxins overwhelm the liver’s detox pathways, increasing the overall physiological burden.

havoc on the body’s circadian rhythm, our internal biological clock. Affected by light, it tells the body when to be awake, sleep and eat. Computers, cell phones, tablets and TV screens all emit blue wavelengths that mimic the sun’s natural emissions. So if your body still thinks its daytime at bedtime, pineal gland functions decrease, inhibiting the secretion of melatonin, a natural sleep hormone. Without melatonin, restful sleep is difficult to achieve, and the body’s healing/repair time is shortened. Turning off our electronics two hours before bed prepares our bodies for sleep while ensuring proper melatonin production and secretion.

Mind-Body Techniques

Inflammation isn’t always due to physical trauma; it can also develop from mental/emotional trauma, like stress. Stress can trigger the inflammatory cascade as easily as a poor diet or a muscle strain. When the body encounters stress, it releases cytokines, which also help to regulate metabolism. When cytokines are released, anxiety and depression can occur along with a physiological inflammatory response in our bodies. Take control of how the body processes life and become more mindful. Meditation, journaling, breath work and coloring are some of the few mind-body techniques that help improve mindfulness while cultivating a more efficient way to process through stressful life events.

Exercise

Physical exercise is paramount, and cannot be left off the list. When it comes to inflammation, exercise aids the body on so many levels. It helps to decrease physical and mental-emotional inflammation. For those who do not already have a workout routine, incorporating just 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise a day will increase endurance, cardiovascular circulation, lymphatic drainage, cellular repair and detoxification, while also improving body fat percentages. Exercise releases endorphins that improve how people handle stress, anxiety and depression and, in turn, decreases cognitive chronic inflammation. Inflammation is an inevitable part of life, but there are many ways to reduce it naturally and keep it under control. Pick one small change to incorporate daily and slowly build from there to help fight the war against chronic inflammation. Kathryn R. Botanical medicine can be incorporated into a daily routine to help decrease inflammation. Turmeric, ginger, green tea and cinnamon are common anti-inflammatory botanicals, but new studies are emerging on hemp-based CBD oil and its positive effects on reducing inflammation. Research on the endocannabinoid system and cannabidiol have shown positive results, but still more research is needed to understand the different mechanisms of action that come into play. A 2009 study stated that cannabidiol, “increases production of eicosanoids that promote the resolution of inflammation. This differentiates these cannabinoids from cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors that suppress the synthesis of eicosanoids that promote the induction of the inflammatory process.” Another study mentioned that cannabidiol causes, “dys-regulation of cytokines productions,” halting inflammation development.

nflammation is quite the buzzword these days and there are good reasons for that. Most modern-day Western diseases are rooted in excess inflammation in the body. This may include diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune disorders, asthma, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, periodontitis, eczema, psoriasis and many other ailments. Turmeric is a buzz-worthy herb in the same conversation because the pungent root of turmeric is thought to help modulate inflammation in the body. For centuries, medicine people have known that this common culinary spice can do far more than flavor our favorite dishes. Turmeric, a close cousin to ginger, has a spicy, warm and bitter flavor. This popular herb is best known as one of the main spices in curry. One little known fact is that turmeric is also what gives bottled mustard its bright yellow color. Throughout history, turmeric has had a plethora of important uses, including extensive use as a culinary spice, healing remedy and textile dye. The part of turmeric that is used is the root, easily identified by its brown skin and a bright orange flesh. It is currently one of the most popular treatments for inflammation in modern herbalism. It dates back thousands of years in both traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as a potent anti-inflammatory. A plant with a very long history of medicinal use throughout Southeast Asia, turmeric was

NaturalNewHaven.com

used not only as a principal spice but also as a component in religious ceremonies. Because of its bright yellow color, turmeric is often referred to as “Indian saffron.” Modern medicine has begun to recognize the importance of this common herb; in fact, within the last 25 years there have been over 3,000 publications referencing turmeric. Curcumin is the primary medicinal agent in turmeric. Numerous studies have proven curcumin’s antiinflammatory effects are comparable to many pharmaceutical drugs. Unlike these drugs, which often have dangerous side effects, curcumin produces no toxicity. Although turmeric is considered warming and mildly drying, we need to consider our own individual constitution or work with a local herbalist to determine how much is right for you. Turmeric also has a long history of treating and supporting liver and gallbladder disorders. Some studies suggest that turmeric has anti-carcinogenic properties. Its bitter quality also aids in digestion.

Ways to Use Turmeric

There are numerous simple ways that we can begin to add this important spice into our lives. Cooking with it is beneficial and tasty; it can be added to egg dishes, soups, stews, stir fries and more. If chronic inflammation needs to be addressed, possibly go a step further by taking capsules, adding powdered herb in water or making

a tea with the fresh root. Both fresh and powdered turmeric can be found easily in most grocery stores, apothecaries and specialty markets. The best quality turmeric will be a magnificent bright orange; this color tells us that in addition to being a powerful anti-inflammatory, it also has antioxidant effects because it is fresher. If turmeric does not have a bright vibrant color along with a spicy and pungent smell, it may not be fresh; it may be time to replace that jar of spice. It is believed that adding a very small amount of black pepper to turmeric dramatically increases the bioavailability. This tradition stems from Ayurveda, and science has proven that the black pepper extract called piperine increases the bioavailability of curcumin by as much as 2,000 percent. Turmeric is an invaluable herb to get to know and incorporate into self-care and healing regimens. One way to ingest turmeric is with a warm cup of golden milk. This tasty and popular herbal beverage blend is a good way to add the numerous healing benefits of turmeric into our bodies.

The Spice Drawer Challenge Discover the Superpowers in Small Jars

S

by Anastasia Pryanikova

pring brings a sense of renewal and freshness and a desire to shed the layers of heavy coats and sweaters, extra pounds of sluggishness, the winter debris from the yards, and the old clutter from our homes. One little space that tends to get overlooked in the grand swirl of spring cleaning is the spice drawer. Five rows into it—if we dare to look—we may find an old plastic container with some withered and faded powder that may once have been marjoram, at least according to the label. It is also quite possible that the pumpkin spice has found a way to clone itself, and we now have a couple of identical twins with round tops waiting for the next pumpkin season. Even if a spice drawer is in a perfect order, it is worthwhile to go through its contents and toss the old items. It’s an opportunity to pick a few new herbs and spices that may better serve the evolving needs and health goals of the household. We often choose spices because we like their taste or a recipe may call for a specific blend. It might also just be a matter of traditional common use, like Italian seasoning in a pasta sauce. Spices, how20

New Haven/Middlesex

ever, offer much more than flavor. They are both “thy food” and “thy medicine.” Spice drawers can be turned into a delicious addition to our home medicine cabinets if we take into account some important considerations for buying and storing herbs and spices.

Source and Store

When purchasing herbs and spices, some factors to consider include: quality, sustainability, organic farming and fair trade. We don’t want to buy herbs that are polluted, sprayed, improperly stored, moldy or too old. We may want to protect medicinal plants that may be overharvested and endangered. In other words, it is important to trust our sources. We can grow our own herbs too. If that’s not our thing, we can check out local herb growers, herb farms and farmers markets to source herbs locally. There are many reputable organic herb suppliers online as well. What would an ideal spice drawer system look like? A good storage system should protect spices from air, heat, humidity and light to keep them fresh and potent longer. Small glass containers or

The process is simple; open that spice drawer, examine the spices and get rid of anything that is: 1. Past expiration date or clearly old. 2. Has damaged containers or is improperly stored by being exposed to too much air, heat, humidity or light. 3. Impossible to identify the contents or the expiration date. 4. Faded in color, lost its fragrance or has other signs of damage. View this task as an opportunity to learn how to identify fresh herbs from stale ones. Using spices is a sensory experience so engage the senses of vision, smell and touch while examining the herbs. Next, transfer spices worth keeping into new containers and label each container immediately. When pouring the herbs from one container to another, study their appearance and smell them. Don’t rush. Many herbalists would attest that they love sorting herbs, making herbal remedies and engaging with plants because the process feels soothing, nourishing and meditative. Remember not to breathe in hot peppers, powders and other small particles as they can irritate delicate mucous membranes. An earloop face mask can be helpful in this situation. Now that we have covered the basics of handling herbs and spices, let’s look

mason jars with air-tight lids are the best when it comes to keeping air and humidity out. The contents are also visible through the transparent glass. Glass containers will need to be stored in a dark, cool place, like a drawer or a cabinet. Metal containers with tight lids can also work well. It is better to avoid the store-bought plastic containers. We must label our spices even if we think we can recognize what is inside the container. Along with the ingredients, we want to include the expiration date or the date of purchase. Most dried herbs will lose their potency after a year of proper storage. Seeds go rancid much faster due to the higher oil content.

The Wise Sage

Sage is not just for turkeys. According to Systematic Review of Clinical Trials Assessing Pharmacological Properties of Salvia Species on Memory, reported in CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics, a single dose of sage (Salvia officinalis) extract or dried leaf is capable of increasing memory capacity and improving mood. In addition, sage moistens and nourishes dry skin and connective tissues as well as improves circulation, supports joints, muscles and tendons. A recent randomized clinical trial demonstrates that it can even reduce bacterial colony count when it is used in a mouthwash. Consider this spice an aromatic health ally.

Rosemary for Memory

This member of the mint family is another brain booster. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is warming, drying, stimulating and restorative. It increases blood flow to the brain, enhancing cognitive function and memory. In her book, Body into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic SelfCare, Maria Noel Groves reports that “in ‘seasoning’ doses of around 750mg, rosemary has been shown to improve memory recall speed in elderly patients.” Rosemary also restores the nervous system, bringing relaxation and uplifting the spirit. The volatile oils in rosemary account for its antimicrobial action. Whether in a cup of tea, a pot of soup, inside a roasted chicken or in bottle of a household disinfectant, this multi-faceted herb gets the job done.

Are You Having a Good Thyme?

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) has long been associated with the theme of courage and protection in many traditions. The Greeks

and Romans burned thyme to evoke courage as well as to purify their homes and temples. The protective nature of thyme can be attributed to its antibacterial and antioxidant actions. The primary chemical constituent of thyme, thymol, is expectorant, antispasmodic and antimicrobial, making thyme effective for chest colds, cough and congestion. It helps to break up mucus and expel it from the body. Even though we primarily use thyme as a spice for soups, sauces, meats and poultry, a cup of thyme tea can be protective in the cold and flu seasons.

The Sweet Wood

Cinnamon is a well-loved, delicious spice made from the inner bark of several tree species from the genus Cinnamomum. There are two main types of cinnamon: Ceylon, or the “true” cinnamon, and Cassia, which is comparable but less sweet. While the more common Cassia cinnamon is safe to eat in small to moderate amounts, it may cause problems in large doses due to the coumarin content, a compound that has been linked to liver toxicity in excess. Cinnamon is a powerful antioxidant. In a study of antioxidant capacity of 26 common spice extracts, cinnamon came out as a spice with the highest antioxidant capacity. Cinnamon decreases inflammation in the body. It may also cut the risk of heart disease. Studies show its capacity to lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes, as well as reduce insulin resistance and lower blood sugar. Most studies used the dose of 1 to 6 grams per day of powdered cinnamon. Try a cup of cinnamon tea after dinner to stimulate digestion and help regulate blood sugar. Small spice jars hide many superpowers, waiting to be released as we sprinkle, boil and brew. Are we ready to take on the spice drawer challenge and discover the health benefits common spices have to offer? Anastasia Pryanikova is an herbalist and certified wellness coach. community resource guide APPLIED KINESIOLOGY KC CHIROPRACTIC & WELLNESS Kevin Healy, DC 17 Woodland Road, Madison, CT 203-245-9317 KevinHealy@sbcglobal.net DrHealMe.com

Applied Kinesiology is a neurological evaluation to find and treat dysfunction. Different because it addresses causes instead of chasing pains, Dr. Healy tests if a therapy alleviates dysfunction, finding immediate answers as to which provides the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. Generally, no single cure exists as disease and dysfunction typically involve multiple areas of the body. The goal of any therapy—physical, chemical, or emotional—is to improve function; a combination of therapies typically yields the best results. See ad on page 11.
