Every year for the past 10 years or so, my New Year’s resolution has been to simplify my life—yet it has become increasingly complicated. Okay, so taking on the role of publisher of a monthly magazine was not exactly a step in the direction of greater simplicity— so many different hats to wear, and a lot of details, deadlines and changes. Adapting to change has never been one of my strong suits. But the truth is that we all live in an ever-changing and expanding universe that is very complex. Any attempt to resist or control the momentum of change is futile and will only intensify the feelings of hardship—and slow down progress. It is in our best interest to play by the rules of the universe—then, and only then will the stars align for us. My New Year's resolutions for 2018 are to embrace change and appreciate more. Not only does appreciation attract goodness into our life, but it just feels better and makes us happier. I will also work on being more present—That will take some focus, given the numerous distractions competing for my attention every day—like my iphone. While I will continue to be an activist and speak up about causes that support human, animal and planetary wellness, I will also practice being a better listener—to my own inner guidance, which I know I can always count on. Our editorial theme for this month is Vibrational Healing. Everything in our world is vibrationally-based—and we could certainly stand to raise it up a few notches these days. Speaking of Vibrational Healing! If you have never been to a sound healing concert, I encourage you to treat yourself to this delicious experience. Sound healing induces deep relaxation, opens your heart, and enhances inner peace, presence and appreciation—It doesn’t get much better than that! Sound healing is not the only modality that raises our vibration—All healthy behaviors do—eating an organic plant-based diet, getting regular exercise, meditating, eliminating toxic thoughts and conversations with others, seeing the glass half full, trying something new, serving others ... and much more. Turn the pages and read all about it. Last call to all holistic and green businesses: The deadline to reserve your space in our 2018 Natural Living Directory is January12! This stand-alone issue is a great opportunity to share your service offerings with our loyal readers, who will keep the directory as a year-round reference (see details on pages 6 and 7). Don't miss out on this! As in every issue, you will find a rich array of local events, classes, services and products in our news briefs, community calendar and ads. Have fun exploring and enjoy our great reads!

The Missing Link: Concussions and Post-Concussive Syndrome

T

here are a lot of questions surrounding concussions that will be answered by Dr. Edward C. Corsello, DC, BCAO, at the monthly meeting of Holistic Moms Network’s New Haven County chapter on January 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Milford, Connecticut. Should your child play football or soccer? What are the risks associated with other sports? What are the signs and symptoms associated with a concussion? What should you do if your child has had one? Dr. Corsello will answer all of these questions and shed light on concussions as well as current assessment and treatment options, including the breakthrough treatment that saved quarterback Jim McMahon’s life. Dr. Corsello will also bring a student-athlete who suffered from concussions and post-concussion symptoms to talk about her experience, including how to navigate the public school system with these issues. Dr. Corsello graduated magna cum laude from both the University of Tampa and Life University of Chiropractic. He then achieved a post-graduate certification in the Atlas Orthogonal technique from Sherman College. He holds a fellowship from the International Acupuncture Medical Association and is also certified in applied kinesiology, quantum neurology and active release techniques. Copper

Natural device stops a cold before it starts

New research: Copper stops colds if used early.

N

ew research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on. Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread in your airways and cause misery. But scientists have found a quick way to stop a virus. Touch it with copper. Researchers at labs and universities worldwide agree — copper is “antimicrobial.” It kills microbes, such as viruses and bacteria, just by touch. Four thousand years ago ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. Now we know why it worked so well. Researchers say a tiny electric charge in microbe cells gets short-circuited by the high conductance of copper. This destroys the cell in seconds. Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show germs die fast on copper. So some hospitals switched to copper touch surfaces, like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives. The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. When he felt a cold coming on he fashioned a smooth copper probe and rubbed it gently in his nose for 60 seconds. “It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold went away completely.” It worked

Some users say it also helps with sinuses. Attorney Donna Blight had a 2-day sinus headache. When her CopperZap arrived, she tried it. “I am shocked!” she said. “My head cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.” Some users say copper stops nighttime stuffiness if they use it just before bed. One man said, “Best sleep I’ve had in years.” Users also report success in stopping cold sores when used at the first sign of a tingle in the lip. One woman said, “I tried every product on the market over 20 years. Some helped a little, but this stopped it from happening in the first place.” The handle is sculptured to fit the hand and finely textured to improve contact. Tests show it kills harmful microbes on the fingers to help prevent the spread of illness.

again every time he felt a cold coming on. He reports he has never had a cold since. He asked relatives and friends to try it. They said it worked for them, too. So he patented CopperZap™ and put it on the market. Soon hundreds of people had tried it and given feedback. Nearly 100 percent said the copper stops their colds if used within 3 hours of the first sign. Even up to 2 days after the first sign, if they still get the cold it is milder and they feel better. Users wrote things like, “It stopped my cold right away,” and “Is it supposed to work that fast?” Pat McAllister, age 70, received one as a gift and called it “one of the best presents ever. This little jewel really works.” Sinus trouble, stuffiness, cold sores. Researchers at the Imperial College London say that five servings of fruits and vegetables is a good start, but more is better. After conducting a worldwide meta-analysis of 2 million people that compared early mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and cancer, they recommend eating at least 10 three-ounce vegetable and fruit servings per day, which could prevent up to 7.8 million premature deaths each year.

AEROBICS KEEP THE BRAIN YOUNG Simple movement turns out to be the best way to lift mood, improve memory and protect the brain against age-related cognitive decline, according to Harvard Medical School researchers in an article, “Aerobic Exercise is the Key for Your Head, Just as It is for Your Heart.” Even brisk walking or jogging for 45 minutes can alleviate depression. The Journal of Physical Therapy Science notes that aerobic workouts can help people feel less stressed by reducing levels of the body’s natural stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. 14

Healthy diet options of spinach and kale may also help keep our brains fit. In a study from the University of Illinois appearing in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 60 adults between 25 and 45 years old having higher levels of lutein, a nutrient found in green, leafy vegetables, avocados and eggs, had neural responses more on par with younger people than others of their own age. Lutein is a nutrient that the body can’t make on its own, so it must be acquired through diet. It accumulates in brain tissues and the eyes, which allows researchers to measure levels without using invasive techniques.

Hemp Oil Cuts Seizure Frequency in Half

FISH OIL TWICE WEEKLY EASES ARTHRITIS

Research from the New York University Langone Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has found that cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive extract of hemp oil, significantly reduces seizure rates in epileptics. Scientists there tested 120 children and young adults with epilepsy and found that the cannabidiol group’s number of seizures per month decreased from 12.4 to 5.9 compared to a statistically insignificant change in the placebo group.

Eating fish at least twice a week may significantly reduce the pain and swelling associated with rheumatoid arthritis,in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, creating swelling and pain. Studies have already shown the beneficial effect of fish oil supplements on rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, but a new study of 176 participants at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, found that increasing the amount of fish containing omega-3 they ate weekly as a whole food lowered their disease activity. The Arthritis Foundation estimates that about 1.5 million people in the U.S. have the disease; women far more often than men.

RED WINE LESS TOXIC THAN WHITE Alcohol has been linked with cancer in about 3.6 percent of cases worldwide, due to the presence of acetaldehyde, which damages DNA and prevents it from repairing itself. A study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention that involved 200,000 people found a distinct connection between white wine in particular and melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. Sun exposure is a well-known cancer risk, but this and other studies have found that subjects often develop melanoma primarily on the trunks of their bodies, which are usually covered by clothing, and it is almost always curable if the cancer is caught early.

Urban Trees

Cigarette Cutback Higher Prices Lower Use

Research from the Medical University of Vienna found in a 30year study that increasing prices for tobacco products by 5 percent reduced tobacco use by 3.5 percent.

Urban trees help reduce obesity and depression, improve productivity, boost educational outcomes and reduce incidences of asthma and heart disease for residents, yet according to The Nature Conservancy, American cities spend less than a third of 1 percent of municipal budgets on tree planting and maintenance. As a result, U.S. cities are losing 4 million trees per year. Each summer, thousands of unnecessary deaths result from heat waves in urban areas. Studies have shown that trees are a cost-effective solution. Too often, the presence or absence of urban nature and its associated benefits is tied to a neighborhood’s income level, resulting in dramatic health inequities. In some American cities, life expectancies in different neighborhoods located just a few miles apart can differ by as much as a decade. Not all of this health disparity is connected to the tree cover, but researchers are increasingly finding that neighborhoods with fewer trees have worse health outcomes, so inequality in access to urban nature can lead to worse health inequities.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) is advising hospitals in improving patient menus by adding healthy, plant-based options and removing processed meats, which have been linked to 60,000 cardiovascular deaths annually. The ACC Heart-Healthy Food Recommendations for Hospitals states, “At least one plant-based main dish should be offered and promoted at every meal.” ACC also urges that processed meats such as bacon, sausage, ham, hot dogs and deli meats should not be offered at all. These guidelines extend to hospital cafeterias and onsite restaurants. The American Medical Association has also passed a resolution that calls on hospitals to provide similarly healthy meals. Processed meats are now considered carcinogenic to humans, according to the World Health Organization. A 50-gram serving a day—one hot dog or two strips of bacon—increases colorectal cancer risk by 18 percent. “Too many heart disease patients have had their recovery undermined by bacon and hot dogs on their hospital trays,” says Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the nonprofit Physicians Committee. 16

Meatless Millennials

Young Vegetarians Worry Meat Industry

The 2017 Chicken Marketing Summit in North Carolina involved hundreds of leaders from fast-food chains, marketing agencies and poultry production companies discussing the fact that Americans are eating less poultry—and what to do about it. Richard Kottmeyer, a senior managing partner at Fork to Farm Advisory Services, explained that Millennials need to be “inspired and coached” to consume more animal products, according to an article published on WattAgNet.com, an industry website. “Compared to their parents, Millennials are more likely to believe in evolution and accept that climate change is occurring. They seek out facts and science to better understand a complex world, but the poultry industry doesn’t have any factbased information to defend its cruel, unsanitary practices,” states animal rights advocate Nathan Runkle via EcoWatch.com. The majority of chickens raised for meat have been bred to grow so large so quickly that they collapse under their own unnatural weight. North Carolina has enacted an “ag-gag” bill, making it illegal to photograph or videotape animal abuse.

Safer Product Controls Citrus Pests

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Department of Pest Regulation have approved CRS Plus, an aerosol pheromone biopesticide product that disrupts the mating cycle of Aonidiella aurantii, also known as California Red Scale (CRS). Pheromones do not kill or damage the target insects, and are species-specific, so pollinators and other beneficial insect species are not affected. CRS attacks all aerial parts of citrus trees, including twigs, leaves, branches and fruit. Heavy infestations can cause reduced fruit quality, yellowing and dropping of leaves, dieback of twigs and limbs and even death of the tree.

Brainwave Training for Better Health Measurable Energy Therapies Improve CNS Function by Roseann Capanna-Hodge

P

eople often assume that energy medicine therapies are hard to quantify, but some can be measured and proven scientifically. PEMF, biofeedback and neurofeedback are quantifiable scientific therapies backed by brainwave training research. These are still viewed as unconventional, however, because instead of depending on chemistry, brainwave training is a therapy that focuses on energy or physics to heal. We are primarily energetic beings. The brain is a complex organ that is made up of billions of brain cells called neurons. In order for our brain to work, these neurons communicate with each other using electricity. The combination of millions of neurons sending signals at once produces an enormous amount of electrical activity in the brain. Sensitive medical equipment, such as an EEG, can measure electricity levels over areas of the scalp. This dynamic, interconnected web of biological energy is impacted by everything in our environment. Neurofeedback provides brainwave training to our system; it focuses on our central nervous system, which directly improves the brain’s ability to self-regulate. Without self-regulation, disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) can result in anxiety, depression, headaches

and other conditions. Neurofeedback directly alters brainwave function. Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. We have different brain waves that vary based on their frequency, ranging from the low activity to high activity (delta, theta, alpha and beta). Everyone has the same brain waves, but people do not have the same pattern and levels of brain waves. Certain patterns are associated with specific conditions. Most people are born with a relatively healthy nervous system and regulated brainwave function. Genetic and environmental factors—such as diet, stress and external environment influences—can impact brain wave functioning and the CNS. This lack of self-regulation can lead to a variety of symptoms, including lack of focus, anxiety, mood issues and physical symptoms. Dysregulation reflects an under-responsive, over-responsive or unstable nervous system. Engineered brainwave training—such as neurofeedback—uses the simple concept of reinforcement to improve regulation of the brain and CNS. This brainwave-training therapy gives visual and auditory reinforcements to help the brain change its own behavior

as a form of associative learning. In neurofeedback, the associative learning is learning to perceive the feeling of the signal. By creating new electrical activity through a process of measurement and reinforcement, the brain learns to self-regulate, which calms the nervous system. This reduces or eliminates symptoms. Neurofeedback has been used to treat ADHD, autism, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, OCD, tic disorders, stress, emotional distress, behavioral or mood issues, chronic pain, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric issues associated with Lyme and PANS/PANDAS, headaches/migraines, concussions, and a variety of other issues. Almost any brain—regardless of its level of function or dysfunction—can be trained to function better. Neurofeedback can be used with all ages. ADHD often means that a person has too many slow brainwaves frontally—at theta, or a lower frequency—and not enough fast, higher frequency beta brainwaves. This brainwave imbalance makes it hard to stay focused in non-preferred areas because the brain is bored. This is why decreasing theta brainwave and increasing beta brainwave training can help people with ADHD. There are more than 3,000 peer-reviewed brainwave training research studies spanning four decades that demonstrate its effectiveness (Lubar & Shouse, 1976). Current research supports that neurofeedback improves a variety of specific issues and symptoms, from seizures to ADHD and anxiety. Recent meta-analyses document the effectiveness of neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD (Arns, de Ridder, Strehl, Breteler and Coenen, 2009) in reducing inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Research from Gani et al. (2008) demonstrates the long-term effectiveness of neurofeedback, as they found that improvements in behavior and attention were stable six months and two years after completion of therapy. Neurofeedback produces lasting changes that puts people on a path to wellness, and improves brain functioning and mental health. It works synergistically with other therapies as it focuses on regulating the CNS, which can reduce symptoms simultaneously. Neurofeedback requires time and energy commitment as teaching the brain to change often requires therapy two times a week over several months. The easy process consists of patients receiving reinforcement while watching a movie in a comfortable chair. For most, symptoms gradually decrease, while for others, change can be dramatic depending on symptoms or root issues. Individuals with CNS dysregulation should consider effective, safe and research-based therapies that work with the body’s own rhythm, such as neurofeedback, biofeedback and PEMF. Tapping into the body’s own frequencies can help reduce stress; improve sleep, mood and attention; increase processing speed; decrease pain or discomfort; and create feelings of wellness.

10,000 Steps and Counting Keep Moving to Stay Fit

W

by Kathleen Barnes

e have become a nation of couch potatoes. The average American takes only 5,900 steps a day, somewhat better than the sedentary Brits that average less than 4,000. The notion that overall we need to take 10,000 steps a day to be physically fit started with manpo-kei, a 1960s Japanese marketing tool to sell pedometers. While the 10,000 steps concept lacks specific supporting science, it’s widely acknowledged that we are healthier the more that we move. Affixing a target number to it helped spread the notion of the benefits of walking, says Catrine Tudor-Locke, Ph.D., a walking behavior researcher at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Tudor-Locke is a proponent of the walking goal, although she readily admits the real objective is to get people moving more. “Any opportunity to walk more, more frequently and farther, wherever that is—it all adds up,” she says.

Making 10,000 Steps Possible For those already physically fit and physically active, 10,000 steps is a no-brainer. However, it’s never too late to start for those with exercise programs that have been supplanted by a too-busy-toworkout lifestyle. There’s probably no easier exercise than walking, says Dr. Melina Jampolis, the Los Angeles author of The Doctor on Demand Diet. “Walking is the number one exercise I recommend to most of my patients, because it is exceptionally easy to do, requires only a supportive pair of quality sneakers and 20

NewHaven/Middlesex

NaturalNewHaven.com

has tremendous mental and physical benefits that increase just by getting outside in the fresh air.” The biggest bang for the increased effort is the first 3,000 to 4,000 steps between the sedentary baseline and 10,000 steps, Tudor-Locke explains. “Still, 10,000 steps is the magic number for the average American,” says Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio. “That specific number of steps seems to help break down insulin resistance, an underlying cause of Type 2 diabetes. We’re not exactly sure how this happens, but we know that this amount of exercise takes the glucose from the blood where it is a hazard to the cells, so that it becomes less hazardous.”

Exponential Health Benefits Many more well-documented health benefits of a walking program include: 4 increased heart health 4 lower blood pressure 4 stronger muscles 4 improved balance 4 weight control 4 natural stress relief Several studies from places like Harvard Medical School’s affiliate Brigham and Women’s Hospital also show that a brisk walking program nearly cut in half the risk of early death in breast cancer patients. Most exercise experts note that a walking pace that leaves the walker only slightly out of breath reaps the greatest rewards. “One hundred steps a minute is a good cadence,” advises Tudor-Locke. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly, or 30 minutes five days a week, for virtually everyone. Many experts don’t believe it’s necessary to move for 30 minutes straight. Ten-minute increments work fine; so a quick morning walk around the block, another outing during the lunch hour and a refreshing walk with the dog after work can do the trick. Some evidence from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion suggests that varying walking speed is even more effective in overcoming insulin resistance and burning calories.

Counting Up Roizen recommends wearing a pedometer or using a free iPhone app (no need for a fitness band), mainly to keep up awareness of our daily step count. There’s no age when we don’t need to walk anymore. If a consistent 10,000 steps does wonders for health, some ask if more would be better. “Ten thousand is the answer for health and longevity, but 12,000 or more makes a difference for fitness and calorie burning, so go for it!” Roizen says. Breathwalking Adds Benefits T

his kundalini yoga breathing technique, when combined with a brisk walking program, changes the basic rhythms of the body, even at cellular levels, according to the Kundalini Research Institute, in Santa Cruz, New Mexico. Breathwalking, a particular combination of breathing and walking, improves several brain functions, according to research the institute conducted with the University of Arizona. Breathwalking, compared to normal walking, increases executive function by as much as 80 percent and improves cognitive function, judgment and mental focus. Other findings by the institute are that breathwalking improves vision, including depth of field and clarity of detail, as well as muscle balance and heart function. “If aerobic exercise resembles the pure power of a single frequency emanating from a strong radio station, then breathwalking looks like many frequencies mixed into complex and richly textured patterns. One is a tone; the others add melody, chords and harmonies. It is like comparing loud noise to sophisticated music,” notes the organization’s website.

How to Do It Wave breath: Inhale steadily through the nose to the count of four while taking four steps, exhale through the mouth to a count of four while taking another four steps. Stair breath: Make four distinct inhalations through the nose to a count of four while taking four steps; and then exhale through the mouth in four sharp exhalations while taking another four steps. Dr. Jim Nicolai, who is affiliated with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, in Tucson, has created a helpful instructional video at Tinyurl.com/HowToBreathwalk.

UNDERSTANDING NUTRACEUTICALS

How They Differ from Health Store Supplements by Linda Sechrist

edicalized terminology is now being used to describe certain products we may already have been buying from brand-name dietary supplement companies and retailers, and they have a higher price tag. One common example: powdered protein mealreplacement shakes that can cost up to $16 more than a retail store brand, as nutraceutical and medical food purveyors want to differentiate their products as having clinical research and development behind them. This raises the bar on the quality of contents and assures consumers of third-party testing for proof of ingredients. Although both are regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, there is no legal distinction between dietary supplements and nutraceuticals, yet each serves different purposes. Dietary supplements, comprising vitamins, minerals and/

NaturalNewHaven.com

or herbs and botanicals, are intended to enhance wellness among healthy adults. Nutraceuticals encompass nutrients, foods or parts of foods used as medicine to provide health benefits beyond nutrition and combat chronic disease. Some of the most popular formulations involve botanicals like ginseng, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort and echinacea. “Medical foods, formulated for dietary management of a specific medical condition for which nutritional needs are unmet by a normal diet, are regulated under the Orphan Drug Act of 1983,” explains Bill Shaddle, senior director of medical education at Metagenics, Inc. “Our nutraceuticals and medical foods are supported by verifiable science that provides solid evidence regarding the therapeutic benefits produced by ingredients in our products.” The word nutraceutical, blending nutrition and pharmaceutics, was coined in 1989 by Stephen L. DeFelice, the founder and

chairman of the nonprofit Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, in Mountainside, New Jersey, which promotes clinical research and development of dietary supplements and foods specifically for their health benefits. Reputable companies that manufacture private-label nutraceuticals, such as Metagenics and Xymogen, among others, research and develop products for functional nutrition and quality. While such products are solely distributed through partnerships with healthcare professionals such as medical doctors, nutritionists and pharmacists, some of the evidence-based, professional-grade formulas are available through online physician websites. Metagenics and Xymogen collaborate with institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, Bastyr University and National College of Natural Medicine in conducting clinical research that demonstrates how their formulas impact healthy aging, cognitive function and overall health.

Federal Regulations Medical foods and nutraceuticals, orally administered dietary products formulated to support the management of conditions such

as compromised gut function, age-related muscle loss, metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are subject to standard food and safety labeling requirements of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Although they may be used under medical supervision, patients don’t need a prescription. Many healthcare practitioners, including dietitians, currently recommend them under a physician’s direction. Unlike pharmaceuticals, which are accountable to the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, patent-protected and supported by expensive testing documentation, nutraceuticals are not. However, many manufacturers do choose to undergo costly testing. Like all dietary supplements, the majority of which do not undergo third-party testing, they are regulated by DSHEA, which defines and regulates labeling and claims of benefits related to classic nutrient-deficiency diseases.

Private Quality Control

manufacturing process, to avoid contamination and validate ingredients, every batch is third-party assayed by an independent laboratory, whereas some companies only do this for every fifth or 20th lot. Xymogen’s validation extends to packaging and controlling the level of humidity because it affects how ingredients oxidize,” says Burdette. Gary Kracoff, a registered pharmacist and naturopathic doctor at Johnson Compounding & Wellness, in Waltham, Massachusetts, researches the nutraceuticals that he carries and recommends for his clients. “I like professional-grade nutraceuticals because their formulas are researched and science-based. They are excellent products for specific purposes. Individuals that take the medical foods come to appreciate their disease-modifying therapeutic results. While pricier, they include healthier sources of carbohydrates and fats, as well as natural, rather than synthetic nutrients to provide what the body needs to return to a state of balance,” says Kracoff.

Xymogen is strictly a physician’s line of nutraceuticals, explains Cheryl Burdette, a doctor of naturopathy and director of clinical research and outreach for the company. “In our

Healthy Weight Kids Food Choices that Prevent Obesity by Amber Lanier Nagle

Small changes in daily eating routines translate into healthier weight for America’s kids.

I

n 2010, President Obama and Michelle Obama launched Let’s Move! as their signature initiative to tackle epidemic levels of U.S. childhood obesity. While modest progress has been made, it remains a public health crisis. A brief by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the obesity rate remained fairly stable at nearly 17 percent between 2011 and 2014 for children 2 to 19 years old. Caused mainly by inadequate physical activity, unhealthy diets and rare genetic factors, obesity increases the risk of significant health problems, including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, plus joint and breathing issues. “We must launch our own family anti-obesity campaigns,” urges pediatrician Ricardo Riesco, co-owner of Peds Care, in Dalton, Georgia. “Along with increasing activity levels, we can encourage healthier eating habits at home and lead by example.” 24

NewHaven/Middlesex

Portions Matter

In today’s “supersize-me” climate, teaching youngsters about appropriate portion sizes is imperative in fostering healthy eating habits. “It’s often hard for parents to find time to cook a meal at home,” Riesco acknowledges. “Too often, parents will pick up fast food for dinner, which is typically higher in calories and fat, plus the portion sizes are far too large.” When parents can’t prepare a meal from scratch, a frozen, boxed meal can be a better alternative than fast food. “The portions are more appropriate, so there’s more control of how much a child eats.” Tasty frozen organic meals are now available at many grocers.

Rethinking Family Plates “A large part of the obesity problem stems from children consuming sodas and refined, processed, junk and fried foods,” says Daemon “Dr. Dae” Jones, a Washington, D.C., naturopathic physician and author of Eat More Plants. “They are low in

NaturalNewHaven.com

Breakfast provides fuel for the body and helps young minds concentrate and learn, so experts warn against skipping or skimping on it. “I tell parents to, ‘Get out of the box,’” says Doctor of Naturopathy JoAnn Yanez, executive director of the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges. “Offer them a balance of fats, proteins and complex carbohydrates.” She suggests making a batch of pancakes using an extra egg or almond meal for protein, served with fresh fruit and nitrate-free sausage. “I also recommend steel cut oats,” she says. “I make them in advance, and in the morning add in all sorts of good stuff such as fresh fruit, almond meal and almond milk.” “Although almost everything can be enjoyed in moderation, decreasing or eliminating high-calorie, high-fat, lownutrient treats can also help children develop healthy eating habits for life and prevent obesity,” says Registered Dietitian Wendy Palmer, manager of child wellness and a certified health education specialist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “A medium-sized apple or banana, or a cup of baby carrots with hummus, is a nutrientrich snack for kids. Avoid snacks that have no nutritional value or are coated in sugar.” For more good ideas, see Tinyurl.com/ HealthySnackingOptions.

No Sugary Drinks “There’s a strong correlation between sugary drinks and overweight, obese children,” observes Palmer. “I recommend that parents remove all sugary sodas, sports drinks and juice boxes from their children’s diets. Water and unsweetened seltzer water are great alternatives.”

Palmer notes that many eating patterns are set before a child turns 3, so limiting all sugary drinks, including juices, is an important component of teaching young children healthier eating habits that will last a lifetime. Studies suggest a strong link between obese children and obese adults, so for parents concerned that their child’s cute baby fat has turned into something more, the time to act is now.

Healing Through Vibration

Wouldn't It Be Nice to Feel Great All of the Time? by Greg Madden

B

ack in 1966, “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys—an anthem of our youth—was the “vibe” of the times. The saying is common today but the meaning of vibrations for the Baby Boomer generation and their families is quite different now. The goal is still to be on the good side of the vibration ledger but when the “vibes” turn bad, it’s time to find a tuning mechanism to return us to health by resonating with the innate intelligence of the body. For thousands of years, before the hospitals and medications of today, homo sapiens falling out of healthy energetic balance and alignment turned to ancient methods of healing. Now it appears we 26

NewHaven/Middlesex

are returning to the ancient arts to heal ourselves and our families. When the body falls into a state of disharmony or chaos instead of vibrating harmoniously and in a coherent state, we are out of balance. Pythagoras—known as the father of mathematics, geometry, music, harmonics and philosophy—discovered that we can assist the healing process by introducing sound and harmonic frequencies to the body. This would balance it and return it to an optimal state. That is how music as medicine was born. Pythagoras’ music principle of layered consonant intervals, spacing and harmonic ratios was designed to bring order to chaos and discord, which initiated a specific healing effect. This would allow

NaturalNewHaven.com

alignment of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Vibrational healing has been relied on for centuries to not only alleviate the symptoms of the malady, but to also find the root cause of the illness, which can often be emotional. This allows the energy, called qi or chi, to once again flow and power the cells in the particular part of the body to reset into healing mode. One of the reasons for new interest in this process may be the lack of side effects, even though some individuals experience a herxheimer reaction while they rebalance with the proper vibrational frequency. This shows that the healing process has begun and it will subside in a short while.

It is not always easy to align this process with those searching for healing while still clinging to beliefs which question the efficacy of the method. The good news is there is an increasing amount of science and data available to support these methods, especially those developed in the quantum field. The simple explanation is that because everything vibrates at an assigned frequency and is a mathematical equation, determining the proper healing codes can correct the illness immediately. Applied in this manner, vibrational healing can be the quickest road to wellness. It is important to note that the field of vibrational healing lives in an interchangeable world where the terms energy and frequency are often used to describe similar events. Albert Einstein stated, “Everything in life is vibration.” From that we have learned, even illnesses have their own vibration and frequencies. It was determined that this was the key to finding wellness, but in most unaccustomed ways. Einstein also had his challenges in explaining how electricity works for those who couldn’t see it but in time understood its power. Vibration has a home in the 12 universal laws, which says, “Everything in the universe moves, vibrates and travels in circular patterns. The same principles of vibration in the physical world apply to our thoughts, feelings, desires and wills in the etheric world. Each sound, thing and every thought has its own vibrational frequency, unique to itself. These vibrations

Vibrational healing has been relied on for centuries to not only alleviate the symptoms of the malady, but to also find the root cause of the illness, which can often be emotional.

offer a roadmap to returning one to health.” The origins or history of vibrational healing are as varied as the modalities themselves. As a global community, the wellness methods and secrets of ancient cultures have landed here in America from India, the Far East and Egypt. When our bodies have become worn down and sick, it is because there are energetic blockages and imbalances in our glands, organs and systems. This can be the result of many factors, such as toxins, environment, stress and anxiety. Adjusting these vibrational trouble spots starts at the cellular level where the cells have lost the required energy they need to heal your body. Once corrected, these cells will return the body to better health, as they are designed to do. There are many proven and some newer methodologies in the areas of vibrational healing. The most common are sound, light, color, aroma, Reiki, acupuncture, massage, flower essences, water, kinesiology, homeopathy, radionics, crystals, and even intuition through thought. The higher the body’s vibration, the better our health, according to Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology, who built the first frequency monitor to measure human vibration. He determined that the average healthy frequency of the human body was between 62-72 Hz. When frequency drops below those levels, the immune system becomes compromised. He further found that colds and flu start at 57-60 Hz, disease at 58 Hz and cancer at 42 Hz. Sound is perhaps the most enjoyable methodology for us all to take part in, as is the warmth and power vibration that comes from the light source healing properties of the sun. The Beach Boys combined the two, along with water through surfing, and their music makes us happier with better “vibes” and higher vibrations. Many cultures incorporated singing and chanting in healing processes by vibrating the vocal cords. Next, many discovered or invented other objects to initiate healing vibration and energy, including tuning forks, gongs, didgeridoos, sound bowls, binaural beats, and various types of drums and musical instruments. This category

The higher the body’s vibration, the better our health, according to Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology, who built the first frequency monitor to measure human vibration. also includes essential oils and flower essence; they help to raise our vibration out of the frequencies where illness lives. With more scientific means of measurement and technological advancements, there are many new devices that play in this arena. These are additions to ancient healing practices that marry the wisdom of the past to newer delivery models of today. As always, due diligence is encouraged as the body is the finest healing device ever developed; vibrational healing intent should be to assist our own process by removing energetic blockages that starve the body and its life-affording energy. Some popular devices are the Rife Frequency Generator multiwave oscillator, Chiren/biophoton light therapy, scalar wave technology, BEMER mats, aura imaging and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), to name a few. Vibration, like so many things, has mirror and yin/yang energy; it can heal or harm through thought and intent as proven through Dr. Masaru Emoto’s study of how thoughts directly impact on our environment. His work with water crystals proved that positive energy produced desired results while negative thought or intent produced ugly outcomes. Sound is the Music of Healing Enduring Medicine Carries Us into the Future by Jennifer Aurelia “Music is the celestial sound, and it is sound that controls the whole universe, not atomic vibrations. Sound energy, sound power, is much, much greater than any other power in the world.” ~ Swami Satchidananda

W

hat makes sound and music so extraordinary? It could be the exquisite combination of vibration, resonance and frequency. Everything is in vibration—including the trees, our food, cars, the earth—everything is energy. Frequency and density go hand in hand. For example, the higher the frequency, the less dense and, quite possibly, the purer the matter; the reverse is also true. A state of bliss is a much higher vibration than anger. Since bliss and love carry much less resistance, they can naturally float above the lower vibrational emotions like anger and fear. What is it

about music and sound that possess this extraordinary power to move us, give us chills, assist us in our path to wholeness and touch the divine? Modern medicine can now measure, and thus confirm, the effectiveness of sound as a means to promote healing. Sound is a type of energy medicine that has the ability to move and clear energy in our physical, spiritual and emotional bodies; it can create the sacred space in which the body can heal from pain, stress disorders, depression, emotional roller coasters and more. Mitchell Gaynor, MD, a New York oncologist and clinical professor of medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, used sound healing practices since the early 1990s. “Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: it may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more

homeostatically; it may calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, which in turn help to regulate the immune system— the healer within,” he said. Notice feelings when we listen to different types of music. Become aware of the way the body reacts to Bach or Mozart, pop, rock, rap or even jazz. Does the body relax or constrict? How does the mind respond to the musical or sound stimuli? Our organs, energy centers and auric field resonate to their own frequency; because our body is our sacred temple, it responds in accordance to our innermost thoughts and feelings. And when those frequencies become out of balance or out of tune, they often reflect in our physical and mental health and well-being. When we are in a state of alignment with ourselves or our highest truth and in a state of flow, our

According to sound healing pioneer Jonathan Goldman, “When we are in a state of health, we’re like an extraordinary orchestra that’s playing a wonderful symphony of the self. But what happens if the second violin player loses her sheet music? She begins to play out of tune, and pretty soon the entire string section sounds bad. Pretty soon, in fact, the entire orchestra is off. This is a metaphor for disease.” If we consider lyrics, they are not only words, but words with the power of emotion behind them. Words have a specific vibration as does each letter. The work of the Japanese researcher Dr. Masuru Emoto and his “Messages from Water,” support this theory. In his work, the team attached words to glasses filled with water and froze them. Pictures of the water molecules were taken before and after the glasses were frozen. The findings were amazing. The water molecules in the glass with the words love and gratitude attached were shaped like the most beautiful symmetrical snowflakes. The water glasses containing words such as hate and anger housed crystals that were conceivably unrecognizable malformations with not a single ounce of symmetry. Every thought and every word is, in itself, a facet of sound and has an exact pitch, an exact frequency (or a cycle) that resonates with perfection. A blade of grass, for example, resonates at the frequency 528hz (or cycles), the same frequency that

is used for DNA repair by scientists, which also corresponds to a pitch. Sounds that are of optimal benefit to us most likely have a healing influence upon the body because they influence the geometric patterns and organization of cells and living systems. The beauty of sound is that it is powerful and multifaceted and yet simple. Sound can be used to heal on a deep cellular level. Vibrational and sound healing techniques are widely offered and effective through the concept of resonance and entrainment. During our waking state, the normal frequency of our brain waves is that of beta. Sound tools entrain the brain to move into the deeper alpha and theta brain wave frequencies, which are the frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states, clarity of mind and intuition. Entrainment is when the dominant vibration of one tone or frequency changes the less dominant one. Sound or sonic entrainment has been used by medicine men and women, and shamans from different cultures since prehistoric days. The ability to create altered states of consciousness through drumming, chanting and music is probably as old as music itself. According to Jeanne Achterberg in her book, Imagery in Healing, that analysis of shamanic drumming encompasses a frequency range of from 0.8 to 5.0hz or cycles per second, which she refers to as “theta driving capacity.” Tibetan Singing bowls, bells (tingshas), Peruvian whistles and gongs

have been used by their respective cultures for centuries. One of the most powerful, yet sometimes overlooked instruments for healing is the human voice. The voice is most powerful because it can transmit intention far more directly than through an instrument alone. It is a healing tool that is divinely individual and exists within us all. The human voice contains tones and overtones that can work the physical and subtle energy bodies. Electronic instruments and machines do not have the full spectrum of harmonics, and are therefore limited in their therapeutic potential. Toning, chanting and vocalizing mantras are ways to use the voice in a group or alone. Group chanting has been described as lifechanging or spiritually profound by those experiencing it for the first time. Even in cases where there has been no personal participation, the energies raised during chanting will affect all present. Through the regular use of sound plus intention, we have the ability to shift the vibration, thus creating a path to wholeness for ourselves and on our planet. “In the beginning there was the Word.” The “Word” quite clearly refers to sound as it is the primal energy which is the “Godforce” or creative force of the universe. In the Hindu tradition, the word “aim” or “om” was the sound that initiated the Creation. And the big bang theory? According to scientists and physicists, it was actually an extraordinarily deep subatomic note, much slower and deeper than anything that could be heard. No matter what school of thought we resonate with, we have come full circle. Everything is vibration. Everything is sound. So let us raise our vibration and sound together, and let us sing with and for our New Earth. CONSCIOUS AWARENESS

Raising Our Energy Vibration for Positive Reality Creation by Cathy Stubbs

I

t has been proven in the Western world decades ago that the mind and body are intimately connected, and emotion and thought impact the body. A number of scientists have highlighted this connection, including Candace Pert, PhD in Molecules of Emotion (1994) and James L. Oschman in Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis (2000). But the importance of how emotion and thought affect our physicality, health and well-being has been slow to take hold. The ancient art of shamanic energy medicine is one type of energy medicine. Shamans are well aware of our energetic basis; how we create our own reality by dreaming it into being; and how interconnected human beings are with nature, spirit and each other. Shamanic energy medicine helps us return to health and wholeness by releasing deeply held emotions from the physical body and its energetic fields, and by restoring one to full “being-ness.” We have learned how to stay silent, ignore our feelings and push them away. But where is “away?" It is into us, into the body, 30

organs and subconscious; when there is no longer room there, we push into the unconscious and then the collective unconscious. We do affect humanity by how we handle our emotional-thought content. Many people are familiar with one law of the universe, which says “like attracts like.” It refers to our vibration of energy, or resonance; our thought-emotion content determines a vibration of energy, and that vibration then acts as an attractor out in the world. So anger attracts anger, happiness attracts happiness and so on. We are our emotions, we wear them and we are defined by them. We create our own reality through our desires, imagination and expectations. When our psyche is weighted down by layers of fear, pain, anger and other emotions, our imagination decreases, desire is lowered and expectations altered. In powerful emotional moments as we were growing up, we made choices and decisions about ourselves that may have limited us for life. We need to discover hidden beliefs about ourselves and agreements we made in childhood in order to feel safe. One

example is, “I am insignificant.” What kind of life can this person dream of with that belief on board? How does that person attract love? The emotions of very low vibration are fear, jealousy and envy, blame, revenge (violence and hatred), loneliness, hopelessness, and despair. Mid-range emotions with a higher vibration but still self-limiting are anger, guilt and sadness, self pity, worry and doubt, frustration, confusion, and boredom. High vibration emotions are well-being, optimism, thrill and enthusiasm, trust, passion and compassion, happiness, joy, and love. Developing conscious awareness of our state of thoughtemotions and processing through them can help to handle them in the moment or shortly thereafter. An important question to consider is why we are feeling this. Often that first feeling of anger is hiding a fear of what will happen. Energy medicine helps to shift and move out buried emotions, and release imprints of automatic behaviors. It also aids in exposing early established beliefs and contracts about ourselves, and bringing back the parts of self we blocked by trying to be safe. Many of us have heard those who had a traumatic experience mention later that they are not the same person or no longer feel like themselves. Energy medicine helps release the emotions of traumatic experiences so they feel distant and more matter of fact. Releasing constricted emotions from the body helps us leave additional space to feel more love, happiness and joy. When we love our own self unconditionally and with compassion, we have more love and compassion to give to others and to humanity. Experiencing the higher emotions raises our vibration. Living consciously is a joyful way to live life, accepting responsibility for our own emotion and thoughts. Having respect for our emotions—and using circumspection and inspection to better understand them—enables us to make needed changes, and grow and evolve to lead happy, healthy, loving lives. Energy Begets Resonance and Consciousness Individual Alignment Creates Collective Elevation

A

by Sarah Rotella

ll is energy before it is matter. Cutting-edge quantum physics states that all matter consists of tiny fields of vibrating energy, expanding into frequencies, waves, sound and light. Much of this is undetectable. Thoughts are electrical while emotions are magnetic. Electrical activity is life. Understanding this, every action that is taken has a ripple effect. Our perception of the world and of reality is based on electrical impulses. Tuning into our own frequencies to increase harmony is of the utmost importance to our healing and creating resonance in daily existence, and coherence in the collective consciousness. The more committed we each are as individuals to the pursuit of our innate higher, truer self, the more empowered all will become to create a new reality. This is an alchemical 32

process grounded in the sciences. Increasing amounts of scientific evidence now support the fields of energy and consciousness. From quantum physicists to practitioners of the metaphysical arts, confirmations abound. Dr. Bruno Chikly, an osteopathic physician at the Arizonabased Chikly Health Institute, collaborated on “Primo Vascular System: A Unique Human Biological System Shifting Medical Paradigm,” an article that was published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. The facts presented affirm newly discovered tissue as having electrical activity, biophotons and regenerative DNA. This scientific evidence further supports practitioners using osteopathic principles and other energy practitioners. Biophoton science states that, “Light is life.” It has scientifically been proven that

every cell in the body emits more than 100,000 light impulses, or photons, per second. Other clinical assessments include Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis by Dr. James L. Oschman and The Resonance Effect by Dr. Carolyn McMakin of Frequency Specific Microccurent (FSM). Her 20-year clinical studies have provided numerous published papers to prove the efficacy of FSM, such as reduced inflammation, tissue regeneration and increased adenosine triphosphate. There are also lasers, far and near infrared technology, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) technology, light therapies, sound vibration, the power of the word and more. Articles on consciousness and scientific studies are available at physicist Nassim Haramein’s Resonance Science

The truth about sacred geometry and the alchemical processes have always been with us; the new observation of how we are creating a new reality is at hand. And that means we cannot speak about energy, frequency, resonance and consciousness without discussing the heart. The HeartMath Institute has published studies that show the largest field measured in our human energy system is the field of the heart. Inspired by the information, how do we begin our journey and what are practical applications? The reality is that many people are in some level of the reactive, fight-flight-freeze response. Bringing these subconscious and biochemical reactions to the surface in order to dissipate the cycle is key to addressing the core issues at hand. Being aware of not being aligned physically, emotionally and spiritually often causes an individual to seek help. The system needs to be unburdened while simultaneously being supported to regenerate and thrive. Expert facilitation along with supportive guidance in nutrition, movement, meditation and energy medicine technology applications can help. The law of nature provides us with understanding of this amazing physical vehicle the soul resides in. We are all empowered with the divine creative right of aligned free will. The Way to a Conscious Divorce

G

by Loren Costantini

oing through a traditional divorce is highly emotional, extremely stressful and ridiculously expensive. It is a major life transition for the entire family. And, like any transformative event, it isn’t easy. During these times of transition, humans are emotionally fragile. People of divorce don’t need to be injected into an adversarial battlefield. They need support and guidance. Our traditional family law system is, by definition, adversarial. It is invasive, expensive and filled with pitfalls. There is a much healthier way to approach a divorce. It begins with the way we understand it. We need to stop seeing divorce as a battle, but rather as a family in crisis and transition. We need understanding and awareness that individuals and families are emotionally vulnerable during this transition. We are susceptible to friends, family, television and attorneys advising us to fight for our rights. While this advice may seem right, it only encourages a mindset of a victim looking for vengeance or sympathy. This mindset must change from conflict to resolving issues from a heart-centered approach. Being upset and angry is natural, but those emotions can help us recognize where we need to let go of misunderstandings. They are not there to justify the fight. Divorce is not about wrong. There is no right and wrong, just different perspectives. Two spouses see things differently, and

34

that’s why they are getting a divorce. When considering a divorce, good advice should sound more like this: n Seek peaceful alternatives to disagreements with solutions that are aligned with both perspectives. Release attachments to limited ideas of blame and punishment. Keep the ego in check. Practice listening. The answers we seek already exist and will present themselves once we let go of our old way of thinking and open ourselves to higher possibilities. n Visualize and focus on positive outcomes and solutions. Let go of ideas of morality and justice. This is about us as individuals, our families and our future, not proving a point. Trust inner knowing and be committed to peaceful resolutions. Be generous as the more we give, the more we will receive. Be kind to ourselves and others. Practice every day to let go of conflict and the peace we achieve will be reflected around us. n Focus on the redefinition of the family and the division of the major responsibilities, such as raising children. Remove the idea of “sole custody” and understand that the best interest of a child includes all family members. A legal battle over custody is very expensive and exposes each spouse and, more importantly,

We need to stop seeing divorce as a battle, but rather as a family in crisis and transition. We need understanding and awareness that individuals and families are emotionally vulnerable during this transition. the children to the microscope of the court. The quantity of time with children is far less important than the quality of the time we spend with them. Sometimes accepting the situation, letting go of the fight, and making the most out of the limited time to create memories and simply love them is the healthiest solution. n Time away from children should be embraced as time to heal and re-create ourselves. Taking care of us as individuals is one of the best ways to care for our children. When we battle over children, we place their future in the hands of the court. The parents know what is best for them, not complete strangers. Find respect for a spouse as a parent of the children, even if they think differently. Set an example of integrity by not bad mouthing a spouse. If we can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all. Or we can challenge ourselves by replacing negative thoughts or statements with positive ones. Teach empathy and compassion to children by example. Redirect the money saved by not going to court to a good therapist for everyone in the family to help through the transition, begin healing and create a new life. Practically speaking, placing a divorce in the hands of our legal system will not serve our best interests. Private, emotional family issues are not meant to be decided by a public adversarial system. Attorneys are trained to be adversarial and to be counselors of law, not counselors at law. If issues cannot be solved without help, seek support from a therapist and a mediator as a legal guide. The mediator should be a seasoned family lawyer. Trust that an experienced family law attorney can generally predict the outcome of a case. Use that educated advice as a guideline for solving differences. If representation is ultimately needed or decided upon, seek an attorney that provides information, different perspectives and alternative solutions. Leave the lawyer’s office feeling educated, empowered and more focused on resolution. Divorce doesn’t have to be a nasty word or process. It is a challenging time of major change in the lives of a couple and family. Ultimately, the choice is ours. Peaceful resolution as the result can be the most advantageous for the family. An HR Director looking for ways to increase staff health, productivity and satisfaction?

JOIN A Natural Awakenings

ccording to a Pew Forum study, nearly 80 percent of Americans believe in miracles. When we think we can’t handle burdensome difficulties on our own, we often seek help from a higher power, pleading: Cure me or my loved one of this illness. Aid me in providing for myself and my family. Bring me someone to love. Help me resolve this intensely painful situation. Protect loved ones from the harm they’re subjecting themselves to. If we want miracles to unfold in our lives, we must actively participate in their manifestation. Here are five ways to manifest more miracles in our lives.

1

Be Grateful for Everything

Gratitude deserves its positive buzz. When we’re grateful, our energy changes and our light shines. Our perspective shifts from scarcity to abundance. We bring forth divine blessings by being tuned into the giving nature of the creator of all. When we live in a state of gratitude, good people, opportunities and blessings arrive.

2

Stop Using Excuses to Do Nothing

When we take a positive step in our lives—it can be anything—a way forward will often appear that may be unrelated to the blessing we receive. For example, clearing out clutter may clarify a career move. Taking a course to build a new skill may introduce us to a new friend. In beginning a new exercise routine, we may discover self-confidence in other areas of life.

3

Step Beyond Routine

Step out of routines, broaden horizons and bust through comfort zones. Bumps and bruises may occur, but bravery is rewarded. Miracles are not beyond our grasp, but we may need to extend our reach in ways we’ve never done before.

4

Help Others Receive the Miracles They Pray For

Experience the bliss of being a giver. Share what others need. Sponsor a child’s education. Give unused belongings to people that desperately need them. Offer words of encouragement. It all matters more than we realize.

5

Trust Intuition

When we listen to our intellect instead of our inner heart-and-soul guidance system, we get turned around and off course. We all have an inner knowing that can help us get where we want to go. Divine wisdom always trumps the human mind. When we tune into it and trust what it’s telling us, we invite miracles into our lives. We all have the power to participate in creating miracles for ourselves and others by bringing to fruition what did not seem remotely possible. It’s easy to start by practicing these five miracle-creating strategies. J. Marie Novak is an author, life transformation mentor and founder of the Believe and Create online community. Five Ways to Manifest Our Desires

Steven Ellingson/Bigstock.com

Common issues that can be helped include difficulty conceiving, depression, pain and dependence on painkillers, inadequate sleep, numbness and tingling, sinus infections, digestion challenges, and breathing problems, among others.

HARDWIRED TO HEAL Chiropractic Care Restores Body to Optimal Function

E

by Dr. Peter J. Braglia

very cell in your body is hardwired to be healthy. When we go to a chiropractor, it is more than joint mobilization, or what many call “back cracking.” The main reason we should be receiving a chiropractic adjustment is to relieve pressure on our nerve system; this is critical because it controls and coordinates every aspect of the body. The human body has self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms. We are designed to function, heal and re-create from the inside out as the body works to maintain a balanced functioning state. For example, it strives to actively keep our blood pressure, blood sugar and heart rate within a normal range. This requires that millions of messages be transported from the brain down the spine, and then out to the organs, tissues and cells. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to clear any interference in that pathway. Common issues that can be helped include difficulty conceiving, depression, pain and dependence on painkillers, inadequate sleep, numbness and tingling, sinus infections, digestion challenges, and

breathing problems, among others. This doesn’t happen by “cracking a back” but rather when pressure comes off the central nervous system and the body is again able to heal itself. Unfortunately, it seems the expectation in America is that we are supposed to be sick, and that there is always a solution—usually found in a bottle. This belief system is crumbling. Reactive health care is failing; we are seeing more degenerative disease—such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis—than ever before. We must be proactive and optimize our health so we too don’t follow that path. Research tells us that genetics accounts for only about one-third of how long and well we live; the rest is under our control. In other words, our state of health is a result of how much we do to be healthy. Health is built by our daily lifestyle choices. Our health conditions are the culmination of the body’s inability to adapt to the stressors placed upon it on a regular basis. When we come to this realization, it leaves us with two choices: remove the stress or increase the body’s ability to adapt to it.

Chiropractic care can help with the latter. Stressors cause spinal shifts within the inner framework of the body, thereby impairing or impeding our body’s self-healing forces. This structural imbalance leads to an impaired nervous system, which can reduce immune function, concentration, and recovery from illness and injury. It could lessen athletic performance, digestive function and even alter behavior. When we look at the nervous system, any structural imbalance that occurs becomes part of our pattern as time passes. If this cartilage system is shifted, altered or distorted, it creates an inhibition or interference in the neurological system. That pattern becomes ours as we get older, and it’s much more difficult to correct or to set right. The goal in a chiropractic office is to maintain the integrity of the spine and nervous system, and the earlier we start, the better. Instead of focusing on the health lost, deterioration created, energy decrease, immune system suppression and other negative effects of nerve interference, focus on the untapped potential for health and vitality available to the body through chiropractic care. communityresourceguide APPLIED KINESIOLOGY KC CHIROPRACTIC & WELLNESS Kevin Healy, DC 17 Woodland Road, Madison, CT 203-245-9317 KevinHealy@sbcglobal.net DrHealMe.com

Applied Kinesiology is a neurological evaluation to find and treat dysfunction. Different because it addresses causes instead of chasing pains, Dr. Healy tests if a therapy alleviates dysfunction, finding immediate answers as to which provides the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. Generally, no single cure exists as disease and dysfunction typically involve multiple areas of the body. The goal of any therapy—physical, chemical, or emotional—is to improve function; a combination of therapies typically yields the best results. See ad on page 19.
