There is a saying that “August is like the Sunday of summer,” which feels so true, particularly in contrast to the intense Yang energy of July. While the days in August may remain hot throughout most of the month, they will become noticeably shorter. For me, the calmer energy brings some relief and greater focus mixed with a touch of melancholy, as I anticipate the inevitable arrival of winter and its stillness. One of the highest points of August is the CT Open, which is such an upbeat way to end the summer. We are in our 10th year of sponsoring this week-long event. Check out the details of the Open in our News Brief section on page 6. Pat Heavren, author of “Magic in Plain Sight, When Acceptance is the Healing,” shares her beautiful insights about the transitional month of August in her eloquently written piece: “August: Bright Light? Less Light? Or Glimmering Moments Between?” I was quite moved when I read her article, as her message about darkness is one of enlightenment (pardon the oxymoron). As you will read in Heavren’s article, we live in a culture that has become obsessed with the use of bright light—on many levels, creating an imbalance for humanity and our planet. We have included great reads on the topics of Soulful Parenting and Generational Healing in this month’s issue. Since we had an abundance of editorial submissions and limited print space, we have posted four additional online articles featuring the topic of Soulful Parenting, which you can read on the “Articles” page of our website: NaturalNewHaven.com. These articles offer insights and helpful tips on: calming the anxious child; supporting highly sensitive children; fostering children’s inner guidance and how family patterns affect our parenting. Happy end of summer ... I hope to see you at the CT Open!

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless—and hot. It is curiously silent too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.” ~Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

Wine Tasting Celebration on the Connecticut Shoreline
T
he annual Shoreline Wine Festival will be held August 11 (noon-7 p.m.) and 12 (noon6 p.m.). This is the 12-year anniversary for the festival, bringing in thousands of visitors over the course of the weekend. The Shoreline Wine Festival will celebrate fine wines—from grape wines to fruit wines—from Connecticut wineries and vineyards, paired with some of the area’s finest foods. All this is with a farm orchard backdrop setting and tasteful background music sound to set the mood. The festival is hosted and sponsored by Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market and Winery in Guilford, Connecticut. This year’s festival has brought in over $30,000 in sponsorships with Bishop’s Orchards Winery, Clinton Crossing, Foxon Soda, Mosaic, Proforma, Miranda Creative, WFSB/CBS, Shore Publishing, Old Amsterdam, Outfront Media and Becker’s Jewelers. One of the many benefits for attendees is that all wines that are sampled by the vineyards at the festival are available for sale that weekend to take home with you. This is something that many festivals do not and cannot offer. This two-day festival is a ticketed event that affords you the opportunity to taste the wines from all of the wineries, enjoy a tour of the Bishop’s Orchards Winery, live music and entertainment, and a chance to visit with local vendors and artisans. Food at the event is from an eclectic food truck line, at an additional charge.

Conversations with Ria Baeck at The Graduate Institute
T
he Graduate Institute (TGI) is working to build an ongoing learning community to explore emerging themes in holistic thinking, health and healing, consciousness, transpersonal psychology, and organizational leadership. This summer, they are happy to announce that Ria Baeck will be offering a public event on the Ria Baeck emerging field of collective consciousness. Join Baeck at TGI on August 4 and share your vision for new kinds of organizations and new kinds of communities, where people engage in deep authentic participation to build the world we know in our hearts is possible. On Saturday and Sunday, TGI will be hosting a workshop with Ria: Saturday focuses on collective presencing, Sunday on collective
creativity and the emergent future. The events will be on August 3 from 7-9 p.m. for $45, August 4 and August 5 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. for $90 each days. There is a TGI alumni discount; signing up for Saturday and Sunday enables you to attend Friday evening for free. There is a group rate for four participants for the price of three. Baeck’s work identifies the stages of collective consciousness that unfold as communities of practice enter into deeper engagement with each other in dialogue, interaction, transparency and intimacy. Some of this has to do with reclaiming our capacity to be in communion with other people. Ria Baeck holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology, founded Vitis, and is a coach and mentor. She is also trained in systemic and organizational constellations. To register and for more information, visit Learn.edu/CollectivePresencing. See ad on page 15.

At this time of year, every week there seems to either be an event, a holiday or even a planned trip during which acid reflux really needs to stay in check. Just because we have a celebration or vacation of some sort doesn’t mean we can forget about our health. When we take care of our health, all the festivity is remembered with positive thoughts, rather than, “It was a great event, but I felt so sick afterward from my heartburn.” August for many people is a time for vacation. It’s the end of summer and many couples, families and friends want to get their last bit of time off before schools start and the new fiscal year begins. Vacations should be about de-stressing. Stress is a significant factor in acid reflux. While stress doesn’t necessarily cause gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it exacerbates it. Stress can affect gut functions, and people who suffer from a lot of anxiety find it to be a common trigger. So how can we make vacations less anxiety-ridden? Try making a packing list in advance, which reduces worry about forgetting things on the trip. For instance, if you’ll be traveling by plane, do you have travel-size toiletries? Have you changed some currency if you are going out of the country? Do you have the right travel apps downloaded? Have you arranged for pet care in advance? Vacations often mean changed eating patterns, including eating later so you can get a full day of activities in. A good tip to keep in mind is not lie down for at least 2-3 hours after eating. To help reduce stress, learn how to meditate, even if it’s for just 5-10 minutes daily. Put on your headset and listen to your favorite songs. Get a book from your must-read pile and get lost in the adventure. These are just some suggestions to help you enjoy your vacation as stress-free as possible, and ease your GERD woes. Susan Berman, Med, CHHC, works with health conscious individuals to help heal their acid reflux or GERD. Connect at 860-670-4152, Susan@HealingAcidReflux.com or HealingAcidReflux.com. What is Human Growth Hormone? Human growth hormone (HGH) has received a great deal of press. With that comes questions. Is it legal? What exactly does it do? HGH is a single chain peptide hormone produced from the pituitary gland, the master gland in the body. This is the hormone that helps us grow throughout our childhood. It is at its peak around the age of 20; it then begins to plummet around the age of 25. This is when the aging process actually begins, and this hormone slowly declines for the rest of our lives. Cells divide only a certain amount of times in the body. The cell division process takes place at the time of conception; it is needed for development and growth of life. As we grow, cells divide and multiply. However, as we continue to get older, cell division slows down. Telomeres are the stretches of DNA which protect our genetic information from being destroyed. However, when the cells divide, these telomeres get shorter. When they get too short, they can no longer divide. The University of Utah’s Dr. Richard Cawthorne and his colleagues discovered that shorter telomeres are correlated with shorter lives. HGH is not considered to be dangerous. Amidst all the benefits of HGH, there are still some stigmas that exist. The media has portrayed this hormone in a very negative light, mostly due to side effects and inappropriate usage of injectable applications. There is now an HGH gel available without a prescription; it is the only transdermal FDA-registered human growth hormone product available without a prescription. The molecular breakdown found in HGH gel is a synthetic USP Somatropin, a homeopathic form of the growth hormone. It is safe and effective for men and women over the age of 18. In order to be FDA-registered, the homeopathic product is diluted to a 30X dose—any less of a dilution requires a prescription. The HGH gel is applied topically and absorbed into the bloodstream in five to 10 minutes. Typical applications for the gel are on the “furnace” parts of the skin wherever veins are visible—under the arms, on the wrists and forearms, and behind the knees. This gel has been tested for 25 years. Its possible benefits include significant fat loss; enhanced muscle mass; improved mood energy, memory and sleep; faster recovery time; increased libido and sexual performance; and alleviated joint pain. Shirley Bloethe is a distributor for New Life HGH Gel™ and Director of the Holistic Chamber of Commerce, New Haven Chapter. Connect at 860-989-0033 or email HGH8609890033@gmail.com. Researchers Raise Red Flags
A research paper, World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice, published in the journal Bioscience about the fate of humanity, has received more than 20,000 signatures and endorsements from scientists in 184 countries. Meanwhile, if humans don’t reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically and maintain carbon sinks like forests within 10 years, the impact on our climate will be catastrophic, according to the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. Researchers there have developed a model that they believe could do the trick; it calls for fossil fuel consumption to be reduced to less than 25 percent of the global energy supply by 2100, a drastic cut from the 95 percent being used now. Deforestation also must be cut significantly to lead to a 42 percent decrease in cumulative emissions. The target is in line with the Paris agreement on climate change, which 194 countries have signed, but not the United States. 12

Dolly Parton Donates Millions of Books Singer Dolly Parton donated the 100 millionth book of her career via her nonprofit Imagination Library earlier this year. She began in 1995, donating books to children in her home state of Tennessee. Now, Imagination Library mails 1 millionplus books per month to children around the world. Parton celebrated the milestone by donating to and giving a reading at the Library of Congress. “My daddy couldn’t read and write, and that always troubled and bothered him, so I wanted to do something special for him,” says Parton. “I got the idea to start this program and let my dad help me with it, and he got to live long enough to hear the kids call me the ‘book lady.’”

A day later, he was not only already starting to accept it, but also realized he could place his weight on it. “That in itself is revolutionary for a bird,” says Veterinarian LaToya Latney, service head and attending clinician of the Exotic Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s Ryan Hospital, known as Penn Vet. “He gets it.” In another case of an interspecies application of new medical technology, Lola, a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, the most endangered species of marine turtle, suffered injuries so extensive that a flipper was amputated. Losing a limb can make it difficult for a turtle to avoid predators or chase after prey. At the Key West Aquarium, in Florida, Iok Wong, Samantha Varela and Vivian Liang, three recent engineering graduates from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Massachusetts, used their specialized skills and 3-D printing to create an effective, low-cost prosthetic turtle flipper.

Healing Hearts in Body and Spirit
L
A Conversation with Liz Driscoll Jorgensen
iz Driscoll Jorgensen, owner of Insight Counseling in Ridgefield and a nationally known speaker and teacher, is leading a healing retreat on September 15 at The Mercy Center in Madison. Natural Awakenings asked her to share some insights from her journey into her own healing and the learnings she has gained from her many clients over the years.
What led you from the Western “physical only” approach to a mind-body-spirit view of healing?
As a true believer in Eastern and spiritual modalities of healing, I also admit to previously being a skeptic about the effectiveness of some of the ancient practices I now embrace. Reiki, yoga and sound healing all seemed like fun and interesting ways to relax; but could they really help me heal? Could they be employed as part of treatment for my clients who experienced grave traumas and suffer with emotional and physical disorders? I have worked as a therapist for over 30 years with predominantly “Western”, evidencebased therapies and medical interventions. In doing so, I achieved very good results for many clients, but I also believed that all lasting change involves the heart and the Spirit. Several years ago, I followed the advice of dear friends and colleagues and tried body centered healing methods and practices. Awkward and bumbling at first in yoga, and distracted in mindfulness, I stayed with it and quickly became a believer. In the years since my own “conversion” from skeptic to believer, I have integrated the healing modalities we are teaching in this retreat into
Insight Counseling with tremendous positive effect. Now my colleagues and friends and I have created a day-long retreat where others can taste some of these powerful healing practices that truly affect body, heart and soul. This day of healing was created to give spiritual seekers, people in recovery and those who have suffered loss a sampling of six healing modalities in a safe, beautiful setting on the Long Island Sound.
What types of experiences will participants have?
We will be presenting well-known modalities, such as yoga and walking meditation, as well as Biodanza and sound healing. Biodanza is an immersive movement therapy developed by Chilean anthropologist and psychologist Rolando Toro in the 1960s. It literally means, “The Dance of Life,” and participants need no level of dance skills to benefit from this heartopening and unique healing experience. Toro used this expressive movement to help people with profound mental illness. It is practiced in 54 countries and used for healing and stress reduction. It allows participants to connect deeply with others in a fully human way. I first tried Biodanza four years ago
with Michelle Dubreuil Maeck, our teacher for the retreat. My experience was profound. Maeck trained with the Toro, and is an East Coast leader in this healing practice. Her positive and passionate energy are infectious.
You mentioned sound healing. Will that be a part of the workshop?
Jen Ripa Edson, owner of Thrivologie in Ridgefield, will lead the retreat group in a gong bath, a form of sound healing that is over 3,000-years old. Participants lie in a relaxed position and mindfully experience the deep resonating tones of live gong playing. My own experience with this practice was profound; I was “visited” by my grandmother and a minor physical ailment was healed.
What type of yoga will be included in the experience? Does someone need to be an experienced yogi?
We will offer yoga for every body, including a healing Yoga Nidra practice focused on the heart and spirit. This will be led by Rosa Esposito Fiore and Jean Daniello, the yoga teachers at Insight Counseling. Fiore also owns Coppergrace Yoga and is a Reiki master. She will lead the vision board part of the retreat, assisted by other healers. Daniello is a Reiki expert and yoga teacher with a profound interest in helping people who suffer with addictions. She is also dedicated to working with teenagers.
What part of the event will you lead?
With me, participants will experience a small taste of the Western tradition of narrative healing from the fifth-century saint, St. Benedict to the modern wisdom of the 12 Step Traditions. My healing practice is particularly focused on people who suffer with addictions, including those with food and codependency. the world through other’s lenses as well, not just their parents. They begin to look for self-worth outside themselves. While attending school, they may ask or demand to wear the most expensive clothing and have the latest version of the iPhone. They may begin to use drugs and put themselves in very dangerous situations just to fit in. In adulthood, the need for self-worth looks different. In addition to the latest fashion statement and the latest iPhone, an expensive car, mansion, yacht or the corner office may be what they aim for. Children that haven’t been soulfully parented are encouraged to keep doing and stop being. Unfortunately, some parents are not aware that they’re parenting from a painful place, from their “inner child” point of view.
Why You Need to Be a Soulful Parent by Maria Rivera Heath
W
hat does it mean to be a soulful parent? Soulful parenting is a way of parenting where the child is given permission to explore their world through their own eyes, not through the eyes of the parent. The child is allowed to listen to their own intuition, encouraged to express themselves through the art of dance, music, painting, and to play freely stimulating their self-worth and nourishing their selfesteem. The child also learns how to speak their truth without judgement and only love. With soulful parenting parents take one step back, or two while permitting the child’s soul to have the spiritual experience it came here to have.
Obstacles That Get in the Way
Obstacles that get in the way of soulful parenting are issues that stem from the parent’s childhood. Parents that hurt their children hurt them because they themselves are hurting. Parents that are hurting inside tend to parent from an “inner child” perspective due to unresolved loss, abuse, abandonment and/or trauma. Parenting from a place of pain fosters children that are uncertain, full of anxiety and, at 14

times, full of shame. The child’s decision making is skewed as they try to figure out if something is what they want or if it is something their parents want. This distorted way of thinking follows the child from childhood well into adulthood. When the child explores their world through their parent’s eyes instead of theirs, the parent’s voice becomes the child’s internal voice. Not only does the parent’s voice become the child’s blueprint, but so does the parent’s fears. In adulthood, the child is still looking for their individuality, still searching how to quiet their parent’s voice and attempting to learn how to listen to their own voice. These adults are trying to unlearn what they learned during childhood from fearful parents. This is one of many reasons why adult children stay away from their elderly parents. The opposite holds true with the adult child that is still living with their elderly parents and is entangled with them. They may still be immature and apprehensive about living life on their own terms, afraid to see life through their own lens. A parent can only take a child as far as they have been themselves. An uncertain child begins to look at

Our Children Are Our Reflections
When parents pay attention to their child’s behavior and how their child expresses themselves, they’ll see themselves in that behavior and that expression. The child mirrors the parent. That mirroring is what triggers the parent’s pained “inner child” to react in a negative way. The parent may react by yelling, screaming, hitting the child and sometimes abandoning the child. During these times, the parent may feel out of control because they are. The good thing about mirroring is that the child’s mirroring will also let the parent know how well they’re doing as a parent. For example, the child will come home from school eager to show their grades, excited to tell the parent the next new thing and share with their dreams with anyone who will listen. Not only are children our future, our children are our teachers. A child with a soulful parent will teach us how to play again, how to be silly, how to be courageous, how to connect with others and how to forgive. It’s easy for children to make friends, to be creative in making up new games in a split of a second. They forgive easier and faster than adults do. They come here already possessing all these wonderful attributes that serve them well all throughout their lifetime.

wise words
Removing the Obstacles and Parenting with Soul
How can we remove these obstacles that get in the way of becoming a soulful parent? Parents hold transformative power to turn things around. Children in nature want to impress their parents, and parents by nature love their children. The more invested the parent is to soulful parenting, the greater the bond will be with the child. These positive practices will impact both the child and parent’s neurobiology in a positive and constructive way. While the parent is healing the relationship with their child, they’re also healing their “inner child.” The more aligned the parent becomes with their soul, so does the child. By adding one or two of the following ideas on a consistent basis, the bond between parent and child will improve dramatically. n Wake up the child gently as this gesture will start the day on the right foot n Embrace the child n Tell and show the child that they’re loved n Encourage the child to listen to their own intuition n Children want to know about their parents, so tell them a story n Make up a song and sing it while getting dressed and while doing any chore n Reassure the child when they’re not sure n Complement the child and tell the child they’re doing a great job n Talk with the child, not to the child, and get down to their eye level and look at their eyes while talking (this practice will help them learn intimacy and security) n Painting together on the same canvas teaches them about sharing space n Write a story together n Meditate and/or pray together n Cook a meal together n Go on a car ride without any distractions n Always say good night

Keep in mind that teens are transitioning from childhood to adulthood. This transition can make them moody. They are known to whine one moment (child) and being a “know-it-all” the next (adult). Teens want to form their own identities. Soulful parents need to focus on the child’s soul. Soulful parents need to think of parenting this way: the child is here on a soul retreat and the parent is the host, guiding them through. Children are here to love, learn and expand their consciousness as well as their parent’s. Raising Pet-Friendly Kids
Behavioral Awareness Benefits Humans and Pets by Mary Oquendo
F
amily pets cause approximately 77 percent of all dog bites and the number one cause of death of pets under the age of three is euthanasia at a shelter. The most common reason these pets were surrendered to the shelter is because they bit a child. This sad cycle can be stopped with attention and behavior adjustment for both humans and animals. A dog bite can leave more than just physical scars on a child. The emotional pain and fear may stay with the child for the rest of their life. Unfortunately, the situation is not usually the child’s fault. Children are not born with an innate knowledge of how to appropriately approach and interact with animals so it is the job of adults to teach this skill. If parents or adults feel unskilled or unable 16
New Haven/Middlesex
to do this, there are professional dog trainers and behaviorists who can help create a program to instill these skills in children in relation to a personal pet. Some basic lessons should include: Always ask permission to approach an unknown pet. Any animal may be a bite risk. After receiving permission, have the child ask the pet owner the best way to approach the pet. If permission is denied, respect the pet owner’s choice. After all, they know their pet’s behavior better than you or your child does. Never disturb a sleeping dog. The first reaction of any animal coming out of a deep sleep may be to defend itself. Instead, stomp on the floor nearby or make noise
NaturalNewHaven.com
to rouse the pet before approaching. Respect the pet’s property. This includes their toys and food. Some pets are resource guarders, meaning they pose a bite risk if a child takes something of importance to the pet. Be aware of the signs of an overwhelmed pet. If the pet is trying to get away, let them. Don’t let a child follow or otherwise approach a pet who is clearly trying to move away from a child. Make sure the pet has ready access to safe place away from children. This may be a crate, a space under a table or bench or even a separate room. Children should be supervised around animals. This is true even for animals they
know. Just as pets may pose a risk to the child, children may inadvertently cause injury to an unsuspecting pet with rough handling or climbing on or over the pet. Whether based in fear, pain or reactive behavior—a bite is still a bite. There are usually some clear warning aggressive behavioral cues with dogs. n Direct eye contact from the dog n Stiffly wagging tail n Rigid body n Curling of gums exposing teeth n Attempting to appear larger, such as arching of back, ears straight up, tail erect and wide eyes n Attempting to appear smaller, with ears flat against the head, tail tucked under body and body curled up n Looking sideways at people All of the above is a dog’s way of telling us they are going to bite if the situation does not change. Unfortunately, these cues are often misread or ignored, which leads to bites and former pets dying in shelters after surrender. Dogs are not the only pet to be concerned about. Cat bites can pose a serious health issue because their bites create puncture wounds that seal up quickly, trapping bacteria under the skin. Those bacteria may lead to cellulitis, a life-threatening condition. Like dogs, cats will try to make themselves bigger or smaller before resorting to biting. Warning behavioral cues of cats include ears flat back, a puffy tail, an arched back and hissing. It is the job of the adult to watch for warning signs and run interference if a pet is becoming agitated or upset. Teaching children to respect animals and understand their boundaries may keep families together and has the added benefit of also teaching children greater responsibility, empathy, compassion and patience. AUGUST
Bright Light? Less Light? Or Glimmering Moments Between?
A
by Patricia Heavren
ugust can seem like a month of secret betrayals. Its steamy heat makes it easy to pretend there isn’t a hint of fall already in the air. It’s equally easy to overlook the trees’ still-green leaves fluttering back and forth in the summer breeze and ignore their foretelling of tiny hands that will soon be waving through school bus windows. These are the kind of subtle, cycle-ending goodbyes August brings that can leave beachgoers in half conscious mourning while still applying sunscreen and leave parents of kindergarten kids at the end of driveways wondering how time had passed so quickly. 18
New Haven/Middlesex
Are the signs there all along? In a culture cued more to the clock than to the sun, more to electronics than to nature, August is often a month of sly transition. Behind its fiery rays lies a cool truth that many miss: The dark has been slowly encroaching since the first day of summer. Time has ticked away unnoticed, blinded by humankind’s collective attachment to the bright. Though there are exceptions, the world doesn’t prefer the dark. The modern world loves and clings to the light, on every level from the literal to the spiritual and between. Take electricity.
NaturalNewHaven.com
It has literally “illuminated” life on Earth to such a degree that humankind had to coin a phrase to describe a new kind of toxic excess: light pollution. What isn’t always obvious from the ground, while it stealthily steals the stars at night right out from over our heads, is unmistakable from a longer view. Satellites traversing those starless skies are beaming back some pretty telling pictures that are far from enlightening. Like the growing minutes of darkness eclipsed by the fascination with the summer sun, global light pollution has snuck up on humanity at an alarming rate both in developed and developing nations. Its side effects are not yet fully understood.
The modern world loves and clings to the light, on every level from the literal to the spiritual and between. Take electricity. It has literally “illuminated” life on Earth to such a degree that humankind had to coin a phrase to describe a new kind of toxic excess: light pollution. What we do know is that it’s disrupting the circadian rhythms of plants, animals, and humans. Street lights are interfering with insects that pollenate plants at night. Sleep cycles are interrupted and kept shallow by LED alarm clocks, and night lights. Birds collide with lighted buildings and towers. And because the entire biological world organizes around natural cycles of light variation, everything is affected, from gene expression to ecosystem function. The impacts are far-reaching. Didn’t someone, somewhere, once warn, “Don’t mess with Mother Nature?” On the other end of the spectrum, fixation with bright light also affects spiritual beliefs. While it is quite wonderful and noble for the light in me to bow to the light in you, and to be certain not to hide our light under a bushel, if those phrases aren’t understood wholistically, another kind of light pollution can result. Without grounding, even spiritual experience can result in a bit of sunstroke. A wholistic, or even a simplified scientific perspective, might describe it like this: There is only light, one light, which is expressed in varying gradations of brightness, including what we call dark. All variegations have their place within wholeness. In other words, an outdoor floodlight isn’t well-suited to hang over the romantic table for two. And few would want their doctor to perform surgery by candlelight. Could there be a metaphoric, if not prophetic, truth in the Old Testament stories that the next massive global change won’t come by water, but by fire? Whether those stories have any basis in fact
is beside the point. They exist and have contributed, at least in part, to the cultural narrative of Western civilization, so they’re worth paying attention to. While fire-powered robotics gone mad, nuclear explosions, or the hurl of asteroids toward Earth might all fit the Biblical bill, they are strangely a much lesser threat than the enthrallment with the kind of bright light that blinds the world to the beauty of the dim and other humble expressions of lesser wattage. The ability of humankind to know it contains all of the gradations of light within is the best prevention against doomsday prophecies of fire. It is far more likely that the divisions of a polarized world, and the inability to bridge the spaces between, will render humanity extinct (never mind other plant and animal species) much more quickly than the Hollywood catastrophe films played out in real time. Could the subtleties between be the more plausible Armageddon—from the macro-epidemics of depression, growing suicide rates, and intolerances of diversity to the micro-epidemics of a child’s fear of the dark, August angst, and our partiality to conscious goals and intentions rather than a healthy mix of the mystery of a creative unknown? Might the awareness of it act as a kind of natural awakening? One that might make room to explore fate-shifting alternatives? The outcome of this big cycle-ending goodbye will depend on one, and only one, factor. It isn’t stellar, global, or collective. It is individual. Tomorrow will be predicated on each individual’s ability to make room for all of it today, while clinging to none of it. But to make room for clinging if that is what’s showing up. August, by its very nature as a time of hot transition, brings it all to the surface and also offers a great prescription for healing. Eat plenty of organic corn, peaches, and raspberries. Open to the sounds of the season. Pause more, and if you must be quick to make a point, practice sharpening pencils. Shop for back to school with delight or resentment. Roll up or roll out the beach blanket. Wave fists at the sun that is setting sooner at night. Curse or hail the calendar and the clock. Complain about September coming too fast. Settle into the fertility present that will eventually birth crisp apples, sun-golden dying leaves, and tiny hands that wave tender goodbyes from one era to the next, knowing that a new season of life awaits, both within and beyond the end of every driveway. Embrace imminent, beautifully catastrophic change. Love the less light as much as the light. Stay fluid and live a life of all the possibilities, while being delightfully captive by each precious part of every season, and every moment, fully. The only betrayal worth entertaining is the habit of living life halfway. Happy August! Generational Healing Letting Go of Our Ancestors’ Past Traumas by Ed Federici
S
everal scientific studies within the last few years suggest that trauma may be passed down in our DNA from generation to generation, and the youngest generation doesn’t even have to experience a traumatic event to feel the effect. They may feel it in their body, their relationships or their personality. Much of the time we make choices, good or bad, based on our past experiences. If this research is proven over time to be true, what if we are making decisions based on a past traumatic experience that we ourselves did not personally go through? It’s common for us to beat ourselves up and shame ourselves for having anything other than “optimal emotions”. We want to or think we should only be good, or happy or polite all of the time. The truth is, that is not realistic, healthy or balanced. Healing 20
New Haven/Middlesex
happens when the pain, grief, despair, fear and shame that resided in our ancestors that has now been passed down to us is addressed. We have to realize that also inside of us resides love, life, light, grace, peace, strength, wisdom, courage and beauty. Why do we make this an eitheror battle? We need to integrate the light forces with the dark emotions. It can help to realize that these dark emotions most likely came from our ancestors, including people we have never met, as well as from our own childhood experiences and possible traumas we may not even remember. All of these experiences become compounded and we adapt for good or for bad and integrate them into our lives simply to survive. How do we know what is ours and what belonged to them? How do we “give them back” to
NaturalNewHaven.com
our ancestors? Let’s take a look at a typical scenario of family systems dynamics being unconsciously transmitted through three generations. There is an adage in family therapy that states, in simplified terms: 1) what the grandparents experienced, 2) the children will feel and, 3) the grandchildren will act out (behave in certain ways that are loyal to their grandparents). Grandparents experience: A grandmother, Nancy, is repeatedly physically abused by her husband and eventually leaves him to raise her children on her own. Children feel: Her children did not witness the domestic violence and were so
young when they left that they don’t remember living with their father. Nancy’s youngest child, Mary, experiences emotional energy from the domestic violence dynamics between her mother (Nancy) and her father, which flows into and incubates inside Mary. Mary grows up, gets married to a kind, loving man who is not at all abusive but is a “workaholic”, and has one child, Lisa (Nancy’s granddaughter). Lisa grows up feeling loved and secure due to Mary’s dedication to being a strong, loving mother. Lisa feels less secure with her father due to his working so much, but also she never sees her mother and father engage as a loving husband and wife with each other; they are cordial, but distant. It is clear that Mary becomes a fierce mother who takes charge if she believes Lisa’s father is wrong in his interactions with Lisa. Grandchildren act out: Lisa grows up and is now unhappily married to her husband. She has three children under 5 years old. Lisa is the grandchild in this scenario—who may now “act out” unresolved trauma from her grandmother. How? Remember the feelings that were incubating inside of Mary all these years? The research points to genetics being affected by the domestic violence trauma Nancy experienced and now Lisa is potentially going to repeat. The actual behavior of domestic violence does not have to repeat from Lisa’s husband to Lisa, but the feelings (incubating inside of her mother and experienced by her grandmother) associated with the domestic violence are repeated. These feelings are being repeated subtly now between Lisa and her husband, as indicated in her stating she is “unhappily married”. What can Lisa do? It is the goal of therapy to: help clients safely re-experience their unresolved emotional wounds—including their ancestors’ trauma; feel the feelings associated with the wounds/trauma; share those feelings verbally with another person; and practice new behaviors in a loving manner. Engaging in the four steps listed below will take discipline— and typically guidance from someone experienced in helping others heal past wounds. If we do not, we may have many regrets. If we live a life of regret, we may be engaging in an “invisible loyalty” with an “unconscious umbilical cord” attached to some ancestor that may need to be recognized and honored. In this particular case, the four steps were worked through in the context of a family constellation. Family constellations is a therapeutic approach designed to help reveal the hidden dynamics in a family or relationship in order to address any stressors impacting these relationships and heal them. n Honor our ancestors—especially including the ones that have been exiled, shunned, excluded or forgotten. The women in Lisa’s family are strong, dedicated and defensive toward men. Lisa should honor her grandmother for her strength and dedication. Lisa was eventually able to say the following
words and felt strong and motivated after speaking them: “Dear grandmother, because of your strength I am also strong and capable. However, I have chosen a different man than you and I do not need to remain unhappy and leave him as you did my grandfather. Please bless me as I use my strength to join with my husband intimately, rather than be fiercely independent.” n Love and accept the gifts that they gave us—both the dark and the light—and be grateful for the lessons. It was revealed later in the constellation that Lisa had started drinking like her grandfather. This “unconscious umbilical cord” revealed that she is part of the problem in her marriage as she gets belligerent when she drinks—this is the “invisible loyalty” to her grandfather. At one point in the constellation, a man representing her grandfather emotionally stated, “Dear granddaughter, I wish I could have known you. You are beginning to know me a little through your drinking and your belligerence. That’s enough! You don’t need to know me like that. That was my fate. I will be proud if you can fight the alcohol and love your husband. Not like me—I fought your grandmother and loved the booze. I did love your grandmother, but could not show her. Go create a good life.” n Integrate the lessons/gather those gifts into ourselves by engaging in therapeutic healing methods. n Create our destiny and share our gifts with the next generation, hoping the path along their journey will be a little less bumpy. Instead of remaining invisibly loyal to our ancestors’ fate, we can do some therapeutic work using experiential therapy (family constellations is one form of this) and give them back what is theirs. They would much rather we take their love that was somehow blocked from getting to us—and that they want us to truly have—rather than take on pain that was their fate. Once we do this therapeutic work we are free to co-create our future, while remaining present, centered in the moment and lovingly connected to our past and ancestors. Anyone who struggles with illness, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive thoughts, fears, phobias, guilt, bi-polar disorder, persistent anger, lingering grief, meaninglessness, psychosomatic diseases, asthma, colitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, IBS, reproductive health issues, failed relationships, financial difficulties, family violence, addictions, OCD, ADHD, ADD or PTSD can benefit from receiving a family constellation. community resource guide APPLIED KINESIOLOGY KC CHIROPRACTIC & WELLNESS Kevin Healy, DC 17 Woodland Road, Madison, CT 203-245-9317 KevinHealy@sbcglobal.net DrHealMe.com
Applied Kinesiology is a neurological evaluation to find and treat dysfunction. Different because it addresses causes instead of chasing pains, Dr. Healy tests if a therapy alleviates dysfunction, finding immediate answers as to which provides the most improvement. Chiropractic, craniosacral, myofascial and acupressure are among the therapies Dr. Healy uses. Generally, no single cure exists as disease and dysfunction typically involve multiple areas of the body. The goal of any therapy—physical, chemical, or emotional—is to improve function; a combination of therapies typically yields the best results. See ad on page 6.
