Today is my last day in Europe after a three week adventure. While my head is clear and the skies are gray and dark with rain, I sit and write this letter from Rome, Italy. Although I had to scramble a bit to make it happen, I made the time to travel to Spain to see where my daughter Kathryn studied abroad knowing that this opportunity only comes once. Family time has always been a top priority to me. And family bonding on a travel adventure only makes it that much more meaningful. Saint Honorat France Speaking of adventure, after multiple taxi trips and visits to the wrong train and bus terminals, Kathyrn and I were robbed in Madrid. While we made it out of the incident with no physical harm done to us, we abruptly found ourselves one backpack and one passport lighter. With God's good grace and our abundance of resourcefulness we made it to France. And lady luck shined on us in Cannes, where Kathryn's classmate just happened to live and own a boat. Synergy at its finest! During our travels to obtain a new passport we stumbled across the marina where the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar was docked. To my delight, I discovered it's the only solar operated boat to make it around the world. Marseilles France Energy efficiency straordinario! We then took a spontaneous detour to an island called Porquerolles and landed a last minute bed and breakfast for two glorious nights. As soon as we dropped off our bags, we took a walk to the beach. In no time, we found ourselves stand up paddle boarding on the clear blue Mediterranean Sea. Such a delight! Throughout our entire journey we connected with the finest people from all over the world—including our local California neighbors. It was natural networking everywhere we went. And to add an extra jolt of adrenaline zest to our quest, we took a bike tour thru Rome—without even signing a release waiver! While the drivers in Rome may act like they have the right of way and do drive crazy, economy cars, scooters and mass transportation rule throughout Europe. And that is pretty neat. My intention is to help make safe, efficient economy transportation the norm for us in The States. Won’t you join me? Extra smiles to the boys with the energy efficient toys,

Peace, Love and Misunderstanding Film Opens

T

wo-time Academy Award®nominated director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Mao’s Last Dancer) showcases a brilliant performance from two-time Academy Award-winner Jane Fonda in Peace, Love and Misunderstanding will be available in theaters on June 8 and On Demand June 15. For uptight Manhattan lawyer Diane (Oscar-nominee Catherine Keener), crazy means driving her teenage son Jake (Nat Wolff) and daughter Zoe (Elizabeth Olsen) to Woodstock to visit their grandmother Grace (Fonda). The crazy part is that the kids have never met Grace. In fact, Diane hasn’t spoken to her mother in 20 years. Grace is the epitome of the term “hippie”: she stages protests and hootenannies in the town square, smokes and sells a lot of dope, and howls at the moon once a month with her goddess-worshipping girlfriends. But what’s meant to be a weekend getaway turns into a summer adventure of romance, music, family secrets and self-discovery. At the heart of Bruce Beresford’s multigenerational comedy-drama, Peace, Love and Misunderstanding are the family ties that bind us . . . and then tangle us up in crazy knots. It is a story about second chances and the things that divide and reunite families. For more information visit IFCFilms. com/films/peace-love-misunderstanding.

Juggling Bumps Up Brainpower

C

an rhythmically tossing and catching balls in the air help grow the brain? Researchers from the Universität Regensburg, in Germany, after studying two dozen people using brain scans, say yes. Half were asked to learn to juggle; the others were given no special instructions. After three months, the brains of the jugglers had grown by 3 to 4 percent in the areas that process visual and motor information; the more skilled the jugglers became, the greater the brain growth. No change occurred in the nonjuggling group. The research team says the study proves that new stimuli can alter the brain’s structure, not just its function. Source: Nature.com

Eggs’ Sunny Upside

O

ften considered one of nature’s most perfect foods, eggs are an excellent source of protein, lipids, vitamins and minerals. Now, researchers at the University of Alberta, in Canada, have discovered that they also contain antioxidant properties that help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Jianping Wu and his team of researchers at the university’s Department of Agricultural Food and Nutritional Science examined egg yolks produced by hens that were fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn. They found the yolks contained two amino acids; tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxidant properties. The researchers found that two raw egg yolks offer almost twice as many antioxidant properties as one apple and about the same as half a serving (25 grams) of cranberries. When the eggs were fried or boiled, however, the beneficial properties were reduced by about half. “It’s a big reduction, but it still leaves eggs equal to apples in their antioxidant value,” says Wu. In prior research, Wu found that egg proteins converted by digestive enzymes produced peptides that work in the same way as ACE inhibitors, prescription drugs used to reduce high blood pressure. That finding contradicted the notion that eggs increase high blood pressure because of their cholesterol content. 14

Red Meat Raises Diabetes Risk

A

study by the University of Glasgow, in Scotland, shows that men are at greater risk than women for Type 2 diabetes, because they tend to develop it at a lower body mass index. Furthermore, red meat, a favorite food among many men, is a suspected risk agent. Harvard School of Public Health researchers have found a strong association between the regular consumption of red meat—particularly processed options like bacon and hot dogs—and a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Their study notes that replacing red meat with healthier proteins, such as low-fat dairy, nuts or whole grains, can significantly lower the risk.

Can Canned BPA

hink twice before sipping soda or soup that comes in a can. A recent study by Harvard School of Public Health researchers discovered people that ate one serving of canned food daily for five days had significantly elevated levels of bisphenol-A (BPA), an endocrine disrupter sometimes found in plastic bottles, that also lines most food and drink cans. Studies have linked high urine levels of BPA to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other health conditions. The spike in BPA levels recorded by the Harvard researchers was one of the highest seen in any study. Source: Journal of the American Medical Association

Auto Immune Toxicity Report on New Car Interiors

The consumer watchdog Ecology Center’s HealthyStuff.org, a product test results website, points out that there is more to green vehicles than fuel economy. That new-car smell can include a toxic mix of chemicals carried over from the manufacturing of seats, steering wheels, dashboards and armrests. The group’s fourth annual report on more than 200 model year 2011 and 2012 vehicles gave the Honda Civic and CR-Z and the Toyota Prius top marks for the least interior pollution, while the Kia Soul, Chrysler 200 SC and Mitsubishi Outlander ranked as the worst. The researchers tested for toxic heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and cancer-causing chemicals like benzene and brominated flame retardants. “Automobiles function as chemical reactors, creating one of the most hazardous environments we spend time in,” says Jeff Gearhart, research director of the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based nonprofit. No mandatory testing or regulation of the chemicals used in vehicle manufacturing exists, so consumers face a lack of helpful information. The use of some chemicals has voluntarily declined since 2006, but many cars continue to contain chemical levels that consumer advocates consider unsafe. The biggest decrease has been in the use of plastics made with the highly toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as well as bromine, chromium leather dyes and lead. View the full list of cars in the report at Tinyurl.com/carsrated.

June 12 marks 10 years of online social collaboration through the Meetup network, formed in the aftermath of the September 2001 (9/11) tragedy. Co-founder and CEO Scott Heiferman says, “I was living a couple of miles from the Twin Towers, and was the kind of person who thought local community doesn’t matter much if we’ve got the Internet and TV. The only time I thought about my neighbors was when I hoped they wouldn’t bother me.” Then, suddenly, people started helping each other and meeting up with each other and the idea for Meetup was born. Each of more than 100,000 Meetup groups starts with people simply saying hello to neighbors. Membership is 10 million and growing. To join in, visit Meetup.com.

our years ago, a pharmaceutical scientist set out to create a line of skincare products based on the ancient principles of Ayurveda, the “science of life” practiced in India for over 5000 years, and Dr. Desai Soap was birthed. Located on a solar-powered farm in New Jersey, the family business crafts therapeutic soap and skincare products using organic milk from their goats and organic and fair trade herbs, and ships the finished products in reusable cotton bags all over the globe. “All personal care products leave a residue on your body when used,” Dr. Vinay Desai says, explaining that the cleansing or foaming property of most commercial shampoo and cleansers is provided by synthetic detergents. “These detergents strip away natural oils that your skin produces, plus they deposit chemical residues after they strip away those oils.” However, it’s what happens next that really concerns Dr. Desai. “The www.na-sd.com

skin being the largest organ in our body, absorbs these residues where they can cause long term effects internally or produce external allergic responses such as dermatitis or eczema,” he says. Fortunately, the highly absorbent nature of the skin can also be a benefit instead of a liability. Dr. Desai Soap uses Ayurvedic herbs and principles to holistically treat a range of skin conditions. The company’s customers have reported their natural products helpful for improving and even healing eczema, psoriasis and other ailments,

sometimes within days of beginning to use the soap. Dr. Desai Soap products also stand as an alternative to eczema medications, which may have longterm side effects. “Most steroidal and prescription drugs are very effective in managing life-threatening conditions, and medical emergencies, for example,” Dr. Desai says. “However, they work by suppressing your immune system, and

can ultimately make you more susceptible to infectious diseases and have other side effects when used long term.” Dr. Desai explains that herbs and oils used in Ayurveda can often help without the need for suppressing the body’s natural functions. “Ayurveda and yoga are both complementary ancient Vedic sciences of India,” Dr. Desai says. “Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. The basic principle of Ayurveda is to prevent and treat illness by maintaining balance in the body, mind, and consciousness,” he says. The company’s soap line includes products ranging from the “Sandalwood Rejuvenating Facial Bar,” to “Tulsi-Neem #1 Anti-Itch and Anti-Inflammatory Treatment Soap,” and they have recently launched a new line of liquid soaps. Dr. Desai lives with his wife, Donna; three children; three rescue dogs, alpacas, a llama, goats, chickens, Guinea hens, two horses and one miniature horse. Guests are encouraged to ditch their cell phones and laptops in favor of a zip line adventure through the Smoky Mountains forest canopy and laid back log cabin informality. “Honestly, it was exhilarating being away from my cell phone,” admits Freeman, an interior designer from Collierville, Tennessee. “I hadn’t felt that good and ‘connected’ in a long time. I didn’t realize how much I needed that.” Her experience highlights the new buzzwords and phrases in vacation 18

travel: unplug, reconnect, digital detox and healthy escape. What is it about unplugging that seems so refreshing and like an ideal vacation? Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, explains that, “Using the Internet pushes us to a skimming and scanning form of thinking.” He occasionally unplugs to recover his attention span, noting, “A lot of our deepest thoughts only emerge when we’re able to pay attention to one thing.” For memoirist Pico Iyer, author of The Man Within My Head, “The urgency of slowing down—to find the time and space to think—is nothing new.” What is new is figuring out workable definitions of stillness and movement when we spend a lot of our time physically still, but mentally in motion. A noted travel writer for 20 years, Iyer likes to stay at monasteries around www.na-sd.com

MJ Goff was on a magazine writing assignment the first time she visited the Omega Institute, in Rhinebeck, New York (eOmega.org). As a student of New Age theories and a potential yoga teacher, Goff says she welcomed the opportunity to learn more. Once she attended the women’s retreat she was researching, she was hooked. “Every year since, I find myself being drawn to Omega for its promotion of meditation and overall encouragement of ‘staying in the present,’” she says. “All the programs stem from one mission: to keep us on the right path.” Talks by internationally known speakers such as Joan Borysenko, Eckhart Tolle, Harville Hendrix and Daniel Amen are complemented by sessions in nurturing creativity, holistic health, and yoga practice. “People smile, but also keep to themselves,” explains Goff. “It’s a place for quieting your mind.” For shorter getaways, Hay House, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, sponsors weekend I Can Do It! seminars in various cities (HayHouse. com). Speakers such as Louise Hay, Gregg Braden, Wayne Dyer and Caroline Myss help attendees nudge closer to making milestone transformations, consciousness shifts and progress on their healing journeys. Sometimes, personal growth simply involves sufficient quiet time to walk, contemplate and reconnect with our muse. “The real meaning of the word ‘retreat’ in the spiritual sense,” says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk, “is stepping back. When one steps back, one gets a bet-

ter view of the world, others and our deepest self.” Iyer finds solace at New Camaldoli Heritage, a Benedictine community amidst the rugged terrain of Big Sur, California (Contemplation.com). More than 2,000 monasteries and other spiritual communities throughout North America offer off-the-beatenpath retreats at reasonable prices and generally welcome guests of all religions and spiritual practices. The one requirement is that guests not disturb others. At Ghost Ranch, in the high desert of Abiquiu, New Mexico, “The scenery alone is spiritual and healing,” relates Nancy Early, a New York film producer. Under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, activities encourage individual and social transformation (NewMexico-GhostRanch.org). Early says the best part is, “There’s one pay phone, and cell phones don’t work here; no TV or radio. You walk away from everything that controls your life.”

Optimal Wellness: Mind/Body

Sometimes the healthy escape we seek can be found at a destination spa, which combines enough structure to slowly wean us from daily busyness with sufficient soothing, quiet spaces and physical nurturing. For Debbie Phillips—who spends part of the year in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and the other part in Naples, Florida—one visit to a spa was all it took. As an executive and life coach, Phillips founded Women on Fire in 2003 to connect her “on fire” clients with each other via regional meetings and a free online newsletter, and discovered that the condition sometimes crosses the line into overwork. “My first visit to a spa more than 20 years ago was when I first learned about the life-changing benefits of taking better care of myself. In addition to the soothing amenities, the peace, calm and quiet usually found at a spa—space to think, nap, read a book or gaze into the sky—often results in ‘less’ becoming ‘more’ in your life,” Phillips says. “I have returned home

feeling lighter and brighter and even more excited for what is next. The experience gave me just the boost I needed to keep going.” Recently, Phillips discovered simple techniques to nurture herself all year long by attending a breathing and meditation class at the Lake Austin Spa, in Texas. “Now I start each day with long, deep breaths before I even get out of bed,” she says. “It is so simple, so calming and establishes my day with peace.” Virginia Nelson, a San Diego, California, attorney, likewise revels in her twice-yearly visits to Canyon Ranch, in Tucson, Arizona. “The pace in southern California is like running a marathon every day. My visits serve as respites that have allowed me to keep up with it this long. “I first went in 1991 and saw a place to go and cocoon,” recounts Nelson, “but I also discovered incredible fitness and education classes.” The spa is essentially a reset button for her. “It’s rest, rejuvenation and reinvention.” Canyon Ranch has several U.S. locations (CanyonRanch.com).

Some facilities feature niche mind/body experiences, such as the psychic massage or chakra balancing at Mii Amo Spa, in Sedona, Arizona (EnchantmentResort.com). Others specialize in holistic wellness. Tucson’s Miraval Resort, in Arizona, offers an integrative wellness program guided by Dr. Andrew Weil (Tinyurl. com/6p2l237). Chill-out spa services like a hot stone massage are often balanced by breath walking, qigong or desert tightrope walking.

Active Adventure: The Body

Finding a clear stillpoint of one’s soul can also occur while moving and challenging our bodies. Exercise helps us break through not only physical boundaries, but emotional and spiritual barriers, as well. Barbara Bartocci, a long-distance cycler and author of Meditation in Motion, maintains that moving keeps both our brains and bodies healthier. “Research at The University of Arizona found that regular exercise appears to

preserve key parts of the brain involved in attention and memory,” she notes. “It is well known that exercise helps to reduce anxiety, allay depression and generally improve mood, by prompting our bodies to release more endorphins.” Bartocci has experienced the power of these connections firsthand. “Active vacations are truly transformative,” she says emphatically. “When I bicycled across Iowa on RAGBRAI [The Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa], we cycled 76 miles one day on hills with a constant 20-mile-per-hour headwind. It was a tough day, but I made it! My divorce was becoming final that summer, and completing that day gave me the encouraging inner message: ‘If I can cycle Iowa on the toughest day, I can re-cycle my life after divorce.’” She’s still moving along. Recently, she joined 500 other cyclists doing 60 miles a day for a week in Wisconsin. Bill Murphy, of Annapolis, Maryland, made his breakthrough at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (boss-inc.com). “While I wanted an ad-

venture and to put myself out there, I also wanted to know that I was in good hands,” he says about why he chose a guided trip. Murphy was already in good shape, having competed in a local Ironman event. Following an initial fitness assessment that involved testing his heart rate after running at high altitude, he was deemed fit to take part in an outdoor survival experience in Utah’s desert country. With a knife, wool jacket, cap, gloves, long underwear and suitable shoes—but no tent, sleeping bag or food—his group learned to live off the land with the assistance of three instructors in an initial phase of the program. “After two days we were given our backpack with the critical blanket, poncho and food rations. I have never been so happy to hear the words ‘1,500 calories’ in my life, and though I have eaten at some wonderful restaurants, the soups we made with those rations tasted better than anything I have eaten in my life,” he says. Murphy learned how to purify water, make a tent from his poncho, start a fire with minimal tools and bed down in the cold without a sleeping bag or blanket. A crucial part of the survival training was the need to go even further when the group thought their adventure had ended. “We didn’t know whether that would be in 10 miles or 30,” he recalls. His ability to physically push past the mentally established timeframe led Murphy to see that he could also move beyond his either/or boundaries: either family or business; either business or adventure. “I realized that I don’t have to choose one over the other. I feel a better sense of balance now.” In other parts of the country, Outward Bound Adult Renewal also offers new experiences that test physical limits and present breakthrough opportunities (OutwardBound. org). It’s also known for programs that help teens get a better handle on life. Participants often rock climb the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia or sea kayak along the Pacific Northwest or North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Options for growth and renewal appear endless. Nearby or far away, for a few days or longer, a healthy escape can be truly restorative.

Mission Trails Regional Park San Diego’s Best-Kept Secret by Patty Mooney

S

ome are compelled to risk everything to reach the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest. But those of us with more modest appetites—and budgets—don’t have to travel far to climb to the top of San Diego’s highest peak, Cowles Mountain. It was named after George Cowles, a prominent rancher originally from the East Coast who settled in San Diego in 1877 with his wife, Jennie. The couple owned over 4,000 acres in the El Cajon Valley where they grew olive, fruit and magnolia trees, grapevines, grains and potatoes. Their success with fruits and vines was so great that Cowles was coined “Raisin King of the U.S.” Cowles Mountain is located 10 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. After the mile and a half climb from the trailhead at Navajo and Golfcrest, hikers can thrill to 360-degree views of Lake Murray and the eastern mountain ranges, and to the west, La Jolla, Pt. Loma, downtown San Diego and even Los Coronados Islands, on a clear day. Cowles Mountain, Lake Murray and Mission Dam are all part of Mission Trails Regional Park which encompasses nearly 5,800 acres of land representing the way San Diego www.na-sd.com

once was, prior to the arrival of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Cabrillo and his crew were the first Europeans to set foot in Southern California. The Kumeyaay Indians occupied the land prior to the arrival of the Europeans but the only evidence of them now are pottery shards and metates (grooves in stones used for grinding food). Visitors will find a proliferation of these metates at a place dubbed “Grinding Rocks” a few hundred feet north of the Mission Trails Visitors Center along the San Diego River. Those who have never been to Mission Trails before might want to start off by checking out the visitor’s center located at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Father Juniperra Serra. There is a display of Kumeyaay elders inside the center, as well as a variety of stuffed animals,

How to pronounce Cowles Mountain Although everyone calls it “cowls,” the actual pronunciation is “kohls.” including a bobcat, coyote, owl, raccoon, a couple of hawks, and a mountain lion. Visitors will also enjoy displays of Kumeyaay history and culture. The centerpiece, however, is the view overlooking Mission Gorge. This is Southern California’s “Little Yosemite” and is not to be missed. The center even has three or four viewing telescopes through which you can watch rock climbers on sheer granite walls, and maybe even search for hawks, rare checkered butterflies or bobcats. “This is a Mediterranean climate with flora and fauna that can’t be found anywhere else in the world,” says park ranger Paul Seiley. “People are certainly welcome to come and enjoy the park, but we’d like for them to stay on the established trails and away from rare and delicate species of plants that could easily be destroyed by crashing through the bushes.” California sunflowers, laurel sumac, black sage, mission manzanita, mountain mahogany, and other varieties of plant life can be found in the Chaparral and Oak Woodland habitats of Mission Trails. Canine friends are welcome but must be on a leash, to prevent any contact with poison oak or rattle snakes (and don’t forget the plastic baggies). Seiley adds, “If you’re going to hike with your dogs in the summertime, you should go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Dogs don’t perspire like us; they lose their body heat by panting, so exposing them to the midday sun is not humane to the dog. It’s also a good idea to bring water for yourself and your pet.” As we travel up, down and across the variegated trails of Mission Trails Grasslands, Cowles Mountain, and Lake Murray, we do well to remember the adage, “Take only photos and leave only footprints,” and enjoy our beautiful park that nurtures our spirit and refreshes our soul, for we are fortunate to have it.

Three Twinkies a Day to Lose Weight and Improve Health? by Beverly wilson Noble

W

ould you even think of eating three Twinkies a day to lose weight or maintain your health? If you eat out frequently, or use processed foods at home, you are likely eating far more sugar and fat than you realize. Here are a few common food items that contain more added sugar per serving than one Twinkie (18 grams): • Commercial non-fat and fruit flavored yogurts • Fat free salad dressings • Muffins • Canned/bottled pasta sauces • Canned fruit in light syrup • Granola bars • Smoothies • Cold cereal • Sweetened iced tea/fruit juices If your daily meal plan includes one or more of the above, you can see how just one day of pre-packaged foods can really add up. Below, I’ve listed nine reasons why it’s better for you and your family’s health to cook from scratch.

product shelf life but can create longterm health concerns. Preservatives are necessary to stabilize or extend manufactured food product shelf life. Chemical additives keep sauces from separating or mimic the texture of traditional foods. The cost for this convenience is the degradation of our long-term health.

3

Cooking from scratch also puts you in control. If you love chilies, you can add more! And if you can’t take the heat, you add less, or substitute bell peppers. If you love garlic or ginger, double it up…and if you prefer

1

In addition to added sugar, many packaged food items and restaurant meals also contain added fats. Restaurant and fast food salads often contain more fat and calories than a small hamburger. Cooking from scratch will help you and your family to live a longer and healthier life by limiting sugar intake, thus reducing the risks of diabetes and obesity. You will also improve heart and cardiovascular health for increased energy and stamina by limiting fat intake.

2

Cooking from scratch also minimizes the consumption of chemical additives and preservatives that extend 24

bland foods, you can simply reduce or eliminate the spices in the recipe. Your own personal taste rules.

4 5

Cooking also lets you customize your food for specific family health concerns or food allergies.

Cooking with your children is a great way to spend quality time together. You can learn a lot from your children while chopping vegetables or stirring soup; somehow it’s easier for children to open up when they are engaged in an activity at the same time. At the same time, they are learning important life skills. More than the specific food preparation skills, they are learning time management, organization, and even basic math.

6

Cooking from scratch is also a great way to save money. You can feed your family for a week for the cost of a single dinner in a restaurant. The classic economy meals such as soups,

stews, and casseroles do take time. They also freeze well, so a weekend afternoon in the kitchen can create several meals that can go from freezer to the dinner table in minutes. And that long, slow simmering is time that can be spent doing the laundry, cleaning house, or playing a game with your children.

7

Many healthy, economical meals can be on the table in less than 30 minutes; some in less than 15. You can spend that much time in the drive-up lane at your favorite fast food spot, or sitting at a restaurant waiting for a seat. Grilling, sautéing, and stir-frying are all quick cooking techniques. Salads are another speedy choice.

Cooking from scratch has emotional rewards, too. At the end of a frustrating work day, time in the kitchen can be a welcome relief. It’s rewarding to see an immediate, positive, tangible result of your labor.

Cooking for family or friends can be a daily expression of love. So find some recipes that suit your family’s taste buds and health concerns; make a grocery run if needed, and settle in for a great home-cooked meal.

Responding to Change Who’s in Control? by Patricia Ariadne

W

e’ve all heard the old saying that states the one constant in life is change. Change is inevitable. But sometimes it can be challenging to accept. Even if the change in your life is one that you have chosen, you may still feel that you have lost control over your life's direction. And if you did not initiate the change, you may feel even more threatened, hopeless or confused. Spiritual teachings promise us that we always have choices, no matter how limiting our situation appears. The choice may be to walk away from the situation, to upgrade our skills to better meet it, to find assistance, to network, to wait it out. The lessons of this situation may be to face the fear of loss, failure, the unknown, embarrassment, or of taking risks. Our ultimate choice is to decide how we are going to face this fear. Once we have met and "stared down" our greatest fear, it no longer has power to secretly influence our behavior in ways that are destructive to us. We cannot control life. We can only face our problems and decide that we will learn what we can from them—and what attitude to take. But

2. Decide levels of control. On your piece of paper, make three columns. What I can control What I can somewhat control What I cannot control 3. Make lists. In the appropriate column, list the issues you are dealing with according to your ability to control them. 4. Focus. Concentrate on ways to keep yourself centered on the columns that list the things that you can control or can somewhat control. Let go of the things you cannot control.

we do not have to face them alone. We can find support and engage an ally to help us examine our difficulties for the life lessons and spiritual maturity they offer us. The exercise below can help you sort out your issues around controlling the change occurring in your life. Use a paper and pencil to write out the answers to these prompts. 1. Identify the change. Write down the change you are experiencing now or in the foreseeable future.

5. Release to Spirit. Because of the way the universe works, when we worry about things that might happen, we tend to draw them to us. If you have done your very best to take responsibility for your life, then visualize yourself releasing the elements of the change that you cannot control to Spirit. Imagine placing each worry inside its own balloon and releasing it to Spirit. You can also gently tie the worry onto the leg of a dove and send it off. Try any visualization that works for you. 6. Visualize and feel. Visualize the best possible outcome. See and feel the change in as much detail as possible. Ask that whatever happens (and be aware that it may not be what you expect) be for the highest good of all. 7. Ask for the lesson. Be sure to request that you learn whatever life lesson is buried in the change you are experiencing. Patricia Ariadne, Ph.D., is called The Transition Therapist because she understands from personal experience what it takes to safely cross over the bridge of change. Naturopathic Care Can Improve Blood Sugar, Mood in Diabetes by Derek Wing

A

new joint study by Group Health Research Institute and Bastyr University Research Institute found that type 2 diabetes patients who received naturopathic care (as an adjunct to conventional care) had lower blood-sugar levels, better eating and exercise habits, improved moods, and a stronger sense of control over their condition than did patients receiving only conventional care. The findings, published today in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, show that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may have several positive effects on people with type 2 diabetes, which affects nearly 26 million Americans. “The news is encouraging for those fighting the disease,” says Ryan Bradley, ND, MPH, director of the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Wellness Clinic at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, the University’s teaching clinic. “Patients involved in the study cited the benefits of trying different approaches to find the best ways to minimize the effects of type 2 diabetes. In many ways, that strategy mirrors our partnership with Group Health in this research study—working together to discover the best possible solutions.” Forty study participants received counseling on diet, exercise and glucose monitoring from four naturopathic physicians in addition to conventional diabetes care from their medical doctors, including prescription medications. Many of the participants also received stress-management care and dietary supplements. Researchers then compared these 40 participants with 329 patients receiving only conventional diabetes care. In six months and about four naturopathic treatment visits, participants demonstrated improved self-care,

more consistent monitoring of glucose, and improved moods. Hemoglobin A1c rates (a measure of blood-sugar control) were nearly a full percentage point lower for those patients. This compares with a drop of only 0.5

percent over the same time period for 329 clinically similar patients receiving only conventional diabetes care. The encouraging findings from this small observational study will need to be confirmed by a randomized trial with larger numbers of participants, according to Dr. Bradley. Finding more effective ways of treating type 2 diabetes is important because it is one of the top-10 causes of death in Americans and is costly to treat: $1 out of every $10 spent on health care in the United States is used to fight type 2 diabetes, at a cost of $178 billion every year. “Our number-one goal is to help patients,” adds Daniel Cherkin, PhD, a senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute. “Collaboration with our research colleagues at Bastyr University allows us to explore a broader range of ways to help meet the needs of our patients.” For more information, visit the virtual newsrooms at GroupHealthResearch. org and Bastyr.edu.

Cancer Prevention and Treatment An Integrative Approach

Natural Therapies

by Dr. Shawn Messonnier

O

f all pet diseases, cancer is the most feared. While modern science has been able to cure some variations—most commonly by surgical removal of small tumors— many cancers have usually advanced and spread by the time they are diagnosed. Most pets in advanced stages cannot be cured, but can be successfully treated, thus prolonging their life. Through choosing an integrative approach that combines natural therapies with conventional techniques, most cancer patients in my practice live one-and-a-half to two times longer than if the owners relied solely on conventional methods. Targeted natural therapies can not only make the conventional more effective, they work to reduce side effects and allow pets to feel much better.

Conventional Thinking

Cancer develops from damage to a cell’s DNA. Causes can include radiation and chemotherapy (the same techniques commonly used as treatments), viruses, toxins, stress, inherited defective genes and aging. Cells with damaged DNA either die (as they should) or continue to grow and multiply; cancer is a disease of the unregulated spreading of abnormal cell growth. Conventional therapies for pets include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. When feasible, applications quickly kill as many cancer cells as possible, putting the pet into remission. Deciding on the preferred treatment depends on such factors as the type of cancer, age of the pet, ease of administration of the treatment, cost and owner concerns.

www.sdpfd.com

28

San Diego Edition

When considering such a step, pet owners should have a serious discussion with their veterinary oncologist about the pros and cons of each option, including potential benefits for the pet. In general, pets experience fewer side effects from conventional cancer therapies than their human counterparts.

www.na-sd.com

Numerous natural therapies can be integrated into a holistic treatment protocol to help pet cancer patients. Pivotal basics outlined in this article are included in a more thorough explanation of options in The Natural Vet’s Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs. Diet is vital. Most pet foods, especially dry foods, contain excess grain carbohydrates and inadequate amounts of protein and fat. Most cancer patients do better when grain-based carbohydrates are reduced and protein and fat, specifically fatty acids such as fish oil, are increased. Fish oil is highly beneficial in killing cancer cells and inhibiting their spreading, along with relieving inflammation that can cause further cancer cell growth. Simply following the label’s dose for fish oil is not adequate, as this dose is designed to maintain normal-looking skin and hair, but not work medically to reduce inflammation and cell damage. The correct dosage varies with the weight of the pet, but in general, pets

with cancer benefit from 1,000 to 2,000 mg of EPA+DHA twice daily, based on the veterinarian’s recommendation. Antioxidants are also crucial in reducing oxidation that causes cell damage and creates cancer. Good supplements contain several different antioxidants, including vitamins and minerals, quercetin and other bioflavonoids, and Coenzyme Q-10. Adding antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits to the pet’s regular diet is similarly helpful. Good choices include dark green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts and brightly colored vegetables such as carrots and peppers. Similarly, supplements to boost the immune system can help a patient stay cancer-free as long as possible. Supplements such as green tea, medicinal mushrooms such as maitake or coriolus, vitamin D, astragalus and arabinogalactans are particularly helpful. Detoxifying herbs such as milk thistle and homeopathic detoxifying remedies such as berberis, nux vomica and lymphomyosot are also useful. Because cancer is a toxic disease, when conventional therapies add further toxins (such as chemotherapy and radiation) to the equation, the body can become easily overwhelmed. Therefore, an aggressive detoxification protocol is helpful, as well. These elements comprise a general protocol that is beneficial for most, if not all, pets diagnosed with cancer. Individualized therapy and choosing supplements specific to the type of cancer afflicting the pet are important. Every cancer is different, so every treatment will be different.

Cancer Prevention Tips

Pet parents can take several steps to reduce the risk of a pet contracting cancer. Feed them the best diet possible, devoid of chemical additives and byproducts. Reduce vaccinations as much as possible, which can damage a pet’s immune system. Also, avoid unnecessary prescription medications, including chemical flea and tick control products, which can also negatively affect functioning of the immune system. In combination, these measures work to reduce the toxic load to a pet’s body and support optimal health. Dr. Shawn Messonnier has authored numerous books, including The Natural Vet’s Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs and Breast Choices for the Best Chances. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that a single hour of operating a new gas-powered lawn mower emits the same volume of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides as 11 new cars, each driven for one hour.

Mow, Mow, Mow Your Lawn… Or Mow Less, Sustainably by Paul Tukey For some, mowing is the bane of summer; a choking, chugging chore to abhor. For others, it’s an artistic expression—the chance to maintain and admire a property’s carefully crafted aesthetic look while logging some laps around the lawn. Whether we enjoy it or prefer leaving the task to someone else, several considerations can make the experience less laborious, less polluting and even lighter on the budget as fuel prices rise. Start high and stay high. Resist the temptation to mow the family lawn to resemble a closely shaved golf green. Far better results are achieved by adjusting the machine’s blade to the top setting and leaving it there until after Labor Day. Taller grass in the spring shades the surface of the soil, so that crabgrass and other weed seeds can’t sprout as much. High levels in the summer conserve moisture and encourage deep root growth, so that the lawn becomes more drought-tolerant. The fastest way to harm a lawn is

by mowing too low—less than three inches for most grass species. Exceptions are Bermuda grass or seashore paspalum in the South, or bent grass in the North, all of which do best when mowed at one to two inches high. Fertilize naturally. Organic fertilizers derived from plant or animal byproducts work with the soil’s biology to feed the lawn slowly and evenly. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn, which quickly biodegrade to provide more free, natural lawn food.

The natural approach to nourishing a lawn requires less frequent mowing and makes it more adaptable to long dry spells. Synthetic chemical fertilizers, which are formulated to stimulate a lot of growth quickly, are designed to demand more mowing and watering. Get grass off of gas. If a lawn is a third of an acre (15,000 square feet) or less, consider this: Today’s “push” or motorless mowers are not our grandfathers’ heavy wood and steel models. Manufactured from high-grade plastics, lightweight metals and precision blades that rarely need sharpening, the modern mowers cut grass cleanly and are a breeze to use. They are the healthiest choice for people, lawn and planet. For larger acreage, new models powered by propane burn cleaner than gasoline-run engines. Paul Tukey is author of The Organic Lawn Care Manual and Tag, Toss & Run: 40 Classic Lawn Games. Find more tips at SafeLawns.org.
