I
t’s helpful to recall this when we sometimes feel like we’ve been hit by whelming tidal waves of life. Maintaining a high level of energy is required to thrive and live a joyous, meaningful life amidst it all. It helps to equip ourselves with a life raft of tender self care, understanding that it can make all the difference for ourselves and those we love. Our annual Healthy Living Guide issue of Natural Awakenings comes to the rescue powered by go-to resources ready to help your and your family realize the healthy life balance everyone deserves. This issue highlights integrative health leaders in our community that are dedicated to helping us achieve our best health and best self. Those able to help boost the quality of daily life include both caring natural health practitioners and professionals and providers of eco-friendly products and services. We even have a healthy living glossary to introduce readers to the wealth of natural healing modalities and treatments available. In our September feature article, “Ageless Being,” Kathleen Barnes reveals what national experts know about staying ever vibrant in mind, body and spirit. We also learn how to calculate our “real age” with a self-quiz about diet and lifestyle. Many of the physicians and practitioners in this issue believe in the individual’s ability to slow the aging process, having educated themselves on the latest age-defying research and recommendations. Did you know that many of our resident experts and advertisers serve our community through locally owned businesses? For every $100 you elect to spend locally rather than elsewhere, $68 comes back to our community, versus $43 if you buy from a national chain. Our local editorial supports local businesses that celebrate products and services made with safe, non-toxic, healing ingredients. Please join us in supporting these talented and good-hearted entrepreneurs. They love to educate and serve our community in many ways. A new social movement will arrive to serve Cincinnati on September 17 via a special screening of the groundbreaking documentary film PlantPure Nation at UC’s Center for Integrative Health and Wellness. The grassroots organizers are sparking local affiliate groups called PlantPure Pods in which members work together to promote the value of plant-based nutrition. Misguided industry and government entities have contributed to epidemic health care crises and PlantPure Nation’s “we the people” are collectively aiming to correct it one consumer at a time. I hope you hold onto this edition so that you have it at your fingertips all year long. You never know when you might be in need of a little TLC. Pass around extra copies to all those you wish to see grow into their future with health, grace and beauty, too.

Documentary Film Screening at the University of Cincinnati - PlantPure Nation
O
n September, 17th at the University of Cincinnati there will be a film screening and Q&A with Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Co-Author of the groundbreaking book, The China Study which details the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The documentary film PlantPure Nation tells the story of three people on a quest to spread the message of one of the most important health breakthroughs of all time. After renowned nutritional scientist and bestselling author T. Colin Campbell gives a stirring speech on the floor of the Kentucky House of Representatives, his son, Nelson, and Kentucky State Representative Tom Riner work together to propose a pilot program documenting the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Once the legislation goes into Committee, agribusiness lobbyists attempt to undermine it. Undeterred, Nelson decides to try his own pilot project in his hometown of Mebane, North Carolina. The effort is wildly successful. The filmmakers expose the powerful forces that stand in the way of a wider recognition of the healings powers of a plant-based diet. Connecticut Initiates Mattress Recycling Connecticut has introduced the nation’s firstever mattress recycling program to get old beds off the curb and into the renewable waste stream via Park City Green, a cavernous warehouse in Bridgeport where mattresses go to die and get reborn. One of only two mattress recycling facilities in the state, it employs workers that manually break down bedding parts, separating the materials into giant piles of foam, mounds of cotton and tall stacks of metal springs. All this gets shipped off to junk dealers to be recycled and reclaimed for later use in the metal industry or as backing for carpets. The city had been paying hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to pick up mattresses on trash day and break them apart for disposal, but that figure is expected to drop to zero and create jobs at the same time. Connecticut’s program is voluntary, so municipalities don’t have to participate. But because it’s already being paid for by consumers and the mattress industry, state officials expect the program to grow. Already, more than 60 Connecticut communities are participating.

A Third of U.S. Power May Be Wind by 2050 According to a new study by the U.S. Energy Department (Tinyurl.com/ EnergyDepartmentWindReport), wind power could provide more than a third of the nation’s electricity in a few decades, while posting a net savings in energy costs. Undersecretary for Technology and Energy Lynn Orr, Ph.D., states, “With continued commitment, wind can be the cheapest, cleanest option in all 50 states by 2050.” Wind power has tripled since 2000, and now supplies nearly 5 percent of the country’s electric power. The report says that it could dramatically reduce air pollution and go a long way toward meeting the country’s goals of slowing climate change. Meanwhile, Spanish engineers have invented the Vortex Bladeless wind turbine, a hollow straw that sticks up 40 feet from the ground and vibrates when the wind passes through it. Instead of using a propeller, the Vortex takes advantage of an aerodynamic effect called vorticity. The result is a turbine that’s 50 percent less expensive than a bladed model and is nearly silent. It’s not as efficient as conventional turbines, but more of them can be placed in the same amount of space, for a net gain of 40 percent in efficiency. Plus, with no gears or moving parts, maintenance is much easier and they are safer for bats and birds. Source: Wired

Artificial Sweeteners: Friend or Foe?
C
onventional thinking encourages everyone—especially people with diabetes—to avoid sugar-laden products and replace them with items containing artificial sweeteners. The conveyed impression is that avoiding sugar is good, and artificial sweeteners are safe substitutes. However, each artificial sweetener has its own dangers. Aspartame, also known as NutraSweet, increases levels of methanol and formaldehyde in human blood. It has been linked to worsening depression in people with mood disorders, to liver cancer in rats, and to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma in men. It has also been shown to be a carcinogenic agent when consumed in as little as one diet soda per day. Sucralose, also called Splenda, is produced in a process that chlorinates sugar. When ingested, the residual chlorine can kill important intestinal flora as well as changing the expression of some genes and possibly causing them to process important information improperly. Saccharin has been shown to alter intestinal bacteria and increase glucose intolerance—a condition that increases risk for developing diabetes and also tends to cause increased weight. There is much evidence that these chemical food additives are not safe for humans or animals. Many practicing doctors find that some of these ingredients can cause pain, especially headaches and migraines. Such conditions may appear to be chronic, continuing for long periods of time simply from the consumption of one or two diet drinks per week. These substances can also be addictive, and sudden stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms, including headaches. While any type of sugar, even in natural form, can cause inflammation in the body, there are safer alternatives. One of these is stevia, a natural plant sweetener that does not raise blood sugar levels. Hal S. Blatman, M.D., is the founder and medical director of the Blatman Health and Wellness Center. Support Groups Keep Artery Patients Mobile
R
esearch published in the Journal of the American Heart Association has determined that when peripheral artery disease patients engage in behavioral support groups that encourage exercise, they realize increased mobility. The researchers from Northwestern University followed 194 patients for a year, testing subjects at six months and again at 12 months. The patients were divided into two groups; one attended weekly intervention group meetings, while the control group attended weekly lectures. After six months, the researchers found that only 6.3 percent of those that attended the support group meetings experienced mobility loss, compared to 26.5 percent of those that didn’t attend the meetings. After one year, the support group attendees again showed positive results. The control group had 18.5 percent loss in mobility, while only 5.2 percent of the support group attendees did.

Chamomile Tea Helps Us Live Longer

I
n a study of 1,677 Mexican-American men and women over the age of 65 from the Southwestern U.S., researchers have found that drinking chamomile tea decreases the risk of earlier mortality by an average of 29 percent. Researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch followed the study population for seven years. Among those tested, 14 percent drank chamomile tea regularly. These were primarily women, and those women that drank chamomile tea experienced a 33 percent reduced mortality during the study period. The small group of men that drank the chamomile tea regularly did not register a significant difference in mortality. Chamomile also has a long history of use in folk medicine and is primarily used to settle digestion and calm the mind. It is a leading natural herbal tea in many countries and contains no caffeine. While various species may be used, chamomile tea is traditionally made by infusing the flowers of either German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) or Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) into hot water. In Spanish-speaking regions, chamomile tea is often referred to as manzanilla tea—consumed in Mexico and other Spanish cultures for centuries.

StickNotwith Natural Iodine All Supplements are the Same The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.
Causes of Iodine Deficiency
Radiation
Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation
Low-Sodium Diets
Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion
Iodized Table Salt
Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air
Bromine
A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid
Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil
A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.
What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.

n Thursday, September 17, a food revolution will take place at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine’s Kresge Auditorium. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., author of the best-seller book The China Study and leading authority on the relationship of diet to disease, will kick off the event with a talk to the college faculty. Following the talk, the documentary film PlantPure Nation will show at 7 p.m. to the general public. The film examines political and economic factors that suppress information about the benefits of plant-based nutri14
tion. It also connects to larger issues such as medical practices, farming and food deserts. Through stories, the film communicates a vision of a plant-based world and diet, but it also delivers a powerful, action-oriented charge. The general public along with students and faculty are encouraged to secure their tickets in advance for this special showing. The film will be followed immediately by a Q&A session with Dr. Campbell and his son, film director and writer Nelson Campbell. The official companion cookbook for the film will be available for purchase

Through the creation of a network of local chapters or PlantPure Pods, people in cities across the U.S. can work together to promote and practice plant-based nutrition in their communities. In each city where the film screens, a pod gets created. Each pod comes with a web platform that has functionality Nelson Campbell describes as a “cross between Meetup and Facebook with a videobased content stream.” Each city’s pod is a foundational element of local action for people following a plant-based diet. Nelson Campbell says, “Pods provide ongoing support to pod members to stick to the wellness program and connect members to each other and countless local and national health and wellness resources.”

The Jumpstart component of the movement includes pre-and post-biometric cholesterol testing, access to the film, short daily videos from a medical advisor and other informative videos about culinary and wellness issues. It also includes ten days of expertly-prepared plant-based lunches and dinners that participants take with them and eat at home as they begin the wellness program. If participants prefer, they can prepare the meals themselves using the cookbook that is included in the program. Sign up is available through local PlantPure Pods or the website. When asked how the movement can help people overcome resistance to making dietary changes, Nelson Camp-
bell reflects, “We need to communicate this health message so people can see how this idea aligns with their core values. We have built a supportive community around this to help people stay on track.”
The Cookbook
A key element of the Jumpstart program is a cookbook authored by Kim Campbell, daughter-in-law of Dr. T. Colin Campbell and wife of Nelson Campbell. She is skilled in creating flavors and textures that appeal to mainstream consumers adopting a plantbased diet for the first time. Kim has followed a plant-based diet for 25 years after earning a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in human service studies with a minor in nutrition. Her PlantPure Nation Cookbook features more than 150 extensively tested, 100-percent plant-based recipes from appetizers to entrees to desserts. “I’ve included lots of personal tips, cooking tricks and sample grocery lists to help users transition to a healthier way of cooking and eating,” says Kim Campbell.
Solving a Crisis
Nelson Campbell says PlantPure Nation’s primary message is meant to awaken people to health issues. “We need to save ourselves, our country and our planet. It’s up to us, and change is imperative now.” He believes we urgently need a new paradigm to solve social problems. Through the PlantPure Nation movement, they are creating a grassroots solution and not relying on corporations or the government for change. “We are engaging millions of people in solving the U.S. health crisis,” Nelson Campbell says. He believes this is a unique way to create positive, healthy change, saying, “People are desperate for a new approach to solving problems in this country; This connects us to who we truly are and then to others, and enables us to take control of our future.” Dr. Campbell adds, “We are launching this movement by raising awareness and offering options for individuals to
take control of their health. Our goal is a world of healthy people, strong economies, sustainable food systems and an environment that’s healing instead of degrading.” Dr. Campbell’s son Nelson smiles and shares, “Change is coming, and we are creating a new opportunity around it. All of us together are the change.”

n a nutshell, that’s the philosophy of visionary women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, of Yarmouth, Maine, as explored in her latest book, Goddesses Never Age. “We’re long overdue for a paradigm shift about how we feel about growing older,” says Northrup. “You can change your future by adopting a new, ageless attitude that will help you flourish physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We don’t have to buy into modern medicine’s promotion of the idea of the pathology of aging.” One of Northrup’s primary admonitions: “Don’t tell anyone how old you are. Another birthday means nothing.”

Our Western society fosters a belief system that we will become decrepit,

frail and mentally feeble at a certain age. “When my mother turned 50, her mailbox suddenly filled with ads for adult diapers, walkers and long-term care insurance,” Northrup quips. The point is well taken. Think vibrant, healthy, gorgeous and yes, sexy Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, Chris Rock and Brooke Shields—all 50 or older—as the targets of ads for Depend. We’re living and working longer, and many of us are feeling, looking and staying young longer. So is 60 the new 40? Yes, say State University of New York at Stony Brook researchers, and further note that we’re generally leading longer and healthier lives. Centenarians are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. In the 2010 census, 53,364 people had surpassed their 100th year, an increase of 40
percent over the 1980 census, and more than 80 percent of them are women. The National Institute on Aging projects that this number could increase tenfold or more by 2050. What we think of as “old” has changed. Many baby boomers refuse to buy into the mythology of aging, bristle at being called senior citizens and especially dislike being called elderly. Their position is backed by science. Stem cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., author of Biology of Belief and currently a visiting professor at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, in Auckland, is best known for promoting the concept that DNA can be changed by belief, for good or ill. Lipton explains that we all have billions of stem cells designed to repair or replace damaged—and aging—tissues and organs. “[These cells] are profoundly influenced by our thoughts and perceptions about the environment,” Lipton explains. “Hence our beliefs about aging can either interfere with or enhance stem cell function, causing our physiological regeneration or decline.” “Yes, we are destined to grow older, but decrepitude and what we call aging is an optional state,” Northrup adds. “Our genes, nutrition and environment are under our control far more than we may have thought.” More, she says, “Words are powerful. Don’t talk yourself into believing your brain is turning to mush just because you are over 40.”
Take Control of the Body
“Manage the four horsemen of the aging apocalypse,” encourages nutrition and longevity expert Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., a Los Angeles board-certified nutritionist and author of The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer. He says the aging process, including disease, loss of physical or mental function and the general breakdown of systems, is caused by one or more of four factors: oxidative damage (literally rusty cells); inflammation; glycation (excess sugar, metabolic syndrome); and stress. “Collectively, they damage cells and DNA, wear down organs and systems, deeply damage the vascular pathways that deliver blood and oxygen to the entire body, and even shrink brain size,” explains Bowden. While it may seem like a tall order to make lifestyle changes that vanquish

these four horsemen, Bowden says they can be broken into manageable elements by employing an arsenal of healthful weapons: whole foods, nutrients, stressreduction techniques, exercise, detoxification and relationship improvement. “All of these actually do double duty, battling more than one of the four processes that can effectively shorten your life,” he reports, based on his 25 years of study.
Oxidative Damage
Consider what rust does to metal. That’s what free radical oxygen molecules do to cells. Over time, they damage them and cause aging from within. “Oxidative damage plays a major role in virtually every degenerative disease of aging, from Alzheimer’s to cancer to heart disease and diabetes, even immune dysfunction,” says Bowden. His recommended key to destroying free radicals is a diet rich in antioxidants, including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy fats, nuts, grass-fed meats and organic dairy products. Avoid environmental free radicals that show up in toxic chemicals by eating as much organic food as possible and avidly avoiding residues of the poisonous pesticides and herbicides sprayed on crops eaten by people and livestock.
Inflammation
Long-term inflammation is a silent killer because it operates beneath the radar, often unnoticed, damaging blood vessel walls. Like oxidative damage, inflam-
mation is a factor in all the degenerative diseases associated with aging, says Bowden. His suggestion: First, get a C-reactive protein (CRP) test to determine the levels of inflammation in our body. A CRP level over 3 milligrams/liter indicates a high risk of a heart attack. Anti-inflammatory foods like onions, garlic, leafy greens, tomatoes, beans, nuts and seeds have all been widely scientifically proven to reduce chronic inflammation.
Glycation
This is the result of excessive sugar that glues itself to protein or fat molecules, leaving a sticky mess that creates advanced glycation end (AGE) products that damage all body systems and are acknowledged culprits in the dreaded diseases associated with aging. Bowden’s basic answer is to minimize intake of sugar and simple carbs; anything made with white flour or white rice. Also avoid fried dishes and any foods cooked at high temperatures that actually skip the glycation production in the body and deliver harmful AGEs directly from the food. He advises taking 1,000 mg of carnosine (available in health food stores) daily to prevent glycation.
Stress
The long-term effects of physical, mental or emotional stress are tremendously damaging to the human physiology. Sustained exposure to the stress hormone cortisol can shrink parts of the brain,
damage blood vessels, increase blood sugar levels, heart rate and blood pressure and contribute to chronic inflammation, according to well-established science recorded in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Bowden warns, “Stress management is not a luxury.” In its many forms, including prayer, meditation and breathing exercises, it should be part of any agelessness program. Deep, restful sleep is as vital a component as ending toxic relationships, having a nurturing circle of friends and doing familiar, gentle exercise such as yoga or tai chi. Overall, Bowden adds, “Rather than thinking of such endeavors as anti-aging, I strive to embody the concept of age independence. I admire former Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who resigned from the court when he reached age 90 because he wanted to play more tennis.” Bowden recommends embracing the concept of “squaring the curve”, meaning that instead of anticipating and experiencing a long downhill slope of poor health leading to death, “I look at a long plateau of health, with a steep dropoff at the end.” Wellness guru Dr. Michael Roizen, chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, contends that although our chronological age can’t be changed, “Your ‘real age’ [calculated from data he collected from 60 million people] is the result of a wide variety of factors that are within your control. Dietary choices alone can make you 13 years younger or

older than your actual age.” Roizen adds uncontrolled portion sizes, tobacco use and physical inactivity to the list of life-shortening lifestyle options.
Align with Spirit
“If you don’t have some kind of spiritual foundation, literally, God help you,” says Northrup. “God isn’t confined to a book or a church, mosque or synagogue. Divinity is the creative loving, vital flow of life force that we’re all part of and connected to. Our bodies are exquisite expressions meant to embody, not deny our spirits.” Touch, pleasure and sex can be part of it, too. Individuals that have the most fulfilling sex lives live the longest, according to researchers conducting the University of California, Riverside’s Longevity Project. “Pleasure comes in infinite forms,” says Northrup. “It can mean the exquisite taste of a pear or the sound of an angelic symphony, the kiss of sun on skin, the laughter of a child, spending time with friends or creating a pastel landscape. When you experience pleasure, God comes through and you become aware of your divine nature. You’ll find that joy comes in ways that are unique to you.” Connection with the natural world is an essential element of agelessness, says Northrup. “The human body evolved to walk on the Earth, drinking its water, breathing its air and basking in its sunlight.” The bottom line is, “Agelessness is all about vitality. Taking all the right supplements and pills, or getting the right procedure isn’t the prescription for antiaging,” says this renowned physician. “It’s ageless living that brings back a sense of vibrancy and youthfulness.” We could live to be well over 100 years old and, as Northrup likes to paraphrase Abraham Hicks, of The Law of Attraction fame, “Wouldn’t you rather have your life end something like this: ‘Happy-healthy, happy-healthy, happyhealthy, dead.’ Isn’t that a lot better than suffering sickness, decrepitude and frailty for years?” Kathleen Barnes is the author of numerous books on natural health, her latest being Food Is Medicine: 101 Prescriptions from the Garden. Compute Your Real Age Lifestyle choices can make our bodies older, or younger, than our number of orbits around the sun, according to Michael Roizen, a doctor of internal medicine and author of This is Your Do-Over: The 7 Secrets of Losing Weight, Living Longer, and Getting a Second Chance at the Life You Want. “Seventy percent of aging is in the simple things you do or don’t do,” he maintains. Here are a few sobering examples: n An unresolved major life stressor, such as a divorce, being sued, the death of a close relative or other traumatic events, can add up to 32 years to chronological age. Managing the stress adds a relatively insignificant two years. n Swap out saturated fats (cheese and meat) for monounsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts and avocados). Subtract 2.5 years from chronological age. n Get up out of the chair every 15 minutes and also take a 10-minute walk every two hours. Subtract 2.1 years from chronological age. n Have close friends. Subtract 2.1 years from chronological age. Take the Real Age test at ShareCare.com/RealAge.

Whole Child Sports Free Play Earns the Winning Score by Luis Fernando Llosa

any parents concerned that their children are getting engulfed by social media often turn to sports to spark physical activity. They scramble to sign their toddlers up for swimming and tennis lessons, T-ball and soccer practice, hoping these activities will teach their kids about motivation and leadership, while getting them off the couch and out the door. They hope that sports will be a conduit for their kids to learn what it takes to strive, drive toward a goal and succeed in later life. As a result, more than 40 million kids across America are engaged in organized play. But youth sports are not a panacea; while parental intentions are good, they sometimes don’t realize the potential for negative consequences. Those that have studied the phenomenon believe that youth sports—which on the surface, appear to provide a perfect environment for children to learn life lessons and develop critical social and physical skills—might hamper our children’s healthy physical, social, psychic and creative development.

It seems that many young kids playing on teams today are over-coached by controlling, command-oriented adults. As Jenny Levy, head coach of the University of North Carolina’s 2013 NCAA champion women’s lacrosse team at Chapel Hill puts it, “Kids are kind of like overbred dogs, mimicking the drills we run in practice. They aren’t wired to think creatively. They do what they know. What’s safe.” This kind of behavior can start at an early age, when kids should be engaging in free play with minimal adult supervision in unstructured settings. Parenting expert Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting and The Soul of Discipline, says, “Parents are giving in to enormous societal pressure to push kids into high-performance sports settings several times a week. It’s an ‘arms race’ of sorts, with the NaturalCinci.com
clear victims being the kids themselves that are robbed of their childhoods.” There’s a much more holistic way kids can experience play, including sports. An American Academy of Pediatrics study attests that free and unstructured play is healthy and essential for helping children reach important social, emotional and cognitive developmental milestones, plus managing stress and becoming resilient. Payne observes, “In free play, children have to actively problem solve and take one another’s feelings into account if the play is to be successful. In sports, the social problem solving is largely extrinsic, facilitated by coaches, referees or parents. During a child’s formative stages, between the ages of 5 and 12, having the freedom to develop, create and innovate is critical.” Creativity isn’t limited to only younger children. How sports are taught in this country at all levels, right up through college, often inhibits athletic creativity and problem solving— as Levy has noticed year after year in the freshmen players she trains—rather than fostering these attributes.
Why are most American kids getting turned off by sports by the time they should be really leaping into it? ~Steve Biddulph, author, Raising Boys and Raising Girls
A Better Alternative
It’s crucial to consider the whole child, not just the budding athlete. To revive a child’s imagination and create better conditions for developing creativity, resiliency and flexibility, contemplate the option of taking a child out of organized youth sports for a while to provide the time, space and opportunity to rediscover childhood play and games. Then support them in re-entering organized athletics when they’re a bit older and more physically and emotionally ready. Also, some kids that get heavily involved in highly structured youth sports too early may be prone to behavioral problems and serious physical injuries. The best thing a parent can do for a young child that is active and interested
in sports is roll up their sleeves and join in unscripted backyard or playground family play. Kids thrive in the attention offered from mom or dad, regardless of parental athletic skill levels. Also, organize play dates with other neighborhood kids of varying ages, because they love to learn from each other, including how to work out disagreements. Once kids are socially, emotionally and physically ready, organized sports can be an amazing platform for funfilled learning. Having already experienced healthy free play, a child will be ready for and thrive in a more focused, competitive, organized and structured play environment. Fortified by a creative foundation in earlier years, a youngster is better able to identify and express their own mind, body and spirit. raditional sports stadiums and arenas generate a huge carbon footprint. Multiple sources concur that during a single football game, a 78,000-seat stadium can consume 65,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, and discarded cardboard, plastic and paper; in-stadium food and beverage containers; and tailgating debris that includes cans and bottles leave behind a mountain of waste. A dozen years ago, the pioneering Philadelphia Eagles enlisted the help of the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to begin a persistent push to their goal of going green. Today, the NRDC publishes the Greening Advisor guidebooks on green operating practices for all professional teams in Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League and Major League Soccer, plus the U.S. Tennis Association, and has expanded to include college sports.
Food
Stadium food has always been part of the fan experience, but it’s possible to eat sensibly and well with options like the roasted turkey sandwich at AT&T Park, in San Francisco, where concessionaires source locally and compost leftovers.
Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Edition
NaturalCinci.com
Veggie burgers, vegan cheesesteaks and sushi have also found their way onto game-day menus to add a change of pace for fans, says Julianne Soviero, author of Unleash Your True Athletic Potential. The growing interest shown by the sports industry in composting offers enormous potential benefits, and not a moment too soon, says Allen Hershkowitz, Ph.D., co-founder of the Green Sports Alliance and director of the NRDC Sports Project. Using recyclable containers counts—New York City’s venerable Yankee Stadium reduced its trash load by 40 percent by switching to biodegradable cups and service ware. PepsiCo supported the upgrade by exchanging its conventional plastic bottle for a bio-based version made from agricultural waste.
Lights
At New York’s Oncenter War Memorial Arena, the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch pro team skates under LED lights. “They make the arena brighter. It’s easier to see the puck,” says defenseman Joey Mormina. “The fun light show that follows goals adds energy for the crowd and players.” LED lighting provides improved clarity in TV transmissions and sports action photos and doesn’t create
soft spots on the ice, like traditional lights. “Utica and Binghamton teams switched to LED after playing in our arena,” comments Jim Sarosy, chief operating officer for the Crunch.
Water
“The Crunch is the first pro hockey team to skate on recycled rainwater,” Sarosy adds. “It’s collected from the roof, stored in three central reservoirs in the basement and pumped into the Zamboni machine for resurfacing the ice.” The practice also diverts rainwater from overworked sewer systems. The first pro football stadium to earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, the San Francisco 49ers Levi’s Stadium features a 27,000-square-foot rooftop garden to help control water runoff. Home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and Kings, the Staples Center has swapped out 178 flush urinals for waterless models, reducing annual water usage by 7 million gallons. Like the Eagles, the Florida Marlins pro baseball team, in Miami, now uses 50 percent less water via low-flow plumbing fixtures. Also, the stadium’s upgraded landscape design lessens outdoor irrigation needs by 60 percent. The University of Georgia likes keeping its grass green, but hates wasteful water dispensers. Its football field is now watered via an underground irrigation system that saves a million gallons a year. Soil moisture sensors indicate when watering is needed.
More Creative Practices
Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles, now boasts more than 11,000 solar panels and 14 wind turbines that combined, generate more than four times the energy used for all home games in a season. The staff uses green cleaning products and has increased recycling more than 200 percent since 2010. Most creatively, the carbon costs of team travel are offset via mitigation by financing tree plantings in their home state and purchasing seedlings for a wildlife refuge in Louisiana. The Seattle Mariners Safeco Field’s new scoreboard uses 90 percent less power than its predecessor and the Arizona Cardinals pro football team
provides bags for tailgating fans to use for recycling. Five NBA arenas have achieved LEED certification—Phillips Arena (Atlanta Hawks), Toyota Center (Houston Rockets), American Airlines Arena (Miami Heat), Amway Center (Orlando Magic) and Rose Garden (Portland
Trail Blazers). The goal of a cleaner, healthier planet is achievable with systemic shifts like these as more pro and collegiate sports teams score green points. Connect with our freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.

Safe Seafood Solutions
ith the demand for seafood outpacing what can safely be harvested in the wild, half the seafood we eat comes from aquaculture, says Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D., administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Yet, farmed seafood has a reputation for uneven quality and questionable farming practices. A primary reason is that much of what Americans buy comes from Asia, where aquaculture is less stringently managed. Meanwhile, domestic aquaculture provides only about 5 percent of the seafood consumed here, according to NOAA.
U.S. Farmed Seafood That’s Safe and Sustainable by Judith Fertig
Wild-caught fish from pure waters is the gold standard of seafood, but sustainable populations from healthy waters are shrinking. That’s one reason why fish farms are appearing in unusual places—barramundi flourish on a Nebraska cattle ranch, shrimp in chilly Massachusetts and inland tilapia in Southern California.
If we want to eat safer, sustainable, farmed seafood, there are two solutions. One is to purchase farmed fish raised in the U.S., says Sullivan. The agency’s FishWatch consumer information service assures: “If it’s harvested in the United States, it’s inherently sustainable as a result of the rigorous U.S. management process that ensures fisheries are continuously monitored, improved and sustainable.” Whole Foods Markets have found that farming seafood (aquaculture) can provide a consistent, high-quality, yearround supply of healthy and delicious protein. Accordingly, “When it’s done right, aquaculture can be environmentally friendly and offer a crucial way to supplement wild-caught fish supplies. On the other hand, poor farming practices such as the overuse of chemicals and antibiotics and those that cause water pollution and other negative impacts on the environment are bad news.” A second solution is to consult with a trusted fishmonger

The Green Fish Farmer
Chefs like Rick Moonen, who owns RM Seafood, in Las Vegas, are getting behind U.S. aquaculture farms that do it right, raising healthy, sustainable and delicious fish. Moonen recently became a brand ambassador for True North Salmon, a farm system that integrates the way nature keeps fish healthy and fresh. “They have a salmon farm near a mussel farm near a kelp farm, mimicking the way these three species interact in the wild,” says Moonen. The best seafood farms take what geography and climate offer—ocean inlets, a natural spring and a natural depression in the land or indoor controlled freshwater tanks—and use clean feed. With no antibiotics, non-GMO food (free of genetic modification) in the right ratio, good water quality and creative ways to use the effluent, they employ green farming practices to raise fish and shellfish that, in turn, are healthy to eat. The Atlantic coasts of Maine and Canada are where families have been making their living from the sea for centuries, says Alan Craig, of Canada’s True North Salmon Company. “The fish are fed pellets made from all-natural, nonGMO sources with no dyes, chemicals or growth hormones added. Underwater cameras monitor the health of the fish to prevent overfeeding.” True North Salmon follows a threebay system, similar to crop rotation on land. Each bay is designated for a particular age of fish: young salmon, market-ready fish and a fallow, or empty, bay, breaking the cycle of any naturally occurring diseases and parasites. Robin Hills Farm, near Ann Arbor, Michigan, offers vegetable, meat, egg and fruit community supported agriculture, U-pick fruit and a pair of stocked farm ponds. Farm Manager Mitzi Koors explains that the ponds are a way to leverage natural resources, add another income stream and attract visitors. “We first discovered a low-lying area that would become a beautiful pond with a little work,” Koors relates. “We then expanded to two close ponds that don’t connect, to keep the older fish
raised on at least six months of nonGMO organic feed separate from the newer fish. The ponds are spring fed, providing a great environment for trout.” In northeastern Nebraska, five generations of the Garwood family have traditionally raised cattle and produced corn and tomatoes. To keep the farm thriving and sustainable, they have had to think outside the row crop. Today, they’re growing something new—barramundi, or Australian yellow perch. They built a warehouse that now holds 18, 10,000-gallon fish tanks full of growing fish. A Maryland company provides old-fashioned cow manure and leftover grain sorghum from area ethanol plants to create algae, naturally non-GMO, to use as biofuel and fish food. “People prefer to eat locally raised food, even if it’s fish in Nebraska,” says Scott Garwood. The sophistication of closed containment systems like the Garwoods use
means that chefs, too, can raise their own fish, besides growing their own herbs and vegetables. California Chef Adam Navidi, owner of the Oceans & Earth restaurant, in Yorba Linda, also runs nearby Future Foods Farms, encompassing 25 acres of herbs, lettuces, assorted vegetables and tank-raised tilapia. Baby greens, not GMO products, help feed the fish, while nitrates from the ammonia-rich fish waste fertilize the crops. The fish wastewater filters through the crops and returns to the fish tanks in an efficient, conservation-driven system that produces healthy, organic food. “Someday, chefs will be known both by their recipes and the methods used to produce their food,” Navidi predicts. Remove from heat and cool slightly. When mixture is warm, cut in butter and whisk together. Add parsley and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over fish and asparagus. Healthy Tip: Pacific cod has a very mild flavor and belongs to the same fish family as haddock and pollock. All are good sources of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins B6 and B12. Cod liver oil is one of the best sources of vitamin D. People that eat fish tend to eat fewer calories and less saturated fat. Fish can help to prevent inflammation, reduce cholesterol and help maintain normal blood pressure. Recipe courtesy of Mary Rasmussen, integrative health coach at Alliance Integrative Medicine. COMMUNICATION TRAINING FOR HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
I
neffective communication is at the root of most relationship problems. Conflict, dissatisfaction, and despair can occur even when the people love each other or have generally good overall working relationships. We all yearn to be heard, loved, cared for, supported and respected. Disconnection, loneliness, conflict , competition and arguments about who is “right” too often cloud our worlds, robbing us of the joy, connection, mutuality, predictability and trust that we seek. Effective communication can be learned; and we are excited to share the skills with you. Our Communication workshops offer skills and perspectives which overlap those of Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., summarized in the popular Non-Violent Communication, A Language of Life .We join Marshall in believing that we are all fundamentally loving, caring, and empathetic persons; but that our normative beliefs, language, and habits of thought can impair our ability to manifest this in our real world. Fortunately, we can all learn how to replace old patterns with new and more effective ones. Our communication trainings offer perspectives and skills allowing one to connect across differences, with improved self-awareness, clearer self-expression, better understanding and no-judgmental acceptance of others, improved conflict resolution and teamwork, and delightfully improved relationships. Communication Training is available through consultation with individuals or couples, workshops in our offices, or in programs at your workplace, church, or other location. See ad, page 23.

here has been much research published on the benefits of meditation, forgiveness, breath work and the effects of stress on health. It is our passion to make this knowledge available to our clients so they can evaluate the best program or practice for them. All of our programs can be measured in terms of client results by using the HeartMath® emWave2® which measures heart rate variability, which reflects the “feeling” state of the client. As clients see the result of their work in real time, they are guided to make changes in breath or activate heart feelings to improve the results. The goal is to obtain a more resilient response, including love, peace, more creativity and the ability to stop the damaging effects of stress before it causes physical or mental damage. ore people are looking for alternatives to sickness care than ever before. The “go-to” place in Northern Kentucky that provides well care with an educational twist is Practitioner Victoria Smith at her office Significant Healing Well Care Practice. The practice offers education and suggestions that support the cornerstone of health, fitness, digestion and wellness, with easy to understand and easy to implement systems. Many people are affected with varying degrees of ‘unwellness’: sluggishness, digestive dysfunction, joint and muscle pain, weight gain, headaches, hormonal changes and fatigue along with other conditions that stand in the way of living life to the fullest. This is exactly why, after suffering some of these symptoms herself in the 90’s, Victoria Smith set out on her journey to not only educate herself about the body and how it works, but remarkably was able to restore herself and reclaim her vibrant life! Today she shares this education and experience, having helped thousands over the years. As a Board Certified Holistic Practitioner, she helps others discover the causes behind symptoms using holistic technology such as iridology, kinesiology, herbology, glycobiology, lymphology, reflexology, protomorphology, nutrition, sclerology and more. By reviewing health history, using technology and listening to client’s concerns, she works collaboratively to develop individualized, easy to understand well care plans. Well Care Plans may include nutritional supplements, exercise, rest, dietary enhancements, healing baths and more. Victoria has a remarkable ability to take a complex situation and break it down in easy to understand language. A whole body, whole lifestyle approach is offered. How to understand food ingredients and labels, balancing micro and macro nutrients, preparing grocery lists, menus and eating smart in restaurants are all valuable education offered that may help in balancing weight, improving energy and overall health. Learning to avoid environmental exposures while purchasing food, cleaning supplies and personal care products can have a long term impact. This gives her clients the ability to make good choices for a lifetime. Support staff includes Personal Trainers, Licensed Massage Therapist, Nutritional Consultants and a Reflexologist. Fitness focuses on strengthening the body, improving balance and flexibility and increasing endurance and vitality; which may provide the gift of continued flexibility and energy. Massage and Reflexology offer therapeutic touch to release stiff, sore muscles, stimulate the immune system and move the lymphatic system, which enables the release of toxins and relieves stress and pain. Significant Healing also features a successful health store onsite which includes fresh, non-GMO, low carb options as well as nutritional supplement that can help detoxify the body, meet the body’s requirements for vitamins and minerals, strengthen the body’s ability to heal and ward off illness and disease. Natural Living Glossary Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of meridians. Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of lifeforce. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs. Alexander Technique: A system of re-educating the body and mind to support and facilitate proper posture and ease of movement. Through gentle manual guidance, accompanied by verbal directions, the Alexander teacher coaches the student to become aware of unnecessary tension and to unlearn longstanding patterns of movement. The Alexander Technique is used to help improve chronic conditions such as back, shoulder or neck pain, nervous tension, poor coordination, breathing problems and vocal strain. It is frequently used by athletes and performing artists to improve performance level. Alkaline Water: Drinking water that has been treated through the use of a water ionizer. Proponents of alkaline water believe that high acidity in the body contributes to a number of physical illnesses and conditions, from fatigue and weight gain to more serious disorders. They believe that drinking alkaline water can help resolve these health problems by raising the body’s pH level. Aromatherapy: An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs 42
and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety, as well as a wide range of other ailments. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to bathwater. Often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology and chiropractic or other holistic treatments. Art Therapy: Uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being and to deepen self-awareness. The therapist makes a diagnosis and determines treatment plans by encouraging a client to express his or her feelings and unconscious thoughts through the nonverbal creative process and by observing the forms and content created. Ayurveda: The oldest medical system known to man, and a comprehensive spiritual teaching practiced in India for 4,000 years. Ayurveda focuses on achieving and maintaining perfect health via the balance of the elements air, fire and water; illness is considered an excess of any element. A patient’s body type, determined according to Ayurvedic principles, is the basis for individualized dietary regimens and other preventive therapeutic interventions. Ayurvedic prescriptions might include purification procedures for the restoration of biological rhythms; expanded consciousness through meditation; nutritional counseling; stress reduction; enhancing neuromuscular conditions; and behavioral modification. Bioenergetics: A psychotherapy that works through the body to engage the emotions. Performing specified postures and exercises causes the release of layers of chronic muscular tension and defensiveness, termed “body armor.” The unlocking of feelings creates the opportunity for understanding and integrating them. Biofeedback: A relaxation technique that monitors internal body states and

is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension), with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving, relaxing, etc., they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The treatment of the symptoms of menopause (and its male equivalent, andropause) through the use of hormones that have the same chemical structure as those naturally produced by the body. Many compounding pharmacies have staff trained in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which is thought by its proponents to have fewer risks and side effects than traditional methods of hormone replacement. BodyTalk: Developed by chiropractor/acupuncturist John Veltheim, BodyTalk is based upon bio-energetic psychology, dynamic systems theory, Chinese medicine and applied kinesiology. By integrating a series of tapping, breathing and focusing techniques, BodyTalk is thought to help the body synchronize and balance its systems and strengthens the body’s innate knowledge of self-repair. BodyTalk is used to address a range of health challenges, including fibromyalgia, infections, parasites, chronic fatigue, allergies, addictions and cellular damage. Practitioners are usually licensed massage therapists (LMT) or bodyworkers. Bodywork: Massage and the physical practices of yoga are perhaps the best-known types of bodywork; both have proven successful in relieving tension and stress, promoting blood flow, loosening stiff muscles and stimulating the organs. Massage therapies encompass countless techniques, including Swedish massage, shiatsu and
Rolfing. The same is true for yoga. Other types of bodywork include martial arts practices like aikido, ki aikido and Tai chi chuan. Some others are the Alexander Technique, Aston patterning, Bowen, Breema bodywork, Feldenkrais method, Hellerwork, polarity therapy, Rosen method, Rubenfeld synergy and Trager. Finding bodywork that improves mental and physical health is a highly individual process. Several types may be combined for the greatest benefit. Chelation Therapy: A painless, nonsurgical medical procedure intended to improve metabolic and circulatory function by removing undesirable heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper from the body. A series of intravenous injections of the synthetic amino acid EDTA are administered, usually in an osteopathic or medical doctor’s office. The EDTA are thought to block excess free radical production, protecting tissues and organs from further damage. Over time, proponents say, injections may halt the progress of the underlying condition that triggers the development of various degenerative conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. More recently, chelation therapy also has been used to help reverse symptoms of atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by removing obstructive plaque built up in the circulatory system. Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest and most complete systems of holistic health care. It combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise, along with the recognition that wellness in mind, body and emotions depends on the harmonious flow of life-force energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Chiropractic: Based on the premise that proper structural alignment permits free flow of nerve activity in the body. When spinal vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves radiating from it, potentially leading to
diminished function and illness. Misalignment can be caused by physical trauma, poor posture and stress. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment. Colon Therapy: An internal bath that washes away old toxic waste accumulated along the walls of the colon. It is administered with pressurized water by a professional using special equipment. One colonic irrigation is the equivalent of approximately four to six enemas and cleans out matter that collects in the pockets and kinks of the colon. The treatment is used both as a corrective process and for disease prevention. Proponents may use colonics for ailments such as constipation, psoriasis, acne, allergies, headaches and the common cold. Conscious Living: As we become increasingly aware of the interdependence of humans, animals and the planet, progressive businesses are concerning themselves with far more than the bottom line. They know that today’s consumers are willing to invest in what they believe in, from fair-trade goods to animal-friendly and environmentally sound products and services. Counseling/Psychotherapy: These terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who offer advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling techniques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice. Craniosacral Therapy (CST): A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: that the bones of the skull can be manipulated, because they never completely fuse; and that the
pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect variations in that pulse. CST is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning difficulties, dyslexia and hyperactivity. Crystal and Gem Therapy: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. They also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of “layingon of stones,” practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow. Dance/Movement Therapy: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote self-esteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and physical disabilities. In wide use in the United States, this modality is becoming established around the world. Dentistry (Holistic): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. The oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry often incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing, and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and often recommending the removal of) silver-mercury fillings. Detoxification: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible

to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): A self-help procedure founded by Gary Craig that combines fingertip tapping of key acupuncture meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue or health challenge. Unresolved, or “stuck,” negative emotions, caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system, are seen as major contributors to most physical pains and diseases. These can remain stagnant and trapped until released by the tapping. EFT is portable and easy to memorize, so it can be done anywhere. Energy Healing: The art and practice of realigning and re-attuning the body between the physical and the etheric and auric fields to assist in natural healing processes. Working directly with the energy field in and around the body, the practitioner is thought to channel and direct energy into the cells, tissues and organs of the patient’s body to effect healing on physical and nonphysical levels simultaneously. Sessions may or may not involve the physical laying on of hands. Environmental Medicine: Explores the role of dietary and environmental allergens in health and illness. Factors such as dust, mold, chemicals and certain foods may cause allergic reactions that can dramatically influence diseases, ranging from asthma and hay fever to headaches and depression. Enzyme Therapy: Can be an important first step in restoring health and well-being by helping to remedy digestive problems. Plant and pancreatic enzymes are used in complementary ways to improve digestion and absorption of essential nutrients. Treatment includes enzyme supplements, coupled with a healthy diet that features whole foods. Feldenkrais® Method: Helps students straighten out what founder Moshe Feldenkrais calls, “kinks in the brain.” Kinks are learned movement patterns that no longer serve a constructive purpose. They may have been 44
adopted to compensate for a physical injury or to accommodate individuality in the social world. Students unlearn unworkable movements and discover better, personalized ways to move, using mind-body principles of slowed action, breathing, awareness and thinking about their feelings. Feng Shui: The ancient Chinese system of arranging manmade spaces and elements to create or facilitate harmonious qi or chi (pronounced “chee”), or energy flow, by tempering or enhancing the energy where necessary. Feng shui consultants may advise on both personal and business spaces, either before or after the spaces are created. Flower Remedies: Flower essences have been recognized for their ability to improve well-being by eliminating negative emotions. In the 1930s, English physician Edward Bach concluded that negative emotions could lead to physical illness. His research also convinced him that flowers possessed healing properties that could be used to treat emotional problems. In the 1970s, Richard Katz completed Bach’s work and established the Flower Essence Society, which has registered some 100 essences from flowers in more than 50 countries. Functional Medicine: A personalized medicine that focuses on primary prevention and deals with underlying causes, instead of symptoms, for serious chronic diseases. Treatments are grounded in nutrition and improved lifestyle habits and may make use of medications. The discipline uses a holistic approach to analyze and treat interdependent systems of the body and to create the dynamic balance integral to good health. Healing Touch: A non-invasive, relaxing and nurturing energy therapy designed to help restore physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance and support self-healing. A gentle touch is used on or near the fullyclothed client to influence the body’s inner energy centers and exterior energy fields. Healing Touch is used to ease acute and chronic conditions, assist with pain management, encourage

deep relaxation and accelerate wound healing. Herbal Medicine: This oldest form of medicine uses natural plants in a wide variety of forms for their therapeutic value. Herbs produce and contain various chemical substances that act upon the body to strengthen its natural functions without the negative side effects of synthetic drugs. They may be taken internally or applied externally via teas, tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments, compresses and poultices. Holistic Healthcare: A healthcare practice which considers and treats all aspects of a patient’s needs—psychological, social and physiological. Holistic healthcare generally includes a variety of alternatives to traditional Western medicine, which tends to be reactive rather than proactive, and which often relies on pharmaceutical treatment of symptoms. Holotropic Breathwork: A self-exploration technique that combines breathing, evocative music and a specific form of bodywork to integrate one’s physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions. At workshops run by facilitators, participants try to access the four levels of experience that are available during breathing: sensory, biographical, perinatal and transpersonal. By accessing buried memories, individuals are thought to relive their birth experience or traumatic life events, free up “stuck” emotional viewpoints, or experience a mystical state of awareness, such as connecting with the universe. Homeopathy: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar,” and pathos, meaning “suffering,” employs the concept that “like cures like.” A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing. Hydrotherapy: The use of water,
ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full-body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is considered effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used at home as part of a self-care program.
creased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. Some tests use acupuncture meridians; others analyze interrelationships among muscles, organs, the brain and the body’s energy field. Applied kinesiology is also used to check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered.
Hypnotherapy: A range of hypnosis techniques that allow practitioners to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious. The altered state that occurs under hypnosis has been compared to a state of deep meditation or transcendence, in which the innate recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely. The subject can achieve greater clarity regarding his or her own wants and needs, explore other events or periods of life that require resolution, or generally develop a more positive attitude. Often used to help people lose weight or stop smoking, it is also used in the treatment of phobias or stress and as an adjunct to the treatment of illnesses.
Learning Therapy: An interactive, non-drug treatment for learning challenges (like ADD/ADHD or classroom behavioral issues) or for enhancing learning, often through patterns of movement thought to stimulate neural pathways. Types of learning therapy include programs/curricula designed by Brain Gym and the Seattle-based HANDLE Institute.
Integrative Medicine: This holistic approach combines conventional Western medicine and complementary alternative treatments, in order to simultaneously treat mind, body and spirit. Geared to promote health and prevent illness, it neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies without serious evaluation.
Lymphatic Drainage: Pioneered in the 1930s, manual lymphatic drainage is a type of gentle massage intended to encourage movement of the lymph throughout the body. Practitioners use light pressure applied in a circular motion to stimulate the lymph system, which includes tonsils, lymph nodes and other tissues where the accumulation of lymph can indicate infection or other health problems.
Iridology: Analysis of the delicate structure of the iris, the colored portion of the eye, to reveal information about conditions within the body. More than 90 specific zones on each iris, for a combined total of 180-plus zones, correspond to specific areas of the body. Because body weaknesses may be noticeable in the iris long before they are discernible through blood work or other methods of laboratory analysis, iridology is thought to be a useful tool for preventive self-care. Kinesiology/Applied Kinesiology: The study of muscles and their movement. Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to help identify de-
Life Coach: A professional who helps clients identify their personal and/or professional goals and design a plan or institute techniques for achieving them. The life coach works with clients to recognize and overcome any obstacles that may interfere with achievement of those goals.
Magnetic Field Therapy: Based on the belief that electromagnetic energy and the human body have a vital and valid interrelationship, thereby making it possible to use magnetic field therapy as an aid in diagnosing and treating physical and emotional disorders. This process is thought to relieve symptoms and, in some cases, retard the cycle of new diseases. Magnets and electromagnetic therapy devices are now being used to eliminate pain, facilitate the healing of broken bones and counter the effects of stress. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Invented in the 1930s, this
gentle form of massage is intended to stimulate the lymphatic system, thereby promoting the body’s ability to detoxify itself. Practitioners of manual lymphatic drainage believe it facilitates elimination of metabolic waste products, excess fluid and bacteria. MLD is also thought to enhance circulation and cell regeneration. Massage, Certified Neuromuscular: The certified neuromuscular therapist uses soft-tissue manipulation to address the underlying causes of pain, not just the symptoms. Certification training involves learning to recognize the effects of both internal factors (e.g. poor circulation) and external factors (e.g. stress) that can lead to pain and dysfunction. Massage therapy: A general term for the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. Massage therapy incorporates various disciplines and involves kneading, rubbing, brushing and tapping the muscles and connective tissues by hand or using mechanical devices. Its goal is to increase circulation and detoxification, in order to reduce physical and emotional stress and increase overall wellness. Meditation: The intentional directing of attention to one’s inner self. Methods and practices to achieve a meditative state are based upon various principles using the body or mind and may employ control or lettinggo mechanisms. Techniques include the use of imagery, mantras, observation, and breath control. Research has shown that regular meditation can contribute to psychological and physiological well-being. As a spiritual practice, meditation is used to facilitate a mystical sense of oneness with a higher power or the universe. It can also help reduce stress and alleviate stress-related ailments, such as anxiety and high blood pressure. Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET): A non-invasive, drug free, natural modality intended to test for and eliminate allergies. NAET uses a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture,

acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutritional medicine. One allergen is treated at a time. Naturopathy: A comprehensive and eclectic system whose philosophy is based upon working in harmony with the body’s natural healing abilities. Naturopathy incorporates a broad range of natural methods and substances aimed to promote health. Training may include the study of specific approaches, including massage, manipulation, acupuncture, acupressure, counseling, applied nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy and minor surgery, plus basic obstetrics for assistance with natural childbirth. Nutritional Counseling: Embracing a wide range of approaches, nutrition-based, complementary therapies and counseling seek to alleviate physical and psychological disorders through special diets and food supplements. These will be either macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins and fiber) or micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements that cannot be manufactured in the body). Nutritional therapy/counseling often uses dietary or food supplements, which can include tablets, capsules, powders or liquids. Orthomolecular Medicine: Employs vitamins, minerals and amino acids to create nutritional content and balance in the body. Orthomolecular medicine targets a wide range of conditions, including depression, hypertension, cancer, schizophrenia and other mental and physiological disorders. Osteopathy/Osteopathic Physicians: Osteopathy uses generally accepted physical, pharmacological and surgical methods of diagnosis and therapy, with a strong emphasis on body mechanics and manipulative methods to detect and correct faulty structure and function, in order to restore the body’s natural healing capacities. Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) are fully trained and licensed according to the same standards as medical doctors (MD) and receive additional, extensive training in the body’s structure and functions.

Oxygen Therapy: Designed to alter the body’s chemistry to help overcome disease, promote repair and improve overall function. Properly applied, oxygen is thought to be an effective tool to treat a wide variety of conditions, including infections, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, allergies, cancer and multiple sclerosis. The major types of oxygen therapy used to treat illness are hyperbaric oxygen and ozone. Hydrogen peroxide therapy (oral or intravenous) can be dangerous and should be avoided. Pilates: A structured system of small, isolated movements that involves concentrated focus on every nuance of muscle action while working out on floor mats or machines. Emphasizes development of the torso’s abdominal power center, or core. More gentle than conventional exercises, Pilates, like yoga, yields long, lean, flexible muscles whose gracefully balanced movements readily translate into everyday activities like walking, sitting and bending. Can help in overcoming injuries. Prolotherapy: A rejuvenating therapy that uses injections of natural substances to stimulate collagen growth, in order to strengthen weak or damaged joints, tendons, ligaments or muscles. Often used as a natural alternative to drugs and/or surgery to treat pain syndromes, including degenerative arthritis, lower back, neck and joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, and torn ligaments and cartilage. Qigong and Tai chi: Combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the body’s flow of vital energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”), improve circulation, and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi was originally a selfdefense martial art descended from qigong and employed to promote inner peace and calm. Rebirthing Breathwork: Also known as conscious connected breathing, or vivation. Rebirthing is consid-

ered a means to access and release unresolved emotions. The technique uses conscious, steady, rhythmic breathing, without pausing between inhaling and exhaling. Guided by a professional “rebirther,” clients re-experience past memories, including birth, and let go of emotional tension stored in the body. Reflexology: A natural healing art based upon the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands is thought to increase circulation and promote specifically designated bodily and muscular functions. Regression Therapies: Operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional problems are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, such as childhood traumas. The practitioner uses hypnosis, or other altered states of consciousness, and relaxation techniques to access the source of “unfinished business,” and helps clients analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives. Reiki: Means “universal life-force energy.” A method of activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies to organs and glands, or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). Proponents believe various Reiki techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems, and facilitate spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki is often used to complement the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses, and others for whom the use of touch is essential and appropriate. The Results System: A non-intrusive system using kinesiology (biofeedback via muscle testing) to identify and release body stressors at a cellular level, allowing the body to operate at the highest levels of efficiency possible. It may have a positive affect on conditions such as chemical imbalance, learning disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders and alcoholism.
Rolfing Structural Integration (Rolfing): A hands-on technique for deep-tissue manipulation of the myofascial system, composed of the muscles and the connective tissue, or fascia, in order to restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, the range and freedom of physical and emotional expression are believed to increase. Rolfing may be used to help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture, and restore flexibility. Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition based on the belief that loss of power is the real source of illness, and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition is thought to facilitate both self-empowerment and self-healing. Spiritual Healing/Counseling: Practiced in two forms. In one, the healer uses thought or touch to align his or her spiritual essence with that of the client. The healer works to either balance the spiritual field or shift the perceptual base of the client to create harmony between mind and body and to draw the client into the active presence of the divine spirit. In the other, the healer transforms healing energy into a vibrational frequency that the client can receive and comfortably assimilate, facilitating self-healing. Thai Massage: A form of body therapy that incorporates gentle rocking motions, rhythmic compression along the body’s energy lines, and passive stretching to help stimulate the free flow of energy, break up blockages, and restore general well-being. One of the branches of Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM), Thai massage is performed on a floor mat, with the client dressed in lightweight, comfortable clothes. No oils are used. Thai massage aids
flexibility, inner-organ massage, oxygenation of the blood, and quieting of the mind.
diseases or conditions directly, it has been found effective in treating the symptoms of many physical ailments.
Thermography (Thermal Imaging): A diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of inflammation and abnormal tissue growth. Inflammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges.
Yoga Therapy: The application of yoga principles, methods and techniques to empower individuals to progress towards greater health and freedom from disease, representing a first effort to integrate traditional yogic concepts and techniques with Western medical and psychological knowledge. Yoga therapy aims at the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions, ranging from emotional distress to back problems.
Thought Field Therapy (TFT): Promoted as a highly effective, noninvasive, healthy alternative to longterm or drug-related psychotherapy. Used for stress management and stress relief, as well as the reduction or elimination of anxiety and anxiety-related problems. TFT is designed to address the fundamental causes of specific problems, balancing the body’s energy system and eliminating most negative emotions within minutes, while promoting the body’s own healing ability. Trager Approach (Psychophysical Integration): A system of movement re-education that seeks to address the mental roots of muscle tension. By gently rocking, cradling and moving the client’s fully clothed body, the practitioner encourages him or her to see that physically restrictive patterns can be changed. The Trager approach includes “mentastics”—simple, active, self-induced movements that can be done by the client during regular daily activities. Trager work has been used to address a variety of neuromuscular disorders, and to the stresses and discomforts of everyday living.

Yoga: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join,” and which refers to the joining of man’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. The goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including physical exercises called asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation, and diet and nutrition.
