Valerie Emanuel
HNS Industry Ambassador
Valerie Valerie is BEAUTIFUL and has finally come to term with herself and the industry when if comes to the size her body is meant to be! Valerie has worked with some top agencies but was never able to maintain a small enough hip measurement to please her agents or clients. We love that Valerie has put her health and happiness first as a priority and is now a beautiful role model for so many girls! It is amazing how good healthy can look and Valerie is a perfect example of that!
“Happiness to me is clean thinking, not being obsessed with anyone or anything.
Why do you feel so passionate about Healthy is the New Skinny and the message it brings? The HNS movement is important because I grew up reading fashion magazines and thinking that the girls in the fashion spreads were representing me and that's what I needed to be. When in fact, that is not who I am, and with confidence I have grown to see it is not who I want to be either!
What makes you laugh so hard you cry? When I burp or my stomach growls really loud or my body does something else I can not control, in a quiet room! I always get so embarrassed and I start to laugh uncontrollably.
“I want girls to know that the girl in the magazine doesn't have to represent you. You do not have to be her in order to be happy and loved.”- Valerie"
If you could go back in time and give your high school self a message from the future what would it be? I would tell her you are Beautiful. Respect yourself. Do not abuse yourself. Don't take yourself too damn seriously!
Be Free to be You!!!"
Why do you believe in Healthy is the New Skinny? I believe in HNS because there is nothing else like it. People in the fashion industry pretend they are with the healthy movement for one minute, then the next season everyone is back in self obsession and praising girls who look sickly with disordered eating… it is so sad. “You are cool, funky, fabulous, and fun even if you wear glasses, live in a small town, and have never been kissed! That is chic… there are no limits!”" Do you think change is possible? I do think change is possible, but I think it has to be continuous. Like I said, not something that is in for a season! It has to be little by little, especially in the fashion industry like picking Adriana Lima's body or Brooklyn Decker's body favorable over Freja beha Erickson who seems to be in everything, and has one of the slimmest and unhealthy looking bodies I have seen in a while.
What changes would you like to see for your generation of women and the next generations to come? I would like the sample size in fashion to change from a 00 to a 4 or 6, and for the wider range of body types to be represented. It shouldn't be shocking to see an African American model, or a size 8 girl in a magazine because the consumer is so diverse the models should be as well! It makes sense.
What do you LOVE most about being a girl? I love that fashion changes so often! My boyfriend is a male model, and has had lots of success, but says its easier for women to make money in fashion because it changes so often!! We have so many choices!

I'm very extroverted, but some of the best times I have are intimate occasions with a friend or with my partner watching a movie and making our own dinner. I have learned to love myself so much, as well as loving this head God put on my shoulders that I can be alone meditating and feel all the joy in the world.
