Excitingly, this month our Artist Spotlight interview is with superstar actor and singer Mandy Patinkin, who will be performing here at the Fox Tucson Theatre on Holly Baker February 18. Perhaps best known for his roles in The Princess Bride, Chicago Hope, Criminal Minds and Homeland, among many other hits— learn about his many other talents and passions on page 26. We also explore how dental health is linked to heart health (page 15), the magic of hugs (page 29), lowering our battery footprint (page 24), plant-based milks (page 22) and more. As a bonus, for some benefits of the lovely citrus fruits adorning this month’s cover, see the Health Brief on page 10. With love,

Tucson Neurotherapy Specializes in the Remarkable Effects of Neurotherapy on Brain Health
Throughout life, the brain retains a remarkable ability to heal itself when given appropriate input. Research has demonstrated that neurotherapy shows efficacy for a wide variety of brain-based disorders, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, panic disorders, PTSD, insomnia, learning disorders (dysgraphia, dyslexia), developmental disorders, post-concussive syndrome and TBI, TIA and OCD, among other conditions. No one knows how helpful neurotherapy can be better than the clinicians at Tucson Neurotherapy. Located roughly six blocks from the U of A campus, Tucson Neurotherapy is a comfortable, home-based clinic that provides alternative, research-backed treatment options for brain-based disorders and cognitive performance. Unique among Arizona-based clinics, practitioners at Tucson Neurotherapy offer a combination approach of neurofeedback, neurostimulation and psychotherapy. Appreciating the importance of a holistic approach to healing, Tucson Neurotherapy maintains relationships with nutritionists and coaches who together provide a well-rounded understanding of brain health in the context of full-body wellness. This pharmaceutical-free intervention addresses brain-based disorders at the source: by targeting and rerouting dysfunctional brainwave patterns. Over time, through learning and attunement, the brain is able to produce desirable patterns on its own and this change often correlates to positive, profound shifts in one’s quality of life that remain long after the treatment program has concluded. Treatment programs are based on the concept that each brain is unique. Effective treatment is dependent on recognizing and designing programs around that uniqueness. All treatment plans are tailored to clients’ individual patterns of brainwave activity. The first step of treatment is collecting a completely noninvasive brain scan, also known as a quantitative-EEG (QEEG), which uses sophisticated software to examine one’s brain from multiple vantage points. Clinicians then consult with industry veterans and together provide a 25-page, individualized report and a treatment plan. Each treatment plan is research-backed with the goal of helping the brain relearn patterns of focused healthy brainwave activity. Available treatment options include tDCS, tACS, noise stimulation, photobiomodulation, targeted PEMF, audio-visual entrainment and heart-rate variability. Clinicians at Tucson Neurotherapy have additional experience working with alleviating chronic pain throughout the body—including migraines and nerve pain—as well as tinnitus. Having healed their own brain-based disorders through these technologies, these neurotherapists offer a sensitive and empathetic treatment approach made possible through their own personal healing experiences. Health Briefs Citrus for Heart Health
SarapulSar38/CanvaPro
A common flavanone called hesperidin found in citrus fruit may help protect against heart disease, according to a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in Current Developments in Nutrition. Researchers analyzed 12 studies involving 589 participants that examined the effects of hesperidin extracts on various outcomes, such as inflammatory markers, body mass index, insulin resistance and lipids. After accounting for variability across the groups of participants, researchers found that hesperidin significantly reduced both total cholesterol and lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) in obese individuals under age 50 that consumed approximately 500 milligrams per day of hesperidin for more than six weeks. It also had a positive impact on inflammatory markers, insulin sensitivity and fasting blood glucose. Beneficial effects were not noted on other risk factors of heart disease, such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good” cholesterol), triglycerides, body mass index and blood pressure. Hesperidin can be found in oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruit, in whole fruit or juice form and in commercially available supplements. Consuming grapefruit might interfere with certain medications for heart disease, so patients should consult with their doctor before making any dietary changes.
Why Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment?
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is a powerful healing tool whose time has come. Oxygen drives every healing response in the body. What is one of the first things that is typically administered to a patient coming into the ER with a serious medical condition? Oxygen. Hyperbaric conditions (being under increased atmospheric pressure) enhance the oxygen carrying capacity of blood by dissolving oxygen bubbles into plasma, the fluid part of blood. At 1.5 atmospheres of pressure (.5 atmospheres above ambient pressure or the pressure of being about 16 feet underwater), breathing 100 percent medical oxygen, oxygen carrying capacity is 700 percent of normal. A hyperbaric oxygen treatment involves getting into a chamber that pressurizes and wearing a mask that delivers 100 percent oxygen. Time in the chamber is approximately an hour. Most conditions require 40 sessions. Extra oxygen can help: improve cellular and mitochondrial function; trigger the release of stem cells from bone marrow; fight infection; drive detoxification; fight inflammation; modify gene expression (more than 8,300 genes have been studied); up-regulate healing processes and down-regulate inflammatory and degenerative processes. Extra oxygen also causes telomere lengthening, which has been the hallmark of anti-aging. In Japan, HBOT is considered to be the fountain of youth. What are you waiting for? Jump in the chamber. Carol L. Henricks, M.D. is a neurologist at NorthStar Hyperbaric, in Tucson. Connect at 520-229-1238 or NorthStarHBOT.com.

Heart-Healthy Phosphatidylcholine Infusions
First isolated in 1845 by French chemist and pharmacist Theodore Gobley, phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a phospholipid that can support the membrane of every cell. PC is essential for intestinal health, liver health, brain health and heart health. It can be found naturally in foods like soybeans, seeds, nuts, liver and egg yolks. However, one might consider an IV of PC to get the maximum benefits.
PC helps the heart by improving the vascular walls and circulation, strengthening the immune system by rebuilding intestinal walls (which house 80 percent of the immune cells) and lowering inflammation. PC can lower LDL and triglycerides and heal nerves and connective tissues. It can act as a detoxifier of chemicals, alcohol and other pollutants, thereby repairing the liver. This in turn improves overall liver function, which means more energy is available for your heart and health. Doing PC as an IV means this amazing nutrient bypasses the stomach and gets delivered directly to the cells where it can do the most good. Typically, patients will do eight to 10 PC infusions over two or three months. The treatment time is usually two hours and can include a glutathione IV afterward, if requested. If you are concerned about your heart health or have elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL or any age-related or chronic health issues, you could benefit from doing a PC IV. Transformational Medicine, in Tucson, strives to carry clean, preservative-free PC that is compounded locally. IVs are done by a doctor or RN. In February, PC IVs are 10 percent off on Wednesdays. Connect at 520-209-1755 or tfmnd.com. See ad, page 3.

The Heart as a Compass pushish images on Adobestock
by Wendy Becker
Categorically, while the liver opens to the soul window of the eyes, the heart opens to the tongue. Sometimes stuttering can be a component of emotional tension by not being able to speak clearly from the heart—thus, abdicating heart-felt expression.
A
s a 5,000-year-old art that was once an oral tradition handed down many generations, the principles of Chinese Medicine were memorized like poetry through songs. The threads that connect the web of layered anatomy and fluid physiology has its root in observing how the body interfaces not only with natural surroundings, but also the inner wilderness of the psychological landscape. There is a phrase, “home is where the heart is,” and in Chinese Medicine the heart is the palace where the Spirit resides. When a person has “good Shen” it means that one’s heart is in harmony and at home in the world and sleeps well. Archetypally, the heart represents the great controller in the office of the Emperor/Empress and when emotionally balanced, is a positive sovereign personal authority.
12
In the Five Element tradition, the heart is representative of the Fire element. Resonant patterns that go with the heart are the color of red, odor of burnt, sound of laughter and the emotion of joy. Calibrated by the thyroid and protected by the pericardium, the heart is tireless in rhythm and flow. Interestingly, the small intestine has an intimate relationship to the heart as both advisor and processor of massive nutritional components. In fact, when one part of the heart tissue is damaged, so is a part of the small intestine and vise-versa.

In Asian culture, the heart is not separate of the mind. What we think influences how we behave and move through the world. Do we speak our flame of truth or let shadows etch lies that make the compass spin out of control? While it is possible to logically “think” about solutions for solving the problems with the mind, an unsettled one tends to get stuck on a hamster wheel distracted by squirrel antics. Arriving home to one’s heart is consciously choosing to deeply listen and to function in vibrational frequencies of coherent resonance: a discerning unpremeditated and grounded voice that quietly guides the Spirit on the human path between the spaces of breath and pauses of rhythmic silence. Book Profile
The Vagus Nerve in Therapeutic Practice by Ann Baldwin, PhD
What is your book about? The vagus nerve is a key communication pathway between the mind and the body. The heart, gut and other organs use it to inform the brain of their status; the brain uses it to calm and rebalance the organs, like an antidote to the fight-or-flight response. It also helps digestion, improves immune function and releases acetylcholine, an anti-inflammatory agent. But, when you become too stressed, it can’t do its job properly. That’s why we need techniques to help it work better. This book describes those techniques. Some you can do on your own, and others use therapies such as biofeedback, massage and aromatherapy, or group activities such as laughter yoga, singing and chanting. This book is for people who want help with managing stress and for therapists who want additional ways to provide that help by including vagus stimulation.
Why did you write this book? This book was inspired by students at the University of Arizona who took my course, Physiology of Mind-Body Interactions. One student said, “As a class we navigated through the beginning of COVID in Spring of 2020. We all made good use of the breathing techniques you taught during that confusing time. I will always use these techniques to activate my vagus nerve, especially as I go through dental school these
next few years.” The students’ enthusiasm and positive feedback made it clear to me that there is a place for these techniques in most people’s lives at this time. What makes this book unique? For each therapy, a personal case study is included that illustrates in real life how each person improved and how this was linked to the vagus nerve. The case studies are contributed by therapists mostly practicing in the Tucson area and known to me personally. Some history, poetry and personal experiences are also included throughout the book for added interest. Tell us a little about yourself. I am the Director of Mind-Body-Science and professor of physiology (retired) from University of Arizona, as well as a Reiki Master. My degrees are BSc in Physics, University of Bristol UK, MSc in Radiation Physics and PhD in Physiology, University of London, UK. I focus on reducing the damaging effects of stress using biofeedback, reiki, trauma release exercises and equine assisted learning. I have published over 130 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and another book, Reiki in Clinical Practice. A Science Based Guide. In my spare time, I ride my horse and am a horse handler for Therapeutic Riding of Tucson. Connect at 520-991-9458, ABaldwin@MindBody-Science.com or Mind-Body-Science. com. How Relationships Shape Our Health by Ana Tanase
W
hen thinking about improving health, the more obvious things that come to mind are nutrition, exercise, maybe sunshine or avoiding toxins. We don’t always appreciate the role the people surrounding us have in shaping who we are, increasing our stress or comforting us. The minute we are born, we are placed into the context of our families. The contact with our immediate family has a great impact in our brain development, how our neurons wire for connection in the years to come. This imprint of our parents or primary caretakers determines our attachment style for the rest of our lives. The best attachment style is called secure attachment, which happens between a reliable and attuned parent and a child that will trust the people around them, have a secure base to launch into life and trust themselves that they are worthy of love and positive relationships. On the other hand, if children grow up in environments with conflict, parents suffering from mental health problems or who had insecure attachments themselves, they develop ambivalent, disordered or avoidant pattern styles. With an ambivalent attachment, children are clingy and overly dependent on others, reluctant to develop close relationships. As Dr. Segal describes, attachment styles can correlate with resilience later in life: “It’s been shown repeatedly that children with histories of secure attachment are less vulnerable to stress and better

able to take advantage of opportunities for growth.” The way we learn how to relate to others is a lifelong process and does not end with childhood. According to the influential ego psychologist Erickson, our psychosocial development continues to be molded by our experiences in the social environment until death. At different ages we are faced with new lessons to learn. For example, the task of young adulthood is to learn how to develop intimate and loving relationships with others. Failure to achieve this step will lead to isolation and loneliness. The longest study of human happiness was performed by a group of researchers at Harvard University. The study gathered health records of 724 participants in different socioeconomic levels and tracked them for 85 years. The researchers reviewed health records, asked thousands of questions to the participants and people around them and took hundreds of measurements. The study looked at career achievement, wealth, exercise, diets and many other details. The study has found a strong association between happiness and close relationships like spouses, family, friends and social circles. The good news is that the best things in life are free, and as long as we are open to learn and work on self-improvement, it is never too late to develop strong positive relationships. heart-healthy lifestyle includes knowing your body, managing stress, getting enough sleep, exercising, eating healthier and maintaining good oral health. We tend to think that heart attacks are all about intense chest pain, but that’s not always true.
your body. Like other muscles, your heart becomes stronger with regular physical activity. Research indicates that people with periodontal disease, gum infection and tooth decay may have a higher risk of having a heart attack and stroke—in some cases even dying from it. It has shown a link between oral and cardiac disease. The link may get established by bacteria from infected gums traveling throughout the body. Cardiac disease may also be caused by the body’s immune response (inflammation) to chronic gum disease. Lastly, cardiac disease may also be connected to unhealthy habits such as smoking, poor food choices and skipping preventive care visits that result in widespread damage to the body. Improve your oral health by consistently maintaining a good dental hygiene routine as well as brushing your teeth for two minutes with an electric toothbrush, at least twice a day, and flossing daily. Follow your dentist’s guidance on what you should do to take care of your teeth and gums. Also, get regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months or more as needed. Some may experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and left arm, back or jaw pain. And roughly one in five incidents are “silent” heart attacks, causing damage to the heart muscle without recognizable symptoms to the person suffering the attack. Knowing the warning signs can save one’s life. Here are examples of how to keep your heart healthier. Get enough sleep. Adults who sleep less than seven hours each night raise their risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Why? In part, because when you are sleeping, your blood pressure goes down. Having sleep problems means your blood pressure stays higher for a longer period of time. Manage stress. When you’re stressed, your brain encourages the release of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. \Being stressed about things you cannot fight or flee from leaves you with an overabundance of adrenaline in your system, which can lead to high blood pressure. Stress can also lead to headaches, upset stomach, heartburn, sore throats and teeth grinding. Exercise. As your cardiovascular fitness improves, your heart muscle doesn’t have to work as forcefully to pump blood through

Tiny Moments of Couraging
and walked off into the world, and I’ll never know how his day or his life were going—whether he was sad or disappointed or supremely content. But what I do know is this: I had one of those tiny moments where we’re given a choice to either expand or contract, and I contracted. Was it a big deal? No. But did it provide anything, did it have me being true to who I am at my best and most expressed? Definitely not. And so life went on, ho hum, per usual.
Developing the Habit of Showing Up by Deb Beroset
ASPmedia on Adobestock
Now contrast that with what happened when my friend, I’ll call her Lynn, walked into the restroom at her office and encountered a woman she sees frequently. She started to scoot past her with no eye contact or words exchanged, but then things took a different turn.
S
ometimes, I can be so small, so stingy. Like the time I was on an elevator at the end of a long-ish day. I was hungry. I glanced down at the phone in my hand and noticed a text message I hadn’t answered yet. I was feeling a little overwhelmed. On the sixth floor, the elevator doors opened, and in came an older gentleman
who had the best hat and smelled faintly of campfire smoke. He seemed a little sad. Was he? Who knows, maybe his face in repose just looks like that. But he did seem wistful, somehow. Lonely. I noticed him, I had a thought to say something—and I said nothing and looked down at my phone. He got off the elevator
This time, the other woman turned to Lynn and made some comment about how dry shampoo is the best thing ever. What ensued was one of those mutual OMG moments where the stranger you’ve been sort of avoiding becomes a kindred spirit. “The minute she said something to me, I perked up and became this different person, all talkative and outgoing. We spent a couple minutes celebrating the miracle of dry shampoo, and when I walked back to

my office, I felt happy,” she says, waving her glass in a swoopy maneuver to underscore the profound nature of the interaction. “And now when I see her every so often, it’s like, oh, there’s my Restroom Bestie!” Lynn looked around the restaurant, then at me. “It made me wonder, you know? How many moments do I let pass by where a tiny gesture on my part could have totally made the moment?” It made me think as well. Sometimes simply witnessing ourselves in action—or inaction—is the most important gift of the moment. “Courage is like—it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: you get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.” ~ Marie M. Daly In my work with clients, something that inevitably comes up at some point is the discomfort of showing up. More to the point, it’s the anticipation of discomfort that seems to trip people up. “What if I say the wrong thing and look stupid or desperate? Who am I to speak up? So many other people would say something more important or clever or meaningful…” Blah blah blah. Yet we are often surprised and tickled at what ensues when we do choose to say something. I love the idea of learning courage by couraging. Building the habit of looking for where I can sprinkle a little wonder and love will have less attention on boring, always-too-much-to-do me, and more attention on the gifts I’m able to give here and there. Like the other morning in Whole Foods, the woman standing in line in front of me was rockin’ the most spectacular specs I’ve seen in a while. As she moved to the next open register, I called out, “Those glasses are awesome!” She turned her head, looked a little surprised, then flashed a megawatt smile that lit up the whole damn store. “Thank you!” she said, and she threw those shoulders back a bit and drew some admiring looks from the shoppers around us.

Mimi Guarneri on Treating the Heart With Love by Sandra Yeyati
A
fter graduating first in her class at The State University of New York Medical Center, Dr. Mimi Guarneri began her career at Scripps Clinic, in San Diego, as an attending physician in interventional cardiology, where she placed thousands of coronary stents. Recognizing the need for more comprehensive and holistic approaches, she founded the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine and served as medical director for 15 years, combining state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology with lifestyle programs and alternative therapies like acupuncture, healing touch, meditation and yoga to diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. Guarneri is board certified in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, nuclear cardiology and integrative holistic medicine. She is a founder and president of The Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine; co-founder and medical director of Guarneri Integrative Health, in La Jolla, California; and a clinical associate professor at University of California, San Diego. In 2012, The Institute for Functional Medicine honored her with the Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award. Guarneri is the author of The Heart Speaks: A Cardiologist Reveals the Secret Language of Healing and 108 Pearls to Awaken Your Healing Potential.

What is holistic cardiology?
It’s about treating the whole person— body, mind, emotions and spirit. If you have a tree with sick fruit on it, you can keep cutting off the branches, or you can ask, what does the tree need? Does it need more sunlight or water? How is the soil? Does it have minerals? With patients, the question we should be asking is why does someone have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease? And then you ask, what is the soil of a human life made of? That soil is made of micro and macro nutrients, physical activity, having a purpose in life, joy and a good night’s sleep. At our center we call these the pearls of health.
How do you diagnose people by listening to their stories?
We know through research that relationships between patients and physicians affect outcome. People who bond with their physicians have lower cholesterol or blood sugar levels because they’re more likely to be compliant with medications. We also know that events don’t happen in isolation. When people have major, life-changing events—death of a spouse or child, divorce—all of a sudden, they start having cancer, sudden death and heart attacks.
NaturalTucson.com
So, when I look at someone that had a heart attack, I don’t just want to know about their symptoms the day of the attack. I also want to know what was going on six months before, because that’s where you find the story. “I’ve been under stress. I lost my job. I lost my house. My wife told me they wanted a divorce.” This is where you start to get the stories that add up to the ultimate cardiovascular event.
How do you translate that inquiry into the healing journey?
Everyone needs something different at a different point in their life. Some people need to change what they’re eating or start walking, but then you have to look at why they’re not taking care of their physical body. Depressed people say, “I have 20 friends in this pack of cigarettes.” They don’t say, “Let me eat Brussels sprouts and take a walk.” I have to deal with the underlying issue, which could be things like depression, stress or loneliness. I also want to know my patient’s spirituality, because if they believe in a higher power, we can tap into that to give them strength and help transform what’s going on.
What tools do you have in your integrative medical arsenal?
The whole framework of integrative medicine is to understand and use the wisdom of other global healing traditions. For a
patient with back pain, I may use healing touch, acupuncture, massage and medication. I may send somebody who is stressed to transcendental meditation training. I may pull from Ayurveda to help people with digestive issues. The most important thing is looking at your life and finding joy, meaning, purpose, looking at where you can serve, where you can connect. This is the piece that is missing in many people’s lives. Also, look at where you are holding onto anger. Have you done your forgiveness work? How can you begin to practice gratitude?
Why do you say that patients are motivated not by fear but by caring?
MimiGuarneriMD.com
They’re motivated by love. Love is the secret ingredient. People will do everything for three months after a heart attack because they’re terrified, and then they go back to their old ways. They start to gain weight because they never did the deep work to look at what got them there in the first place. A perfect example is one of my heart patients who came in with a walker. She said she had sciatica, and immediately we gave her a shot for her pain. We also did some acupuncture. I got a beautiful message from her the next day, which made no mention of the shot or the acupuncture. Instead, she said, “I felt so much better from the second you gave me a hug.” It’s that kind of connection that makes all the difference. Sandra Yeyati is national editor of Natural Awakenings.

The Potency of Wood Dragon Energy

T
he Year of the Wood Dragon is a potent time. Proceeding from February 10, 2024 to January 28, 2025, the Chinese zodiac animal influence is available both in the background and foreground. Wood Dragons’ last appearance was 1964, next appearance in 2084. Wood provides Dragon a humble quality that masks auspicious strengths and powers. Last year’s Rabbit provided lucky breaks and fortuitous gifts. Inquiring into Wood Dragon resourced by personal

development and confidence in mastered disciplines now comes in handy. Where the Dragon naturally abounds in strength, wisdom, luck and prosperity, the influence of Wood emphasizes growth, creativity and flexibility. Both fold nicely together for building legacy. All inquiries are made humbly—not rushing to conclusions or making assumptions. Applying the potency of the dragon described in the ancient Chinese zodiac
NaturalTucson.com
requires a solid foundation in mundane reality to stand on and a vision to pursue. The accessible energy spans distinct time and space, is resourced by an inherent developmental discipline to stay within boundaries and the committed energy to carry through. Cloak your inquiry in the Wood Dragon exhibiting a pragmatic streak of optimism, ambition and adventuring. Be up to something. Here are three potent ways to access the ways of Wood Dragon: fast and hot or a bright flash or glowing coals. Fast and hot is a marauding dragon diving down on the landscape destroying, cleansing, sweeping everything away. This is the Dragon preparing for new beginnings. Wood Dragon plows the field under, breaking up what was before. The complacent or traditional will not welcome the action, yet it is necessary. Effective times to use fast and hot are at seasonal changes and the beginning of initiatives. A bright flash like lightning, a volcano eruption, a super nova or an idea whose time has come sparks a pure moment between before and after. This is Dragon initiating new beginnings. A messiah, a churn in the planets’ fabric, a powerful declaration, a personal or group breakthrough appears. The hero/heroine arc, quick adjustment to new conditions and challenges shake foundations of reality. The bright flash is a release of potential; it occurs at the first sign of new life breaking through the fabric.
Glowing coals is Wood Dragon forming partnership with social, cultural forces shaping destiny. Dragons don’t care about what others are saying about them and will fructify their creative ideas despite criticism. Being the most auspicious animal of the Chinese zodiac, Dragon, especially when influenced by the Wood element, attracts a trusted counsel of experts to advise them on important matters. These glowing coals sustain the heat needed to mold a new destiny.
Does the matter at hand call for clearing away? Is the moment ripe? Are structures called for?
Despite being brilliant and intelligent, Wood Dragon occasionally ignores reasoning and follows its instinct. Being a dragon, hot-headed and quick-tempered, engaging in irrational fears leads to disaster. Dragon idealism and perfectionism sans inherent nobility, sincerity and streetsmarts leads to narcissism. Without counsel, dragon becomes self-absorbed.
Wood Dragon, the most auspicious of the Chinese zodiac animals, provides a vehicle for shaping new realities. The dragon of myth and fairy tales swoops down from the sky on a fiery destructive path, grabs a fair maiden in its clutches and ascends to a lair. Hidden in this distorted tale is potency/fertility after a cleansing. A path to a new destiny, be it light or dark, is available through Wood Dragon.
The powerful and potent Wood Dragon will conduct itself intuitively or indistinctly. The first like a laser honing in on a pinpoint, the latter like the out of control broom in Sorcerer’s Apprentice, indiscriminately sweeping away everything in its path. In order to use Wood Dragon potent energy with integrity first recognize the need.
LEAN INTO THE WORLD WITH HOPE
Second is committing to action. Bringing enough resources to bear on each stage individually and collectively. Fast and hot is designed to burn out, to fade. A bright flash initiates a new beginning. Sustaining heat concocts a new elixir to nourish destiny, lasting the longest.

Plant-Based Milk Alternatives
first exchange-traded fund dedicated to plant-based companies. “This is driven by the quality of the products, including oat, almond, soy, pea and hemp milks as proven options. With 65 percent of people worldwide and more than 80 percent of African Americans and more than 90 percent of Asian Americans being lactose intolerant, plant-based milk is a great alternative.”
Benefits for People and the Planet
When selecting beverage options, many consumers also weigh a company’s ethical choices. Alfano predicts the beginning of the end of traditional factory farming, saying, “People are seeing how inefficient and harmful meat production is and are making the connection between saving the environment and their lifestyle choices.”

hile plant-based milks have been around for centuries, they have historically played second fiddle to other dairy alternatives, but not anymore. As people are becoming more conscious of the impact their food choices have on their health and the planet, plant-based milk has turned into a mainstay in most grocery stores. Touting sustainability benefits, a creamy texture and pleasing flavors, soy, oat, almond, cashew and even macadamia nut milks are having their moment.

According to the Good Food Institute, 41 percent of American households purchased plant-based milk in 2022. Most major milk brands, such as Nestlé, are offering plant-based alternatives, while specialty companies like Elmhurst 1925 and Eden Foods are continually expanding their selection. “Plant-based dairy is now more than 15 percent of the milk industry,” says Elysabeth Alfano, co-founder and CEO of VegTech Invest, a firm that manages the

Leah Hoxie, senior vice president of innovation at Oatly North America, observes, “People opt for nondairy milk for a variety of reasons that are usually personal and nuanced. These can include allergies, nutrition, ethical and environmental concerns, and, of course, taste. Oatly makes nondairy milk alternatives that have the same creamy taste, frothy feel and functionality as cow’s milk while also generally having a lower climate impact. We’re also seeing generational differences in milk preferences, with a recent Oatly flash poll finding that 54 percent of Gen Z and 49 percent of Millennials prefer plant-based milk to cow’s milk.” Like many other plant-based companies, Oatly has expressed a commitment to creating lasting environmental change. “With roughly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions coming from the food system, and about half of those emissions coming from the livestock or the animal-based sector, the greatest impact we at Oatly can have as a company is to convert people from dairy milk to oat milk. Our research shows that Oatly Barista sold in the U.S. has a 46 percent lower climate impact than comparable cow’s milk, supporting our larger mission to make it easy for people
to eat better and live healthier lives without recklessly taxing the planet’s resources in the process,” explains Hoxie.

While plant-based milk alternatives may tout health benefits, the specific ingredients and processing methods play a role in their nutritional value. Just because something is plant-based doesn’t automatically make it healthier. “There are misconceptions that either nondairy milks are automatically less healthy than cow milk or that they are inherently more nutritious, but the truth is it depends on what’s in the milk,” says Taylor Wolfram, a registered dietitian who specializes in vegan nutrition.

Plant-based dairy alternatives have differing nutritional advantages, and it is best for consumers to make their own comparison. “Soy and pea milk—the protein superstars of plant milks—contain some fat and, when fortified, are an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D,” Wolfram explains. “Hemp has a little less protein, and oat and almond milks are very low in protein. Hemp milk is rich in ALA [alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plants]. Nondairy milks may or may not contain added sugars and fats or be fortified, so it is best to check the nutrition facts panel to see what levels of nutrients each specific product contains.” Ultimately, the best plant-based dairy may be the one we love to consume. “Enjoyment and taste are highly subjective experiences,” Wolfram says. “I encourage folks to try different options and find what they like.”

Green Living
Lowering Our Battery Footprint
Although alkaline batteries may legally be thrown out in the regular trash because they fall below federal hazardous waste standards, conscientious citizens recycle them when that option is available, as they contain dangerous elements, including lead. Button cell batteries used in watches and garage door openers contain tiny amounts of mercury and should be recycled. Rechargeable batteries should be taken to a local recycling facility that specializes in batteries.
A Look at Personal Strategies and Emerging Technologies by Kelcie Ottoes
A
mericans love their disposable batteries. Every year, they buy and discard about 3 billion of these small-sized power sources that keep cellphones, flashlights, toys and computer accessories running. Lithium-ion and alkaline batteries dominate the market due to their efficiency and versatility. While single-use batteries significantly tax the environment, advancements in production, lifespan and recycling can lead to a greener future. It isn’t easy to create batteries. For one thing, minerals must be extracted from the Earth. Lithium-rich brine is pumped into evaporation ponds, and after the water evaporates, the concentrated brine is processed to harvest the metal. This practice can lead to the contamination of local ecosystems and water basins, toxic emissions and respiratory issues for people living nearby.
Just_Super/doomu/ Vitalii Petrushenko/CanvaPro
While sending any item to a landfill is problematic, batteries are especially complicated because they are made with toxic elements such as cadmium, lead, nickel and electrolytes, as well as other chemicals, all of which can leach into the soil and water system. In addition, lithium can ignite and release chemicals into the air. According to Heal The Planet, Americans create 180,000 tons of hazardous waste from batteries annually, including 86,000 tons from alkaline batteries and 160 million cellphone batteries.
24
Tucson Edition
NaturalTucson.com
“Sustainability is everything for battery manufacturers, despite what a lot of people think,” says Chris Groves, manager at Groves Batteries and the proprietor of TITAN Lithium. “Recycling is imperative to a sustainable market, as recycled materials can be put back into production chains at a lower cost.” A broad-ranging solution is a circular battery economy: a model of production and consumption that extends the life of a battery and its components as long as possible by sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling its materials.
ELECTRONIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION
Fourteen percent of new cars sold in 2022 were electric, up from less than 5 percent in 2020. By 2030 there will be between 145 and 230 million electric vehicles (EV) on the road. The federal government requires manufacturers to warranty that EV batteries will maintain at least 70 percent capacity for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles. Because EVs are relatively new, the average life expectancy of their batteries is not yet known. However, each time an EV battery is charged and discharged, it loses some capacity and eventually will need to be replaced. Recycling old EV batteries will help keep up with demand and reduce their environmental impact. A report from the International Energy Agency estimates
that by 2040, recycled quantities of copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt from spent EV batteries could reduce supply requirements for these minerals by about 10 percent. Most retired EV batteries still have some storage and energy capabilities, even if they are not at their original power levels. Alternative uses for old batteries are being explored, including solar power storage, energy for streetlights or as backup generators in homes. One study in Nature Communications predicts that short-term power grid storage demand could be met by 2030 across most regions using old EV batteries.
ADVANCES IN BATTERY TECHNOLOGY
Solutions for more sustainable batteries are being explored. “New chemistries are focused on using non-rare earth materials like sodium or sulfur, which we have in abundance and are a lot less damaging than lithium mines to extract,” says Groves. Iron-air batteries are currently being developed as energy storage. They are ten times cheaper than lithium batteries and use iron, one of Earth’s most abundant resources. Lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries could be the only battery a car will ever need. They have a range of more than 600 miles on a single charge and a potential 2.4-million-mile lifetime. Solid-state batteries use lithium, but they generate more power and can take up to seven times more charges in their lifetime without the risk of explosion.

TIPS FOR BATTERY CARE AND RECYCLING
Everyone can help make the most of their batteries with a few simple practices. Disposable Batteries: Turn off devices and remove the batteries when they are not in use. Store batteries so they are not in contact with each other in a place that is below 72°F, but above freezing. Do not toss them out at the expiration date; this is when power starts to decline, but the battery is still usable. To recycle, batteries may be taken to a participating homeimprovement store. Find nearby drop-off locations at Call2Recycle.org/locator or Earth911.com. Rechargeable Batteries: Do not leave rechargeable batteries plugged in all the time and do not allow them to drain their power to zero. Power down devices to avoid extra use. On cellphones, turn off the location mode and use the lower-power mode and dim-light settings. Kelcie Ottoes is a writer for sustainable businesses and frequent contributor to Natural Awakenings.

What was the genesis of your career in show business?
I hated school. School had nothing for me; I couldn’t stand it. The teacher would call my parents and say, “I know he can do it, he must just be lazy,” but I was really just bored. When I was seven years old, my parents put me in the boys’ choir at a synagogue on the south side of Chicago. I would sing with the cantor in the temple, and then the little old ladies would come up and pinch me on the cheek and say, “Oh, you’re so adorable.” I think it was the first time I got any positive reinforcement for anything that I did. In high school, my mother had given up on me. I was talking a lot in the mirror at home, and she suggested that I go to the neighborhood youth center to act in one of their plays. I told her, “You don’t know me at all—I’m not doing any plays.” Then I was at South Shore High School in fifth period lunch, and a high school football player walked up to me and said, “You know we’re doing some plays at the youth center, and we’re short some guys—what do you think?” And I said, “Sounds great to me.”

Me being there and being alive. I leave the highlights column for the audience members, for whatever they want to walk away remembering. The whole experience is a highlight for me.

At the end of 2021, after the pandemic shut the entire world down for years, I got together with Adam Ben-David, my piano player, and asked him, “What do you think about going back on the road? Are you up for that?” and he said “Yeah.” I told him, “I want to do something fun. I want to welcome myself back. I want everyone to have fun. We all need to be together again. Everyone’s been isolated, sitting at home on their couch.” To create a new show, we went through 13 to 14 hours’ worth of material and started putting together material that was entertaining and fun. That’s how we built it. In 2022, we did a few west coast gigs to oil it up. Then in January of 2023, we hit the road and started doing it everywhere. I love being on the move and the privilege of bringing music to people. When I started out, I never imagined that I would think of myself as someone with a service job. I’m not the genius who writes the songs, I’m just the mailman. We only have a finite amount of time to enjoy our precious lives. That’s why I called it “Being Alive”—because I don’t think there’s anything more wonderful on this planet than the privilege of being alive.
What made you say “yes” to playing the world’s greatest detective in the Hulu Network murder mystery series “Death and Other Details”?
I read the script, then I gave it to the smartest people I know—my wife, Kathryn Grody, my son Gideon Patinkin and my son’s writing partner, Ewen Wright. After I read it, I thought “wow”. This thing seems like fun, and I was looking for something fun, something not heavy. They agreed, so I called the producers up and told them, “I’m in.”
You recently turned 71, and you could rest on your laurels with all that you’ve achieved. What do you hope to bring forth in your personal life and career in the next decade?
In the next decade I hope to be reflective. A

priority is to spend lots of wonderful time with my grandson, who will be two years old on February 5th, with my new grandchild who will be born in August, and with my family, friends and loved ones. Careerwise, I’m busy collaborating with opera star Nathan Gunn on a new show—we’re in the process of finessing it right now. We also made a television pilot written by my son and his writing partner Ewen created for Showtime called “Seasoned”. It was a casualty of the strike, and so Showtime let it go, along with many other projects, but we own it, the pilot and the scripts we wrote. The good news is that Showtime was not the right home, so we’re looking for a new home that will be the right home as soon as Hollywood gets cooking and learns to walk again.
You mentioned you have a twoyear-old grandson. What do you enjoy about being a grandfather?
His name is Jude, like “Hey Jude”. We go for walks, and recently he saw snow for the first time. Everything is a wonder to him. He calls me “Gramps”. I have a Lionel model train set, and he says, “Gramps, let’s play trains, trains, trains!” He has a great sense of humor. There’s nothing that I love more than a sense of humor. That’s what has kept my wife and I together for the last 3,000 years. The significant difference between being a grandparent and being a parent is that when you’re a parent, you’re so busy feeling like their life is in your hands. You worry about everything—you’ve gotta keep them alive. As a grandparent your job is to shut up, don’t say anything of a critical nature to the parents, don’t give any advice and just enjoy them. So you’re completely free to witness all of the things that you probably missed with your own kids. He’s a pistol. I’m loving, loving, loving it!
What’s the best advice anyone has given to you? “Have fun,” spoken by my dearest friend on his death bed. It’s a lot easier said than

done. And another one I use during my daily prayer meditation, “I did the best I could.”
Do you have a favorite quote?
I have two. The first is by e.e. cummings: “To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.” The other one is by Shakespeare from Hamlet: “A thought which quarter’d hath but one part wisdom and three parts coward.”
Why should people come to see your "Being Alive" show?
I’ve been very privileged to do the work I love in a variety of different areas in the entertainment field. Out of all that I’ve been able to do, the live concert venue is hands down my favorite. It’s a reservoir of expression and material vaster than all of the oceans put together. You can find things to sing and it’s always different, even if you’ve sung it a hundred times, because it’s going through the filter of the moment. I love doing this, and I love being with the audience. Please, please, if you have nothing to do, come. You can go to sleep if you’re bored, or if you hate it, leave. I promise you I will give you everything I have. I love doing it more than anything I’ve been allowed to do on the planet. The Magic of Hugs by Marlaina Donato
T
hrough the ages, various substances and lifestyle changes have been touted as panaceas, but even in our modern world there is one unexpected soulelixir that might rival the others—the human hug. Virginia Satir, a pioneer in family therapy, is famous for saying, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Even hugging a pet or stuffed animal can lower blood pressure, take the edge off pain and curb the effects of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines. During a hug, preferably the 20-second variety, we can experience a drop in anxiety, thanks to a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol and a friendly burst of the bonding hormone oxytocin. Hugging our spouse, a friend or someone after church can ward off the common cold while helping us feel less alone in a big world.
Hugging is a language unto itself, showing others that they matter. Too often, we postpone physical contact, rushing out the door on the way to work. Couples sometimes reserve embraces only as a prelude to intimacy. Children can be deprived of hugs because of generational and cultural reservation. In the end, most of us don’t have enough healthy, non-sexual touch, which can contribute to loneliness, depression and feelings of separateness. Whether we are born huggers or hug-phobic and warming up to the practice, lifting our arms to express affection or support another person can prove that there are safe places indeed. Here are a few suggestions to add hugs to the day.

T
ORTHODONTIC ALIGNMENT
he assumption that orthodontic treatment is mainly about appearance has been proven wrong with many studies. The correct alignment of the teeth is crucial for good dental health. Untreated orthodontic problems may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, bone breakdown, jaw joint problems and loss of teeth. In addition, uncorrected problems can adversely affect one's speech, general health and self-esteem. Self-confidence almost always increases when a smile is improved. Some of the benefits of having orthodontic treatment: • Reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay by making it easier to clean your teeth properly. • Prevents your teeth from getting chipped or broken due to misalignment. • Prevents your teeth from being worn down prematurely or excessively.
