Newly Certified and Experienced Thermographers at Proactive Health Solutions

L

ynda Witt, owner of Proactive Health Solutions, has recently introduced newly certified thermographer Linda “Fearn” Stanley. Stanley has been with Proactive Health Solutions for about one year now and has passed all her certification requirements. In addition, Juanita Garcia, a fully certified thermographer, is celebrating her sixth year with Proactive Health Solutions, and offers bilingual (Spanish) services. Stanley began her career as a biology major and graduated from Lynda Witt the University of Illinois with a degree in Advertising in 1983. In 1987, she moved to Tucson to attend the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts. Upon graduating, on a whim, she interviewed for a job at Canyon Ranch Spa and Resort in Tucson. She worked there as a massage therapist for over 21 years, mixing traditional Swedish massage with various modalities that facilitated deep relaxation and healing for her clients, including reiki and craniosacral therapy. After a challenging experience with traditional breast cancer screening, Stanley met Witt Juanita Garcia in 2010 and became her client. In November 2018, she was invited by Witt to train as an assistant thermographer. Stanley’s greatest pleasure is providing compassionate and caring service for her clients. After retiring from her career as a HR Specialist, Juanita Garcia pursued a career in massage therapy. This led her to understanding the human body and the importance of being healthy. After her own health challenge surfaced, she began learning all she could about prevention and found thermal imaging. Garcia was Linda “Fearn” thrilled to receive her Level 1 certification after working with Witt Stanley for about 12 months. As she continues to grow as a thermographer, she intends to reach out to other women (and men) to share this technology. Garcia now has four years of experience as a thermographer and looks forward to a continued career with Proactive Health Solutions.

Time for a Spring Health Tune-up

D

r. Nathan Conlee, Executive Director of Winterhaven Health Center, is offering a special deal on a Spring Tune-up, which includes a nutrition consultation, chiropractic, orthopedic and neurologic exam for $137 (normally $230). This offer lasts from March 23 through April 15. As seasons change, we change. In the spring we become more active and demand more Nathan Conlee from our bodies. By getting a tune-up, we avoid a health crisis event or survive such an event faster and with less suffering. Also by examining our neurologic and biomechanical function, reviewing exercise and diet regimen, Conlee can prescribe a protocol to help the body reach maximum function, allowing us to get the most out of life. Rather than trying to educate ourselves and simply guessing and adjusting our diet on our own, Conlee’s metabolic nutrition program is based on a detailed analysis of patient lab work, a thorough questionnaire and even food allergy and sensitivity testing. “We use the full power of current medicine and science to help our patients make the best decision for their specific metabolism possible, whether that means metabolic clearing, diet change or addressing any nutritional imbalances,” says Conlee. The programs prescribed at Winterhaven Health Center are custom tailored to each individual. They re-evaluate each patient’s needs on an ongoing basis to ensure the program’s perfect fit, and even the frequency of the re-evaluation is individualized for each patient’s needs. Location: 3020 N. Country Club Rd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-322-6161, email DrNathanConlee@gmail.com or visit PerformanceNeurology.com. See ad, page 16.

Maintenance Cleaning Plans Available at Pima Cleanpro

P

ima Cleanpro—best known for residential and commercial carpet cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, upholstery cleaning and pet stain and home odor removal—is now offering maintenance plans to keep our homes healthy, clean and looking new all year long at an affordable monthly, quarterly or bi-annual payment. This includes between two and four cleanings per year, based on each household’s needs. Pima Cleanpro uses an eco-friendly, citrus-based cleaning solution that dries in about one to two hours and leaves absolutely no residue, so carpets Steve Nelson stay clean much longer. The Cleanpro system uses little moisture, and with their exclusive ion exchange cleaning technology, the dirt goes from the carpet up into cleaning pads, leaving carpets damp, not wet. Steam cleaning is what most people think of when it comes to carpet cleaning. Unlike Pima Cleanpro’s methods, steam cleaning involves pumping a lot of soap and water into carpets, and attempting to extract them back out, which leaves gallons of soap and water behind in carpets, taking days to dry, and leaves a ton of residue on the carpet, so the carpets re-soil very quickly after they are cleaned. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call Leana Nelson at 520-262-5411 or visit PimaCleanpro.com. See ad, page 4.

Transforming from a Near-Death Experience

A

rizona IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies) will host guest speaker Ruth Secreto to speak on the topic of Steps of Transformation from a Near-Death Experience, on April 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.), at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church. There will also be online access for those who cannot attend. Secreto suffered complications and heart failure during a surgery 30 years ago and had a startling near-death experience (NDE). She found it to be a catch-22: rather than feeling inspired, she found it to be disturbing because she awakened angry, frustrated and confused. This reaction led her life to a dark and uncomfortable place where she Ruth Secreto struggled with alcohol and codependency issues. In time, she found the means to work through her emotional blocks. In the course of her healing, she realized a message had been given during her NDE and had now manifested into her life. She found her purpose and passion, was able to heal herself and later started healing others. Secreto, who lives in Arizona, now speaks to various audiences sharing important information she learned from her NDE. She is a graduate of the University of Akron with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences and a Certification in Alcohol Studies. Her purpose and passion revolves around being of service to others and sharing what she learned. She is a Drug and Alcohol Counselor, an inspirational speaker, a spiritual intuitive and a mentor. She has been featured on the television show Carrying the Message. Costs vary for in-person or online access to the event. In-person event cost is $5 for IANDS members, $10 for non-members. No one is ever turned away due to a lack of funds. Online event cost is $10 for members, $15 for non-members, and includes inperson or online access to the live event, plus a link to the video after it is posted. Location: 4625 E. River Rd., Tucson. Mexicans Return to Old Ways After Ban

A new law bans popular plastic bags in the Mexican capital, and grocery stores are poised to sell reusable synthetic fiber bags. The same law will ban handing out plastic straws, spoons, coffee capsules and other single-use items by 2021. Claudia Hernández, the city’s director of environmental awareness, says, “We are finding that people are returning to baskets, to cucuruchos [cone-shaped rolls of paper].” The old ways are present in other aspects, too. Many residents still use wheeled, folding shopping baskets and some vendors still measure out bulk goods in discarded sardine cans. Grocery stores that give out plastic bags will be fined, so most will opt for reusable shopping bags made of thick plastic fiber for about 75 cents. For hygienic reasons, the law leaves the door open to using plastic bags for such items as perishable deli meats or cheese.

Basics of Detoxification

W

e can begin to detox our system of toxins by simply starting to eat real food. We must stop eating processed food with the added sugars and seed oils that have driven our pandemics of obesity and diabetes. Once we start eating naturally, we begin to eliminate toxins naturally. Autophagy, or restricting eating for windows of time, allows the body to repair and recycle waste or other debris that have built up over time and over that day. Variations of fasting have a big detoxification effect. Gone are the days of having five or six meals or snacks a day. This was the remedy for hypoglycemia and other blood sugar imbalances. Detox programs specific for cleansing bowel, liver, kidney and other organs are available to purchase online. Some favorites are HerbDoc.com, DrClark.com and AriseAndShine.com. Enemas and colonics are crucial in detoxification and removing toxins from the body. They accompany the organ detox programs, fasting and eating real food. Sheila Shea, of Intestinal Health Institute, offers several package options to save clients money on detoxes. Connect at 520-325-9686 or Intestines@SheilaShea.com.

eiki translates as “universal life force” and is an energy modality that promotes healing, stress reduction and wellbeing. It can also be an important component of healing of serious illness and disease. Reiki practitioners have developed the ability to re-create energy balance on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels through a series of attunements passed on from Reiki Master to student. How does reiki heal? If the life force is diminished or blocked in some way, the function of the body is diminished and illness and disease can result. Reiki restores the flow of energy by removing blockages to the flow of chi (another word for life force). Medical studies have shown reiki to have a significant impact on the healing of cancer. Dr. Oz has a reiki practitioner present in his operating room. Reiki programs for patients are in a significant number of hospitals, as medical staff recognize immediate benefits. The FDA approved pulsing Electromagnetic Field Therapy to stimulate bone growth in bone fractures and breaks at a frequency of 7Hz—the same as, and sometimes lower than, the electrical pulse coming from a reiki practitioner. Reiki services enhance physical, emotional, energetic, mental and spiritual wellbeing for clients in whatever ways are for the highest good. Development of clarity and focus as well as connection with soul’s purpose lead to alignment and manifestation. Opening of energy pathways enhances immunity and heals illness and injury in the physical body, while balance on the energetic level increases one’s ability to follow their path in this life with love and gentle lessons.

Maximize Your Home’s Health with Essential Oils

F

by Danielle Dvorak

lu season comes and goes every year, often lasting for months, and this year we are also incredibly concerned about COVID-19. Gratefully, we have choices when it comes to fighting off illness-causing germs and pathogens. The plant kingdom offers several medicinal plants that may act as powerfully as over-the-counter cleaning products and pharmaceutical drugs, but without the harmful side effects. Here is some information on essential oil solutions to help us stay healthy and keep our homes less toxic. Many essential oils have proven broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. For example, thyme oil was shown to exert powerful antimicrobial effects against 25 different types of bacteria (Deans and Richie, 1987). Other essential oils that are powerful germ fighters include oregano, tea tree and clove. Diffusing is the practice of releasing essential oils into the air to purify our surroundings and breathe them into our body for immune support. Add Eucalyptus, Palo Santo, Frankincense, Oregano, Thyme or any enjoyable essential oil to distilled or purified water in a diffuser. Those who don’t have a diffuser can try adding essential oils to a steaming pot of water on the stove, or putting a few drops on a tissue, leaving it where they can slowly evaporate. Human beings are also great diffusers; try putting

a few drops of essential oil (diluted with a fatty oil such as olive, almond or jojoba) on the skin and let the diffusing begin. Instead of using toxic, overly strong and synthetically-scented commerciallyproduced products, we can make our own. A mixture of water, distilled vinegar and

essential oils such as Clove, Oregano, Eucalyptus or Thyme will clean and disinfect just as well. Other natural cleaning substances include salt, baking soda and borax. These beneficial agents can be utilized instead of, or in addition to, the vinegar. The words “fragrance”, “perfume”, “parfum” and “natural fragrance” all mean a man-made, synthetic scent that is toxic to our brain. These are neuro-toxins, which are defined as “a poison which acts on the nervous system”. Read product labels and avoid anything with these particular ingredients listed. Beware that many “natural” products will have a wonderful ingredient listing and then also include these toxic scenting agents. Danielle Dvorak is a Certified Aromatherapist and has been successfully incorporating essential oils into her life since the 1970s. She has her own essential oil product line, HeartScents, and sells wholesale and retail in quantities of 5 ml up to 1 lb, passing on some great savings. Think Outside the House Expanding Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning traditionally heralds a new beginning, an opportunity to take stock of hearth and home and a time of renewal regardless of the season. Clearing figurative cobwebs is as important as sweeping away real ones, and while most folks focus on giving their abode a thorough airing and scrubbing, there’s plenty to tend to outside before the heat of summer sets in. Clear out potentially dead grass and leaves and other organic matter near the sides of the house to prevent termites and other insect infestations. Collect the organic matter, add in food scraps and compost it all to benefit the garden. Composting sends the nutrients of loose ingredients into the soil as a natural fertilizer. EarthEasy.com/ grow_compost.html reports it can help divert as much as 30 percent of household waste from the garbage can. Make sure to check the top and outer walls of the

house. Upraised nails in a shingled roof or deteriorated shingles or gaps where plumbing vent pipes penetrate the surface—possibly due to high winds, falling branches or ice thawing in colder climes—can produce small breaks and holes for water to seep through onto tops of ceilings. That can possibly lead to mold as summer temperatures rise and water leaks into the interior of the house. OldHouseWeb.com says collars of vent pipes should be tight, as “some older [ones] can loosen over time and even some newer rubber collars crack and leak long before the shingles fail.” Also, check the gutters to make sure they are clear of packed leaves and tree branches. Don’t forget the family car, which may need its own spring cleanup. Go green with a natural soap to remove slush and grime, and then take a close look at the toll the past year has taken. Pebbles and rocks may have been kicked onto the sides of the car, resulting in small chips and abrasions of the paint from which rust might spread. The nonprofit Car Care Council (CarCare.org) recommends covering the areas as quickly as possible and if necessary to use a little clear nail polish—nontoxic, of course—as a quick fix for minor paint damage until a proper touch-up can be scheduled. Then there’s the undercarriage. Salt particles that may have been used in treating roads and highways in icy regions may be lodged into crevices which can corrode metal and functional parts. Make sure the hose sprayer also reaches these areas.

Coronavirus/COVID-19 What You Need to Know and Do

T

by Lance J. Morris

he Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is currently causing illness and unrest across the U.S. and world. Here is just some of what we know and what is being speculated (as of mid-March 2020), as well as some common-sense self-help ideas and natural therapeutic options for these uncertain times. Let’s first put COVID-19 in perspective relative to the annual flu. The flu as we know it has existed for about 2,000 years. As people are exposed and catch it, they develop antibodies. These antibodies confer natural immunity, for a significant percentage of people, when the next exposure interval occurs. Due to viral mutations, this immunity is far from perfect and the cycle repeats again. In the U.S., as many as 26 to 45 million people are infected annually. In 2019, there were over 250,000 hospitalizations and over 14,000 people died. Between 2017 and 2018, the worst flu season in modern history, over 80,000 people died. The novel Coronavirus was potentially first seen in November 2019 and as such hasn’t been around long enough for anyone to develop antibodies to confer natural immunity. Currently in the U.S. (as of March 20) there are 15,219 reported cases with 201 deaths. Superficially, one might compare these numbers and think that the Coronavirus is being blown way out of proportion. This would be a grave error if we delve more carefully into the facts. The U.S. has a population of about 330,000,000 people. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the flu at its worst kills about 60,000 people annually. This represents a mortality rate of .0002. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), based on the early

numbers out of China, the death rate is approximately 3.4 percent or .034. Many health professionals in the world believe this number is probably low and may realistically be closer to 5 percent. As is common, world governments are notorious for under reporting health morbidity and mortality figures. When we extrapolate the 3.4 percent to the U.S., the potential mortality rate is 11,220,000. Currently, according to the White House, contrary speculation is that these numbers are being exaggerated and the correct figure may be closer to only .5 percent. Unfortunately, even .5 percent still equals 1,650,000 deaths. To complicate the issue, we are currently dealing with a critical shortage of tests. As more testing becomes available, we will inevitably see an exponential increase in positive results, which will rapidly change our current data base of cases here in the U.S.

Similarities: COVID-19 and Flu SYMPTOMS

Both cause fever, cough, body aches, fatigue; sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Can be mild or severe, even fatal. Can result in pneumonia. TRANSMISSION

Both can be spread from person to person through droplets in the air from an infected person coughing, sneezing or talking. A possible difference: Coronavirus might be spread through the airborne route, meaning that tiny droplets remaining in the air could cause disease in others even after the ill person is no longer near.

Flu can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear, and Coronavirus is believed to be spread in the same manner, but this is not yet confirmed. Current research suggests that 80 percent of people infected will have mild to no symptoms; 20 percent will be symptomatic and need treatment; and up to 5 percent may be life threatening. Those most susceptible have pre-existing health complications, suppressed immune systems or are over the age of 60. Healthy children seem to have a much lower risk quotient. PREVENTION

For both COVID-19 and the flu, a reduction in transmission and infection can be achieved by frequent, thorough hand washing, coughing into the crook of our elbow, staying home when sick and limiting contact with people who are infected. Some additional home health measures and tips may be helpful to avoid further spread of disease. Eat healthy, non-processed, whole foods, avoid concentrated sugars and drink lots of pure water. Get adequate rest and exercise. Daily, take 1,000 mg of vitamin C three times, at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D, 5,000 IU of vitamin A and at least 60 mg of Zinc. Take immune stimulating/antiviral herbs like Echinacea, licorice, garlic and burdock. Use essential oils as air sanitizers, such as eucalyptus, ravintsara, thyme and tea tree. Use 1 teaspoon of nano silver twice daily. If you believe you or someone you love may be infected with COVID-19, please seek medical attention. A boardcertified naturopathic physician, who specializes in treating viral infections and strengthening the immune system, can administer IV vitamin C, which has been shown to be beneficial to many with COVID-19 in China. EDGE INTEGRATIVE WELLNESS Get Your Edge Back

O

by Suzie Agrillo

vercoming health issues can be one of the biggest challenges of our lives. Traditional medicine alone is not always the answer. At Edge Integrative Wellness, owner Maria Crawford, FNP utilizes a multifaceted therapeutic approach to help her patients restore their health in our toxic world. Crawford is a Tucson native and a 2004 University of Arizona graduate with an MS in nursing. She began her career as a nurse in the pediatric unit of Tucson Medical Center. A former triathlete, she has always been involved in sports and nutrition. A bad car accident was the impetus for her to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner specializing in sports medicine. After graduation and some practical experience, this plan was revised. Crawford

realized that her true passion is functional medicine. “I love it so much. It was like opening Pandora’s Box. It’s such an evolving field,” she observes. Crawford opened Edge Integrative Wellness in 2018. “Down the rabbit hole I went,” she says. “I think the true root cause of why people are ill is environmental toxicity. What I’ve found is that many people have been exposed to mold, chemicals, parasites and other toxic substances. This exposure can cause pain, fatigue and other illnesses.”

Toxic Overload We acquire toxins from our environment by breathing them in, by ingesting them or through physical contact. Every day we are exposed to new and stronger chemicals, air and water pollution and radiation. We

NaturalTucson.com

often eat more sugar and refined foods, use prescription or street drugs or turn to alcohol to help us deal with rising stress levels. Other factors, such as lack of sleep, exercise and even negative attitudes, are thought to enable toxins to build up in the body and upset its regulation. If we are taking in more toxins than we can eliminate, our body will reach a state of toxicity. The digestive system can also wreak havoc on the immune system. If our digestive system is not working properly, there may be an overgrowth of destructive bacteria/yeast in the gut that encourages even more toxins to proliferate. Detoxing improves the health of the immune system. It will also increase our vitality and underlying health, and may even help with weight loss. Crawford will navigate her clients’ journeys through the complex maze of treating their illness. She considers herself to be the Sherlock Holmes of medicine. “I focus on discovering the root cause of a patient’s ailments,” she comments. Patients come to her with a white flag, because they are in dire need of getting their health back. “Sometimes the perfect storm causes the problem,” she notes. An environmental toxicity specialist, Crawford is also trained in medical weight loss, anti-aging, hormone replacement therapy, endocrinology, peptide therapy and genomic evaluation. Edge Integrative Wellness utilizes state-of-the-art genetic evaluations to customize patients’ fitness and wellness plans.

Medical Weight Loss Genetic testing is used by Crawford for the Medical Weight Loss program at Edge. She analyzes an individual’s genetic code to determine what types of exercise and diet to recommend. “Through DNA, we learn how many

fats, carbohydrates and proteins you should be eating, how to tailor your supplements to support your genetics and the best type of exercise for your genetics in order to optimize weight loss and improve fitness,” she says. Crawford often prescribes a ketogenic diet for weight loss, using fat for fuel. She also uses intermittent fasting to treat fatigue, brain fog and joint pain. She discloses that her diet is organic, unprocessed food. She avoids corn, canola, cottonseed, soybean, sunflower and safflower oil, due to their high omega-6 content. To maintain her own health, Crawford is physically active. She currently has a personal trainer, hikes and practices yoga to remain fit.

Adverse Effects of Stress Stressful situations trigger our body’s fight

or flight response, a biochemical reaction that puts the body on red alert. If stress continues unabated, physical and mental health can be undermined as the stress hormones disrupt the functioning of the immune and circulatory systems. Thus, the body becomes less efficient at eliminating toxins and the toxic load increases. Another important member of the Edge team is Andria Pizzato, who holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Arizona. In 2017, she completed a fellowship at Dr. Andrew Weil’s Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. In addition to offering women’s health services, stress reduction and lifestyle changes, Pizzato helps her patients with functional and regenerative body therapies to speed up the elimination of toxins. Edge Integrative Wellness offers memberships to make the cost of these therapies more affordable.

Complementary Detox and Pain Relief Body Therapies Prolozone is a form of nonsurgical ligament reconstruction and a treatment for chronic pain. It is a connective tissue injection therapy

of a collagen producing substance and ozone gas, which can reconstruct damaged tissue in and around joints. It signals the body’s own mechanisms to do its own repair and heal. Pizzato also administers advanced intravenous (IV) therapies, including vitamin C therapy, glutathione, Meyers, NAD and ozone. The vitamin C IV provides a powerful boost of immune enhancing ascorbic acid (vitamin C). This IV therapy delivers from 15,000 up to 50,000 mg of vitamin C that infuses straight into the bloodstream, which surpasses the maximum orally tolerated dose. Glutathione protects our cells from free radical damage and helps to improve cellular function at all levels. Glutathione is extremely important for maintaining intercellular health. Glutathione levels have been shown to diminish substantially with age, as well as with chronic illness and poor health. Meyers therapy includes key cellular ingredients necessary for a robust immune system and optimal energy. It includes powerful antioxidants such as B-complex, vitamin C and minerals, including zinc, selenium and magnesium.

NAD+ is a naturally occurring substance that is in every cell in the body. Boosting NAD+ may help manage a wide spectrum of diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer. Originally used for drug addicts and people with neurological disorders, some research has shown that it can improve mental clarity, alertness, concentration and memory. IV ozone therapy helps with pain, coronary artery disease, boosting the immune system, chronic fatigue, macular degeneration, aids in the anti-aging process and much more. Peptide therapy is administered orally or by injection. It can repair the immune system, bacterial issues and diabetes.

Additional Therapies Other therapies offered at Edge Integrative Wellness include Tissue Regeneration Therapy and LYMPHpresso. The Tissue Regeneration Therapy machine can deliver effective shock wave therapy for the treatment of injuries and degenerative ailments. This treatment is approved by the FDA and is highly effective at treating chronic pain. The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system, the “sewage system” of the body. Its function is to remove cellular debris, toxins and waste products, such as bacteria and proteins from the body. This is part of the body’s immune system and is essential in maintaining health. The LYMPHpresso System is a full-body suit that works through compression, deep pressure therapy and infrared heat to improve energy, enhance lymph and blood flow.

The Mind-Body Connection Well-being depends on maintaining a balance between our emotional, mental, spiritual and physical health. If this balance is upset, it disrupts the body’s harmony and leads to poor health. The goal at Edge Integrative Wellness is the restoration of total mind-body-spirit healthfulness. This might range from hormonal evaluation and treatment to providing patients with techniques to help connect them to the activities in their lives that bring joy. As an adjunct to the functional medicine offered at Edge Integrative Wellness, Paula Rapp, Certified Emotion and Body Code Practitioner, helps patients release trapped emotions in the subconscious mind that can affect well-being. Energy healing is a holistic practice that activates the body’s energy systems to remove blocks and stimulate the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. One might be striving for longevity so they can live to see their grandkids, or maybe they want to lose weight to fit into their favorite pair of jeans. In order to maintain determination and consistency in reaching those health goals, Crawford opines, “Always remember why you started. Never give up on something you really want.” Edge Integrative Wellness is an alternative to traditional medicine that offers a wide variety of innovative treatments to heal and improve life. Their programs help clients to restore their underlying health, and to once again be prepared to face the stresses of modern day living. Edge Integrative Wellness is located at Plaza Palomino, 2900 N. Swan, #102, Tucson. Connect at 520-232-3360 or EdgeIntegrativeWellness.com. See ad. page 5. 20

What first piqued your interest in bees?

Initially, apocalyptic headlines about bee decline and colony collapse with female worker bees leaving hives and not coming back alarmed me from a human food chain perspective. It happened to be around the time I realized I had completely lost touch with the natural world I so loved as a child. I started looking for bees and became completely immersed in their world; the more I watched them, the more I lost track of time and the more questions I had. I also began to more worry about the bees themselves than about their decline’s effect on us.

fected you personally?

I dropped out of school as a teenager. Bees are the only thing I’ve truly ever studied; I am self-taught in insect biology and ecology. I have read scientific papers that I would have never thought were for the likes of me in my quest to understand more about bees. Also, when I feel overwhelmed with life, because of my interest in bees I have something else to focus on. I can lose hours and hours walking in the woods and totally forget my problems. I have learned to tune into the tiny things, the fungi and miniscule plants I would have otherwise walked past.

What is one of the most interesting aspects of bee behavior?
Some years ago, I remember vividly a day on my patio listening to bees with my eyes closed and seeing if I could recognize them by their buzzes. Bumblebees have a deep booming buzz, for example, and I recognized this, but suddenly it changed to a high-pitched sound like a dental drill. I opened my eyes, and it was a bumblebee going round and round the sides of a Welsh poppy, sounding really frantic and having a pollen bath. As it turns out, she was sonicating, otherwise known as buzz foraging. This is how bees pollinate tomatoes. A lot of flowers don’t give up pollen easily, but the bumblebee knows exactly what to do. It grasps the flower and continues to vibrate without moving its wings. This produces high-frequency vibrations that trigger the tomato flower to open and explodes pollen out onto the bee.

What are a few ways that we can help support bee populations?

Maintain gardens, backyards and balconies with a variety of nectar-rich plants and create habitat for bees to nest in. Plant flowers that will bloom in succession. Stop using pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals, because the bees are taking that cocktail of chemicals back to the hive or nest, and collectively they are more dangerous than the sum of their parts. Also, dare to be less tidy in your garden; grow wildflowers and let flowering weeds like clover and dandelions be. Watch and see what comes. It won’t just be the bees: If we get it right for the bees, it spirals out to other species. It’s never too late to reconnect and find the curiosity and awe that you experienced as a child. It was bees that captured my attention and imagination; for someone else it may be something else, but if you make time to stop, sit and look around you, you will find the wonder in nature. n a society where elders are too often belittled, denigrated and dismissed, it is no wonder people are afraid to grow old. Youth is marketed and glorified. Yet for those of us over 50, who would really want to be 20 again, if we couldn’t take our experience and wisdom with us? Unfortunately a huge percentage of the elderly in the U.S. are sick and broken. Not because of their time on the planet, but because of their choices around food, rest, work, exercise, living their purpose and lack of spinal care. Most Americans get their teeth and eyes checked regularly, but never get their brain and nervous system checked by a chiropractor. A small percentage of Americans have gone to chiropractors when they really hurt, but that’s like going to the dentist just in time for the root canal and never getting teeth cleaned. Our nervous system continually needs to be refreshed and rebooted, a lot like a phone. If we do not take care of our spine, we will lose strength, flexibility and efficiency. This vastly accelerates the aging process. The beauty of growing old is all the wisdom and experience we attain. But if our body is broken and we have low energy, it is hard to express and share all our profound knowing and gifts. Research on chiropractic shows that people are three times more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices when they take care of their spine. Dr. Joanne Haupert at Inspired Healing is forming a saging circle of people over the age of 50, coming together to explore what it means to be an elder, what it’s like to live in a culture where the elderly are not usually respected, how to access and express our wisdom more fully and more. Breathe Cleaner Air to Help Bone Health Air pollution has long been linked to lung cancer, stroke and respiratory disease, and now research has found that it can lead to osteoporosis, as well. Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health studied the bone mass and density of 3,717 people living in villages near Hyderabad, India. These were compared to fine particulate air pollution levels, which averaged more than three times the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The researchers also surveyed in-home cooking over wood, coal and other biomass sources. The results showed that exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with lower levels of bone mass, and that cooking over fires did not have that effect. “Inhalation of polluting particles could lead to bone mass loss through the oxidative stress and inflammation caused by air pollution,” says lead author Otavio T. Ranzani.

Earth Day 2020 Honoring Mother Earth

O

by J. Garnet

n April 22, nature enthusiasts around the country, and in over 190 countries around the world, will be celebrating and honoring Mother Earth. This year is a milestone, as Earth Day has its 50th birthday. In 1970, Gaylord Nelson, a previous governor and United States Senator from Wisconsin, founded the first Earth Day. It would be the conception of a new and conscious environmental movement to ensure the safety of the planet. It’s believed that when Nelson saw the ravages of a massive oil spill in 1969 off the shores of Santa Barbara, California, firsthand, he was driven to take action on a national level. Decades leading up to the first Earth Day was considered the age of the activist. Small groups of people were protesting the 26

lack of equality for women, lack of civil rights, expensive and senseless wars and killing, water and air pollution and the loss of plant and animal life. People were voicing concerns about the continuing development of the country, and it didn’t look promising. Activists observed power plants and factories belching out toxic plumes of smoke, the dumping of raw sewage into rivers and streams, pesticides killing Bald Eagles and other animals, loss of wilderness, extinction of wildlife and the paving over of their ecosystems, which drastically reduced forests and vegetation around the country. Nelson became a central figure in bringing all of these activists together for a common cause, and what started as a grassroots campaign is now an international event. Two years ago, the

United Nations officially recognized April 22 as International Mother Earth Day. Within eight months of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was created. The Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act were all ratified. Republicans and Democrats, the rich, the poor, the urban and rural populations alike all came together with a common goal—to take the steps needed in order to preserve the planet. Why wouldn’t people want to get involved and help heal the planet? It is the biggest supplier of natural medicine, after all. Although the creation of agencies and laws regarding the environment has had overwhelming support over the years, some would say that the earth is spiraling out of control once more. The Center for Biological Diversity has predicted that over one million species of plants and animals could become extinct over the next 50 years. These numbers are staggering not only because of the loss, but because many of the plants that will potentially vanish have ingredients that are used for natural medicine. Many of the plants that will cease to exist may have untapped or unidentified medicinal value and will be lost forever. Even though research and discovery of new natural medicines has been on the rise, there is still lots to be discovered, some of which will never be found, because the plants which house the medicine will simply not be here to examine. Around the world, countries are in a position to make major strides when it comes to protecting the planet. It’s believed that one in seven people around the world will celebrate Earth Day. Trees will be planted, gardens will be built, employees will car pool or ride a bike to

work, millions of dollars will be donated and Mother Earth will be honored for her plethora of natural gifts. The facts show that major progress has occurred, however some of the potential dangers that plague the planet today are being caused by actions and events that happened long before the first Earth Day. Unfortunately, many of the one billion Earth Day celebrants will regress back to a place where the planet is not the celebrity of the day. If the enthusiasm that’s felt and displayed on April 22 each year could extend through the rest of the calendar, humanity would look very different, and the Earth would be in her rightful place as Mother. One way that the populace could embrace this planet is to become more familiar with the local vegetation. Knowing what grows naturally in neighborhoods and nature can hasten the pace at which natural medicine becomes more mainstream. It’s not just being able to identify specific trees and other plants, however. It can be taken a step further by finding out the medicinal values and ingredients that this nearby vegetation can offer. With knowledge comes power, and knowing what can treat and cure disease and illness is a benefit that most people can attain. Planting home gardens that are full of plants and flowers, and knowing how they can be used as medicine, is the best gift for our planet and for each other. Mother Earth has been providing for her inhabitants since the very beginning, and it’s time now for people to start giving back by being aware of the boundless possibilities that can take place, healing humanity in the most natural and beneficial way.

or those that want to impress guests with a little floral flourish at their next dinner party, here are some tips from the experts. Garnishing is a great way to use fresh edible flowers and show off their natural shapes and colors, says Cassie Winslow, author of Floral Libations: 41 Drinks + Ingredients and founder of the blog DecoTartelette.com, in Santa Cruz, California. “Unless it’s a small pretty bloom, you’ll want to just use a couple of petals though, as whole flowers can be hard to drink around otherwise.” Simply infusing fragrant flowers in water overnight can be a refreshing upgrade to table water, says Marie Viljoen, author of Forage, Harvest, Feast and the 66-Square-Feet blog, based in Brooklyn. “Go for flowers with lots of fragrance, like jasmine, roses or violets. Just put in cool

water overnight and strain out the flowers in the morning.” Drinks can be dressed up with a floral sugar or salt rim using rose or lavender. “I like to rim half the glass on the side and not just the top, to give it a cascading effect,” says Winslow. Another fun party trick is to set up a bar and let guests garnish their drinks themselves. Winslow suggests almost any cocktail recipe can be turned into a mocktail by using sparkling water instead of alcohol; for example, a virgin lilac margarita greyhound. Floral ice cubes also add a fancy touch to the dinner table. To capture the blossoms in ice, Viljoen suggests filling the tray halfway with water, putting in the flowers, freezing and then filling in the rest of the water to refreeze.

NATURE BASICS: Recordkeeping for New Cannabis Patients

I

n this fast paced world, there are countless pieces of information that must be organized and recorded. Some people have the ability to remember passwords, birthdays, anniversaries and schedules without writing them down or recording them somewhere. Others have a difficult time remembering where the car keys are or what they had for dinner the night before. Keeping track of vital information, organizing it and storing it somewhere is becoming a necessity. Many people have a file cabinet at home, and even more businesses have them scattered around the office and behind desks. Having valuable information safe and organized can make daily life easier. There are some people who are better than others when it comes to organiz-

ing and recording information. There are circumstances and situations that warrant some form of running record. Balancing finances, savings accounts, checkbooks, staying on top of a medication regimen, doctor’s visits, immunizations, pantry and refrigerator inventory, work and school schedules and jotting down certain foods and calories when dieting are just a few everyday tasks that people do without really thinking too much about it. There are some activities that are much more important than others, and when it comes to healthy living and natural medicines, it is vital and necessary. It may seem easy to manage health when a daily or weekly pillbox can be filled and stored for medications. The dosage, when and how to take medicine is actually

not that difficult when it’s all spelled out on the prescription. With the major shift toward natural medicine that’s taking place, where the FDC does not regulate dose and use, it can make being an advocate for one’s own health difficult, or at least a lot of work. With thousands of herbs, spices and other natural supplements on the market, the first hurdle to overcome is to decide what is best for the individual and what specific conditions are to be treated. There will of course be the same trial and error process that physicians sometimes need to go through to find the most therapeutic levels. Every person’s body is different and reactions to medicines and supplements may not yield the same results for everyone. The period of time needed to uncover the right medicine, the correct dosage and to determine how well it will work, is a task that must be a priority when someone decides to become their own medicine advocate. News about medicinal cannabis can be found almost everywhere these days. The change from prescription drugs to marijuana is paramount yet effective after hours of reading, researching and trial and error. There is a lot of information that’s needed in order to find the most effective components of the cannabis plant. In the beginning, it may be difficult to find exactly what works best. Marijuana dispensaries often include data sheets for tracking and recording information in new patient packets. The process of sifting through so many different products, strains, dosing, delivery methods and cost must be maintained. There are hundreds of different marijuana strains to choose from. Many strains offer the same medicinal values for specific illness or disease. Begin by recording which strain is being consumed. Keep in mind that tracking the levels of CBD and THC in the medicine can also aid when determining the therapeutic value. Even though different strains may help one symptom, it does not mean that they will all be as effective for the individual. Record which strain is being used for what symptom. When is

At Earth’s Healing, the budtenders all go through extensive training that can help ease the difficulty in understanding the “how to” and “how much” when looking for the natural way to heal. Consume Grape Seed Extract to Improve Cholesterol and Lower Inflammation Grape seed extract, an antioxidant-rich supplement that is a byproduct of the wine and juice industry, significantly improves both total and LDL cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels, and lowers markers of inflammation, concludes a meta-review of 15 randomized trials in the journal Phytotherapy Research. Researchers from Iran, Canada and Croatia concluded that the popular extract also improves fasting glucose levels, but has little effect on HbA1c or HDL cholesterol levels.

Take Echinacea to Reduce Anxiety Echinacea extract may be helpful for situation-induced anxiety, indicates a new study from Hungary’s Institute of Experimental Medicine, in Budapest. The researchers tested 64 middle-aged people that had scored high on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. They were given either 80 milligrams Echinacea angustifolia root extract or a placebo every day for seven days, followed by a three-week washout period during which no pills were taken. Those taking the echinacea started experiencing less anxiety than the placebo-takers by day seven, and scored significantly lower in “state anxiety”, marked by arousal connected to specific dangers or threats. Measures of “trait anxiety”, in which anxiety is an ongoing personal characteristic, improved slightly compared to the placebo group. Improvements were maintained even during the washout period.

the medicine being taken? How much is being taken? How is it being consumed? How long does it take to start feeling relief? How much does the product cost? These are all questions that need to be answered and tracked. It may take experimenting with several different strains to find the one that works best. Don’t assume that all strains are equal, or be discouraged when one doesn’t work well. Notate the results and try another strain. Develop a scale to determine the effectiveness, where 1 may mean that the product has little result, and a 7 can indicate that the medicine works well but could be a little better. This will help in the future because knowing what works and what doesn’t will assist in making decisions about what to use in the future, and after trying numerous products it may be difficult to remember unless recorded. Unless tracking and recording individual results is done, it will be like trying to decide which of 100 paths to take in a forest in order to get to the destination that is expected. By simply keeping track of as many details as possible about each product, dose and efficacy, it can make the transitional process that much easier. As time consuming and daunting as it may be, some people will decide to bypass natural medicine and just stay the course while trying to manage their own healthcare. Recordkeeping should not intimidate the new patient. There are many people who are highly trained and willing to help in the process. At Earth’s Healing, the educational materials, the product breakdowns and the guidance which is offered can make a very difficult process that much easier.

Try Pine Bark to Improve Erectile Function and Cholesterol Erectile dysfunction, an early diabetic indicator, responds to treatment with pine bark extract, Slovakian researchers report. They tested 53 diabetic and non-diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction, giving half of them the extract (marketed as Pycnogenol) and the other half a placebo for three months. The pine bark extract improved erectile function by 45 percent in the diabetes group and 22 percent in the non-diabetes group. It also lowered LDL cholesterol by 21 percent and reduced blood sugar levels in the diabetes group. April 2020

lowers and other budding botanical elements this spring aren’t just eye candy to dress the table; they can bless an everyday beverage with intoxicating new scents, flavors and colors. “It’s such a joy to see a beautiful flower or plant, smell it and then add it to a delightful beverage or meal. Plants have so much medicine to share, and it’s fun to play with that,” says Myra Sinnott, an aromatherapist and owner of Essential Botany, in Washington, D.C. Many beverage favorites can be given a floral twist with little effort, says Cassie Winslow, author of Floral Libations: 41 Drinks + Ingredients and founder of the blog DecoTartelette.com, in Santa Cruz, California. Winslow’s go-to drinks include lavender-infused lemonade and rose petal almond milk, which can be served hot or cold. “I also love an iced lavender café au lait. If I’m feeling extra fancy, I’ll use fresh flower ice cubes, too.” Dried hibiscus is another favorite of Winslow’s, as even a few petals of the concentrated dark magenta flower will brighten and beautify any beverage—even a yogurt-based drink. While many botanical drink recipes call for simple sugar syrup, Winslow suggests honey with a splash of water as a

substitute. Other drinks are naturally sweet, like jasmine tea steeped in apple cider. Sinnott likes to fuse the power of flowers with other botanical elements such as rose petals in a light raspberry drink. “I also use rosewater in a warm elixir with a base of reishi mushroom tea, goji berries, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger, cacao, pearl powder and honey. Rose is a heart-opener and vitalizes the body with the immune-boosting reishi and the other tonifying ingredients,” says Sinnott. Winslow stresses the importance of buying organic ingredients, as many flowers are sprayed with toxic pesticides—or better yet, home-grown. She suggests the tea aisle of natural food stores is a good place for procuring organic floral ingredients such as chamomile and jasmine, which often come unblended in whole form. Dried flowers are easier to source and are often more potent than fresh, she says. “Fresh is pretty, but can be more subtle in flavor.” Her rose salt recipe, which can be used to rim drinks or seasonal dishes, calls for dried roses, which have a longer shelf life and won’t clump up like fresh petals. Marie Viljoen, Brooklyn-based author of Forage, Harvest, Feast: A Wild-Inspired Cuisine, suggests using cold infusions rather

While botanical ingredients can be obtained commercially, it can be more fun—and frugal—to forage for them, suggests Viljoen, founder of the blog 66SquareFeet.blogspot. com. “It’s a lot of fun to go out to collect ingredients you cannot find in the store. You can experience unique textures, flavors and perfumes, and play with wild ingredients that have been all but forgotten,” she says. Some of Viljoen’s seasonal foraged favorites include the fragrant elderflower, honeysuckle and common milkweed flower. “I like to capture milkweed’s fragrance and deep pink color in a wild soda or a sweet cordial.” For newbie foragers, drink ingredients can be sourced as easily as herbs from a window box, like the antiviral thyme, which makes for a delicious wild soda made from a handful of herbs, sweetener and water left on the countertop a few days to lightly ferment and fizz. Another spring favorite, tender young spruce tips, has a sour flavor that ferments well with strawberries and rhubarb, says Viljoen. The same recipe can also be used to make vinegar, a longer process resulting in a more enduring product with great botanical properties. “You can create a sipping vinegar, which is good to mix with seltzer or slow-cook with,” says Viljoen. Whether botanical ingredients are foraged, bought or brought in from the backyard garden to be put in a hot tea, a cocktail or a cold brew, the magic is in the making. “Flowers are endless fun to experiment with, especially when added to everyday drinks and dishes. It brings life to the kitchen,” says Winslow. April Thompson, a freelance writer in Washington, D.C., can be reached at AprilWrites.com.

Cleanse the crystals, by first rinsing and gently scrubbing them under running water, then place in the sun for a few hours and whisper some love poetry to them.

Unconditional Love Here’s an Indian-inspired herbal infusion featuring classic Ayurvedic herbs that help spread unconditional love that is so needed in the world right now. It’s recommended that you serve the infusion on heated rose quartz crystals; this will continue to emanate the love. This recipe is best made in larger quantities and stored for use throughout the year or whenever you need to spread or share more love with friends and family. Yields: 3½ oz beverage .7 oz cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) ½ oz ginger root (Zingiber officinalis), dried .2 oz ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera), dried .2 oz rhatavari root (Asparagus racemosus), dried ½ oz rose petals (Rosa spp), dried .4 oz rose hips (Rosa canina), dried 1 oz tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), dried For the warm rose quartz: 3-4 Rough pieces of rose quartz crystal Mix all the herbs together in a large bowl, then decant into a sealable pouch or jar, being sure to store away from direct sunlight.

Place the crystals in the oven on a low heat (158 to 170° F) for 15 minutes, or until hot. Place the crystals in the teacups. For a pot for 3 to 4 people, take 6 heaping teaspoons of the blend, pour over freshly boiled water, infuse with the lid on for 5 to 6 minutes, then fine strain and serve in cups over the warm pieces of rose quartz crystal. Recipe courtesy of Michael Isted, the Herball.

Dandelion Honey Bowl of Soul “I love to make a bowl of soul when I need to unwind, as this beverage is quite soothing,” says Cassie Winslow. “Dandelions have a subtle spice that pairs so nicely with other warming spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. Steeped in your favorite nutty milk, this’ll be your new go-to goodie when you want to sit with your thoughts, gaze out the window and sip on something warm.” Yields: one beverage 1 cup, unsweetened, almond milk or hazelnut milk 1 Tbsp honey (or agave sweetener) 1 dandelion tea bag Freshly ground nutmeg for garnish

Natural Awakenings recommends using organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) and non-bromated ingredients whenever possible.

In a small saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Whisk the milk, then slowly add the honey or agave sweetener and whisk together. Pour the milk mixture into a large mug. Add the tea bag and allow to steep for five minutes. Discard the tea bag. Sprinkle the nutmeg on top. ORTHO FASTBRACES INVISALIGN

T

he assumption that orthodontic treatment is more about appearance has been proven wrong with studies. The correct alignment of the teeth is crucial for a good dental health.

Untreated orthodontic problems may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, bone destruction, jaw joint problems and loss of teeth. In addition, uncorrected problems can adversely affect one's speech, general health and self-esteem. Self-confidence almost always increases when a smile is improved. Some of the benefits of having orthodontic treatment: • Reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay by making it easier to clean your teeth properly. • Prevents your teeth from getting chipped or broken due to misalignment. • Prevents your teeth from being worn down prematurely or excessively.

Dr Wissinger is bringing the newest technology in the orthodontic world to Tucson! Discover the Fastbraces difference! Fast, comprehensive treatment in months... not years!
