Reiki and doTERRA Essential Oils support your journey and may help you manage stress, reduce pain and increase the number of positive moments in your life,” says Sidney. Sidney has developed an additional area of expertise through her work with people who are going through end-of-life transitions. Combining the use of reiki, essential oils and home visits, she is able to help clients manage pain, achieve deep relaxation and find comforting, spiritual connection as they prepare to move on. In her view, wellness not only involves how we conduct our lives, but also how we face the end of them.

Physiological and Therapeutic Considerations of Singing by Sarah Evans
I
n 1925, Dr. Eugene Kolisko came to know Valborg WerbeckSvardstrom’s Uncovering the Voice school of singing. He was amazed to find that this process for singing and its practical exercises were in accordance with Rudolf Steiner’s threefoldness of the human organization. This gave him the key to how human artistic activity can be understood on a physiological basis. Kolisko found Werbeck-Svardstrom’s singing method to be created from a purely artistic sensibility, and yet it was in complete harmony with the physiological facts he had come to recognize as correct. He then strove to live this method by taking private lessons, classes and observing numerous other students. Kolisko discovered that in this school, singing is regarded as coming from the entire human being and not produced from single physical organs, it lives in every human being and can only be prevented from appearing by physical hindrances. Therefore, this kind of singing not only has artistic forces, but also therapeutic. He confirmed again and again that if artistic capabilities were cultivated in the right way, ideas of inferiority (leading to illnesses) and atrophy of all kinds are healed. Through his own research, practice and treatments, Kolisko found that the singing exercises had a healing effect on respiratory and throat disorders. Werbeck-Svardstrom had already noticed changes in her many years of teaching, and together they developed a kind of “curative singing”. They achieved satisfactory results with asthma, stuttering, language learning difficulties and poor hearing in children, as well as disturbances in the throat, pharynx and nasal cavities. The School for Speech in Song, established by Sarah Evans, is inspired by Frau Werbeck’s School of Uncovering the Voice and shares the exercises for our healing and joy. Reduce Risk of Complications after Breast Biopsy
A
xillary Web Syndrome (AWS) is an early post-operative complication after axillary lymph node dissection or sentinel lymph biopsy and can occur in non-breast cancer patients with axillary node biopsy. AWS is characterized by sudden upper arm pain, aggravated by elevating the shoulder, exhibiting tightness and limited range of motion. Subcutaneous tissue draws in, presenting cording under in the armpit, breast, chest wall and upper or lower arm. Post-operative exercises combined with Manual Lymphatic Drainage reduces the incidence of AWS. In one 2017 study published in Journal of Phlebology and Lymphology, 400 women with breast cancer were randomly selected into two groups of 200 and compared for the incidence of AWS between physical exercises (PE) versus manual lymphatic drainage (MLD & PE). Women were instructed on the importance of self-care 24 hours before mastectomy surgery. After procedure, patients began PE or MLD & PE for three days with 20- to 30-minute sessions, twice daily. Patients continued self-care for three months, at which time the study period concluded. The number of patients with AWS in the MLD & PE group were significantly fewer. At month one, PE: 20 vs. MLD & PE: 7. At month two, PE: 29 vs. MLD & PE: 5. At month three, PE: 22 vs. MLD & PE: 3. Considering earlier studies regarding the prevention of lymphedema, MLD in combination with PE can be an effective strategy for preventing AWS and is a treatment needed for postoperative breast cancer survivors. Hey Doc, Why Am I Shrinking?
W
hile losing height with age may be common, it is not inevitable. Estimates vary, but on average people lose Ÿ to ½ inch every decade after age 40 or 50, with women generally losing more than men. Moreover, the greater the shrinkage, the greater the risk of hip and other non-vertebral fractures. Several studies have found that people over 65 who lost at least 2 inches in the past 15 to 20 years were at significantly higher risk for hip fracture than those who shrank less. This makes sense because if we are not taking regular care of our spine with chiropractic, it will begin to break down. This breakdown will make us shorter as well as more at risk for fractures. We must start taking care of our spines as children and build bone with weight-bearing exercise to avoid shrinkage in our later years. For those who did not take these steps when they were young, it is not too late. Start getting regular chiropractic care now; do weight-bearing exercises; consume adequate calcium, vitamin D and other bone-healthy nutrients; do not drink alcohol to excess; and above all, do not smoke. A Belgian study published in Gerontology found that people who did moderate aerobic exercise throughout their lives shrank less than those who were sedentary all their lives or who stopped exercising after age 40. Remember, while losing height with age may be common, it is not inevitable. In fact, people who get regular chiropractic help frequently report height gain. Digital Receipts Gain Momentum Compared to newspapers, magazines and junk mail, retail sales receipts may seem inconsequential in their use of trees and their footprint on the environment. Yet, getting and handling that tabulation of a sale is a health hazard that contributes to landfills. Certainly, some receipts are required for tax records and product returns, but the vast majority serve no future purpose; there’s also a better and safer option than paper. Treehugger.com reports the annual waste from receipts in the U.S. totals 686 million pounds, and that skipping receipts would save 12 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of 1 million cars on the road. The problem is getting worse as many retail outlets include special offers and other promotional information on receipts, making them longer and the corresponding amount of paper used greater. The Ecology Center, an educational nonprofit located in San Juan Capistrano, California, estimates that 93 percent of paper receipts are coated with Bisphenol-A (BPA) or Bisphenol-S (BPS), endocrine disrupters that are used as color developers to help make the receipts more legible. However, the presence of either makes them ineligible for recycling. According to Green America (GreenAmerica.org), BPA that can be “absorbed into our bodies through our hands in mere seconds,” can impact fetal development and “is linked to reproductive impairment, Type 2 diabetes, thyroid conditions and other health concerns.” Employees that regularly handle receipts have 30 percent more BPA or BPS in their bodies. In January, California Assembly member Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) introduced legislation (AB 161) nicknamed “skip the slip”, which would require retailers to offer digital receipts to customers. If it passes, it will be the first such law in the country.

MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts Could Dry Needling Create Relief For You?
D
God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. ~Rudyard Kipling
ry needling is a specialized technique used by physical therapists to treat a variety of pain syndromes. Pain can be associated with trigger points found in the muscles and fascia, along a nerve distribution pattern called a dermatome or be due to fascial trauma or scarring. Dry needling can be performed just through the skin (superficial dry needling), or go deep into the muscle and fascia and sometimes to the boney surface (deep dry needling). It is called dry needling because nothing is being injected into the trigger points or tissue. In fact, solid acupuncture needles are used to perform the treatment. Physical therapists take additional training in this technique and need to be certified according to the state requirements. This is not acupuncture, as we do not palpate and treat the chi of the system. When a patient with chronic or acute pain is not responding to traditional therapy techniques, dry needling can offer an almost immediate change. Once trigger points or severe muscle tension are identified, a sterile acupuncture needle is placed through the skin and deep into the myofascial tissues. This causes three things: a reduction in muscle tension, a reduction in pain and a chemical change that draws nutrients to the area to heal, repair and restore. All of this results in improved muscle recruitment and creates a pain-free ease of movement. Dry needling can be helpful to stimulate muscles that aren’t turning on appropriately, such as after an injury. It is also effective when performed along the spine to treat pain that lies further out in the body, but may not be appropriate to needle due to recent surgery. For example, after a total knee replacement, needles can be placed along the spine to reduce pain around the knee. Sometimes, even the opposite side of the body can be needled and cause relief of symptoms on the primary side. Dry needling can be very effective to reduce tension and trigger points around the neck and shoulders, pelvis and low back, migraines, shoulder pain, tennis elbow and more. For those who have chronic or acute pain but haven’t found relief for any length of time, dry needling may be a solution. Jean Read, Physical Therapist, would be happy to work with clients to see if dry needling may be an appropriate option for their symptoms. Connect at 956-566-5443 or Liveyurpassion@gmail.com. This exchange can often help pets understand they are safe and loved at times of stress, as well as celebrate happy events. This area of focus also provides peace of mind for owners who might need assistance understanding a new behavior or change in their pet. Benefits of Self-Nourishment
Many psychologists agree that self-care can help to improve concentration, promote relaxation, fortify relationships and boost productivity. Most women crave more metime, but don’t know how to implement change. “Without a premise of self-care, we react based on stress patterns. We react with more tension, irritability, guilt and obligation. We say, ‘Yes’ when we want to say, ‘No’. However, when we take stock in our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, we’re less reactive,” observes Hassler, who underscores self-care as an investment for life. “Most women have inner critics and a negative relationship with self.

and happiness. We’re getting to a place as a collective where we see a bankruptcy in that,” says Miami-based holistic women’s psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan, bestselling author of A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives. Body-mind-spirit self-care is the heart of Brogan’s approach, and self-love is the lifeblood. “Self-love is quite elusive for most of us, perhaps because our selfesteem is contingent [upon it], and we only feel good about ourselves under certain circumstances. The daily choice to prioritize caring for oneself can ultimately lead to an experience of self-love and wholeness,” says Brogan, who compares a ritualized system of daily self-care that comes first to putting on the proverbial oxygen mask before attempting to meet the needs of others. “Balancing self-love and caring for others starts with recognizing and accepting that it’s possible for you to effectively do both. Self-love at the soul level is the catalyst for healing on all levels, which in turn drives our level of self-worth,” concurs Teigan Draig, a spiritual life coach and busy home-schooling mom in Spencerville, Ohio. She reminds us that putting our needs above the wants of others is not being selfish, but is an emotional necessity that helps women get out of the loop of self-defeatism and self-sabotage. “The first step to finding your fire is learning to love yourself, all of yourself. Self-care and selflove are a total wellness package.”
Self-care is essential so we can turn down the volume of the inner critic, stop peoplepleasing and make self-honoring choices.” Balancing motherhood and career or other obligations can leave many women running on empty and resentful. “We would never tell a loved one who desperately needed some TLC to get over it and just keep going. As busy women, when we don’t take the time to care for ourselves, the consequence is our children getting a mom who is preoccupied, anxious and disconnected,” says women’s life coach Veronica Paris, in San Diego. Catering to everyone’s desires and spreading ourselves too thin can backfire. Paris asks, “How do I want my kids to look back on me as a mother? By taking the time to self-care, we’re taking accountability for how we want to show up in our world rather than shape-shifting from one situation to the next. We can teach our children how to do the same.”
Our Emotions As Wellspring
For too many women, another common byproduct of self-neglect can be emotional numbing and feeling “flatlined”. A toxic or addictive relationship to food, alcohol or shopping can be a symptom of a deep need to nourish the self and give a voice to suppressed feelings. “One of our greatest challenges is that we’ve become disconnected from our deep seat of power, which is our capacity to feel,” says Brogan. “We’ve been
enculturated to disregard our experience of feeling emotions, and because of this, it’s been reduced to a very narrow bandwidth.” Brogan believes that it is key for women to reestablish a connection to nature’s rhythms and their own feminine, fluid energy, as well as giving up the need to control. “I think it’s the work of many women to understand that we’re not here to meet the needs of everyone on the planet—and with our loved ones, it disempowers them as much as we’re feeling disempowered. We’re here to meet our own needs and then offer compassion and caring in a way that comes from a more boundaried space.” Hassler affirms that when women are fully present, every aspect of life can be viewed through a clearer lens. “Self-care helps us tap into our super power, which is our intuition, and by doing that, we know what we need and act on that.”
Thrive With Small Changes
Beginning the day with self-care can be as simple as taking the time to meditate and breathe deeply for a minute or two before getting out of bed and opting for a healthier breakfast. Feeding our senses and feasting on what gives us joy can be a way of life. “Self-care does not necessarily have to involve time; it’s a way of being,” says Hassler. “The more time we spend on self-care tells the subconscious mind that we’re worth it.” Draig suggests setting personal
boundaries, and part of this means reserving time for ourselves. “When I became a new mother, I was running on fumes. Sometimes my daily me-time was only five minutes here or 10 minutes there, but it saved my sanity. Learn to schedule selfcare time in your calendar as you would anything else,” she says, noting, “My house was not always spotless, but it was a trade I was willing to make so I could take care of myself and be a better mother.” Being innovative can be an ally. “Ten minutes walking the dog or taking the baby out in a stroller can become 10 minutes spent saying positive self-affirmations,” suggests Paris. “That 15-minute drive can be spent deep breathing instead of listening to the news on the radio.” Blooming into our best possible self is returning to our essence. “It’s about taking off the masks, no longer living according to expectations and other people. It’s about radical self-acceptance,” says Hassler. Each decade poses an invitation to grow and commit to self-nourishment. “There will be days where you feel like you can’t get the hang of it, but you’ll arrive, and when you do, no matter what age you are, it can be magical,” Draig says. GAYLE FELBAIN/MASTERY IN MOTION Certified teacher of Alexander Technique, Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator What is your modality? Body alignment, Mindfulness in Motion, Mindfulness Meditation How is this modality useful for self-care? I teach how to develop conscious awareness of your body alignment and its associated
perceptions, along with learning to develop mindfulness in daily living. If we learn to become consciously aware of what it is we are doing, thinking and perceiving, at any given moment within ourselves, we can begin to retrain habitual patterns of movement, thought and behavior that no longer serve us and may be causing us harm. Until we know what we are doing within ourselves, we will not know how and what to change. Learning to listen, deeply, to our bodies and mind can give us great insight into what may need to change and how to go about doing it. It empowers us to become the masters of our health and well-being. How do you recommend readers begin using this modality? Every moment is an opportunity to be aware and mindful. It isn’t that you have to take time out of your life. It is about learning to integrate into everything you do. All it takes is a moment to pause, bringing your awareness to your body, feeling your feet on the ground. Continue to bring your awareness and attention to your body. Suspend judgment. Just observe your body. Now begin to notice your breath, breathing in and breathing out. Don’t force anything; just allow the breath to be gentle and easy. Think of it filling more and more of the space inside your body. Gently allow it to permeate any areas in your body that feel tight or stuck. Then gently bring your
awareness back to your surroundings and keep doing whatever activity you are involved in. Attempt to do this several times during your daily routines.

Why do you think self-care is so important? We have this life and this body/mind to work with. If we take care of it, we can experience greater ease, comfort and freedom within ourselves and in our lives. As we do so, we can have a greater impact on helping others in our life and the world at large.
How is this modality useful for self-care? I spend time educating my clients so that they can understand their critical role in preventing and treating their skin issues and concerns, empowering them to have beautiful skin for life.

TULA WELLNESS AND AESTHETICS Arianna Sholes-Douglas, MD, FACOG What is your modality? Hot baths How is this modality useful for self-care? It may seem strange, but the ritual of warm bathing is the most consistent habit of self-care I exercise. Just drawing up the bath water has the power to bring me to the present moment and be grateful for the moment I’m about to spend being still. Warm baths are scientifically proven to offer a number of health benefits, including but not limited
to: lowering blood pressure, improving sleep, relieving muscle tension and even burning calories. Warm water offers the medicinal effect of dilating blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure, increasing serotonin levels and relaxing tense muscle. The increase in body temperature increases metabolism a well. How do you recommend readers begin using this modality? You should begin by just beginning. Decide if it suits you better to make this a morning versus evening ritual. Remember that it can take less time to bathe than it takes to shower. While you draw the water, take this time to check in with yourself and be grateful for this moment. Location: 2404 E. River Rd., Tucson. Connect at 520-577-1129 or TulaWellnessMD.com. See ad, page 2.

WATSU AND WELLNESS Jean Read, PT What is your modality? I offer restorative therapies like craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, lymphatic drainage, hot stone myofascial release, watsu, Pain Neutralizing Technique, Total Motion Release, dry needling and private physical therapy. We work together to meet your objectives for wellness. How is this modality useful for self-care? All of the above mentioned treatment techniques help alleviate tension, stress and pain within the body and improve normal movement patterns without stress. Some treatments are performed to create a deep state of relaxation, which turns off the fight-or-flight responses within the body. How do you recommend readers begin using this modality? Depending on one’s stress, pain or levels of dysfunction, just start with one treatment to see if it is helpful to your system. If you find the treatment achieves your goals, you may want to schedule future treatments based on your lifestyle, work or stressful activities to keep your body in a more relaxed state of being. Why do you think self-care is so important? We all wear so many hats today, between work and home, and our stress levels are higher now than ever before. Stress can cause such dysfunction within our bodies, even if we are eating well and trying to exercise. Do something helpful for your body and take time to give it some relief and support on a monthly basis, when possible. If you can’t afford a treatment, schedule some time for a hot bath, meditation, a walk in nature, sipping a warm cup of tea and conversing with a friend. Choosing to Believe
An Interview with Brittany Turpin by Suzie Agrillo
B
rittany Turpin is a healer, a striking beauty and a bright light. Her book, My Life of Miracles: 31 True Stories To Help You Anchor Your Hope and Trust In God, is a book about faith—how to find it, sustain it, share it and build it into your life. The book posits the doctrine that when we are a person of faith, when we embrace it and practice it openly and without fear, unbelievable things can happen for us. While some people prefer to call these events “coincidences” or “luck”, Turpin chooses to call them miracles. These miracles have no ostensible reason to occur, however they happen as an answer to our prayers and as a result of our true belief. Turpin has lived through some adversity, and yet she exudes an indomitable spirit. Her book is a gift she wrote to help others overcome challenges in their lives. Turpin’s insight and infinite wisdom, which has been born out of her own life’s journey, will help guide readers to a powerful, meaningful, spiritual adventure.
What inspired you to write the book?
My inspiration was more of a prod. I’m not a professional writer and I never aspired to write a book. I believe God asked me to write this book. I knew, as sure as I breathed, that this is what I was supposed to do. A few years went by before I felt ready to start writing. My aversion was to actually reliving the experiences while I was writing the book.
How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book about yourself?
That’s why it took five years; I had a hard time reliving the experiences. Each chapter is short, so I had to leave out some of the
Would You Like to Be Here?
emotions I was feeling. The hardest chapter, about my mother, was extremely emotionally difficult. Sometimes I could only write about the funny stuff.
Have you heard from any of your readers?
I have people contacting me daily. I wrote the book so that, while you’re reading it, you stop thinking about my life and start thinking about yours. Readers tell me about how the stories helped them. Most of it is about the importance of forgiveness, and how my book helped them find the road to forgiveness.
Will there be a sequel?
Yes, I’m already working on the second book with more stories. I’m also working on a book about the five things you absolutely must teach your children. The first thing is how to forgive themselves. I think it’s the healthiest thing you can teach your child.
Do you have any unique writing habits?
Being a writer is being on purpose. It’s being disciplined. I insist on smiling the entire time I’m writing, because I know if I don’t, it will resonate through in the writing.
Any advice to your younger self?
Write the book earlier—but I have to believe that the book came out when it was supposed to come out. And to do things that I know I’m supposed to do.
What do you hope your readers take away from your book?
It’s a pathway to forgiveness. Unforgiveness is like having weeds in your garden. It sucks the nutrition out of your vegetables. It sucks the energy out of you, even if you don’t think it is. Not forgiving is actually physically harmful. Also, know that you’re never alone; never doubt that God is with you always. I’d like to thank God for His willingness to allow me to suffer—because in the end, God’s plan always worked out for the good. Chinese Medicine as a Treatment for Anxiety by Nathan Anderson
E
very spiritual teacher encourages us to “be present” and to “live in the moment.” This is sage advice, as now is the only moment any of us is alive. We aren’t living in the future, we aren’t alive in the past—we are alive at this very moment. As a friend and psychoanalyst so eloquently stated, “Anxiety is fears from our past, projected into the future, haunting us now.” Anxiety truly interferes with our ability to fully thrive and be present in the moment of now. Anxiety is an extension of fear, and everyone experiences these to some degree. A little bit of fear can even be healthy; it keeps us alive by avoiding dangerous situations and can be a powerful motivator to take action. But when anxiety and fear begin to interfere with our lives, they become pathological. When worry, uneasiness and apprehension interfere with sleep, paralyze productivity, erode social interaction and undermine our health, a clinician would make the diagnosis of anxiety disorder.

At this point (or ideally before things get this bad), we should seek help to manage anxiety. Anxiety can manifest as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, specific phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety is the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults, or nearly 20 percent of the population, annually. It is well-documented that women are more likely than men to develop an anxiety disorder in their lifespan. Anxiety is also closely associated with depression, and the two often present simultaneously. Persistent anxiety is also linked to using vices such as nicotine, alcohol and drugs as maladaptive coping devices, and these carry additional risks to health. There are a variety of strategies that effectively reduce anxiety. Interventions
ranging from prescription medications, psychotherapy, botanical supplements, meditation, yoga, tai chi, exercise and nutrition can all help to quiet the mental apprehension of anxiety. Chinese medicine also offers treatments for anxiety—an effective combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine. A recent article published in the medical journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice reviewed numerous research studies investigating acupuncture for anxiety, and concluded there is “scientific evidence encouraging acupuncture therapy to treat anxiety disorders as it yields effective outcomes, with fewer side effects than conventional treatment”. Furthermore, they found acupuncture enhanced the effectiveness of prescription anxiety medications and mitigated their side-effects. Anxiety produces specific physiological changes in the body. In addition to the apprehensive thoughts, one might experience elevated heart rate, a spike in blood pressure, palpitations, insomnia, headaches, spontaneous sweating, digestive problems, musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, dizziness, tremors, hyperventilation and shortness of breath. In its most extreme form, the symptoms of a panic attack can resemble a heart attack. In fact, according to a 2016 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association, only 5.5 percent of emergency room visits for chest pain are “life threatening.” The other 94.5 percent are primarily due to panic attacks and muscle strain. In Chinese medicine, there are dozens of syndromes that can generate symptoms of anxiety. A skilled acupuncturist will look at numerous signs and symptoms from all physiological systems in the body, examine nuances of thought patterns and mood and recognize a pattern of disharmony that is causing the anxiety. Appropriate acupuncture and herbal protocols are chosen to correct this pattern, relieving both the psychological and physical symptoms, bringing balance to the mind and the body.
An overactive sympathetic nervous system, the sustained “fight or flight” response, is associated with chronic anxiety. Most of the physical symptoms of anxiety are associated with an elevated sympathetic nervous state. Numerous studies have shown acupuncture can correct this by inducing the parasympathetic nervous state: “rest and digest”. The parasympathetic state allows the body and mind to relax and heal. Acupuncture and herbs are often sufficient to treat mild cases of anxiety. However, for severe cases, a multifaceted approach may be recommended which also includes psychotherapy, meditation, exercise and changes to lifestyle habits—whatever seems to be the best blend and fit for the individual. One interesting success story is a teenager who was suffering from anxiety, insomnia and fatigue. He would often have to stay home from school when the panic became severe. After just the first session, he was sleeping soundly, his energy was improved and his anxiety was less severe. After his second (and final) session, he has not had to skip school due to his anxiety and he has remained stable. He now only takes an herbal remedy recommended on the first visit. While most cases do not respond this quickly, it’s a good example of how an accurate diagnosis and intervention with Chinese medicine can have profound effects for those dealing with anxiety. Nathan Anderson, L.Ac. is a clinician at Catalina Acupuncture and a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. He has been a professor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine for over 10 years. Connect at 520-999-0080, Nathan@CatalinaAcupunctureTucson.com or CatalinaAcupunctureTucson.com. See ad, page 19.

Myths and Menopause
A
by Arianna Sholes-Douglas
s the population ages, lifespans are longer, so the average woman spends one third of her life after menopause. But how comfortable or prepared do women feel entering peri/menopause? Much of what we think we know about menopause is a myth. Perhaps the most prevalent myth is that menopausal symptoms are strictly physical. The fact is, our hormones also go on a journey, which leads to symptoms that aren’t physical. When these occur, many women at midlife start to doubt their own sanity and stability. Recognizing the signs early can mean the difference between years of suffering and confusion versus years of living and understanding. How did the menopause myths begin? The reasons are too many to count, but let’s start with the obvious and blame our mother. In interviewing patients about how and where they receive their information about menopause, they rarely mention their mothers. The same mothers who made our period cake, doted over our first pregnancy or helped us manage the first few days of motherhood, have remained silent on the issue of menopause. Why? Because mothers, like most teachers, are incapable of imparting knowledge that they don’t have. Furthermore, if our friends are unaware about their own bodies and journeys through menopause, they can’t offer us any advice either. In fact, many circles of friends are all feeling the same things, with no clear teacher in sight. It gets worse. Not only are our mother and friends mostly unprepared to help us navigate this period, but our doctor may be just as unprepared. The ignorance surrounding this phase of life is astounding when we consider that on average, it lasts a decade and has life-changing impacts on quality of life, relationships and work. Women are blindly struggling with no viable solutions offered by their medical providers. Those who have found a provider who takes the time to educate and do more than simply prescribe a hormone or antidepressant are fortunate. 24
Tucson Edition
NaturalTucson.com
Although there are many healthcare providers in front of the curve helping patients manage this period, there are just as many, if not more, who do not possess the tools to help and who infuse their own misperceptions into their guidance. In addition, there is no consensus on the role of hormone replacement in women. Just within the past two decades, the pendulum has swung from offering hormones like candy, to withholding hormones from desperate women entering menopause. There is a menopause analogy of the grape versus the raisin. Estrogen is a hormone that keeps everything juicy. As we age and estrogen levels fall, that juicy grape looks and feels more like a raisin. Most women over 35 have experienced symptoms of menopause, like vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and decreased libido. Oftentimes, women don’t correlate those symptoms with being perimenopausal. But perimenopause can predate actual menopause by eight to 10 years.
Several menopause myths that need to be busted:
• Women are too young to be perimenopausal in their 40s. Menopause symptoms start in our 50s. • Menopause is when some or most parts of us shrivel up and die. • Menopause is the beginning of the end. • Decreasing estrogen is the main menopause culprit.
And now, a reality check:
• Perimenopause typically starts in late 30s/early 40s. In terms of symptoms, there are no significant differences between perimenopause and menopause. • One of the major myths of menopause is that it only relates to the menstrual cycle, or the end of it. In actuality, menopause is the beginning of our journey to become who we are meant to be. • Menopause allows us the opportunity to reinvent and recreate ourselves, so that we walk into the second half of life stronger and more authentic. • Menopause is defined as 12 months without menstruating. Using this definition, menopause is actually just one year. • We can be in our reproductive years and perimenopausal at the same time. Women don’t have to go through this period unassisted. There are wonderful treatments and new technology that can make this transition close to seamless. Start the conversation, get information and get empowered to walk into the best half of life. Ariana Sholes-Douglas, MD, FACOG practices at Tula Wellness & Aesthetics, in Tucson. Tame Your Hormones by Lydie Vagnerova

any people accredit yoga to helping them find new balance in life, with its routine calm and mindful exercises bringing a flexibility and strength its users can feel both physically and mentally. Practiced for thousands of years, yoga is an ever changing and growing phenomenon which has recently seen the rise of several specialized practices, such as Hormonal Yoga. Its creator, Dinah Rodrigues, is an incredible 92-year-old Brazilian yoga legend who has traveled the world several times over to research and work alongside doctors and specialists to perfect and bring her techniques to people in need. The name of the practice speaks for itself, with Hormone Yoga exercises working with the natural rhythms of the body to create proper flow of energy, breath and hormones to alleviate a laundry list of hormone related ailments. These include balancing hormones during menopause and menstruation cycles to alleviate issues such as PMS, irregular cycles and ovarian cysts. Many experts agree that this practice is not just about hormones. It’s also not just about learning a few moves, but about an integrated lifestyle which brings an incredible amount of benefits. Along with all the hormonal benefits, many people report improved mood, energy and general health, as well as alleviation of more specific issues such as painful menstruation, hair loss, acne, osteoporosis, insomnia, anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome and hypothyroidism. On top of this, Hormone Yoga assists the body with natural healing and repairing of organs by improving blood flow, digestion and the immune system for an overall improvement of health—leading to an improvement of personal well-being. This means that hormone yoga is not exclusive to helping women with hormonal issues. Both women and men can benefit from Hormonal Yoga, with many sufferers of diabetes or specific hormonal issues finding it to be especially effective. Of course, it is important to be mindful and understand that as with all lifestyle changes, Hormone Yoga is not a quick fix, and will bring results only with proper patient practice. The ideal is to practice 3 to 4 times a week, with sessions consisting of a series of simple dynamic exercises which will work with strong abdominal breathing, Tibetan energy circulation and relaxation to create stimulation in the ovaries, thyroid and pituitary glands. Lydie Vagnerova is a certified teacher of Hormone Yoga by Dinah Rodrigues—among only a few teachers in the U.S. certified to teach this practice. Vagnerova suffered with hypothyroidism for 27 years and was on a high dose of hormones. After 10 months of practicing hormone yoga, she has been off medication for over two years.. create tension in the form of “armoring” to defend against unwanted feelings. “Trauma is a physiological experience. Body tension that results from unresolved trauma will not respond to only releasing muscle tension,” explains Lissa Wheeler, author of Engaging Resilience: Heal the Physical Impact of Emotional Trauma: A Guide for Bodywork Practitioners. Wheeler’s Medford, Massachusetts, practice focuses on releasing emotional patterns locked in tissue memory. “When the nervous system is frozen in a state of threat long after the actual threat is gone, all of the body’s activities of healthy regulation are challenged. This affects not only skeletal muscles, but also smooth muscle such as what’s found in the gastrointestinal tract. Sleep problems and teeth grinding can also result.”
Cellular Memory and CranioSacral Therapy
Swedish massage, Thai massage and shiatsu are all ideal treatments for chronic pain, grief and emotional imprints locked within the body’s cellular consciousness. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) offers a gentler alternative. “CranioSacral Therapy can unravel cellular stories and assist in freeing repressed or preverbal emotions from childhood,” says Seattle-based CST therapist Barbara Coon. “Experiences are held in the body. Stress and muscular tension activate the vagus nerve, and CST focuses on calming [it].” The vagus nerve facilitates communication between the brain and the heart, lungs and gut. Coon attests to the modality’s body-centered support for reducing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, memory loss, sleep disturbances and grief. “Some people respond well to deep tissue work, while others do better with the gentleness of CranioSacral Therapy,” says Wheeler. “Like a perfect dance partner, a skilled bodywork practitioner follows the nervous system and helps the client access sources of trauma.”

Healing Frequencies
Clinical aromatherapy and therapeutic sound can also play a vital role in emotional healing, especially when combined with bodywork. Kelli Passeri, a massage therapist and owner of Sound and Stone Massage, in Pittsburg, Kansas, utilizes a subwoofer speaker beneath her massage table so clients can feel the vibrations of the music. “I play music recorded in specific frequencies that align with the body and the chakras or energy centers to help rebalance the energy body,” says Passeri, who also uses rose quartz crystals in her hot stone sessions. She relies on aromatherapy blends that promote opening on both physical and emotional levels.

When Your Teenager Has Made a Serious Mistake 7 Key Ways to Be an Enlightened Parent
W
by Bill White
e all make mistakes, and at some point or another, our children are going to make many of their own. When they make a serious mistake—perhaps abusing drugs or alcohol, having sex way too early, seriously bullying others, lying and stealing, attempting suicide or taking risks with their body—we may find ourselves in shock, fear and anger. How can we deal with the situation in an enlightened way?
1 2
Bring compassion.
Who hasn’t made some very serious blunders or dangerous mistakes? We probably made some as a kid. Life happens. It’s all trial and error.
Continue to love the child. Take out the anger and judgment.
We are naturally going to feel shock, helplessness and fear for the child or ourselves. Unfortunately, we make the mistake of turning our fear into anger and judgment toward our child. We feel we need to punish our child and show our displeasure. In effect, we’re threatening our child with withhold-

ing our love as a way to manipulate them. To help remedy the situation, give them love and support in this difficult time. Expressing anger and judgment is a big mistake. Also understand that many unacceptable behaviors are based in emotional pain that the person is attempting to avoid feeling. A child doesn’t need judgment in these situations. They need help with their emotional world.
3
Listen.
Once we are not in an angry or judgmental place toward our teen, we must suspend our parental mode of talking to and giving advice and directives. Start with listening. Listen to understand. Listen with compassion. Give them time to express what’s happening in their inner world. This step is crucial and is usually absent. Most people will benefit from utilizing a good counselor-type to facilitate good communication.
4
Employ “natural consequences”.
What can we do instead of expressing anger and rejection? How does the child get
the message that their actions are not okay? Answer: Employ natural consequence for the actions without adding anger and dislike. If our actions require going to the police, taking away privileges and freedoms, then employ them matter-of-factly in a calm tone. This is not punishment. Tell the child, “You’ve made a mistake. I will love you no matter what you do. What can we do to help? What consequences do you think would be appropriate for your actions?” Take away privileges and freedoms with the message that they can earn them back.
5
Get family counseling, versus sending just the child to counseling.
We don’t want to make the child the “identified problem” in the family, as this only adds to the child’s lowered self-worth. Instead, take an attitude of “we’re in this together.” It is useful to think of our child’s actions as a possible reflection of family dynamics. Often these dynamics are unseen. Counseling can bring to light underlying relating styles or attitudes that are not empowering, nor are they nurturing to the family. On another note, there is the need for the teen to have private sessions with a therapist that they feel good with. Some things can’t easily be said with the parent there.
6
Set a standard for relating with kindness and respect.
especially when we are upset. Unkindness does not produce good results, ever. Make a commitment to be kind and respectful at all times—to everyone. When we have established this standard of kindness and respect, whenever the child gets off base, we can simply ask them, “Are you being kind or respectful right now?” If the child has done something unkind, remind them that kindness is a value that is important and that works to make their life feel good.
7
Ask Spirit for help and guidance.
If spirituality is a part of our lives, we can admit we are powerless over a situation and turn to Spirit for help. This life trial we’re in may deepen our relationship with the spiritual world. Consider that maybe there’s a divine plan for even the difficult experiences. Remember during this trying time, there are gifts that come out of all life challenges. Maybe the gift is learning how to love one another better. Maybe it’s about learning to communicate on an emotional level. Maybe the experience the child is having is part of a career path that he or she will take. Who knows what gifts may come? Be open to these gifts presenting themselves.
We tend to think we are all about kindness and respect, but often we give ourselves permission to be unkind or disrespectful—

RUNNING TOWARD MINDFULNESS
What can non-runners take away from your book?
by Randy Kambic
T
he 5 million faithful listeners of National Public Radio’s award-winning weekly broadcast Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! know that 20-year host Peter Sagal infuses wit and wisdom into his views of the news and the world. In his new book, The Incomplete Book of Running, he brings his trademark humor to a memoir that posits running as a mode of survival—and hope, persistence, practice and love as vehicles of redemption. Sagal’s collection of deeply personal lessons encompasses the emotional spectrum of running, body image and the special bonding between fellow runners. His exhilarating guide to life suggests we keep moving forward in all ways. He also reflects upon the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he finished moments before two bombs exploded, and explores how running helped him cope with a devastating divorce, depression and more. Sagal is also a playwright, screenwriter and the host of PBS’ Constitution USA with Peter Sagal when he’s not writing about the recreation he took up in mid-life where he found himself “lost, in a dark place” after a personal crisis. He lives near Chicago with his wife, Mara.

After becoming a serious runner at nearly 40, when did you realize running had evolved into something more than a simple mission to get healthy?
I was concerned about my weight, but mainly I was also concerned about getting older. I ran my first marathon in 2005 as an emotional reaction to growing older, and that’s when it all began to change for me. It struck me in a deep way as something I wanted to do better. I’ve rarely experienced the classic “runner’s high”—that endorphin-caused euphoria—although I do believe it exists. Rather, what’s more common is the sense that everything—body, mind—is working in concert, without discomfort, with strength, with ease. To paraphrase a line from Kurt Vonnegut, it’s when “everything is beautiful, and nothing hurts.”
As an advocate of escaping our “digital dystopia” of electronic screens by running outdoors, what’s the benefit you see in unplugging?
I’m a big fan of evolutionary biology. We evolved in very different circumstances than what we are living in now; to be at-

tentive to the world and not with a screen in front of us. The reason we are up on two legs is so that we can look around and think. We’re supposed to ruminate. We didn’t evolve these extraordinary brains and self-consciousness so we could outsource our thinking. Anybody who has done creative work knows what’s needed to do that is uninterrupted thought.
Go outside. We weren’t meant to spend so much time in offices. Take the headphones off, move, use your body. Look at little kids in playgrounds—they’re just running around before getting trained into games. We forget that. We spend so much time in our heads reading, watching screens. I’ve met people who say they don’t run, but they walk, ride bikes, hike in the woods. Those people are getting many of the same benefits as running.
I’ve met people who say they don’t run, but they walk, ride bikes, hike in the woods. Those people are getting many of the same benefits as running. Of the many anecdotes you cite about bonding with others through running, which one was the most gratifying? Probably when I ran with William Greer, who I didn’t even know 24 hours before we ran the 2013 Boston Marathon, and by the end of that day we were friends forever because of all we went through together. [Greer is visually impaired and Sagal was his volunteer guide during the race.] We’re still in touch; we sometimes run together. He wouldn’t have finished if I wasn’t helping him and I wouldn’t have finished if he wasn’t helping me. Randy Kambic is a freelance writer and editor, in Estero, Florida.

ur sport seems mindless only to people who never run long enough for any thought to form other than, ‘When can I stop running?’ But the only way to succeed as a long-distance runner is to do it mindfully, to be aware of the body and the world it is moving through. I think about my motion and my breathing, my muscles and their state of agitation or stress or relaxation. I note my surroundings—the downward slope I would never notice driving this street, the hawk’s nest I would never see for lack of looking up, the figure in a window caught in a solitary moment of their own. I think about the true meaning of distance—about the learning that comes from running a mile in your own shoes. From The Incomplete Book of Running, by Peter Sagal.
EVERYDAY MINDFULNESS
M
by Gayle Felbain
indfulness is the ability to be fully present—aware of where we are and what we are doing, in whatever activity or task we are involved. We take ourselves into whatever we do and wherever we go, so every moment becomes an opportunity to be mindful. Whenever we bring awareness to what we are directly experiencing via our body and senses, or to our state of mind through our thoughts and emotions, we are being mindful. More and more research on this phenomenon shows that when we train our brain to be mindful, we are actually changing how our brain works. Mindfulness is a quality of relaxed alertness. It is important to learn to suspend judgment and self-criticism for purer awareness to prevail. Although we all have this innate ability, it often takes learning certain skills and practices to increase our ability to be mindful and get out of our own way. As we learn to quiet the mind and the body, to allow spaciousness and ease within us, we can begin to explore and understand the patterns that often drive us, in a much deeper, non-judgmental way. We can begin to let go and grow less attached to the myriad of distractions around us and within us, leading to a deeper understanding of ourselves, a reduction in stress and the ability to cultivate a more balanced approach to living. TOXIC LEGACY
Breast Implant Warriors Unite by Linda Sechrist
T
he U.S. Surgeon General’s warning on cigarettes hasn’t prevented individuals from smoking, nor has the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) list of risks and complications associated with breast implants kept women from undergoing voluntary breast augmentation. Since 1997, the number of saline- and silicone-filled breast implant surgeries has tripled. According to the National Center for Health Research (NCHR), more than 400,000 women and teenagers undergo breast implant surgeries every year, with 75 percent for augmentation of healthy breasts and 25 percent for reconstruction after mastectomies. The marked increase in surgeries implanting these Class III “high risk” medical devices includes many women that undergo procedures to replace old implants that have broken or caused other problems. An estimated 40,000 U.S. women a year have the surgery to remove the implants entirely. These “explants” stem from a variety of issues, from rupture or delayed wound healing to broken implants that have caused breast pain, capsule contracture, spontaneous deflation, breast lesion, infection, wrinkling/ scalloping and necrosis. Another reason for removal is the growing concern about the reported incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a treatable T-cell lymphoma, and breast implant illness (BII) associated with both 32

silicone and saline implants. The FDA first sounded the alarm about the rare lymphoma in 2011, linking it to implants with textured, Velcro-like outer shells. In February, the federal agency issued a letter to healthcare providers seeking to increase awareness “about an association between all breast implants, regardless of filling or texture,” and BIAALCL. On the issue of BII and other problems reported by women with implants, the FDA has remained largely silent, suggesting that “studies would need to be larger and longer than these conducted so far.” However, the number of women with implants reporting health problems has prompted the FDA to demand that two manufacturers of the devices conduct proper long-term health studies. The agency sent out letters in March warning of deficiencies in FDA-required research and the possibility that their products could be taken off the market. The move is considered to be a victory for patient activism. Facebook.com/groups/ HealingBreastImplantIllness has become a sanctuary for more than 68,000 women that report a range of symptoms associated with BII. Nicole Daruda, of Vancouver Island, Canada, says she created the group to support women that visited her website, HealingBreastImplantIllness.com, where she told her personal BII story that began with implant surgery in 2005. “I never anticipated an avalanche of women’s stories about
NaturalTucson.com
the symptoms that I endured before having my explant surgery in 2015.” After hearing from other women, Daruda felt affirmed in her suspicions that implants had caused her fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, headaches, joint and muscle pain, hair loss, recurring infections, swollen lymph nodes, rashes, irritable bowel syndrome and problems with thyroid and adrenal glands. “I believe that various doctors pigeonholed my symptoms into the category of autoimmune disorders because few general practitioners are aware of BII.” Diana Hoppe, M.D., a board-certified OB/GYN in Encinitas, California, never heard of BII until earlier this year. “Doctors rely on published, evidence-based study results, and while there are none linking connective tissue disorders and breast implants, I suspect that the outcomes of studies conducted by breast implant manufacturers are equally as suspicious as the outcomes of studies done by the manufacturers of cigarettes.” One longtime BII combatant says, “My body mounted an all-out war, in the form of a foreign body immune response.” She learned about BII from Tinyurl.com/ BreastImplantIllness, but is unable to afford the explant surgery that would remove the apparently toxic invaders. NCHR reports that at the time of explant surgery, approximately three out of five women have had implants and their unhealthy symptoms for 10 years or more. After explant surgery, 89 percent of the women report improvement. However, explant surgery is just the first step. Daruda used chelation and the protocols of Gerson Therapy, a natural treatment that activates the body’s ability to heal itself through an organic, plant-based diet, raw juices, coffee enemas and supplements. “It took me four years to recuperate,” she says. “It didn’t take that long to know the lesson I wanted to share with other women: Selflove and self-worth are more important than society’s false concepts of beauty. The essence of who we are is not tied to any body part.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Connect at ItsAllAboutWe.com.

his Mother’s Day, I want to tell you about a different way to think about your mother and about yourself—a way that is deeply true and liberating, no matter what is going on with your mother. well they did or didn’t do that job, we have a job, too: to realize that though we might not have had the mother we wanted, we all got the mother our souls needed. What’s more, every single one of us can connect right now with the mother energy that made all of our bodies in the first place—the Earth herself. It has been said that when you lavish your attention on the Earth—on a flower, or a stream or any aspect of nature—that energy loves you right back. In the book series The Ringing Cedars, Anastasia refers to the land you live on and love as, “Love dissolved in space.” You can feel this when you travel to parks and gardens, farms and yards that have been loved by those who live there. This mothering energy is available to each of us from the Earth and from Mother Nature— no matter what has happened with your biological mother. So here is my prescription for a glorious Mother’s Day. Call your mother—in spirit, if she is no longer in a body—or if speaking with her directly is too painful. Here’s a special prayer: “With my Spirit, I send Divine Love to my mother’s Spirit.” That’s it. Just say this prayer. With your whole heart. And let go of the outcome. Happy Mother’s Day. FLOWER POWER by Jeffrey Green
T
he month of May is a time when most Americans have finished dusting off the last signs of winter. It’s also a month to celebrate new growth and spring flowers. Mother’s Day is celebrated this month on May 12, so don’t forget one of the most important people in life—perhaps with some flowers. With their bright colors and fragrant aromas, flowers are Mother Nature’s smile on humanity. Whether they’re wild flowers intricately woven in a meadow of beautiful patchwork, the product of weeks of careful nurturing or a single dandelion given by a child, flowers make people happy. Some people suffer from hay fever and allergies, but still find the beauty of the delicate petals and bright cheerful colors and shapes, accepting the sneezing, congestion and watery eyes they can cause. There are some who willingly suffer through allergy symptoms just so that a beautiful floral arrangement can decorate a table, or sit, sing or dance in the midst of a garden or field of wildflowers. the beauty of flowers, consequences or not. According to AboutFlowers.com, 33 percent of Americans will buy flowers or plants for their mother and women they admire this Mother’s Day. Flowers are a beautiful gift that says, “I love you”. They’re also colorful and bring cheer wherever they are displayed. Flowers can be worn as a corsage, tucked behind an ear or pressed into a book as a reminder of a special event. More uncommon uses for flowers are incorporating them into natural medicine. Chromotherapy, or color therapy, and aromatherapy are two ways that flowers can be useful in a healthy lifestyle. Also seen infused into delectable menu items in restaurants or topping a salad at home, flowers are much more than a simple garnish; some can be eaten as a form of medicine. Kate Smith, a color consultant in Lor ton, Virginia, believes that the colors used to enhance or decorate a room “can have profound effects on the emotional wellbeing”. popular and recognized as a wonderful aid in mental health. Psychologists have shown that color can affect mood, motivation, creativity and relaxation. The color red is good for stimulating the appetite and helping with ease of conversation, whereas blues, greens and purples can curb the appetite. Yellow, and its many hues, can activate the metabolism. Deep greens can bring about focus and concentration—the perfect color for an office space—whereas olive greens can bring about a tranquil and calming feeling. Colors can help with the way a space is perceived. Specific colored flowers can be used as an accessory in almost any room of a house. Splashes of color can have the same effect on mood as a painted room, so by putting certain colored floral arrangements in different areas of the home, mental health can be improved. Not only can the vibrant colors of flowers have a positive effect on the body, but the abounding fragrance and essence of flowers has an equally beneficial reaction. Aromatherapy and essential oils are soaring to new heights as research continues to show that certain scents are beneficial for a wide array of illness and disease. Floral scents can stimulate healing. Roses can help bring about a soothing and uplifting mood. They’re also good for relieving stress and anxiety and can also lessen the feelings associated with hormonal imbalance. Like roses, lavender is commonly used to promote a sense of balance and calm. It’s good for people who suffer from insomnia. It relieves tension, eases depression, calms the nerves and diminishes the symptoms of headaches and migraines. Jasmine has an intoxicating aroma. It’s been used as an aphrodisiac as well as an antidepressant. It can boost confidence and help trigger the metabolism. The lotus

flower and its sweet scent is good for easing anger and stimulating the appetite. Probably the most uncommon benefit of some flowers is consuming them, either raw, straight from the plant or cooked in a variety of ways. Guests wouldn’t be all that surprised sitting at a dining room table with a beautiful arrangement of flowers adorning it, but would be shocked if the hostess reached over and plucked a flower from the vase and declared, “Dig in.” Plants and trees can be medicine. It shouldn’t be that difficult to see that the flowers produced by plants and trees could also be used medicinally. Certainly, not all flowers are safe to eat, but those that are can have some wondrous medicinal value. As always, with any natural medicine or supplement, research is needed before consumption. Hibiscus flowers are often used for decorative purposes, or even made into a tea, but seldom seen being pulled from the plant and eaten. Researchers have shown that eating the roselle variety of hibiscus can aid in lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Although scientifically unproven, honeysuckle has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries for fighting inflammation. Nasturtium is often used as a garnish for many dishes, but are eaten for their savory, spicy taste. These colorful flowers are full of antioxidants which can help fight disease. The starflower, or borage, tastes sweet, like a combination of cucumber and honey, and has also been used in Chinese medicine to ease minor coughs and sore throats. The succulent, purslane, produces tiny yellow flowers which are full of essential vitamins and minerals, but are eaten more for their high levels of omega-3 fat. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, purslane provides more omega-3s than most any other vegetable of its kind. On this upcoming Mother’s Day, remember that the beautiful arrangement of flowers that are given can offer much more than the message “I love you”. The vibrant colors can aid mental health, the aromas can combat headaches and the taste can lower high blood pressure. VIOLETS, along with being an ancient and beautiful flower, can be eaten raw or can be cooked like spinach. They have a naturally sweet flavor, and can be candied for use in a number of confections. The dried leaves can be used to make tea. In the 1800s, the most common reference for them was as a thickener for soups. Native Americans had various medicinal uses for over 15 species of violets. The first inhabitants of the U.S. used violets as poultices for headaches and boils, as an infusion for dysentery, kidney problems, bladder issues, heart pain, colds and coughs. They are high in vitamins A and C. According to a confirmed research study in 1995, they are also beneficial for helping skin conditions such as eczema, hives and shingles. Violet roots, however, should be avoided, as they are known to be a natural insecticide. Native Americans soaked them with corn seeds as a pre-planting insecticide. Violets were first grown and cultivated in Greece around 400 BC, and were, in fact the first commercial flower product. Athens was known as the violet-crowned city, and the Romans grew more of them than olives because they liked violet flavored wine so much. There are over 800 species of the flower, which nutritionally have 15,000 to 20,000 IUs of vitamin A per 100 grams serving. As with any natural edible medicine, research and a little footwork should be done before consuming them.

BANANAS are typically known for their high levels of potassium, which is vital to a strong rhythmic heartbeat. Potassium is essential for peak muscle performance and helping reduce leg cramps that can wake even the soundest of sleepers. Other less known benefits of bananas are their ability to help with depression and control PMS symptoms by producing stressrelieving relaxation. They are also excellent for regulating blood sugar. By eating a banana between meals, the dips in blood sugar throughout the day are limited. Unregulated blood sugar can cause headaches, lethargy, brain fog, irritability, excessive thirst and heavy sweating. Don’t sweat the small stuff—eat a banana.
Medicinal Effects of CBD
C
BD, or Cannabidiol, is a natural anti-anxiety, anti-epileptic and anti-psychotic, and one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis. It lacks the main psychoactive compound, THC—the ingredient that makes one feel “high”—and is regarded as the main component responsible for cannabis medical benefits. The “high” generated from CBD is generally felt more in the body, whereas THC is felt more in the head. Many patients use CBD for its benefits in treating nausea, inflammation, insomnia and anxiety. CBD can also negate some of the anxiety and paranoia that THC in high doses can cause. Donovan Hutchins, a SAINTS Dispensary Budtender, is a big advocate of using CBD. “If you have pain issues, muscle spasms or sleep disorders, and you’re not looking to feel a psychoactive effect, CBD is the perfect medicine. For pain, CBD is my go-to medicine.” CBD is used as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including: PTSD, chronic pain, arthritis, depression, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and other neurological disorders. A “Grown by SAINTS” strain, Champa-Cheese, is a popular high CBD (1:1) strain that is much sought after by patients looking for pain and anxiety relief. Hutchins adds that he is “a big fan of a strain that we grow called Champa-Cheese. It’s a phenomenal strain. It really helps with muscle spasms and pain. It will help you address your pain and also allow you to go on about your day without feeling too medicated. It’s excellent for patients who don’t want the ‘high’ feeling that comes with THC strains,” he explains. “Our ultimate goal is to find a product which satisfies the medicating needs of each patient.” Products at SAINTS dispensary that are high in CBD include: Timeless Canary Cartridges, Uncle Herbs THC/CBD tinctures, Haze & Main CBD Chocolate bars, Sublime CBD fruit chews, Sweeties Candies and Venice Cookie Company CBD churros. To buy hemp-derived CBD products in Arizona, you do not need a medical marijuana card. SELECT CBD products, made from hemp oil, can be found in SAINTS dispensary. CBD products that have both THC and CBD require a current Arizona medical marijuana card to purchase. See ad, page 43.

Known for their strong flavor, RADISHES come in a variety of colors, including white, red, purple and black, and can grow either cylindrical or round in shape. Radishes are full of essential vitamins and minerals. Medicinally, their contributions to aid and ward off disease are impressive. Full of vitamin C, phosphorus and zinc, radishes can help alleviate dry, cracked skin and rashes. They are a natural body detoxifier and diuretic, helping to increase the production of urine and flush harmful toxins from the body. Because radishes are rich in anthocyanins, they help keep the heart healthy and increase circulation. For centuries, radishes have been known to treat jaundice because they rid the body of bilirubin. They can help bolster red blood cells and keep a supply of fresh oxygen flowing through the body, which is a concern for people with jaundice. Radishes are a filling food because they contain insoluble fiber, making them a great vegetable for dieters. 38

Natural Healing Care Center
Demystifying Medical Marijuana in Arizona by Michelle Bense
I
It seems everyone is talking about medical marijuana these days. Gaining momentum in Arizona by the day, it is becoming abundantly clear that this plant can be beneficial to so many suffering from pain and illness. David Yrigoyen, owner and consultant at Natural Healing Care Center (NHCC), is passionate about helping people learn more about how natural medicine—and cannabis in particular— can help change their lives. Since 2012, NHCC has been providing Tucson with its holistic wellness center

and access to countless resources for natural health care, preventive health care and education. “We’re a well-rounded wellness center that not only practices naturopathic and alternative medicine, but also cannabis. We use cannabis as an introduction to alternative medicine and holistic healing,” says Yrigoyen, a Tucson native. One of the main concentrations of the center is helping patients get Medical Marijuana certification cards. NHCC staff provide medical cannabis education and recommendations for patients, depending on their particular needs. “While we focus a lot of our time on medical cannabis, we incorporate other services as well,” says Yrigoyen. Often, he says, patients come in seeking assistance with medical cannabis, and end up learning about other services for wellness, coming back later to take advantage of massage therapy, acupuncture, holistic medicine, homeopathy and more. They’re paying more attention to the ways natural medicine can benefit all aspects of their health.
NaturalTucson.com
So, how does the medical cannabis certification process work? If a person has any of the 15 qualifying conditions according to the state of Arizona, they can be eligible for the Arizona Medical Marijuana Program. Some of those conditions include: chronic or severe pain, PTSD, severe nausea, seizures, ALS, Crohn’s disease, cancer and arthritis. Patients who have any of these conditions and are interested in medical marijuana as a means of natural medicine can visit NHCC for help through the next steps in the process. In order to obtain a Medical Marijuana card in Arizona, the patient needs to have medical records from within the last 12 months, showing that they have one or more of these qualifying conditions. NHCC helps with this process by obtaining that documentation from the patient’s existing provider, if needed, then evaluating the patient in person. If they qualify, the doctor at NHCC will fill out the State-provided certification form to send with the patient’s application. They’ll then submit all paperwork to the Arizona Department of Health Services for processing, and the State will issue the card.
After a patient receives their Medical Marijuana card in the mail, they are free to begin purchasing from dispensaries as they wish. However, NHCC goes one step further and invites patients back for a complimentary follow-up visit, where a Cannabis Specialist will make sure the patient has all necessary information regarding the purchase and uses of cannabis for medical concerns. “At Natural Healing Care Center, we are all about education and the patient. We feel like when you have the most information, you can utilize it anywhere in the world—with medical or legal cannabis,” says Yrigoyen.

NHCC is currently staffed by three naturopathic doctors, all of which see patients for cannabis consultations, education and recommendations, as well as providing other services and modalities. Dr. Jasmine May, NMD is a full practicing naturopathic physician who uses homeopathy as well as acupuncture, bodywork and hydrotherapy. Dr. Aiyana Brown, NMD focuses on herbal medicine and cannabis recommendations. Dr. Sonya Johnson, NMD focuses on cannabis education and using cannabis as alternative medicine. Johnson also has a practice in Phoenix, where she offers IV therapy, vitamin B12 injections and herbal medicine. Overwhelmingly, Yrigoyen says, NHCC sees women, more than men, coming in seeking the benefits of natural medicine. “I see a lot of women who are more conscious of their health than many men. They seem to be more consistent with medical appointments and they go seek out medical advice when something happens,” says Yrigoyen. “Men, like myself, unfortunately tend to seek medical advice once
they’re already suffering.” Yrigoyen knows firsthand, as he suffered from a back injury that left him barely able to walk in 2010— the catalyst for his foray into alternative care. The great news is that there are many cannabis products that can benefit more women-specific conditions. “We see a lot of women come in interested in cannabis for lower back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica, arthritis and menstrual pain. Topicals can be helpful for pain relief from cramps and aches, and some markets have cannabis-infused feminine hygiene products,” Yrigoyen says. “Additionally, mind-body medicine offered by Dr. May is beneficial for the overthinking mind, helping find clarity and peace and tools to go home and do self-meditation.” While anyone can call or go online to make an appointment with one of NHCC’s doctors, they also regularly offer classes and events to educate the public in a more casual setting. On May 11, and every Second Saturday for the month, they’re hosting a Cannabis Infusion class, where attendees will learn how to infuse their own oils or butters with cannabis. They also host a recurring session called “Is Cannabis For Me?” on the third Thursday of the month. At this free, open seating event, held on May 16, people can learn if cannabis may help them, schedule an appointment with a provider or simply get information to take home and research further. “We’re just here to help the community and help them understand there are alternatives in health care. By finding balance, incorporating science and natural medicine, you’ll find optimal relief. We should be able to use what we have to find the best solution,” enthuses Yrigoyen. “Cannabis is a big part of that.” Natural Healing Care Center is located at 2230 E. GOOD TO KNOW
Known as the Chinese turnip, yam bean, Mexican water chestnut or Mexican potato in other cultures, Americans know it as JICAMA. It’s native to Mexico and has a long growth cycle, and is not frost tolerant so is only grown in places with mild winters. It has thin, light brown skin and a hard juicy interior. It’s crunchy, mildly sweet and has a nutty taste. Jicama is the bulbous root of a green leafy plant which produces beans resembling lima beans. The beans are toxic, so remain focused on what grows underground. Jicama is packed full of necessary vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese and more. Jicama has been shown to help heart health and combat disease with its many antioxidants. It’s a prebiotic, which makes it a hero with digestive health and healthy gut bacteria. Jicama is a great source of fiber and water, making it a great choice to help with weight loss. Jicama can be cooked or eaten raw and can be included in many dishes and salads.

Transcendence CANNABIS
in Healing by Aimee Gregorie Bachelier
W
e have all known and been inspired by individuals in very difficult circumstances, showing great emotional strength and gratitude. After experiencing near fatal injuries, living with terminal illness diagnosis or caring for loved ones with aging needs, these people looked past their situation and saw they had more to give. They had faith and believed in the goodness that surrounded them; they would not be limited by their physical existence. They transcended suffering and were driven by their own will to educate others, bringing awareness to the value of each day and spreading love, light and understanding to the world. These abilities of graciousness can be seen in ordinary people and make anyone a believer in optimism and positive thinking. By listening to the circumstances they have overcome, we can become aware of their innate power—and our own. These individuals’ ability to change is inspiring. It may seem like a struggle, and it may take years, but it takes one single change to guide us on a new path of wellness. We must all work to understand our truth. Are we serving our greater good by living with pain, struggling with anxiety or beating ourselves up over things we cannot control? Does our body long for balance, pleasure and unconditional love? Do we want something better for ourselves and our family, or our friends? What do we really want? We can choose to have strength and focus, to transcend our circumstance. Be the light and inspiration for yourself and others. Believe in the healing powers of nature. CBD FOR PETS
What We Need to Know by Kajsa Nickels
W
ith the explosion of cannabidiol (CBD) products on the human medical scene, many pet owners are looking into this hemp plant derivative as a natural means of medicating their four-legged family members. A study conducted by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, in Ithaca, New York, found that CBD can be effective in treating some of the same ailments in pets as it does in humans. “I’ve used CBD on dogs and cats suffering from arthritis, anxiety and seizures,” says Angie Krause, DVM, a veterinarian with Boulder Holistic Vet, in Colorado. “I’ve even used CBD to treat cats with chronic respiratory infections.” Unlike CBD from marijuana, which in most cases is a Schedule I narcotic that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration considers highly subject to abuse, CBD from industrial hemp contains less than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive component THC. It is legal under federal law and can be sold nationwide, subject to state regulations. However, choosing the right CBD product is complicated by the number of confusing options.

“There are so many products on the shelves with different concentrations and formulations,” says Krause, who considers the extraction method used during production to be one of the most important factors. She favors CO2 (carbon dioxide) extraction over solvent extraction methods: “CO2 leaves no residue behind that could harm the bodies of small animals such as dogs and cats.” Stephen Cital, a veterinary technician in San Jose, California, co-founded the Facebook group Veterinary Cannabis Academy. He agrees that the purity of the extraction method is significant. He also notes that price is not necessarily an indicator of quality. “A 30-cc bottle of CBD could cost $70 at a concentration of 700 milligrams [7 mg per cc]. However, it’s possible to find the same volume at the same price at a concentration of 1,000 milligrams [10 mg per cc].” Some products don’t contain CBD at all, only hemp extract, Cital explains. “For people who don’t understand the labeling, this can be very misleading.” CBD is one of 104 cannabinoids found in both industrial hemp and marijuana plants. Full-spectrum hemp extracts contain the entire profile of cannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum hemp extracts contain everything but the THC. Cital says
NaturalTucson.com
it’s always best to start with full- or broadspectrum products for the “entourage effect”, in which the cannabinoids work in concert. Isolates of additional cannabinoids can be added as needed, he says. When choosing a product to purchase for a pet, he recommends going with companies that are able to present the consumer with a certificate of analysis by a third party. “The certificate will show the complete profile of the CBD product, including cannabinoid, terpene, residual solvent, pesticide, bacteria, mycotoxin, fungicidal and elemental profiles,” he says. Cital notes that the elemental profile is especially important. “Hemp is very good at absorbing what is in its environment, including heavy metals such as lead.” Krause favors CBD products with minimal ingredients that “should be as simple as possible,” she says. “No xylitol, no artificial colors or sweeteners.” Cindy Hesse, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, also believes that CBD for pets should be as pure as possible. Her Cocker Spaniel, Reina, is both blind and deaf. Because of her handicaps, Reina experienced extreme anxiety to the point of destroying her metal crate, furniture and door frames. Reina’s vet put her on the antidepressant and antianxiety drugs Prozac and trazadone, but these only helped for a short period. After attending a CBD conference in Florida, her veterinarian decided to see if the compound might help the dog—his first patient to use CBD. The results, Hesse says, were amazing. “Within three days, it was like I had a new dog. She no longer destroys things, she is calm, she is more engaged with her environment. I recommend CBD oil to everyone I know who has a pet with health issues.” When deciding whether to give CBD to a pet, Krause and Cital recommend working with a veterinarian to ensure the proper dosage. “People can certainly work with CBD on their own with their pets,” says Krause, “but it’s important to get the dosing and concentration right to make it worthwhile.” Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer.
