Mothers: Pursue the Life You Want

A

s a change agent coach, Rob Tull helps mothers identify their authentic desires and take action to fulfill them while still being the mother and provider they want to be. He shares his insights and techniques on pursuing wants in the new best-selling book, The One Thing Every Mom Needs to Know, by Madeleine Davis, a Parenting Strategist. Rob Tull Mothers prioritize the needs and wants of their families so fully that they often forget to prioritize their own authentic needs and wants. As parents, we want what is best for our families, but we can often be influenced by the expectations of society, peers and role stereotypes about how we should be living. “A common result is subordinating authentic desires and happiness, leading to feeling unfulfilled or trapped. The key to breaking free from this is to identify situations where we can act on our own wants and shape our lives in the way that makes happiness real today, instead of a luxury that might be there one day in the future,” says Tull. For more information, visit RSTull.com. See ad, page 10.

Non-Surgical Hair Regrowth

T

ula Wellness & Aesthetics offers non-surgical hair regrowth techniques, so clients can stop trying to hide their balding. The platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments can be customized to treat specific areas or the whole scalp, and Tula offers free consultations. For the treatment, the patient’s blood is drawn. Then the blood is spun and PRP is extracted, which is then injected into the hair follicles. PRP contains platelets and white blood cells, both of which are rich in growth factors. These growth factors help to promote activity in the hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth. After the first series of treatments, it is recommended to revisit every 6 to 12 months to maintain optimal results. Tula Wellness is a unique medical practice that offers aesthetic services and integrative health care. Their focus is on creating a “holistic” experience for health and beauty. The aesthetic and wellness center offers services to address the entire person. Location: 2404 E. River Rd., Ste. 251, Tucson. For more information, call 520-577-1129 or visit TulaWellnessMD.com. Transformational Floating Program Helps Brains

C

loud Nine Flotation is developing a free program for its members who have made the decision to go from casual floating to a practice of floating. The program, called Transformational Floating, helps each member discover how they are doing on their goals of transformation, through monthly checks. As we develop from the womb to the tomb, we are always in some kind of brain wave state. The four most common states are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. From birth through about our fourth year, we are always in Delta—somewhere between sleeping and bliss. Unless a baby/toddler is in physical distress, they are usually pretty blissed out. In this brain wave state we develop our core belief system that carries us through the rest of our life. “Delta is one state. Those in the program will also go through all the other states (eight levels) from the instinctive self through the holistic self in the areas of cognition, emotional, interpersonal, moral, basic needs, self/ego and spiritual efforts,” explains Kalyn Wolf, Owner/Operator at Cloud Nine Flotation. “New discoveries about the brain have shown us that if we want to change our lives, we need to change our thoughts, and the best way to change our thoughts is by being in the brain wave state where we developed them in the first place: Delta. We can get to Delta in sleep, meditation and floating,” explains Wolf. “We are exposed to about 400 million bits of information to process daily. Our brains cannot experience it all and what we can’t process becomes unresolved energy which leaves a residue. Floating clears away that residue, and creates space to process what’s important.” For more information, call 520-668-4017, email Info@FloatTucson.com or visit FloatTucson.com. See ad, page 33.

Instant Relief from Pain with Tucson Biofeedback’s Newest Treatment

T

ucson Biofeedback and Dr. Anna Marie Blessing are now offering clients instantaneous relief from pain with the help of the Photonic Stimulator, a non-invasive, holistic, FDA-approved treatment that can provide relief for a myriad of conditions. The infrared device aids in healing from burns, macular deAnna Marie Blessing generation, infections and injuries because it fuels the mitochondria in cells to function at a much higher level, resulting in rapid healing with less scarring and discomfort. This device has helped many experience muscle and neuropathy pain relief, joints that move and feel better, along with increased circulation and better brain function. With concussions or brain injuries, when used within 12 hours, it reduces swelling, which causes cell death in the brain. It has also been known to kill MRSA. For sensitive people with seizures, one second of running it over each of the fingertips and toe tips results in relaxation, soothing anxiety and calming the brain. People with burns have healed in half the time with minimal scarring. “The ‘interruption theory’ posits that infrared signals interrupt the incorrectly-perceived sensations of pain that become conditioned in the person who feels chronic pain,” explains Blessing. “It appears to give the brain a break from constant pain perception such that the brain can re-evaluate these sensations and can instead correctly identify them, or their origin, as non-painful stimuli.” Employing holistic and unconventional treatment methods, Tucson Biofeedback Clinic brings relief to people living with otherwise debilitating conditions. Their Biofeedback Testing, coupled with Biofeedback and Neurofeedback treatments, have been clinically proven to provide rapid recovery. Location: 4400 E. Broadway Blvd., Ste. 809, Tucson. New Nutrition for Brain Health

D

r. Nathan Conlee, of Winterhaven Health Center, now offers Trizomal Glutithione—an “amazing” anti-inflammatory liquid that helps both the brain and digestive system. In the recent past, this was only available via IV. Also new are liquid turmeric and resveratrol (both anti-inflammatory). “Brain health must be approached functionally and nutritionally, with a funcNathan Conlee tional neurological assessment, along with keeping those brain cells working using brain games, reading, art, music, passion, exercise and hobbies,” explains Conlee. “Nutritionally, our brains need protein, omega-3 fatty acids, B12 and a good anti-inflammatory diet. There are many other substances that help our brains, such as antioxidants, hydration and electrolytes. Our brains need activation, fuel, protein and nutrients.” Conlee has been in practice since 1987 with certifications in sports, neurology, nutrition, acupuncture, kinesiotape, physiotherapy and more. He offers free consultations. Location: 3020 N. Country Club Rd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-322-6161, email DrNathanConlee@gmail.com or visit PerformanceNeurology.com. See ad, page 17.

Myotherapy Treatments for Muscle Pain

A

ndrea Johnson, Certified Master Bonnie Prudden Myotherapist and Exercise Therapist, offers Myotherapy—a highly specialized therapeutic treatment for relieving muscle pain and the swelling, stiffness, weakness and limited range of motion associated with pain—at Andrew Johnson Muscles in Motion Myotherapy, in Tucson. Johnson is a 31-year veteran of Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy. House calls are available. Myotherapy was developed by Bonnie Prudden, internationally known fitness expert and consultant. A Myotherapist searches for trigger points, which are irritable spots in the muscles. They are unique in every individual and can result from falls suffered as far back as childhood, poor posture, accidents, sports, occupational, disease and stress. When trigger points “flare up” they cause muscle spasms, weakness, restricted range of motion, poor circulation and pain. During Myotherapy treatment, the patient’s trigger points are “defused” and subsequently “erased” by a Myotherapist, who uses pressure from fingers, knuckles and/or elbows, followed by a kneading massage. The newly relaxed muscles are then passively stretched, and the patient is given a series of corrective exercises to be used at home to help keep the muscles free from pain. For more information, call 786-897-0789 or Myo-1st@earthlink.net. See ad, page 32.

The Lymph-Brain Connection

D

iscoveries made in the past decade enlighten us on the importance of the ability for the brain to clear itself of waste material. Both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) drain partly or wholly to regional lymph nodes. Lymphatic drainage of the central nervous system (CNS) has implications for neuroimmunology and homeostasis of the neuronal environment in the brain. While CSF drains to lymph nodes mainly via lymphatics in the nasal mucosa, lymphatic drainage of ISF and solutes from the brain is along perivascular routes via the carotid and vertebral arteries. Vessels stiffen with age, reducing the arterial pulse that propels CSF and ISF (found in grey and white matter). Failure of lymphatic drainage of the brain is a significant factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Astrocytes are a type of glial cell supporting the management of the brain matrix and neurons in the nervous system. Astrocytes are star-shaped cells in the brain that wrap around arteries and veins and transfer molecules and fluids faster and more efficiently than diffusion. The function of the astrocyte, to control chemical composition of fluid surrounding the neurons, is named “glymphatic system”. Clearance of amyloid betas was about 30 percent slower with Alzheimer’s patients, and there is speculation that the disruptions in the glymphatic system may lead to harmful waste buildup in the brain, damaging cells. Low cell turnover capacity may contribute to cellular susceptibility to toxic proteins. Arterial pulsations help propel CSF and ISF. Each day, about a pint of CSF is filtered from the blood in the four ventricles in the brain. Most of the fluid is reabsorbed via the lymphatic system before returning to the bloodstream. Astrocytes help dissolve proteins by engulfing them before returning to the bloodstream via the glymphatic system. Manual lymphatic drainage pumps the lymph nodes along the neck region and sinuses, helping to clear the solutes and fluids from the brain. Susan Couture, BSHA, CRC, LMT. LE, is a Certified MLD/CDP at OM Oracle Massage Lymphatic Therapy, located at 6818 N. Oracle Rd., Ste. 414, Tucson. Connect at 520-668-8731 or OracleMassage.com. See ad, page 32.

Men’s Health Below the Waist

M

any men are suffering from Erectile Dysfunction (ED), bladder issues, infertility issues and inflamed, enlarged or cancerous prostate. These conditions can be reversed naturally, through healing the gut and metabolism. The body’s endocrine system produces hormones that regulate metabolism, sexual function, reproduction and mood. The insulin driven diet is bankrupting men of their sex hormones, as all hormones are inter-related. For example, diabetes is an endocrine disease that can cause ED through the hormone insulin and impaired blood flow. If glucose, fructose, seed oils and processed foods are the predominant diet, be prepared for low libido, flaccid muscles, swollen prostate and difficult urination. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Gut inflammation driven by the processed foods and pharmaceutical lifestyle is the unseen part of the iceberg. This inflammation creates a breach in the gut wall and allows contents of the GI tract access to the blood and lymph. This metabolic damage sets the stage for metabolic syndrome and its markers, including: abdominal fat, high blood lipid, glucose, insulin, blood pressure, A1C and fatty liver. The metabolic dysregulation affects the men’s intestines, bladder and prostate. Just as polycystic ovarian syndrome is a sign of metabolic syndrome in women, ED and problematic prostates are signs in men. Prostate issues include prostate cancer, an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), or an infected prostate, prostatitis. Until men get their metabolism under control, ED, BPH and infertility are here to stay and progress. The idea is to regenerate what has degenerated through nutrition, masturbation, movement and meditation. All degenerative diseases are reversible naturally. Sheila Shea, founder of the Intestinal Health Institute, is a National Board Certified colon hydrotherapist with 42 years in practice. She is a Certified Gut and Psychology practitioner and is a subject matter expert in metabolic syndrome and sugar. She offers a program to heal and seal the gut wall and reseed good microbes in order to heal ED and prostate anomalies. Photon Genius Super Sauna Therapy

T

he most powerful sauna in the world, the Photon Genius features advanced electro-magnetic technologies, including harmonic FAR infrared energy transmission, bio-photonic light frequencies and vibrational frequency harmonics. These combine to target the whole body at a cellular level and allow for specific areas, organs and tissues to benefit directly. Developed by Ed Skilling, the Photon Genius Super Sauna is a revolutionary way to power up the immune system, detoxify, reduce inflammation and relieve pain. This machine is an open, curved horseshoe shape which is 6 feet tall, 5 feet wide and 4 feet deep, allowing convenience and flexibility of use. The infrared encourages a “hyperthermia” or sweating effect, which helps the body to invigorate, cleanse and detoxify. The warmth also helps relieve pain, stiffness and soreness. Using the Photon Genius helps the body to naturally increase its production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is vital for managing inflammation and scavenging free radicals in the body. The Photon Genius has come to Tucson through Alive & Well Arizona, a new wellness center in the west end of the city, located at 2420 W. Ruthrauff Rd., Ste. 160. Revamping Recycling

global briefs

Aqua Breakthrough

urfin/Shutterstock.com

China, one of the world’s main importers of recyclable waste, is rejecting shipments that are more than 0.5 percent impure, so loads contaminated by a greasy pizza box, disposable coffee cups and the odd plastic bag could end up in the local landfill instead. Most single-use cups, for instance, are lined with a fine film of polyethylene, which makes the cups liquid-proof, but also difficult and expensive to reprocess. Most waste management facilities will treat the cups as trash. Since China banned impure plastics, many U.S. municipalities no longer accept plastics numbered 3 to 7, which can include yogurt cups, butter tubs and vegetable oil bottles. Another contamination culprit is food residue. Washing out food scraps from recyclables can be just as important as putting the appropriate item in the recycling bin.

With the world facing a future of climate change and water scarcity, finding an environmental way to cleanse drinking water is paramount. Researchers in China contend they are working on a method to remove bacteria from water that’s both highly efficient and environmentally sound. By shining ultraviolet light onto a two-dimensional sheet of graphitic carbon nitride, the team’s prototype can purify two-and-a-half gallons of water in one hour, killing virtually all the harmful bacteria present. This technique of photocatalytic disinfection is an alternative to current eco-unfriendly water filtration systems such as chlorination or ozone disinfection.

WellnessFirst! began after a conversation between DeeAnn Saber, NMD, Zach Saber, LMT and Lynda Witt, CCT in June 2010, who were seeking to provide efficacious and affordable alternative healing modalities to all who seek it. Since opening its doors in October of 2010, WellnessFirst! has been doing just that. Today, WellnessFirst! is a collaborative that includes four varied wellness businesses and six main practitioners. therapy, naturopathic primary care and more. “WellnessFirst! was created as an integrative wellness center for people seeking help in regaining or maintaining their health,” enthuses Zach. “The convenience of communication between practitioners allows for continuity of care—knowing that each of us is available to assist our cohorts when it’s called for. We all participant in in-house referring, but we also send clients to other healthcare practitioners throughout Tucson and the surrounding area.” Made up of Transformational Medicine, Proactive Health Solutions, Very Special Alternatives and Counseling Concepts, the collective of healing professionals has created a positive, healthy and patient-focused environment, where all are welcome. WellnessFirst!’s resident Naturopathic Physician, Dr. DeeAnn Saber, takes the time to listen, to be a great medical detective and get to the underlying causes of disease. At Transformational Medicine, PLLC, DeeAnn offers integrated whole-person care with a specialty in endocrinology and particularly thyroid issues. As a Functional Medicine Naturopathic Doctor, she looks at what is an optimal lab range for the client through comprehensive bloodwork and other testing specific to their concerns. She helps those with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s, IBS, GERD, SIBO, joint pain, gut pain, Lyme disease, brain fog and more. DeeAnn also treats gastrointestinal disorders by targeting food allergies, bacterial imbalances, parasites or inflammation. She is well trained in injection therapies with ProloOzone for relieving pain and vitamin treatments for chronic illnesses. “Taking the time to listen to you and to figure out what’s really happening aids in identifying what is your underlying dis-ease and takes the guesswork out, so we find the answers you have been looking for,” she says. “Naturopathic medicine is the answer.”

Lynda Witt of Proactive Health Solutions, LLC offers medical Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) to women and men of all ages and health standings. “Medical DITI offers a non-invasive, adjunctive, diagnostic technique that allows the examiner to visualize and quantify changes in skin surface temperature,” explains Witt, a Certified Clinical Thermographer. The effectiveness of DITI is based on each woman’s unique and stable “thermal signature” in the breast. Once this baseline thermogram is determined, DITI is used annually to monitor for alterations from that baseline. Medical DITI does not replace other diagnostic tools but can help bridge the gap between X-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI and DITI. It is radiationfree, very sensitive and highly reliable. “DITI is a means to alert women to changes within the breast tissue that require

Our Connection with All Life

A

by Roger B. Harwell

fter moving from California to Arizona, a woman was feeling especially lonely and sad one morning. Her husband was gone for a couple of days on a business trip and she still didn’t know too many people in Tucson, so she was missing her friends and family. Change is difficult, even though we know it is the best decision possible. It does take time to adjust to a new life—a new way of doing things. She stepped outside on her patio, a place of peace and beauty as it blended with the lovely desert plants and flowers. As she admired the view, a small red male house finch landed beside

her. She greeted him with joy and he looked up at her, cocking his little head to one side. He didn’t fly away, as most birds do almost immediately. She asked him if he was okay, because most birds don’t act this way. He just continued looking at her. She asked him, “Would you like to sing HU (hue)?” HU is an ancient name for God. When HU is sung with love, it opens the heart. The woman closed her eyes and sang HU for a few moments. The little finch stayed right with her. Grateful for his presence, she leaned down and asked him if she could touch his head. Slowly, she lowered a finger toward him and gently touched the top of his little head—a magic moment. That connection with this little finch was a bond of love—a bond we can discover with all life if we allow it. The little bird was her companion for about 10 minutes. The Holy Spirit brought this loving presence into her world. Spirit works with everyone in the way that they individually can best understand it, and always for our benefit. When she went back in her house, she was completely transformed. The loneliness and sadness that had filled her had completely been replaced with love, peace and joy. Singing HU and the presence of the house finch opened her heart to divine love and the healing it brings. Enjoy singing HU yourself, anytime, anywhere, out loud or silently. If you would like to experience singing HU with a group, please come to a Sound of Soul event, from 2 to 3 p.m., June 15, at Morris Udall Recreation Center, 7200 E Tanque Verde Rd, Tucson. Brain-Savers Smart Strategies for Preventing Dementia

W

by Melinda Hemmelgarn

ith 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, there’s no shortage of advice on how to enhance, preserve and restore brain function. Judging from the assortment of brain training games and apps to the multitude of books promising ways to avoid or even reverse dementia, a growing number of aging Americans want to know the best strategies for preventing and treating cognitive decline and memory loss.

Prevention: A ‘No-Brainer’

As with any disease, prevention throughout the life cycle is key, but especially important for Alzheimer’s—the leading cause of dementia worldwide. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the illness is considered a slowly progressive brain disease that begins well before symptoms emerge. Despite predictions that the number of afflicted Americans will reach nearly 14 18

million by 2050, there are no drug cures. David Perlmutter, M.D., a board-certified neurologist based in Naples, Florida, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, summarizes a recent study evaluating the effectiveness of currently available Alzheimer’s medications. “Not only were Alzheimer’s patients who were taking these drugs not gaining any benefit, but their rate of cognitive decline was worsened when they were on the Alzheimer’s medications,” thus making lifestyle risk reduction even more critical. Dale Bredesen, M.D., a professor in the UCLA Department of Neurology and author of The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline, has studied the disease’s neurobiology for decades. He believes drug therapies have failed because scientists neglected to focus on why individuals develop the disease in the first place. He

emphasizes, “Alzheimer’s is not a single disease,” even if the symptoms appear to be the same. Bredesen says it’s the result of the brain trying to protect itself from multiple metabolic and toxic threats. Bredesen developed the ReCODE (reversal of cognitive decline) protocol, an ambitious, comprehensive and personalized therapeutic program that includes genetic, cognitive and blood testing, plus supplements and lifestyle improvements, including stress reduction, improved sleep, diet and exercise. With the goal of identifying and treating the individual’s pathway to disease, ReCODE addresses fixing five key areas he believes form the underlying origins and progression of Alzheimer’s disease: insulin resistance; inflammation/infections; hormone, nutrient and nerve growth factors; toxins; and dysfunctional nerve synapses. The Lancet International Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care also advocates multiple points of action. By addressing nine “potentially modifiable risk factors” throughout the lifespan, the commission says, “More than one-third of global dementia cases may be preventable.” These factors include maximizing education in early life; controlling hypertension, obesity and hearing loss in mid-life; and in later life, managing depression and diabetes, increasing physical activity and social contact, and not smoking.

Food as Medicine

Martha Clare Morris, Sc.D., a nutritional epidemiologist at the Rush University Medical Center, in Chicago, and author of Diet for the MIND: The Latest Science on What to Eat to Prevent Alzheimer’s and Cognitive Decline, says, “Given that Alzheimer’s disease is known as an oxidative-inflammatory disease, there has to be a dietary influence.” From two decades of research involving more than 10,000 people, Morris developed the MIND diet, which stands for “Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay”. It’s a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, modified to include specific components from each that offer the most protection against dementia. Morris identifies 10 brain-healthy dietary components: leafy greens, vegetables, berries, whole grains, nuts, seafood, poultry, beans and legumes, olive oil, and one glass of wine per day; plus five unhealthy components to limit: sweets and pastries, red meats, fried and fast foods, whole-fat cheese and butter or margarine containing trans fat. Morris found those individuals that most closely followed the dietary recommendations lowered their risk for Alzheimer’s disease by as much as 53 percent, while those following the diet moderately well showed a reduction of about 35 percent.

Morris acknowledges a number of common aging-related, yet treatable, conditions that can cause “dementia-like symptoms,” including low thyroid hormones and vitamin B12 deficiency. She also identifies specific brain-protective compounds including vitamins E, B12, folate and niacin, plus lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene and flavonoids found in colorful fruits and vegetables, tea and nuts. She is currently testing the MIND diet, plus a mild calorie restriction on 600 individuals 65 to 84 years old living in Boston and Chicago; results are expected in 2021. The Alzheimer’s Association is also recruiting individuals for a new lifestyle intervention study. Aarti Batavia, a registered dietitian based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a certified practitioner of functional medicine trained in the ReCODE protocol, says, “Diets that are good for the heart are good for the brain.” But she also warns that many common medications such as statins, antihistamines, some antidepressants and proton pump inhibitors (that reduce stomach acid, which is required for absorbing vitamin B12) can increase the risk for dementia.

Smart Steps

As we continue to discover how genetics, environment and lifestyle factors intersect, take the following smart steps to promote longevity and vibrant brain health:

June 2019

1

Monitor and control blood sugar: Type 2 diabetes increases

the risk for dementia. Brenda Davis, a registered dietitian in Vancouver, British Columbia, and author of The Kick Diabetes Cookbook: An Action Plan and Recipes for Defeating Diabetes, advises reducing the glycemic load of the diet by limiting refined carbohydrates and sugars, and eating a high-fiber, plant-based diet. Dorothy Sears, Ph.D., a member of the executive committee of the Center for Circadian Biology at the University of California, San Diego, says it’s not just what we eat that matters, but when. She discovered multiple metabolic benefits, including reduced blood sugar, with prolonged nightly fasting—13 hours between the last meal at night and the first meal in the morning. Brenda Davy, Ph.D., a registered dietitian and researcher at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, says hydration can influence blood sugar, weight and cognition, especially among middle-aged and older populations. She recommends drinking two cups of water prior to meals to moderate food intake.

2

Focus on ‘good’ fats: Olive oil,

nuts, avocados, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty, cold-water fish protect both the heart and brain. Michael Lewis, M.D., based in Potomac, Maryland, recommends an “omega-3 protocol” to help his patients recover from traumatic brain injury, which can increase risk for dementia.

3

Spice up your diet: Batavia recom-

mends cooking with brain-protecting herbs and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, thyme and rosemary, which can help reduce inflammation and risk for dementia.

4

Mind your gut: Western medicine has historically separated the brain from the rest of the body. But research on the “gut-brain axis” shows there’s communication between our gut microbes and brain, plus direct links to neurodevelopmental disorders and dementia. “What goes on in the gut influences every manner of activity within the brain: the health of the brain, the functionality of

NaturalTucson.com

the brain, the brain’s resistance to disease process and even mood,” says Perlmutter. Both Perlmutter and Teresa Martin, a registered dietitian in Bend, Oregon, emphasize the importance of high-fiber plant foods that gut microbes need to produce beneficial, short-chain fatty acids to protect against inflammation, insulin resistance and “leaky gut”.

5

Prioritize sleep: All brain (and gut) experts recommend adequate sleep—seven to eight hours each night— to restore body and mind.

6

Exercise: Both Morris and Perlmutter recommend aerobic activities in particular, like walking, swimming and cycling, to improve blood circulation to the brain and increase the production of a hormone called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is responsible for stimulating neuron growth and protecting against cognitive decline.

7

Avoid environmental toxins:

Exposure to pesticides, pollutants and heavy metals such as lead, mercury and

arsenic can increase the risk of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Choosing organic food both reduces exposure to toxins and protects water quality and farmworker health. Virginia Rauh, Ph.D., deputy director of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, in New York City, spoke at the National Pesticide Forum in Manhattan in April. She explains that of the 5,000 new chemicals introduced each year, “at least 25 percent are neurotoxic,” and even very low-level exposure can harm children’s neurodevelopment.

8

Socialize: In studies of “Blue Zone” populations that enjoy longevity with low rates of dementia, social engagement appears to be the secret sauce for quality of life. The Craniosacral Rhythm Does it Really Exist?

W

by Jean Read

hat makes craniosacral therapy such a powerful treatment? Most likely, it is because craniosacral therapy (CST) treats the individual as a whole and does not separate out the physical body from the influences of the spiritual, emotional and mental bodies. As science is further discovering, there is no separation between these aspects of our beings. CST is a way of being with life through an intention to be more vital, whole and alive. We allow the body’s consciousness/ inner wisdom to precede and guide the session instead of mental intelligence of what “should” be. By tapping into and melding with the consciousness of the individual with the intention of healing, the unconscious level of being may step forward, revealing thoughts, emotions and memories of unresolved issues stored in the client’s tissues. From a place of nonjudgmental neutral and acceptance, the body’s wisdom can then direct and release healing down to

the cellular and mystical level. There has been much debate over what is the craniosacral rhythm (CSR), its rate, amplitude and symmetry for over a century. Studies performed by Danish scientist Thomas Rasmussen, Ph.D., MSC, MST-D have now put much of that to rest. Working with Karl Christian Meulengract (who built a machine to measure and record the CSR), the two were able to verify the presence of the CSR and its variance within a group of 50 normal individuals. They were able to identify this rhythm separate from the respiratory and cardiac rhythm, noting that the average CSR was between 4 and 7 cycles/minute. It is believed that this rhythm reflects tension stored in the nervous system or tissues. Release of this tension allows for greater circulation to the nervous system or other tissues, allowing for more vitality, improved self-regulation and wellness of the being. Rasmussen then did further testing of what happens to the CSR during a cranio-

sacral treatment. In advanced trainings in CST referred to as somato-emotional release, the therapist is taught how to induce a still point (a sudden stop in the CSR) and to sense when the body experiences a sudden stop of the CSR, called a Significance Detector (SD). The SD indicates that something significant is “speaking” from the body/mind/spirit. While the CSR feels as if it has stopped, actual testing showed that it continued throughout the treatment. However, as practitioners and clients experienced, the CSR itself seemed to have stopped. It’s as if a doorway into Karionic/ Aionic Time (time of the self—a limitless, timeless awareness) has opened. Many of us have experienced this timespace moment when painting, writing or observing a beautiful scene. Time seems to have stopped, yet creation continues. It was also noted that during the SD and nearing the end of this space-time experiential treatment, the amplitude of the skull increased significantly, compared to the previous monitoring during the session. This large shift in amplitude is believed to increase fluid to the brain (ease circulation and flow of cerebrospinal fluid) and have a positive change in the fascial tensegrity of the structures of the skull, its contents and that of the entire body. It is during this experience that clients sense a large shift within themselves. We currently do not have the instrumentation to measure the changes that may be occurring at a cellular, physiological, emotional and spiritual level. This treatment is one that often eludes our own explanations as to what the client is experiencing. Perhaps this advanced craniosacral treatment allows the client to touch the self in a timeless space, where self-realization becomes a possibility. From a place of timeless space, stepping into the knowing of a new possibility allows for the self-healing mechanism of the body to cascade on all levels for the client. They have an improved sense of wholeness, well-being, resolution and insight to a deeper knowing of themselves after a treatment. Jean Read offers craniosacral treatments, which may also be combined with visceral manipulation, lymphatic stimulation or myofascial techniques. She has been trained by the Upledger Institute on using CST for specific brain structures. Connect at 956-566-5443, LiveYurPassion@gmail.com or IAHP.com/Jean-Read. See ad, page 33.

You’ve Located Mold—Now What?

F

by Lance Morris

irst, we need to establish if mold in our environment is a possible factor contributing to our health problems. The test kits that can be purchased online or from the hardware store, which use culture plates put out to collect air samples, are a waste of time and money. The standard for mold testing is the environmental relative moldiness index (ERMI). There are two different levels of ERMI testing. Although they can be purchased online for home testing, it is recommended that one use a certified industrial hygienist (IH). Home kits cost about $150 to $350, while IH companies usually charge from $300 to $500. Now let’s say we have confirmed both the types of molds and their relative concentrations. The next step is remediation to remove the source of environmental exposure. To be clear, if we live or work in a contaminated space, trying to merely treat mold on the surface or treat ourselves for the large array of symptoms will fail. Attempting to self-remediate is problematic. Any mold that has entered a permeable surface cannot be treated with bleach, vinegar, soap, essential oils or baking soda; these products are only effective on hard surfaces. Unfortunately, once mold has entered particle board, dry wall, wood or insulation, these materials must be removed. To do this safely requires proper air-handling equipment and protective gear for the eyes, lungs and body. Special materials must be used to stop airborne spores and effectively attach them to wall and floor surfaces. Effective microorganisms (EM1) are ideal for this purpose, although most professional companies use other chemical viscous products.

EM1 will denature mold mycotoxin, rendering it harmless. If we just spray a layer of EM1 onto a permeable surface, unless we saturate it completely, the EM1 will fail. This is why removal of permeable contaminated materials is essential. Once that is accomplished, treating everything with EM1 is an excellent preventive measure. Once the home environment is mold-free, the next step is to do adequate laboratory tests on the patient(s). This includes standard, regular blood tests, which are frequently completely normal. This often leads to patient confusion and doctors trying to reassure patients that they are fine when they are definitely not. Many of the tests that mold specialist physicians use are actually tests that show markers of inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by many factors, of which mold is only one. It is a careful history, symptom review and elimination of other diagnosable conditions that leads to the conclusion of mycotoxin as primary cause. In truth, physicians that treat the whole body find that there are many vectors contributing to illness. Many of these vectors overlap, cross-contributing to induce a disease process. As such, even when we are confident that mycotoxin may be a primary induction vector in a particular patient, this does not exclude other primary, secondary or tertiary vectors as well. Dr. Lance J. Morris practices at Wholistic Family Medicine, in Tucson. He has been in clinical practice in Tucson since 1985. Connect at 520-322-8122 or ResonantSoundTherapy.com. See ad, page 11.

The Real Power of Sound Healing by Allen Smith

I

t’s a sobering fact that stress is the number one cause of illness and disease. According to Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., stress is the root cause for almost 90 percent of doctor visits. Thus, any healing modality that reduces stress is a major benefit. In recent scientific studies, sound healing therapies are being touted as the most effective at reducing stress. But why is sound healing so effective? The little-known answer is: water. Thanks to quantum biology, epigenetic science and a rebirth of water research, there’s been an explosion of new insight into the roles that water plays in biology. Our body is made up of over 99 percent water molecules that can store vast amounts of energy. Due to water’s quantum states, it can also store information in memory. Water is integral to the immense communication system of the body.

24

Tucson Edition

NaturalTucson.com

So, what then is the relevance of sound healing to the water in our body? Everything. That’s because water is sensitive and reacts to literally all kinds of energy vibration and information. Sound healing vibrations promote wellness through the message carrier of water—the real power behind sound therapy. Studies in quantum water structuring have revealed that water’s “blueprint-like” memory of a chemical alone can emulate the chemical itself and elicit the same biologic response. Thus, water memory may hold the future of medicine. Water is positively structured by sound healing vibrations and the body responds to the changed water within. There are many examples of ways that sound healing reduces stress. Sound waves can synchronize the brain into coherent and stress-free activity. In this state, we feel more connected to the intelligence of life itself. Bio-friendly sound energy soothes our parasympathetic system by impacting our senses and vibrating our body’s water; it creates momentary vortices in the water as sacred mandalas holding patterns of information within. In addition, sound and light can electrically charge intercellular water called 4th phase or EZ Water; this water is like lymph fluid that has an activated, life supportive code. During a sound healing session, one may use modern and ancient tools long recognized for their power to shift one’s state of being. At a minimum, results for the client are profound stress reduction, but often, much more. Emotional release, deep surrender, clarity, lifted awareness and even mystical events do occur. The body is infused with energy and new information that creates shifts and aligns one holistically. Allen Smith, owner of C3 Studio, is a didgeridoo master and sound healing veteran who has spent 18 years immersed in the leading-edge study of quantum water structuring. Strategic Shaving: Showering first, not pressing hard with the razor and going in the direction of hair growth may minimize skin irritation and razor bumps, not to mention cuts.

Key Skin Care Steps and Treatments for Men

S

by Suzanne Pear

ome men seem reluctant to expand their skin care routine to anything more than washing and (maybe) shaving their faces. Even adding moisturizer and sunscreen usually meets with some resistance. However, neglecting our skin may have significant, long-term consequences for our appearance and our health. The skin is our largest organ and is targeted with protecting us from the outside world, both as a physical barrier and as a chemical barrier. Skin chemistry is very complex and requires contributions from the sebaceous and sweat glands and digestion by skin bacteria to create an adverse environment for potential pathogens seeking entry into the body. Nowadays, with our common practice of daily bathing, we strip off that oily, acidic coating but don’t allow enough time between cleansings for this “acid mantle” to be replaced by nature. So, we need to lend a hand with these skin care tips and treatments.

Mild Cleansing: Even if there is a problem with acne, the

skin should not be harshly cleansed every day. Use a creamy, nontreatment cleanser at least 50 percent of the time. If necessary, target treatment to just the affected areas will minimize irritating the skin and stripping protective oils.

Toning and Hydrating the Skin: Using an alcohol-free witch hazel or other mild toner after cleansing and shaving helps re-balance the skin’s pH to its preferred slightly acidic 5.5 level. Some toners have hyaluronic acid, which pulls moisture into the skin. Adding a light moisturizer is always in order, even if you feel the skin is oily. These steps may help keep rosacea redness at bay, as well as reduce overall skin oil production. Sun Protection: The sun’s ultraviolet rays cause most skin damage, signs of aging and skin cancers. Using sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 every day is critical for keeping skin firm and young looking. Reminders to include covering neck and ears may be necessary along with annual dermatology skin checks. Mineral sunscreens may provide better coverage and won’t burn your eyes. Pore Clarifying Treatments: How frequently a man

should have a professional facial treatment depends on age, skin type and skin issues. If there is a problem with large pores, blackheads or acne, treatments should at least be monthly until controlled, with homecare being an essential part of the process.

Microneedling: Acne scars commonly plague men.

Microneedling with subcision of the scar collagen will break down the acne scar and stimulate normal, healthy collagen to regenerate in its place. A series of this office treatment will also help fill in those frown and smile lines that showed up when we weren’t looking. The health and texture of the skin are important aspects of our appearance and the primary gauge by which our age is judged. Men want to look their youthful best just as much as women do. The Graduate by Francisco Norzagary

I

t’s a long way from the mean streets of Nogales, Mexico where artist Francisco Norzagary grew up. As a little boy, he had to steal to eat. When he was in the third grade, his family immigrated to the U.S. for a better life. They crossed the border to Nogales, Arizona and eventually settled in California. After working for 42 years, Norzagary injured his back on the job. He returned to Arizona and settled in Tucson. Finding himself homeless, he started

painting to make a living. Norzagary’s determination in the face of adversity is a poignant example of an immigrant’s American success story. His art is difficult to categorize. It reflects his Southwest heritage and yet it also has a phantasmagorical quality. The majority of his work has a fantasy appearance, like something in a dream or created by his imagination. “I use anything and everything to be creative,” he notes. Norzagary paints utilizing watercolors, Indian ink, colored pencil, acrylic and oils. He considers his work to embrace themes of nature, Native Americans, revolutionary history and anything that is related to the Southwest. He currently sells his art at El Charro Café, America’s oldest Mexican restaurant. His work has also been exhibited at the DeGrazia Gallery of the Sun, built by the renowned artist Ted DeGrazia, on North Swan. A favorite subject of his is butterflies, the genesis of which came from his desire to paint the seasons. For example, “Mariposa” features an avant-garde woman with a look from the 1920s that has angel wings on her back filled with butterflies. His art also features a portfolio of hummingbirds. The hummingbirds are all whimsical in their details, including: Los Lobos; Homeland Security; Carlos Santana; John Wayne; The Good, The Bad and the Ugly; “Mona Lisa”; “The Last Supper”; and even a hummingbird with a University of Arizona t-shirt. He sells his prints in frames that are as unique and beautiful as his art. Norzagary started painting when he was three years old, however he didn’t think of himself as an artist until much later in life. His art and subject matter of butterflies and hummingbirds symbolize his own flight from poverty. With the guarded optimism of a late blooming artist, Norzagary states, “I never painted to become rich or a millionaire; I paint because I love it. As an artist you struggle all your life to get recognized. If it’s meant to happen, it will.” Norzagary expresses that what he is most grateful for is his family. He is the proud father of four boys. He loves to regale his customers with stories about his struggle. When he moved to Tucson he prayed to the Virgin de Guadalupe for a place to live. “She’s our spiritual mom. I pray to her and I paint her a lot,” he notes. His prayers were answered when a realtor called him about a ranch house in the

desert. He knew it was meant to be when he discovered that the house was on Altar Street and that it had four mesquite trees at the entrance. He built a chapel for the Virgin de Guadalupe in her honor when he moved into his new home. In addition to being a self-taught artist, Norzagary is a philosopher. He engages his customers with his gems of wisdom, sharing aphorisms like: “Nothing is impossible and everything is possible”; “In life we all have our speed bumps. It’s a reminder to us that they will make you or they will break you”; and “Believe in yourself and be thankful for what you’ve been given.” How does Norzagary deal with being an artist in a capitalistic society? As a well-

known local artist, not only does he not care about his financial success, but he is committed to philanthropy. “As an artist, the community supports me in what I do. In return, I give back to the community. I like to get involved. Maybe it’s something we all should do—help out,” he observes. Some of the ways he helps out in Tucson include working with atrisk youth teaching art and donating to the Community Food Bank. Norzagary considers his art as an expression of who he is as a person. He paints to spread kindness. Despite the fact that he was raised in a home with an alcoholic father who abused his mother, he also grew up embracing the love of music. He attributes this affinity for music to his mother. She sang with a mariachi band when he was young. Some of his favorite musicians include Jimmy Hendrix, Javier Solis, the “Frank Sinatra of Mexico”, and Los Lobos. Norzagary plays guitar and uses music as the inspiration for his art. “I play guitar to warm up the engine to go paint,” he analogizes. Look closely enough at his art and you can hear the music.

Nature’s Toolbox The Key to Prostate Health by Melanie Laporte

T

he prostate is about the size of a walnut, yet this tiny gland can be the source of major problems for many men. Most potential health risks are preventable and treatable with proper diet, lifestyle changes—and a new array of natural approaches. Holistic and integrative practitioners are looking beyond traditional supplements like saw palmetto, lycopene, pygeum and green tea extract to treat common conditions such as enlargement of the prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which can develop as men grow older. Rob Raponi, a naturopathic doctor in Vaughan, Ontario, sees men struggling with nocturia, an effect of BPH that wakes them during the night with the urge to urinate. “It interrupts your sleep, which accumulates and starts to interrupt your day,” says Raponi, who uses zinc-rich ground flax and pumpkin seeds to ease BPH urinary symptoms and inflammation. He’s also achieving positive results by utilizing combinations of rye grass pollen extract. He says, “It seems to work wonders.”

Confronting Cancer According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine men will be diagnosed 28

with prostate cancer, the second-leading cause of male deaths in U.S. However, it’s also one of the most preventable cancers. “The key is to make our body inhospitable to mutating cells which could form cancer that ultimately threatens your life,” says Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston. Part of the answer may lie in the human gut, which makes diet central to addressing prostate issues. According to a recent review of research published in Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, the microbiome—a community of microbes that supports digestion and the immune system—may influence prostate inflammation and the development of prostate cancer. “The microbiome’s ability to affect systemic hormone levels may also be important, particularly in a disease such as prostate cancer that is dually affected by estrogen and androgen levels,” it concludes.

The Nutritional Factor

“A plant-centered diet with low-glycemicload foods feeds your microbiome, which is at its healthiest and will thrive when it’s fed healthy soluble fibers provided exclusively from the plant world,” says Cohen, the

author of Anticancer Living: Transform Your Life and Health with the Mix of Six. Antioxidants and plant nutrients counterbalance oxidative stress and damage, adds Cohen. “Cruciferous and bracken vegetables—raw kale, broccoli, Swiss chard, dark leafy greens and soy—invigorate the prostate. Also, a couple of Brazil nuts per day give a healthy dose of selenium to decrease risk factors.” Jim Occhiogrosso, a Fort Myers, Florida-based natural health practitioner and author of Your Prostate, Your Libido, Your Life, notes that most incidences of prostate cancer are slow growing and not aggressive. “One of my first clients was in his early 80s, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and treated it with only herbs. Fifteen years later, in his mid-90s, he still has prostate cancer. He’s still doing fine and getting around, albeit slowly.” Occhiogrosso says he uses herbal mixtures of saw palmetto, “which is a good supplement for beefing up the immune system—also solar berry, mushroom extracts, vitamin C and full-fraction vitamin E.” Mark Stengler, a naturopathic doctor and co-author of Outside The Box Cancer Therapies: Alternative Therapies That Treat and Prevent Cancer, recommends a blend of five grams of modified citrus pectin, 200 milligrams of reishi mushroom and 1,000 milligrams of green tea extract taken two to three times per day, plus vitamin D. The five-year survival rate for men diagnosed with prostate cancer is about 98 percent, and it’s been rising for the last few years. Early diagnosis is critical, says Raponi. “If you stop prostate cancer when it’s still in stage one or early on, the five-year survival rate is 100 percent, but if it’s later on, it starts to drop into the 70s.” The same measures employed to prevent prostate issues—whole foods, natural herbs and regular exercise—should still be pursued, but more aggressively if cancer should develop. “The intensity becomes more salient after diagnosis,” says Cohen, “but we don’t need a diagnosis to up our game with healthy living.” Melanie Laporte is a licensed massage therapist and health writer based in Austin, Texas.

FATHERHOOD’S PAIN AND GLORY

We Must Face Our Own Story First

I

by Chris Bruno

have worked in the corporate world, served as a missionary in the Middle East during 9/11 and the Iraq War, been assaulted with a knife, launched a small business and a nonprofit and suffered deep loss at the early deaths of dear friends, but nothing has terrified or paralyzed me more than fathering my own son. It has demanded me to first face my own father-story with an intensity and intentionality I would rather flee than engage. My parents more than adequately provided for my physical needs. I had friends, lived in the suburbs and even had a horse. From the outside looking in, I had nothing to complain about. Any time the haunting ache of father-hunger emerged from my soul, I quickly squelched it, telling myself to simply move on. It is the story of most men in my generation. I continued to live as if all was well until I married and had a son of my own. I was now a father, and the weight of this title sent my soul into a tailspin. What is father? Who am I as father? What does it mean to father? And finally, with the force of a left upper jab to the jaw: How was I fathered? I realized that to father him, I, myself, still needed to be fathered.

In my conversations with men about their father-stories, the most frequent sentence I hear is, “My dad did okay. He did the best he could.” But no child wants an “okay” dad. Every child longs for a dad to know, see, pursue, hope, envision, create and bless. Franciscan friar and author Richard Rohr states, “If we do not transform our pain, we will transmit it in some form.” Untransformed pain from our father, whether from his absence, vacancy or violence, will inevitably be transmitted to our children. I can only take my son as far as I myself have gone. Our sons were born into an already existing story—our story—and for them to know who they are, we need to know who we are, in all of our glory and pain. From this place of freedom, we can usher our sons into a manhood we can come to know together. hen it comes to chiseling muscles, recovering from injury or reducing stress, men are finding that hitting the pool might even surpass hitting the gym. “Water aerobics is a great form of exercise for men looking to sculpt their bodies, because water offers multidirectional drag resistance that assists in developing muscle balance within the body,” says Denver aquatic fitness trainer Sean Sullivan. Pool workouts offer men and women of all ages and condition a low-impact, energizing way to get fit and burn calories. From specialized classes for patients with Parkinson’s disease to relief from the pain of arthritis and fibromyalgia, water aerobics harbors benefits for everyone. The Mayo Clinic adds improved cardiovascular health to the reasons why more men are joining classes that were previously considered to be a women’s domain. A recent meta-analysis of 14 studies published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that aquatic

NaturalTucson.com

exercise can significantly lower blood pressure. Another study published in the Asian Journal of Sports Medicine reached a similar conclusion when men that underwent 55 minutes of aquatic exercise three times a week exhibited marked reductions in hypertension.

Go Vertical for Stronger Muscles

Water aerobics classes, which don’t involve swimming, are conducted in waist-high water. These vertical workouts provide 75 percent more resistance than land-based exercise. “When you perform a bicep curl in the water with no equipment, not only do you exercise the bicep muscle on the way up, but because of drag resistance, you’re also exercising your triceps muscle on the way down, for a balanced workout,” says Sullivan. Exercise physiologist Clinton Maclin, of the Piedmont Atlanta Fitness Center, in Georgia, concurs. “Aqua aerobics helps all muscle groups benefit from increased en-

durance, resistance and range of motion.” For optimum fitness, Maclin recommends getting wet for a minimum of two-and-ahalf hours per week to stay in condition. The heart is also a muscle that benefits greatly from aquatic fitness. “Hydrostatic pressure is a property of water that aids in blood flow return to the heart, which may lead to a reduction in heart rate,” says Sullivan. “It’s a physiological benefit from simply immersing oneself in water.”

Less Pain, More Flexibility A number of recent studies have shown that aquatic exercise can ease pain in conditions such as fibromyalgia and also improve flexibility in joints. It’s recommended by both the Osteoarthritis Research Society International and by the American College of Rheumatology. In the water, older individuals can exercise without the risk of falling. “The water creates buoyancy, making it less likely to make sudden movements. The low impact of the water allows longer participation time, mobility and stability,” says Maclin. “Seniors can participate in higher-

intensity movements and perform more activities, even while injured.” Aqua aerobics helps improve balance and is also a boon to soft tissue. “Warm water provides a tremendous benefit to tendons and ligaments, adding mobility, flexibility and well-being,” notes instructor and fitness trainer Márcia Wilken, in Shawano, Wisconsin. “Seniors can benefit most from water exercise at least twice a week. It can also improve cognitive thinking and helps to promote a better sleep pattern.”

Rehabilitation, Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis Aquatic therapy in warm water helps to facilitate recovery after joint surgery and injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament tears in the knee. “Warm pools are a great environment for young athletes recovering from sports-related injuries. Hydrostatic pressure reduces swelling of the injured area, allowing for greater range of motion. Buoyancy reduces the load placed upon the injured area and reduces pain,” says Sullivan. “The proper-

ties of water allow injured athletes to begin the recovery process sooner.” For individuals with Parkinson’s, the American Parkinson Disease Association recommends aquatic exercise for improved balance and pain reduction. In 2014, the European Journal of Experimental Biology published an eight-week Iranian study involving 60 men with multiple sclerosis that concluded it improved balance. Water resistance does a body good, but the experts suggest one-on-one attention for best results. “I strongly recommend finding an aquatic fitness and rehabilitation specialist, because not all exercises are beneficial for everyone,” says Sullivan. Wilken agrees. “A trainer can teach technique and different ways to move in the water, as well as proper breathing and good body alignment. It will double the benefits.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books on spirituality and clinical aromatherapy. She is also a composer. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts

The Brain, Heart & Sound Therapy

T

by Danielle Dvorak

here is a 12,000-year-old belief that sound and music can heal us. This is prevalent in many cultures all over the globe, and especially indigenous ones. Our current culture is rediscovering this, much to our benefit. Recent research has shown that 60 to 65 percent of muscle cells in the heart are “brain” cells (ganglia). The human heart creates an electromagnetic field that extends out at least 8 to 12 feet from the body; an ECG reading can be taken up to 3 feet away from the body. The brain feeds on the emotional responses from the heart resulting from events. Stress is a major health concern today, more than any other time in recorded history. In fact, 66 percent or more of all doctor visits in the U.S. are stress-related—and this is a conservative number. Research shows that sound therapy is an effective treatment for stress, primarily as a relaxation therapy. Studies proved that music could relieve anxiety in cancer patients, pre- and post-operative patients and more. Sound, and its accompanying vibrations, serve as natural painkillers; clear our energy field; and can facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual transformation. Sound and vibration have been scientifically proven through a number of studies to be effective in treating many conditions including hypertension, depression, cancer, stress, sleep-related issues, insomnia, ADHD and more. How does sound actually work on the brain and body? During our waking state, the typical frequency of our brain waves is that of Beta. This is the busy mind that Buddhists refer to as the “Monkey Mind”, because it jumps around like an untrained monkey. Sound tools, such as gongs, Tibetan Singing Bowls and a few other analog instruments, entrain the brain to move into the deeper Alpha, and sometimes Theta, states. These are the frequencies that induce a calm clarity of mind, encourage intuition and allow for deep meditative and peaceful states. This is all achieved primarily through the brain moving into Alpha state and triggering a parasympathetic dominance in the nervous system. When the parasympathetic becomes dominant over the sympathetic nervous system, blood pressure goes down, heart rate slows and blood circulation focuses more into the brain and viscera, less to the extremities. This is the “rest, relax and rejuvenate” state of being, opposite of “fight, flight or freeze” where most of us spend much of our waking hours. The power of these sounds lies in their ability to delicately shift and align energy in an intentional manner. This assists the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energies in moving toward harmonious alignment. When these energies are aligned, the resulting body state makes us an ideal environment for healing.

ames are unique. They’re intended to identify a specific person, place or thing. So how do names even come into being? Creativity and imagination can come into play when naming something. Sometimes names can represent a quality or a descriptor of the person, place or thing. Parents have become imaginative when naming children—Apple, North, Basil, Cedar and Arkin are just a few names that children today have been given. Parents want their children to be unique. Some names, more than others, need to be unique, especially where medicine is concerned. Different medications cannot possibly share a name. Imagine the confusion for doctors, pharmacists, developers and patients if some drugs had the same name, or similar. Ustekinumab is a medication for treating rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic 34

arthritis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Talimogene Laherparepvec is a medication that is for treating melanoma lesions, and Ixabepilone is a drug used during the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. These names are difficult to pronounce, making them mysterious and perhaps a bit scary. Poison Dwarf, One-Eyed Jamaican, Ghost Train Haze #9 and Crouching Tiger Hidden Alien are a few of the names given to marijuana strains. Why is it that medicines have such strange names? There are prescription medications that have very similar names, having just two or three letters difference in the spelling. These drugs may treat specific conditions, and if the prescription is not read correctly because of the similarities, some severe reactions, including death can occur. Drugs being mis-prescribed is the most prevalent error in healthcare, according to the Food and Drug Adminis-

tration, and thousands of people die every year because of it. In the pharmaceutical industry, a drug, or medicine, typically has three names: First is the chemical name, which is the actual makeup of the chemical formula; The generic name of a drug is given when a pharmaceutical company, other than the original developer, begins to make the same drug, typically after the patent expires; The commercial name of a drug is what’s seen on the shelves in a store. Because each drug has three names, and each of the names have to be unique and original to any other drug on the market, the task of naming drugs is paramount. With thousands of drugs on the market, it’s no wonder that the names become more and more difficult to pronounce. The FDA reviews over 500 new drug names a year, ensuring that the name is unique enough so it’s not to be mistaken for another. It remains top secret and a mystery as to how pharmaceutical companies come up with their commercial drug names. However, it’s a fairly simple process for marijuana breeders to name their new strains. Although still a daunting task, the naming of marijuana strains is a far simpler process than stringing random letters and Greek and Latin roots together. Some marijuana strains are named for their aroma—lavender, diesel and skunk, to name a few. Others have been named after a favorite actor, band or even a delectable sweet treat. Some marijuana breeders have named strains after their dog or college roommate. Just two decades ago there was no limit as to how new strains were named. Prior to this, and long before the first dispensary, marijuana strains were often named for the geographic region where it

was grown. Panama Red, Maui Wowie and Thai Stick were some of the original pages 34-44 strain names. As marijuana became more widespread around the world, and cultivated under specific climates, the plants changed. Marijuana breeders would create plants using two and sometimes three different parent plants. These hybrids were developed so that the plant would thrive in many different ecosystems. Marijuana farmers and breeders experimented with many hybrids, combining the best attributes from multiple plants into a single new strain. Like pharmaceuticals, the names of these strains had to be unique. With ever-growing research into the chemical components of the marijuana plant, hundreds of new strains are being grown, and they all need to be named. Some strains are being named by combining part of each of the parent plants’ names, giving it a lineage that can be traced back to one individual strain. Some strains, undoubtedly, will continue to get odd, bizarre and sometimes scary names. For new patients walking into a dispensary for the first time, it can be intimidating, but looking at the names of different strains of marijuana can be even more uncomfortable, especially when trying to see them as medicine. Names like Blue Crack and Shark Bite wouldn’t typically be a name someone would presume to be a medication, but they are. Like the strange and difficult names of some pharmaceutical drugs, medicinal marijuana has its own unique spin on names. But what’s really in a name? Perhaps Shakespeare said it best through his character, Juliet, during a flirtatious exchange with Romeo: “A rose by any other name, would smell as sweet.” The names that are given to medicine, be it a pharmaceutical or a strain of marijuana, can be frightening. What’s important, however, is the composition and medicinal components of the medicine, not the name. A medicine that helps with high cholesterol could be named Edgar Magic or Ezetimibe; it really doesn’t matter what the name of the medicine is as long as it is effective, and better still, as long as it is natural plant medicine.

PLANT MEDICINE FOR MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS:

Every woman will go through menopause. Some have a more difficult time than others. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often used as a treatment for those women who suffer with terrible symptoms. According to the Global Healing Center, hormone replacement therapy has risks. Blood clots, breast and ovarian cancer and stroke are just a few of the possible side effects of HRT. There are risks when taking any type of pharmaceutical. So what’s a woman to do when she just can’t deal with the extreme fatigue, hot flashes, heart palpitations and anxiety that accompany menopause and want to find a healthier way to cope? Thankfully, there are remedies that can help with these unpleasant symptoms without side effects or risks. Kava can help ease anxiety during perimenopause. Sage tea can reduce the severity and length of a hot flash. Motherwort can help ward off scary heart palpitations. Yarrow can help with the irregular and sometimes heavy periods that can occur when transitioning. Remember that before starting any alternative medicine, it is necessary to do the footwork and research. Every woman is different and what might work for some may not work for others, but Mother Nature has a medicine cabinet full of natural options for almost any symptom.

Cannabis for Mental Health

M

any Arizona patients visit a medical marijuana dispensary looking for a cannabis strain that will help with their mental health, in addition to their qualifying condition. Common concerns include grogginess, lack of focus, depression and inability to cope with everyday tasks. Others want to boost their mental acuity and become more positive in their thoughts. Jessica, a Budtender at SAINTS Dispensary, says that “patients often ask for something to help with clearing up negative thoughts.” A strain that she often recommends is Race Fuel, a sativa that

SAINTS grows. Other common concerns that patients want relief from include: depression, anxiety, increased energy, focus and concentration. A patient visiting SAINTS mentioned that she loved Pineapple Express, because it is “strong and helpful to keep me focused on the task at hand.” Tucson SAINTS Dispensary grows several strains that will help these common problems. Many strains that boost energy and help with mental issues are Sativa or Hybrid strains, due to their stimulating effect on the mind, making patients feel more positive, happy and motivated. Katy Estrada, Grow Inventory Manager, says, “Strawberry Cough is one of my favorite sativa dominant strains that we grow. Not only does it smell and taste like actual strawberries, but the overall effect of this strain is what I love. Dealing with generalized anxiety disorder can sometimes make it difficult to find a sativa strain that works. With Strawberry Cough, I don’t get thoughts of paranoia or anxiety. It actually helps with my anxiety. The overall effect provides me with uplifting euphoria and a focused mind, while also feeling energized and alert.” A patient has said, “Strawberry Cough and Sour Diesel both help treat my ADD/ADHD and give me a major burst of energy in the morning.” Estrada also states, “Pineapple Express is a great strain that provides the perfect blend of calmness and alertness. It helps to keep the mind at ease while also bringing out creativity and a nice energetic buzz. It’s a great strain for stress and depression.” As more and more research continues, it is evident that medical marijuana helps to effectively treat many problems in the field of mental health. ESSENTIAL OILS AND PET HEALTH: Essential oils are finally getting the respect they deserve. Pure, natural and oh-so-aromatic, essential oils have been shown to help in the treatment of many illnesses and diseases of the body, mind and spirit. Sometimes in the excitement of trying something new, even if it is a naturally based plant product, the effects on pets can be overlooked. There are a number of articles and studies that warn pet owners of the use of essential oils in the home, whether using it topically or in a diffuser, because they may be harmful to the animal. These warnings are controversial, especially because people can post almost anything on the web, whether based in fact or not. According to dōTerra, a leading manufacturer of essential oils, using them can help with a well-rounded health regimen for pets. They do state, however, that not all essential oils are alike. Many of the reports that caution pet owners about diffusing oils at home are based on oils that have fillers and are not pure. Even some essential oils on the market that claim to be 100 percent natural may contain substances that are toxic to animals. dōTerra advises that when using essential oils around pets, be certain that the oils are of the highest quality and have gone through third party testing and are CPTG, or Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. Remember that animals have millions more olfactory receptors than their owners and can be sensitive to strong smells. Less is more in this case. Using just several drops of oil in a water-based diffuser is best.

MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS Beyond Buttons and Portabellas by April Thompson

A

handful of mushrooms a day just might keep the doctor at bay, according to a mounting body of research providing powerful evidence of the fungal kingdom’s abilities to promote health and fight disease. “Mushrooms are pretty spectacular. All edible species benefit the immune system and together, support just about every system in the human body,” says Stepfanie Romine, an Asheville, North Carolina, health coach and author of Cooking With Healing Mushrooms: 150 Delicious Adaptogen-Rich Recipes that Boost Immunity, Reduce Inflammation and Promote Whole Body Health. When Robert Beelman started doing nutritional research on mushrooms 20 years ago, they were touted for what they didn’t have: fat, calories, sugar, gluten and cholesterol. “Today, we can talk about all the good things they contain: fiber, protein,

vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other important micronutrients,” says the director of the Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health at Penn State University. Beelman’s research has focused on several micronutrients that are bountiful in mushrooms, including the amino acid ergothioneine, an antioxidant not found in significant amounts in any other plant-based food source. Ergothioneine levels decrease with age, and larger drops are associated with cognitive impairment, he says. Several large epidemiological studies in Japan and Singapore have significantly correlated higher mushroom consumption with decreased rates of dementia. Countries where residents eat larger amounts of mushrooms also enjoy a higher average life expectancy, even after controlling for other variables, says Beelman. Lion’s mane is one variety known to protect cognitive health; it stimulates nerve growth factor, a protein that promotes healthy brain cells. “Lion’s mane is a cognitive enhancer, and it helps creativity, motivation and memory, as well as brain function,” Romine says.

Ancient Health Aids

Cordyceps and reishi mushrooms are also adaptogens—botanicals used for centuries in Asian medicine to help the body adapt to stresses, regulate bodily functions and support the immune and adrenal systems, according to Romine. Turkey tail is one such medicinal mushroom, a longtime treatment for cancer and other diseases in Asia. The tree-based fungus contains polysaccharide-K (PSK), that is believed to inhibit cancer cell growth and repair immune cell damage after chemotherapy. “Medicinal mushrooms have been approved adjuncts to standard cancer treatments in Japan and China for more than 30 years and have an extensive clinical history of safe use”, either alone or combined with radiation or chemotherapy, according to a literature review published by the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute. Oyster mushrooms, another fungal superstar, contain cholesterol-lowering lovastatin, plentiful B vitamins and up to 30 percent protein, according to Paul Stamets, one of the world’s leading mushroom authorities. Oysters are also the most easily digestible mushroom, according to mycologist and herbalist Christopher Hobbs, author of Medicinal Mushrooms:

More Than a Pizza Topping There are myriad creative ways to incorporate mushrooms into a diet, says Romine, who recommends aiming for a half-cup daily cooked serving. “Mushrooms are nature’s sponges, and will take on the flavor of any sauce, so start simply and add sauces sparingly.” She suggests sautéing mushrooms with a neutral oil, then adding wine or sherry and finishing with fresh herbs. Cooking with wine can help unlock the beneficial compounds the fungi contain, says Romine. Fresh or dried culinary mushrooms like oysters, shiitakes or maitakes can also be great additions to morning meals like savory oatmeal or tofu scrambles. Powdered mushroom extracts, available online or in health stores, are an easy way to infuse meals with fungi’s beneficial properties. They mix well into everything from raw desserts and baked goods to teas and smoothies. Whole mushrooms that are tough, like reishi and chaga, can be boiled to extract the healthful elements and consumed as a tea or used for soup broth. Romine says raw mushrooms are not as flavorful, digestible or nutritional as cooked. While a mushroom-rich diet can help protect and promote health, Romine cautions that they are not a cure-all or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. To address specific health concerns, she recommends working with a dietician or clinical herbalist to develop appropriate and effective ways to incorporate mushrooms into a health regimen. CANNABIS CORNER:

Delectable Edibles

T

here are many marijuana edibles on the market and more are being developed every day. Like food in general, people have preferences when it comes to candies, mints, brownies, soda, sparkling water, cookies and even ice cream, to name just a few, that are medicinal. Patients are curious about the taste of these delectables, and again, this will be a preference. Some people love tomatoes, while others do not. It’s the same thing when it comes to edible medicine. A brownie from one manufacturer may taste just like grandma’s—making it hard to detect the cannabis ingredient. Another company’s brownie may have a strong and pungent taste of the plant, and some people like that. Taste does matter when it comes to medicating. Choose the one that’s best for the individual palate. Some edibles are produced and then sprayed with the medicine. Other products are cooked and made by incorporating the medicine into the edible. For the beginner, this type of edible is the way to start. A strong taste of marijuana may deter a patient from trying it again, or from trying another type of plant medicine. Tru-Infusion Kitchens produce their edibles by infusing the medicine into the product. The edibles come in THC-infused, CBD-infused or a hybrid containing both. Visit TruInfusion.com for a full list of products. Tru-Infusion edibles can be purchased at Earth’s Healing Dispensary, conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., Tucson. On Air with Cannabis Kid and Belle Star Weedsday Wednesday Radio Show Hosts by Jeffrey Green

V

oted best certification center four years in a row, Tumbleweeds Health Center also produces and airs an online radio show featuring Cannabis Kid and Belle Star, every Wednesday morning from 8 to 9 a.m. Here’s what the on-air personalities of Weedsday Wednesday had to say during an interview.

How did the show get started?

BELLE STAR: It was seven years ago this past March when we started the show. I’ve been a fan of talk radio and funny morning commute shows on AM radio for many years. After Tumbleweeds opened its doors, I thought it would be a great idea to start a morning radio show about cannabis. I watched a lot of videos about the laws, regulations and benefits of cannabis. I started to write down the names of the major players in the industry and decided to start inviting them to be a guest on the show.

Where is the show broadcasted from? Tucson Edition

CANNABIS KID: Our guests call in as well because they’re from all over the country. It does make it more comfortable for everybody. BS: We do have some local guests come into the studio to join us as well.

Why a show about cannabis?

CK: What we get to do as hosts of the show is hear people’s experiences. Cannabis wasn’t always able to be talked about, but it is now. Knowing that we’re able to help share these people’s success stories with other people, so that they can understand that they don’t have to live in pain. It all comes down to one thing: we need a show like this, people need it.

Where are your listeners from?

BS: We started broadcasting the show in 42

front of a live audience at the Health Center, but have now moved to an undisclosed location with no in-person live audience, but with many live interactions from listeners through call-ins and blogs.

BS: We can track our listeners. We have approximately 1,200 downloads a month.

NaturalTucson.com

Why is this important for listeners?

CK: For so long it’s been a confusing cycle, and society and the media play a huge part on how we view and use cannabis. It was illegal and against the law and people want to uphold the law. That becomes such a hard thing because it makes people feel better, but they’ve been told that they’re supposed to do that. They’re expected to continue feeling sick and in pain and not be able to use something that can make them feel better. BS: Our listeners really appreciate the news, so we read news articles from all over the U.S. and across the world. CK: When we don’t have a guest on the show, we have some great discussions on how to incorporate cannabis into your day to day life. We love to share people’s stories and personal growth. We try to let the people who don’t want to smoke cannabis know that they don’t have to smoke cannabis or get high from it. There are a lot of different ways to get it into the body. Juicing is a huge way and is becoming more popular because you can use the whole plant without getting the high from it. People are able to get the acids from the plant which are beneficial for health. Adding a few leaves to a morning smoothie is a great way to get the medicine into the body without feeling the psychoactive effects. People are hungry for this information and hungry to be out of pain. BS: We throw out recipes like how to make cannabis coffee or a little treat edible. CK: We talk about the science of it and about each of the cannabinoids and what each one does. People need and want to know about how cannabis is becoming mainstream.

SECTION pages 34-44

BS: A noteworthy guest we’ve had on in the past is Dr. Lester Grinspoon from Harvard, who was one of Carl Sagan’s best friends. Set out to research that cannabis was bad for you, but what he discovered is that it’s the exact opposite. For Grinspoon and Sagan, cannabis became a way for them to expand their minds. They had very spiritual and conscious conversations.

Jeffrey Green, M.A., has taught grades K-12 as well as at the University of Arizona. Currently a freelance writer, Reiki Master and Animal Reiki Practitioner, Green enjoys educating the public on natural and holistic alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs.

CK: It’s just how it makes the mind work. It’s like putting on a pair of glasses. We all walk around with a little bit of blur from what we don’t understand, but with the cannabis it changes perspective and makes things a little clearer. While you’re in pain, it’s hard to focus and makes things even blurrier. When you’re able to get out of that pain and begin to see clearer, that’s when the enhancement factors of cannabis comes into play.

Have you thought about taking the show on the road? Who have you had on the show? BS: We’ve had hundreds of guests on the show. They include people from law enforcement, undercover LEAP officers, lawyers, judges, scientists, doctors, patients, authors, quantum physicists, metaphysicians and even children who suffer from cancer and epilepsy. Doug Fine was one of the very first guests. He’s the author of a few great books on the hemp industry: Hemp Bound, Too High to Fail and First Legal Harvest. CK: We got a chance to interview Kyle Turley. BS: Tumbleweeds even carries Kyle’s CBD products. He’s a retired NFL player for the Saints. CK: He’s had his fair share of blows to the head, and has been able to move away from harmful pharmaceuticals and into natural medicine. He’s been able to take his life back with a much clearer head. He relates to many other people who’ve been looking for something for pain other than pharmaceuticals. 44

Tucson Edition

BS: We’ve done live shows out in the world at different events, such as the Southwest Cannabis Conference where we interviewed some people. We always say that we’re going to get an RV and hit the road.

Where do you see the industry going?

BS: As far as legislation, my opinion is that we should all be able to grow. We should all be able to own a cannabis business if that’s what we choose to do. I do see some changes happening down the road, but some of the greed in some of the dispensaries are not looking at the patient or the person as a whole, so some of the legislation that has been put forward is not really for the best interest of the patient. I don’t know if cannabis will be legalized here in Arizona in 2020. It depends on the initiative and how they write it. Legalization for recreational use will happen at some point. Know Your Fungi Many beneficial mushrooms are available in the wild, and some exclusively so. Foraging for them can be rewarding, but proceed with caution; some edible mushrooms may have deadly lookalikes, so only forage with the help of a trained expert. Health food stores and online vendors are good sources of mushroom powders or extracts, which have a long shelf life. Look for a manufacturer of 100 percent organic mushroom extracts and supplements. Many farmers’ markets also carry specialty mushrooms like king oysters, lion’s mane or others not easily found in grocery stores. Not all mushrooms are created equal. Button mushrooms and others in the Agaricus family are lowest in micronutrients like ergothioneine, with porcinis in the Boletus family yielding the highest, according to Robert Beelman, director of the Center for Plant and Mushroom Foods for Health at Penn State University. Don’t expect magic from mushrooms, cautions author Stepfanie Romine; like most lifestyle changes or holistic treatments, it can take some months to yield results.
