At Tucson’s Transformational Medicine, personalized wellness plans combine dietary changes, herbal supplements and lifestyle adjustments, tailored to each man’s unique needs. The team at Transformational Medicine focuses on educating men about the signs and effects of hormonal imbalances and the importance of seeking timely treatment. Preventive health is a cornerstone of the practice. Regular screenings and evaluations are vital for early detection of hormonal issues, empowering men to take control of their health and improve their overall quality of life.

Embracing a naturopathic approach allows men to move beyond quiet desperation to a life of informed, proactive participation in their health. Let Transformational Medicine guide you toward thriving with optimal hormonal balance.

WARMING CLIMATE MAY CHANGE FORESTS

Trees have internal clocks that keep track of when to go dormant. Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council studied the effect of rising temperatures on lenga beech saplings, a deciduous tree native to the cool temperatures of the Andes Mountains. The researchers found that higher temperatures altered the genes that regulate the tree’s internal clock. These genetic oscillations resulted in smaller trees. Elsewhere, misaligned temperatures have caused other tree species to go into out-of-season dormancy. Researchers warn that future temperature increases could dramatically change the composition of forests in the Andean-Patagonian region and other vital areas around the world.

WORLD’S OLDEST FOREST DISCOVERED IN ENGLAND

Cambridge University scientists have discovered a fossil forest in southwest England featuring plants with a woody root system and “twiglets” that are estimated to be 390 million years old. Their discovery was published in the Journal of the Geological Society. This forest is 4 million years older than an ancient forest discovered in 2019 in an abandoned quarry in Cairo, New York, and precedes dinosaurs by 150 million years. The oldest trees appeared approximately 500 million years ago, but it was the advent of forests that reduced global CO2 levels to near-modern levels, while supplying the Earth with oxygen, thus paving the way for more complex life forms.

Brain Health for Military Veterans and First Responders

Many combat veterans return from deployment and are diagnosed with PTSD and TBI. Some veterans are subsequently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, dementia, ALS and other neurodegenerative conditions. Large population studies demonstrate that combat veterans are predisposed to neurodegenerative conditions. This correlates with exposure to repeated blasts (a blast injury is equivalent to multiple concussions) and other concussive forces, as well as toxic exposures. Many first responders also experience those injuries.

When the cause of symptoms is blast forces and toxicity, the treatment may be different. Trauma and toxicity may affect testosterone and other hormone levels, which also affects brain health.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used with positive outcomes in patients with neurodegenerative conditions. Once a neurodegenerative process has begun, it is critical to stop the progressive worsening and begin a healing process. HBOT is the only therapy that has been shown to heal a brain injury condition. Treating neurodegenerative conditions with medications does not result in healing, but only temporary symptomatic management. The brain can always be rewired, re-networked, retrained—but biological physiological healing is necessary to maintain brain health.

The website TreatNow.org is a good reference for published research using HBOT to treat brain injury. The book The Oxygen Revolution by Dr. Paul Harch is a good resource to explain the process.

Neurologist Carol L. Henricks, M.D., of NorthStar Hyperbaric, in Tucson, is screening post-9/11 military veterans and first responders with diagnoses of neurodegenerative conditions for participation in therapy. Connect at 520-229-1238 or NorthStarHBOT.com.

Release Trapped Energies with the Emotion Code Method of Clearing

We move through life without ever considering what all the emotions are that we feel, and that the effect of them can be causing physical difficulties. Within our subconscious, we store unprocessed emotions in the form of trapped energies. Negative emotions obstruct the flow within us and prevent natural functioning, while positive ones support and heal.

Because we are often not aware of the many unprocessed emotions, we can use the Emotion Code to find them in the subconscious. It is easily looked up, and once found, they can be released without even re-visiting them, whether they occurred in childhood or recently. It is quick and freeing. With love and gratitude, and guidance from above, the trapped emotions are released, never to come back.

This method was developed by Dr. Brad Nelson, and has shown remarkable results. It verifies that trapped emotions are frequently the cause of major or minor physical difficulties due to blockages of energies unprocessed. When we process emotions, we look at them, recognize them as not wanted, and shift to a positive outlook, letting them go.

With the Emotion Code, clearing works within seconds. A traumatic event may have many trapped emotions, but they can all be cleared in due course. Trapped emotions can have many causes, and even be inherited. They can all be released.

Maria Kingsley, Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, EFT Practitioner and hypnotherapist, provides Emotion Code services in person and remotely. Connect at 520-780-0170, KadaKingsley@msn. com or Maria-Kingsley.com.

Men’s Health 101

While focusing on men’s health, the following are basic needs to stay healthy and enjoy your summer.

Research shows the number one thing to do for our health is exercise. This could include: stretching (yoga, flexibility classes), strength training (Pilates, weight training, resistance bands) or cardio (running, cycling, swimming). Get out and move. Try stretching daily, practicing yoga once a week, weight workouts twice a week, Pilates once a week and get three cardio sessions per week of 30-60 minutes.

Next is diet. Eat food rich in vitamins, protein and fiber. There are many types of diets out there and all have their benefits. The greatest insults to our health come from dairy, wheat, sugar and food additives. Medications can also have negative effects on your gut biome. We need protein for repair and brain function, and fruits and vegetables provide nutrients and fiber. We need essential oils for joints and the brain. A poor diet will affect your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from your food and eventually lead to health challenges. Water is also important; however, as temperatures rise and we consume more water, we need to add more electrolytes via fruit or sport drinks.

Check in with your mental health. One must enjoy life! We have to find things that give us joy, whether it’s training, sports, church, clubs, giving back, pets, etc. Try to smile and laugh a lot. If you are having a hard time enjoying life, please seek help from professionals, friends and pastors. You deserve to be happy.

Connect with Nathan S. Conlee, DC, CCSP, DACNB, FACFN, FIACA, LAc, CKTP, at PerformanceNeurology.com. See ad, page 23.

Artist Barbara Rogers: Her Creative Calling

Since getting her Master of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley, acclaimed artist Barbara Rogers has made a habit of reinvention. Her artistic style and subject matter have shifted during her illustrious career as a result of life-changing experiences.

Born in Ohio, Rogers attended public schools, and went to a vocational high school that had a commercial art curriculum. She received her college education at Ohio State, where she majored in Art Education and went on to graduate school at Berkeley. An avant-garde trailblazer, during a time when a woman’s place was in the home, she was the first female hired

to teach art on the faculty as an Adjunct Professor at The University of California, Berkeley.

In 1982, Rogers went to Hawaii to photograph the fabulous botanical gardens there to get more material for her paintings. While she was exploring Oahu, hurricane winds exceeding 90 miles per hour caused everything to become chaos— fragmented objects flying by her, including flowers, trees and pieces of houses.

When Rogers returned home, she had an epiphany, and knew she could no longer paint sharp focused realism. She abandoned realism in favor of abstract

expressionism. She also traded in her acrylics and an airbrush for a return to brushes and oil paint.

To this day, her work depicts abstract fragments of plants, particularly surreal botanicals. Rogers’ prolific art and her vibrant lifestyle are memorialized in the book, Barbara Rogers: The Imperative of Beauty, published by Hudson Hills Press. In 1990, she moved to Arizona and became a tenured Professor of Art at the University of Arizona.

At 87, Rogers is still creating art and loving life. Her most recent endeavor is opening a studio in downtown Tucson at the Firestone Building. Her studio assistant, artist Lauren Steinert, feels honored to collaborate with Rogers. “I’m so fortunate. She is an incredible mentor, and her groundbreaking career opened options for the next generation of women artists,” she opines.

Q&A with Barbara Rogers

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small village named Newcomerstown in northeastern Ohio. When I was six years old, we moved to Canton, Ohio.

When and why did you move to Tucson?

I didn’t even know Tucson existed until a friend of mine who I taught with and was friends with, artist Robert Colscott, got hired here and really talked it up. I was invited to be a guest speaker and visiting artist at the University of Arizona. In 1990, I got an offer for a professorship with tenure, which included free tuition for my son. I took out a second mortgage on my house in California to buy a house in Tucson with a three-car garage, which could be my studio.

What do you remember liking about art from an early age?

I wouldn’t use the term “like” or “love”.

It was nonverbally deep, and it was what came most naturally. I don’t remember why, but I wanted to draw women. My drawings started out with women’s undergarments, the bra, panties, garter belt and on top of that a full length slip with a dress on top of everything. In fourth grade, the boys said, “Just do the woman with her bra and panties and we’ll trade you for a candy bar.” And they wanted all the women to be smoking, or holding cigarettes.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard.

What music do you listen to when painting?

Jazz. When the music flows, so does the paint.

How did wisdom from a rabbi influence your artistic style?

When I was a graduate student at Berkeley, there was a job opening at Temple Emmanuel for an art teacher. I commuted on a motorcycle there, and then changed into hose and heels. The cantor asked me, “What religion are you?” When I said, evangelical, he told me I had to meet with the rabbi.

I met with the rabbi for 15 minutes, and it was life changing. The rabbi told me, “We Jews do not believe in heaven or hell. When we/you are alive on earth, you create your own heaven and hell. What is your idea of heaven? Think about what your paradise looks like, and paint that,” he suggested.

I left there feeling like a boulder had been lifted off my shoulders; what could I do to make my whole life look like heaven? That’s been my goal. That’s how I ended up learning how to use an airbrush and to make stories of what heaven might look like appear believable. When I teach, I try to get my students to think about what would be in their heaven.

Please tell us about your new studio.

After I injured myself in a fall at the house, I decided to sell it. The garage studio was full, and I knew I couldn’t leave there if I didn’t have a place for my work. I called an artist friend, Jim Waid, and told him my situation. He mentioned an artist, Rand Carlson, who had a studio in the Firestone Building, and that he was moving to New Mexico. I saw the space, and said, “Oh, my goodness. This is it.”

Then I had to find a place to live. My house had a fabulous garden, and I was delighted to move to an apartment at Atria Bell Court Gardens off Wilmot on Carondolet. It was designed by architect Merritt Starkweather, who designed the Arizona Inn.

The lush landscaping is mature, gorgeous, and meticulously cared for. They make you happy and comfortable, and they have a concierge desk open 24/7.

I get up, fix breakfast in my gorgeous apartment and drive to the studio around 9am. I leave at 4pm, go home, take a nap, and have a dinner party every night with accomplished friends. I just might be the role model for the concept of independent living for artists and creative seniors.

Where else can people buy your art?

Gebert Contemporary Art Gallery in Scottsdale and Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri. I plan to have public hours on Sunday afternoons at my studio after this summer.

You’ve accomplished so much. What are you most excited about now?

Being accepted into the Archive of Visual Arts at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. They have a wonderful new director, Sara Swayden. There will be an exhibition event open to the public next fall.

Do you have a piece of advice you’ve been given that guides you?

Get a mentor. I think it’s a piece that is missing, even at the university level. The only way you learn a field is to do the grunt work for an artist and ask yourself, “Is this something you could love?”

What’s your favorite thing to do in Tucson in your time off?

Eat great food and have lengthy conversations with as many of the smart people I know as possible. I love my friends. If I have made deposits in my karma bank, spending time with friends is my withdrawal—a payback.

Where would you like to take your next vacation?

A week in a beautiful hotel in New York City with my two grandsons.

What is your favorite food?

Green vegetables cooked by a chef like the one at Anello’s. Grilled and seasoned with expensive olive oil. The grilled romaine lettuce at The Cork is incredible, and so is the broccoli at Tito and Pep.

I think we should all design our lives. Don’t accept anything as a given. Step back, and say, “What exactly is it I want? What steps do I have to take to achieve it?” Think about your idea of the perfect life, and what you need to do, within your means, to create it.

Understand that your very existence is a miracle. How can you make your existence as beautiful as possible? Happiness is catching. Dress as if you’re part of everyone’s landscape—be a good visual. Everything is temporary, we’re all passing through. Make your life become a joy.

Food: Too Good to Waste

When your mother told you to clean your plate, you may not have realized that by doing so, you were helping save our planet. As it happens, reducing food waste is one of the simplest and most effective actions we can take to reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change.

Food waste is a big deal. In the U.S. alone, each year somewhere around one-third of all food produced goes uneaten. Food waste is now the largest component of what goes into landfills. In fact, Tucson city officials estimate that food scraps make up a whopping 20 percent of the city’s residential waste. Food waste occurs at almost every aspect of the supply chain, from the blemished crops that go unharvested in the field, to the billions of pounds of food thrown away by supermarkets and grocery stores, to the

uneaten food at the all-you-can-eat buffet that is discarded at the end of the day.

Significantly, when food is discarded, all the resources (water, energy, land and labor) used in producing, processing, transporting and storing it are also wasted, and that amounts to a lot of wasted resources and also, not insignificantly, money. It is estimated that in the U.S., food waste amounts to the loss of about $162 billion a year.

Perhaps surprisingly, consumers are responsible for more wasted food than farmers, grocery stores or any other part of the food chain. The lettuce that went bad, the leftovers you never got around to eating and that mysterious something growing in a container at the back of your refrigerator will likely end up in the landfill where it will all rot and in the process, release harmful greenhouse gasses—most particularly, methane, which is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

The good news is that by making some small shifts, such as those below, in how you shop, store and prepare food, you can reduce food waste in your home and save money and the planet.

Smart Shopping

• Before heading out to the grocery store, preplan meals for the next few days or for the week. Always, always shop with a list and stick to it.

• When possible, buy perishable items in small quantities and seek out stores that sell items like beans and nuts in bulk bins.

Understand those “use-by” dates.

Smart Storage

• Storing your food properly means it will stay fresh longer and maximizes the time you have to use it before it spoils.

• When thinking about how to store fresh fruits and vegetables at home, a good rule of thumb is to pay attention to how it is displayed at the grocery store: if it’s refrigerated at the store, refrigerate it at home; if not, don’t.

• Designate and label as ‘Eat First” a section of your refrigerator for leftovers and perishable fruits and vegetables.

• For longer storage, befriend your freezer and visit it often.

Smart Prep

• Save time by batch cooking meals that can be stored in the refrigerator or in the freezer for later.

• Reinvent your leftovers.

• Rather than peeling carrots, cucumbers and other fruits and vegetables, leave the peels on and give them a good scrub. If you decide to peel, save the scraps for vegetable stocks.

• Learn how to preserve your food.

Crafting Sacred Space

Making Room for Masculine Self-Discovery & Wellness

In the realm of self-care and spiritual exploration, the notion of sacred space often conjures images of serene retreats seemingly tailored for the feminine soul. However, men, too, thrive when they have a consciously crafted place to just be. Creating a personal sacred space at home can serve as a powerful way to nurture overall wellness. Think of it as an energetic sanctuary, a fortified oasis where you can regularly retreat from the overwhelming noise of the outer world and reconnect with yourself.

Sacred space is simply a space you create that makes you feel connected, safe and calm. And it’s an often-overlooked form of self-care.

This is, of course, an idea rooted in ancient cultures and traditions, often playing a vital role in rites of passage and wellness practices for men. From the kiva chambers of Puebloan tribes to the contemplative zendos of Buddhist monasteries, these hallowed sanctuaries offered pathways for men to journey inward, fortifying their integrity, purpose and sense of wholeness when the external world became too loud.

By creating your own sacred space at home, you aren’t just building a fancy meditation corner. It is a practical and scientifically validated way to nurture holistic well-being from the inside out.

The first step is to choose a physical location. Sacred space can be created anywhere—a corner of your home, a secluded spot outdoors or even a designated room or altar. Choose a location that resonates with you and feels conducive to introspection and reflection. Consider factors such as privacy and comfort when selecting your sacred space.

Clear your space energetically. You may ritually purify the area you’ve chosen for your sanctuary. Many find that smudging with sacred herbs like white sage or palo santo provides a powerful energy-cleansing ritual. As the fragrant smoke swirls, visualize it sweeping away any stagnant or dense vibes, creating a purified atmosphere for revitalizing energies and intentions.

Remove any clutter. This is not the place for random things to be tossed. Allow only objects and design elements that serve a purposeful function or elevate your spirit to remain. This space should distill down to what nurtures and supports your peace of mind, growth and well-being.

Personalize your sanctuary. Now comes the part where you find inspiration in what you love and infuse your unique personality into this ritual container. Incorporate artwork, symbols or imagery that evoke a sense of calm and peace and speak to your soul. What looks, feels and smells good to you? Choose objects and art that give you energy and inspire you, perhaps including books, spiritual figurines, incense, meaningful photographs or even special totems or memorabilia from your childhood. It’s all about what is meaningful and evocative for you.

Incorporate both comfort and wildness. Bringing in textured textiles, rugs and floor cushions that invite relaxation and embodied presence can immediately elevate your sanctuary. Consider organic lighting sources like candles or beeswax lamps to create a warm, focused atmosphere.

Anchor the space with natural elements like

live plants, crystals, wood carvings or accents that remind your masculine energy of nature’s primordial rhythms. Studies show that surrounding ourselves with biophilic natural motifs can reduce stress, improve emotional balance, enhance creativity and tap into our innate human affinity for the natural world.

Arrange furnishings and objects with intention, considering how their placement will facilitate your movements, practices and ceremonies within this sacred domain. Seating, lighting and energy flow should seamlessly accommodate both dynamic expression and profound stillness.

Establish rituals and practices. Sacred space invites rituals and ceremony—an opportunity to engage in practices that nourish the mind, body and spirit. Whether it’s meditation, journaling, prayer or movement, establish rituals that resonate with you and help you tap into the deeper parts of you. Maybe you light incense and read a passage in a morning reflection book. Perhaps you sit in a comfy spot and listen to music that stirs your soul. Ask yourself, “What does my soul need right now?” There’s no right way to do this—let your intuition be your guide.

Cultivate presence and stillness. Think of this space of yours as an invitation to slow

down, breathe and be fully present with yourself. Encourage your busy mind to let go of distractions and external pressures, and simply be with whatever arises in the present moment. Over time, the very act of entering your sacred space will have you drop down into a space of conscious contemplation and awareness.

Remember that honoring the space is honoring the self. Your sacred space is a safe domain where you can shed the exhausting masks, roles and ego armor that sap your daily vitality. We all thrive with some form of sanctuary, a home within the storm of existence. Honor this as a refuge where every dimension of your selfhood is granted unconditional belonging—and allow the space to honor and call forth the fullest expression of who you are.

Solving Mental Health Issues in Men

Finding Meaning in Turbulent Times

Many men struggle with mental health issues, often experiencing debilitating emotional turmoil, alone and in silence. Evidence of this suffering can be quantified in a number of ways. An epidemic of “despair deaths” related to alcoholism, substance abuse and suicide is documented to be worse in men than women. According to the U.S. Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention, American males were almost four times more likely to commit suicide than women in 2021. The National Institutes of Health reports overdose mortality rates for opioids and stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine are two to three times greater in men. While men use drugs at higher rates than women, this alone does not explain the gap in overdose deaths.

Loneliness has become such a widespread problem that the U.S. Surgeon General recently called it an epidemic and the World Health Organization noted, “The effect of social isolation and loneliness on mortality is comparable to that of other wellestablished risk factors such as smoking, obesity and physical inactivity.” A 2021 report by the Survey Center on American Life stated that since 1990, the number of men saying they have no close friends has jumped from 3 percent to 15 percent.

Men’s Health and the Pandemic

COVID-19 incurred invisible costs such as increases in loneliness and mental health strain. Because men generally tend to spend less time and energy cultivating meaningful social relationships but still require structure to thrive, the pandemic was particularly destructive to them.

Roughly one out of three men in America under the age of 30 reported having no sex in the last year (a 30-year low), which is an obstacle to building meaningful relationships and families. Men have become not only socially disconnected, but also more vulnerable to following dangerous groups, influencers and others with extreme messaging. Men that fail to attach to partners, communities or careers may grow increasingly resentful and act out with volatility and unrest. An African proverb says, “The

Origins and Causes

According to Gabor Maté, a Canadian physician, author and speaker on addiction, stress and childhood development, “The issue is men’s value has been defined in a very narrow sense, and when the power is taken away from people, people have a loss of agency and loss of control, belonging, meaning and value. Men have become deprived of a sense of meaning and belonging, and that’s a function of the culture we live in.”

Possible Solutions

Men’s Mental Health Advocacy: Shame is the biggest barrier, preventing men from seeking help and expressing vulnerability. We need to talk and stop shaming them.

Male-Specific Mental Health Treatment: Men communicate differently, so counseling must address unexamined feelings.

Research shows that physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression, so sports activities that draw men together such as softball, surfing or martial arts can offer a win-win situation.

Emotional Communication Training: Men need to develop their emotional communication skills, such as how to express themselves and share feelings through language, vulnerability and emotional expression, to deepen relationships. Men can be strong and competitive while also being authentic, vulnerable and emotionally connected.

Maté advises, “Men need to accept their vulnerability and work it through, and not reject it or be ashamed of it. And to let go of,

‘I can’t be self-reflective; I have to be tough,’ and that takes a lot of help and support. Men who come back from war will heal by accepting their vulnerability and spending time in support groups. Another thing we should do is show respect for the courage of those men who choose to explore their vulnerability.”

Embracing Universal Masculinity and Femininity: We must realize there is masculinity and femininity in all of us. Neither masculinity nor femininity is the problem—hatred, oppression and inequality of opportunity are the problems, no matter the gender or ratio of masculine and feminine qualities within the individual.

Defining Healthy Masculinity: Masculine qualities are traditionally thought of as bravery, strength, courage, confidence, ambition, competitiveness, self-reliance and decisiveness. These standards are hard to live up to, so the question is how do we adapt healthy masculinity to be equipped with skills for success in changing times.

Offer Coaching Before Therapy: Because men may be more defensive, less open, less vulnerable and more disconnected from their feelings than women, many will respond to coaching over therapy, which can be a gateway to start thinking about deeper purpose and well-being. A personal development program geared specifically for men to build skills, share support and

figure out how to excel in a changing world of technology and role-confusion may be helpful.

Encourage Inspiration and Purpose: Men need to find purpose by doing something meaningful that inspires them and makes them feel energized and appreciated. The more they feel helpless and stuck in survival mode, the more loneliness grows.

Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo explains how a survival mentality doesn’t allow for meaningful and purposeful pursuit. “Perceived or real threats put you in survival mode, and when you’re in this mode, your limbic system takes over and you’re not thinking about purpose, connection or collaboration (things that can pull you out of this mode); you’re just trying to survive.”

Men’s health needs to become a movement that encourages males to be proud of their masculinity, but also add new skills in emotional communication and vulnerability to find purpose, improve their health and have the best chance for success in turbulent times.

Season of the Sacred Masculine

As we approach midsummer and listen closely, an ancient song can be heard within the verdant heart of the season. The sun is at its peak, working in cosmic collaboration with our fertile Earth, and we find ourselves deep in sustenance with abundant crops and gardens, long-shadowed afternoons and carefree barefoot hours. Our ancient ancestors held lavish celebrations on the summer solstice that included greeting the sunrise and lighting bonfires after dark.

During this sun-dappled hour, it is easy to evoke the leafy-crowned magic of the Green Man mythos and honor the concept of the sacred masculine. The activating principle of yang within the feminine receptive yin, the divine masculine runs through many cultures—from the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva embodying cosmic creation, preservation and destruction to the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent, the powerful, symbolic essence of creation, transformation and renewal.

The sacred masculine can also be glimpsed in our everyday heroes— the men in our lives. Whenever a father passes on the legacy of compassion to his children, protects his own or creates something from nothing, he is mirroring this multicultural, timeless energy. In its purity, the animating masculine force is free of aggression, capable of deep creativity and resplendent with the spark of new ideas. He is a passionate and gentle lover, a strong guardian and an inspired innovator. Saint Francis of Assisi, the Italian Catholic friar, mystic and poet, embodied the sacred masculine, seeing God in the human flesh of our neighbors. His timeless Canticle of the Sun acknowledged the life force and consciousness of the heavenly bodies, the animals and the elements—earth, air, fire and water.

Like the divine feminine, the sacred masculine is, in essence, an archetype that exists in all people, regardless of gender. Taking positive, humble action when needed, healing our father wounds, tapping into the fire of our innate creativity and uniting logic with intuition are all ways to awaken this vital energy that is sorely needed in the world today.

Building Quality Muscle

How Diet and Resistance Training Can Help

Muscles act like metabolic Spanx, holding everything in the body tighter, supporting joints to prevent injuries, keeping bones strong and helping the immune system remain resilient to infection. Skeletal muscle acts as an endocrine-producing organ, supporting a healthy metabolism and balancing hormones. Strong, healthy muscles help us feel better, move more easily and live more powerfully.

Once someone crosses the threshold into their 40s, there is a natural decline in muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. Adults can lose 3 to 8 percent of muscle mass per decade after turning 30, with losses accelerating after 60. Preventing this decline and supporting quality muscle is key. “Muscle can be stimulated largely in two ways: first, through dietary protein, and second, through resistance,” explains Gabrielle Lyon, a board-certified family physician and author of Forever Strong.

Optimal Protein Consumption

The building blocks of protein fall into two categories: essential amino acids, which are necessary nutrients that the body cannot make on its own and must be acquired through dietary intake; and non-essential amino acids, which can be synthesized by the body from carbohydrates and other dietary sources. To promote muscle recovery and development, it is important to consume protein that contains all nine essential amino acids in optimal amounts throughout the day.

More than half of older adults are not getting enough protein, and sarcopenia may increase their need for it. To offset age-related decline, every meal should contain a minimum of 30 grams of protein. Active people, including those that do resistance training, should target one gram of protein per pound of their ideal body weight daily.

The best animal proteins that offer all nine essential amino acids in the right balance include pasture-raised poultry and eggs, wild-caught seafood and grass-fed beef. Plant

proteins often lack one or more crucial amino acid, so vegans or vegetarians should eat a minimum of 40 grams of protein per meal to reach an adequate intake.

Breaking an overnight fast with a proteinpacked breakfast jumpstarts metabolism and provides more sustained energy during the day, fueling morning activities and preventing mid-morning crashes. A protein-rich dinner supports muscle recovery and helps the body rebuild during sleep.

Benefits of Resistance Training

“The most important type of exercise is resistance training as you get older, because you need to build muscle," says Mark Hyman, a functional-medicine doctor whose latest book, Young Forever, explores the secrets to longevity. “Without muscle, you become frail and dysfunctional.” Building muscle can improve the capacity for everyday activities, diminish the likelihood of chronic illnesses and decrease the risk of falls and frailty. Resistance training also improves bone density, metabolic health and overall quality of life.

Resistance-Training Tips

• Target multiple muscle groups simultaneously with compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, rows and overhead presses.

• Focus on lifting the maximum weight manageable while maintaining proper form to avoid injury.

• Gradually increase the resistance or intensity of exercises over time to continually challenge the muscles.

• Aim for two to four weekly resistancetraining sessions. Consistency and

26 Tucson Edition NaturalTucson.com Fit Body

patience are the foundations for lasting strength and muscle-tone improvements.

• Engage all key muscle groups. For the upper body, try bench presses, overhead presses, dumbbell chest presses, pushups, pull-ups, bent-over rows, seated rows and lat pulldowns. To work the hips and thighs, try squats, lunges, deadlifts and step-ups. For core strength, consider planks, Russian twists and bicycle crunches.

• Perform two to four exercises for each muscle group, doing two to four sets for each exercise. Between sets, take 90- to 120-second rest breaks. Aim for eight to 15 repetitions per set.

Rest and Recovery

To prevent injuries or burnout, rest is crucial, allowing muscles to repair and rebuild. Give each muscle group 48 to 72 hours before targeting it again. It is normal to feel sore after a workout, but be mindful of the difference between soreness

and pain. Soreness feels like mild, diffuse discomfort or stiffness and is a normal response to unfamiliar or intense exercise. Sharp, intense or persistent pain, particularly around a joint, indicates potential injury or overstrain.

On rest days, incorporate low-intensity, active-recovery activities like walking, yoga or swimming; try foam rolling, stretching and mobility exercises to improve flexibility and circulation; and consider meditation for mental-health benefits. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep, which promotes tissue repair and growth-hormone release.

Monitoring Progress

• To optimize strategies and identify areas for improvement, regularly measure the circumference of the biceps, chest, thighs, waist and hips.

• Keep track of the amount of weight, repetitions, sets and intensity of every exercise session.

• Track muscle mass and body-fat shifts with a body-composition scale and take consistent photos from various angles to document muscle definition and physique evolution.

Staying the Course

• Adjustments to diet and training programs may be necessary based on changing goals or feedback from tracking methods.

• If progress stalls, adjust training variables such as workout intensity or frequency.

• Use fluctuations in muscle mass or body fat to refine protein intake or overall macronutrient ratios.

Green-Home Design Tips

Healthy Options for a Sustainable Sanctuary

Americans spend about 90 percent of their lives indoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Building and remodeling our homes to be eco-friendly, non-toxic and environmentally safe is more important than ever. Here are a few considerations.

Eco-Safe Planning

Previous industrial activity, legal and illegal dumping of waste material, and even past farming that relied on pesticides, herbicides and fungicides need to be identified before selecting a building site. Developers also need to look at surrounding properties to evaluate the sources of groundwater and locate hazards like electric substations, hightension power lines and cellular towers. Naturally occurring toxins such as radon should also be considered before developing a site.

Ambient Quality

Homes must be as airtight as possible to

ensure efficient temperature regulation, prevent pests, keep out pollutants and withstand varying weather conditions, while also having breathable systems and allowing for proper ventilation. This is achieved by incorporating passive airflow through vents and windows, as well as active systems like air-handling systems that draw in filtered, fresh air and circulate it throughout the home.

Natural building materials such as wood, bamboo, clay, concrete and earth are breathable and produce negative ions that are found in outdoor environments like oceans, forests and waterfalls. A research review in Environmental Science and Pollution Research found that exposure to negative air ions may have a positive effect on amino acid metabolism, which manifests as reduced inflammation and anti-oxidation. Further, an International Journal of Molecular Sciences article noted

that negative air ions are widely used in air cleaning and may relieve dust and mold spore allergies. Good ventilation assists in clearing out positively charged ions.

Toxic mold is a common issue in homes. It is essential to inspect and test for mold during construction and before installing insulation and closing walls. To minimize the likelihood of mold growth, ensure adequate ventilation and properly install equipment, such as air conditioning units, which may contribute to condensation.

Acoustic protection from noise and vibration adds to the overall quality of living spaces. Thoughtful building practices incorporate materials that help block, absorb, mitigate or reduce noise and vibration. These include soundproofing, insulated walls, low emissivity (Low-E) dual-glazed windows, and plaster- and clay-based paint systems.

Environmental Responsibility

Locally sourced materials like clay, limebased mortars and natural stone reduce a home’s carbon footprint by minimizing the need for extensive transportation. Avoid engineered wood, plastic, spray foams, metal, glues and adhesives that contain polymers and formaldehyde, which off-gas toxic chemicals. Some concrete fly ash contains naturally occurring uranium and thorium that have the potential to release radiation.

Incorporate energy-smart technology and appliances, and utilize renewable energy sources like solar power and geothermal climate systems. Select sustainably harvested timber, recycled steel, and products and appliances certified by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. Choose materials and appliances with lower environmental life-cycle costs, prioritizing options that are environmentally friendly in their production and have minimal negative effects when reaching the end of their useful life.

Green homes include water-saving technologies such as rainwater harvesting systems and low-flow toilets and showerheads. They also include water purification systems to reduce the occupant’s exposure to lead, heavy metals, chlorine, and other chemicals and pollutants.

Electrical Systems

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are invisible areas of energy associated with the use of electrical power, as well as natural and manmade types of light. EMF exposure can originate from electrical fields generated by wiring, radio frequencies from cellular and wireless devices, and micro-electrical surge pollution from transformers, motors, power supplies or solar equipment. The International Agency for Research on Cancer evaluated cancer risks from radiofrequency radiation (RFR) and classified it as a possible human carcinogen. A paper in Environmental Research concluded that “there is substantial scientific evidence that RFR causes cancer, endocrinological, neurological and other adverse health effects.” Accounting for these factors in a green build identifies areas to address for mitigation.

Prioritizing natural light and using colors in harmony with nature not only promote sustainability, but also create aesthetically pleasing spaces. Low-E windows allow natural light to enter the home while deflecting harmful ultraviolet rays and infrared light, reducing energy bills and blocking radio frequencies.

Home lighting considerations include light spectrums and intensities, color frequencies and placement decisions, all of which can affect our circadian rhythm and reduce EMF exposure. Newer indoor fixtures mimic the sun by automatically changing color, intensity and frequency throughout the day and night to support our natural body clock.

In a green home, the electrical panel and high-EMF-emitting appliances like the refrigerator are not placed against bedroom walls. Wires are run in single, continuous circuits, without junctions and extensions, to reduce the system’s EMF profile. Internet connections for computers, printers, televisions and game systems are hardwired, which also increase connectivity and speed. A green home’s phone is a landline that improves call clarity and reduces RFR exposure.
