READER TESTIMONIAL: Happy Anniversary! It’s hard to believe I’ve been reading the Plant Medicine section for a year. I was delighted when Natural Awakenings started this section because It’s an educational resource. There are so many strains out there that are Greek to most of us, but thanks to the Plant Medicine section, some light has been shed on what’s available and the medical benefits from each. My favorite part of the publication is the articles by Jeffrey Green. They are extremely well-written - educational and even sometimes entertaining! MH

Pathways to Metaphysics

E

very Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m., Community of Light holds their Pathways to Metaphysics classes, at Far Horizons East in Tucson. Intended for anyone interested in learning about Metaphysics, the classes touch upon many of the Universal Laws. Metaphysics is a broad topic that includes, but is not limited to, the subjects of philosophy, parapsychology, mysticism, ESP, dreams, astrology, meditation, self-help studies, positive thinking, life after death, reincarnation and more. It is a study of the paranormal. Within the spectrum of Metaphysics are the Universal Laws, a set of principles many believe orchestrate the workings of the Universe. They are: The Laws of Oneness, Correspondence, Vibration, Attraction, Action, Cause & Effect, Compensation, Polarity, Perpetual Transmutation of Energy, Rhythm, Gender and Relativity. There are many books and articles that go into some of the individual laws. The Law of Attraction, for example, is highlighted in the 2006 best-selling, self-help book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. Thoughts and actions that are put out into the universe will come back to the individual. Thinking positive thoughts will bring about positive situations. Thinking negative thoughts can keep someone stuck in a bad position. There are countless ways to study the mysteries of the Universal Laws, and how they can help not only an individual, but humanity in general. It is beneficial to study these topics in a group setting where ideas and experiences can be shared. Location: Far Horizons East, 7570 E. Speedway, Tucson. For more information, call 520-339-2038 or visit TheCommunityofLight.org. See ad, page 22.

Photon Genius Super Sauna Light Therapy

T

he Photon Genius is a revolutionary machine that provides an abundance of healing photons through both its infrared light emitters and its ionized noble gas harmonic frequency dischargers. With over 150 feet of light tubes, no other instrument in the world can provide the level of photon body nourishment as the Photon Genius. It provides the widest range of harmonic frequencies from zero to 2 MHz, which serves to balance all the cells in the body. The Photon Genius Super Sauna provides a full spectrum range of near, medium and far infrared transmissions. Infrared has the ability to penetrate through the skin to the subcutaneous tissues, transforming light energy to heat energy. The thermal effect within the deep layers of the tissues causes blood vessels and capillaries to dilate, promoting better blood circulation and the release of years of toxins and metabolic waste through sweating. The internal heat generated helps to relieve pain, joint stiffness and muscle soreness, as well as strengthen the immune system. Using the Photon Genius regularly also helps the body to naturally increase its production of nitric oxide, which is vital for managing inflammation and scavenging free radicals in the body. Photon Genius sessions are offered through Alive & Well Arizona, located at 2420 W. Ruthrauff Rd., Ste. 160, Tucson. Connect at 520-638-6740 or TucsonPhotonGenius.com.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

C

hronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a brain injury condition that is the end stage consequence of multiple concussion injuries. It is common in athletes that play violent contact sports, but the diagnosis is not limited to this group. All groups that experience multiple concussive injuries are exposed to that risk. It is a common pathology in our military veterans. In a recent Blue Cross Blue Shield study, there has been a tremendous increase in youth concussion diagnosis. A concussion causes diffuse axonal injury (DAI), an injury condition that is not visualized on a routine brain MRI or CT scan even if contrast dye is used. To assess DAI, a specialized test such as a brain MRI-DTI must be done in order to demonstrate the microstructural injury that has occurred. The diffuse nature of DAI interferes with network functions in the brain and causes cognitive and emotional problems, balance problems, sleep disorders, visual function problems and more. Fiber tract analysis of localized DAI can be done in specific areas of the brain such as corpus callosum (connects the right and left hemisphere of the brain), the temporal lobes (responsible for memory), thalamus (sleep-wake cycle) and other areas. Although rehabilitation may restore some functions by rewiring and re-networking, if we do not heal the brain injury itself, the patient is set up for early neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Imaging is easy. Those who have had concussions in their lifetime and are concerned should consider having the study done. Carol Henricks, MD practices at Northstar Hyperbarics, located at 7598 N. THE ART OF INNER PEACE by Martin Klabunde

B

eing human is a gift. The time we have here on Earth is a special time for us as individuals and as a community of physical beings. We are here to learn how to raise our consciousness, both individually

and collectively. We all seek inner peace, happiness and are searching to experience the joys of life in all that we do, yet, for many of us, it seems that they are not as accessible as we would like.

How can we unlock our own inner wisdom that will provide us the answers we have been looking for and live that life we have desired for so long? The answer is simple, and yet, we may find ways to make it complicated and out of reach as long as we continue to search outside ourselves for the answers. As humans, we have a great deal of tools available to us. If we are able to shift our perception and develop emotional agility, then we will recognize them and be able to use them to guide us toward the freedom we all seek. Our emotions are a powerful indicator of where are at currently. They reflect back to us our perception of the world and our place within it. The extreme polarity of our emotions allows us to create experiences that offer us opportunities for inner transformation and to cultivate inner peace. Happiness and joy are fleeting and often related to outer experiences. We have all heard and said, “this or that makes me happy” or “I feel happy or joyful when I do this or that”. Inner peace is a state of being that is stable, constant and long term. When we cultivate inner peace, we no longer experience the extreme highs and lows that our emotions dictate, our perceptions become clearer and we are able to be intentional and strategic about how we think and act. We all have the ability to cultivate inner peace and when we do, our selfawareness increases and we develop a foundation for compassion, gratitude, tolerance, forgiveness and unconditional love. Above all, our quality of life increases; we feel a sense of purpose and we have engaged energy for everything that we do. Now wouldn’t that be awesome? The key to this freedom is awareness and action. First, we must develop a higher perception of and understand our energy and emotions. There are two types of energy: anabolic and catabolic. Anabolic describes energy that is positive, constructive and growth oriented. It helps us move forward to achieve positive, successful results. Using anabolic energy allows us to have a more complete and conscious view of what is going on around us, and to more easily come up with solutions and innovations. Catabolic describes energy that is

draining, destructive and harmful to us and those around us. This type of energy works against us and can prevent us from achieving our fullest potential. When we feel catabolic energy via emotions such as anger, envy, jealousy and shame, we are being shown an opportunity to shift that energy into a more anabolic state using awareness and specific tools and resources such as creativity, imagination and intuition. These tools or technologies are available to us every moment of every day and learning how to harness the power of them will change our perception and change our life. Our current level of awareness has been determined by what we have learned up until this point. If we want to learn, grow and transform further, then we have to open ourselves up to new ideas, tools and resources. We ought to be intentional and strategic about our mental, emotional and spiritual development. A transformational coach can help on this journey of inner transformation by providing reflections, tools and resources

to help utilize our experiences in a way that allows us to raise our consciousness, expand our awareness and release any inner or outer blocks that are currently limiting our inner peace. Transformational coaching is a philosophy that embodies the whole being of the client. It rests on the idea that we have all the answers we are looking for within us and when we tap into that vast pool of inner wisdom, we develop an inner knowing (our intuition) that guides us on our journey. Martin Klabunde is a Certified Professional Coach that specializes in individual and couples transformational coaching and Energy Leadership coaching. He is also a mentor, public speaker, author and musician, with over 20 years of experience in coaching, team building, leadership development, mentoring and communication development. Yoga gives us powerful tools so we may age gracefully. ~Lisa Moore

The Power of Yoga

Tapping Into the Life Force by Marlaina Donato

L

ongevity is something most of us strive for, and increasingly, research shows that implementing a consistent yoga practice can be a fruitful investment toward that goal. Yoga is an eight-branch system of well-being that encompasses exercise, meditation, conscious breathing, diet and other elements,

but how it effects mind-body fitness alone is proving to be a reliable defense against age-related loss of mobility, cardiovascular disease and depression. Its stress-busting capabilities help to support challenged adrenal glands and lower elevated blood pressure. Getting on the mat can improve insulin sensitivity in

diabetics and also help balance immune responses in individuals with autoimmune conditions or insufficient natural killer cells. Combined research from 22 studies by the University of Edinburgh reveals that yoga, compared to both sedentary lifestyles and other forms of exercise such as walking or chair aerobics, improved the lower-body strength and flexibility in individuals age 60 and older. The findings published earlier this year in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity also showed improved quality of sleep and fewer symptoms of depression.

Fewer Health Risks, Stronger Bones

Yoga’s inverted poses increase blood circulation to vital organs, including the intestines, which facilitates assimilation of nutrients and waste elimination. Asanas like shoulder stand, bridge and downwardfacing dog stimulate blood flow from the lower extremities to the heart and fortify red blood cells by increasing hemoglobin, guarding against blood clots, stroke and heart attack. Yoga can also strengthen the bones. A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Yoga shows improved bone mineral density in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. “Much like a house that sits empty

or a car left to sit unused in a garage, our human parts can age and rot without movement. Movement creates more energy,” explains Nancy Poole, a teacher at Clarksburg Yoga and Wellness, in Clarksburg, Maryland. Joints lose flexibility as we age, but yoga movement provides them with essential oxygen, blood and nutrients. Lisa Moore, owner of Free to Be Yoga, in Great Falls, Montana, underscores, “A joint needs to move through its full range of motion to function well. Movement helps lubricate and cushion joints, provides nutrition and removes wastes.”

Stretching Into Joy

A 2014 hatha yoga study published in the Journals of Gerontology revealed increased cognitive function in older adults after eight weeks of yoga three times a week. Yoga’s super power lies in its capacity to reset the autonomic nervous system and ramp up mood-boosting serotonin while decreasing monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that disarms the effects of stress hormones like cortisol. influence of yoga, the brain is bathed in calming neurotransmitters, combatting depression and anxiety, and instilling a sense of optimism. “Yoga also helps us to embrace the hard times and ride the waves. With the tools that yoga provides, we can swim toward the light. It also helps us to experience a more intimate relationship with body and soul, and in turn make better choices in all aspects of life,” notes Carmen Ferreira, owner of the Sunshine Barre Studio, in Rocky Point, New York. Moore concurs, advising, “Yoga gives us powerful tools so we may age gracefully. One of them is to manage stress with equanimity.”

The Breath of Life

Conscious breathing is at the core of a dedicated yoga practice, and a lowered risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease gives us another reason to inhale and exhale deeply. Poole observes, “Our general population does not breathe correctly, and many of us even hold our breath unconsciously. For my students, the hardest part of yoga is learning to take deep, full breaths. Old breathing habits must be unlearned. Once attention is given to the breath, tensions can be released.” “Yoga improves lung capacity and brings more energy to the cells, which in turn creates more energy and life force in our bodies,” says Ferreira. “It helps us to live from the heart’s center and foster a better quality of life,” she adds. “Each time we show up on our mats, we show up for ourselves, an opportunity to nourish the body, our one and only temple.” Marlaina Donato is an author of several books and a composer. Reflexology for Ageless Radiant Beauty

T

he phrase, “beauty is only skin deep” is interpreted as physical beauty being just superficial. But the skin is important and, in fact, the body’s largest organ. Skin is named the integumentary (covering) system and operates in harmony with all other body systems. It functions as a protector for the organs and regulates the body’s temperature, provides sweat glands and hair follicles, stores water and prevents water loss, stores fat, gathers sensory information from the environment and prevents bacteria from entering the body. Thousands of receptor cells live in the thicker skin on the soles of the feet, making them among the most nerve-rich parts of the body. Reflexology on the feet sends calming and relaxing messages to the brain through these cells. It also helps improve circulation so all living cells get a fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients. Reflexologists often notice immediate changes in the color, texture, tone and overall vitality of their clients’ skin, appearing soft, pink, moisturized and younger looking. But, the true magic of reflexology is how it subtly but powerfully accesses and releases deep tension anywhere in the human body, allowing for the natural, ageless radiance to shine through. Now, that’s real beauty. Cheryl Foster, a Nationally Board Certified Reflexologist, has been in practice for 15 years. THE EFFECTS OF BODYWORK ON AGING

A

by Zachary Saber

ging is not caused by wearing down, but is more accurately described as an orderly program of self-destruction. Some aspects of aging appear as accumulated damage (such as cartilage worn away from joints or build-up of cross-linked sugar-protein complexes), but on closer inspection, even these are seen to be entirely avoidable consequences of the body shutting down its repair systems. Luckily, various types of bodywork can drastically improve our body’s aging process. “Living things are fundamentally homeostatic. They can repair themselves. They build themselves from a single egg cell,” says Josh Mitteldorf, of the Mayo Clinic. “The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that entropy (disorder, degeneration, damage) must increase in any isolated physical system. But living systems are not isolated. Living things draw free energy from their environment, use it internally, then dump waste entropy back into the environment. Total energy cannot be created or destroyed, but free energy becomes degraded into warmth as it is used. Both living things and non-living machines take in high-grade forms of free energy, use some of that for their various functions, and discard the same total amount of energy as low-grade chemical energy and warmth.” This isn’t some lucky feature, tacked on to living bodies, rescuing them from an ironclad law of physics. The capacity for homeostasis is built into the form and function of living things. To a physicist, a living body is defined by its ability to create and maintain itself using ambient sources of free energy. The very function of the living machine is homeostasis and to reproduce. Exercise generates free radicals like crazy, but the body’s native antioxidant defenses overcompensate. Muscles suffer little tears, bones tiny fractures, and yet the body repairs these better than

new, and the result is that we live longer if we exercise. When we regularly receive bodywork, whether it be Swedish massage, reiki work, fascial work, acupuncture or other, our bodies revive, repair and heal faster as well as better than when we put off bodywork. Some of the biochemistry of aging is understood now, and its basis looks like self-destruction, not like attrition. Inflammation, which protects the young body against invading microbes, is turned against healthy tissues in old age, damaging arterial walls in particular, and triggers cancers everywhere. This is specifically where lymph drainage, massage and acupuncture are so excellent. Move the inflammation out of the body. Using nutrients as well as bodywork will improve mobility, motility and relieve unwanted pain—all of which age us too soon. The most common change is the cardiovascular system in stiffening of the blood vessels and arteries, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood through them. The heart muscles change to adjust to the increased workload. Your heart rate at rest will stay about the same, but it won’t increase during activities as much as it used to. These changes increase the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) and other cardiovascular problems. Here again, all forms of bodywork assist in keeping the heart muscle doing its job. It keeps the vessels fluid and mobile, allowing the other muscles in the

body to pump the blood back to the lungs and heart, keeping us active and healthy. Age-related structural changes in the large intestine can result in constipation in older adults. In truth, it’s not age related, it’s diet related. The abuses we have put our bodies through in what we feed ourselves cause most of the issues we have in our guts. Other contributing factors include a lack of exercise, not drinking enough fluids and a low-fiber diet. Medications, such as diuretics and medical conditions such as diabetes, contribute to constipation. This can also be relieved through massage, other forms of bodywork and acupuncture. Changing our diet, regardless of how old we get, will help us not only feel better quickly, but allow our body to work toward healing better as well as faster. Massage; relax the muscles, move the fluids, reduce inflammation, improve range of motion. These are the best steps toward a younger you. To promote bone, joint and muscle health, massage and acupuncture aid in keeping inflammation out of the joints, which slows down any erosion of the joint capsules and cartilage. Also, get adequate amounts of calcium; Vitamin D; weightbearing exercises such as walking, tennis and stair climbing; and avoid substance abuse. The brain undergoes changes as we age that may have minor effects on our memory or thinking skills. For example, healthy older adults might forget familiar names or words, or they may find it more difficult to multitask. We can promote

cognitive health by taking the following steps: add physical activity, eat a healthy diet, play word games to keep mentally active, don’t ignore cardiovascular issues and avoid substance abuse. Some supplements assist in mending the memory centers, allowing for faster recall and clearer memory function. This is also improved with regular bodywork, massage, acupuncture and fascial work, all of which assist in keeping inflammation markers limited, which allows for an ongoing steady flow of lymph and blood to and from the brain. With age, sexual needs and performance might change. Illness or medication might affect our ability to enjoy sex. For women, vaginal dryness can make having sex uncomfortable. For men, impotence might become a concern. It might take longer to get an erection, and erections might not be as firm as they used to be. To promote sexual health, be honest with partners and physicians. Hormones and diet change may help, as well as decreasing alcohol intake and getting massages. Keep the body relaxed and destressed and keep the circulation going. Zachary Saber, LMT practices at WellnessFirst!, in Tucson. THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM Fountain of Youth

V

by Susan Couture

isualize a trickling stream in the countryside. The fallen leaves and sticks have slowed down the current. Look closely and we see remnants of trash, aluminum cans, plastic bags and chemicals washed from the agricultural farmlands. Now if we were to rake the stream, starting downstream and working our way upstream, the debris is cleaned out and the current becomes swift and flowing from bank to bank. Our lymphatic system is the stream. This is our “Fountain of Youth” flowing within us. Images of the aging lymphatic vessels show degeneration, disconnection and deterioration, impeding the removal of natural and man-made chemicals. Edema builds up in the extremities and the legs become heavy with water. Immunity from inoculations have worn off; the memory cells have been completely broken down over the years.

Two really big jobs the lymphatic system is tasked with are purifying plasma proteins and hosting immunological responses. There is no heart to pump the lymphatics. It is dependent upon muscle pump, joint pump, diaphragmatic breathing and arterial pulse. So how do we keep the lymphatic system from aging? It is the old adage, “Use it or lose it.” Exercising, deep breathing, clean eating, intermittent fasting, limiting exposure to chemicals and getting manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) are actions that help keep a person healthy and contribute to a long life free of ailments. Regularly exercising the heart helps the heart muscle become stronger; hence, regular MLD treatments develop muscle memory for the lymph-angion muscles and the entire lymphatic system becomes stronger. The safety-valve mechanism of injured tissue, broken bones and arthritis activates a frenzy of lymph-angion muscle contractions to carry away edema. Just like any muscle, fatigue sets in and not another contraction is possible. The fluids build up and can cause tissue damage to extremely swollen, stagnant areas. Think of diabetic ulcerations in the lower leg or chronic venous insufficiency. The tissue pressure loses its strength, arterial blood pressure has less resistance and “blow-out” can occur, causing purple discoloration and thickening of the skin. MLD re-activates and re-energizes the sleeping lymphatic vessels by assisting the removal of fluids, breaking down fibrous tissue and increasing the contractility of the lymph vessels. In a healthy aging person, a strong lymphatic system hosts better communication on the cellular level and assists with homeostasis responses—from transporting lipids, hormones, histamine and fluids, to mitigating inflammation and fighting cancer cells. Susan Couture, BSHA, CRC, LMT, LE, Cert. MLD/CDP, practices at OM Oracle Massage Lymphatic Therapy, in Tucson. Her eyes still gleam and her smile still shines—looking at her, one might think that she had discovered a fountain of youth. In a way, she has, through the power of Hormone Yoga. Rodrigues, a professor of physiology and psychology, created Hormone Yoga about 30 years ago.

Hormone Yoga allows women of any age and women who suffer any hormonal or menopausal issue to experience the perfect beauty and health that they often feel barred from. “Society tells women that menopause is a gate to an old age where femininity and beauty is forever lost, but it is not true. Everything is about hormonal balance and stress management,” explains Rodrigues. “Balanced hormones can help us feel energetic, calmer, sleep better—therefore, look better and have radiant skin. Clients often report feeling great in their bodies, having more energy and enjoying their life to the fullest potential.” Looking at Rodrigues, she’s the perfect icon for her own practice. Although she’s 92, she still practices and teaches Hormone Yoga all over the world, travelling from her home in Brazil to over half a dozen countries across North America and Europe to certify new Hormone Yoga teachers, remaining lively even while teaching for upwards of eight hours a day. And, like Rodrigues, Hormone Yoga is around to stay—helping women reclaim their youth and health for over 30 years. To win back the vibrancy and health that hormonal and menopausal issues can leave feeling unobtainable, give Hormone Yoga a chance. This practice is easy to learn in a workshop and then can be practiced at home once students master the method. Abdominal breathing and dynamic poses help to massage glands and organs, activate the vagus nerve and help with lymphatic drainage. If hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, depression, painful periods, hormonal acne, PMS, PCOS, infertility or thyroid issues feel alltoo-familiar, Hormone Yoga could be the answer. Lydie Vagnerova is a certified teacher of Hormone Yoga by Dinah Rodrigues—one of the few Hormone Yoga certified U.S. teachers—bringing health and wellness to Tucson. Beauty From The Inside Out

I

by Jean Read

n today’s world, it is so easy to pull into a drive through restaurant when we are hungry and grab something to satiate the desire. Unfortunately, much of what is purchased through a pass-through window does little to nourish and fortify the skin, body and mind. Most fast foods create a great deal of inflammation in the body, which create free radicals that may accelerate aging. We have known for many years that more fruits, vegetables and grass-fed, pasture-raised animals provide the greatest nourishment and most often, reverse our signs of aging. So, what should we eat to improve our mental clarity and energy and reduce again? While there is a wide variety of foods that can do this, let’s try to keep it simple: eat foods high in antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that are running around in our body, causing it to age rapidly. Antioxidants are the plant nutrients that usually give the vegetable or fruit its color. Like some say, “eat the rainbow” every day. This means that we should eat fruits and vegetables of every color. Here are four ways we can monitor and hit our target of getting a wide variety of fruits and vegetables into our diet daily.

1

Eat six to nine cups of fruits and vegetables daily, including leafy greens. Get one to three cups of fruit or veggies in each meal. Keep track of each color eaten during the day. This will help target vegetables to add for dinner (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple).

4

Make meals with one meat and two or three vegetables. Keep it simple or get creative. Have fun with it. In addition to eating fresh foods, there is more to health than just diet. To fortify and nourish the body, mind and spirit, we also need to get good sleep, reduce stress, be playful, socialize with friends and family and get regular exercise. It’s all about diet and lifestyle. So, get that list on the fridge, load up the grocery cart with some great fruits and vegetables and enjoy a meal with loved ones. Beauty starts from the inside.

aily news footage and photos capture the damage plastic is doing to the planet’s oceans: turtles ensnared in plastic nets, whales with guts full of plastics and aerial views of the burgeoning island of floating detritus known as the Pacific Garbage Patch. Tiny pieces of plastic are even showing up in our food and drinking water. The growing plastics crisis has some people yearning for the days when soft drinks and beer all came in reusable containers that required a deposit, or when

milk and cream were delivered to the front porch in quaint, glass bottles. Sherri Mason, Ph.D., sustainability coordinator at Penn State Behrend, in Erie, Pennsylvania, believes this is exactly the direction this issue may take. “I do think some of it will be a return to glass,” she says. Mason conducted a study in 2018 and discovered that bottled water contained tiny bits of microplastic. An earlier tap water study she conducted showed there were about five particles of plastic in a liter of tap water, if averaged across

NaturalTucson.com

the globe. “We thought that would shock people into demanding change. Instead, a lot of the comments were to drink more bottled water.” In the 2018 study, Mason and her team, then at the State University of New York at Fredonia, tested 259 bottles of water from nine countries that included all the top brands in the U.S.—Dasani, Aquafina and Nestlé Pure Life, among them. “On average, for every liter of bottled water in total, you would be ingesting 325 pieces of plastic. We had one bottle of Nestlé Pure Life with over 10,000 pieces of plastic. These are the particles that can make their way across the gastrointestinal tract and be carried to your blood, liver, kidneys and brain,” Mason says. Analysis of the particles indicates that the plastics found in bottled water leach from the container itself, while the source in tap water may be PVC pipes and fittings. However, plastics are also ubiquitous in surface and groundwater, and may make their way into drinking supplies via air, wind, rain and industrial activity, according to an assessment published earlier this year in the journal Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health. After Mason’s findings were released, the World Health Organization announced a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water. Meantime, the impact of plastic pollution on marine life—zooplankton, seabirds, marine mammals and reptiles throughout the food chain—is well documented, according to a 2014 study published in the online journal

green living

PLOS ONE. The study estimates more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic, weighing somewhere near 269,000 tons, are floating in the Earth’s oceans. People are loudly calling for change, and innovators are responding. In the United Kingdom, there is the Plastics Pact, which brings together businesses from across the plastic industry to eliminate problematic or single-use plastics through redesign, innovation and alternative delivery models. A UK startup, Ooho, has created an edible water container made of seaweed to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact. Tom Szaky, the CEO and founder of TerraCycle, a Trenton, New Jersey, recycling company, is among those pioneering a rebirth of reusing with a pilot project launched in May called Loop. The company has partnered with Proctor & Gamble, Nestlé, Clorox and other major brands to deliver and retrieve products in durable, reusable containers, just like the milk man. Consumers can order everyday items from the online Loop store—paying a deposit on the container—and UPS will deliver it to their doorstep, picking up empties to be washed, refilled and used again and again. “Hundreds of products, from Tide to Häagen-Dazs to Tropicana, are being delivered,” says Szaky. “It’s growing very fast in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.; and we’ve just expanded to Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Delaware—eventually nationwide.” The re-use revolution is also taking shape in 10 states and a U.S. territory that have passed “bottle bills”: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Guam. QI The Force Behind Blood Flow and Higher Intelligence Interview with Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack (Part 2 of 2) Conducted by Publisher Damon Damato DD: How did your father’s work impact you by working in the medical field growing up as a child?

JP: “My dad is a pharmacist at a hospital and he loves people. He knows pharmaceuticals have side effects and believes in preventing disease using food. At first, my dad didn’t believe in Qigong. Once he felt the energy for himself he began practicing Qigong and studying Chinese medical

models. My choice to enter the wellness field was influenced by my dad and his emphasis to a scientific approach. I have a healthy skepticism and present with scientific method. After Paul flew back to China I craved to find another Qigong expert who could explain more. Master Weizhao Wu was my most influential teacher for Qigong and he practiced since age 7. Although he passed

away, his memory lives in the most excellent posture corrections that he carefully gave. He would open my thumb and relax it so the tendons were not hard anymore. That thumb correction makes a huge improvement to Qi flow and has been passed to my forms.”

DD: Through this process of education and discipline, how long did it take for you to create the Supreme Science Qigong healing forms?

JP: “After 5 years traveling and producing seminars for other Qigong masters, I finally created my Level-1 Qigong Healing Form. It was first published in our books 2003 and only a few dozen instructors memorized it, but by 2007 we had certified a thousand people to teach the routine. Our videos were ‘Qi-Animated’ to show energy graphically and it assisted people in becoming sensitive to energy. In 2013, we upgraded our Qigong videos to HD animation and in 2017 we finally released our remastered Level-2 video with Ultra HD 4K animation. Spirit continues to reveal better ways for us to share these healing practices.”

DD: Will participants get to experience these Forms at the Qi Revolution Event?

JP: “All 3-levels of our Qigong program are shared in detail along with Breath Empowerment, Nine-Breath Method, Tui Na Acupressure, Foot Reflexology and FoodHealing. Qi Revolution is balanced in presentation and practice. After the event, most people choose to continue practicing Qigong from home.”

SLEEP BRACELET Wearers have experienced:

DD: Fitness classes normally get me amped up. Strength Training you share at Qi Revolution challenges me, but it has more mastery of breath than any workout I’ve done. What is significant in your Qigong strength practices for longevity?

JP: “Most important is to slow down breathing in Qigong Strength Training, but most athletes increase respiration when using force. Slowing breathing during pushups changes hormones we make. To demonstrate this relaxing skill during exercises, I performed 750 pushups with twenty students counting and making sure I went up and down all the way. Qi Breathing allows for the ATP to replenish faster so that muscle contractions can occur sooner. This also dilates arteries and increases production of Nitric oxide to lower blood pressure during strenuous exercise.”

DD: If there was one take away at the end of the Qi Revolution, what would you wish for each person to embody? JP: “The most important embodiment I’d like people to walk away with is that we can BREATHE through life’s challenges and allow God’s Healing Qi to bring strength and guidance. Attendees will personally experience a higher energy from the Qigong. For the last 15 years, people write us thanking us for the powerful breathing exercises at crucial life challenge points. Qigong helps people process stress, but most of all it brings us into a higher state of wellbeing. We make our seminar affordable at 3-Days for $199 so that more people can reclaim their Qi.” See ad, page 4. September 21st 23rd, 2019 ARIZONA Tucson Convention Center

PLANT MEDICINE SECTION

Natural Remedies for Seasonal Allergies by J. Garnet ccording to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, over 50 million Americans are diagnosed with allergies. Many more are obviously living with the miserable symptoms and are undiagnosed by a professional. Allergens are present during every season of the month and vary from region to region. The pesky particles that are to blame are not bound by the outdoors and can be found inside the home as well. People suffering from allergies experience numerous symptoms, such as runny, watery eyes and nose, congestion, coughing, fatigue, headaches, nausea and more. The severity of these symptoms can be mild to severe, but no matter how miserable, they can be uncomfortable, debilitating and cause many people to miss work and fun activities each season. The plush green grass, the patchwork of leaf color, the first blossom of the year or the cracklings of a roaring fire on a chilly winter’s night—just a few of the things compromised because of a pounding congested head, aggravated lungs and any number of the horrible side effects that accompany allergies. While allergies in general can be crippling, there are some that are worse than others. People allergic to particular foods including wheat, shellfish, nuts and insect bites and stings can be in mortal danger if anaphylactic shock occurs. When this type of allergic reaction occurs, the body’s immune system is in overdrive, and all systems and organs are affected and begin to shut down. This can cause death. In these extreme cases, doctors prescribe medications that patients can keep on hand in case this type of reaction occurs.

A

30

Tucson Edition

NaturalTucson.com

For milder allergies, doctors still prescribe medications for the symptoms. More so, there are a plethora of medications that can be bought over-the-counter. Many of these medications can cause side effects that are just as bothersome as the allergies themselves. Common side effects of allergy medicine include significant sedation, dry mouth, blurred vision, trouble urinating, constipation and agitation. Precautions are given to patients who suffer from seizures, glaucoma, thyroid disorders, high blood pressure and diabetes because allergy medication can have adverse reactions. According to a research study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, first generation antihistamines, like Benadryl for example, have been shown to increase the risk of early onset dementia by 54 percent. Antihistamines block a neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, which is essential for memory and learning. The study was done with people who took antihistamines on a regular basis, and there are many allergy sufferers who fight their symptoms year round. There are natural antihistamines, however, that can be found in some foods and plant extracts that can be used as an alternative to prescribed and over-the-counter allergy medications. In a 2018 long-term observational study published in the Journal of International Medical Research, revealed that Vitamin C, when given in large doses intravenously, acts as a natural antihistamine. Oxidative stress is a major contributor to allergies. Vitamin C combats the oxidative process with the high levels of antioxidants and its anti-inflammatory properties. Some fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C are broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, kiwi, squash, melons and citrus fruits. There are other natural antihistamines that can be used as well. Bromelain, which is an enzyme in the core and juice of pineapples, has been shown to work as an anti-inflammatory for the sinus cavity. Probiotics can be found in yogurt, pickles, kombucha, sauerkraut and miso, and boost the body’s immune system, which can help fight off allergies. Quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid that has been shown to be an anti-allergic and antihistamine. It can be found in apples, grapes, berries, black tea, red onions and red wine. The extracts from the plants butterbur, astragalus, grape seeds, stinging nettle and spirulina are all effective in fighting allergy symptoms. These can all be found in supplement form and can be added to most diets, especially during times when allergy sufferers are affected most. Many people go to great lengths to fight their allergies, including getting shots to desensitize them to the allergens affecting them. Allergy shots contain small amounts of pollen and allergens. The shots are meant to help the body build up a resistance to these allergens. However, there’s a natural way to build up a resistance, without having to endure the prick of a needle;

bees can be a major player in fighting allergies without stinging. Bees can be found in every geographic area around the country. Bees collect pollen from many of the plants and flowers that cause some of the most severe allergy symptoms. Consuming raw, unfiltered honey is a natural, tasty way to fight and desensitize against allergens. Local honey works best because the pollen being collected by bees is coming from local plants that are wreaking havoc on people’s allergic response. Allergens are found almost everywhere and at any time of year. Inside a house where the windows remain closed during the winter months, the blooming of spring, the growth of summer and the harvesting of fall all produce particulates that attack people’s bodies and cause horrible symptoms. Eating fruits, vegetables, taking plant extracts and consuming local honey are all natural ways to treat allergies. Put those pharmaceuticals back on the shelf, enjoy the seasons and find relief with plant medicines. J. Garnet, M.A., is an educator and freelance writer. Cannabinoids interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system, helping to bring our body back to homeostasis, when all body functions are working well and in sync. When the body functions correctly, it loses dead cells and generates new cells to replace them. CBD helps regulate the various body cycles that result in cell regeneration and rejuvenation. A women’s body changes constantly due to the stresses of motherhood, hormones and daily life challenges. CBD can be a great way to naturally give our body a boost and help regulate those hormones and body functions that cause issues. Dr. Aimee Gregorie Bachelier

r. Aimee Gregorie Bachelier is reminded of her first insight into plants: plants in pots around the house, indoor and out, some of them with delicate white flowers, and some with long dagger-shaped flesh, like the aloe vera succulent. It wasn’t uncommon to see aloe growing here in the Southwest, but it never crossed her mind to imagine the good it was capable of. Now a Naturopathic Physician at Purity of Life, in Tucson, Bachelier assists with Medical Marijuana certification and makes house calls utilizing botanical medicine. Botanical medicine, or plant-based medicine, focuses on more than the herbs of herbal remedies, to include other plant parts, such as bark, seeds, roots and stems. Botanicals first introduced on the drug market for therapeutic use were pure natural products derived from plants, like Morphine, derived from the opium poppy. “A living plant is a complex system. It fuels itself from sunlight and water, creating energy. It is this power, synergy or entourage of the whole plant that makes it

greater than its parts,” explains Bachelier. Because of America’s opioid epidemic and resulting “opiophobia”, more people are turning to more natural options like organically farmed, whole foods and botanical medicine. Medical claims are not to be made for natural products, as they are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Take, for example, the hemp plant. A full-spectrum, naturally extracted CBD from the plant is of a better quality and concentration, and preferred therapeutically to an isolated component of the plant, mainly because it contains additional phytocannabinoids, or trace amounts of other plant parts, working in conjunction with one another to create a synergistic effect. Historically, hemp products have been used to combat anxiety and depression, relieve pain and calm nerves. New scientific evidence has presented anti-oxidative and analgesic effects, neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, all regulated in one way or another by the endocannabinoid system. s medicinal marijuana continues to slowly become more mainstream, thousands of Arizonans are becoming legal cardholders each month. There are still many people wrestling with the decision to transition from pharmaceuticals, and move away from the stigma that has been attached to marijuana for decades. Times are changing and it’s time to start viewing marijuana as a medication. In the state of Arizona, in order to obtain a medical marijuana card, a person must be suffering from certain conditions which warrant the benefits of cannabis. There are qualifying conditions that enable a patient to obtain a card. The patient must have at least one of these diseases, illnesses or conditions: cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, chronic pain, PTSD, seizures or many other conditions which arise from having any of these diseases. A doctor must be seen and a pro34

fessional diagnosis must be given before a card can be issued. The card will allow the holder to enter medical marijuana dispensaries and purchase products that will help and treat the symptoms of illness. In some cases, marijuana has been shown to cure certain ailments altogether and not just treat the symptoms. Qualifying for, and receiving, your medical marijuana card is just one of the multiple steps needed in order to become proficient with the terminology, chemistry and products available. As with most prescription drugs, there will be a trial and error process that is involved. With so many products on the market, finding the best one to fit individual needs is going to take some time and footwork. Learning all there is to know about the specific products that are available can be a daunting task. Becoming a selfadvocate in personal health, medications and treatment will take research. Talking with professionals and with other people

who have already made the transition into natural medicine is one way to get a broader understanding of the industry. Dispensaries offer educational packets for all new patients. The resource has valuable information that will allow the transition from pharmaceuticals to natural medicine to be much smoother. Decisions can be made based on education and research studies. The information provided in the new customer packet highlights the basics of medicinal marijuana. What are the two types of marijuana? What conditions do each of the types treat? What is a hybrid strain? What risks are involved? All of these questions are answered in the educational material given on the first visit. The first people that are met when going to the dispensary for the first time are also valuable resources for the new patient. The Dispensary Agents, also called Budtenders, can play a vital role in helping to answer questions and concerns for the new patient. Anxiety and chronic pain are two of the primary conditions that Kamron Bughio, Manager for Earth’s Healing, says that he sees with new patients. Bughio also states that new patients spend an average of 20 minutes with the Budtender on their first visit. Interacting and having a conversation with a knowledgeable representative can make the initial visit to a dispensary far less intimidating or scary. With over 1,000 new patients per month combined at both Earth’s Healing locations, it’s evident that more and more people are finally taking control of their own health needs. Having open conversations with friends, family and even coworkers about how medicinal marijuana is changing lives is vital for the expansion of plant medicine. Walking into a dispensary shouldn’t be embarrassing or intimidating. A person who is entering a marijuana dispensary must be seen as someone taking control of their health and medical needs. Considering an Ayahuasca Ceremony? Five Essential Questions by Alexcis Lopez

P

sychedelics are back and gaining momentum as a legitimate healing option for many with issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction. Just this year, the cities of Denver and Oakland voted to decriminalize certain psychedelics, and a handful of other cities have similar initiatives on the voting block. With the rise of what some are calling the “psychedelic renaissance”, the need for more education around psychedelic medicines is increasing.

Ayahuasca is one of the psychedelic plant medicines that is gaining in popularity. Whether traveling outside the U.S. or not, it is important to do research when considering Ayahuasca or any psychedelic. These medicines are powerful and it is important that we approach any work with them responsibly, respectfully and sacredly. With that in mind, here are five essential questions we need to ask when considering an Ayahuasca ceremony.

Having an experienced Ayahuasquero (master of Ayahuasca), also called the Maestro/a, is crucial to the safety of the experience. The Maestro/a is in charge of the physical and spiritual safety of the group and also guides the energy of the ceremony. It takes many years of work, both personally and then as an assistant/apprentice, before a person is ready to take on the responsibility of leading a ceremony. Whether the leader of the ceremony is a native South American or not is less of an issue than their integrity, training and intentions. Just because someone bills themselves as a “Shaman”, native or not, does not mean that they know how to work safely with Ayahuasca or that they have good intentions. When we drink the Aya brew, we enter an altered state that can leave us very vulnerable on all levels: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Ask about the ceremony leader’s experience, training, philosophy, and possible, have a personal conversation with them. Remember, if need be, this is the person to turn to for help in the middle of the ceremony. Have full confidence in their experience, abilities and integrity before signing up.

What are we drinking? Ayahuasca is a brew or tea that is created from reducing down a combination of the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and Psychotria virdis (chacura), which contains DMT. The Aya vine contains

alkaloids that act as MAO inhibitors and block the breakdown of the DMT, allowing it to cross the blood brain barrier intact. It is the combination of these two plants that produce the profound effects that Ayahuasca is known for. Heart problems, antidepressants, active addiction and certain mental health conditions can all be issues when taking Ayahuasca. Legitimate and responsible groups will always do a medical screening of participants. Not being asked to fill out a medical history is a red flag. Also, not all Ayahuasca is created the same. Depending on the lineage of the Ayahuasquero, the brew may contain between two and 15 ingredients. There are many other plants and barks that can be added for a variety of reasons and effects. Besides speaking with the facilitator about medical history, ask what is in the brew and what effects can be expected from any additional ingredients.

Where will the ceremony take place? Ceremonies can be held in many different venues, from private homes to out of doors locations. The environment of a ceremony can add or subtract from the overall experience. Things to consider include: access to toilets, comfort with bugs/creatures, temperature, open space versus contained space and security. Those afraid or uncomfortable in wild settings should reconsider participating in an outdoor ceremony. Those who don’t do well without modern comforts like indoor plumbing and air conditioning probably won’t enjoy a trip to the jungle, where most ceremonies happen in traditional huts and there may only be outhouses. Be aware of and comfortable with where the ceremony is being held.

Ask the facilitator about post-ceremony integration opportunities. What type of support do they offer, if any: private counseling/guidance, groups, community events, workshops, emails? Whether it is through the ceremony group or other channels, be sure to set up post-ceremony support to be able to continue the healing work. While psychedelic medicines offer powerful healing opportunities, working with them should never be undertaken lightly. With the answers to these five questions, we can make more informed decisions that will support having a powerful and positive experience. Alexcis Lopez, MS, CHt, NLP, works with clients who are seeking mental, emotional and spiritual peace and clarity. She offers private RESET sessions, Ayahuasca retreats, cacao and kava ceremonies and healing workshops. Connect at 520-690-6576 or AlexcisLopez.com. See ad, page 18.

Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world. ~George Bernard Shaw

How many participants? The size of the group is also an important factor of the experience. Be sure that there are enough facilitators to ensure the safety of the participants. There may be only one Maestro/a, but there should be additional helpers/assistants to help with the group depending on the size. The larger the group, the more help needed and the easier it is to get somewhat lost as a participant—especially for a newbie. Smaller groups of six to 15 people allow for more attention if needed. Another consideration is that larger groups are sometimes given a weaker brew to make it easier for the facilitators to handle the number of people involved. Make sure the size of the group fits individual needs and desired experience.

What happens after? Integration is a key ingredient in psychedelic medicine. It is important to have support post-ceremony to help process the insights, visions and experiences. The healing work that Ayahuasca offers can open deep wounds and create space for transformation that can need additional processing and integration once returned home.

CANNABIS CORNER:

S

Sweet Black Angel

weet Black Angel is a strain of marijuana whose origin begins with two parent plants that are respected throughout the medical marijuana industry. Super Silver Haze is a sativa dominant, award-winning strain that works well for people treating high levels of stress, depression or lack of appetite. Black Domina is pure indica, meaning it will bring about complete relaxation and sleepiness. Together, these two parent plants were combined to develop Sweet Black Angel. Sweet Black Angel is indica dominant and boasts a sweet musky aroma with hints of blackberry. It offers a relaxing body high and is most suitable for chronic pain, anxiety, stress, insomnia and as an anti-inflammatory. The effects of the strain are sleepiness, relaxation, euphoria, happiness and creativity, and is best used in the evening. The most common side effect is dry mouth. Sweet Black Angel can be purchased at Earth’s Healing Dispensary, conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., Tucson. Connect at EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 31. 38

ver thought about taking a yoga or mindfulness practice to a new “high”? Yoga classes offer both physical and mental benefits for people of all ages. Classes are popping up everywhere, from fitness gyms to private studios, while others practice in the comfort of their own homes. But what about adding an extra level of depth by using cannabis beforehand? Yoga is effective for balance, concentration and focus. It aids both mentally and physically by calming the body and mind. Some medical marijuana patients believe that utilizing cannabis before yoga enhances their yoga practice. Cannabis fights inflammation and pain while helping muscle tension and anxious thinking. “Cannabis and yoga can go hand-in-hand. They both involve a spiritual aspect such as bringing a higher level or consciousness. I feel more calm and introspective when I’m doing yoga and also when I’m in an elevated state after smoking cannabis,” says a Tucson SAINTS medical marijuana patient. “By combining the two, a new spiritual plane has been opened for me—one that has helped me overcome PTSD and intense depression and anxiety that Western Medicine has not been able to cure. This is my own therapy that is healing my mind, body and spirit.” Exercising while calm is very important to two Tucson SAINTS Budtenders. “When I smoke Citrus Soother, a SAINTS grown Hybrid, before I go to yoga, not only does it relax me but it calms my body. It really opens my heart and mind chakras so that I’m able to practice better. Cannabis helps me get into deeper stretches and get more out of what yoga is. It’s so healing,” says Kate Frey, a Tucson SAINTS Dispensary Budtender. She is very familiar with the ancient Ayurvedic perspective on marijuana and yoga and feels a strong spiritual connection that helps bring her peace of mind and open her senses all at the same time. April B., a patient visiting SAINTS dispensary, says that she uses a discreet vape pen before class. “I was so nervous going to a yoga class, thinking thoughts about what if I look ridiculous, what if I don’t know what to do. But now that I calm my nerves before class, I feel much more relaxed and I’m also able to calm my racing thoughts,” she says. “Additionally, my body isn’t so tense anymore. Puffing on my vape pen before I walk into the studio has proven to be such a good combo for me and now I’m getting my husband to come with me, too, since he is a MMJ patient who uses medical marijuana for severe pain. He loves coming to yoga with me now.” Another patient chimed in and said that he uses medical marijuana before his meditation class to get more in touch with his body and mind. He feels that cannabis helps open his airways and breathe easier. Due to the growing legalization throughout the country, more medical discoveries have been made about cannabis and all the benefits that it has to offer. Combining the healing aspects of yoga and marijuana is just the beginning of the journey to better health. Tucson SAINTS Dispensary is located at 112 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson. Smart Choices for the Highest Level of Dental Care D

ental amalgam fillings are made with a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc. Often called “silver fillings, all dental amalgams are 45-55% elemental mercury. Mercury is the most toxic nonradioactive neurotoxin, and recognized as a chemical of major concern because it poses a dangerous threat to public health. Mercury accumulates in the body, and any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous. Mercury is continuously emitted from dental amalgam fillings, and it is absorbed and retained in the body, particularly in the brain, kidney, liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract. The output of mercury can be intensified by the number of fillings and other activities, such as chewing, teeth-grinding, and the consumption of hot liquids. Mercury is also known to be released during the placement, replacement, and removal of dental mercury amalgam fillings. Replacing failing silver amalgam fillings must be done with specific protocols to avoid patient and practitioner exposure. Dr. Wissinger provides a safe mercury removal technique, following the guidelines recommended by The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) to minimize mercury exposure.
