Try Low Level Laser Therapy for Oral Health
D
r. Nathan Conlee, Executive Director and treating physician at Winterhaven Health Center, in Tucson, advises those seeking optimum oral health to eat healthy, brush, floss and consider low level laser therapy (LLLT). “As a healthcare provider, I take a very holistic approach to help my patients. We all know we should be brushing our teeth for three minutes, two or three times per day, and flossing along with it. But other considerations for oral health include nutrition and LLLT,” explains Conlee. “Nutritionally, seek out an anti-inflammatory diet, staying away from sugar and keeping our gums healthy. Smoking and carbonated beverages (even sparkling water) are very harmful to our gums and enamel.” With reference to LLLT, research has shown this red light therapy heals the gums and drives away bacteria and viruses. LLLT is performed at home with a DPL Oral Care rechargeable unit for three to five minutes, once or twice daily. This device is $99.95, available at Winterhaven Health Center. Mention this ad and get 10 percent off. Winterhaven Health Center uses Functional Neurology, gentle chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage, nutrition, kiniesiotape and more to diagnose and treat most health issues. Copper Kills Common Cold Virus
Can copper prevent colds and other respiratory illnesses? Copper kills a wide spectrum of viruses, bacteria and fungusmicrobes, including superbugs, just by touch, according to many university and government studies. “Copper is great at killing superbugs,” says Dr. Bill Keevil, one of the early pioneers in the research. Dr. Keevil says copper kills respiratory viruses, like coronavirus 229E “which produces a range of respiratory symptoms from the common cold to more lethal outcomes such as pneumonia.” His research at the University of Southampton found that the coronavirus is rapidly destroyed on contact with copper. Many American researchers have found the same thing about other microbes, like MRSA and various flu viruses. Results like these finally explain why ancient peoples reportedly found many health uses for copper. Long before anyone knew about bacteria and viruses, Egyptians and Greeks are said to have used it to purify water and disinfect skin ulcers, and Aztecs used it against sore throats. From the Babylonian wars to the Civil War, reports say armies used copper on battlefield wounds because it allowed faster healing. It was credited with keeping copper workers from getting cholera in past epidemics. Since the recent discovery that copper quickly kills infectious disease germs, only a few hospitals have followed the advice of the EPA and switched over to copper for frequently touched surfaces. A clinical study shows this reduced the spread of illness by 58 percent. “Copper is the new gold standard for saving lives,” says writer Robert Szczerba, but he points out that many hospitals have not yet made the switch. The reasons include costs and tarnishing. The EPA tests show, however, that copper works just as well when tarnished. In 2012, when U.S. inventor Doug Cornell learned about the microbe-killing power of copper, he decided not to wait. He developed a personal device with a copper tip to use in the nose to combat cold and flu viruses and a copper handle to kill disease germs picked up on the fingers. “Over 99% of people who used it and reported results say it worked to stop a cold they felt about to start,” he says. Many people also say it has stopped flu, cold sores and sinus trouble, he reports. Visit copperzap.com for more information.See ad, page 4. 14

Chiropractic Adjustments The Power of Grief Compliment Energy Work
I
t is very important in times of loss that we allow our emotions to flow. Instead, many people stay very busy because they are frightened of the intensity of their grief. They believe if they allow the pain to surface, it will overwhelm them. Friends of the survivor will comment on how well they are doing and how brave they are when they don’t see their loved one crying. But are they really doing well? Emotions not expressed will make a person sick sooner or later. It is common in doctors’ offices to see patients where back pain, migraines or other symptoms start around the same time. Often when multiple health issues start together invariably, there will have been a major loss prior to the onset of the symptoms, such as a job, parent, spouse, child or a serious illness of a family member. When we feel our grief, we do not build up tension that can later make us sick. Additionally, we can have more compassion and empathy for others and we can serve as a role model that it is courageous and okay to grieve. Often when there has been a lifetime of holding our emotions inside, at some point the dam will break, and the feelings can be somewhat overwhelming—because instead of grieving just that event, the grief of other unresolved events will surface. If our body and spine have a lot of built up tension and pain, this will make the grieving process even more overwhelming. Regular chiropractic care keeps us flexible and at ease, so when loss hits, it doesn’t break us. Grief can be exhausting, so it is important to take extra good care of ourselves during this time. In addition to chiropractic care, meditation, yoga, support groups, journaling and counseling can be very helpful. Dr. Joanne Haupert, D.C. works at Inspired Healing, in Tucson. Connect at 520-584-0343 or InspiredHealing.org.
W
hen we think of good health, we might think of eating right and good exercise. However, while it’s important to get the heart rate up, we often forget regular stretching and manipulations to keep the spine flexible. These components are essential for longevity. Many may be skeptical about chiropractic work or even have been hurt by the manipulations. Stretching with the manipulations makes all the difference. The immediate benefit is increased oxygen to the cells, muscles, bones and organs of the body. This work can rejuvenate atrophied tissues and muscles that may not be getting proper blood flow to perform optimally. Dr. Eric Vindiola, owner of That’s the Spot Chiropractic in Tucson, has been making a remarkable difference in the movement of many people’s bodies. With a gentle, attentive and thorough manner, Vindiola works with adults, children and the elderly. When getting chiropractic from Vindiola, one lays on a table with six or seven other tables in the room, and he comes around to each table, giving each client personal and present attention to their needs. He intuitively senses very subtle things going on with the body, and offers suggestions for various stretches which could be helpful long-term. He will go as slow and gentle as need be and will not do more than the body can handle. A great chiropractor’s goal is to help free patients from pain, not make it worse. Integrating chiropractic work with energy healing can increase clients’ results considerably. Dr. Eric Vindiola, D.C. owns and operates That's The Spot Chiropractic. Avoid Pesticides to Lower Wisdom and Balance of Qigong Kids’ Risk of Depression ver 7,000 years old, the system of Zhong Yuan qigong is a complete system of self-development with roots in Shamanism, Buddhism and Taoism. Qigong is a powerful practice that brings the body into balance and can help us heal. As we practice, a calm strength begins to flow within us. Our awareness expands and we begin seeing things more clearly. Answers come into that expanded field. Grounding into the Earth, we connect to all of life. The oneness we feel is very powerful, healing emotional blockages, calming and strengthening the emotional body. This calm state is valuable when life gets hectic and feels out of control. Developing qigong wisdom though practice creates a deep meditative state, a qigong state, which helps develop our consciousness and specific areas of the brain. The connection to our higher self increases intuition and brings more creative choices to our life. Maybe even more important than for physical health, the qigong wisdom and inner balance we create will stay with us for life. As we continue practicing qigong, the wisdom and balance expand. Another reason to consider organics: A study of 529 teens and preteens linked high exposure to pesticides to a higher risk of depression. University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers studied children between 11 and 17 years old in the Ecuadorian Andes, the third-largest exporter of roses. The flowers are routinely sprayed with organophosphate insecticides known to affect the human cholinergic system, a key component in the function of the brain and nervous system. Drawing blood samples, the researchers found that teens that had lower levels of acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity resulting from pesticide toxicity showed more symptoms of depression, especially in girls and those younger than 14. The findings back up anecdotal reports from Andeans of a rise in teen depression and suicide.
Boot the Bottle for Mental Well-Being A study of 10,386 people in Hong Kong and the United States compared mental well-being among moderate drinkers and nondrinkers, with multiple-year, follow-up periods. Men and women that were lifetime abstainers had the highest levels of mental well-being, surpassed only by women that had quit drinking.

Chiropractic/ Wholistic Health Care The 6 Steps to Wellness
T
by John Keifer
he basic chiropractic philosophy is that spinal and other musculoskeletal imbalances can interfere with health and wellness. Many people associate chiropractic care with such conditions as neck and back pain, headaches, arm and leg pain and the like. However, many other conditions can affect our overall spinal, musculoskeletal and general health that may fall under the concept of wholistic health care. In addition to gentle, light force chiropractic adjustments, a number of other modalities and procedures can accelerate health and wellness, such as Applied Kinesiology, nutrition, homeopathy, detoxification, electromagnetic techniques, color, light and sound therapy, meditation, Chi Kung, exercise, neurofeedback and relaxation techniques. What is interesting, is the method of application to determine what and when to apply such modalities at the proper time. What symptoms does wholistic health care treat? While we could name a myriad of symptoms, the correct answer is, “None! We treat patients with symptoms, not symptoms with patients.” Obviously, symptoms such as pain can have an underlying and different cause from one patient to another. So, what is this method of approach that allows the practitioner to determine the priority and sequence of assessment and treatment? It is what is known as “The 6 Steps to Wellness”, founded by Dr. John Brimhall, D.C. over 40 years ago—built upon the foundation of many doctors and clinicians preceding him and beginning with the inception of chiropractic in 1895 by Dr. D.D.
Palmer. The giant contribution and discovery of Applied Kinesiology in 1964, by Dr. George Goodheart, D.C. accelerated the discovery and evolution of the 6 Steps to Wellness. When a patient is first seen, of course a thorough history and examination is performed. Standard diagnostic tests may include orthopedic, neurological, blood, hair, urine and saliva testing for various nutritional, metabolic and other imbalances. What is unique about the testing is the use of Applied Kinesiology (AK), known as “muscle testing” for various imbalance. Although a subjective assessment, to be utilized in addition to standard evaluation procedures, it does give a general indication of energetic imbalances that can contribute to health concerns. As we all know, everything is energy and nothing is not. The Chinese knew over 5,000 years ago that the body has an energy system (known as the meridians and acupuncture points) that, when out of balance with either too much or not enough energy (chi), can produce disease. AK is simply a system of quickly evaluating through muscle testing where the energy blocks are, and eliminating them for a better expression of health. More of an art than a science, muscle testing does require years of practice and experience to gain any degree of efficiency. Many people can test a muscle for a weak or strong response with varying results. There are schools of training and certification courses in AK, such as the ICAK and Touch for Health. AK is not to be confused with kinesiology, which is the study of human and non-human body movement.
The 6 Steps to Wellness In consideration of the above mentioned, the evaluation and treatment can be based upon the following parameters: • Structural: Spinal, cranial, orthopedic, organ, fascia and other problems. • Electromagnetic: Cell phones, WiFi, TV and Bluetooth can affect our energy. • Nutrition: Rebuilding the nutrition for organ/glands, including adrenal, checking for infection, digestive enzymes and bowel flora. • Allergies/sensitivities: Multiple food/environmental allergies can create inflammation and symptoms. • Emotion: Stress and aberrant emotional patterns can be identified and often balanced. • Toxins: Removing heavy metals and other toxins from the body. After identification of the above, such modalities as gentle spinal and other adjustments, cold laser, electromagnetic and detox protocols, nutrition, supplements and lifestyle changes can be made to maximize health and wellness. Dr. John Keifer, D.C. has been practicing chiropractic, applied kinesiology and wholistic health care in Tucson for over 38 years. He has obtained a fair degree of expertise that, when correlated with standard diagnostic tests, can give an indication of what level health is being compromised. Keifer practices at Keifer Wellness Center, located at 800 N. Swan Rd., Ste. 116, Tucson. Connect at 520-577-1717 or KeiferWellnessCenter.com. Mention this article for a complimentary consultation. SPINAL SOLUTIONS
Chiropractic Care Yields Unexpected Results by Marlaina Donato
hiropractors are often perceived as back pain specialists, but optimal chiropractic care treats the whole person from the inside-out, starting with the nervous system. This means practitioners can address many conditions that transcend typical expectations. The human spinal column sports 31 pairs of nerves, some corresponding directly to digestive, reproductive and respiratory organs, which might explain why regular spinal adjustments and other chiropractic techniques can be helpful for seemingly unrelated conditions like asthma, chronic headaches, hormonal imbalances and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A scientific review of 179 published papers focusing on various non-musculoskeletal conditions shows benefits of full-body chiropractic treatment for asthma, infantile colic and cervical vertigo. Results are also promising for middle ear infections in children and pneumonia in seniors. Clinical evidence suggests the nervous system is a cohesive factor in achieving overall wellness. “In chiropractic and holistic philosophy, the body is considered a self-healing organism,” explains chiropractic physician and applied kinesiologist Marc Terebelo, of the Chiropractic Wellness Center, in Southfield, Michigan. “The nervous system controls the body, so issues in the toes or fingers may be caused by spinal issues in the neck and low back. Likewise, bladder and menstrual cycle problems can be caused by injury to the low back or pelvic regions.” William J. Lauretti, a New York Chiropractic College professor in Seneca Falls, concurs with the benefits of holistic treatment. “Chiropractors view the body as an integrated unit, and problems in one

area might affect a seemingly unrelated area,” he says. “Most chiropractors have a wide variety of treatment approaches to offer, including advice on nutrition, lifestyle, stress management and exercise.”
Chiropractic and Digestion
It’s worth noting that the nerves that innervate important digestive anatomy—from the salivary glands to the stomach down through the intestinal tract—branch off the spinal cord at various levels of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. “This means that chiropractic adjustments given to [the] neck, mid-back, lower back and sacrum are important to optimal digestive function,” says chiropractor Sean Cailteux, of Exodus Health, in Shawnee, Kansas. In his practice, Lauretti has observed better digestion as a positive side effect to regular adjustments. “I’ve had a few patients over the years who reported improvement in digestive problems after chiropractic treatment of the mid- and low back. In some of those cases, the improvement was serendipitous, because the patient didn’t discuss their digestive symptoms initially, only after they noticed the improvement.”
Hope for Headaches and TMJ Dysfunction
Chronic tension headaches and migraines can become the norm for too many individuals, but chiropractic care—including spinal adjustments, nutrition advice and addressing emotional causes such as stress and anxiety—can be key in reducing pain and getting to the root of the problem. “Technically, only headaches with a list of very particular characteristics can be properly diagnosed as migraines,” Lauretti
explains. “The cause of many cases of chronic, long-term headaches is often from poor function of the muscles and joints in the neck.” These types of headaches often respond well to treatment focused on restoring normal function to the neck, he says. TMJ disorders can cause painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms, including facial and tooth pain and locking of the jaw. Chiropractic treatments often provide reliable relief. “The TMJ is a very important joint in the body, with thousands of neuroreceptors. TMJ involvements can cause headaches, particularly around the ear or side of the head, vertigo, tinnitus and other hearing issues,” says Terebelo. Cailteux notes that aside from experiencing jaw pain and headaches, someone suffering from TMJ disorder may have difficulty chewing, and may experience an audible clicking of the jaw with movement. “Chiropractic adjustments can be particularly helpful, especially when delivered to the TM joint and the neck. Gentle, soft-tissue manipulation of the muscles and tendons of the jaw, specifically the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, is also a highly effective treatment.” For a true holistic approach and lasting success, Lauretti offers this advice: “Look for a doctor who is willing to work as part of your healthcare team and who’s willing to refer you for specialty care when appropriate.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts Kryste Andrews Offers Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique
A
fter experiencing the profound healing of her first Past Life Regression with a hypnotherapist over 25 years ago, Kryste Andrews was inspired to become certified as a hypnotherapist. Many years later she discovered QHHT, the Dolores Cannon method, which focuses on past life regression and healing with the subconscious. Andrews is currently offering a special deal for clients of 50 percent off their second session. According to Andrews, a Past Life Regression can dramatically improve one’s life. Many haven’t considered that they could be negatively influenced from a past life. They could shift away from those influences in a peaceful setting, in a matter of hours. The session begins with a confidential interview, a review of one’s life starting from birth and including the important characters and issues that motivate one to seek help. Then, during the induction, one leaves behind judgment and fear and relaxes into the Theta state where past lives can surface. With her guidance, clients glide into this zone of bliss and travel in time and space to access the past life or lives that will best help. “Once you have seen all the pertinent lives, I ask your SC, the all-knowing subconscious, to come forth and answer the questions you prepared. Your SC knows all that has ever happened to your sacred soul and all that will ever take place,” explains Andrews. “When all questions have been answered by the SC, you are gently brought out of Theta and back into the Beta state of consciousness.” After the hypnosis experience, there is time for discussion with Andrews about what was learned. All sessions are tape recorded and emailed to the client for revisiting multiple times in the future. Andrews also notes that QHHT can answer questions about extraterrestrials originally populating the earth and the possibility of future lives, revealing much about our planet’s destiny. The Team at Tucson Biological Dentistry
Is A Biological Dentist Right for You? by Suzie Agrillo
C
hoosing a biological dentist doesn’t mean you will be asked to meditate and eat kale. Rather, biological dentistry is an approach to dental care that is focused on promoting overall health and wellness. A biological dentist uses minimally invasive technologies and treatments as well as biocompatible and nontoxic materials to avoid causing any adverse effects on your health. The numbers of biological dentists are growing as patients seek out technology which minimizes exposure to harmful chemicals. “Your mouth is the window to your overall health. People who are into their health want safe products in their mouths,” observes Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman, DMD, MPH, IMD. She has patients who seek out her expertise from as far away as Denmark. This native of South Bend, Indiana is the daughter of a medical doctor who practices integrative medicine, and she followed in her father’s footsteps. Krizman went to the University of Arizona, acquiring a B.S. in Microbiology and a master’s degree in Public Health with an emphasis on Environmental and Occupational Health. She attended dental school in Mesa 24

at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, followed by advanced courses at the American College of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry. She is also a Board Member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). Prior to her dental career, Krizman was a professional triathlete. She is a “scratch” golfer and attended the University of Arizona on a golf scholarship. Her team won the 1996 NCAA Women’s National Golf Championship. She was also a triathlete who competed at the national level. She achieved a top 15 finish in one of her Ironman Hawaii World Championship runs. Notwithstanding her busy dental practice, she still considers exercise an important priority. In addition to running and swimming, she rides mountain bikes with her two boys. “Maintaining good health has always been a big aspect of my life,” she reflects.
material which is BPA free, and is the least toxic, most biocompatible material for fillings. “The concern with amalgam fillings is that a small amount of mercury seeps out on a daily basis. Mercury can potentially build up throughout the body, posing a risk to health and wellness,” she advises. Krizman is one of the few dentists who is certified by the IAOMT and follows the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) amalgam removal protocol. In addition to protecting the patient and staff, she also makes sure the environment is protected by preventing mercury amalgam fragments from entering our water system.
How to Achieve a Healthier Mouth
The initial consultation at Krizman’s office lasts two hours. She tests patients with an intracellular test for their various heavy metals and essential nutrients that are required for daily cellular function. Also, she offers a dental materials biocompatibility test (involving blood work) that will determine which dental materials are most suitable for a patient—important for chemically sensitive patients. Teeth and gums are considered vital to the rest of the body. Periodontal disease can cause cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and other diseases. Infected teeth can result in high blood pressure. In addition to minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals, Krizman utilizes digital x-rays, which have a lot less radiation exposure than traditional x-rays.

Homeopathics and vitamin supplements are offered to protect a patient’s DNA from x-ray exposure as well. For implants, she uses porcelain/zirconia rather than metal/ titanium. Krizman also offers a toothpaste at her office which is safe to swallow. The office is fluoride free. “One of the most toxic elements on the periodic table is fluoride. We offer nutritional supplements that will strengthen the teeth, along with vitamin D testing,” she notes. “Many people avoid professional dental care because they are afraid to go to the dentist,” Krizman comments. She prefers using natural products and remedies while treating patients. Some of the modalities she uses to calm people down include essential oils, CBD and homeopathic products. She also utilizes “Buzzies”, which look like watches and are noninvasive and medication free. Worn on the wrists, they reduce stress and calm patients’ anxiety. Krizman also uses laser treatments, which increase bond strength after filling a tooth, sterilize it and reduce the risk of needing a root canal in the future.
Wellness Center
Krizman opened her dental practice in 2013. Because she is focused on dental health and how it relates to the rest of the body, she is now opening a Wellness Center to complement her dental office. It will offer nutritional IVs, including vitamin
C and Myer’s Cocktail; near infrared lights; far infrared saunas; hyperbaric oxygen treatment; chelation therapy; and ozone therapy. “Ozone is immensely beneficial. It stimulates the body’s natural immunity by stimulating white blood cells, and it promotes optimal circulation for tissue healing,” she says.
Laser Aesthetics
Before
Krizman offers Fontana facial laser treatments to build collagen and tighten the area around the mouth without fillers. The laser emits pulses of light to the surface of the oral cavity without damage to the tissues. Treatment of the oral cavity can result in the tightening and lifting of the nasolabial folds, mouth and cheeks. The laser can also plump the lips by delivering targeted heat pulses into the lips to stimulate new collagen formation resulting in fuller, more defined and enhanced lips. “I really enjoy what I do. It’s very gratifying when my patients return and say they had no pain after an extraction. I like to make my patients happy—I’m very patient oriented. I go to a lot of continuing education, so I can offer them the latest protocols,” Krizman relates. First and foremost, Krizman’s patients

are the reason she practices dentistry, and her admiration of them is obvious. “My patients are informed, educated and taking care of themselves to get healthy,” she acknowledges. Mouth Matters A Holistic Approach to Oral Health T
“

he mouth is the doorway to the body,” so the saying goes, and today we know just how true that is. Years ago, the biannual trip to the dentist was typically a simple “drill-andfill” operation, with other health concerns not given a second glance. Now, emerging research shows that when we neglect basic oral care—even that annoying task of nightly or post-meal flossing—we endanger our heart, lungs, kidneys and even our brains by allowing the buildup of pernicious bacteria in our gums.
26
Tucson Edition
In April, University of Louisville School of Dentistry researchers reported that the bacteria P. gingivalis, which flourishes in gum disease, was found in brain samples of deceased Alzheimer’s patients— and that inflammation, swelling and bleeding in gums can transport the bacteria from the mouth into the bloodstream simply through chewing or teeth-brushing. The study also linked the bacteria to rheumatoid arthritis and aspiration pneumonia. Advanced gum disease also increases the risk of cancer by 24 percent, especially
NaturalTucson.com
It’s part of the reason for the fresh interest in holistic dentistry, sometimes called biologic dentistry. “We look at the entire body, not just the mouth,” says Bernice Teplitsky, DDS, of Wrigleyville Dental, in Chicago, and president of the Holistic Dental Association (HDA), based in Coral Gables, Florida. Holistic dentists abstain from toxic materials, remove amalgam fillings, may be wary of root canals and focus on minimally invasive procedures—some of which may be high-tech and cutting-edge, such as lasers to clean teeth and gums, ozone therapy to slow the growth of infections and air abrasion to “sandblast” away small areas of tooth decay. Holistic dentists work closely with a wide range of other complementary practitioners. “We look at the underlying causes for gum disease and cavities: Is it your diet, or hormonal changes or acid reflux?” Patel explains. That may mean prescribing a head massage, acupuncture session, meditation lessons or dietary counseling. They may run blood tests for biocompatibility of materials and incorporate approaches from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda,

lung and colorectal cancers; quadruples the rate of kidney disease; and increases the risk of strokes, coronary artery disease, diabetes and pre-term births, other studies show. These findings have sobering implications for the nearly half of the American adults over age 30 and 70 percent of adults 65 and older with gum disease. “Science has proven that a healthy mouth is a healthy body,” says San Francisco holistic dentist Nammy Patel, author of Age With Style: Your Guide to a Youthful Smile & Healthy Living.
herbology, homeopathy, iridology, craniosacral therapy and energy medicine. They will look for signs of sleep apnea and often treat it. However, with the added tests and consultations, they tend to be more expensive, with many procedures not covered by dental insurance. Their numbers are small: Only 391 of 199,000 American dentists belong to the HDA, or about one in 500. Yet the natural health movement that drives holistic dentistry is having an effect on the profession at large. Many dentists nationwide, pressured by patients and aided by new technology, are abandoning toxic and invasive options for less harmful methods. Controversial mercury amalgam fillings are being edged out by less toxic options like resin composites that match teeth color; the amount of mercury sold in the U.S. for dental amalgams fell by half between 2001 and 2013. Conventional dental X-rays, which in a Yale study published in the American Cancer Association journal Cancer were linked to non-cancerous brain tumors, are yielding to computerized digital X-rays with a fifth of the radiation: As many as two out of three dentists have switched over. And aided by computer imaging software and 3-D printers, dentists are fabricating new crowns, implants, bridges and dentures right in the office, instead of using what Austin, Texas, dentist David Frank calls “intrusive analog [gooey impressions] that left patients feeling claustrophobic, highly anxious and consistently worried about gagging.”
What are you filling the cavity with? Just say no to amalgam, a mixture of
heavy metals, of which about half is elemental mercury that slowly releases toxic vapors. Plus, “Heavy metals can leak into the enamel tubes of the teeth causing the teeth to appear gray or dark blue and making them brittle over time,” warns Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Rhonda Kalasho. Instead, ask for relatively nontoxic options such as porcelain or composite resins, which can be made of materials such as silica, ceramic, plastics and zirconium oxide. Some composite resins contain the endocrine disrupters Bis-GMA or BPA; for extra protection, ask for one that doesn’t, or ask the dentist to use a rubber dam to prevent swallowing it.
Should I have my amalgam fillings removed? Holistic dentists like
Patel give a strong yes. “The problem arises
with mercury when you chew or brush your teeth. The abrasion creates heat and causes the mercury to off-gas. Those vapors get swallowed and go into your body, where they’re stored—and that creates significant health hazards—because we’re talking about a known poison,” she says. Other dentists disagree about removal, citing its risks: Holistic pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil, for example, writes that removing amalgam fillings is often unnecessary, costly and stressful, and recommends exchanging them for composite resin only when they break down.
Do I really need antibiotics?
Oregon State University researchers found in a study this year of 90,000 patients that the antibiotics often prescribed by dentists as prevention against infection are unnecessary 81 percent of the time, and contribute

Is a root canal the best option?
Toothpaste: Study the labels and be wary of the following ingredients: fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan and sodium hydroxide. These ingredients are a plus: baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), green tea, Eucalyptol, menthol, tea tree oil and vitamin D.
Some holistic dentists counsel against root canals, citing the risk of long-term health problems caused by lingering bacteria, and advocate the use of herbs, laser therapy or extractions instead. “If root canals were done 20 to 30 years ago, it is definitely a problem, because there were not enough technological advances to clean out all the bacteria which could cause chronic health complications,” says Patel. “Nowadays, depending on the tooth root, canals can be 99.9 percent cleaned by lasers.”
Back to the Basics
Considering the stakes, preventive care is all-important and there are many natural options to guarantee robust oral health. At the natural health store or drugstore, consider the following options:
Toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes reduced plaque 21 percent more and gingivitis 11 percent more after three months compared to manual toothbrushes, reported a

opt for super-healthy green tea as a mouthwash, as well as a drink. Studies show that it protects teeth from erosion and promotes healthy gums. Another simple option is warm salt water, using one cup of water and one-half teaspoon of salt. A 2017 study by the Cochrane medical study organization found it is virtually as effective as the prescription antiseptic mouthwash chlorhexidine in reducing dental plaque and microbes.
Flossing: Some smooth, slippery flosses
Pulling: An ancient Ayurvedic remedy, this involves swishing a spoonful of organic coconut oil around the mouth and through the teeth for 10 to 20 minutes. The oil’s lauric acid, a natural antibacterial, has been found in studies to reduce plaque formation and fungal infections, as well as the strains of bacteria linked to bad breath and irritated gums. Taking care of our teeth and gums is simply worth the daily time and trouble to facilitate long-term health. “Your oral care should be taken just as seriously as watching your diet,” advises Kalasho.

ut health has become the new health buzz, and for good reason because, like Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” An often overlooked component of the gut is the oral cavity. The mouth is the first meeting place between the alimentary canal (the entire passage along which food passes through the body), the immune system and the outside world. The mouth has its own microbiome that directly impacts our gut and overall health. Our mouths contain hundreds of beneficial and unhealthy bacteria. If our mouths are not well cared for, the unhealthy bacteria can become overpopulated and enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums or unhealthy gum tissue, disrupting balance and putting us at risk for heart disease, stroke and many other health consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of American adults suffer from gum disease and many people do not know they have it. Periodontal disease includes bleeding gums,
gingivitis, gum recession and bone loss. These periodontal issues can be prevented and controlled with good oral hygiene. The following steps are recommended to ensure that our mouth and oral microbiome are in great shape. • Swish the mouth with a pH balanced rinse to create an alkaline state. • Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria. • Brush gums to stimulate the gum tissue. • Brush and floss daily. • Use a water flosser to flush out bacteria below the gum line. • Swish for 30 seconds with an alcohol-free mouthwash. BARKING UP THE RIGHT TREE
The Medicinal Value of Bark
W
by J. Garnet
ith many Americans moving toward natural medicine, alternatives to pharmaceuticals are being sought out. Many choices are available and becoming more mainstream, but there are still some that are just emerging here in the U.S., even though they’ve been in practice for thousands of years. Long before pharmaceuticals became available to humans, plants, herbs, flowers, fruits, vegetables and even trees were the go-to remedy for countless ailments. Trees have been revered since perhaps the beginning of the human race. They’re tall and sturdy. They offer shade on a hot sunny day. They produce oxygen. Trees can support a swing or a treehouse. There are people who’ve been called tree-huggers because they respect the bountiful gifts which trees offer humanity, and the planet itself. According to BBC News and Science and Environment, the oldest living thing on the planet is a tree. 30
Tucson Edition
A comprehensive study published in the Journal of Sustainable Forestry states that there are over 60,000 different species of trees on earth. A fig tree in Sri Lanka is at least 2,224 years old. In Chile, there’s a Patagonian cypress tree that’s over 3,600 years old. An ancient bristlecone pine named Methuselah, in the White Mountains of California, was discovered to be just under 5,000 years old. Since Methuselah’s discovered age, another bristlecone pine, unnamed, was discovered in the Inyo National Forest and is over 5,000 years old. Trees should be revered, and tree-huggers have had the right idea all along—because coupled with being ancient, they offer numerous medicinal compounds that can be helpful in the shift to natural plant medicine. According to a CNN article, “From a Tree, a Miracle called Aspirin”, by Elizabet Landau, one of the oldest uses for tree medicine dates back to 3000 BC, when the Ancient Egyptians used the bark of the

willow tree for an analgesic. Hippocrates, the Greek physician who lived from 460377 BC, also noted that the leaves and bark of the willow tree not only relieved pain but also helped in reducing fevers. Most parts of the willow tree contain the acid, salicylic. It wasn’t until thousands of years later, in the early 1800s, that the acid was isolated by French scientist Henri Leroux. With the discovery, aspirin was created. Through the years, the benefits of aspirin have been uncovered. Not only does it reduce pain and fever, but it also helps thin the blood, which helps with the prevention of blood clots and heart attacks. Native Americans and indigenous tribes around the globe found a number of medicinal properties in many other trees. Bark has been used to help with inflammation, high blood pressure and arthritis. In more recent years, bark has even been used in some cancer treatments. It’s not very common in today’s society to view a tree as part of the make-up of herbal and plant medicine. Its uses, however, can be in the form of poultices, tinctures, salves and as a wash to fight off infection from open wounds. One tree that people are familiar with is the Scottish pine, better known as the Christmas tree, which isn’t well known as a medicinal tree. The pine’s bark and leaves can be made into a tea that is used for an internal antiseptic, a diuretic and for lung health, especially as an expectorant. It can also be made into a salve that can help with arthritis pain. Like the Scottish pine, bark from the ash tree can be used to reduce the swelling caused by arthritis, rheumatism in particular. Birch tree bark can be added to a bath and helps ease the effects of different skin conditions including rashes, eczema and psoriasis. The bark from maple trees is made into a tea and used to treat kidney disease and bronchitis. Elder bark is used to

treat headaches and symptoms that accompany allergies and chest colds. It’s also used to bring on perspiration, which lowers fever. There are numerous uses of bark for many different ailments and conditions. So how does one get the bark, especially from trees that aren’t grown in the region where they reside? As parts of the planet are brought closer together through technology, many ingredients from tree bark, leaves and sap are now available online. Make certain that the online company is reputable and that their products are third party tested. For the adventurous type of person, foraging bark from local trees for medicine is an option. Precautions must be taken when collecting bark from a tree. Like the human skin, a tree’s bark is the outer covering for the vital processes that take place within. Without the skills to harvest bark safely, a tree can become wounded and die. Very small pieces of the bark should be removed from a living tree. Collecting bark from branches and trees that have fallen naturally is recommended for the novice forager. J. Garnet, M.A., is an educator and freelance writer. annabinoids are a derivative of hemp and marijuana. Over 100 different chemical compounds (cannabinoids) have been found in these plants, with a wide range of medicinal properties and effects. Two of the main cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC). These two compounds are the most studied as they are the most abundant cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD is great for treating acute and chronic pain. Cannabinoids work because the human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that mediates key psychological and cognitive functions like mood, immune system, pain sensation, appetite, sleep and metabolism. Our ECS is made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors receive and regulate cannabinoids. Studies have shown that cannabinoids have analgesic (pain reliving) and anti-inflammatory qualities and capabilities. Some of the many ways cannabinoids can help reduce back pain include: reducing inflammation in the body; relieving stress; resetting sleep patterns, as better sleep means better recovery and less stress; and reducing anxiety, as anxiety is usually related to upper back and neck stiffness. Studies have shown that high doses of cannabinoids can help treat Degenerative Disc Disease, and can help accelerate the process of bone healing and make bones stronger. Most people with chronic pain are prescribed harsh, opioid-based pain pills that are toxic on the liver and very addictive. Cannabinoids have been shown to help fight opioid addiction and also rejuvenate and detox the liver. CBD, combined with exercise and a healthy diet, can help us get the natural relief we are looking for. Divine Synergy Therapeutics & CBD is located at 143 S. Park Ave., Tucson. emember the first few days of school, college or work? The excitement because of the newness of it, the eagerness to jump right in? The same could be said about a driver’s license, or receiving a new medical marijuana card. After obtaining any certification, license or marijuana card, there’s a level of responsibility that comes along with having them. As a new driver, the lives and safety of people in neighboring cars, and pedestrians crossing the road, fall partly on the driver. As a certified medical marijuana card holder, a responsibility is involved as well. Card holders can’t just dive into the marijuana world headfirst. The next step after obtaining a marijuana card is to become familiar with the numerous products that can aid in helping and healing the body. The excitement and sense of relief of having a card can quickly change to feelings of being overwhelmed and confused. How does a new card holder begin? Being an advocate for one’s own physical, mental and spiritual health is somewhat like going to a physician for treatment, which will most likely include a prescription drug. There is often a trial and error process when finding the exact medicine and dosage. The same is also true for finding the right marijuana strain and product. There are decisions that need to be made when choosing marijuana as a medicine. How will the medicine get into someone’s system? Will the marijuana be smoked, eaten, applied topically or will it be drops of oil under the tongue? A marijuana dispensary has many options available, so decisions can be made that fall into the patient’s comfort zone. Not only must it be decided how to take the medicine, but the choice of marijuana strains will include a trial and error period. Sativa strains are good for boosting energy, but should be taken with caution for people suffering from stress and anxiety. Indica strains are best for those who suffer from anxiety, stress and chronic pain. Indicas can cause sleepiness, so again caution should be used when choosing this type. There are many strains that combine Sativa and Indica components. These are called hybrids and can be very effective, offering the benefits of both without the extremes of just one. This process of finding the right medicine can be difficult, however there is information available to help ease the process. Earth’s Healing offers new patients a tracking sheet where they can enter information regarding strains and how they worked or didn’t work. By using this tracking method, the time it takes to find the right product can be reduced, rather than trying numerous strains randomly. It’s a big job to be an advocate for individual healthcare. The rewards are many, however, once methods of use and specific products are identified for treating disease and illness in a natural, plant-based way. For more information and education, visit Earth’s Healing Dispensary, conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., Tucson. Connect at EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 31.

ingredients are a critical component of Ayurveda, according to Alter, author of What to Eat for How You Feel: The New Ayurvedic Kitchen. She says, “Well-prepared food is easy to digest and protects prana—the food’s living force or energy— so it can nourish and energize.” Ayurveda also focuses on the “six tastes” ideally present in every dish: sweet, sour, salty, astringent, bitter and pungent. “Western cuisine has a strong salty and sweet bias. Health issues arise from an imbalanced palate,” says Shah. Alter adjusts taste profiles according to the season and the individual’s dosha. “Bitter foods can be very cleansing and help eliminate winter sluggishness. More pungent foods are good in the spring, when the body may feel congested and heavy after winter,” she says. To address diners’ differing doshas at her restaurant, Divya’s Kitchen, Alter focuses on seasonal dishes that incorporate all six tastes. “By definition, these are tri-doshic foods which can balance all three dosha types.” Good tri-doshic foods include asparagus in spring, berries in summer and root vegetables in winter. “Cooked leafy greens can also be tri-doshic,” says Alter, adding that spices can tweak the natural dosha effect of a given food.
Ancient Cooking for Modern Lifestyles Ayurveda’s rules of the kitchen—such as avoiding cold, raw, processed or microwaved foods, not combining fruits with other foods, and making lunch the heaviest meal of the day—can run counter to the typical Western diet, but with time, Ayurvedic cooking can become intuitive. Ayurvedic meals don’t need to be complicated or challenging to prepare. “A simple apple or plain rice can nourish us,” says Shah. One of Alter’s favorite recipes is an apple or pear stewed with cloves, prepared and eaten first thing in the morning to stimulate the digestive system. Plain almonds are another good protein snack, especially in aiding digestion when soaked and peeled, she advises.

Food should bring joy, and bring us back in tune with our bodies.
~Nishita Shah A “Buddha bowl” packed with colorful, sautéed vegetables, lentils and a grain like quinoa, barley or millet makes for a simple, nourishing, well-balanced meal, says Shah. “I try to add just enough spice to enhance the flavor, while still being able to taste the sweetness of a carrot or the bitterness of chard.” A cook’s mindset is as important as the meal itself, say Ayurvedic practitioners. Alter believes mindfulness while cooking and eating not only enhances our experience, but also our digestion. Ayurvedic cooking should be fun, ignite curiosity and taste great—not feel restrictive or lack flavor, says Shah. “Food should bring joy, and bring us back in tune with our bodies. Our bodies are smart and will tell us what they need.” April Thompson is a freelance writer in Washington, D.C. Connect at AprilWrites.com.

The Beginner’s Ayurvedic Kitchen
he rules of Ayurvedic cooking can seem overwhelming, but there are simple ways to start aligning our diet with its principles. “There is a profound knowledge behind Ayurvedic cooking, but the methods of preparation are easy; you don’t need to be a skilled chef,” says chef, restauranteur and author Divya Alter. “One portion of food should fit in your hands when cupped together,” says Nishita Shah, of The Ayurvedic Institute. “Any more is going above and beyond what the body needs and can handle.” “Energetic imbalances can fluctuate, so what you need now doesn’t have to be what you eat for the rest of your life,” says Alter. Shah uses color to guide her cooking, declaring a dish done when its greens are at peak vibrancy. Alter stresses eating according to the strength of your digestion. “Someone with a fiery or strong digestion may need to eat heavier foods and more frequent meals.” Cooking with fresh, high-quality and ideally, organic ingredients is key. Food should be prepared soon after purchase and consumed soon after preparation to maximize flavors and nutrition. Ayurvedic cooking enhances natural flavors, while optimizing digestion, nutrient absorption and waste elimination. “How you experience food after a meal is just as important as how you feel while eating it. Deep frying, charring or cooking at high temperatures makes food hard to digest, overheats the liver and causes acidity,” says Alter.

Ayurvedic Recipe Golden Milk
Vata, Pitta and Kapha pacifying Golden milk is an age-old recipe that nourishes the body on many levels. Turmeric helps reduce inflammation, ghee distributes the healing properties throughout the body and tryptophan in the milk will encourage sleep. It is calmative, restorative and delicious. Make this a vegan drink by substituting milk and ghee with almond oil and a dairy alternative such as almond milk, hemp milk or coconut milk made without zinc oxide. Yields: 1 serving 6 to 8 oz whole-fat goat’s milk for Kapha and Pitta or cow’s milk for Vata ½ tsp ghee ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp ginger powder 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 pinch ground cinnamon 1 pinch ground nutmeg (to promote sleep) 1 small piece jaggery [sugar] (optional) Add all the ingredients to a small pot. Over medium-high heat, bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for a minute or two. Pour into a mug and drink before bed. To enjoy this drink during the day, leave out the nutmeg. Tip: If experiencing constipation, adding more ghee to the milk will help.

nflammation is the body’s natural response when we are injured, infected or have a foreign entity present. Our white blood cells go into action and release proteins and blood flow to the injured area to protect it. This process helps our bodies heal. The downside is that inflammation is unpleasant and causes swelling and pain. When the body is experiencing pain, many run to the medicine cabinet for an aspirin, ibuprofen, steroid or a pain pill. Others are treating their pain and inflammation with cannabis. “I have successfully gotten off of all opioids and Advil. Now, I solely use cannabis. My treatment plan has gone from taking a handful of pills to using a natural product that doesn’t negatively affect my liver. It’s safe and I’m not addicted to pills anymore,” says a patient at Tucson SAINTS Dispensary. The two cannabinoids that are responsible for a decrease in swelling in cannabis are THC and CBD. Both THC and CBD release neurotransmitters throughout our bodies that help with pain, inflammation, mood and sleep. THC is the molecule that attaches to the receptors in our brains and makes us feel “high”. If too much THC enters our bodies, it can make us feel nervous, anxious or paranoid. CBD, however, does not give that euphoric feeling, but it helps with anxiety, pain, arthritis, stomach issues, nerve pain, sleeplessness and inflammation, with little to no side effects. When the entire plant is used, cannabinoids and terpenes work together allowing the compounds to influence each other. This is often referred to as the entourage effect: meaning that the compounds work better than separately. In simple terms, it’s best to use both THC and CBD together, instead of just using THC or pure CBD, for treating a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Cannabis works well for patients who have colitis, IBS, other stomach disorders, pain, arthritis and migraines, and is known to help assist in the healing process. There are many different products—containing both THC and CBD—sold at Tucson SAINTS Dispensary that help patients with pain and inflammation, including tinctures, cannabis flower, salves/topicals, inhalers, patches and concentrates. SAINTS Dispensary is located at 112 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson. Connect at 520-886-1003 or TucsonSaints.com. See ad, page 39.

Smart Choices for the Highest Level of Dental Care D
ental amalgam fillings are made with a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc. Often called “silver fillings, all dental amalgams are 45-55% elemental mercury. Mercury is the most toxic nonradioactive neurotoxin, and recognized as a chemical of major concern because it poses a dangerous threat to public health. Mercury accumulates in the body, and any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous. Mercury is continuously emitted from dental amalgam fillings, and it is absorbed and retained in the body, particularly in the brain, kidney, liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract. The output of mercury can be intensified by the number of fillings and other activities, such as chewing, teeth-grinding, and the consumption of hot liquids. Mercury is also known to be released during the placement, replacement, and removal of dental mercury amalgam fillings. Replacing failing silver amalgam fillings must be done with specific protocols to avoid patient and practitioner exposure. Dr. Wissinger provides a safe mercury removal technique, following the guidelines recommended by The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) to minimize mercury exposure.
