I

knew I had to write an endorsement this month despite the fact that Natural Awakenings typically steers away from politics. I am under no illusion that my small but earnest publication holds any sway among the Tucson electorate, but I do believe that silence is complicity and that every voice matters. A few weeks ago, I imagined this space enumerating a long list of indictments against the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the party he represents. But I felt uneasy with that idea, and, just last week, I realized why: The Law of Attraction. This fundamental law states that like attracts like. Yet we often find that, as much as we dislike somebody, someHolly Baker, publisher thing, or some situation, we get more of it, not less. The reason is that our minds are more focused on the negative—what we don’t want—versus the positive—what we do want. And negative minds attract more negative realities. Accordingly, my “endorsement” is to ask you to vote for what you want, not what you don’t want. In other words, the state of mind you bring to the polling booth should be one of love, not fear; of hope, not despair. Whether you vote in person or by mail, I urge you to take whatever time you need to generate positive feelings and not commit the act of voting with a negative mind. While I know this might be difficult to do, remember the truism articulated by philosopher and paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Dr. Wayne Dyer’s elaboration on this pronouncement is further instructive: The non-spiritual being hates evil and is determined to eradicate that which he believes to be evil. The spiritual being knows that everything that he hates and fights weakens him, and that all that he is for empowers him. The non-spiritual being knows what he hates, and much of his energy, both mental and physical, is devoted to fighting what he perceives to be bad or evil. Spiritual beings do not order their lives to be against anything. They work for what they are for rather than fighting what they’re against. So, with a month to go before election day, I encourage you to start now. Generate positive feelings throughout the month so that, by the time November 3rd rolls around, perhaps we can collectively generate a tidal wave of positivity that drives more positive people to the polls. Remember: Like attracts like. If you spend October criticizing, decrying, screaming, abhorring and hating, what type of voters do you think are going to show up in waves? Finally, I also urge everyone to contemplate and meditate on the idea of a society that is based much more upon the Divine Feminine than ours is now. In an interview with Bustle Digital Group, Suzanne Kingsbury said, “Consciousness is basically divided up into the masculine side and the feminine side, and we need both to achieve our highest creative potential.” She points out aspects of the Divine Feminine that I encourage you to repeat, like a mantra, to attract what many of us ultimately want on November 3rd—empathy, compassion, creativity, community and collaboration. Please repeat them throughout the morning, afternoon and evening. Then, let’s reap what we sow. With a hopeful heart,

Vegan Ranch Salad Dressing and Dip

I

n our warm weather climate, there is nothing so satisfying as a crisp salad or steamed veggie with a tasty dressing. Try this vegan version of Ranch Dressing for your next meal. 1 ½ cup raw cashew pieces ¾ cup water 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp sea salt 1 pinch hing ¼ cup fresh dill or 2 tsp dry dill (can substitute parsley if needed) Soak the raw cashews in hot water for 10 minutes (or boil for 5 minutes). Drain cashews and add to blender. Add remaining ingredients, except the dill, and blend until super smooth. Pulse in the dill or just add to mixture. The dressing will keep for five days in fridge. Beat the Joint Pain Woes

jopanuwatd/AdobeStock.com

D

ealing with joint pain? As we age, it seems more of us feel aches and twinges in various joints. The number one area is knees, followed by shoulders and hips. Joints we use every day to move, get out of bed, walk anywhere, drive and eat can become inflamed and sore, either daily or only occasionally. A joint can be in pain due to direct trauma, a chronic use issue or an infection. Bones can often hurt if the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) around them have pulled too much in one direction or another. Whiplash is a classic case of this. What can we do? Or rather, what haven’t we tried? Most of us have tried ice, rest, topical balms or gels, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture or physical therapy— all good ideas. We should also take out inflammatory foods, quit drinking sodas (they cause gout, which causes joint pain), stretch regularly and practice yoga. After trying all of these things and still having life disrupting pains or chronic nagging aches, consider ProloOzone. Developed over the last 35 years by Dr. Frank Shallenberger, MD, ProloOzone is a combination of oxygen therapies and homeopathics. Ozone therapies are safe, completely nontoxic, easy to use, inexpensive and have very favorable effects on autoimmune disease, cancer, arthritis, infections, inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease and chronic and acute pain. ProloOzone is combining oxygen, making it into ozone, then adding it in with homeopathics and vitamins as an injection. These minimally done injections can relieve pain, clear up inflammation and over time, rebuild cartilage and ligaments. These can be done as a first line treatment for acute injuries or can be done years later to clear up scar tissue and chronic pain. DeeAnn G. Saber, NMD works at Transformational Medicine, located at 3861 N. First Ave., Tucson. She is offering free, 30-minute consults to clients who want to see if ProloOzone is right for them. mind, Wilson spent more than 30 years dedicated to the study of human physiology, psychology and the pathways that connect them together. As a clinician in private practice, not only did he successfully treat individuals plagued with ongoing conditions, but also spent his lifetime creating ways for patients and everyone to understand how environmental stresses are directly related to harmful reactions in our body. As a researcher, Wilson has focused on and written about the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). The HPA axis is an interactive neuroendocrine unit comprised of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the adrenal glands. Evidence shows that the HPA axis plays key roles in basal homeostasis and in the body's response to stress. The adrenal glands are necessary for the body to produce hormones that it cannot live without. Cortisol is one of the primary hormones produced by the adrenal glands and, as a result of stress over time, can become dysfunctional and produce too much or too little of this essential hormone. In Wilson’s book, Adrenal Fatigue: the 21st Century Stress Syndrome, he aims at educating the reader and providing the most effective ways to support adrenal glands and address other

he effects of long-term stress on the body can often result in physical and mental fatigue, unexplained weight loss or gain, cravings, interrupted sleep patterns and other health issues that for many, remain unaddressed. These seemingly separate and unrelated symptoms have long been plaguing a significant part of our population, James Wilson and many have spent decades searching for relief. Some rely on traditional means and healthcare professionals for answers, and some take years to research their own symptoms, only to find an unclear path to wellness. Dr. James Wilson, ND, DC, PhD, has committed his life as a professional healer to searching for ways to help people with many of these issues. Several of his patients finally came to him with all options exhausted and still fighting the continued negative impact on their lives. As a result of his passion and inquisitive 10

health issues through the direct connection between diet, exercise and mental well-being. Not only has it been a blessing to many individuals, but healthcare professionals also refer to the book’s information as a basis for treating patients and understanding the underlying links between the environment and our wellness. Some may say that Wilson’s most important legacy is his formulations. Generated through years of clinical treatment, research and continued education, he has successfully created not only a line of products that address adrenal fatigue, but also other physical ailments that are all connected to the synergy and homeostasis of the body, including immune health, blood sugar balance and digestive system wellness. Using the finest quality raw materials, and sourced from around the globe, Wilson's formulas contain only vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are selected for their bioavailability so that the body is able to absorb and utilize these nutrients most effectively. These days, Wilson can be found serving as the President and Chief Formulator of Dr. Wilson’s Original Formulations, and has successfully carried on his work through the company he founded in 1997. Both the company’s corporate office and distribution centers are owned and operated locally in Tucson for over 20 years. Ryan Brown, General Manager, has been working with Wilson for more than 12 years and continues to support the legacy established through a passion for helping individuals who suffer from various issues and providing the highest quality and most effective products available.

Brown is cGMP compliant and certified, and ensures that all products are FTC and FDA compliant for product integrity and quality assurance. He has worked with a team of professionals to reach as many individuals as possible who can benefit from the products, as well as the educational and protocol platforms available. According to Brown, Dr. Wilson’s Adrenal Fatigue Protocol is now sold in over 50 states and 13 countries, including Canada and Australia. Through continued work with other healthcare providers, these products are also used as a foundational protocol for many naturopaths, chiropractors, pharmacies and other natural healing professionals. “The brand has been in growth mode for 23 years,” says Brown. “We continue to serve significant portions of the populations who have searched for help through traditional channels with no success. Oftentimes, we are a last resort for those who cannot find help elsewhere.” Brown says, “Most of the company’s growth can be attributed to word-of-mouth and product efficacy with our customers." Natural and homeopathic supplements are not subject to the rigorous process that other over-the-counter drugs or pharmaceuticals are. So, this suggests that the credibility and success of these products can only be attributed to its true ability to successfully address the issues that afflict people and provide substantial evidence for a clearer path to health. As we are all aware, this year has been trying for many. The consistent correlation between how we manage our health and the environment can be seen in almost everything we do. It is satisfying to know that there are ways to keep our bodies as healthy and safe as possible during the many stresses we encounter. Being well educated and understanding how we can all serve our bodies to ensure the highest level of health possible is the key to continued wellness. Dr. James Wilson’s book, Adrenal Fatigue, as well as supplements and quizzes to help the reader understand these connections, can be found at AdrenalFatigue.org and DrWilsons. com. of people experience the physical backlash of emotional stress in the form of headaches, chronic migraines, fatigue, digestive woes, muscle tension, dizziness and changes in libido. Research published this year in the Journal of the American Heart Association shows that children that experience severe adversity or live with alcoholics or drug addicts are at a 50 percent higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease later in life. Experts agree that this statistic goes beyond poor lifestyle choices, and might point to a biological inability to cope with everyday pressures. Working with—rather than against—the body’s nervous system by employing lifestyle changes, releasing trauma and considering options like a nourishing diet, safe herbal options and gentle energy modalities can help to break a vicious cycle.

Gut Instincts

Calm Down Taming the Flames of Stress-Related Illness

W

by Marlaina Donato

e are beings of neurochemical and hormonal intricacy, and within this mixed bag of biology lies our magic. Our human experience is visceral; we cry from sadness and joy, flush from embarrassment, laugh with amusement and exhibit quirky mannerisms when we lie. Whether we see it as a blessing or a curse, we’re hardwired to embody the sacred fire of our emotions. It also means that stress and our bodies are in perpetual partnership. “Systematically, the mind and body work together. Grabbing your belly when you hear bad news and saying, ‘I feel sick,’ or having ‘butterflies in your stomach’ are a testament to how everyday stress affects us physically,” says Stephanie Mansour, Chicago fitness expert and host of the national PBS show Step It Up With Steph. “Stress serves a useful purpose by increasing alertness—the sometimes lifesaving ‘fight-or-flight’ response—but chronic stress leads to elevated stress hormones like cortisol and catecholamines,” says emergency room physician Thomas Krisanda, at Northwest Hospital, in Randallstown, Maryland. “Cortisol can elevate blood glucose and suppress the immune system. Elevated catecholamines raise blood pressure and stress the heart. Over time, this can lead to hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes or strokes.” According to The American Institute of Stress, 77 percent 12

Studies involving both mice and humans show that beneficial gut microorganisms are altered by emotional stress. The same bacteria responsible for bolstering the body’s fortress of immunity also generate neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurochemicals in the gut’s enteric nervous system control major biological functions that include heart rate, sleep cycles, muscle movement and mood. While commonly prescribed antibiotics eradicate infectious invaders, they also kill off beneficial bacteria and neurotransmitters, opening the door to depressive disorders. Because approximately 95 percent of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut, it’s not surprising that overuse of antibiotics has been associated with mental health conditions. British research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 2015 documents case-control studies over an 18-year period involving 202,974 patients with depression. The findings show a high risk for anxiety and depression following repeated antibiotic use. Connecting the dots further, 2018 research published in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology correlates compromised intestinal permeability with a weakened blood-brain barrier and alcohol addiction. Research published in 2014 in the journal PLOS One involving patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) reveals abnormalities in catecholamines, elevated plasma cortisol and hyperactivity of the amygdala—the part of the brain that can become stuck on overdrive from trauma and other life stresses. In a nutshell, negative emotional states can suppress immunity and foster more frequent antibiotic prescriptions and in turn, promote neurological loops of chronic depression and anxiety, and even more compromised immune response. Functional gastrointestinal disorders like IBS and inflammation-driven Crohn’s disease are often exacerbated by emotional upset and improved with stress management techniques like biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, hypnotherapy, meditation and breath work.

One Body, Many Selves

Resolving emotional trauma can offer unexpected hope for conditions that elude improvement or scientific understanding. A deeper look into how unrecognized or unreleased emotional pain can contribute to disease might help to solve the riddle of digestive problems, eczema, inflammatory bowel conditions and pain syndromes, includ-

ing the multi-system agonies of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. It’s a widespread misunderstanding that psychosomatic (mind-body) health conditions are imaginary or the product of mental instability. In actuality, the term psychosomatic simply refers to physical diseases with no organic origin that are presumed to have unconscious emotional taproots. “We are made up of different types of energy,” explains LaStacia Ross, a reiki master and sound healer at Eclectic Soul Studio, in Pittsburg, Kansas. “Physical or sensory energy is the energy of the physical body. Our outer energy field is subtle energy which consists of layers and includes thoughts and emotions. I like to think of the subtle energy field as a library containing the records of everything we’ve ever experienced.” Reiki, a form of non-touch therapy, is now deemed valuable by many respected hospitals, like the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in Manhattan. Springboarding from the philosophy that we are trinities of body, mind and spirit, reiki and other forms of energy medicine aim to encourage the flow of vital life force. Ross, who also uses sound resonance via tuning forks in her work, has witnessed significant improvement in her clients. “Energy work can help release stored energetic patterns of trauma and stress that no longer serve us,” she says. “Relaxation is an immediate benefit of energy work. People often feel a huge mental weight lifted and report pain relief, sometimes after just one session.” Despite the many gains of energy work, Ross emphasizes individual timing. “On a subconscious level, pain or illness can serve us in some way without us realizing it. Sometimes we’re not ready to work through our issues or let them go, even if we think we are.”

Investing in Equilibrium

Stress-induced psychosomatic illness does not discriminate, and even affects members of the medical field. A 2009 study published in the Indian Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that professional burnout in nurses can manifest as back and neck pain, acidity, anger and impaired memory. Krisanda underscores the importance of self-care in all walks of life. “If you don’t take care of yourself, you are useless to care

for others. Adopt a healthy diet and exercise and make it a routine. We live in a very materialistic society, and I believe this also leads to stress, unhappiness and a sense of being entitled and never being satisfied. Just let go.” He also stresses the importance of support. “An emergency room is an incredibly hectic, frightening and sometimes violent place. I rely on my colleagues, and we support each other. For me, the most important thing is to realize that I’m not in it alone.” Krisanda also finds balance by taking a few minutes in a quiet place to collect his thoughts and enjoy a peaceful moment. Basic, whole foods can help to maintain homeostasis. “Make sure that food is fueling you,” says Mansour. “Cooked vegetables and broths are very soothing. Instead of a juice cleanse or an extreme diet, focus on nourishing, calming foods like soups, lean proteins to stabilize blood sugar levels and healthy fats to support brain function. Reducing alcohol can help improve liver function.” Sarah Kate Benjamin, a holistic chef and herbalist in Sebastopol, California, finds her own healing rhythms by eating with the seasons and using medicinal plants in inspired, everyday dishes. Coauthor of The Kosmic Kitchen Cookbook: Everyday Herbalism and Recipes for Radical Wellness, she sees herbs as life-giving examples of resilience. “Herbs have been here long before us and have experienced their own form of stressors. Working with nervous system-supportive herbs in my food, beverages or even as tinctures really help me find balance when I’m overwhelmed.” Some of her allies are oat tops, lemon balm, skullcap, chamomile and passionflower. For Benjamin, everyday choices play a huge role in healing. “Making small lifestyle shifts in your work or home life can really help you move into a more relaxed state. I like to think of it as a sort of mantra: ‘Help the herbs help you,’” she says. In a world that is fixated on external validation, little things matter. “If I give myself permission to do the things that really nourish me, I’ll be the best version of myself. Perhaps most importantly, I will like me, and that matters tremendously.” Marlaina Donato is an author and recording artist. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

Can We Find Peace in this Chaos?

T

by Maria Kingsley

he world is calling for peace, and yet it seems so elusive. Stress, fear, anxiety, anger and discord is all around us, and we notice the negative effects on our lives. It is not healthy and cannot be maintained for a long time without having serious consequences. We may have already experienced some. Where do we go? Who do we turn to? There is a higher Intelligence who is always there when we ask and listen. It is helpful to remember that we are not alone in this world. Even though we have not trusted it much, now is a good time to ask. Trusting our higher Intelligence that has our best interest in mind brings great benefits the world does not offer. Many people use prayer or meditation. Others use music or meditative activities to allow their busy minds to settle and quiet down. Therapy or counseling is another way. A loving Intelligence is aware of our difficulties and can give gentle guidance in ways that we may not even have thought of. Yet, we need to ask and listen. The asking is not demanding, but allowing the gentle nudge or intuition to come into our listening mind. It is very reassuring to know that there is help available. We have abandoned it, but higher Intelligence will never leave us. Let’s bring it back into our life. Maria Kingsley is a hypnotherapist and Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner. heart to divine love. As guide and teacher Harold Klemp writes in The Spiritual Laws of Life, “Gratitude unseals fountains of creativity, because a grateful person is relaxed.” Singing or chanting the word HU. HU (which rhymes with the word you) is an ancient, universal name for God that can open the heart to divine love and insight. Singing the word HU, inwardly or aloud, can attune anyone to a higher consciousness where calm prevails. More information on HU—plus an inspiring recording of thousands chanting it—is online at HearHU.org. Download the free HU app for Android or Apple (search for HU, keyword Eckankar).

Embracing Joy and Strength when Times Are Tough by Elle Maurene

E

ach of us is really a divine, unique, shining spiritual being: soul. Soul exists because God loves it. The challenges of life can tempt anyone to forget that birthright of joy and spiritual freedom. But accepting that birthright—really taking it to heart—helps show how tough times provide an opportunity to build inner strength.

Eckankar, the Path of Spiritual Freedom, offers tools for anyone to transform their life into a place of peace, resilience and growth. Gratitude. Thinking, writing or saying all the things one is grateful for shifts the energy from “poor little me” to “look what bounties I have in my life”. It opens the

Repeating a sacred, meaningful phrase that strikes a spiritual image in the consciousness. People have done this throughout history. Sometimes it is called prayer. The ancient Chinese ECK Master Lai Tsi offered this verse (in The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad, Book Two): “Show me Thy ways, O Sugmad; Teach me Thy path. Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me; On Thee do I wait all day. Remember, O Beloved, Thy guiding light And Thy loving care. For it has been ever Thy will, To lead the least of Thy servants to Thee!”

Since Sugmad is another name for God, one can substitute the word God, Lord or whatever word for the Divine feels right. Spiritual exercises. Daily spiritual exercises (including singing HU) tune us into God’s love. The Spiritual Exercises of ECK promote higher levels of awareness that give access to divine creativity for solving problems and building spiritual stamina. Compassion. Spiritual exercises let the heart open to compassion for all life. Compassion consumes the heart with love, leaving no room for stress. Surrender. Spiritual surrender means giving one’s worries and cares to God and aligning the personal, human self with soul. It does not mean giving up free will but, rather, allowing the Divine to flow through every thought, word and deed. Acting consciously as a vehicle for God’s love dissolves fear and lifts the heart. Staying spiritually strong, free and focused. Keeping focused on something higher than life’s challenges is a priceless, strengthening discipline. Spiritual contemplation, singing HU, embracing gratitude and practicing compassion and surrender to the Divine all lift us above the daily grind. Soul—our true self—has the spiritual resources to stay balanced and happy even in tough times.

Stress Relief and Cannabis Retreats

or stress, there are a variety of tools for relief. Nature, meditation, breath work, herbs, nutrition, body work, essential oils—these are just some of those tools. Natural Healing Care Center (NHCC), in Tucson, understands that, and that is why they take a multifaceted approach to stress relief. Incorporating more than one method of relief will not only relax the mind and

body, but it will also foster the confidence for preventative relief. The more we utilize these tools for stress relief in our daily routines, the easier it is to maintain a level of inner peace and function at a higher vibrational frequency, as we were meant to be. NHCC carries a variety of herbs and hemp CBD products that aid in stress relief, along with services including acupunc-

ture, guided meditation sessions, intro to yoga and breath work, cannabis (medical marijuana) certifications and consultations, plant medicine seminars, cannabis retreats, naturopathic medicine and more. All products have been used by staff and come doctor recommended, with money-back guarantees on some of the CBD products. Acupuncture is a very effective tool for stress relief. There are different meridian points that bring relaxation to the nervous system. This can be achieved with an individual session with the practitioner, or in a group setting during certain meditation sessions. The guided meditation sessions are a new introduction to the list of services at NHCC, but they have been met with great response from the community. With guided meditation, clients are given the tools to calm the mind and recondition their thoughts—a very important component to stress relief. A certified instructor teaches clients the proper way to breathe, then guides them down the path to relaxation while listening to a soothing voice and soft background music in a relaxing and ambient environment. The sessions can be joined in person or on a live video feed. As previously mentioned, it is important to incorporate multiple tools for relief. Nutrition and exercise are not as effective alone, but together they bring more sustainable relief. Mix in daily meditation, yoga, grounding and adaptogenic herbs

(like cannabis) and nature walks to help handle life’s daily stressors with ease. The goal of NHCC is to empower people so they can obtain relief on their own, with confidence, and not be fully dependent on the center. Every person has the ability to achieve a level of inner peace and relaxation themselves. Society and expectations make it difficult for us and distract us from our true meaning and powers. Once we are happy within, and know our sense of purpose, nothing else matters—no opinions, no distractions, nothing that shakes our inner peace. We are able to understand, release and let go without reacting to situations that used to affect us with stress, anxiety, frustration, anger or any other undesired emotion. NHCC is focused on showing everyone these tools and abilities so they can achieve relief at the office and away. Starting in 2021, NHCC will start hosting cannabis retreats in various locations around the country and world. At these retreats, one will learn how to relax the mind through yoga and meditation; properly and safely use cannabis; have all-inclusive access to cannabis and a variety of products; go on nature hikes/walks; consume delicious plant-based meals; and relax. These retreats are all about relaxation, so there will be no need for a “vacation from the vacation”. The first retreat is in March 2021 and has limited spacing. Intestinal Gas and How to Alleviate It

S

by Sheila Shea

ome gas is a normal part of intestinal health and functioning. Excessive and painful gas is not. The intestines register pain from gas before pain from inflammation, adhesion and ulceration. Our body alerts us: “Pay attention to gas pain, understand the cause, then alleviate it properly. In a traditional colonic, a person rests on their back. However, since most clients now have excessive gas, all clients begin on their left side or Left Sims position, which helps the gas to come out more easily. The bowels are stretched and weakened by continuous gas bloating. The colon muscles do not have the energy to move and release the gas, nor the ability to eliminate stool.

The Metabolically Deficient Abdomen The metabolically deficient abdomen is the fermenting abdomen, percolating tons of microbial growth. Gas is a byproduct of this fermentation. According to Elaine Gottschall, MS in Breaking the Vicious Cycle, excessive gas is caused by a microbial overgrowth. Bacteria and fungi migrate from the large to the small intestines to 20

feed mainly on complex sugars or complex carbohydrates that the person is not breaking down with normal human digestion. The microbes feed on the complex sugars. This kind of digestion is called fermentation digestion. The fermentation byproducts are gases, acids and other metabolites that are toxic to the system. Through appropriate healing of the gut wall, one can return to human or enzymatic digestion. Causes of gas include: consumption of processed foods, added sugars and seed oils; carbohydrate indigestion and/or inability to break down complex sugars; enzyme insufficiencies in digestive processes including liver, gall bladder, pancreas, stomach and small intestines; overeating, food addiction and eating disorder; eating all day long, late night eating, overeating, overlapping meals, five or six feedings daily; overabundance of pathogenic bacteria, virus and fungi; imbalanced microbiome; accumulation of waste in the system, slow transit, constipation; insufficient exercise, therefore lack of tone in the abdominal muscles; inability to develop coping mechanisms for stress; and various pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics and steroids.

Reducing Gas and Removing Cause The diets for reducing the gas and restoring a normal balance of intestinal flora are free of processed foods, added sugars, seed oils and complex sugars. Low carbohydrate/high fat (LCHF) diets are helpful for reducing gas. Main LCHF diets are lower in carbohydrates and higher in fat and protein. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS), ketogenic, paleolithic and carnivore protocols are low in carbohydrate and higher in protein and fat. Whatever diet the person follows, the mantra is to reduce sugars of any kind. One male in his 40s had such severe gas, it made his life miserable at work and destroyed his social life. This situation had been going on for 13 years when he sought help from a colon hydrotherapist and chose to follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) to reduce his gas and heal his gut. It took him about 10 months to see progress. From the beginning, he had good signs he was getting better. It takes time to heal, to change the patterns, to create the right microbial balance in the gut. The quality to cultivate is patience. There are several lifestyle factors that can help to get gas under control. These include: using herbs, digestive enzymes and/ or charcoal; practicing breathing exercises; meditation; fasting and time restricted eating; colon hydrotherapy, enemas, hot and/ or detox baths; detox protocols for intestines, liver, kidney and parasite; abdominal massage; exercise to stimulate peristalsis and circulation in the intestinal tract; eating real foods; and developing coping skills for stress. Sheila Shea, MA is director of Intestinal Health Institute with the goal of healing the gastrointestinal system and hence healing the body. Shea is a 43-year veteran colon hydrotherapist with specialties in Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS), metabolic syndrome and detoxification programs. She offers consultations in person and online. Herbs for Intestinal Health

erusing Earl Mindell’s Herb Bible revealed some culinary tips on plants which aid the digestive system. Give them a try in salads, juiced or as a tea.

Anise: A tea brewed from the crushed seeds can relieve digestive disorders and cramps. Basil: An effective remedy for a variety of digestive disorders, including stomach cramps, vomiting and constipation. Caraway: Soothing for gas and other stomach disorders. Toss a few seeds in a soup or stew. Cardamom: A standard ingredient of curry, it stimulates the production of gastric juices, improves metabolism and even helps relieve gas. Celery: Has a calming effect on the digestive system, relieving gas and indigestion. Try a pint juiced. Dill: Best known as a digestive aid and remedy for a sour, gassy stomach. Fennel: Similar in taste to anise, and used to relieve gas. Sold fresh in most supermarkets, it can be juiced or chopped into salads. Garlic: A powerful digestive aid and gas reliever. It’s an antibiotic that works on pathogenic bacteria. Ginger: A time-proven remedy for upset stomach, indigestion and cramps. Olive oil: An excellent laxative, and stimulates the production of liver bile. Papaya: Breaks down and metabolizes protein and relieves indigestion. Parsley: A natural antispasmodic which helps to settle the stomach after a meal. It’s great juiced with carrot, or minced in salads. Peppermint: Lessens the amount of time food spends in the stomach by stimulating the gastric lining. It also releases the stomach muscles. Effective for stomach ache, nausea, vomiting and IBS. Turmeric: Stimulates the flow of bile from the liver, which breaks down dietary fats. Used 3,000 years ago by Indian healers to treat obesity. In Asia, it was used to treat stomach disorders and liver-related ailment. Modern research shows that it protects against gallbladder disease. Thyme: Culpepper, one of our earliest herbalists, said, “When taken internally, thyme comforts the stomach much, and expels wind.”

Treating The Vagus Nerve by Jean Read

T

he vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve in the body, but also one of the longest and most important nerves within the body. This nerve has many functions and influences our behaviors, digestion, vocal pitch, swallowing, heart rate, breathing rate, detoxification of the liver and kidneys, gall bladder function, saliva and sweat production, sexual arousal and more. While 20 percent of the nerve’s function is to carry signals from the brain to the body, 80 percent of its function is to carry information from the body back to the brain. The major neurotransmitter utilized

by the vagus nerve is acetylcholine, which has a major anti-inflammatory effect in the body. Therefore, one of the most important functions of the vagus nerve is managing the inflammatory systems of the body. If the vagus nerve begins to malfunction, then inflammation in the body reaches higher than normal levels and can become chronic. Common conditions that correlate to long term, high inflammatory levels include Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, gallstones, Parkinson’s disease and more.

There are three main problems that can occur to cause vagus nerve dysfunction: dysfunctional signaling from brain to body; dysfunctional signaling from body to brain; and damage to the vagus nerve via physical, mental or emotional trauma or chronic state of stress. The following mechanisms can lead to a dysfunctional vagus nerve: dysfunctional breathing (not using diaphragmatic/abdominal breathing and dysfunctional airways), dysfunctional digestive sequence (causing diarrhea or constipation, SIBO, poor dietary choices, herbicides and pesticides on our foods, poor satiety reflex, poor microbiome, leaky gut) dysfunctional heart rate, poor liver function, poor sleep and circadian rhythm and lack of social interactions. For those who feel they might have a dysfunctional vagus nerve, there are several exercises that can be done to help improve vagal nerve tone. First, learn some deep, abdominal breathing techniques and do them often through the day or when stress levels are high. Start exposing the body to cold by ending showers with one minute of cold water; over time, extend to several minutes with good abdominal breathing. Chanting, humming, singing and gargling also activate the vagus nerve and often bring us into a state of calm (parasympathetic norm). Yoga, Pilates and meditation help teach us to focus and calm the mind and regulate our breathing. Laughter and fun social gatherings help improve our mood and heart rate variability and normalize our breathing patterns. Other treatments that may help include: getting a monthly massage or body work; receiving visceral manipulation to the vagus nerve itself and the innervating organs within the abdomen and chest; chiropractic care; and special electrical stimulation units. Jean Read is a physical therapist that has been trained in treatment of the vagus nerve using visceral manipulation and refined techniques. Connect at 956-566-5443. See ad, page 19.

Time to Clear the Air about Wearing Masks by Lance J. Morris

T

hroughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the issue of wearing masks has become the symbol for the line drawn in the sand between those who believe masks are essential and critical for protecting themselves and others, versus those who believe that masks are a farce, protecting no one—and are even harmful. This has also become the symbol between those who believe it is their civic, moral and ethical responsibility to wear masks and those who believe that wearing masks represents an affront to their fundamental freedom and autonomy. These are radically different view-

points. Is one right and the other wrong? Both camps seem convinced they are in the right. Opposing perspectives are adamantly proclaimed with supporting evidence. Let’s look at both sides of the story and try to offer a rational compromise. Part of the public’s confusion has been exacerbated by a lack of clear guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) relative to mask wearing. At the very beginning of the pandemic, their guidance was to wash hands and engage in social distancing only. In February, the CDC added wearing masks for symptomatic patients. It was not

until April that the CDC recommended masks for the general public. This change occurred due to the previously unrecognized reality of asymptomatic people being vectors for COVID-19 infection transmission. In July, 31 states mandated the wearing of masks in public venues where social distancing is not possible. To be clear, at no time has any physician or agency, medical or governmental, stated or even suggested that the addition of masks is some kind of panacea against COVID-19. What has been evident from the beginning is a dominant consensus among health professionals that the appropriate wearing of masks, combined with hand washing, wiping of surfaces and social distancing, decreases the probability of COVID-19 transmission and infection. Both camps site several cogent arguments both against and for mask-wearing. AGAINST: Viral particles pass through any masks, including N-95s, as readily as the air we breathe. This is a function of particle size. Masks are excellent for blocking bacteria, but not viruses. FOR: Although true, masks are effective in reducing the spray of viral containing droplets primarily from coughing, sneezing and any form of vocal exuberance. This does not eliminate, but reduces the “infectious dose” exposure. There is a direct correlation with the “viral load at diagnosis” as an “independent predictor of mortality”. Therefore, low initial exposure increases the probability of being asymptomatic or having only modest symptoms and increasing natural immunity. AGAINST: Masks may decrease available cellular oxygen, while increasing carbon dioxide. This may lead to a decrease in functional immunity, as well as creating other metabolic complications. FOR: This may be true, but much more with wet or contaminated masks, physical exertion or in hot climates like Arizona. In one local holistic office, when using a pulse oximeter to test oxygen levels of all patients wearing masks (including cardiac, asthma and COPD patients), all were found to have normal oxygen levels.

24

Tucson Edition

NaturalTucson.com

AGAINST: Masks may contribute to increased anxiety and stress, increase pulse rate and blood pressure, increase the risk of heart or respiratory disease and may actually increase exposure to infectious vectors that are trapped in the masks themselves. FOR: All of these points may or may not be true. There are many medical journal studies both advocating for and against wearing masks. Upon careful review of both sides, some authors are misrepresenting or taking liberties with this data and then passing on their personal bias to the public. Finding the truth is by no means a simple open and closed case. Keeping this all in mind, here are some mask recommendations. • Consider wearing a mask when social

Photo by Polina Tankilevitch from Pexels

*Although there is conflicting data about the influence of mask wearing and oxygen availability, the general consensus is that masks are safe for most people. Reasonable guidance suggests only to use new masks and if exercising (as per CDC and all other guidelines), do not wear a mask. If outside in extreme heat, do not wear a mask, but social distance. distancing is not a viable option. • In our own homes, we do not need to use masks with our immediate household members. If another relative or someone else visits and we cannot social distance, then a mask is appropriate. • Don’t wear a mask while driving in the car alone or with household members. • Don’t wear a mask in excessive heat or while doing vigorous exercise. Either use social distance or don’t do it. A public gym should accommodate social distancing, without requiring masks. • Those 5 years old and younger do not need to wear a mask. • Those who have a medical condition for which wearing masks is contraindicated (physical, emotional or mental) are not

required to wear one. Cite the Americans Disability Act, if anyone asks. That said, this last area is a bit tricky. When a business has a sign posted, “Masks Required For Entry”, we have a whole new can of worms. Overall, though, if someone won’t or can’t wear a mask in those locations, it’s probably better to turn around. Consider letting someone else do the shopping and/or order online. Please be prudent and consider all of the above information and guidance. Let’s all be safe and respectful of one another while we navigate this uncharted territory. yoga spotlight

NOW OPEN: Yoga Pod Tucson is for Every Body by Wendy Becker

A

t Yoga Pod Tucson, anyone new to yoga can find safety to explore their body in classes with structured intention. From the moment one walks into this five-star designed studio at St. Philip’s Plaza in Tucson, there is a symmetry that is as inviting as the consistency and flow-based predictability of the class schedule. Through the ups and downs of this past year, Yoga Pod Tucson has built a thriving community with loyal members, incredibly talented teachers and friendly front desk and childcare staff. To studio owner Lisa Cutts, the most important guided expedition to the inner reaches of one’s self is defined by “belonging”. It does not matter if we are not like the images of bodies viewed on popular teaching videos. Real bodies come in all shapes and sizes with ranges in strength and flexibility. At Yoga Pod Tucson, the average Jane or Joe will find an approachable method that will fit into anyone’s lifestyle. Formerly a software executive in private equity, Cutts traveled for her job and visited yoga studios all over the world. In fact, the Yoga Pod Tucson classrooms are named after her most favorite places: Bali and Santorini. While traveling has a luxurious appeal, being an executive has huge responsibility. To relieve stress and calm down, Cutts discovered yoga was a means 26

to rest her mind “while finding what feels good when working out physically.” Once grandchildren entered her life picture, she did not want to travel as much. On a fated visit with her sister in Boulder, Colorado, she was driving by a building when she declared to her sister, “Oh look, a yogurt place,” and asked her sister to check it out. However, Cutts was not wearing her glasses when she realized it was not a place to eat, but a place to retreat. For the remainder of her visit, she enjoyed returning to classes for solace in the quiet spaces of her practice. As the studio was part of a franchise, she was inspired. Cutts returned home to Tucson and whispered to her husband (also known as “Chief of Stuff and Things”), “Let’s build a yoga studio.” With that, Cutts cultivated her heartmind intention (called a sankulpa), listening to Yoga Nidra. Nightly, before bed, she set out to bring deeper meaning to her life and her community. It has now been twoand-a-half years since she decided to act upon her dream of using her worldly experiences as a template to create an architectural sanctuary. COVID delayed her efforts to keep her doors open three separate times after the grand opening at the beginning of this year. Challenging as it has been, she feels this has been a lesson in patience.

NaturalTucson.com

The signature of Yoga Pod Tucson is that every student is welcome to find a level of participation that fits their experience and comfort level. Cutts recommends that new students start with podBASICS that introduces postural themes broken down into parts for proper form. This class prepares students for podFLOW, which follows a specific sequence of yoga postures. Additionally, other classes are woven into the schedule for a balanced variety, like the still holds of yin yoga or the Ayurvedic podFLOW that changes with the seasons. Cutts is most excited about how her husband has been “feeling great” since starting yoga earlier this year. “He went from doing nothing to doing something every single day, even throughout the closure,” she enthuses. Clearly, the Chief of Stuff and Things has gained a whole lot more than a boutique, spacious reception, children’s play area, cool light color therapy classroom ambiance, tiled locker room, private water closets and glass doored shower stalls. The journey at Yoga Pod Tucson creates both a physically and energetically clean environment in which a consistent yoga discipline can develop. Like the power of playful dolphins in the clear blue waters of the sea, Yoga Pod Tucson is a perfect place to be in community. Yoga Pod Tucson is located at 4280 N Campbell, Suite 130. Connect at 520-261-0728 or YogaPod.com/tucson. Wendy Becker, BA, LMT, Dipl. LAc., CNRT-M enjoys writing about health and wellness related topics and is owner of Axis Vitality, PLLC (AxisVitality.com) in Tucson.

A well-organized practice will have a solid plan, good systems for managing records, and will be able to do successful case management. Communication. As in any relationship, we need a good open rapport with our care provider. We should be able to present concerns as a patient and feel heard. The doctor and team should be good at listening and processing our input, and together, adapt strategy where necessary.

Shockingly, many people select their providers based on their personality traits, rather than medical/dental abilities and proficiencies. There are some helpful tools that can aid in evaluating either an existing dental office or selecting a new one. Consider the following

Experience of the provider. The length of time the dentist has successfully been in practice and number of cases performed highly correlates to the successful outcome of the procedures performed. Having seen a lot of examples helps develop judgement as to how best to address any procedures/issues. Elahe Wissinger

Patient satisfaction. Satisfied patients will happily provide references. Keep in mind the person giving the referral. Ask someone who shares the same value system and is looking for the same things. It is important to have goals when making a selection and then evaluating if the office meets or exceeds those goals. Quality of work performed. Does the person making the referral have beautiful and reliable work done in their mouth? Has their provider discussed and implemented a life maintenance plan specifically designed for them? Cutting-edge technology. There is ongoing investment in the latest tools, methods and materials used. Holistic approach. A great dentist is a medical practitioner, able to look at one’s mouth and see their total health and diagnose issues of concern, ranging from possible oral

Teamwork. The dentist and the hygiene staff absolutely must be on the same page and level of training. The hygienist should be able to detect similar issues as those that may concern the dentist. Otherwise those issues can go unnoticed. Responsiveness. Can a patient obtain prompt assistance from the practice, whether it is a question about insurance or billings, or a medical/dental concern? Lastly, in these trying times of COVID-19, there are some additional considerations that one should look for in terms of protocols that high quality dental offices will have in place to keep everyone safe. Make sure the dental provider: uses proper personal protective equipment and does not use mercury removal masks in place of KN95 or N95 masks; follows OSHA requirements without shortcuts; uses air filters with UV sterilizers in each room/operatory; frequently uses medical hand sanitizers; has COVID guidelines that are printed, posted and followed by both patients and team members; and uses additional suctions in hygiene rooms while aerosol is created. Once we have selected the right dentist, we should make sure we understand treatment proposed and agree with treatment recommended. Ask questions. If we are not satisfied with the answers, then get a second or third opinion if needed. E Dental Solutions is located at 2504 E. River Rd., Tucson. STRESSORS? NO PROBLEM! by J. Garnet

P

eople get stressed. It is part of being human. Experiencing stress can be seen as far back as prehistoric times—maybe even the very beginning of human existence. Finding shelter, food and clothing are all basic needs. Imagine early mankind during a period when none of the necessities were readily available, and there was no aid to be found. Survival in general is stressful, and whether it was 5,000 years ago, hunting and gathering food, or in more modern times when a doctor gives a cancer diagnosis, stress has had the same effect on the human body throughout time, and if not handled properly, it can be life threatening. According to the American Institute of Stress, anxiety caused by stress affects the human body in many different ways. It can affect every major system in the body. Increased blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, 28

digestive tract problems, sleeping difficulties, irritability, headaches, the inability to concentrate and depression are just a few of the physiological responses brought on by stress. When someone experiences stress for long periods of time, risks for heart attacks, strokes, suicide and other major health issues are increased dramatically. Stress kills. It is a part of everyday life, and although stressors are different now than during other points throughout history, it is an enemy to the body. Sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, being the tenth person in the checkout line when the cashier calls for a price check, that interview, the first date, monetary problems, work insecurity—all common stressors in modern times. For the last nine months, stress levels have soared for even the most even-keeled person out there. Being told what can and cannot be

done, being distanced from friends and family, not knowing what to believe and basic fear of getting sick are all stressors that are affecting people worldwide. There are different levels of stress. Some people even thrive with low levels. There can be a fine line separating high level stressors and lower level ones. What might cause high levels of stress for one person may not necessarily affect another person in the same way. Perception is key in determining what stressors are going to do to the person. It can be as easy as distinguishing between whether a situation is challenging or threatening. No matter the level of stress, it still causes harm to the body. People realize that being stressed is unhealthy. Deep breathing, meditation, taking a walk or doing a cardio workout can all help, but how many people really do that? Some people who know all of the right things to do to fight stress still don’t do what needs to be done. Maybe it’s because they don’t live near a nice walking path, perhaps not knowing how to meditate, or busy schedules prevent someone from focusing and being in the moment and lowering stress levels. No matter the reasons for not practicing healthy ways to reduce stress, there are ways to do it without needing lots of time or effort, and they involve integrating plant medicine. Plant medicine has an expansive arsenal of natural wholesome remedies when it comes to treating the effects that stress causes on the body. Mother Nature is medicine and can heal problems of the body, mind and spirit, all of which are affected by stress. Stressors will continue to arise, and the body will continue to react no matter the cause or severity of the stressors. If time doesn’t allow for a long walk in the woods, a study conducted by the Department of Environmental Conservation has shown that just being in close proximity to a tree, or group of trees, for just 15 minutes

plant brief

Improve Exercise and Recovery with Avocados and Beets Tasty and loaded with vitamins and minerals, avocados are a “healthy fat” that can speed recovery after exercise, reports a new Brazilian study. Researchers gave 12 women either 600 milliliters (mL) of avocado pulp or a placebo in capsules. After waiting an hour, the women ran on a treadmill for half an hour, then recovered for an hour. Metabolic tests of heart rate, heart rate variability and skin conductance indicated those taking the avocado pulp recovered faster than those given a placebo. In another new study, 12 Spanish men were able to do more back squats in weightlift training an hour after drinking 12 mL of beet root juice compared with a placebo, suggesting the nitrate-rich drink improves muscular endurance. matheaufrade/Unsplash.com

can lessen most of the negative side effects of being under stress. In fact, the study also shows that just being outside in nature can lower stress levels. Sitting outside for a few minutes with a spot of tea can do wonders. Herbal teas have been consumed for millennia because of the soothing effects they have on the human body. Any type of mint, chamomile, lavender and citrus teas can help fight the anxiousness caused by stress. Whether it’s the process of preparing a blend of specialty tea, smelling the aromatic steam coming from the cup or the natural ingredients that make it up, tea can calm the mind and the body. Drinking a cup of tea increases serotonin levels in the body, which brings on a calmness without the drowsiness. A cup of tea can ease muscle aches and tension headaches. Simply replacing an everyday beverage with a serving of tea can greatly improve the body’s reaction to stress. Another gift from Mother Nature is the essence of flowers and herbs. Aromatherapy and essential oils are used to combat stress. The essence of a flower, or herb, is made up of the chemicals that produce the scent of the plant. When extracted and produced correctly, the essence is made into an essential oil. According to WebMD, when breathing in the essence of lavender, lemon, mint, cedarwood and bergamot, smell receptors in the nasal cavity are activated and can cause changes in the brain— particularly to the limbic system, which regulates emotion. Rubbing essential oils on the skin can have the same effect on the body. Oil diffusers emit the aroma throughout an area, and having actual flowers in close proximity can work as well. Breathing in the essence of a flower, whether it’s in an oil or the flower itself, can help the body calm down when it’s roused by stress. Nature provides what’s needed to combat numerous ailments, diseases and conditions. Stress is just one of them. Sit quietly under or next to a tree, take a deep breath of nature’s many scents and aromas, sip a cup of tea and just be. Let Mother Nature kiss the wounds and make them all better.
