Write to Heal with Kim Green

A

s an award-winning author and writing coach, Kim Green and her business Blank Page Consulting have always emphasized the power of self-expression as the central theme of her work with writing and life coaching clients. Green’s complete commitment to this work manifested when she completed her first novel, hallucination, during a traumatic period in her own life. Personalized Write-to-Heal sessions are a totally confidential, independent experience that allows participants to excavate their past in order to move past it. The writing portion of the experience is completely confidential, will not be critiqued or edited and is only useful for bringing clients to a place where they can better Kim Green articulate (often for the first time) their raw emotions. Coaching is a discipline that goes one step further than listening and empathizing; it encourages the client to look more deeply into the ways that trauma has attached itself to their identity and offers suggestions on reframing. With powerful questioning, the client realizes that writing gives clients permission to release the past so they can claim their peace. “There is only one place where recycling is not good for you and that is re-cycling the past pain of trauma. Trauma is a tricky animal that can attach itself to our identity and create ongoing wounds that continue to regenerate,” says Green. “Those wounds can be dissipated.” For a free consultation to determine if Write to Heal work is right for you, call 678-938-2777 or visit BlankPageConsult.com.

Discover the Power of Transformation with Every Breath

J

onathan Schecter, of Blue Magic Alchemy, is currently accepting new clients for breathwork journeys, as well as coaching nervous system regulation and breathing. Breathwork journeys became a catalyst for profound transformation for Schecter and for countless individuals he has had the privilege to guide on their own journeys of self-discovery and healing. Today, he shares this transformative practice with you, both in person and online, to help you embark on your unique path toward personal growth and empowerment. “About five years ago, my life was at a standstill. Fresh out of a challenging divorce and stuck in a career that left me feeling unfulfilled, I knew that I had to take control of my circumstances if I wanted Jonathan Schecter genuine change,” explains Schecter. “I craved a way to unearth the underlying causes of my life’s challenges, to understand them at their core and prevent them from recurring.” Mindfulness had been a part of Schecter’s daily routine for some time, but he sensed the need to dig deeper. That’s when he stumbled upon the incredible power of breathwork journeys. “Through the simple act of altering my breath, combined with specially curated, emotionally resonant music, I found a path to dive deep into my emotions and unravel the false narratives I had been weaving for myself by connecting to my own inner guiding intelligence. It was a revelation,” he says. In addition to Neurodynamic Breathwork, some other invaluable modalities that have shaped his journey are functional breathing through Oxygen Advantage and Somatic Experiencing for expanding the nervous system and mindfulness meditation for finding clarity in thoughts. Schecter’s work is an invitation to embark on a transformative journey, one breath at a time, and a reminder that the potential for positive change is always within reach. health brief

Nutrition for Balancing Women’s Hormones Nutrition plays a pivotal role in supporting women’s hormones. A woman’s hormonal balance is delicate and can be influenced by various factors, with diet being a significant one. Adequate nutrition ensures that women’s bodies have the essential nutrients needed for hormone production, regulation and overall health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins provides crucial vitamins and minerals. Vitamins like B6, B12 and folate are essential for neurotransmitter production and mood regulation, which can help mitigate hormonal fluctuations that contribute to mood swings and irritability. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseeds can reduce inflammation and support the production of sex hormones like estrogen and proges-

terone. These fats also play a role in maintaining healthy menstrual cycles. Adequate protein intake ensures that the body has the amino acids necessary for hormone synthesis and repair of hormone-related tissues, such as the uterine lining. And supports the critical maintenance of muscle mass after menopause. In conclusion, a well-rounded diet provides women with the nutrients their bodies need to maintain hormonal equilibrium, regulate menstrual cycles and support overall health. Proper nutrition empowers women to navigate the ups and downs of hormonal changes with resilience and vitality. New Statewide Solar Policy Could Reshape Arizona’s Energy Future

I

Photo by Kindel Media on Pexels.com

n October, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) held a meeting to discuss the value of solar. The agenda included a vote on reopening the Value of Solar proceeding, whether to change the 10-year buyback rate lock-in period for solar customers and the rule limiting the reduction in buyback rates to no more than 10 percent per year and reversing course on the grandfathering of legacy net metering customers. Oral testimony at the meeting was overwhelmingly opposed to the ACC reopening the value of solar proceeding or increasing the step-down rate. Those in opposition included solar homeowners, solar workers, clean energy advocates, ratepayer advocates and every regulated utility in the state. The ACC decided not to re-open the Value of Solar case, which dictates how solar owners who installed in 2017 or later are credited for the surplus energy they contribute to the grid. However, the Commission did vote to open a new docket to re-evaluate the 10 percent step-down limitation and lock-in period for future solar customers. The original 2017 Value of Solar decision, reached after a lengthy evidentiary hearing and extensive deliberation and compromise, was designed to ensure predictable compensation for solar owners while providing stability to Arizona’s rooftop solar market. Current solar customers will maintain their rates. While the ACC did not re-open the export rate proceeding, the potential changes could still substantially reduce compensation for solar energy and erode critical protections for homeowners investing in solar power. The step-down limit and lock-in period give homeowners predictability about the compensation they will receive for energy exported to the grid, which is critical when deciding to invest in solar. Changing these rules would directly impact the Arizona solar industry during a period of heavy federal investment in clean energy. There are already over 200,000 solar users and over 8,000 solar jobs in Arizona; in fact, Arizona’s solar sector pumped $1.5 billion into our economy last year. However, this bizarre and sudden policy change could undermine that.

he other day I saw somebody’s Facebook post about swimming with humpback whales “every day this week,” and after I got past my initial envy pang—oh man, am I ever gonna get to swim with a humpback whale?—I started thinking about why having a moment with a massive representative of another species is such a big deal anyway. I’m not a great swimmer, but several years ago I was in Tulum with a boyfriend and tried snorkeling on a whim. I was not prepared for the rush I felt when I dipped my face in the water and realized I’d already been hanging out with an iridescent school of fish all dressed up and sparkling in reflected sunlight. Some of us looked each other in the eye, said a wordless “hey”. We were groovin’, all moving in our own ways on the same dancefloor, having a floaty sea-rave. It was one of those peak moments. Anyway, I waded into the ocean that day relating to it—and everything in it— as most definitely separate from me. And by the time I was back on shore, I’d gotten the memo on a deep level that I, myself, am an animal in the natural world. The Big Aha of that trip: It was time to honor my wildness. Things get really messed up when we forget—or deny—our wildness. We are conditioned to think of our species as unique and somehow separate, which has us collectively being those obnoxious guests at the luxe hotel who trash the place and then get all indignant and rude when we’re called on it. When we really allow it to sink in that we are not only fellow occupants with other life forms on the planet but related, well, that’s a paradigm shift. We instinctively make choices and do things from a place of fondness for the eco-everything. As in, you’re family, let me do this nice thing for you. It’s what has people interrupt their busy lives to pull over and pick up the turtle in the middle of the highway: Hey little mama, lemme give you a hand. In those moments, we are at our best—our most authentic, real, natural best. Oh, but did I mention that honoring our wildness makes amazing things possible in our lives?

We are creatures who thrive when all four elements are present in our lives: the soaring and freedom of AIR; the depth and flow of WATER; the wisdom and groundedness of EARTH; the creativity and power of FIRE. It’s worth reflecting on which element your intuition wants you to seek out right now. When you acknowledge your primal nature, your inner eco-system thrives. A woman who owns and loves her innate wildness is comfortable in her own skin, joyfully takes up space, trusts her powerful inborn instincts and creates magical results with love, resolve and a sense of humor. She’s the mama bear, the hummingbird, the thunderstorm. She’s just WILD like that. Do you want to BE her? You ARE her. When you’re in touch with your glorious natural power, you stop wondering if you have or can trust your intuition and inner knowing. You allow your innate gifts to be a brilliant torch in your life, shining light on your path. If you’ve momentarily lost touch with your wildness, try saying these things to yourself out loud. Consider it a singing telegram from the depths of your soul. • I was born for this, and I am part of the natural, glorious order of things. • My beautiful intellect is just one of the ways I see, learn, create and am guided. I am connected to it All. • I am here to play my part in the Big Symphony of Life.

An Invitation for Your Wild Spirit Over the past year in particular, I’ve been leaning into my own wildness. I keep reminding myself to stop and be still, listen keenly and pick up even faint whiffs of possibility in the air. The result? The most bold and beautiful thing I’ve ever created: SoulFire. SoulFire is designed to ignite our power to create, and you can now register and claim your spot at the Tucson retreat. It is the result of six months of wooing my muse and a trust fall into the loving arms of my intuition, and it’s exactly what I want in my life right now: a joy-full soul fest, a chance to dance and rejoice in our voices and stoke the creative confidence and power that our lives and the world are calling for. Oh, and I have been craving in-person time with cool, interesting, up-for-life women. Come join me and create a reality that’s big and beautiful enough to feed an expansive, gorgeous spirit like yours, you wild thing. uring the holidays, it is easy to get swept up in all the festive cheer and forget fitness goals. The cold weather and tempting holiday treats make it tough to stay motivated to exercise. But with a few simple strategies, those fitness goals can be kept alive throughout the season.

Make a Plan and Stick to It “One of the most powerful ways to keep yourself on top of your game during the winter and holiday season is to create a simple and effective workout routine,” asserts Anthony Roumell, a certified personal trainer in San Diego. A study published in Research in Sports Medicine confirms that patients that set intentions and action plans are more likely to adhere to the recommended level of exercise. 16

“The key is the discipline to create a healthy lifestyle all year round,” advises Josh York, founder of GYMGUYZ, a mobile fitness franchise in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. “A good exercise routine should be part of your regular active routine, just like brushing your teeth. Planning ahead, setting achievable goals and tracking progress will help you stay on track and keep motivated. Whether it’s working out in the morning before work or hitting the gym at lunchtime, be sure to track progress to stay motivated,” he recommends.

Mix It Up To keep things interesting, mix up workout routines. For example, swap the cardio session for a strength training workout, or try a new class like Pilates, yoga or dance. A varied routine challenges the body in new ways and keeps the mind engaged while working out. Roumell likes to use different strategies to jumpstart his fitness. “Sometimes it looks like meditation, reading a few pages of a book, watching a funny comedy skit or stretching in my sauna to get the blood flowing. On days I am particularly tired, sore or resistant to my routine, I take things into a bit more of a shock-and-awe context by doing a cold plunge for five minutes, followed by a review of my fitness goals,” says Roumell.

Find a Workout Buddy Exercising with a friend or family member is a great way to stay motivated and

accountable during the winter holidays. Find someone that has similar fitness goals and schedule workout dates together.

Choose Healthy Holiday Treats It’s easy to indulge in sugary treats and heavy meals when everyone is celebrating, but indulging too much can cause weight gain and derail fitness goals. To stay on track, choose healthier holiday snacks like fruit salad, vegetable trays, nuts and lean proteins. When indulging, avoid overeating and practice moderation.

Stay Mindful Winter months can bring about seasonal affective disorders that can make people feel down and lethargic. Small tasks such as lighting candles, meditation or even a short walk can be uplifting. According to a study published in the Primary Care Companion to The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, exercise can help to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Find Joy In the season of joy, find an enjoyable workout routine. “Forcing yourself to do exercises that you hate will only make it more difficult to stick to your fitness routine,” says York.

Add Purpose

“Clearly identifying the benefits you want to gain from fitness, such as improved health, energy and self-esteem, is crucial in helping you stick to your fitness goals,” York explains. When the holidays do disrupt the fitness plan, do not abandon the goal; treat it as a rest day instead. “I use the 80/20 rule when it comes to planning exercise and time off to provide flexibility during the holidays,” he adds.

Reward Progress

Set a workout milestone and receive a reward when it is met. For example, booking a spa day or purchasing a new yoga mat may be the reward for exercising 20 days in a row or nailing a tough pose. Knowing that something special is on the other side of the workout can be a great motivator. Winter holidays can be a challenging time for maintaining a fitness routine and meeting personal goals, but with a little bit of planning, determination and the right mindset, holiday cheer will not derail the achievement of fitness goals. spaces that promote health and comfort, attention is given to various aspects. Indoor Climate Control: Regulation of indoor air humidity, sound and ion balance is achieved through the use of appropriate materials and finishes. Achieving a balance between thermal insulation and storage capacity, coupled with climatically appropriate temperatures, results in comfort and efficiency.

Green Sustainable Building Practices Creating Healthy, Eco-Friendly Spaces by Brian Johnson In the world of construction, a new paradigm is emerging—one that goes beyond the commonly understood “green” building practices. It’s about embracing eco-friendly, non-toxic and environmentally safe building methods and principles. The goal? To plan, construct and renovate homes and communities that not only enhance the lives of the occupants but also minimize harm to builders and reduce environmental impact. These principles can be categorized into five key areas.

Long-Term Planning: Site & Community Design The foundation of sustainable building begins with meticulous long-term planning. In this phase, several crucial factors come into play. Health Hazard Elimination: Ensuring that the chosen site is free from both natural and human-made health hazards is paramount. This step sets the stage for a safe living environment. Occupant Protection: Dwellings are strategically placed to shield occupants from sources of air, soil, water, noise and electromagnetic pollution. This consideration extends to well-planned communities, which offer access to fresh air, sunshine and nature. A focus on diverse age groups within the community ensures inclusivity and accessibility.

Energy Strategies: Implementing thermal radiation strategies, including passive solar, where feasible, reduces energy consumption. Acoustic protection from noise and vibration adds to the overall quality of living spaces, while ergonomic design principles ensure that homes are both functional and comfortable.

Environmental Protection, Social Responsibility and Energy Efficiency In a world increasingly aware of environmental concerns, adopting socially responsible and energy-efficient practices is imperative. Sustainable Materials: Choosing materials and methods that promote human health from the extraction phase to disposal is crucial. Avoiding materials that deplete irreplaceable natural resources or are harvested unsustainably is a responsible choice. Energy Consciousness: Minimizing energy consumption throughout a building’s life cycle is possible through energy-efficient design, the incorporation of energy and water-saving technologies and the utilization of renewable energy sources. It also involves considering embodied energy and environmental life cycle costs when selecting construction materials.

A critical but often overlooked aspect of sustainable building is the quality of indoor air and water. Moisture Control: Ensuring low moisture content during construction processes is vital to prevent issues related to mold and dampness. Ventilation: Providing ample ventilation is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Non-Toxic Materials: The use of non-toxic materials with pleasant natural scents contributes to the overall well-being of occupants. Water Quality: Ensuring high water quality through purification technologies further enhances the environmental friendliness of the building.

Electromagnetic Radiation Environmental Factors In the digital age, electromagnetic radiation is a critical consideration. Natural Light: Prioritizing natural light and using colors in harmony with nature not only promotes sustainability, but also creates aesthetically pleasing spaces. Radiation Minimization: Minimizing interference with cosmic and terrestrial radiation is essential for occupant well-being. Wireless Considerations: Adopting strategies to reduce exposure to harmful electromagnetic radiation from building electrification and wireless devices is a modern necessity. Avoiding materials with elevated radioactivity levels adds another layer of safety. In conclusion, these eco-friendly practices are fundamental to sustainable building. They focus on creating healthier, more efficient and environmentally responsible living spaces. Importantly, they can be made understandable to homeowners, general contractors and architects alike, paving the way for a more sustainable and harmonious future. Hold the Plastic, Please by Kevin Greene lastic has transformed our daily existence. But the volume of plastic, and its long lifespan, makes it one of the most vexing environmental challenges of our lifetime. We produce a staggering 300 million tons of plastic each year worldwide, 40 percent of which is used for disposable single-use items. That’s nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. We rarely think about where plastic comes from, but we should. Nearly every piece of plastic begins as a fossil fuel, and the process of making plastic is so energy-intensive that if the plastic industry were a country, it would be the world’s fifth largest greenhouse gas emitter. In the U.S., plastic is projected to outpace coal’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In addition to climate impacts, air pollution from the refining of fossil fuel feedstocks into the building blocks for making plastic contributes to health problems in neighboring communities,

P

including an increased risk of lung cancer, pulmonary disease and asthma. Plastic also pollutes through the release of chemical additives used in its manufacture, many of which are toxic. An emerging area of concern is the potential for toxic chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) to leach out of plastic containers into foods and beverages. We cannot recycle our way out of the plastic pollution problem. Only a small fraction of global plastic is effectively recycled, and many types are difficult to recycle due to composition and contamination. It is estimated that only about 9 percent of plastic waste generated in the U.S. is recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators or leaked into the environment. The bad news is that the oil, gas and petrochemical industries are working to increase plastic production. With the world turning to renewable energy and electric vehicles, these industries see plastic as their new lifeline. They are poised to almost triple global plastics use by 2060. We need action to turn off the plastic tap. The time is now to explore and embrace alternatives to plastic packaging. Thin plastic carry-home bags and single-use bottles, cups and takeout containers are all items that can easily be replaced by durable, reusable items. We can bring our own bags to the store. We can refuse overpackaged items. We can support businesses that provide refillable alternatives. We can urge local officials to develop programs that reduce the inflow of plastics into our communities. Reducing the use of plastic may seem daunting, and you may be tempted to give up. Just do the best you can. Small actions can make a big difference. Making just one simple swap, like purchasing a reusable water bottle, can spare the environment hundreds of plastic bottles each year. Lung Maintenance 101 NATURAL STRATEGIES TO BREATHE EASIER by Sheila Julson

tionary bike or flat land, as well as light exercises with bands or small weights. Breathing exercises that focus on the diaphragm and expel stale air also support lung efficiency. Saeed suggests that stretching can improve range of motion, boost circulation and keep muscles flexible. Some people tend to hold their breath while stretching, so it is helpful to become more conscious about our breathing during these movements. Saeed cautions, “Don’t overdo it. Exercise as long as you feel good and energized afterward. If you feel exhausted or worse after exercise, or if your symptoms worsen, you’re doing too much.” Both Encian and Saeed note that people with respiratory conditions or chronic illness should consult a physician before starting any exercise program.

Fresh Air: Many home items, from furniture to rugs and bed-

ost people inhale about 22,000 times per day without realizing it, but for the more than 34 million Americans living with lung diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, taking a breath is often difficult. The American Lung Association reports that one in three Americans live in places with unhealthy levels of air pollution. Everyone needs fresh, life-sustaining oxygen, and natural therapies are available to help us breathe a little easier. According to Madiha Saeed, a holistic, functional and integrative doctor in Naperville, Illinois, controlling chronic inflammation is an important strategy in pulmonary rehabilitation. “A healthy inflammation response, or acute inflammation, means the body’s defenses are working properly. But if the switch to our immune system stays in the ‘on’ position, it can be too much of a good thing,” explains the founder of HolisticMom, MD. Daily exposure to inflammatory triggers, such as chronic stress, allergens, synthetic food additives and low-grade infection, can drive disease. Saeed notes that exercise helps combat inflammation by relieving stress, regulating digestion, improving insulin sensitivity, detoxifying the body and increasing the feelgood hormone serotonin.

Exercise: Dawn Encian is a Virginia-based functional nutritionist and organizer of the Breathe Easy, Breathe Well summit, which focuses on non-pharmaceutical ways to manage respiratory conditions. She asserts that exercise makes the heart and lungs work harder, thereby supplying more oxygen to muscles. “Regular exercise also increases blood volume, resulting in the body being able to extract oxygen more efficiently,” she advises. For those with healthy lungs, Encian recommends high-intensity interval training, brisk walking, jogging, running or jumping rope, as well as strength-enhancing modalities like weightlifting, Pilates or yoga. For people with respiratory issues, she suggests lower-intensity exercise like walking, tai chi and cycling on a sta-

ding, contain chemicals that off-gas volatile organic compounds. Saeed cautions that inhaling these chemicals can be as dangerous as consuming them. Indoor air purifiers, which range in size and cost, can help filter toxins and optimize detoxification. Swapping out chemically laden household cleaners can also effectively improve indoor air quality. Encian makes her own cleaners with essential oils, dried lemon and orange rinds, rubbing alcohol, witch hazel and water. Houseplants offer an affordable way to improve indoor air quality. Encian recommends aloe, snake plants, peace lilies, ferns, rubber plants, chrysanthemums, spider plants, areca palm and dracaena. Saeed also likes weeping fig, Chinese evergreen, bamboo, Gerbera daisies and English ivy. Getting outdoors is often recommended to maintain overall health and well-being, but Saeed recommends checking the local air quality index before heading out. Many apps show air quality, and some state how long it is safe to be outside if someone has a respiratory condition. If going outside on a poor air quality day cannot be avoided, masks may be helpful in reducing exposure to pollutants. Encian also recommends personal air purifiers worn around the neck.

Nutrition: Proper diet and nutrition can help strengthen the

lungs. Saeed and Encian believe that dairy may lead to the production of excess mucus. Foods with carotenoids and vitamin A, like sweet potatoes, carrots, berries and leafy greens, promote mucus-membrane health. Magnesium, garlic, mustard seeds, onions, lentils, omega-3s found in cold-water fish, nuts, flaxseeds and foods high in vitamins B5 and B6 are beneficial for lungs and overall immune health, as are vitamins C and D. Staying properly hydrated will also help airways function appropriately.

Rest and Relaxation: Optimizing sleep can help support the immune system. Encian also recommends steam baths or showers with essential oils, such as eucalyptus, peppermint, frankincense and rosemary, to open the airways and expel mucus. Chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure and energy work can also facilitate lung health and overall wellness. Sheila Julson is a freelance writer and regular contributor to Natural Awakenings. According to The Wall Street Journal, Americans spend $1.2 trillion annually on things they don’t essentially need. Becker says that focusing on minimalism allows us to invest our money where it truly matters. “Choosing to accumulate only the essentials can lead the way to financial freedom. Spending less on things you don’t really need will cut your financial expenses and provide an opportunity to not just save money for the sake of keeping it for yourself, but to use it to further causes that you believe in. It also allows you to seek out jobs that are not necessarily tied to income,” he says.

The Joys of Minimalism A RICH LIFE WITH LESS STUFF

Declutter Strategies

A

fter a pandemic largely spent at home, many Americans are holding up a mirror to their lives and examining what really matters. Finding that material possessions weigh them down, people are turning to minimalism to simplify their physical, mental and emotional space. According to a study in ScienceDirect, a decluttered lifestyle improves sustainability and boosts emotional well-being. By paring down our possessions, we can become more authentic, simplify our finances and pave an easier pathway for the next generation. According to Joshua Becker, author of four books on the subject, including The More of Less and Things That Matter, “Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value by removing everything that distracts us from them. This provides a refreshing sense of freedom with a new level of independence that comes from no longer being tied to material possessions. Modern culture has bought into the lie that more is better and happiness can be purchased at a department store, but embracing minimalism brings freedom from the all-consuming passion to possess and dares to seek happiness elsewhere. It values relationships, experiences and soul-care, and lets us see all that we already have and reminds us to be grateful.”

Choosing the Essentials Monica Friel is the founder and chief executive organizer of Chicago-based Chaos to Order, which works with clients to improve organization in their lives. She advises that our homes have essentially become storage units filled with unused items. With the average American house more than double the size it was in 1950, according to National Public Radio, we have more space than ever to store what we don’t necessarily need. “For most people, our home is the biggest purchase we make, yet it’s so full of stuff it has actually become a burden. We’re embarrassed to have people over because of the clutter. I encourage clients to examine what’s weighing them down and start removing excess items that are adding to physical and emotional space. Think about if you were moving in three months, what would you want to take with you,” she says. 22

Tucson Edition

NaturalTucson.com

When starting to declutter, Becker recommends parting with the easiest stuff first. “Start by eliminating everyday things around the house you no longer need, such as duplicate items. For example, your family needs towels, so you will never remove them completely, but you could simplify your life by reducing the number of towels you own. You will enjoy the refreshing feeling of a less-cluttered linen closet or bathroom drawer. As you experience the benefits in your life, you’ll become better at finding solutions for the more difficult items,” he explains. Friel says that it is often not the actual physical object people are attached to, but the memories associated with it. She points out that with younger generations increasingly accessing digital and online information, they don’t necessarily have the same ties to objects as their parents do. “That rocking chair in the corner of the basement may have been important to Grandma, but now it’s just taking up space. It’s the story behind the chair, not the actual piece of furniture itself, that matters. People can take a photo of the object and share its history with digital storage, and the memory will last forever,” she says. Family heirlooms can become even more complicated for the sandwich generation—those taking care of both aging parents and their own children. Friel says that the best thing parents can do is to start downsizing early. For adult children sorting their parents’ stuff, it is often best

to ask for help. “Life transitions, such as a death in the family or moving elderly parents into a retirement community, can be difficult and draining endeavors. Find someone to help who is not emotionally attached, such as a professional organizer. They can provide unbiased guidance and help defuse any conflicts that may arise. This can even be done remotely now with families online via Zoom. So much of downsizing is about control. But making responsible choices with how to allocate your belongings actually helps put you in control of your legacy and makes it easier for your kids and other family members,” she explains.

without having to buy new and produce more waste. Finally, if an item is truly broken and unusable, there are ways to repurpose it. Even if you’re not a DIY person yourself, there are many who would be happy to take your broken, threelegged chair and turn it into a beautiful and unique piece of furniture.” McElwain notes that minimalism encourages us to become conscious consumers. “A minimalist lifestyle prompts us to ask ourselves if we really need or love an item, and if we have a place for it in our lives. As we become more intentional with

our choices, we also start to look into the origins of the things we buy. We try harder to support businesses that align with our values, such as those that prioritize fair trade, ethical manufacturing practices or eco-friendly operations,” she explains. “By adopting minimalism, we don’t just declutter our spaces, we also contribute to social and environmental causes that shape a sustainable future.” Carrie Jackson is a Chicago-based freelance writer. Connect at CarrieJacksonWrites.com.

Benefits for the Planet Adopting a minimalist approach is also better for the planet. Vourneen McElwain, the creator of The Plain Simple Life, says that embracing minimalism and sustainability has a positive impact on the world around us. “At its core, minimalism is all about living with less. So, when we choose this lifestyle, we reduce the demand for the excessive production of goods. Minimalism also encourages us to be more mindful about our consumption, so we tend to invest in higher-quality items that last longer, instead of falling into the fastfashion or disposable-products trap. Plus, when we own fewer items, we can choose to live in a smaller and more energyefficient home,” she advises. Being mindful of how we downsize can help keep the environmental impact to a minimum. McElwain points out, “We never want our unused items ending up polluting the environment in a landfill or in the sea. The most eco-friendly way to declutter is to donate things that are still in good condition or to give them away to family and friends. This way, we can give these items a brand-new life and help others without over-consuming new products. “You’d be surprised how something that may appear meaningless to some can hold great value for others. You can also sell unwanted items, which helps others get access to something they might need

An Associate Member of Women Artists of the West, Winslow’s work has been chosen for several posters and selected for a permanent collection on the walls of the Eller College of Business. She has also been featured in a number of art festivals and shows. The central thread of Winslow’s work is to express universal feelings of connection, joy and passion for the world around us in her work. She hopes her art strikes a chord with others. Winslow puts it best when she says, “I’ve had many people say that my work speaks to them, lifts them up, moves them, brings them joy. I hope that my work will be remembered for the light that lives in me that I wanted to share with others—a spark of my soul that spoke to theirs through my art.”

A Conversation with Artist Alexandria Winslow Where did you grow up? When did you move to Tucson?

ALEXANDRIA WINSLOW:

The Art of Connection

I grew up in New Jersey. I lived in several other states before settling in Tucson in 1982.

rt is like music in that we all have to make our own tune. Alexandria Winslow is not a Tucson native, and yet when she moved here in 1982, it was clear to her the dramatic landscape and visual beauty of the desert hit all of the musical high notes she had been longing for as an artist. Winslow’s art is whimsical, joyful, imaginative and sometimes outside the box. For her, it is all about placement, contrast and composition. She has replaced her early use of earthy colors and become a colorist, using the vibrant color palette of the desert landscape in an original and creative way in her artwork. A nature lover, she hikes, camps and travels in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, where she is rewarded with an abundance of inspiration for her paintings. Using her trademark style, she paints the landscape and wildlife of the Sonoran Desert to prompt the viewer to think about the conservation of our desert ecosystem. 24

What is your background as an artist? Education/ self-taught? I am a combination of both. My grandmother was my first mentor, and I was also experimenting with art on my own. I won my first award at a show when I was 12 for an abstract oil. I also took a few fine art courses in high school and college as well as other workshops and courses over the years. I was so curious about trying many mediums initially.

Why did you choose acrylic painting as a medium for your art? I chose to work in acrylics about 20 years ago. I was unable to work with oils for health reasons. I love the ability to layer paint very quickly with water-based paint. My style of working lends itself to the quickly drying acrylic paints and vibrant colors it offers. Acrylics are also great for demonstrating, which I still do at Jane Hamilton Fine Art, monthly from October to March each year.

Where do you get your ideas? I have always looked to God’s creation. Wildlife and landscape are my preferred subjects, although I mostly paint American southwestern landscapes.

How does Arizona inspire you? Oh, my goodness! Arizona has spectacular scenery and light and just inspires me to paint this incredible landscape again and again. The mix of cultures and vivid colors that show up in purple mountains, glorious sunsets, stark rock and ever-changing skies bid me to paint them.

How do you utilize color in your art? I use color as therapy for myself. It is not something I was always conscious of but as I have reached my mid-60s, I have gained much insight into what and why I paint the way I do. I love beauty and color in all things. When I am at my easel painting, I go to my happy place as they say. So having said that, I resonate with color visually, emotionally and spiritually. I love the puzzle of figuring out what colors evoke the spirit of the place that I saw and visited.

Why do you think others are drawn to your paintings? I believe there is a universal appeal to our beautiful surroundings and the “wow” moments of nature and life that we all can relate to, so I paint them. I am joyful when I paint, and I think when people see my work it makes them happy, and they can relate to the scene I have created.

Which artists influenced your style of art? Initially I was very influenced during my youth by the pop and illustration artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s like Andy Warhol, Heinz Edelmann and Roy Lichtenstein. I was extremely interested in high-definition, illustration and graphic art. Interestingly, I still gravitate to artists today who often started out in illustration careers like Dennis Ziemienski and Billy Schenck. I also love the poster and album cover art of that time period as well, like Phoenix by Grand Funk. I look to the past for inspiration as well in the old masters such as Van Gogh, Paul Gaugin, Michaelangelo, Caravaggio and many more. Love the murals of Diego Rivera.

What is your artistic philosophy? Visual art is a dance of the mind, heart, soul and body. It is an experience and relationship that must be put to a concrete medium of expression. When I paint a landscape, I have already immersed myself in it, seen it, savored it, enjoyed it, smelled it, walked in it, slept in it and gazed upon it with wonder. Dia De Los Muertos - Family Time by Alexandria Winslow

How would you describe yourself in five words? Expressive, passionate, motivated, sensitive and curious

Where can people buy your art? I am represented by Jane Hamilton Fine Art in Tucson.

What music do you listen to while you are painting? I have an eclectic palate when it comes to music. I love jazz, Native flute, instrumental, Christian and gospel, classic rock and big band, to name a few. Lately I have been listening to blues, like Chris Smithers and Nickel Creek, who started out as bluegrass, but now call themselves “Progressive Acoustic”.

Where are you traveling to on your next trip? I recently was invited to make an art trip to Italy and will be displaying my new work at “From Italy with Love” on November 17, at Jane Hamilton Fine Art. Next up is Israel.

practiced method of application, you can dive right into your work.

What advice do you have for aspiring amateur artists? I think as a young woman I thought there would be a magical moment when my art would be recognized and afford me a good living. Now looking back with hindsight, I realized that just putting in the steady one foot in front of the other approach is more realistic. Never give up! Always create your work and always showcase it consistently. I worked in an amazing art cooperative for eight years, showed in art festivals for five years, joined online art sellers, submitted my work repeatedly to shows and competitions and slowly got acceptance and invitations to show my work. I submitted my work to the Jane Hamilton Fine Art gallery and was accepted in the summer of 2019. Connect with Alexandria Winslow at AlexandriaWinslowFineArt@gmail.com.
