Treat Yourself or Others to a House Cleaning with PurMaid

P

urMaid Tucson knows that for many Americans, there is simply not enough time to spare to keep up with cleaning the house after a long workweek—especially during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. PurMaid offers cleaning services from professionals, so we can use what little time we have to unwind and enjoy friends and family. New customers can call today and receive three labor hours of cleaning for just $65. Those who haven’t hired a professional maid service or had time to get everything done themselves often feel that the stress of the chores is looming overhead like a dark raincloud. Outsourcing some (or a lot) of the household responsibilities is a great idea to help lessen the load. Some reasons that hiring a house cleaning service is a great idea include: more time to spend doing something you enjoy, getting the entire house cleaned at once, getting the house cleaned on a reliable schedule, enjoying a healthy space and enjoying the detailoriented efficiency of trained professionals. Specially trained individuals from a maid service clean homes day in and day out. As we would expect an assembly line to gain intimate knowledge and skill in their process, so too do professional cleaning teams. On a weekly basis, a cleaning company like PurMaid Tucson is likely to clean literally hundreds of bathrooms and mop hundreds of thousands of square feet of tile floor. Because this is their paid profession, they are skilled at efficiency and detail which the normal resident most likely lacks. For more information and easy, free estimates, call 520-331-2629, email PurMaidTucson@ gmail.com or visit PurMaidTucson.com. See ad, page 22.

T

he public can check many health aspects at home in an easy and highly convenient way without going to a doctor’s office. LetsGetChecked, based in Dublin, Ireland, and New York City, provides comprehensive, at-home health testing along with complementary clinical services and connections with a global network of regulated laboratories, enabling users to take more active roles in their health and decision making. After obtaining a testing kit online or from a selected pharmacy, customers self-collect a blood, saliva or urine sample with a kit-provided lancet and send it to an affiliated lab—all Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-approved and College of American Pathologists-accredited—using a pre-paid label. Most will receive a call from the company’s nursing team with results a few days later, which are also posted in their LetsGetChecked account. Thirty separate kits—grouped in men’s, women’s and sexual health plus wellness—can check for sexually transmitted diseases; some cancers; thyroid function; vitamin, cholesterol and hormonal levels; and more. Since its founding in 2014, the company has performed more than 250,000 tests. ima County Community College District recently moved Yoga Teacher Training to Northwest Campus, where it joins Massage Therapy as the second wellness career program with a therapeutic approach. Get Your Home Clean for the Holidays

P

ima Cleanpro is offering a December discount for those wanting to get their house ready for holiday guests. Mention Natural Awakenings to receive 15 percent off any cleaning now through December 15. Pima CleanSteve Nelson pro uses an eco-friendly citrus-based cleaning product that is safe for the environment, kids and pets. When it comes to carpet cleaning, most people think of steam cleaning, which involves pumping a lot of soap and water into carpets, then attempting to extract them back out. Steam cleaning leaves gallons of soap and water in carpets that takes days to dry and leaves residue in the carpets, causing them to recoil very quickly after they are cleaned, while adding a host for mold and mildew to set in. The Cleanpro system uses a unique ion exchange technology. The dirt goes from the carpet up into Pima Cleanpro’s cleaning pads, leaving carpets damp—not wet—and only taking about one or two hours to dry. Pima Cleanpro also offers an important tip for spills—especially those that may occur while hosting family and friends for holiday gatherings. Do not use any products to clean the mess, as some cleaning products have a pH level that is not neutral and can actually set the stain in. Instead, immediately or as soon as possible, use a warm washcloth and blot the stain out, without scrubbing. For more information, call 520-262-5411 or visit PimaCleanpro.com.

Get Ready for 2020 with a Tarot Reading

S

hivani Baker is a professional astrologer and tarot reader and teacher for over 30 years, currently working at Canyon Ranch Spa as an astrologer. Her approach to readings is both practical and spiritual. Baker is offering a holiday special for December 2019 and January 2020: buy one reading, get one free. This would make a great holiday gift for family or friends. The tarot cards are another excellent tool which work with archetypes, helping us understand what is happening on an unconscious level. She also offers Astrocartograghy, a chart which will show the place locations to settle in the world. This helps Shivani Baker when one is considering a move or a trip. Our natal chart is uniquely our own blueprint of our strengths and challenges. Getting a reading will help us with timing of events so that we can feel more empowered with this knowledge. She often sees couples to examine both of their charts together, which is called synestry. “We put one chart in the center and the partner’s chart around that and look at the aspects between the two. I look at many things to see if there’s going to be harmony and longevity,” explains Baker. For more information, call 413-313-5677 or email ShivaB01073@gmail.com.

Photon Genius Super Sauna Light Therapy

T

he Photon Genius is a revolutionary machine that provides an abundance of healing photons through both its infrared light emitters and its ionized noble gas harmonic frequency dischargers. With over 150 feet of light tubes, no other instrument in the world can provide the level of photon light nourishment as the Photon Genius. It provides the widest range of harmonic frequencies from zero to 2 MHz, which serves to balance all the cells in our body. The Photon Genius Super Sauna provides a full spectrum range of near, medium and far infrared transmissions. Infrared has the ability to penetrate through the skin to the subcutaneous tissues, transforming light energy to heat energy. The thermal effect within the deep layers of the tissues causes blood vessels and capillaries to dilate, promoting better blood circulation and the release of years of toxins and metabolic waste through sweating. The internal heat generated helps to relieve pain, joint stiffness and muscle soreness, as well as strengthen the immune system. Using the Photon Genius regularly helps the body to naturally increase its production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is vital for managing inflammation and scavenging free radicals in the body. Alive & Well Arizona, located at 2420 W. Ruthrauff Rd., Ste. 160, Tucson, offers Photon Genius sessions. Sessions are 50 minutes in length; package deals are available. The Algorithm for a Happy Life

T

he computer world can teach us how to focus on what we want. Information is power. So how can we collect the information we want for a happy experience in our life? We can make long lists of what is not good, but we don’t often focus on what we truly desire and put our undivided focus on that. We start with appreciation for what is in our lives now that is good and working for us. It starts with the feeling of “yes!” Feelings are energy that bring more of what is here now. When we look at our life and see what we like, what makes us alive, accepted and successful, that is the information that creates algorithms for success in any aspect of our lives. The opposite is also true. When we focus on what is not right in our lives, more of that comes to us. It is worthwhile to take time to evaluate our lives, our thoughts and our feeling household. To refocus can be difficult, but it is not impossible. We must appreciate what makes us feel good, safe, noticed and heard—pay attention, focus on what feels uplifting and observe while adjusting and moving closer to what we truly want. How can Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or hypnosis help us find the algorithm for a happy life? We need to remember that feelings are the key: we choose a happy feeling. EFT can then remove or reduce fear, doubt or pain that may be a hindrance. Hypnosis imprints these good feelings into our subconscious to easily find comfort with this desired happiness. While deeply relaxed, we anchor good feelings into our mind and body. This then results in automatic positive choices during normal activities, just like the pop-up ads appear on our computer. Maria Kingsley is a hypnotherapist and Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner. Connect at 520-780-0170.

Self-Care for Caretakers

HOME-STYLE COOKING

M

ost of us do not take very good care of ourselves even when there is not a crisis. Author and researcher Brené Brown says, “It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.” Most people in our culture are exhausted and push through the fatigue or pain. They may be on several medications with the belief that whatever symptoms they are masking, the problem is under control. Then one more big thing is added to a person’s plate, as in the face of an illness, death or job loss, and the person is beyond overwhelmed and scared. The caretaker allows no time for the gym, yoga, meditation or chiropractic. We have to “be there” for them, but can we really be helpful if we are not there for ourselves and locked in fight or flight mode? The caretaker hyper-focuses on the other person’s needs and often makes poor decisions because of poor self-care. Crisis is inevitable for all of us. In the Chinese language, it is described by two characters. One that represents danger and the other is opportunity. So all problems, if handled well, teach us things and have gifts within them. To find the gift, the caregiver must take care everyday so they are ready when the inevitable bigger problem arrives. Regular chiropractic care keeps our nervous system at ease, helping us to sleep better and make better choices.

MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts Reflexology: Making Space

I

Santa Rita Springs Dorothy Richmond, LMT Aquatic Massage Jin Shin Jyutsu Cranial Sacral

njuries and traumas of all kinds, along with emotional stress, create a protective tightening through our musculature that restricts space and limits how we move and function. This protective tension is often unconscious and difficult to detect on our own. Reflexology is very effective for opening space because it can dramatically reduce these sometimes long held tension patterns. Special techniques and gentle articulations—especially around the toes, ankles and inner arch—have a subtle but powerful effect on the nervous system. The parasympathetic (self-regulating) nervous system gets switched on, which activates essential processes like respiration, digestion, general nervous system regulation, cardiovascular and immune function, among others. Opening joint space can dramatically ease muscular and joint pain while allowing fluids and energy to flow evenly. Reflexologists simply but powerfully support the opening and unwinding of each client’s tension patterns so they can experience more space within their bodies. More space means the healing can happen more freely.

THE EMERGING POWER OF ‘WE’ Awakening to the Evolution of Community by Linda Sechrist

Z

en master Thich Nhat Hanh’s suggestion that the next Buddha would likely not take form as an individual but rather as a sangha, a community practicing mindful living, led many people to ask, “Why a community?” The author of more than 100 books that explore the Buddha’s core teachings on mindfulness, kindness and compassion, Hanh clarified the meaning of sangha as a good community necessary for helping individuals learn how to encounter life in the present moment, resist the unwholesome ways of our time, go in the direction of peace and nourish seeds of enlightenment. Even the best intentions, he noted, can falter without such a group of trusted family, friends and co-practitioners experiencing mindfulness together.

A Migration to Forming Community

Today’s trend toward collaborative processes and opportunities for transformation through online communities is made easier by the availability of affordable video conferencing providers such as Zoom, Skype and Mighty Networks, as well as online platforms like Facebook and MeetUp. Although many groups form for marketing, political, civic or social purposes—allowing 20

participants to share values and common interests—thousands more gather as online intentional communities associated with personal growth and spiritual awakening. Myriad individuals have been able to experience some aspect of community through international organizations such as MindValley, Hay House, the Shift Network and Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Jiyo, a wellness-focused mobile app intended to extend the reach of his ideas on health and social transformation from millions of people to more than 1 billion. In MeetUp, spiritual awakening groups recently comprised 1,113,972 members in 3,631 groups worldwide. Additionally, co-housing communities, spiritual residential communities and eco-villages continue to form around the intention of designing and implementing pathways to a regenerative future.

The Old Story Versus the New Story

The increased interest in intentional communities may hint at a possibility that the human desire for community might be nature’s evolutionary nudge toward a collective leap that helps us to survive a changing climate and Earth’s potential sixth mass

A Guiding Light

Seijaku Roshi, the abbot and founder of the Pine Wind Zen Community, aptly named for its location in a pine forest in Shamong, New Jersey, advises, “People are searching and hungering for community, which is number one on my agenda. If we aren’t talking about community, we’re squandering the moment. Whether it’s an evolutionary nudge or not, it appears that our tragic world situation is pushing us towards an alternative vision for living a meaningful life that meets the needs of people, society and the environment. We are awakening to the fact we’re interconnected, interdependent and need community, which is the spirit and guiding light whereby people come together to fulfill a purpose, to help others fulfill their purpose and to take care of one another.”

extinction. If so, this possibility needs a new supportive story that includes humans as part of nature, with its evolutionary impulse as a guide for body, mind and soul. With our modern scientific worldview, when people talk about nature, they typically mean animals, plants, geological features and natural processes, all happening independently of humans. A more suitable new story is cultural historian Thomas Berry’s moving and meaningful narrative in The Great Work: Our Way Into the Future, in which humans aren’t above nature by virtue of superior intellect, but instead are equal partners with all that exists in a materially and spiritually evolving universe. From Berry’s perspective, humans are the eyes, minds and hearts through which the cosmos is evolving so that it can come to know itself ever more perfectly through us. Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell shared Berry’s perspective. Traveling back to Earth after walking upon the lunar surface, Mitchell gazed out of the spacecraft window, whereupon he was flooded with an ecstatic awareness. “I was a part of the universe I was observing, and I became aware that everything that exists is part of one intricately interconnected whole,” recounts Mitchell, who founded the groundbreaking Institute of Noetic Sciences to explore the nature of human consciousness.

Conscious Evolution

Craig Hamilton, the guiding force behind the movement known as Integral Enlightenment, is the founder of the telecourse training program Academy for Evolutionaries. His spiritual guidance and teachings reach a growing international online community spanning 50 countries. “Transforming ourselves in the deepest possible way is, in fact, an evolutionary imperative, and we need to be able to identify the indicators of emergent shifts and participate creatively with change as an evolutionary force. Evolution up to this point has been playing out unconsciously. We’re now waking up and realizing that we can collaborate and participate in an emerging future.” Hamilton’s experience is that where humans awake to the one that is expressed through the many, they also begin to engage together. “Practicing community isn’t as simple as it seems. In online communities, a lot less can go wrong. The stakes aren’t as high. People come and go, share and engage as they like.”

A Community of Sisterhood

Laurie McCammon, author of Enough! How to Liberate Yourself and Remake the World with Just One Word, feels certain that humans are evolving. “We were last to the party with our big brains, and now we’re trying to intellectualize our way to an uncertain future without important feminine values such as feeling, intuiting, nurturing, interdependency and vulnerability,” says McCammon, who is deeply involved in the circle movement, in which women gather in small groups to empower each other. A regular participant in Gather the Women Global Matrix, a worldwide sisterhood that connects thousands of women sharing meaningful conversations and celebrating the divine feminine with the intention of bringing about personal and planetary transformation through cooperation and collaboration, McCammon says, “No one of us can bring about large-scale transformation alone. It’s time to tell the new story wherein our lives and actions demonstrate that together we are enough. Nonhierarchical circles that encourage authentic communication are part of this new story.” Citing other important circle commu-

nities such as Tree Sisters and The Millionth Circle, McCammon suggests that women tap into The Divine Feminine app, which allows them to find circle communities and events anywhere in the world.

Co-Creating With the Intelligence of Nature

Teacher and futurist Peter Russell writes books that are focused on consciousness and contemporary spirituality. His lectures help humans free themselves of limited beliefs and attitudes that belie many of humanity’s personal, social and global problems. The author of The Global Brain: The Awakening Earth in a New Century, Russell posits that the evolutionary process naturally draws humans together. “Humans are social creatures that need community, which I find very energizing,” says Russell, who cites the Findhorn Foundation eco-village, in Scotland, as a dynamic experiment in community. “Although residents went through hard times, they recognized the need for honest communication so they could attune to one another in loving ways that would allow everyone to work through their difficulties. Today, life at Findhorn is guided by the inner voice of spirit, and residents work in co-creation with the intelligence of nature,” he says.

The Collective Wisdom of Community

An uncertain future is emerging, making it necessary for new and more intuitive methods and spiritual practices for developing collective wisdom, human potential and the skills for practicing community. “I’m

in the process of finalizing 118 chapters from 90 different authors for a Collaborative Change Library: Transforming Organizations, Revitalizing Communities, Developing Human Potential,” says associate editor Carole Gorelick, who clarifies that spiritual practices are now playing a part in bringing about collaborative change. She notes that several chapters are updated versions of The Change Handbook: The Definitive Resource on Today’s Best Methods for Engaging Whole Systems (2007 second edition), which included modalities such as World Café, Open Space Technology, Art of Hosting, Appreciative Inquiry and many others. A living handbook for developing human potential and the skills to practice community, Fred Eppsteiner has been teaching Buddhism for 23 years. A student of Hanh’s since the 1960s, he is the founder of the Florida Community of Mindfulness, in Tampa. Eppsteiner sums up why the next Buddha could be a community: “A better future will be created by people who are living the values they want for the world, not just abstractly using only the intellect. In community, we ask ourselves, ‘Can I be what I want to see in the world? Can I practice these things mindfully in community with love, acceptance, deep listening, compassion and kindness?’ These are values that every Buddha has lived for centuries, and certainly ones we need to evolve from a culture of, ‘It’s all about me’ to a culture of, ‘It’s all about we’.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. There is an easier way to socialize and enjoy the festivities without putting our body through the above-mentioned symptoms and increased pain. Here are five tips to make it a smoother transition and keep our bodies feeling optimal. Always carry food when leaving the house. This will provide a healthy snack or food option when away from the house. Eat this snack item to help curve the cravings until returning home. Eat a full meal at home before attending a holiday event. Arriving with a full stomach will decrease chances of indulgence in any “forbidden foods”. Also, take along a delicious approved dish to enjoy and share with others. This just might pique their interest in changing some of their dietary choices.

Holiday Tips for People with Food Restrictions by Jean Read

T

hose of us who follow a restricted diet due to food sensitivities or a new eating protocol (keto, paleo, gluten-free) often find the holidays to be a particular challenge, as we are invited to holiday parties and work events where the food and beverages are frequently full of dairy, gluten, sugar and alcohol. We know that these foods cause an elevation of inflammation to the body, and while some handle it better than others, one night of indulgence can wreak havoc on our digestion, sleep, mental clarity, energy and mood over the next one to three days.

If there is a food or beverage item that just can’t be resisted, take a small serving (one to two bites). Eat it very slowly and indulge in the flavors and textures fully. Studies show that after three to four bites of a food, we really quit tasting it and are just shoveling it in while cleaning our plate. Often, we may find that the food doesn’t taste quite as good as we remembered because taste buds have changed. Try Intermittent Fasting (IF) for the next month. Eat only during a six- or eighthour window each day and only drink coffee, tea or water outside of that time frame. This allows the body to spend time cleaning,

repairing and restoring health during the fasting time, instead of using energy to digest food over 12 hours a day. Studies of IF show improved blood sugar levels, reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol and more when IF is incorporated daily for six months or more. This has also shown to assist with weight loss. More favorable results are achieved when limiting dairy, wheat, sugar and alcohol consumption during the eating time frame. Increase intake of avocados, coconut milk and oil, and pour on the olive oil to vegetables and salads instead. This gives the body a great source of fuel that will keep the mind clear and energy levels even. If there is an extra few pounds on the scale in the morning after overindulging, try a full day of fasting. Drinking keto coffee provides healthy fats to keep energy up during the morning. Have a small meal at lunch loaded with medium chain triglycerides (coconut oil and milk, avocados, nuts and seeds, olive oil) and a keto coffee at the end of the work day. Medium chain triglycerides don’t store as fat in the body and provide an excellent energy source to the brain and mitochondria. The extra fasting time allows the body to clean the inflammatory foods and inflammation from the body. During the day, we should drink half our body weight in ounces of water. So, someone weighing 150 pounds should drink 75 ounces of water minimum. This keeps us hydrated and assists the kidneys with flushing out the system. Trying one or more of the above tips can help us stay committed to our health and well-being, making it easier to get through the holidays without cheating. Enjoy the holidays with a stomach full of foods that support the body’s health and continued journey to well-being. by fear, wanting or clinging. When we interact with others, our connection is genuine. We see people instead of judgments or labels. Being generous arises from the heart, not the wallet. We don’t need to have material wealth in order to be generous. The only requirement is a willingness to open our hearts, to see life as it is and to interact with others from a place of compassion and love. Some examples of generous acts are:

How Giving Transforms Us

O

by Cindy Ricardo

ne of the ways we come into balance and connection with each other and with life is by giving from the heart. When we give to others, whether it’s an act of kindness, generosity or compassion, it helps us live from the heart instead of the ego. Living from the ego is painful and exhausting. It’s like feeding a hungry monster that’s never satisfied. Ego craves, pursues and clings to status, approval, material wealth and control. It views the world through the eyes of fear—constantly evaluating, judging and acting in ways that are self-centered, defensive and protective. Like with Scrooge, ego closes our heart and

makes us small, fearful and contracted. By contrast, generosity requires that we open our hearts to the world and each other. We allow ourselves to be vulnerable. In doing this, we open ourselves fully to life, love and relationships. We let go of striving and pursuing things. When we stop striving, we begin to see, value and respond to what’s happening in the present moment in ways that are healthy and healing. Our priority shifts from acquiring things to appreciating what we have and being open to sharing with others. Generosity is a quality of kindness, of living from a place of abundance. We see the world through a clear lens that isn’t clouded

n Setting aside what we’re doing and listening to someone in need of emotional support. n Telling loved ones what we appreciate about them. n Listening to children and trying to see the world through their eyes before offering advice. n Smiling at a stranger. n When asking, “How are you?” looking into the person’s eyes and taking time to truly listen with an attitude of curiosity and compassion. Generosity awakens goodness in the heart, and this helps us open to life, love and relationships. Cindy Ricardo is a Coral Springs, Floridabased psychotherapist who blogs at ACaringCounselor.com.

100+ Women Who Care in Tucson

Supporting Local Charities

D

esha Bymers-Davis is the Founder of the Tucson chapter of 100+ Women Who Care, which is a group of local philanthropic women who are doing great things in our community. The goal of the group is to support the worthwhile work of local charities by providing funds, exposure and awareness with a minimal investment of time. The genesis of this Tucson group was somewhat

accidental in that it started when BymersDavis broke her right foot in March 2015. She explains, “I have to drive because I’m in sales, so I was off work for 13 weeks. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t sit still very well. My son had recently graduated from college, and I was ready to transition from devoting so much time to parenting to wanting to make a difference. I had seen a post on Facebook about

the Omaha, Nebraska chapter, where a woman said it was, ‘The best one hour I’ve ever spent. One hour, 100 women, $10,000 of local impact for charity.’” This piqued her interest, so she looked for a chapter in Tucson, and found there was none. “I reached out to the gal heading up the Phoenix chapter, and discovered we both attended the University of South Dakota, and she graduated three years prior to me. We had a natural connection. She encouraged me to start the Tucson group,” Bymers-Davis remarks. “I paid $5 to Etsy for our first logo, and created a website. I invited a woman from every decade of life to my house to explain my mission. I made our first video on iMovie, which went viral—156 women came to the first meeting.” The quarterly meetings are run by volunteers along with some generous financial support from sponsors. “Our sponsors are amazing. I wanted all the money we raised at the meetings to go to the charities. But since I come from corporate America, I also wanted to plan a special event which would attract donors. Thanks to our sponsors, we accomplished that,” Bymers-Davis comments.

How it Works

Four times a year, members attend The Big Give, where each member gives $100. The first hour of each meeting is a social/ networking hour, before the group settles down to business. During each meeting, three of the charities which have been nominated by members are selected in a drawing from a hat. Then, a representative from each charity drawn makes a brief pre-

sentation about why they should be the recipient of the donation. After the presentations and a Q&A session by members, an anonymous ballot is held and the charity with the most votes will be the recipient. The charities can receive $20,000 or more if they get the most votes and are ultimately selected to receive that group’s quarterly donation. Winning charities are required to sit out the next 18 months before being eligible to go in the hat again. The selected charity is invited back to the next quarterly meeting to share with the members the impact their donations made. Currently, the group has 225 members. “Our goal is to reach a membership of 500 women, so we will be able to make an even greater impact. We’re looking for more women to be able to give back even more to our community. We’re going to give our largest donation yet in December, which will be almost $25,000 to Literacy Connects. If you can’t read, it’s hard to succeed in society,” she opines. Does $100 make an impact? Bymers-Davis quotes Satoro, “Individually we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.” Recounting the story of the Diaper Bank donation, Bymers-Davis remembers when she called to let the Diaper Bank know they were the quarterly recipient, the man who answered the phone seemed shook up. There was a reason for his emotional response. “He told me that they had just gotten an opportunity to receive a million dollars in diapers, however they did not have the money in their coffers to pay the shipping costs. When I told him the donation was $17,000 he said, ‘Guess how much the shipping costs are—$16,900.’ Here you see how $100 turned into $17,000, which turned into $1,000,000 in diapers,” she observes. The 100+ Women Who Care Tucson Group and BymersDavis were recognized by the Ben’s Bells Project for their work in the community. “They announced it at the quarterly meeting. I felt very special and honored,” she emotes.

Becoming a Member

The group proves that we don’t have to be wealthy to be a philan-

thropist. 100+ Women Who Care allows women from all demographics to participate as members. Members must make a commitment to make an annual donation of $415.60 ($103.90 per quarter) to local 501(c)(3) charities serving the Tucson metro area. Members are required to enroll in a quarterly autopay plan, where $100 of the amount is donated to the selected charity and $3.90 covers the cost of credit card and administrative fees. 100+ Women Who Care Tucson is for women who: have limited time but a heart for giving; are willing to commit to one hour every three months; want to learn more about the amazing work being done by local nonprofits; want to be part of a caring and amazing group of women who are making a positive impact in our community; and want 100 percent of their donations to go directly to a local charity.

Sponsors

Sponsors are an integral component to the success of 100+. Bymers-Davis reached out to the real estate community for sponsors after she purchased several rental properties. The first sponsor of the group was Karen Fisher, a mortgage broker at Summit Mortgage. The second sponsor was Kim Clifton, owner of Tierra Antigua Real Estate. Subsequently, sponsors who wanted to give back to the community, such as Sierra Tucson, reached out to her. There are also in kind sponsors. Natural Awakenings Magazine donates advertising space. Arclight Pictures produces a video at each “give” which shows the impact of the money donated from the previous quarter. They also donate microphones and audio for the events. “Our sponsors are amazing. We couldn’t do what we do without them. We are essentially a grassroots organization, and we rely primarily upon word of mouth and social media to grow our membership,” says Bymers-Davis. 100+ Women Who Care Tucson is a conduit which is making a difference in Tucson. These fabulous women who love to give are making an impact in our community. To attend the next upcoming giving circle at the Westin La Paloma Resort, mark the calendar for January 21, 2020, and get to know the nonprofits that are making dreams a reality. place to live,” says Agrillo. “We produce an annual philanthropic gala, hopefully sell it out, tell jokes, get the money and give it to local nonprofits. How cool is that?” The first show produced by Agrillo was in 2011 at Laffs Comedy Caffe, shortly after the events of January 8, 2011, when six people were killed and thirteen others, including then U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, were injured in a shooting rampage. That event was the genesis of her annual Comedy for Charity gala at the Fox Theatre. The shows have raised money for many worthwhile charities, including Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse; Youth on Their Own; Rally Point, La Frontera; YWCA of Southern Arizona; Ben’s Bells; Youth on Their Own; Dancing in the Streets AZ; Send a Kid to Camp; and Saving Gil.

A Sense of Community

L

aughter really is the best medicine, and that’s not just a cliché. The founder of Comedy for Charity, Suzie Agrillo, has experienced a tragedy which brought home the truthfulness of that phrase. In 1980, her sister Judy was shot in the head and killed during a mugging in Chicago. As a result of this senseless tragedy, Agrillo found her calling in life: to make the world a safer, kinder and less violent place. “You have to carry on after a nightmare like this, and I decided to focus on the community, by raising money for organizations which make Tucson a better

With 2020 being Comedy for Charity’s 10th anniversary show, Agrillo looks back on the charities she has supported. We all know it is better to give than to receive. However, when we are making a financial gift to a nonprofit, how do we know the funds are going to good use? “I research nonprofits by going to their websites and social media for clues about how legitimate they are, what their mission is and what their current needs are. Guidestar.org is a trusted online resource that houses information about an organization’s mission, tax exempt status, impact and financial information,” Agrillo states.

Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse has been a beneficiary of several of Comedy for Charity’s events. It essentially provides the opportunity to create, sustain and celebrate a life free of abuse. Agrillo notes, “Their work has a powerful impact on our community.” Youth on Their Own is a nonprofit which strives to eliminate the barriers to education and empower Arizona homeless youth to stay in school. “Arizona has a very high rate of child homelessness. Homeless youth are four times more likely to drop out of school, which means they are likely to become unemployable as adults,” Agrillo observes. Ben’s Bells spreads a message of kindness. “It resonated with me, partly because it was inspired by the tragic death of founder Jeannette Mare’s young son Ben,” Agrillo relates. It started as a small local charity which has grown to an international movement. In addition to bells which are handmade in their art studios, and the murals you see all over Tucson, Ben’s Bells operates a Kindness Education program which teaches people how to cultivate kindness. Agrillo is a dog lover, and one of her favorite success stories was the Jeanne Robertson show in 2019, where over $4,000 was raised for Saving Gil, a black lab who was shot point blank with a shotgun and left for dead in northern Arizona. “The shotgun blast rendered him paralyzed and incontinent. Thanks to the money raised by generous Tucsonans, Gil could afford a new wheelchair as well as expense for transportation to his new adoptive family in Durango, Colorado,” she says. Since Comedy for Charity has no employees, Agrillo relies on her friends to volunteer to assist with the comedy shows. She comments, “I am blessed with some of the best friends imaginable. I gravitate to people who are smart, kind and who appreciate humor. I like to do a girls’ lunch about once a week.” Agrillo also performs standup comedy at Laffs Comedy Caffe for the Estrogen Hour, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as well as at some of the shows at the Fox Theatre. When asked how she found her own voice in comedy, Agrillo explains, “I decided to do stand-up 10 years ago, after I attended my family reunion. I felt I needed to use it

Gil and Cocoa as a catharsis, because my family is somewhat dysfunctional,” she explains. Comedy for Charity’s upcoming headliner is Paula Poundstone, a popular panelist on NPR’s weekly comedy quiz, “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” She has achieved many firsts in her comedy career. She is the first woman ever to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She starred in her own series on HBO and ABC. She is included in Comedy Central’s list of the Top 100 Comics of All Time, and she has won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Stand Up. “We are co-presenting this event with the Fox Theatre. A portion of the ticket sales from the show will benefit local or-

ganizations which assist the homeless. It is our goal to provide support to those whose voices are most often not heard and who have the greatest need,” Agrillo comments. Tucson is renowned for many things, including exclusive golf courses, world class spas and sherbet sunsets. Most importantly, the locals know how to give. If you want to “laugh ‘til it hurts,” save the date for Comedy for Charity’s 10th anniversary charitable event, “An Evening With Paula Poundstone,” May 8, 2020 at the Fox Theatre. Conscious Awakenings by Alexcis Lopez

S

pend any time in the healing/spiritual community, and people will be heard talking about conscious awakenings. Often the exact details of what a conscious awakening is, or how it will unfold in our lives, aren’t discussed—but the life-changing stories of those who have experienced an awakening call to us with promises of a better and happier life. The reasons for seeking out an awakening are varied, but often revolve around feeling stuck in negative emotions like anxiety or anger, or feeling trapped in old traumatic wounds and behaviors that lead to PTSD, depression and addiction. Or, sometimes the awakening finds us and we are launched into a shift without any premeditated plan. There is no one path that leads to an awakening, but it usually starts with a desire to heal and an exploration of different types of healing and spiritual practices that take us out of our comfort zone. One thing is for certain: the longer we are consciously engaged in our healing journey, the more likely it is that we will experience one or more awakenings along the way. This is

28

Tucson Edition

why it is important to get clarity on what exactly a conscious awakening can entail, so we can better partner the process when it happens. Imagine being shown the joy and miracle of a baby but never being told about the birthing process. How confusing the pain of contractions would be if we had no idea that they are a natural and normal part of the bigger picture. Without understanding, we might try to stop the birth mid-process, adding more confusion and pain. If we are not given the whole picture then we cannot know the connection between the messy, painful, even frightening birthing process and the resulting new life. Similarly in the healing/spiritual community, we too often only hear about the amazing results of a conscious awakening, while not enough is said about the birthing process involved in getting there. It is important to realize that what an “awakening” means is a rebirth, a shift in paradigms, a change in consciousness. For a rebirth to happen there will inevitably be a death that must occur. Life as we know it will fall away, “truths” must be questioned, friends lost, beliefs

shattered, ways of being shifted. We will have to turn in and face ourselves, our feelings, thoughts and behaviors in new ways. We simply cannot have an awakening and stay in the same mental-emotional patterns that have been feeding our traumatized, unhappy, wounded states of being up to this point. In other words, we cannot move into a different consciousness and expect things to stay the same. This stripping away and breaking down of our old ways can leave us feeling exhausted, raw, broken open and overwhelmed. We find ourselves wondering if we are doing it wrong, because the awakening we are experiencing mid-shift is the complete opposite of what we had been hoping for. It is important to know that it is in those moments of utter vulnerability, raw openness and being stripped bare that the foundation of a new way of thinking, feeling and reacting is taking place. The breakthrough we are hoping for is often born through a breakdown. This bigger picture understanding should not deter us from seeking an awakening, but instead give us strength and courage to continue when we find ourselves in the long night of our own re-birthing journey. While we cannot know exactly what is uniquely in store for us, knowing that there can be challenges allows us to find purpose in the temporary discomfort of the work and helps us surrender to the healing process. With more awareness, we can partner instead of fight the releasing of that which no longer serves us—helping us look forward to the new life that is unfolding. THE MERRY VEGAN People-Pleasing Holiday Sweets

Peanut Butter Cookies (Vegan, Gluten Free) Yields: About 18 cookies 1 cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup coconut sugar ½ cup brown sugar 2 tsp vanilla ⅔ cup oat flour 1 tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt ¼ cup almond milk Additional sugar to roll cookies in

he holidays may send too many sugar plums and frosted gingerbread figures dancing in the heads of people with dietary restrictions. Anyone that chooses to avoid highly processed flours or sugars, artificial ingredients and loads of butter will typically be presented with all of this and more at social gatherings this time of year. They arrive on visually appealing cookie platters that tempt with their cute shapes, vibrant colors and sparkle. Some, like the gingerbread and reindeer cutouts, will beckon with glazed eyes: “Just one,” they whisper. But one can turn into nine and make someone that may normally avoid sugar or gluten feel bodily regrets. Someone that is vegan or allergic may feel they can’t have treats. Making healthier choices about food is difficult for reasons many don’t understand. “People have relationships with food—involving family, comfort and traditions—and they don’t want to give that up,” says James Brandon, of Tampa, founder of Facebook’s Vegan and PlantBased Beginner’s Community. Brandon says that holiday treats are tough to resist, but staying true to health goals is most important in the long run. The best defense to avoid frustration at

social food events is to bring a dish to share that meets your dietary needs, says Megan Gilmore, the author of No Excuses Detox: 100 Recipes to Help You Eat Healthy Every Day and a blogger at Detoxinista.com. “That way, you can introduce something delicious to your friends, family or co-workers and be sure you’ll have something to eat!” A batch of simple, delectable, visually appealing and healthful cookies can be that plate to share, a gift to give or something to keep on hand for guests. Keep the focus on simple, advises Pamela Reed, who blogs at BrooklynFarmGirl.com. There are plenty of recipes that will satisfy the sweet tooth and decorate the holiday buffet (until they’re all eaten, that is). Don’t increase holiday stress by trying a new recipe at the last minute. “Stick with your favorite recipes that you know are going to be a success and are going to leave everyone’s taste buds happy,” she says. Transitioning to a more conscious way of eating isn’t about deprivation or leaving tradition behind. Bring on the new and healthful cookie recipes and name one after your grandma. Preheat oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, cream together peanut butter and sugars with a hand mixer. Once combined, add vanilla and continue mixing. Add flour, baking soda, salt and almond milk into the bowl and mix for a few seconds, until combined. The cookie dough will be a little crumbly. Prepare 2 cookie sheets with silicone baking sheets or spray with nonstick spray. Roll the dough into large balls, and then gently roll in sugar to cover them. Use a fork to gently press down on each cookie a little bit—not too much, or they will crumble. Bake cookies for 12 minutes. Once out of the oven, allow to cool for 15 minutes. This is important, as the cookies will be very soft when they come out of the oven, but they will harden up as they cool. Store in an airtight container or freeze. 1 cup soft Medjool dates, pitted (about 10 dates) 1 Tbsp coconut oil ½ tsp sea salt ½ tsp vanilla extract ½ cup arrowroot or tapioca starch Extra arrowroot for dusting, or coconut sugar Place the pecans and shredded coconut in a large food processor fitted with an “S” blade, and process until the pecans are broken down and crumbly. Add in the rest of the ingredients and process again, until a sticky dough is formed. (It should stick together when pressed between two fingers.) Scoop the dough by rounded tablespoons and roll the dough between your hands, forming balls. Arrange the balls on a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then place them in the freezer to set, about 1 to 2 hours. For a “snowball” look, roll the balls in additional arrowroot or tapioca starch—just a light coating will do—since the starch will not enhance the flavor. It’s just for looks! Note: If you’d prefer to roll the balls in co-

No-Bake Peanut Butter Cup Bars (Vegan, Gluten Free) Chocolate Crust: ¾ cup ground almond meal 2 Tbsp cocoa powder 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup 1 Tbsp melted coconut oil Pinch of sea salt Peanut Butter Filling: ½ cup creamy natural peanut butter 3 Tbsp pure maple syrup 1 Tbsp melted coconut oil Pinch of sea salt Chocolate Topping: ¼ cup cocoa powder ¼ cup melted coconut oil 3 Tbsp pure maple syrup

Line a standard loaf pan with parchment paper and set it aside. In a medium bowl, stir together the chocolate crust ingredients until a moist dough is formed. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the lined loaf pan and place it in the freezer to set. To prepare the filling, you can use the same bowl to stir the peanut butter, maple syrup, coconut oil and salt. Depending on whether you’re using salted or unsalted peanut butter, consider adding more salt to taste. Storebought peanut butter cups are quite salty, so I like to add a generous pinch of salt to mimic that flavor. Remove the crust from the freezer and pour the peanut butter filling over the top, using a spatula to spread it out evenly. Return the pan to the freezer to set. Rinse the mixing bowl and use it again to make the final layer. Combine the cocoa powder, melted coconut oil and maple syrup, whisking well to break up any clumps. Once the mixture has become a smooth chocolate sauce, pour it over the peanut butter layer, and return the pan to the freezer to set until firm, about an hour or two. Once the bars are firm, grab the edges of parchment paper to easily lift the solid bar from the pan, and use a sharp knife to slice the bars into your desired size. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks, or in the freezer for up to a month. (The bars become very firm if frozen for too long, so I prefer serving them from the fridge after the initial firming-up time.) Source: Detoxinista.com/no-bake-peanutbutter-cup-bars-vegan

The Medicinal Uses for Holiday Decorations

‘T

by J. Garnet

is the season to see all of the annual decorations that bring about warm memories, cheer and joy. Most often, the overlapping holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah have their own special color schemes, food, plants and flowers and other adornments— poinsettia plants, holly berries, mistletoe, blue delphinium, cranberries, white lilies, white roses and of course, Christmas trees. What most people don’t realize is that all of these natural decorations also have some effective medicinal values. Although stunning to look at, many people have warned children and animals to stay away from poinsettias because they’re poisonous. Surprisingly, this beautiful holiday plant has a number of medicinal benefits. While it is true that the poinsettia belongs to a group of plants that are poisonous, the variety used for decorating for the season is not to be feared. There are still poisonous components of the plant, but the amount of leaves that would need to be eaten to have an adverse reaction is huge—over 500. From the roots to the bracts to the flowers, most parts of the poinsettia can be used medicinally. The plant is used to kill parasites in the gastrointestinal tract. The 32

roots can be ground into a paste and eaten to end the stomach flu. The Christmas plant is also used to stop diarrhea and prevent dehydration. Although immediate medical attention should be sought out after being bitten by a snake, poinsettias can be used as a “first-responder” in treatment. The sap from the leaves can be applied to a stubborn wart that won’t go away, or directly applied to pimples and other skin irritations. The sap is also used as a hair remover. The blue delphinium has some controversy as far as the medicinal qualities because of the continued research on the plant, but has been used to treat insomnia, intestinal worms, fluid retention and lack of appetite. The leaves of the white lily can be placed on cuts and wounds as an instant pain reliever. The root of the white lily can be boiled and made into a poultice to put on the chest when congestion is present. Drinking tea two or three times daily made from the beautiful white flowers can help treat infections of the skin and nails, insomnia, heart palpitations, memory loss and ear infections. White roses are usually seen throughout the days of Hanukkah. Roses, full of antioxidants, are known to relieve headaches,

soothe a sore throat and skin irritations, improve mood and help heal cuts and burns. Rose petals can be eaten raw or boiled down to make a light and refreshing tea. A holiday feast would be lacking without the appearance of cranberries. Cranberry sauce, jelly and jams are often a much loved addition to the meal. Cranberries are often categorized as a superfood because of their high levels of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. The cranberry has also been shown to prevent certain types of cancer and maintain a healthy urinary tract. Many holiday decorations are adorned with holly berries and pine cones. Both of these are packed full of natural treatments for ailments and disease. When the correct dosing is decided by a medical professional, holly is a superstar used in treating fever, high blood pressure, digestive issues and rheumatoid arthritis. The star of the holiday season is the Christmas tree, usually a pine variety. All pine trees produce pine cones. Green pine cones have been used as a medicine in the Far East for centuries. Boiling or grinding the pine cone can be used in teas that aid in fighting off respiratory infections. The needles are full of antioxidants and reduce inflammation. They are used in tea form to combat depression, boost memory and as a treatment for some cancers. Christmas cannot be complete until a stolen kiss takes place under the mistletoe. In Europe, the mistletoe is used to treat cancer, and it is believed that over 50 percent of cancer patients being treated in Europe have used some form of mistletoe extract. Mistletoe is also used to combat high blood pressure and diabetes. The holiday season is one of joy and cheer, and for conjuring warm memories. The festive decorations are full of color and aromas that make the holiday complete. It’s

Pond Plants Offer Protein Strategy

Fast-growing lemna, or duckweed, a flowering green plant that blooms on the surface of still and slow-moving bodies of water that is often mistaken for algae, is finding new utility as a protein source. California-based Plantible Foods claims that duckweed, traditionally the enemy of pond owners, is superior to other alternative proteins like pea, wheat and soy. The unusual crop naturally contains higher amounts of the complete protein RuBisCo and is easier to digest than some other popular plant proteins. It can be used as a substitute for egg white, is free of the top eight allergens and has a neutral color and taste. Due to its rapid growth, duckweed is less vulnerable to climate change. Plantible Foods co-founder Tony Martens says that duckweed grows reliably and can typically be harvested daily, no matter what the weather may be.

he human body has been the subject of study for well over 2,000 years. With numerous complexities, scientists throughout the ages have theorized, discovered, researched and proven many of the body’s systems—the processes that keep the human body alive and functioning every single day. In the second century, a Greek physician, Galen of Pergamon, a doctor for Roman Emperors for decades, theorized about the circulatory system. In the sixteenth century, William Harvey published the first

accurate definition of blood circulation. In the 1870s, Ivan Pavlov helped broaden the understanding of the digestive system, and in 1909, J. S. Haldane discovered the respiratory system. In 1964, an Israeli scientist named Robert Mechoulam was instrumental in discovering the first phytocannabinoid on the marijuana plant. This began the long road to discovering the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a pathway of energy affecting almost every area of the human body. Decades after Mechoulam’s work, a postdoctoral neuropharmacologist, Nick DiPatrizio, identified the first cannabinoid receptor in the brain. This brought light to why people felt euphoric when smoking marijuana. DiPatrizio expanded his research on cannabinoid receptors in the brain to other areas of the body. He discovered that, in rats, hunger increased the endocannabinoid levels in the small intestines and that the signaling was coming from the gut rather than from the brain. DiPatrizio discovered a second receptor that was not central to the nervous system. It was from this discovery that the complexity of the ECS was revealed. The first endocannabinoid receptor discovered in the brain and central nervous system is named CB1, and the endocannabinoid receptors named CB2 are

located elsewhere throughout the body. Today, researchers are calling the ECS the most complex system in the body. Its primary function is to keep the body balanced and in homeostatic harmony. The human body produces endocannabinoids naturally, and the cannabinoids from the marijuana plant, when ingested, attach themselves to the endocannabinoids. This triggers a reaction that activates the endocannabinoid system. This sets off a chain reaction where the body begins to take action regarding a rebalance of systems. In effect, this cannabinoid reaction begins the healing process throughout the body. Any stimulus that upsets the delicate balance of our internal environment is attacked by the body’s immune system, with the ECS being the general, keeping all bodily functions in check. The ECS has been shown to play a principal role in digestion, metabolism, fighting inflammation and chronic pain, mood, memory, motor skills, cardiovascular system, liver function, bone growth and remodeling, the reproductive system and the skin and all its nerve functions. This is only a partial list of where the ECS has shown to be beneficial in maintaining or treating ailments in the body. All of the benefits that the ECS offers are traced back to the cannabinoids of the marijuana plant and how they are helpful on so many levels within the body. It’s taken centuries for scientists to fully understand the complexity of the human body. With its circulatory system, respiratory and digestive systems, the neurological functions of the brain, and now the endocannabinoid system, there is a continuous inquiry into bodily systems and functions, it’s a revelation when something new and exciting about the human body is discovered. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system has launched the progress and advancement of medicine, and how to treat conditions, ailments and diseases, into a new trajectory—one that will be based on plant medicine and everything natural. Plant-Based Medicine for Quality of Life by Zachary Saber

here is extensive research on the history of medicinal plants available today. Regretfully, today’s world requires us to differentiate between manmade, chemical laden pesticides/growth hormones and organics. Plant-based medicine is the basis of naturopathic medicine. Everything we put in our body is a medicine. We are either fueling our body, mind or soul or we are harming it. For many, we see the need to raise organic foods in our gardens or to buy and plant organic plants/produce, while others need to hike in a natural environment to feel nature’s healing effects. This of course feeds the soul and the mind as well as the body, effectively helping us feel better in our bodies. Medicinal plants have been discovered and used in traditional medicine practices since prehistoric times. Plants synthesize hundreds of chemical compounds. The earliest historical records of herbs are found from the Sumerian civilization, where hundreds of medicinal plants are listed on clay tablets. The Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides documented over 1,000 recipes

Plant Medicine Section Sponsored by Earth’s Healing

for medicines using over 600 medicinal plants in c. 60 AD; this formed the basis of pharmacopoeias for some 1,500 years. Drug research makes use of ethnobotany to search for pharmacologically active substances in nature, and has in this way discovered hundreds of useful compounds. These include the common drugs aspirin (Willow Bark), digoxin (Foxglove), quinine (cinchona tree) and opium (poppy). Organic plants tend to be more nutritious with more healthy compounds, enzymes and vitamins. How this happens depends on the source; however, organic farmers tend to have healthier soil, which leads to better crops and better health for the consumers, which could be animals as well as humans. In order to truly be a medicinal plant, it must be organically grown, raised and utilized. Organic rules require no pesticides be used, no genetic modifications and no man-made chemicals to grow the product, whether it is plant-based or animal-based. Many animals are injected with antibiotics to help fight off possible infections so that the animals do not die before processing. Often, animals are injected

with hormones to encourage getting fatter sooner. These hormones are absorbed into our own body, increasing cancer rates in both men and women. The use of these drugs is not allowed in organic foods. Studies are still proving that ingesting meat or foods with antibiotics or hormones has adverse effects on our own bodies and well-being. Often, the waste products of the animals are used as fertilizers which, again, infiltrates our own bodies with residues of unhealthy byproducts— increasing disease, illness, digestive issues, sleep issues, diabetes, cancer and more. Organic foods contain a better nutrient profile, meaning we get more antioxidants, omega-3 fats and compounds that help prevent inflammation. For example, a conventionally grown stalk of broccoli can cause inflammation, while an organic stalk will relieve inflammation. We see the same problems with wheat, corn and soy which is no longer edible and provides no nutritional value to whomever or whatever ingests it. Being savvy of the source of the plants we purchase and grow is essential to knowing the quality of what we are nurturing,

especially if we are planning on eating it or using it to make topical medicines. Look for locally sourced products first and find out how they are grown. Are they organic or conventional? If conventional, keep looking for a source. Check the local farmers’ market and ask questions. Get suggestions from a naturopath, healer or trusted source. We must take the time to make ourselves and our family the priority they should rightfully be, and to that end, we can use plants as the medicine they are to improve our quality of life.
