Chiropractic Solutions
D
r. Harlan Sparer, a holistic chiropractor, has limited his practice in Sedona and Tempe to the Directional Non Force Technique® (DNFT), developed by Dr. Richard Van Rumpt. It involves a precise analysis and correction of subluxations causing nerve interference, considering alignment from front-to-back (posterior), side-to-side (lateral), tilted or back-to-front (anterior) and front-to-back (posterior). The bones, ligaments, muscles and discs are aligned utiDr. Harlan Sparer lizing the thumbs to adjust them with a few ounces of force. The reactive leg reflex is the indicator utilized to determine which segments are out of alignment. This is a leg that dynamically shortens in response to a physical challenge to the malpositioned segment. Chiropractic problems require the location and removal of subluxation (a bone and its contiguous structures out of alignment, causing nerve interference). Sparer treats the whole person, understanding that sometimes the body, mind and spirit need to be addressed together to find true cause and restore health. He knows that health is not merely the absence of disease; it is a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Contact Dr. Sparer at 480-245-7894 in Tempe and 928-282-2824 in Sedona. Visit TempeNonforce.com. See ad on page 33.

Family by Helen D’Souza Fluid figures reminiscent of Henri Matisse curve sinuously through the works of Helen D’Souza, interspersed with mystical symbols and natural elements derived from Mother Earth. Vibrantly rendered in saturated hues, they form a dreamlike montage where movement and meditation converge in pure joy. During D’Souza’s 20-year career, her powerful images have communicated words and concepts via multiple mediums. She recognized her calling from day one, she says, “drawing, making things and collecting beautiful natural objects, such as stones, feathers and shells.” Today, she fills her house in the colorful India Bazaar neighborhood of Toronto with these inspiring treasures, noting how, “Nature is the greatest artist.” Recently, D’Souza began exploring ceramics and pottery, plus drawing and writing on plates and bowls, to make utilitarian objects beautiful. She enjoys the earthy feel of working with clay. D’Souza frequently volunteers her time and talents; this summer she is working with multicultural children at a center that helps struggling families that are new to Canada. “In a world that can be full of chaos and sadness,” D’Souza muses, “art and beauty are sustaining and constant. Beauty feeds the soul.” View the artist’s portfolio at HelenDSouza.com. Contact her at her Toronto studio, 416-466-0630 or Helen@ HelenDSouza.com. natural awakenings

Native Seeds/SEARCH—Farmland Steward
T Don’t hate, it’s too big a burden to bear. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
his Southwest indigenous seed conservation organization is dedicated to seed saving, bioregionalism and food security. Outreach includes educational programs, free seed to community organizations, a conservation farm, retail store and seed bank. A hundred years ago, people saved seeds that became part of the public trust. Today’s organic farmers and gardeners should be saving their own seed from plants selected for characteristics such as pest resistance, hardiness, earliness and taste that work best for them. There is no other way to turn the tide of the industrialization of our food system than to think seeds first. Native Seeds/SEARCH has been conserving and promoting the rich agricultural diversity of the Southwest’s indigenous seeds for more than 28 years. The nonprofit’s programs include an innovative, six-day Seed School (Grain School, Fruit School, Seed Library School). Seed School teaches gardeners, farmers, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and policymakers how to implement long-term, self sufficient, secure agricultural programs. Become a member and volunteer at the Conservation Center in Tucson or Farm in Patagonia, Arizona. The retail store features everything local, including Southwest seeds, at 3061 N. Campbell. Innovative Acupuncture by Marilyn Brewer
C
ommunity acupuncture is a way to bring this ancient and miraculous form of healing to a larger sphere of awareness by treating people in a group setting, usually in comfortable recliner chairs. This is the delivery mode used in Asia. Treatment in a group setting allows the cost to be reduced, enabling more people to receive ongoing treatment to achieve the desired results. French ear acupuncture, as administered at the “Circle of Friends” acupuncture clinic, adheres to the teachings of Dr. Paul Nogier, a neurologist from Lyon, France, who is considered the father of modern auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture). He observed the occurrence of scars on the ears of patients that had been cauterized by a folk doctor for treatment of sciatic pain, and from that observation, went on to map the entire ear. The anatomical correlation be-
came to be known as the “inverted fetus.” Nogier presented his findings in China in 1958, which were validated by the Nanjing Army Ear Acupuncture Research team. Auriculotherapy, following Nogier’s theory, uses the ear to help determine whether the right and left hemispheres of the brain are functioning as a dynamic whole; whether there are specific neurological, musculoskeletal or organ systems that are in imbalance; and whether there are
any blockages to treatment, such as scar tissue or emotional disorders. It is a microsystem of treatment that is both fractal and holographic in nature. The Nogier method is practiced widely in Europe, but relatively unused in the U.S. It is slowly making its way here, mainly through Canada. Acugraph technology is a biomeridian assessment tool that brings modern technology to the field of acupuncture for the first time. Using this tool can truly detect hidden barriers to healing and provide a wealth of customized information about each individual. Above all, it is the aim of “Circle of Friends” to bring the most innovative effective and affordable acupuncture to the Valley. For information on community acupuncture and more, contact Marilyn Brewer at 602-743-2613 or acumar88@cox.net. See ad on page 4.

Kimberly Lauger, RN Helps Special Kids
T
hrough developmental consultations, Kimberly Lauger provides a way to connect with, understand and support the development of special children, providing families hope in difficult times. As a pediatric registered nurse, Lauger’s job involved helping sick children get better; what she loved was supporting their development. Years later, Lauger’s fourth child was born with a complex congenital syndrome (CHARGE) syndrome. With no hearing, little vision and the inability to eat by mouth, there were many obstacles to young Dylan’s developKim with Camila Rose ment. With the help of HANDLE® (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency), Lauger learned to support his development in spite of these obstacles. She says, “As a nurse, I was taught how to support normal growth and development. Becoming a HANDLE practitioner taught me what to do when that development took another path.” One of Lauger’s clients says, ”My 13-month-old, who has vision and hearing loss, was unable to hold her head up unsupported. With the HANDLE approach, in three months she was sitting on my lap, holding up her head and looking around. I am amazed at the change.” Another mom says, “Everything is so much easier now; for the twins and for us parenting them.” Contact Kimberly Lauger, RN, certified HANDLE practitioner and instructor, at 520-907-2842, Kim.Lauger@handle.org or Handle.org. Homeopathy in Arizona
A
rizona is increasingly allowing its citizens to seek alternative healthcare treatment, as the legislature recently passed bills that will advance the practice of the healing art of homeopathy, and enjoys the benefits of several important holistic medical schools. At the American Medical College of Homeopathy (AMCH), the first class of medical students enrolled just this year. Although known in ancient times, homeopathy took its present form in Europe. In America, it became popular about a hundred years ago, and then fell out of popular favor with the rise of the medical/pharmaceutical complex. Today, homeopathy is enjoying a resurgence of interest among the public and doctors. Homeopathy does not easily lend itself to the allopathic (traditional) double-blind placebo controlled research model, but we do know from 200 years of clinical experience that using dilute solutions of various substances, prepared and prescribed properly, can have a stunning, speedy, therapeutic medicinal effect The American Medical College of Homeopathy in Phoenix is the only full-time medical college of homeopathy in the United States, offering doctoral and practitioner programs. Temple of Universality Welcomes All
T
he Temple of Universality spiritualist temple was founded in 1995 by Reverend Betty Tatalajski. She was a teacher of A Course in Miracles in 1979 and a student of the gifted medium, Reverend Robert Ireland. When Ireland was in deep trance, his teacher, Dr. Carlos Blair, instructed Tatalajski to take her Course in MiraReverend cles class to Camp Chesterfield, a Berry Tatalajski well-known spiritualist community in Indiana. There, she was told by Sanat Kumara, the head of the spiritual hierarchy for the planet Earth, that she was to create a temple for a new consciousness, called Universality. The Ascended Masters said Universality was to be based on the universal truth found in all religions; and that she was to study all philosophies and religions, including Roman and Greek gods and goddesses. Under Tatalajski, and with the guidance of Sanat Kumara, Saint Germain and the Ascended Masters, the activities of the Temple of Universality include healing, spiritual art, psychic messages and phenomena, classes and a TV show, Steps Beyond Time. Sunday services are held at 11 a.m. Location: 3590 Country Club Rd., Tucson. For more information call 520-884-5340 or visit TheTempleOfUniversality.org. See ad on page 47.

eal Your Life workshops are based on the bestselling book by Louise Hay, publisher, teacher and author, whose extraordinary life demonstrates the power of the practices taught. If your life is less than perfect in the areas of finances, relationships, health or success, this workshop will teach you ways of thinking and being that will change all that. Your life will get better and better as a result. Hands-on workshops and personal life coaching are available. For people who are struggling with life challenges such as divorce, loss, bankruptcy, the workshops will not only help you through the crisis, but also begin to create the future you want, beginning immediately. Yvonne Shay and Lindsley Silagi are certified, experienced coaches who have both supported people in making positive life changes. Sometime we believe that we aren’t good enough, can’t be loved or we just weren’t meant to be healthy, rich or happy. These beliefs then guide our behavior and we get results that are not what we want. The workshops teach you how to let go of self-sabotaging beliefs and begin believing new, more positive thoughts. Many participants report major life improvements following the workshop, as well as less pain, more joy and amazing demonstrations of prosperity. Heal Your Life Workshops will be offered Jan. 21 and 22 in Truth or Consequences, NM and May 19 and 20, 2012, in Tucson. For more information call 520-909-7607 or email YvonneShay@gmail.com. Natural Healing for Lungs
F
or respiratory ailments and high rates of asthma in the Valley of the Sun, exacerbated by smoggy air, dust and high pollen counts, salt is becoming a popular alternative to treatment with drugs. You don’t have to travel to Israel or Jordan to experience the documented healing properties of salt from the Dead Sea, which is much more saturated with minerals that detoxify the body, stimulate blood circulation and relieve tension and muscle aches. It is naturally antibacterial and antiinflammatory. Salt rooms like Salt Chalet Arizona are making their way to the United States, covered from floor to ceiling with layers of pure salt, imported from the Dead Sea. Clients sit inside the room for a 45-minute session while a fine mist of salt is sprayed into the room. The salt makes its way deep into the lungs, where it kills harmful bacteria, clears mucus buildup and opens air passages. Individuals have found relief from asthma, sinus headaches, allergies, COPD and more. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends Dead Sea salt as an effective treatment for psoriasis. Research has found that its high concentration of magnesium is instrumental in improving skin hydration and reducing inflammation.

Transcend the Merry-Go-Round by Tim Becker
B
ud-Ra-KCri-Da, the living agency for ultimate truth, states: “In seeking or turning towards (and then being), “The Ultimate Answer, (The ultimate purpose for your existence), we must ask the most serious of all questions: “Is there really any everlasting peace or happiness within this life journey? A journey that unarguably dissolves in front of our varied senses and sensibilities? Most, if not nearly all people only experience minute, temporarily refracted dribbles of so-called peace and happiness, but nothing permanent—nothing even close to that which allows one to be with or abide within the “Peace that passeth all understanding. See this! One absolutely must begin to train/turn their attention away from the “merry-go-round of a conditionally (duality) based life (via discriminative, wisdom-laden intelligence) to even begin to commune with highest truth in earnest. “If you all were truly with “Me from the beginning, you wouldn’t have meditated divisive mindsets, political parties, separated nations, separated religions, separated skin colors and

How could you not share that which is the all and all of us/we? Bud-Ra-KCri-Da suggests that this non-cooperative, intolerant, separatively meditated positioning, works counter to the naturally perfect peace and harmony that, “I am‌ you are‌all and all already is.â€? To experience (What other test would suffice?) what Bud-Ra-KCri-Da speaks of requires a mandatory turnabout in consciousness and attention. Mindbased only understanding is simply not “Itâ€? Treating the Human Body as a Whole
by Katka Novakova, MD, ND
T
he human body is an amazing dance of complex synergistic events between billions of cells, where millions of intricate reactions all happen at the same time to ensure the well-being of the whole. At each moment, nutrients are being shuttled into every single cell, while toxins and byproducts of metabolism are being carried out and eliminated. When this multifarious process slows down or gets interrupted, whether by lack of important nutrients, overload of toxins, cellular dehydration, or stress, the development of disease begins. The answer of conventional medicine is often to treat the symptoms of
disease with drugs. However, adding powerful chemical compounds to an already complex system changes the rules, as the body must adjust its functions according to the effects of each drug added. Decrease in symptoms often follows. Unfortunately, this temporary relief occurs at the expense of long-term healing if the underlying cause of illness has not been addressed. On top of that, many drugs deplete essential nutrients and create more toxic burden on the liver, thus deepening the original problem. The naturopathic approach to disease is to treat the human body as a whole. For example, joint pain or
2011-2012
asthma may be related to a sluggish digestive system or food sensitivities, heart disease is often connected with decreased liver metabolism or mineral imbalance, and allergies can be rooted in a deficiency of the adrenal glands. A naturopathic doctor will thoroughly review your medical history and also use blood work as an important diagnostic tool, since low or high normal levels often indicate subtle dysfunctions which do not allow the body to perform at 100 percent. Your naturopathic physician will create an individual plan to target the underlying causes of your “disease, including the support of proper elimination and metabolic functions, as well as supplying much-needed nutrients via supplements, herbs, and/ or IV therapies. If you are one of the many people who struggle to find the right medicine, experience side effects from the drugs you are prescribed, or feel an overall lack of energy, stamina, and sexual function, consider working with a naturopathic physician to help find and treat whatever is keeping you from optimal health. Dr. Katka Novakova is a naturopathic physician and a medical doctor who empowers her patients with new choices and opportunities for personal health. BACKYARD
CHICKENS The People’s Choice for Fresh Healthy Eggs by Lisa Marshall
A
s I work in my home office near Boulder, Colorado, I hear a soft, “Cluck-cluck-cluck,” from outside the window. Soon, it will crescendo into a piercing, “Baaaaaaawk,” as the largest of our seven hens— a plump Rhode Island red named Rojo—drops a warm, beige egg into her hay-filled nesting box. When my daughters, ages 8 and 10, return from school, they’ll tromp through the snow to our A-frame coop, fill their basket with a colorful assortment of bluish-green, brown and lavender eggs (some still warm) and skip off to a neighbor’s house to trade them for piggy bank cash. Such is the life of a backyard chicken farmer.

His monthly local how-toraise-chickens courses currently pack in 50 to 60 people, from tattooed and pierced 20-somethings to retirees. Meanwhile, Rob Ludlow’s BackyardChickens.com, which started in 1999 as a coop-design clearinghouse, now boasts more than 50,000 members, who submit 7,000 posts a day. “We have doubled our production from five years ago, and it just keeps getting better and better,” says spokesman Jeff Smith, of Lebanon, Missouri-based Cackle Hatchery. The 70-year-old chicken hatchery used to cater mostly to farmers wanting large orders of baby chicks for meat or egg operations, and the occasional 4-H club. Now, it ships 140,000 freshly hatched chicks each week to unlikely farmers in urban centers like Seattle, Phoenix, Jersey City and Reno. “There is a little bit of fear out there about the economy, and people are looking at being more self-sufficient,” says Smith. “People are also interested in making sure the birds are being fed right, and not kept in a cage all of their lives.”

Not all are fans of the urban poultry-farming boom. BUILD A BROODER. Baby chicks must be kept in a draft-free place for 60 days. Create an indoor pen, using a galvanized steel tub, a large dog crate or a cardboard box. Cover the bottom with pine shavings or torn paper towels (do not use newspaper, as the ink can harm chicks). Hang a heat lamp out of reach and keep it set at between 90 and 100° F, decreasing it by five degrees weekly. Make sure the brooder is large enough that chicks can move away from the heat if they wish.

BUY HEALTHY CHICKS. Baby chicks can be bought from farm and ranch stores, or ordered online and shipped from commercial hatcheries like CackleHatchery.com. START SMALL AND SKIP THE ROOSTER. Start with 5 to 10 chicks (never buy just one, because they are very social). Choose a hardy breed known to lay regularly, such as Rhode Island reds or Barred Rock hens. Araucanas lay blue-green eggs and silver laced Wyandottes are among the prettiest chickens. Hens do not need a rooster in order to lay eggs. BUILD AN OUTDOOR COOP. Some people use a recycled storage shed; others build their own, using plans available online. Be sure to have two square feet of coop for each chicken, plus an enclosed outdoor run with four square feet per chicken. Note: In high wildlife areas, a lid on the run is essential. ENJOY THE EGGS. Chickens start laying after about six months. One hen will produce from 250 to 330 eggs a year, depending on the breed, before slowing down at about 3 years old and ultimately ceasing to lay. 2011-2012

Different types can combine to resemble the taste, color and texture of wheat flour, for example. Most gluten-free flour blends use rice flour as a base, with potato starch, tapioca flour, corn flour and/or cornstarch added for softness. Other flours, such as buckwheat, chickpea (garbanzo bean), millet and sorghum, can improve flavor, color and texture. Xanthan gum, an additive made from corn, typically provides structure for yeast dough made with gluten-free flour. Eggs, vinegar, sweeteners and applesauce or pumpkin purée soften and round out the flavor of the dough. ACUPRESSURE: Based on the same system as acupuncture, but fingers and hands are used, instead of stimulation with needles, in order to restore the balanced flow of the body’s life energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). This force moves through the body along 12 energy pathways, or meridians, which practitioners unblock and strengthen. Common styles of acupressure include Jin Shin, which gently holds at least two points at once for a minute or more, and Shiatsu, which applies firm pressure to each point for three to five seconds.
ACUPUNCTURE: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of ‘meridians.’ Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life-force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs.

ART THERAPY:
Uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being and to deepen self-awareness. The therapist makes a diagnosis and determines treatment plans by encouraging a client to express his or her feelings and unconscious thoughts through the nonverbal creative process and by observing the forms and content created.
ASTROLOGY: A system of traditions and beliefs that holds that the relative positions of celestial bodies either directly influence life on Earth or correspond to events experienced on a human scale. Modern astrologers define astrology as a symbolic language, art form and type of divination that can provide information about personality and human affairs, aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and predict the future. AYURVEDA: The oldest medical system known to man and a comprehensive spiritual teaching practiced in India for 4,000 years. It focuses on achieving and maintaining perfect health via the balance of the elements air, fire and water (illness is considered an excess of any element). A patient’s body type, determined according to ayurvedic principles, is the basis for individualized dietary regimens and other preventive therapeutic interventions. Ayurvedic prescriptions might include purification procedures for the restoration of biological rhythms; experience of expanded consciousness through meditation; nutritional counseling; stress reduction; enhancing neuromuscular conditions; and behavioral modification.
BEE VENOM THERAPY (BVT): The therapeutic application of honeybee venom, through live bee stings, to bring relief and healing for various spinal, neural, joint or musculoskeletal ailments.
BIOENERGETICS: A psychotherapy that works through the body to engage the emotions. Performing specified postures and exercises causes the release of layers of chronic muscular tension and defensiveness, termed “body armor.” The unlocking of feelings creates the opportunity for understanding and integrating them.
BIOFEEDBACK: A relaxation technique that monitors internal body states and is used especially for stressrelated conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension), with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving, relaxing, etc., they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored.
BODYTALK: Developed by chiropractor/acupuncturist Dr. John Veltheim, BodyTalk is based upon bio-energetic psychology, dynamic systems theory, Chinese medicine and applied kinesiology. By integrating a series of tapping, breathing and focusing techniques, BodyTalk helps the body synchronize and balance its systems and strengthens the body’s innate knowledge of self-repair. BodyTalk is used to address a range of health challenges, including fibromyalgia, infections, parasites, chronic fatigue, allergies, addictions and cellular damage. Practitioners are usually licensed massage therapists (LMT) or bodyworkers.

physical practices of yoga are perhaps the best-known types of bodywork; both have proven successful in relieving tension and stress, promoting blood flow, loosening stiff muscles and stimulating the organs. Massage therapies encompass countless techniques, including Swedish massage, shiatsu and Rolfing. The same is true for yoga. Other types of bodywork include martial arts practices like aikido, ki aikido and Tai chi chuan. Some others are the Alexander technique, Aston patterning, Bowen, Breema bodywork, Feldenkrais method, Hellerwork, polarity therapy, Rosen method, Rubenfeld synergy and Trager. Finding bodywork that improves mental and physical health is a highly individual process. Several types may be combined for the greatest benefit.

A safe, painless, nonsurgical medical procedure that improves metabolic and circulatory function by removing undesirable heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper from the body. A series of intravenous injections of the synthetic amino acid EDTA are administered, usually in an osteopathic or medical doctor’s office. The EDTA blocks excess free radical production, protecting tissues and organs from further damage. Over time, injections may halt the progress of the underlying condition that triggers the development of various degenerative conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. More recently, chelation therapy also has been used to reverse symptoms of atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by removing obstructive plaque built up in the circulatory system.
CHINESE MEDICINE: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest and most complete systems of holistic health care. It
combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise, along with the recognition that wellness in mind, body and emotions depends on the harmonious flow of life-force energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee).
CHIROPRACTIC: Based on the premise that proper structural alignment permits free flow of nerve activity in the body. When spinal vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves radiating from it, potentially leading to diminished function and illness. Misalignment can be caused by physical trauma, poor posture and stress. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment. (Also see Network Chiropractic.)

therapists believe that the vibrations of color waves can directly affect body cells and organs. Thus, different hues can treat illnesses and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. Many practitioners also claim that the body emits an ‘aura,’ or energy field, with colors reflecting a person’s state of health. Color therapists apply colored lights or apply color mentally, through suggestion, to restore the body’s physical and psychic health. Colorpuncture combines the insights of light physics with the knowledge of the meridian points emphasized in Chinese acupuncture. The noninvasive technique is used to clear blockages in the meridians and restore healthy energy flow. Kirlian photographs track improvements. Another related sensory healing technique is light therapy, which attempts to restore well-being and can be successful in treating the depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
COUNSELING/ PSYCHOTHERAPY: These terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who offer advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling tech-
niques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice.
CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY (CST): A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: that the bones of the skull can be manipulated, because they never completely fuse; and that the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect variations in that pulse. CST is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning difficulties, dyslexia and hyperactivity.
CRYSTAL AND GEM THERAPY: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. They also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of ‘laying-on of stones,’ practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow.
DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPY: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/ movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote selfesteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and

physical disabilities. In wide use in the United States, this modality is becoming established around the world.
DECLUTTERING: Based on the theory that clutter drains both physical and mental energy. Decluttering involves two components. The first focuses on releasing things (clothing, papers, furniture, objects and ideas) that no longer serve a good purpose in one’s life. The second focuses on creating a simple system of personal organization that is easy to maintain and guards against accumulating things that are neither necessary or nourishing.
DENTISTRY (HOLISTIC): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. The oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry often incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and often recommending the removal of) silvermercury fillings.
DETOXIFICATION: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing.
DOULA: A woman who supports an expectant mother through pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Studies indicate that support in labor has profound benefits, including shorter labor, less desire for pain medication, lower rate of Caesarian delivery and more ease in initiation of breast feeding. Fathers have reported that they were more relaxed with a doula present because they felt reassured, and therefore freer to support their mates.
EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (EFT): A self-help procedure founded by Gary Craig that combines fingertip tapping of key acupuncture meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue or health challenge. Unresolved, or ‘stuck,’ negative emotions, caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system, are seen as major contributors to most physical pains and diseases. These can remain stagnant and trapped until released by the tapping. EFT is easy to memorize and portable, so it can be done anywhere.
ENERGY FIELD WORK: The art and practice of realigning and re-attuning the body between the physical and the etheric and auric fields to assist in natural healing processes. Working directly with the energy field in and around the body, the practitioner channels and directs energy into the cells, tissues and organs of the patient’s body to effect healing on physical and nonphysical levels simultaneously. Sessions may or may not involve the physical laying on of hands.
ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE: Explores the role of dietary and environmental allergens in health and illness. Factors such as dust, mold, chemicals and certain foods may cause allergic reactions that can dramatically influence diseases, ranging from asthma and hay fever to headaches and depression.
ENZYME THERAPY: Can be an important first step in restoring health and well-being by helping to remedy digestive problems. Plant and pancreatic enzymes are used in complementary ways to improve digestion and absorption of essential nutrients. Treatment includes enzyme supplements, coupled with a healthy diet that features whole foods.

FELDENKRAIS® METHOD: Helps students straighten out what founder Moshe Feldenkrais calls, “kinks in the brain.” Kinks are learned movement patterns that no longer serve a constructive purpose. They may have been adopted to compensate for a physical injury or to accommodate individuality in the social world. Students unlearn unworkable movements and discover better, personalized ways to move, using mind-body principles of slowed action, breathing, awareness and thinking about their feelings.
FENG SHUI: The ancient Chinese system of arranging manmade spaces and elements to create or facilitate harmonious qi or chi (pronounced “chee”), or energy flow, by tempering or enhancing the energy where necessary. Feng shui consultants can be an asset to both personal and business spaces, either before or after the spaces are created.
FLOWER REMEDIES: Flower essences are recognized for their ability to improve well-being by eliminating negative emotions. In the 1930s, English physician Edward Bach concluded that negative emotions could lead to physical illness. His research also convinced him that flowers possessed healing properties that could be used to treat emotional problems. In the 1970s, Richard Katz completed Bach’s work and established the Flower Essence Society, which has registered some 100 essences from flowers in more than 50 countries.
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE: A personalized medicine that focuses on primary prevention and deals with underlying causes, instead of symptoms, for serious chronic diseases. Treatments are grounded in nutrition and improved
lifestyle habits and may make use of medications. The discipline uses a holistic approach to analyze and treat interdependent systems of the body and to create the dynamic balance integral to good health.
GUIDED IMAGERY AND CREATIVE VISUALIZATION: Uses positive thoughts, images and symbols to focus the mind on the workings of the body to accomplish a particular goal, desired outcome or physiological change, such as pain relief or healing of disease. This flow of thought can take many forms and involve, through the imagination, all the physical senses. Imagination is an important element of the visualization process; it helps create a mental picture of what is desired in order to transform life circumstances.

HEALING TOUCH: A noninvasive, relaxing and nurturing energy therapy that helps to restore physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance and support self-healing. A gentle touch is used on or near the fully-clothed client to influence the body’s inner energy centers and exterior energy fields. Healing touch is used to ease acute and chronic conditions, assist with pain management, encourage deep relaxation and accelerate wound healing.
HERBAL MEDICINE: This oldest form of medicine uses natural plants in a wide variety of forms for their therapeutic value. Herbs produce and contain various chemical substances that act upon the body to strengthen its natural functions without the negative side effects of synthetic drugs. They may be taken internally or applied externally via teas, tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments, compresses and poultices.
HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK: A selfexploration technique that combines breathing, evocative music and a specific form of bodywork to integrate one’s physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions. At workshops run by facilitators, participants try to access the four “levels” of experience that are available during breathing: sensory, biographical, perinatal and transpersonal. By accessing buried memories, individuals can relive their birth experience or traumatic life events, free up ‘stuck’ emotional viewpoints or experience a mystical state of awareness, such as connecting with the Universe.

HOMEOPATHY: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar,” and pathos, meaning “suffering,” employs the concept that “like cures like.” A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing.
HYDROTHERAPY: The use of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full-body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used at home as part of a self-care program. HYPNOTHERAPY: A range of hypnosis techniques that allow practitioners to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious. The altered state that occurs under hypnosis has been compared to a state of deep meditation or transcendence, in which the innate recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely. The subject can achieve greater clarity regarding his or her own wants and needs, explore other events or periods of life that require resolution, or generally develop a more positive attitude. Often used to help people lose weight or stop smoking, it is also used in the treatment of phobias, stress and as an adjunct to the treatment of illnesses.

INTUITIVE ARTS: A general term for various methods of divination, such as numerology, psychic reading, and tarot reading. Individuals may consult practitioners to seek information about the future or insights into personal concerns or their personality. Numerology emphasizes the significance of numbers derived from the spelling of names, birth dates and other significant references; psychics may claim various abilities, from finding lost objects and persons to communicating with the spirits of the dead; tarot readers interpret a deck of cards containing archetypal symbols.
IRIDOLOGY: Analysis of the delicate structure of the iris, the colored portion of the eye, to reveal information about conditions within the body. More than 90 specific zones on each iris, for a combined total of 180-plus zones, correspond to specific areas of the body. Because body weaknesses are often noticeable in the iris long before they are discernible through blood work or other laboratory analysis, iridology can be a useful tool for preventive self-care.
JIN SHIN (OR JIN SHIN JYUTSU): A gentle, non-invasive energy-balancing art and philosophy that embodies a life of simplicity, calmness, patience and self-containment. Practitioners employ simple acupressure techniques, using
their fingers and hands on a fullyclothed client to help eliminate stress, create emotional equilibrium, relieve pain and alleviate acute or chronic conditions.
KINESIOLOGY/ APPLIED KINESIOLOGY: The study of muscles and their movement. Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to identify decreased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. Some tests use acupuncture meridians and others analyze interrelationships among muscles, organs, the brain and the body’s energy field. Applied kinesiology is also used to check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered.
MACROBIOTICS: An Eastern philosophy best known in the West for its dietary principles. Macrobiotic theory posits that there is a natural order to all things. By synchronizing our eating habits with the cycles of

MAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY: Electromagnetic energy and the human body have a vital and valid interrelationship, making it possible to use magnetic field therapy as an aid in diagnosing and treating physical and emotional disorders. This process is reported to relieve symptoms and may, in some cases, retard the cycle of new diseases. Magnets and electromagnetic therapy devices are now being used to eliminate pain, facilitate the healing of broken bones and counter the effects of stress.
MASSAGE THERAPY: A general term for the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. Massage therapy incorporates various disciplines and involves kneading, rubbing, brushing and tapping the muscles and connective tissues by hand or using mechanical devices. Its goal is to increase circulation and detoxification, in order to reduce physical and emotional stress and increase overall wellness. MEDITATION: The intentional directing of attention to one’s inner self. Methods and practices to achieve a meditative state are based upon various principles using the body or mind and may employ control or letting-go mechanisms. Techniques include the use of imagery, mantras and observation, and the control of breathing. Research has shown that regular meditation can contribute to psychological and physiological well-being. As a spiritual practice, meditation is used to facilitate a mystical sense of oneness with a higher power or the Universe. It can also help reduce stress and alleviate stress-related ailments, such as anxiety and high blood pressure.

OSTEOPATHY/ OSTEOPATHIC PHYSICIANS: Osteopathy uses generally accepted physical, pharmacological and surgical methods of diagnosis and therapy, with a strong emphasis on body mechanics and manipulative methods to detect and correct faulty structure and function, in order to restore the body’s natural healing capacities. Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) are fully trained and licensed according to the same standards as medical doctors (M.D.) and receive additional extensive training in the body’s structure and functions.
OXYGEN THERAPIES: Alters the body’s chemistry to help overcome disease, promote repair and improve overall function. Properly applied, oxygen may be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including infections, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, allergies, cancer and multiple sclerosis. The major types of oxygen therapy used to treat illness are hyperbaric oxygen and ozone. Hydrogen peroxide therapy (oral or intravenous) can be dangerous and should be avoided.
PAST LIFE REGRESSION: Past life and regression therapies operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional challenges are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, either childhood traumas or experiences in previous lifetimes. The practitioner uses hypnosis or other altered states of consciousness and relaxation techniques to access the source of this “unfinished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives.

ity, the more sweet foods they eat, the more they will tend to want. If a parent wants to offer a sweet snack, include some additional fiber, protein or healthy fat to balance it, because these nutrients act as a time-release mechanism for sugars and will help to regulate a more natural appetite rhythm. According to the ADA’s Pediatric Manual of Clinical Dietetics, vegetarian children tend to be leaner than their non-vegetarian peers; it doesn’t mean that simply eliminating meat is a recipe for obesity prevention. According to the ADA, a varied and appropriately planned vegetarian diet can meet all of a growing baby and toddler’s nutritional needs. But it is even more crucial to keep the blood sugar levels balanced in vegetarian toddlers, because they aren’t receiving proteins from animal sources. On the plus side, young vegetarians are more likely to eat a broader range of fiber and micronutrient-rich fruits, veggies and beans. To encourage reluctant youngsters to eat more vegetables, try roasting them, especially green produce and root veggies. Also serve a new vegetable in a way similar to one that they already like; e.g., baking homemade sweet potato fries cut in familiar shapes. Kid-size veggies like minibroccoli trees or baby carrots have appeal. Dressing up plain veggies with dips and shakers of a mild herb, spice, Parmesan cheese, ground seeds or wheat germ adds to the fun.
Finally, encourage toddlers to help out in the kitchen by asking them to wash and sort the veggies or arrange them in a pretty way on the platter. If children are involved in preparing foods, they are more likely to eat them. Jeannette Lee Bessinger, an award-winning lifestyle and nutrition educator, and Tracee Yablon Brenner, a registered dietitian, founded RealFoodMoms.com. These certified health counselors have co-authored two practical guides for families: Great Expectations: Best Food for Your Baby and Toddler and Simple Food for Busy Families.
Protective Food Practices 80 percent rule: Don’t worry too much about what your child is eating outside the home. Make the connection: Help a child understand the relationship between our food supply and the natural world. Visit an organic farm or help young ones start a garden. The pristine pantry: Put the child in charge of what foods they actually eat at a meal while parents stay in charge of the foods available. Keep unhealthy foods out of the house.

Success IS Where the Heart IS by Mega R. Mease
H
eart IS the central vital part, the real meaning, the essence, the core. Seeking, finding and accessing the “Heart” of the matter are essential to the enhancement and success of any endeavor. It is a solid truth in career and the only valid pathway to simplicity, honor and integrity in the arena of business. Heart-based equations for success include an equal marriage of vision, feeling, thought and action. This powerful combination provides personalized instruction to redesign your life one moment, one breath, one step at a time. Usage of these four components together encourages the enhancement of one focused area, while allowing other areas to grow simultaneously. Thus, one area of life need not suffer while another is learning to thrive. The non-traditional wisdom of the Heart easily guides an individual to connect with their natural gifts and build upon that skill set to support peak performance. The result is a perfect balance of heart, head and hand that creates fulfillment, happiness and success on many levels. In comparison, the average linear equation for success offers a play-by-play map of details designed to get from point A to point B within an established time frame. Traveling this route can definitely get one to their desired destination, but there 50

may be a high price for the ride. This frequently used roadway may include 70-hour workweeks, sleepless nights and minimal time for family, friends and pleasure. Temporary financial lack, unmanageable anxiety and damaging stress are often prevalent when choosing this conventional path. As one gets closer to achieving a goal, the absence of Heart may promote fatigue, a compromised immune system, loss of passion, frustration and a lessened sense of accomplishment. The desire for further improvement diminishes, causing lower levels of creativity, decreased momentum, boredom and eventually, even failure. This comparison clearly indicates that the most efficient and enjoyable way to enhance career and gain success is to seek, find and access the “Heart” of the matter. Please don’t stop at career, as this formula works for health, relationship and life in general. When access to Heart is achieved, all the benefits of the conventional linear equation will be present, without any of the adverse side effects. It is a winwin, best of both worlds scenario. The challenge is getting started, staying focused and recognizing the target when you actually find it. Humor is the quality that breathes life into every situation, so wrap yourself in it as you begin your 2011-2012
travels on the road to seeking Heart. Seeking begins with willingness, desire and determination to be and do. Even the most sincere intention to seek, however, may fall short. To be truly successful, seeking must be accompanied by the ability to see with wonder and beyond what appears to be impossible in the now. It is this vision that allows us to marvel at life and invite the unknown, unexpected pleasures of success and life into reality. A strong commitment is necessary to accomplish what you seek. You must make a pledge, a promise that melds you to your purpose of mindfully listening and tenaciously following Heart-based directions once you find them. It is this rare form of 100 percent commitment that opens up and secures the energetic pathways to your natural flow of being. Some may refer to this as “being in the zone.” This is the place where answers to the unconscious, unasked questions live. Ask yourself—What am I doing? Why am I doing it? Is this helping to achieve my goal? What am I willing to change to accomplish this? When you arrive at the home of the “Heart of the Matter,” you will find yourself surrounded by acknowledgement of truth, deeper awareness, and pureness of integrity. You will feel forgiveness of self, honesty and appreciation. The answers will be soft and come with ease. Seek, find and access. The result is that your desired enhanced and successful future is now your present-day reality. Mega R. Mease is the founder of the Center for Advanced Energy Therapeutics, in Tucson. She is an energy diagnostic, vibrational healer and empowerment facilitator and creator of HeartRay Energetic Therapy and Bone Energy Re-patterning modalities. manage pain and provide relief. Some of the most common include the following approaches.

PAIN-FREE
PETS NATURAL WAYS TO PROVIDE RELIEF by Dr. Matthew J. Heller
P
roviding pain relief for pets is important, whether they are recovering from an injury or surgery or suffering from a chronic problem. But recognizing signs of pain in animals is tricky because it’s subjective and its expression varies with each animal. Some pets are stoic when faced with horrible injuries, while others howl over minor ailments. Humans complain, grumble and often self-medicate to alleviate their aches. A pet may need help and be communicating, “I hurt!” if any of the following signs are evident.
Refusing to walk stairs or not rising quickly when called Avoiding physical contact, such as being lifted or carried Whining, whimpering, howling or meowing constantly Biting or continually licking a particular part of the body Flattening ears against the head Loss of appetite
Being unusually withdrawn, inactive, restless or exceptionally clingy
Changes in behavior may be the only way a cat or dog will communicate its plea for relief from pain. Keep in mind that in nature, predators seek out animals that display signs of pain or injury as a preferred target, so it’s natural to hide pain as a protective measure. In the event of a trauma, illness or surgery, seek diagnosis and assistance from a trusted integrative veterinarian. Mounting evidence from institutions such as the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture supports the use of alternative modalities to effectively

Nutraceuticals These non-drug nutrients play a significant role in strengthening normal body tissues, repairing damaged tissues and improving efficient body metabolism. Pet guardians may use vet-recommended nutraceuticals for up to six to eight weeks to manage low levels of pain.
Homeopathic Remedies Homeopathic remedies, sometimes referred to as homotoxicology, comprise the use of plant and animal materials to stimulate the body into action; homeopathy is often explained as, “Like heals like.” Specifically, exposure to a large amount of a toxin (e.g., poison ivy or arsenic or anthrax) would likely cause specific physical problems, but in a small, controlled dose, it may stimulate the body to heal similar problems. We regularly apply Traumeel, manufactured by Heel, a blend of 12 homeopathic remedies for temporary relief of minor aches and pains associated with bruises, sprains and injuries such as dislocations, fractures and trauma. It can also ease pain associated with inflammation and arthritis. Forms include dissolvable tablets, ointments and drops.
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a holistic approach that considers each being as a whole—body, mind and spirit—and takes into account both diet and environment. For the practitioner, disease is the result of an imbalance of the body’s energy flow, which needs to be redirected, rebalanced and restored. Herbal formulas are prepared for pets suffering from musculoskeletal injuries due to an acute trauma, like a sprain or back injury, or a chronic discomfort, such as arthritis. They are available in capsules, powders and tea pills. In medical terms, acupuncture
In decades past, veterinarians were taught that some feeling of pain could help an injured or post-operative pet to stay quiet enough, long enough to heal. More recent studies, to the contrary, show that minimizing any pain generally aids the recovery process. Primary source: Purina Pet Institute
can assist the body to heal itself by effecting certain physiological changes, such as increasing blood circulation and relieving muscle spasms. General conditions treated by acupuncture include arthritis; back pain; muscle pain and spasms; and stroke. A simple acute problem like a sprain may require only one treatment, where more severe or chronic ailments may require multiple sessions.
Animal Chiropractic Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy, also referred to as animal chiropractic, is applied to correct common misalignments in the spine, restoring motion to the spine, as well as proper nerve and muscle function. Misalignment may be caused by trauma, overexertion or the normal wear and tear of everyday life. Proper adjustment allows the body to fully function and better heal itself. The number of adjustments required to alleviate pain varies based on the severity of the disease or injury. Pain management requires a team effort, but the result—a pain-free pet that feels happier and healthier—is worth it. Dr. Matthew J. patterns. Gradually, the brain learns and remembers how to exhibit only the good patterns.
REBIRTHING BREATHWORK: Also known as conscious connected breathing, or vivation. Rebirthing is a means to access and release unresolved emotions. The technique uses conscious, steady, rhythmic breathing, without pausing between inhaling and exhaling. Guided by a professional rebirther, clients re-experience past memories, including birth, and let go of emotional tension stored in the body.
RECONNECTIVE HEALING™: Uses light and dimensional frequencies that work on all levels of the body/mind to reduce stress, foster relaxation and raise the body’s healing vibration. The idea of Reconnective Healing is to reconnect the meridian or acupuncture lines on the body that have become disconnected from the larger, universal grid of meridian lines.
REGRESSION THERAPIES: Operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional problems are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, such as childhood traumas. The practitioner uses hypnosis, or other altered states of consciousness, and relaxation techniques to access the source of “unfinished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives.
REFLEXOLOGY: A natural healing art based upon the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands increases circulation and promotes specifically designated bodily and muscular functions.
REIKI: Means “universal life-force energy.” A method of activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies to organs and glands or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). Various techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others for whom the use of touch is essential and appropriate. to restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, the range and freedom of physical and emotional expression increases. Rolfing can help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture and restore flexibility.
SHAMANISM: An ancient healing tradition which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition can be both self-empowering and self-healing.
SHIATSU: The most widely known form of acupressure, Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning finger pressure. The technique applies varying degrees of pressure to balance the life energy that flows through specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. Used to release tension and strengthen weak areas in order to facilitate even circulation, cleanse cells and improve the function of vital organs. Shiatsu may be used to help diagnose, prevent and relieve many chronic and acute conditions that manifest on both physical and emotional levels.
SOUND HEALING: Employs vocal and instrumental tones, generated internally or externally. When sounds are produced with healing intent, they can create sympathetic resonance in the physical and energy bodies. Sound healing also is used to bring discordant energy into balance and harmony.
SPIRITUAL HEALING/ COUNSELING: Practiced in two forms. In one, the healer uses thought or touch to align his or her spiritual essence with that of the client. The healer works to either balance the spiritual field or shift the perceptual base of the client to create harmony between mind and body and draw the client into the active presence of Divine Spirit. In the other, the healer transforms healing energy into a vibrational frequency that the client can receive and comfortably assimilate, reminding the person’s intuitive core of its inherent healing ability.
TANTRA: Has emerged as a modern spiritual path of embodied consciousness, with roots in ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Tantra views the ‘spiritual’ as being directly present within the ‘physical’ and respects sensory experience as a vehicle for accessing higher states of awareness. Tantric practices balance the chakras (energy centers) and can contribute to a sense of presence, intimacy and fulfillment in all aspects of living. 2011-2012

TANTRA TAI CHI: A recently
developed practice of Tai chi/qigongstyle body movements designed to be performed with a partner. It can enhance intimacy by sequentially and simultaneously focusing attention on the root, or sexual center, near the base of the spine, the heart or love center in the mid-chest region and the upper spiritual center in the head. The cycling of energy through these chakra centers encourages a blended experience of intimate presence with one’s own internal being and one’s partner.
THE RESULTS SYSTEM: A non-intrusive system using kinesiology (biofeedback via muscle testing) to identify and release body stressors at a cellular level, allowing the body to operate at the highest levels of efficiency possible. It may have a positive affect on conditions such as chemical imbalance, learning disorders, attention deficit disorders and alcoholism. THERMOGRAPHY (THERMAL IMAGING): A
diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of inflammation and abnormal tissue growth. Inflammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges.
TRAGER APPROACH (PSYCHOPHYSICAL INTEGRATION): A system
of movement re-education that seeks to address the mental roots of muscle tension. By gently rocking, cradling and moving the client’s fully clothed body, the practitioner encourages him or her to see that physically restrictive patterns can be changed. The Trager approach includes “mentastics,” simple, active, self-induced movements that can be done by the client during regular daily activities. Trager work has been successfully applied to a variety of neuromuscular disorders, and to the stresses and discomforts of everyday living.

How To Work With Crystals by Charles McAlpine
I
f you feel drawn to the beauty of crystals and stones and would like to include them in your “spiritual toolkit, here are some of the most popular ways to connect with these unique gifts of nature.
Pocket stones or wearing jewelry. People have been connecting and working with crystals for centuries. Every time you wear a piece of crystal or gemstone jewelry or you carry a crystal with you, it is in your energetic field or aura. Its properties begin to permeate throughout your body and your personal energy field.
Hand-held during prayer or meditation. Hold the crystal during your prayer or meditation and allow its properties to infuse your energetic bodies to deepen or expand the experience. Depending upon the unique properties of the crystal and your daily activities, its effects may stay with you all day.
in this area, they are immersed in its energetic field.
Creating grids, or assembling a collection of crystals. People create grids or families of crystals intentionally while others are unaware they are doing it. The synergy of the energies they create may feel completely different than any of them on their own, and if intended, amplify the intensity of this energy.

by energy workers in their sessions to deepen the healing experience or infuse the energetic field with needed energies or properties. The main thing to keep in mind as you think about working with crystals is that your own intuition, imagination and intentions are the most important ingredient. YOGA: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join,” and refers to the joining of man’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. The goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including physical exercises called asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and diet and nutrition. Although yoga is not meant to cure specific diseases or ailments directly, it has been found effective in treating many physical ailments.
YOGA THERAPY: The application of yoga principles, methods and techniques to empower individuals to progress towards greater health and freedom from disease, representing a first effort to integrate traditional yogic concepts and techniques with Western medical and psychological knowledge. Yoga therapy aims at the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions, ranging from emotional distress to back problems. HONORING OUR
LIFE FORCE ENERGY MEDICINE HELPS RESTORE BALANCE AND HARMONY by Linda Sechrist
I
n William James’ famous hypothesis, “A new idea is first condemned as ridiculous, and then dismissed as trivial, until finally, it becomes what everybody knows.” In the field of energy medicine, the experiences of pioneers such as medical intuitives Caroline Myss and Donna Eden, natural healer Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat and Doctor of Chiropractic Eric Pearl validate James’ postulate. Initially disregarded by allopathic medicine, the energy medicine these healers practice operates on the belief that changes in the “life force” of the body can affect human health and healing. They maintain that applying this energetic perspective allows them to clinically assess and treat what they refer to as the body’s electromagnetic natural awakenings 68
fields, in order to achieve a healthy balance in the body’s overall energy system. The modality has to do with energy pathways, or meridians, that run through our organs and muscles. The idea is to uncover the root causes of imbalances and harmonize them at an energetic level before they completely solidify in the physical body and manifest as an illness. Such imbalances may be brought on by, for example, such things as emotional stress and physical trauma.
Aid to Conventional Treatment As recently as 1990, the idea of using any form of energy medicine, such as 2011-2012
acupuncture, Reiki, Touch for Health or the services of a medical intuitive in a hospital setting would have been considered preposterous. Today, however, more medical institutions are combining these types of treatment with traditional allopathic medicine. For example, Children’s Memorial Hospital, in Chicago, a research-oriented emblem of Western medicine, now employs a Healing Touch therapist. The hospital, which perennially ranks among America’s premier hospitals, is the principal pediatric teaching hospital for Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a leading U.S. cardiovascular surgeon, was the first to include a Reiki practitioner in his department at Columbia University Medical Center, in New York City. The New York Times reports that Oz allows the use of Reiki during openheart surgeries and heart transplant operations.
More Insight Medical intuitives say they can recognize problems in the flow of the body’s energies and are able to accurately predict the kinds of physical problems that are likely to emerge before any symptoms are detected. Eden, who has had a lifelong ability to make health assessments that are confirmed by medical tests, can look at an individual’s body and see and feel where the energies are not flowing, out of balance or not in harmony, then works to correct the problem. “I was 22 before I discovered that everyone didn’t make their decisions after first seeing and sensing energy,” says Eden. Carolle Jean-Murat, a California licensed obstetrician and gynecologist who now practices as a medical intuitive and healer, left her 30-year allopathic practice to focus on natural healing. Today, the native of Haiti specializes in helping women restore their mental, physical and spiritual health. “I am a healer who has the capacity to see, feel and hear whatever a client is going through, because I see them as a whole: energy, body, mind, soul and emotions,” says Jean-Murat.
Dr. Eric Pearl, author of The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself, demystifies the healing process. He teaches others (75,000 and counting) how to activate and use what he refers to as an all-inclusive spectrum of healing frequencies. “Reconnection teaches people how to transcend the ego and its judgment, and reach a state of nonjudgment observation,” explains Pearl. “Many of them describe their experience simply as an internal activation of an advanced level of consciousness, in which awareness allows the perception of a multi-dimensional universe.” Pearl posits that as part of our growth as human beings, “We not only discover that we have become more, we understand that we can’t stand in fear, lack and limitation, and we can only offer ourselves as a vessel for healing for ourselves and others when we reside in oneness and love.” Pearl believes that it is part of everyone’s life journey to discover that they are an empty vessel, born to be filled with Spirit. By letting go of beliefs that block our ability to deeply understand this, we can harmonically converge with the lives of others at the level where we are all energy, as physics indicates. These practitioners agree that, while we all have some subtle sense of an animating force within us that is pure energy, we often ignore it. We go about our daily lives using this life force to perform our activities until it becomes depleted and illness manifests in a physical or emotional imbalance. While professional energy medicine practitioners are specifically trained to sense and honor the body’s animating life force and recognize its excesses and deficiencies, they also believe that we can all learn how to work with this important facet of our being. It is our birthright to realize balance and harmony, and we can do this by learning to re-establish a healthy flow of communication within the body’s subtle energy system.
