Tucson Moves a Million Miles gives Tucsonans a place to log progress toward their personal fitness goals and add them to our citywide total. So far, Tucsonans have moved well over a million miles. My website, MayorRothschild.com, also has information on various locations to walk or run, and groups to walk or run with. You don’t have to go it alone.
Last year, we held a Tucson Fitness Month in May, where the Jewish Community Center, Tucson Fire Department, Tucson Parks and Recreation and the YMCA offered free fitness classes to the public. Every year we pick a date in November to hold K-6 Fitness Day. This year, more than 25,000 students participated. I dropped in on the students at Holladay Elementary School, who showed me how they keep active using dance with a “Green Eggs and Ham” routine from Seussical Jr. I did my best to keep up. Being physically active is part of maintaining good health. The other part is eating right. I created the Commission on Food Security, Heritage and Economy to address a number of issues, including food deserts, heritage agriculture, community gardens and our overall food economy from farm to table. There are many resources in our community for those interested in healthy eating. For example, our Community Food Bank works with importers in Nogales to take produce that would otherwise go to waste and make it available to the public and to organizations that feed low-income residents. The Food Bank also has programs on backyard and community gardens—a great way to get high-quality produce into your diet. I encourage every Tucsonan to keep working on healthy habits. Soon, you won’t even have to think about it. It’ll just be second nature.

Regina Lord believes that through art and the creative process, one’s outlook can change and become more positive—more open. As an artist, she looks for beauty and inspiration in the Southwestern mountains, the desert, nature, wildlife, the city streets and the people. Her style is the unraveling of a woven mixture of her Hispanic heritage, deep-rooted love for folk art and enchantment with magical whimsicality. Working in mostly acrylics and using the boldest colors, she pulls ideas together in the best way that makes her heart sing—always bright, always colorful and always pure of heart. Lord was born and raised in northern Arizona and has lived in the state for most of her life. She had an interest in art from a young age, and continued exploring her creativity while studying to become a registered nurse, as well as while working as a nurse for 13 years. with the electricity that is coursing through our bodies, creating connections that may help harmonize, balance and stimulate our energy centers, otherwise known as “chakras”. It is a good idea to cleanse the energies gathered by crystals and stones both before use or wearing, as well as regularly, to help avoid losing or breaking them. Cleansing and purification can be done simply by placing the stone in a container filled with non-iodized sea salt. A glass or ceramic container should be used—never plastic or metal, as those materials can carry a frequency that introduces static and interference. Chiropractic Treatments’ Effects on Brain Function
N
ew research shows that spinal adjustments affect more than spinal nerves, and people may now consider chiropractic for conditions they would not have associated with benefiting from physical adjustments. There may be help for those who thought they had nowhere else to turn for their health concerns. New research shows that adjustments of the neck not only help joints that are not functioning properly, but also provide an effect on the motor cortex of the brain. This study suggests that through changes in the cerebellum caused by the adjustment, there is resultant motor learning and increased function. Other studies show that adjustments create functional changes in regions of the brain that are measureable and reproducible. The areas of the brain stimulated by chiropractic adjustments affect emotions, learning, motivation, memory, consciousness, homeostasis, perception, motor control, self-awareness, cognitive function, voluntary movements, decision making, touch, temperature, pain of the skin and the cardiovascular system. o promote recovery from pain and injury, as well as maintain balance in the body for optimal health, modalities such as whole body cryotherapy, dry needling, cupping therapy, kinesiology taping and cold laser therapy can all be beneficial. Whole body cryotherapy can enhance performance and recovery, improve mood and energy, boost metabolism, and aid in rehabilitation, anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. Cold laser therapy assists in cellular repair by penetrating deeply into the tissue and restoring cell function. Effects include improved cellular metabolism, tissue healing and circulation. Dry needling is an effective treatment for injury and injury prevention. By stimulating blood flow and tissue repair, it promotes and speeds up the healing process, decreasing recovery time and pain from injury or sore muscles. Cupping therapy helps treat soft tissue injuries, promoting healing by enhancing blood flow. The suction of the cups mobilizes blood flow to promote the healing of a broad range of medical ailments. Kinesiology taping is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints, without restricting range of motion. It is used successfully to treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. Dr. Kate Warren is the owner and head physical therapist of Evolve Physical Therapy & Sports Performance, the only location offering whole body cryotherapy in the Tucson area, in addition to the other modalities mentioned. ental problems and issues in relationships are often caused by blockages in our unconscious mind. Releasing these blocks requires special attention to the unconscious. For example, when we use techniques to remember and interpret our dreams, we often find symbols that contain the solutions caused by our conscious ego choices. Another way to awaken the unconscious is with Family Constellations, a method that not only activates the unconscious, but also settles unfinished emotional issues in the family. We all inherit gifts as well as “gaps” from our family blood lines. Genetic gifts for the body and mind are well-known. It is our birthright to deserve support, encouragement and nurturing of these gifts—such as creative talents in the arts, athletics, academics and more. We eventually become responsible to develop these talents; ultimately, we must follow the callings of our soul. Dreams and Family Constellations provide solutions because they arise from a deep part of us connected to the “Knowing Field”. This is a shamanic energy field that exists in the collective unconscious mind of our family and of culture in general. It expands our awareness well beyond what we could know on our own. John Dore’s “Learning from Your Soul” meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday evening of each month, at Unity Church on Camino Blanco. Natural Awakenings Advanced Healing Skin Cream is a wonderful product. The skin cream goes on smooth and absorbs into the skin quickly - it is not “greasy”. I have been plagued with dry skin around my ears, belly button and scalp for over 20 years and this product
has healed those areas in just 3 days of use. The Manuka Honey that is in this product, I was told repairs damaged skin - now I am a believer!!! I continue to use this skin cream to keep my skin soft. I have to mention the product has a wonderful aroma, like peppermint, and when applying the cream one can feel a slight warming sensation and I know it is working into the pores to do it’s work! Glad I tried this product! ~ Jim

What Is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is gathered in the wild back country of New Zealand from the native Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). The bees don’t use the pollen from a variety of other flowers or plants, so the content of the honey is very consistent. A 2013 study in the European Journal of Medical Research used Active Manuka Honey under dressings on postoperative wounds for an 85 percent success rate in clearing up infections, compared with 50 percent for normal antibiotic creams.

No-Choice Vaccines
California Mandates Shots for Childcare Workers After passing the state House and Senate, California Senate Bill 792 was approved by Governor Jerry Brown on October 11. The unprecedented law mandates vaccines for adult childcare workers and volunteers, including all individuals working in private and public school early childhood education programs, with no religious exemptions permitted. SB 792 reads, “Commencing September 1, 2016, a person shall not be employed or volunteer at a day care center if he or she has not been immunized against influenza, pertussis [whooping cough] and measles. Each employee and volunteer shall receive an influenza vaccination between August 1 and December 1 of each year.” The same regulations also apply to family home day care workers and volunteers. s the “lightest” of all minerals, lithium is one of the most misunderstood trace minerals and brain nutrients of our time. We’ve known for years that animals need lithium nutritionally, and when fed low-lithium diets have higher mortalities, as well as reproductive and behavioral abnormalities. A 1992 study by Dr. Gerhard Schrauzer found that individuals with heart disease, learning disabilities and incarcerated violent criminals had very low lithium levels, as measured through hair sample analysis. We also know that lower lithium intakes from water supplies are associated with increased rates of suicides, homicides and arrest rates for drug use and other crimes. In children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, lithium is often low, and when small doses of lithium are given with other nutrients (e.g. magnesium, zinc), symptoms frequently improve. According to integrative psychiatrist Dr. James Greenblatt, M.D., in a recent talk titled, “The Top 5 Minerals for Cognition, Memory and Mood”, he states, “Clinical research supports a crucial link between mineral status and mental health. Zinc, magnesium and trace minerals such as lithium play indispensable roles in hundreds of biochemical reactions in the brain. These elements regulate emotions, thoughts, mood, sleep and behavior by modulating neurotransmitters.” Greenblatt refers to lithium as a “naturally occurring, nootropic mineral”, which is any food, substance or nutrient that increases intelligence, memory and learning. In short, according to Greenblatt, “low-dose lithium works as a multifaceted tool in integrative health, offering beneficial effects on mood and behavior, as well as memory and cognition.” Given that nutrient depletion is on the rise, and fluoride can bind to and decrease the bioavailability of lithium in both plants and animals, what are the implications of this on our health, and for the population at large? Simply put, there are many. As a protective shield against environmental toxins, coupled with its ability to enhance healing processes in the brain and body, most of us would benefit from a little extra dose of this brain-boosting, healing nutrient. our Tucson artists’ plein air— painted outdoors—paintings were selected by Mayor Jonathon Rothschild to display in the Mayor’s Gallery, on the tenth floor of City Hall, for the current Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) exhibit. Now in its sixth year, the Mayor’s Gallery spotlights established and new artists. Artists Jean Beck, Eric Jabloner, Janice MacKenzie and Lowell Richardson each have several paintings on display celebrating the Sonoran outdoors. The mayor chose images that reflect the historic, cultural and floral qualities of the city. “In a city that averages more than 300 days of sun a year, we thought it fitting to feature works painted outdoors, in the sunshine, for this show,” Rothschild said in the TPAC press release. “We appreciate how these Tucson
artists have used the unique light of Tucson to inspire their work, and continue to inspire others through their art.” En plein air artists are plentiful under the Southern Arizona sky. The desert sun produces stark shadow and brilliant light offering images ripe for the artistic eye to interpret. The French term translated as “open (in full) air” has come to be used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The painter reproduces the actual visual conditions seen at the time of the painting, in contrast with studio painting or by academic rules that create a predetermined look. In his artist statement, Jabloner asks, “Can a painting prompt a viewer to create a narrative? Can a painting induce memories or rouse taste, smell and emotions?” The answer is yes in the context of en plein air painting. “My paintings, figurative, architectural, still life or spiritual, are narratives. My hope is that they capture the viewer by formulating their own narratives persuaded by their memories, senses and emotions,” says Jabloner. Outdoor painting became popular in the mid-19th century when paints in tubes (similar to toothpaste) were introduced. Previously, painters made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil. Artists’ portability increased with the introduction of the box easel with its built-in paint box and telescopic legs. With this free-

dom, artists could set up in any location. French impressionist painters Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated plein air painting. Outdoor painting from observation continued through the 20th century and into the 21st century. American impressionists, like the quartet in the Mayor’s Gallery showing and the members of the Tucson Plein Air Society, continue the tradition. One of Beck’s canvases, “Bungalo”, depicts a residence almost hidden by foliage. A fourth generation native of Bisbee, Arizona, Beck traces her love of outdoor painting to childhood memories of winding streets and broad, hillside vistas. Beck developed her artistic eye during her early architectural education, leading to an “intuitive depth of observation.” Beck describes her “tender sensitivity for historic places”, which infuses her art with a poetic feeling. “The works evoke clean airiness, a sense of great space, serenity and mystic glow.” Jabloner included his impression of the Old Court House in the show. Beginning at age 17, he attended the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree before going on to work for the Arizona Opera Company and the Arizona Theater Company as a scenic artist. Jabloner’s work ranges from Tucson downtown and barrio interpretations to exquisite people, animals and still life paintings.
MacKenzie’s “Vermillion Cliffs End of Daylight” presents a mountain range bathed in that magical light we see when the sun is on the horizon. MacKenzie received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and pursued a career as a graphic designer. Her main focus is the landscape, with plein air painting as an important path of her process. She is currently Chair of the Board of Directors at Tucson Plein Air Painters Society. Richardson’s “Simpson Street” is a straight-on view of light and shadow angularity showing a street scape. A native Tucsonan who graduated from Arizona College of Fine Arts and had a 45-year career in graphic design in Chicago, Richardson’s plein air watercolors are as laconic as he is. Plein air artists paint in all kinds of weather, among the birds, bugs, animals and people passing by. They’re a kind of public artist, having to work
outside their studio walls. Each of the mayor’s chosen artists depicts a vision of the city and the surrounding landscape, including the sky in their images. The plein air show in the Mayor’s Gallery will be open until March 2016. The Mayor’s Office, which includes the Mayor’s Gallery, is located at 255 W. Alameda St., 10th floor, Tucson. The Rise of Functional Medicine New Paradigm Gets to the Root Cause of Disease

In the 25 years since nutritional biochemist Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., of Gig Harbor, Washington, coined the term, this gastroenterologists and a half-dozen science-based, whole-body approach to other specialists, each of which offered addressing chronic disease has gained a different diagnosis and prescribed a widespread traction. At another, her doctor for Functional Medicine he founded suspected she had bleeding in her brain in Washington and New Mexico, and and sent her for a computerized axial numerous medical schools have added tomography (CAT) scan. Some thought its tenets to their curricula. More naturopaths and chiropractors are also distinguishing themselves with a functional medicine emphasis. “It is not alternative medicine at all,” stresses Bland, whose latest book, The Disease Delusion, details how functional medicine can curb chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, dementia, and heart disease, which constitute 78 percent of U.S. health care costs. “It’s the basis of 21st-century health care,” he says. For most of the 20th century, conventional medicine centered on a
by Lisa Marshall y the end of 2014, Trina Mills, of Parker, Arizona, had given up on conventional medicine. She’d been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder 17 years earlier and taken medication ever since without feeling her symptoms of fatigue, muscle aches and stomach problems ever fully subside. She’d visited endocrinologists,
she was a hypochondriac; others said she was depressed. “I would tell them, ‘I’m just depressed that you can’t figure out why I’m so sick,’” she says. Weighing a skeletal 82 pounds, the 54-year-old mother of three finally wrote out a living will and braced for the inevitable. Then she heard of a new Center for Functional Medicine opening at the prestigious, century-old Cleveland Clinic. As the first clinic of its kind to open at an academic medical center, it promised to look at the underlying causes of disease, while focusing on the whole person, rather than isolated symptoms. Intrigued, Mills caught a flight to Ohio and soon was offering up 30 tubes of blood, stool and saliva samples, as well as an exhaustive life history. One year later, thanks to a series of personalized diet and lifestyle changes, she’s 10 pounds heavier and feels better than she has in decades. “I spent a lot of years and money in the traditional medical system and got nothing,” says Mills. With functional medicine, “In a very short time, they had me feeling nearly 100 percent.”

singular objective: Arrive at a diagnosis and treat it with drugs or surgery. Then, the alternative medicine movement proffered a toolbox of more natural therapies, including acupuncture, herbs and massage to address these same diagnoses. The 1990s brought integrative medicine, a best-of-bothworlds approach. “While all of the above have merit, they lack the necessary guidance to help practitioners determine which tools work best for which patient,” says Dr. Mark Hyman, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine. “Alternative therapies and conventional treatments are tools. We need a new map that can teach us how to skillfully use those tools,” maintains Hyman. “That map is functional medicine.” Because one chronic disease such as diabetes can have dozens of underlying causes, or one culprit such as a genetic predisposition or exposure to toxins can lead to multiple chronic conditions, functional medicine focuses on systems, rather than organs, and origins, rather than diseases. “It’s about listening to the patient’s story in a different way, where the objective is not simply about arriving at a diagnosis,” explains Bland.
Ferreting Out Key Clues
Key to discovering the underlying origins of a health issue are a host of new gene, blood and gut health tests. “They allow us to look under the patient’s ‘metabolic hood’ at the genetic and biochemical factors influencing health,” says Naturopathic Doctor Kara Fitzgerald, who heads up a functional medicine clinic in Newtown, Connecticut. For instance, certain genes influence how a person burns and stores fat. Depending on which variant a patient has, based on a genetic test, they might be guided toward a higheror lower-fat diet. Those genetically prone to difficulty in metabolizing the amino acid homocysteine (an excess of which can raise the risk of heart disease) might be advised to take folic acid supplements. If a patient displays intractable gut problems, rather than simply look for blood or pathogens in the stool,

Fitzgerald also looks at the DNA of their gut microbiome, mapping out which strains of good bacteria are present or absent and prescribing prebiotics, probiotics or whole foods to promote a healthful balance. For another patient with thinning hair and aching joints, she might use specialized blood tests to look for micronutrient deficiencies, signs of allergies or certain autoantibodies—proteins produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack one’s own tissues—that might herald a brewing autoimmune disorder. “Research shows that predictive autoantibodies can show up in the blood 10 or even 20 years before an autoimmune disease such as Type 1 diabetes, mul-
tiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis makes itself known,” says Fitzgerald, pointing to a seminal review published in 2007 in Scientific American: “If a patient with mild, early-stage symptoms is proactive with diet and lifestyle changes, they may be able to fend it off.” High-tech tests aside, Bland stresses that what’s most important is “a tool that has been largely lost in medicine today: Knowing how to listen to the patient.” In a typical exam, Fitzgerald thoroughly inspects often neglected body parts, including the tongue and fingernails, which can hold important clues to underlying health. She asks about past emotional trauma which might

hile most practitioners recommend that patients consult with a physician to interpret their test results, several companies offer gene, blood and microbiome lab testing directly to consumers. Here are a few options to consider. uBiome, Inc. (Ubiome.com): Send in swab samples from gut, mouth, nose, genitals and/or skin and the company will genetically sequence the DNA of resident bacteria and send findings back within six weeks, identifying good and bad varieties present, deficiencies, and how that personal microbiome compares to others with similar lifestyles, such as smokers, vegans, meat-eaters, etc. It’s also possible to test a client’s microbiome over time to see if dietary changes implemented to change gut health are working. WellnessFX (WellnessFX.com): Visit an affiliated diagnostic lab to submit blood samples with results posted within a week on a secure website. Different packages targeting weight loss, sports performance, heart health or women’s health issues look at different biomarkers in the blood, such as levels of certain micronutrients, hormones or signs of inflammation. Clients can request an online consultation with a doctor or dietitian to interpret the results. Pathway Genomics (Pathway. com): The company’s DNA Insight Genetic Health and Wellness Tests use genetic material taken from saliva to analyze genetic markers. Ordered via a licensed practitioner, online or through a smartphone app, clients receive a kit, send in a sample and get results within three weeks. The Pathway Fit tests snapshot 75 genetic markers related to metabolism and sports performance. Others look for genes that influence nutrient absorption, heart health or hormonal function.
trigger chronic disease, and inquires about what environmental toxins and harmful chemicals both the patient and their birth parents may have been exposed to. One example might be a patient exposed to cigarette smoking in utero having a bias toward an allergic disease. If their parents grew up in a period of famine, they might have inherited a genetic disposition for rapid weight gain. “She spent two-and-a-half hours with me,” in her initial consultation, recalls 52-year-old Lauren Zambrelli, of Long Island, New York, who credits Fitzgerald for helping her tame her multiple sclerosis into remission. “It was like having a sister for a doctor.”

Who Pays
Functional medicine doctors don’t shy away from prescription drugs when necessary, but they do lean decidedly toward the lower-tech modalities, using dietary supplements, allergenfree diets, exercise, mind-body practices and toxin avoidance as their primary tools. “We basically take out the bad stuff from the body and put in the good stuff,” says Hyman. Maintaining good health is priceless, but without conventional insurance coverage, it can be expensive. While Mills’ doctor visits were covered by insurance (which is rare), she spends roughly $1,000 a month on supplements to address her diagnosed leaky gut syndrome, nutrient deficiencies and mercury poisoning. Zambrelli has paid thousands out of her own pocket, too. Some people worry that, like most conventional physicians, some functional medicine practitioners place too much emphasis on expensive tests and too little on the most crucial and affordable remedy—self-care. “Functional medicine as a concept is an important step forward,” says integrative medicine pioneer Dr. James Gordon, founder of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. “However, some practitioners do a lot of tests and prescribe a lot of supplements and work on cleaning out the gut, but neglect the psychological, spiritual and social issues. That concerns me.” Bland and Hyman concede that some practitioners overtest, but say that will fade over time as they learn to better discriminate which ones are useful for specific patients. Several efforts also are underway to get more functional medicine providers and the acupuncturists, massage therapists and nutritionists they work with covered under the Affordable Care Act, which expressly emphasizes a need for more preventive medicine. Viewing the big picture, Bland believes that functional medicine is just what the country needs to save on exploding healthcare costs. Rather than spending dollars on extraordinary measures to save heart attack victims or diabetics in emergencies, we can prevent such dire situations by identifying underlying problems sooner and halting their progression. In the meantime, some patients are finding priceless relief. “Am I poorer right now? Yes,” says Mills. “Am I healthier? Way. It’s been so worth it.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO, who specializes in health care. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

When researchers at China’s Central South University reviewed 13 studies on acupuncture and low back pain, they concluded that comprehensive treatment plans that involve acupuncture are urgently needed. Headache: Acupuncture has long been used to relieve the pain of migraines and tension headaches. Australian research published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that 16 acupuncture sessions cut in half the number of days that patients experienced migraines, significantly reducing pain. “Acupuncture is a must-try therapy for anyone with migraines or chronic or tension-type headaches,” says Burgoon. He notes that Aetna Insurance Company policy considers acupuncture among accepted, medically necessary treatments for migraines, chronic low back pain, knee osteoarthritis, postoperative dental pain and nausea associated with surgery, pregnancy and chemotherapy. Asthma and allergies: More than 25 million Americans have asthma, including 6.8 million children. Danish research published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine showed that 10 acupuncture sessions given over a three-month period reduced asthma symptoms and use of inhaled steroids, but only when acupuncture was ongoing. Benefits diminished when treatments were discontinued. German researchers at Berlin’s Charité University Medical Center found similar effects for seasonal allergies by comparing it with the effects of antihistamines and sham acupuncture. “Patterns of bad health get more ingrained in our body systems as we get older,” says Melanie Katin, a licensed acupuncturist specializing in treating children in New York City and professor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. “If we can catch an illness in a child’s first seven or eight years, we may be able to prevent it from becoming chronic in adulthood.” Digestive problems: Acupuncture has been found to be effective for treating colic in babies, irritable bowel syndrome, morning sickness and postoperative nausea caused by anesthesia and chemotherapy treatments, verified in research from Australia’s University of Sydney on patients after surgery for metastatic liver cancer. Several other studies, including one from the Milwau-kee’s Medical College of Wisconsin, show that acupuncture rebalances the nervous system and restores proper digestive function, while relieving pain. The World Health Organization review of research notes how acupuncture relieved gastrointestinal (GI) spasms better than atropine injections, and also recommends acupuncture for relief of nausea. “Acupuncture helps calm down an overactive GI tract and stimulates an underactive one,” explains Burgoon.

cupuncture can be helpful for children, especially in treating asthma, allergies and childhood digestive disorders, including colic, says Melanie Katin, a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in treating children in New York City. “Acupuncture for children rarely involves the use of needles. Since their qi (life force) flows very close to the surface of their skin, it doesn’t require a lot of movement to get things flowing in the right direction,” she explains. Acupuncture for kids typically involves light, fast brushing of the skin to encourage a healing circulation of energy. Katin teaches parents to continue treatments at home. She explains that it’s still technically acupuncture, not acupressure, which would involve prolonged stimulation of the body’s energy meridian sites. Sometimes she includes the use of small instruments for tapping or brushing the skin and tuning forks to stimulate the meridian points. She remarks, “The kids love it.”

Bruce Lipton on the Epigenetics Revolution Our Beliefs Reprogram Our Genetic Destiny by Linda Sechrist
B
ruce Lipton, Ph.D., author of The Biology of Belief and The Honeymoon Effect, is a stem cell biologist and internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. He is a visiting fellow lecturer on immunology at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and participated in the Foundation for Conscious Evolution’s seventh Worldwide Meeting on Human Values, in Mexico. His research explains the interplay between individual consciousness and body biology.
Why do you start with epigenetics as a foundation for health? Many people, programmed with the concept of genetic determinism, believe that genes in the fertilized egg at conception determine character and fate. Unable to pick our DNA genes, we are powerless to control our life, so that the only option is seeking help from someone in the biomedical community to fix our genes. I introduced a new vision about the understanding of genes a half-century ago that is now the new science of epigenetics. Epi- means “above”. Here, we can realize control by regulating the environment in which we live and our perception of it, making us the master of our own genetics rather than a victim of heredity.
Do you believe epigenetics is the future of medicine? Epigenetics is a revolution in our knowledge and awareness of heredity. This new concept of biology is so big that it promises radical change capable of
revolutionizing civilization. Its dynamics are equivalent to the leap from Newtonian physics to quantum physics, which led to everything from computers and cell phones to Martian rovers. We are freed to abandon the belief that genes cause cancer, for instance. In changing our lifestyle, beliefs and perceptions, we also change our genetic expression. Remember, this works because how we individually interpret our world is translated by the brain into chemical information that adjusts the behavior and genetics of cells to complement our perception. We could live in the healthiest environment, but if our mind perceives it as threatening and non-supportive, our biology will become less healthy and can generate disease. The cells’ response is based on the brain’s information, which actually is only an interpretation. Personal perceptions and the way we live, including our spiritual nature, adjust genes to manifest either a functional state of health or one of dysfunction.
the eyes, ears and nose. Each human also possesses a unique set of “identity” receptors, a subset of which are called “self-receptors” by the biomedical community, found on nearly all of our cells, with the primary exception of red blood cells. Self-receptors are unrelated to the cell’s function contributing to muscle, bone, brain or heart. Conventional medicine studies the physical aspect of self-receptors as being the source of “self” but overlook the environmental signals they receive. In other words, individual identity is linked to the signals received by the antennae. When I reached this point in my research, I realized that we can’t die, because our real identity is represented by the invisible environment-derived “broadcast”, which might legitimately be referred to as spirit. My personal identity signal is received by each of my 50 trillion cells endowed with the unique set of “Bruce” self-receptors. While my physical body is like a TV, the “spiritual broadcast” representing the Bruce Show is an eternal, energetic element of the environment.
What is entrainment and why is it important today?
A group of heart cells in a Petri dish will each beat to its own vibrational frequency. After a couple of days, they start beating in synchrony, because the stronger heart cells control the tempo. The other cells organize their behavior to entrain with the more powerful one. This happens in women’s college dormitories when residents start the school year with different menstrual cycles, but later experience entrainment, with their cycles beginning and ending about the same time. They link to a pulse and a beat, just like the heart cells. Humans become entrained to a higher force that’s an invisible broadcast Where is the “self” that makes of energy in harmony or in discordance. O
ur authentic self is constantly trying to get our attention so it may be more fully expressed. When we set our intention to genuinely evolve, we naturally begin to pay attention and see how redefining moments appear as needed. They are drawn to us sequentially to support us in the process of staying the course on our pilgrimage, each one a perfectly aligned portal in space and time, opening and closing, creating whatever experience is required to guide us to heightened awareness of our authentic self. While the possible circumstances that preclude such a moment are limitless, there are key signals to watch for. When they pop up, it helps immensely to stay engaged in the moment, rather than zipping past them on to another distraction. Rather, consider ways in which this might prove to be a pivotal point forward in our life journey. n Moments that challenge our ego and moments that our ego challenges us n Unexpected events n Times of significant loss n First-time experiences n Discontentment n Disappointment n Experiencing someone or something that instantly inspires us to grow n Birth of a loved one n Death of a loved one Personal growth and evolution can be motivated by either inspiration or
desperation. Both may prompt us to ask big questions of ourselves and the universe that cause us to dig deep. The deeper we dig, the closer we come to merging with our truest self. We know the answers to such questions are correct because they will lead to actions that honor life—like harming no one, including ourself— and affirm the presence of a prevailing power for good that lies within; a power that guides, protects and sustains us. Satisfying answers seek only the highest and best of us and bless all. They connect our mind, heart and soul, moving us forward on the path of wholeness as a fulfilled and joyfully self-expressed person. When we are impelled to ask an important question of our self and the universe, don’t rush the process and are willing to embrace the answer we receive, it pushes a reset button as to what defines us. It brings us an enhanced sense of authentic wholeness. The lesson is that when redefining moments appear, we must be open and prepared to go where we had no plans of going—because that’s where our bliss awaits us. Dennis Merritt Jones, D.D., is the author of Your (Re)Defining Moments, the source of this essay. He has contributed to the human potential movement and field of spirituality as a minister, teacher, coach and lecturer for 30 years. Learn more at DennisMerrittJones.com. January 2016

Gavlick provides resources to clients hoping to make their homes more energy efficient, including window shades that will block out heat best and evaluating the efficacy of a home’s air conditioning system. “Healthy living begins with a beautiful environment to live in,” says Gavlick. “Your home can make you feel good, and your home can also be good to the planet by the addition of green features such as solar, LED lighting, Energy Star appliances, tankless water heaters and more.”
orld-renowned, classically trained guitarist Gabriel Ayala, from Tucson, received the Arts/Culture award at the 11th Annual Dream Catcher Foundation Gala this past October. Ayala performs regularly throughout the U.S. and Canada. He recently returned from a trip to Vancouver, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles, where he collaborated with the Black Gabriel Ayala Eyed Peas on an album “that is sure to make a mark on the world of music”. When presented with the award, Ayala did not accept it for himself. Instead he said, “I am a reflection of those that raised me. It took a woman—my grandmother—to teach me how to be a man. I dedicate this award in the name of my grandmother, Eduvigues Ayala.” During the three days preceding the gala, Ayala spoke and performed with the local youth—a passion of his. “These are the reasons I live this life I live. I don’t do it for the accolades, awards, trophies, and definitely not for the money,” says Ayala. “I’m a millionaire because of the family I’ve been blessed with and for the opportunities to be around youth and to share my life with them and let them know that they’re bound for greatness.”

natural awakenings
Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance an electromagnetic life force (qi), which is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of meridians. Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridians. A practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life force. Aromatherapy: An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety and a wide range of other ailments. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to a water bath. Often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology and chiropractic or other holistic treatments.

The Temple of Universality
T
he Temple of Universality, in Tucson, is a spiritualist church founded by Reverend Betty Tatalajski. Today, under Tatalajski and with the guidance of Sanat Kumara, Saint Germain and the Ascended Masters, the activities of the Temple of Universality include healing, spiritual art, psychic messages and phenomena, classes and the Gold Pyramid meditation. Betty Tatalajski In 1979, Tatalajski was instructed by Dr. Carlos Blair, through spiritualist minister and trance medium, Reverend Robert Ireland, to take her Course in Miracles class to Camp Chesterfield, a wellknown spiritualist community in Indiana. At Camp Chesterfield, through spirit mediums, Sanat Kumara—the head of the planetary spiritual hierarchy— and the Ascended Masters told Tatalajski that she was to start a new universal consciousness called Universality, based on the universal truths found in all religions. In 1995, Tatalajski was told by Sanat Kumara to “start it now” and the Temple of Universality was born. As of December 2015, the Temple of Universality is now located in the Tucson Masonic Lodge, and celebrating its 20th anniversary. Location: Masonic Temple, 3590 N. Country Club Rd., Tucson. Astrology: A system of traditions and beliefs that holds that the relative positions of celestial bodies either directly influence life on Earth or correspond to events experienced on a human scale. Modern astrologers define astrology as a symbolic language, art form and type of divination that can provide information about personality and human affairs, aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and predict the future. Bio-Touch: Is a simple, hands-on healing technique that can be used to address all types of health concerns. A practitioner uses the first two fingers of each hand to lightly touch specific points on the body. Over time, the combination of correct points and light touch seems to enhance the body’s natural healing ability. BioTouch is easy to learn, is a complement to any healthcare program, has no levels of ability, authority or hierarchy and requires no special preparation, state of mind, religious belief, philosophy, or talent in order to achieve the desired results.

VERY SPECIAL ALTERNATIVES Colon Hydrotherapy: A safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation by natural means. Counseling/Psychotherapy: These terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who offer advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling techniques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice. Crystal and gem therapy: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. In the ancient art of ‘laying-on of stones,’ practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow.

Detoxification: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing. Energy Healing: Energy medicine balances a person’s vital life energies (prana) and main energetic centers (the seven chakras), allowing the body to naturally heal. Energy healing modalities encompass biofield, spiritual, contact, distant, therapeutic touch, Reiki or qigong. Feldenkrais® method: Helps students straighten out what founder Moshe Feldenkrais calls, “kinks in the brain.” Kinks are learned movement patterns that no longer serve a constructive purpose. Students unlearn unworkable movements and discover better, personalized ways to move, using mind-body principles of slowed action, breathing, awareness and thinking about their feelings. Homeopathy: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar,” and pathos, meaning “suffering,” employs the concept that “like cures like.”

Dr. Timothy M. Marshall
D
r. Timothy M. Marshall is a holistic neuro-specialist with a passion for natural solutions that rebalance and rebuild the brain and body and promote greater health and healing. In overcoming his own health challenges in his youth, he learned that most “dis-ease” is a result of living “out of sync” with nature—and that most disease processes are a function of an excess of toxins coupled with one or more key nutrient deficiencies. Marshall graduated from the University of Arizona, Timothy Marshall College of Medicine with his doctorate in neuro-pharmacology, with additional degrees in medicinal chemistry, toxicology and nutritional biochemistry. He specializes in the treatment of a broad spectrum of neurological disorders including depression/anxiety, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, sleep disorders, night terrors, autism spectrum disorders and Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS prevention and treatment. “If you’re taking one or more medications, and frequently think to yourself, ‘there has to be a better way’, I’m here to tell you that there definitely is,” says Marshall. “By correcting underlying nutrient deficiencies and imbalances that are a common factor in all chronic diseases, while simultaneously reducing the body’s toxin burden, the body can begin to thrive once again and heal.” For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 520-370-6044, or visit Dr-Marshall.com. M
ark Frighetti, a qigong teacher/healer at Healing Arts Qigong Center, was introduced to qigong in 1998. He began teaching ZY Qigong in 2004, and is certified to teach Level 1 and 2. Frighetti is involved with many types of natural healing and offers qigong therapy treatments, a hands-on treatment session that helps heal physical and emotional pain while raising one’s spiritual awareness. Frighetti studied acupressure under Master Augustine Fong, received his certificate to treat and began healing others. In 2002, he met Grandmaster MingMark Frighetti tang Xu, the Zhong Yuan Qigong lineage holder, and started a journey following his teachings through higher levels of ZY Qigong and Image Therapy. ZY Qigong practice helps eliminate fear and develop a spiritual awareness. Living in fear harms one’s well-being and dampens spirituality. This practice introduces a method that helps develop an inner calmness and spiritual awareness, opening the heart to allow more joy and compassion to radiate from one’s being. Frighetti teaches qigong practice at Desert Milagros, 3438 North Country Club Road, in Tucson, from 7 to 8:45 p.m., on Thursdays. She received her training in 2008 and 2009 from her mentor, Katie Garnett, Ph.D., and was inspired to share this simple tool after experiencing its benefits in her own health and healing. Albrecht celebrates the diversity of her skills and services through new logo designs created by JOmojo Design + Marketing. Tucson
Qigong and Tai chi: Qigong and Tai chi combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the flow of vital energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) in the body, improve circulation and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi was originally a self-defense martial art descended from qigong and employed to promote inner peace and calm.
natural awakenings
Reiki: A healing practice originated in Japan in the 1920s. Light hand placements channel supposed healing energies to organs and glands and work to increase feelings of relaxation. Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Sound healing: Employs vocal and instrumental tones, generated internally or externally. When sounds are produced with healing intent, they can create sympathetic resonance in the physical and energy bodies. Sound healing also is used to bring discordant energy into balance and harmony. Thermography (thermal imaging): A diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of inflammation and abnormal tissue growth. Inflammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges.

MEDITATION REPLEVYN
Dr. Joanne Haupert
D
r. Joanne Haupert uses a very powerful form of chiropractic that helps people recover from physical, chemical and emotional trauma that has put their nervous system into chaos. For over 17 years, she has been helping clients—from just a few weeks old to their last breath—reset their nervous systems and allow their bodies to heal. Her gentle touch chiropractic is also especially effective for those who have a hard time being touched or are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, failed back surgeries or birth trauma. These individuals have a nervous system that is stuck in overdrive and cannot reset, which means that the Joanne Haupert body’s self-healing properties are unavailable. Haupert’s office offers a second form of healing called Somato Respiratory Integration—a tool that she teaches people to use to relieve pain, reduce stress, increase energy and breathe easier. She also has a passion for working with children, especially foster children, and has a program that allows for any child in need to be served—even those who cannot afford it.

businessprofile Tesla Metamorphosis Practitioners
S
imone Gers, Karen Olson and Tammy Rosen Wilbur join forces to present the Tesla Metamorphosis healing modality to the Tucson community with Tesla Metamorphosis Practitioners, in a series of monthly events and workshops. Tesla healing frequencies can help clients achieve a healthy body, mind and emotions. Tesla Metamorphosis has the intent to bring the frequency of light in the human body into the perfect balance. Any illness, being manifested physically, mentally or emotionally, is a result of an imbalance of the universal lifeforce within the body—visible as a frequency of light. Once the balance of the light is re-established, the healing takes place. Clients experience disappearance of tumors, cancers, HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, back pain and more. While all three are certified Tesla Metamorphosis practitioners, they also bring other skills and knowledge to the team. Gers is a Reiki master, akashic records reader, BARS practitioner, certified Oneness Blessing giver and shamanic practitioner. Olson is also a licensed professional counselor and a couples coach and workshop facilitator using Imago Relationship Therapy. Wilbur is a guild certified Feldenkrais practitioner, a Reiki master, an awardwinning writer and a professional dance instructor. Practitioners will be holding monthly workshops exploring the energy form, the first of which will be a dream board workshop, held from 6 to 9 p.m., January 16. Participants will create their vision board for 2016 and activate it using the unique Tesla waves. Private sessions are also available. businessprofile Helping Hands Elder Enrichment Services
W
endy Annis, founder and owner of Helping Hands Elder Enrichment Services, is an ally for those stricken with dementia and their caregivers. Now, in Tucson, Helping Hands provides a program of oneon-one memory retrieval and communication activities to those struggling with dementia. These highly personalized activities are crafted around the biographies of the individuals Helping Hands serves. Each one-hour session incorporates various aspects of an individual’s life, along with the arts and history, which encourages sensory stimulation, interaction and, often, abundant memories. Sessions are conducted wherever the individual is located—in their home, assisted living or hospice facilities. Additionally, Helping Hands offers detailed explanation and instruction regarding these activities to dementia caregivers, be they family or caregiver staff. Group presentations and workshops further detail the various enrichment activities and demonstrate how to create and utilize them in home or facility settings. Annis first began to understand the sadness and unfairness associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease when numerous family members, including her mother, succumbed to it. During the last years of her mother’s life, Annis continued to develop and share her techniques with her mother and others, and witnessed how those with dementia blossomed with consistent activities. It is upon these principles and experiences that Helping Hands was created and continues to be of service today. Location: 332 N. Citadel Ave., Tucson. For more information, call 520-647-6947, email Mail@HelpingHandsEES.com or visit HelpingHandsEES.com.

The Right Vet for Your Pet
Animals Thrive with Gentle, Safe and Natural Approaches by Shawn Messonnier
P
et parents have many criteria to consider when choosing a healthcare provider for their prized pet, and among the most vital is trying to find a doctor that uses holistic therapies, because the advantages are many. Wellness care is more than vaccines. While many conventional vets consider giving vaccines and flea medications to all of their patients to be their best form of wellness care, holistic vets know these aren’t always necessary and can potentially 62
Tucson
be harmful. Instead, true wellness care involves careful consideration of proper diet, blood titer testing instead of vaccines, natural parasite control when appropriate and a heavy dose of diagnostic testing (blood, urine, fecal) to monitor organ function, check for parasites, screen for disorders of the urogenital system, liver and pancreas and early screening for cancer and other inflammatory conditions. There’s also a full physical check for common diseases like dental and heart disease and tumors.
natural awakenings
Individualized prescriptions for a proper diet and supplements to maintain health are big reasons many owners prefer a holistic vet. Natural treatments include disease prevention. Many pets treated via a more natural approach have an easier experience with occasional illness than those that don’t enjoy this specialized care. Natural therapies can quickly restore an ill pet to his homeostatic balance without the side effects often associated with multiple drug doses. A team approach is expected. A holistic practice is a team effort, and the family doctor will suggest options for care, helping an owner decide on the best therapies for each pet. A fuller range of options is available. While holistic vets prefer a more natural approach, they know that if necessary, conventional therapies can sometimes be an appropriate complement if they follow holistic principles, which means infrequent use of low-dose medications and only when absolutely needed. In general, most conditions can be treated successfully without drug therapy, extending the health and life of the patient and reducing medical costs. Gentler anesthesia means quicker recovery. A naturally balanced and gentler approach means less drugging if anesthesia becomes necessary, close monitoring of an anesthetized pet, a smooth and quick recovery for prompt discharge from the hospital and natural forms of follow-up treatment to control post-operative pain and inflammation. New hope rises for the hopeless. Many pets are brought to holistic doctors after conventional care has failed to help them. Some have been turned away by practitioners of conventional medicine because their cases are diagnosed as “hopeless”. Holistic vets and pet parents alike experience considerable satisfaction in helping to give a joyful pet a whole new lease on life. Shawn Messonnier, a doctor of veterinary medicine practicing in Plano, TX, is the award-winning author of The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats and Unexpected Miracles: Hope and Holistic Healing for Pets. 4 Reset the hot water heater to 120 degrees. This safe and efficient setting also reduces corrosion and mineral buildup. 4 Discover soap nuts and wool dryer balls. Dried soapberry fruit shells contain saponin, which works like most detergents and soaps. Toss five or six whole shells (one-half ounce) in a wash bag with the laundry. They’re good for five to eight reuses. All-natural sheep’s wool dryer balls shorten drying time, soften and fluff fabric, reduce static and help keep pet hair off of clothes.
It’s Easy to Be Green At Home and On the Road by Avery Mack
L
“
iving green means living well, using what you create with minimal waste,” says Mike Bond, an ecologist and bestselling activist author in Winthrop, Maine. Here, he and other savvy sources share tips to go ever greener in ways that are painless and affordable.
Start Small 4 Choose the best bulb for the job. Light bulbs can confuse even informed shoppers. Incandescent bulbs last more than 750 hours, but aren’t energy-efficient. Fluorescent bulbs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent and last 10 to 15 times longer. A 20-watt compact fluorescent light (CFL) uses 550 fewer kilowatt-hours than a 75-watt incandescent bulb. For additional information, check Tinyurl.com/EnergyInfoLightBulbs. For a free app showing the best buy, visit LightBulbFinder.net. 4 Use appliance thermometers. Widely available, this useful tool will confirm a correct operating temperature of 37 to 40 degrees in the refrigerator and zero degrees in the freezer. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administra64
Tucson
tion, a warmer fridge allows bacteria to grow, while 10 degrees cooler than the ideal range increases energy use 25 percent. Chiller units work harder if the room temperature exceeds 70 degrees, so keep appliances out of direct sunlight and away from the stove. 4 Find the right seeds and plants. Then get quick advice on how many to buy and how and when to plant using the SmartGardener.com step-by-step app. It encompasses more than 3,000 organic, GMO-free, edible varieties. 4 No dishpan hands. A full load of dishes in a water-efficient dishwasher uses four gallons of water versus 24 gallons for handwashing them, according to Seametrics, which manufactures flow meters. 4 Test the toilet. If a few drops of food coloring added to the toilet tank colors water in the bowl, replace the flap. It’s an easy and inexpensive DIY task. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that one in 10 homes leaks a cumulative 90 gallons a day. 4 Fix the faucet. One drip per second equals 3,000 gallons a year wasted, Seametrics calculates.

4 Change the car’s air filter. Maintain a clean filter according to manufacturer’s guidelines and visual inspection, about every 30,000 to 45,000 miles. 4 Use an oil-change service. In Connecticut alone, do-it-yourselfers change 9.5 million gallons of motor oil a year, and 85 percent of it ends up in sewers, soil and trash as a major groundwater pollutant. Earth Talk reports that one quart can create a twoacre oil slick; a gallon can contaminate a million gallons of fresh water. While the more costly chemicals in synthetic oil create the same amount of pollution as traditional oil, it doesn’t need to be changed as often. 4 Carpool. The Green Living Ideas media network condones Uber, Lyft and Sidecar apps for making ridesharing ultra-accessible.
Go Greener 4 Replace old appliances with energy-efficient models. Check out a unit’s Energy Star rating. Consider a tankless heater for hot water on demand, rather than 24/7 heating. 4 Choose eco-tires. Low rolling resistance improves gas mileage and reduces emissions. Keep tires properly inflated and periodically rotated for longer wear. Watch for future innovations in sustainable materials currently in research and development. 4 Ban idling. Don’t idle an electronic fuel-injected engine for more than 30 seconds when parked in cold weather; it warms up faster by being
driven, explains the U.S. Department of Energy. Fuel injection engines took over in the 1980s and early 90s. Only older carburetors need a couple of minutes’ warm-up. The Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory further advises, “Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel and emits more CO2 than engine restarting.” 4 Ask for pet- and eco-friendly antifreeze. Choose less toxic red-orange propylene glycol antifreeze instead of green ethylene glycol antifreeze, which is poisonous to pets and people. Dispose of both types properly, as they are toxic to wildlife and fish via groundwater, as well. 4 Green-clean car windows. Choose a brand like EvergreeN Windshield Washer Fluid, which is plant-derived, eco-friendly, non-toxic and biodegradable. Traditional blue fluid is methanol, combined methyl alcohol and wood alcohol, and extremely poisonous, especially to children and pets.

In combination with solar power, a hybrid vehicle can reduce or eliminate daily energy costs. “An electric car is perfect when commutes are not long,” Bond discloses. “If charged in the day, it can serve as the battery for a solar home at night, when no power is being created.” Connect with freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.
