n this community, we pay special attention to staying healthy and happy, from head to toe. While we often discuss alternative modalities to keep our bodies in shape, it is not as often that we talk specifically about our mouths.

Our mouth and teeth are the gateway to the rest of our bodies, so it is no wonder that many problems that start in the teeth and gums can later lead to illnesses in other areas. Keeping the teeth in good health, therefore, also helps keep the rest of us in tip-top shape.

A perfect smile could just lead to more happiness in all areas of life—including your love life. Each February, with the arrival of Valentine’s Day, there is much talk of love and relationships. But love is not always as simple as the holiday often makes it out to be. Steve Ross and Karen McChrystal, longtime marriage and family counselors, delve into some of the more real nuances of love and relationships—both with ourselves and with our partners—on page 36. Whether you find yourself happily in a relationship, working hard on a relationship, or working on yourself this month, take a moment to smile and appreciate the endless possibilities we have each day to grow and change for the better. Cheers to you,

nrollment is open for the local Heart Series program, a medicallydirected, hands-on program for anyone who wants to prevent, halt or reverse coronary artery disease. The 12-week program includes weekly, three-hour sessions, from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, beginning February 9. The aim of the program is to improve the quality and length of life by teaching the skills that will lead to health and happiness through the prevention and reduction of illness, hospitalizations, medications and invasive medical procedures. Richy Feinberg The 21-year-old program is led by Tucson cardiologist Dr. Charles Katzenberg, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center, and Edna Silva, R.N., founder of the T’ai Chi Center of Tucson. Richard “Richy” Feinberg, now Director of Public Relations for the Foundation for Cardiovascular Health/Heart Series, has been an advocate of the program since 1994. At the age of 58, he had a heart attack, followed by quadruple bypass heart surgery, then another heart attack two months later. “I was blessed to find the Heart Series program right here in Tucson,” explains Feinberg. “This month, I’ll be 81 years old. I’m happy, healthy and my heart is doing great. The program has given me the tools to be aware that negative, stressful situations can be changed to positive ones if I have the desire and fortitude to be aware of the possibility.” The Heart Series is Arizona’s first intensive cardiac rehabilitation program. It recently came in first in a contest for Influential Health and Medical Leaders for Achievement in Wellness Programs in our region. For more information, call 520-797-2281.

special Gem Show Concert event will bring the crystal sounds of peace and harmony created by Crystal Tones Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls to Tucson’s San Pedro Chapel, February 6. Experience the sacred luminous music and infinite space created by best-selling Sounds True recording artist Tryshe Dhevney, as she weaves complex, spontaneous harmonies with rich overtones from Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls. Infused with precious metals, gemstones and minerals, these bowls create a transcendent sonic immersion that embodies a profound spiritual and medicinal embrace as it uplifts, rejuvenates and transforms. “The mystery and magic within these tones are due to the musical complexity of overtones,” explains Dhevney. “Some we hear and others are silently working their magic. The bowls are harmonically responding to the energies and intentions held by every person in the audience. As a result, each audience inspires the particular sounds drawn from the moment, making every performance unique.” Location: 5230 E. Fort Lowell Rd., Tucson. Hypnosis for Dental Health Issues
P
eople often think of hypnosis for things such as stopping smoking, reducing weight and for habit changes, like nail biting. Some even think of it for medical things like pain control, but hypnosis can also be used for many other health issues, including dental. Dental hypnosis addresses issues like TMJ, tooth grinding, jaw clenching, fear of the dentist and/or needles, pre- and postsurgical, accelerated healing and pain management. In addition, it can help instill better dental health habits. Many people don’t realize that good dental health actually contributes to other aspects of one’s overall well-being. A tooth or gum issue is sometimes a clue that another part of the body may be suffering or influencing it in some way. Just like a chiropractor can connect certain areas of the spine to organs and issues at hand, many believe teeth can do the same thing. Sometimes there are metaphysical and subconscious factors involved as well. Hypnosis is a quick, easy and often fun way to get results. Norine Passero has been a practitioner in her own private practice, Hummingbird Hypnosis, for over 16 years. She is a certified practicing member of the International Medical & Dental Hypnotherapy Association. Connect with her at 520-289-6051, Info@HummingbirdHyponosis.com or HummingbirdHyponosis.com.

Let’s Talk Hormonal Acne with Plexy Laboratories
H
ormonal sensitivity is a tricky subject. Having skin that is hypersensitive to hormonal fluctuations can be detrimental when it comes to trying to maintain a clear complexion, but often times is not talked about within the skin care community. You can find countless studies about acne treatments that work to lessen inflammation caused by bacteria or by increasing skin cell turnover with the application of exfoliating acids, however within all of these studies you hardly ever find one about which hormones cause acne or even the extreme skin sensitivity some people have to these hormones. The one question that always comes to mind with people who have acne is, “Why do some people never break out”, or “why does their skin always look so flawless?” Most people ask themselves these questions, but never really look into the science behind hormonal acne, and don’t even feel the need to do their own research when big name companies are selling them the products that they supposedly need for clear skin. ‘Nothing to Hide’ works to balance your skin’s natural oil production, and to offer a solution for anyone who’s ever struggled with skin conditions such as hormonal acne. The search is over. Nothing to Hide, created by Plexy Laboratories, can be purchased online or at New Life Heath Centers. For more information, call 520-221-1856, email PlexyLabs.Comments@gmail.com or visit PlexyLabs.com. See ad, page 23.

The 50th Super Bowl will take place February 7 at the brand-new Levi’s Stadium, in Santa Clara, outside San Francisco, and the anniversary isn’t the only thing that’s historic. As part of a trend toward sustainability in athletic facilities, it’s the greenest and most technologically advanced professional football stadium in the U.S. The structure is designed to support sustainability, located on a site with accessible public transportation plus a bike path to encourage fans to pedal to and from games. Its predominantly open and airy, environmentally friendly building plan also takes advantage of the Silicon Valley climate. One outstanding feature is the green roof atop the suite tower on the west side of the stadium. Another is the three solar bridges connecting the main parking area to the stadium that generate energy from hundreds of solar panels. All of the wood used was repurposed from a local airplane hangar at Moffett Field, in Mountain View, California, and other reclaimed building products were used where possible. Reclaimed water sources serve potable and non-potable uses, including playing field irrigation. The local suppliers providing farm-totable food menus also are required to practice composting and recycling to the greatest extent possible. For more information, visit LevisStadium.com.

Reducing Coffee Shop Waste For many, getting a coffee to go at a favorite spot on the way to work or while dropping the kids off at school and running errands is a weekday ritual. It also warms up the body on cold mornings in northern regions this time of year. The java might taste even better if we reduce the amount of waste traditionally involved. Here are a few ways to better cherish Earth’s resources. Avoid the paper cup; carry a reusable thermos or insulated bottle instead as a matter of routine. Author and activist Beth Terry, in her book Plastic Free: How I Kicked the Habit and How You Can Too suggests both stainless steel beverage containers and mugs. She also recommends glass mason jars and points out that EcoJarz recently began making stainless steel caps and lids instead of plastic. Learn more at MyPlastic FreeLife.com. Terry further cites the unhealthy aspects of continual use of paper cups because, “Many are lined with plastic, and the plastic lids are often the equivalent of Styrofoam.” If caught without a favorite reusable container, Treehugger.com’s Katherine Martinko recommends at least giving an old paper cup one more turn. “It’s not a zero waste solution, but if you’ve already got a paper cup in your car or kitchen, you might as well extend its life. Wash and hand it over the next time you get a coffee,” she suggests. “It will still do the job.” For those that add cream, milk or sugar to coffee, consider the waste involved just in the plastic and wood stirrers provided by the shop that are tossed in the trash after serving their one-time function. “Avoid all of them,” advises Terry. “Carry a clean utensil in the car,” such as a bamboo tableware or a spork (combination spoon and fork). Cutting down or weaning off of dairy, sugar and especially sugar substitutes is another healthful move.

T
he Chinese Lunar Year of the Yang Red Fire Monkey begins on February 8, the second new moon after the solstice. Expect the year to be a time of adventure, discovery and luck striking at bizarre times where fortunes turn at the blink of an eye. The year of the monkey is ideal for a quantum leap in life. Now is the time to shake things up, create change and innovate a new path. Following 12 months of the female nurturing Sheep, the Red Monkey year is going to shake, rattle and roll. Under the influence of elemental fire and the monkey’s fixed element of metal, the next 12 months are slated to be an era of innovations, developments and foraging ahead. Monkey correlates to the western zodiac sign Leo. Chinese tradition imbues the monkey with strong male energy. In ancient text, he sounds very much like a Leo: “I am the seasoned traveler of the labyrinth. The genius of alacrity. Wizard of the impossible. My brilliance is yet unmatched in its originality. My heart is filled with potent magic that could cast a hundred spells. I am put together for mine own pleasure. I am the Monkey.” The text spells out how brilliantly creative, smart and inventive monkey is, embracing its hyperactive, adventurous and uncontrollable monkey-mind needing to be tamed. Monkey-mind, as the Buddhist so accurately named it, cannot be destroyed; it can only be given the proper role—a true place in our lives. To discipline monkey is to give it purpose that cleverness can grasp. Lao Tzu said it well by defining discipline as working at something until one can play at it. Monkey-mind can grasp this because it opens freedom’s gates to risk and experiment meaningfully. The Year of the Fire Monkey is a time to reach for the stars with a safety net below. Monkey energy is nimble leadership that takes nothing for granted in an unpredictable world. Even in difficult circumstances, this canny creature finds ways to overcome and succeed, often with a laugh at the loser’s expense. It is wise this year to keep a sense of humor and perspective while winning at many things, accepting that you can’t win them all. Ever the strategic warrior, monkey knows that he who laughs and runs away lives to laugh another day. Tao Time publishes a monthly newsletter prior to every new moon and provides a selection of imple-ments accessing and interpreting the I Ching to discern the time we are in and the developmental path that lies before us. Cover artist and schoolteacher Kelly Simpson paints exclusively with acrylics and pure color, maintaining that white “dilutes the passion and fierceness of a painting.” The artist covers a wide array of subjects with her vibrant palette,
from still-life renderings of fruits and flowers to abstracts and portraits. Simpson’s grandmother taught her to paint at an early age, and she later returned to the art form after developing health issues. “It started out as a therapeutic activity, but then became something greater. I like to take ugly events and transform them into something positive,” she says. Much of her inspiration comes from stories in the news or her elementary school students, many coming to the U.S. to escape conflict in their home countries. “I like to portray cultures working together,” she says, depicting multicultural women linking arms across the globe, as on this month’s cover. Simpson’s work has appeared across the Pacific Northwest and graced the pages of a children’s coloring book, an Indian college magazine and booklets promoting women’s issues. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her family and a chocolate Labrador. Visit the artist’s portfolio at KellysArtFromTheSoul.com.

Crystal C Singing Bowls Acoustic Luminescence, Ecstatic Stillness, Mystic Soundscape by Tryshe Dhevney
Tryshe Dhevney
rystal Tones Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls are not ordinary crystal bowls, but rather escorts beyond the ordinary to a state of multidimensional awareness, grace and beauty. The Crystal Tones Alchemy bowls have inspired my best-selling recordings with Sounds True. As a Harmonic Sound Explorer, I’ve chosen to work with the crystal sound power of these bowls because they are both musical instruments and highly efficient medical devices, shifting and transforming stagnant patterns in all its forms. Quartz, by nature, is a transducer of energy, which means it converts the slower vibration of dense matter to a higher frequency. When playing a quartz crystal bowl, we create a condition in the body called acoustic luminescence. At a subatomic level, the mitochondria of each cell is enlivened, allowing the frequencies that make up our human form to vibrate at a higher rate. In other words, we feel good. The bowl tones entrain with the crystalline structure that exists within our own bodies. As a result, the nervous system is soothed, balanced and in harmony. With 25 years of professional practice and performance, I have found no other singing bowl parallels the tonal purity, refined overtones and direct alignment between cellular and Universal resonance than these. I believe these are evolutionary times calling forth evolutionary means to create profound shifts at a global and personal level. Now, more than ever, we seek harmony in our lives, and Crystal Tones Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls are here to serve in this life-enriching endeavor. Join Tryshe Dhevney at the Crystal Tones Grand Temple Tent at the Days Inn, 222 S. Freeway Rd., in Tucson, and immerse yourself in crystal sound healing. See calendar for specfic dates and times. World’s Largest Gem and Mineral Show Held in Tucson
A
rizona Lapidary & Gem Rough, known as Tucson’s year-round gem show, will be representing Arizona as a vendor at the 2016 world’s annual largest Gem and Mineral Show, which has been held annually over the first two weeks of February, across Tucson hotel rooms, lobbies, tents, lawns and more since 1990. The Arizona Lapidary will feature local gems and minerals at the Days Inn Tucson Convention Center. They are the exclusive source for Breccia de Oro, coming out of the Bradshaw Mountains. This stone is brought to the market by Arizona Lapidary’s owner, geologist Linus Keating. “All Tucsonans should know the history and happenings of the Gem Show, and the origins of lapidary arts, as it is such a huge part of our city’s revenue,” says Kadee Kotter, manager of Arizona Lapidary. Humans have been hunting for gems, minerals and precious metals since time began. They have used rocks as trade, and lapidary art skills for almost 1 million years, according to the International Gem Society. The first local gem show was held at an elementary school in 1955, and now occupies between 40 and 50 locations. The show brings in over $110 million to the Tucson economy. Those interested can also join Tucson’s Lapidary Club (LapidaryClub.org) with over 500 members, where they can learn how to cut, polish and facet stones, as well as silversmith work and related areas. There are extensive shops, all of the equipment one could need, classes, meetings, programs and field trips. Location: 222 S. Freeway, Tucson. For more information, call 520-399-6641, email ArizonaLapidary@gmail.com or visit ArizonaLapidary.com. See ad, page 4.

THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP It Sustains, Nourishes and Supports Us by Judith Fertig
For a reason, a season or a lifetime, friends help us cope with challenges, motivate our best work and celebrate life. Friendships take many forms, crossing generations and self-imposed boundaries, and even spring up between unlikely confidants.
C
hildhood friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck collaborated on the Oscar-winning screenplay for Good Will Hunting. Fierce tennis competitors Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki like to get together for a gal-pal getaway after a major match. major illness.” An ongoing, two-decade-plus study of nearly 1,500 seniors by the Flinders University Centre for Ageing Studies, in Australia, found those with a large network of friends outliving others with the fewest friends by 22 percent. The University of Chicago National Opinion Research Center also reports people with five or more close friends as 50 percent more likely to describe themselves as “very happy” than those maintaining fewer confidants. “Friends past and present play powerful and often unappreciated roles in determining our sense of self and the direction of our lives,” says Flora. “Even in a supposedly meritocratic society, friends give jobs and assignments to each other, so having friends that share your career interests and aspirations can get you much farther than you could ever get on your own.”
Make New Friends, Keep the Old
Today, making and keeping friends can be challenging, due to distance, frequent life changes, overprotective parenting and substituting social media for did,” says Brooks. more intimate face time. It all makes Rafts of research confirm how friendship more fluid than we might friendship enriches us. Carlin Flora, of realize, says Shasta Nelson, the San New York City, spent years as a PsyFrancisco founder of GirlFriendCircles. chology Today writer and editor before com, a women’s friendship matching penning Friendfluence: The Surprising site and author of Friendships Don’t Ways Friends Make Us Who We Are. close friends every seven years,” says Nelson. Although this might seem alarming, she considers it a natural ebb and flow. “We all need a couple of very close friends, while others that come and go might just be what we currently need—at work or school, among first-time parents, in a new neighborhood, starting a job, in retirement or during some other life change,” she says. Canadian Greg Tjosvold, a married middle school teacher in Vancouver, Canada, has enjoyed great friendships with women, including his wife, partly because he doesn’t relate to men’s generally competitive nature and interest in sports. But when a close female friend moved away, he wanted to expand his circle to include men. He joined a group called The Barley Brethren that sample craft beers and talk about life. Although not into suds, he values “having a safe and enjoyable place to discuss deep issues, victories and temporary setbacks.” He admits, “That’s over-simplification, though.” Finding a group of men he can feel a part of has validated him, making this unique man still feel like one of the guys. Nelson categorizes the concentric circles of developing friendship as starting with a mutually agreeable acquaintance or contact, and then moving emotionally closer with someone that we find similarities with. Then the original bond can enter the confirmed friend category. A group of friends, like a longtime book club, can constitute a community. The highest level is the committed friend that has evolved into a trusted and valuable life companion. Sarah Huntsman Reed, a medical counselor in Kansas City, Missouri, has such a lifelong friend. She met Doug Reed, now a pharmacist, when both were in their high school musical, Once Upon a Mattress. Reed had a great sense of humor, Sarah remembers. “He’s still the most honest yet kindest person I’ve met,” she says. Soon, their mothers became friends, too, and the two teens would pair up for family weddings. Then she went to college and married and he moved away; yet they stayed in touch through mutual friends and their
moms, catching up in person when he returned to his hometown. Seventeen years after they first met, by which time Sarah was divorced, the two discussed taking their friendship to the next level and soon married. “It was a big decision to commit, because we knew so much about each other,” she says. “But we prefer each other’s company, and it was the best thing we ever did.”
Safety Net In trying times, friends can surround us with positive energy, says Madisyn Taylor, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the spiritual blog DailyOm, in Ashland, Oregon. “The people we love form a protective barrier that buffers and shields us from many of the world’s more crippling blows,” including receiving hurtful slights from others.

co-owner of the Hotel Diderot, in Chinon, France, with her native-born husband, says, “Social media [especially Facebook posts] is how I meet and make personal friends and keep in touch on a daily basis. As an expat, this is important because I often feel far from family and friends that understand me, share common interests and ideas and speak the same language—and I don’t necessarily mean English.” Her high-tech circle ranges from hometown pals to new friends in the food community and political forums. She raves, “It’s a place where I find them all at the same time!” Nelson remarks, “No one is saying Facebook should replace visits, nights out and phone calls, but in a world where most of us wish we felt closer to a few more people, it doesn’t hurt to use every tool at our disposal for creating connections.” Differences in age needn’t be a hurdle in forging friendships. Candelaria Silva-Collins, an arts marketing professional in Boston, attended area social gatherings where she regularly encountered a museum director and his wife. “They seemed like a fantastic couple,” she says, and began a friendship with the older woman, despite their being from different generations. “My friend teaches me a lot about being vital and vibrant,” she says.
Expanding Circles
Becoming friends with people of different ages, languages and social standing gives us a spiritual workout, advises Nelson. With a master’s degree in divinity, Nelson views friendship as a type of health club in which we develop our empathy, forgiveness and compassion muscles through practice. “Friendships are the way we become better people,” she says. Furthermore, the process, especially with people unlike us, leads to a better world. “Being able to inherently care for people we know makes it easier to do the same for people we’ve not met yet,” says Nelson. World peace happens one friend at a time. Freelance writer Judith Fertig also blogs at AlfrescoFoodAndLifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.
Causes of Iodine Deficiency
Radiation
Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation
Low-Sodium Diets
Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion
Iodized Table Salt
Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air
Bromine
A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid
Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil
A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.
What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body. February 2016

Functional Dentistry Connects Oral Health to Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease by Linda Sechrist
T
he focus of functional medicine—whole person health care—easily expands to include dentists trained in oral systemic health. Currently embraced by a small percentage of today’s farsighted dentists and doctors, this relatively new field of prevention and wellness views the mouth as a key portal when considering the status of the whole body. Similar to the way doctors of Oriental medicine assess the heart’s pulse to help diagnose health issues throughout the body, these systemic health dentists consider the gums, tongue, teeth and throat to be key signals of overall health.

American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH) Executive Director Bobbie Delsasso was a periodontal hygienist for more than 30 years before becoming a consultant and public speaker on the larger perspective. “I taught patients about the importance of good nutrition and alerted them to consult their physician regarding what their mouth health might indicate about their body’s health,” she says. While the academy educates dental professionals to understand the internal workings of nutrition and what the mouth reveals about overall well-being, “Less than 6 percent of physicians even learn adequate basics of nutrition in medical schools,” she notes.
Cardiovascular Health Links
Beyond nutrition, academy curricula for dentists now include such titles as Arteriology and Vascular Inflammation – The Oral/Systemic Connection, based on a course designed for medical professionals by physician Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, co-founders of the Bale/Doneen Method for the prevention of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. Mike Milligan, a doctor of dental medicine, founder of Eastland Dental Center, in Bloomington, Illinois, and AAOSH president, explains that

According to many studies, in a large sample of people whose general health would be considered good, a few would have such strong resistance that their gums and supportive bone stays healthy even if they were very neglectful of oral hygiene, eating habits and the like. Another small group would be highly prone even if by Steven Swidler they were very conscientious. Take equal parts of salt and baking soda in a “dipping bowl” and, using a damp toothbrush, dip into the powder mixture and brush. You may need to reapply as necessary. This technique might be a bit messy and not taste great, but will do wonders for decreasing the biofilm buildup and inflammation associated with early stage periodontal disease. This oral hygiene method can be included a few times per week as a maintenance or preventive means to battle gum disease. Holistic dentistry focuses on treating the whole body and not just the symptoms, as with mainstream health care, so it is no surprise that the discipline stresses good nutrition and gut health—key factors among those that enjoy freedom from dental problems. Teeth, like bones, are made up of primarily calcium and phosphorus. Individuals, who, at any time in their lives, have been shortchanged of these Steven Swidler two valuable elements in their diet, will most likely suffer a degree of adverse dental effects, such as soft teeth or weak bone support for the roots. The saliva that is produced for us by glands in and around the mouth contains calcium and phosphorus in solution, along with various enzymes. The calcium and phosphorus ions help to keep teeth strong by depositing themselves in the outer layers of the teeth. Therefore, under the right conditions, teeth are constantly being hardened or mineralized. The key to avoiding the effects of most types of gum disease in human beings should include a multifactorial approach, outlined below. • A focus on proper nutrition and gastrointestinal health, to decrease overall inflammation and immune issues • Test and monitor mouth alkalinity/acidity • A consistent and thorough oral hygiene program including, but not limited to, brushing, flossing, use of a Waterpik and in many cases, oil pulling • Smoking cessation • Safe and effective home care products • Drinking plenty of water • Brush teeth or swish with water immediately after eating highly acidic foods or drinking lemon water • Regular hygiene and dental check-ups

s a spiritual counselor, energy worker and doctor of chiropractic, Sylvaine Francine empowers her clients by freeing them from the emotional impact of traumas (past or present) and helping them to find their joy, power and center. She specializes in stress release and is certified in many techniques, including neurosynthesis, Thought Field Therapy and Reconnective Healing. Francine takes into consideration her clients’ needs and specific circumstances by getting to know each individual’s situation before choosing a protocol. She uses many combinations of modalities because, she says, “We are unique and complex beings and we may respond better with one energy modality over another.” “Life always throws us a new curve. A new situation may lead us to experience sudden shyness, or plain rage,” explains Francine. “In between lies an entire range of emotions. Only one emotion is a constant: joy.” According to Francine, our joy is always there but often buried under layers of emotional baggage, stuck emotions and outdated reactions. “When our joy is buried deep, we can’t access it and we feel as if we have become somebody else. But joy is still present. It did not go anywhere; it has been buried and we just do not feel it anymore.” Working with Francine, there is nothing drastic or scary about releas-

Once the release is over, her clients feel different, with a new sense of freedom, lightness and peace. “As layers of unnecessary and stuck emotions are removed, the body’s vibrational frequencies are raised and finally, joy surfaces,” says Francine. “I love what I do because to assist people in reaching their joy is a great service. It is very rewarding work to help people manifest new paradigms for themselves,” enthuses Francine. “They move on into a new life where they are free from emotional replays and fluctuations. They are in charge of their life again.” Francine is a Bach Flower Es-

I connect with these worlds and it helps me facilitate healing and also bring invaluable insights to others,” explains Francine. “My clients love it. I help them manifest a better life.” Aside from consultations, which she offers in person, by phone or Skype, Francine also facilitates a series of meditation classes, levels I and II, a weekly meditation gathering (by donation) and a Master Mind class, beginning February 13, where she teaches participants how to harness and protect their energy. She offers a package for first-time clients, which includes one 90-minute session, plus three follow-ups of 50 minutes each, as well as flower essences to foster easefulness. Other options are also available. Sylvaine Francine practices in Tucson and Washington State. For more information, call 206-501-7575 or visit SylvaineFrancine.com. WHIMSICAL REALISM
“W

here does your art come from?” is a MacGuffin question at which every artist balks. Neda Contreras is no different. Her still life oils—juxtapositions of skeletons, birds, cats, dogs, old cars, plants, fruits, vegetables and pottery on beaches—are her own making. The naturalism of their placement is whimsically natural, as though one could stumble on the scene and chuckle. “When I started painting still life,” Contreras recalls, “I went ‘Oh! That’s like Mexican Folk Art.’ I didn’t plan it that way. I wasn’t trying to do that; it just came out of me.” “I get more realism from oilbased paints than any other medium. Oils have a spirit to them, deeper, 34

richer than any of the others,” she says. Contreras’s oils follow the process of numerous painted layers, light to dark, between extended drying times. “When it looks good to me, I stop,” the artist explains. After six months of drying, the painting is varnished. She does not use solvents, making the time longer than usual to bring a painting before the public eye. Contreras’s works fall into two categories: series paintings and ex-voto (meaning “in gratitude, devotion”) pieces. Her preferred palette includes earthen tones with blues and reds. Her cat series explored other artists’ styles. “I wanted to see what a different palette looked like, so I started at it,” Contreras smiles. “I had great fun,

so I kept going.” Twenty-seven portraits of cats in the styles of Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Chagall, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Rousseau, Matisse, Cezanne, Degas, Dali and Gainsborough explored a vast variety of palettes. “I look around to see what I want to put in my still lifes. I don’t plan my paintings; stuff just comes to me,” she explains. Contreras’s birds, dogs and car series displays a variety of narrative scenes. “I have to have humor in my art or I’m not happy with it,” she says. Each painting can be looked at with a smile that doesn’t grow old. Her ex-voto paintings are especially provocative. The palette is her usual earth tones, the subjects scattered about a beach scape, sky above and handwritten text in the lower third. “People feeling sincerity, a fulfillment of a vow chose my ex-votos. I do my own writing,” says Contreras. Many grace the walls of art-minded, spiritually understanding people. The paintings reflect gratitude for the temporal. An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity. It is given in fulfillment of a vow or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such, they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper,

I started selling art there,” recalls Contreras. “Before that, I didn’t sell anything because I didn’t put it out. For 20 years, I painted still lifes and seascapes. Many have since been sold. We opened our own gallery in 2008.” What does the future of Contreras’s art look like? “I’ll continue doing the things I do. I like skeletons in my paintings now. There will still be birds, dogs and cats and that little girl that keeps appearing in my paintings,” she smiles. Neda Contreras runs Contreras House of Fine Art with her husband E. We’re still looking for our soul mate, and it is okay to not compromise or “settle”. Compromising is something almost all of us have done too much of. Too rarely are we aware of the common, important, yet hidden beliefs that compel compromise and cause us to sabotage promising relationships. These include the fear of being too much, too strong, too successful, too needy or not good enough. We can learn to navigate and overcome these perils—the “Jaws” of the emotional ocean. According to Lew Engel and Tom Ferguson in their landmark book, Imaginary Crimes: How We Punish Ourselves and How to Stop, notions like these are not only common, but also unconscious. They are self-denigrating and/or self-limiting beliefs and are usually false. If, for instance, we get lost in the expectations others have of us, we might discover a hidden fear from our early years that our own assertiveness and independent success would somehow threaten or be disloyal to the family system and to our (often) lessby Steve Ross and Karen McChrystal than-happily-married parents. Our cultural values have shifted. It’s far more acceptable these days to marry late or not at all. We’re still looking for our soul mate, and it is okay to not compromise or “settle”.
Here are some guidelines to help develop personal authenticity: • Dealing skillfully with all of our feelings, especially anger and resentment • Communicating openly, honestly and non-judgmentally • Listening non-defensively (includes the use of respectful silence) • Staying present (mindfulness) • Taking emotional risks • Letting go of trying to control how other people behave and the end results of our actions • Forgiveness and compassion (for ourselves and others) There is no need to be cynical. To gain insight and increase the chances of a happier life is a worthy goal. Once on this path, we will attract others who
by our own success and assertiveness, that’s a sign the match might be in trouble or might never work out. We’ve known many people, ourselves included, who’ve “made do,” by trying to minimize or overlook the mismatch in an unequal situation (for example, with someone not as mature or intelligent). These relationships prove difficult from the outset and the dice are loaded against their long-term success. Another “imaginary crime” we commit is feeling guilty based on the hidden belief that it’s selfish to expect (or even ask) that our own needs be met. If indeed we feel that our own needs are either unjustified or too hot to handle, then expressing them would feel like weakness or poor judgment, and be seen as burdensome or even harmful. For someone who feels that way, the give-and-take of intimacy could feel uncomfortable. The fact is that under most circumstances, adults don’t really need that much emotionally. Basically, we want to feel listened to, understood, respected, appreciated and cooperated with. These are basic human—and utterly justifiable—desires and expectations, completely harmonious with the values we all live by. In an honest relationship, the gift of intimacy is a gift of self that includes what we have to offer as well as what we need to receive.
are also on it. As we become more transparent and aligned with our core values, we can be “seen” by potential partners who are looking for these very qualities, who share these values and who therefore can appreciate and experience us fully. Graced by such companions, trust grows, making true intimacy possible. Steve Ross, MA, and Karen McChrystal, MA, are two long-time marriage and family counselors. Their book, How To Get Married After Forty: A Radical Approach to Finding and Keeping Your Mate, is available in paperback or as an eBook from Amazon. com and BarnesAndNoble.com.
