hances are, we’ve all experienced the healing powers of music at one time or another. Whether it was the soothing beat, the sound of that certain singer’s voice or the lyrics that we desperately needed to hear in that moment— music has a way of curing what ails us. Here, see how different types of music can have an effect on us, both body and mind. On page 23, read about how drumming, chanting, crystal bowls, gongs and more can be used to re-harmonize the body, benefiting those suffering Holly Baker, publisher from depression, Alzheimer’s, substance abuse, and even those with cancer. Another method of gentle healing is restorative yoga, which Meredith Montgomery illuminates on page 22. September is National Yoga Month—a great time to begin or enhance your yoga practice. With the beginning of a new school year, of course we must focus on our children and their well-being and growth this year. Learn some fun and delicious vegan choices to pack in their lunchboxes, on page 36. A topic affecting more children than ever before is autism. Whether your child is on the autism spectrum, or goes to school with someone who is, we can all learn more about how autism is “a whole-body condition that can improve, rather than a static, lifelong genetic disorder”, on page 32. Several local experts also weigh in with their methods for assisting with autism—through homeopathy, BioTouch and integrative developmental pediatric care. So, take time to heal and renew this month. Turn up that song that makes your heart soar, try sound therapy, take an extra yoga class and learn more about helping others around you heal. Helping others is often the best way to help ourselves. To healing and new beginnings,

premier intuitive music therapist, Suzanne Grosvenor is celebrating 40 years as a musical presence in Tucson. Grosvenor currently teaches Personal Creative Development with musicians, piano students and instrumentalists. Listeners are challenged to choose music that resonates for them, listen five hours a week or more, and note any life changes. Listening is free and music is downloadable for a small fee. or over a year now, Tula Wellness, in Tucson, has been offering ThermiVa, a comfortable and non-invasive treatment for mild to moderate stress incontinence or urge incontinence (involuntary leaking of urine) and vaginal rejuvenation. Tula Wellness is following up on the many clients who have finished their three treatments, and the results are confirming ThermiVa’s efficacy. Women have had remarkable results with partial or complete resolution of symptoms. At Tula Wellness, these treatments are done by two highly experienced clinicians with over 50 years of combined experience in gynecology—Dr. Arianna SholesDouglas, M.D., FACOG, and Barbara Cooper, CNM, NP. This includes a complete pelvic exam to assess any problems and to individualize patients’ treatments. This personalized care is not offered in offices that do not focus on gynecology. “Vaginal moisture and lubrication are increased. There are cosmetic benefits of vaginal rejuvenation as well,” reports Sholes-Douglas. “Women report their labia being smaller and tighter and firmer. There is a tightening of the vaginal opening. Our clients are pleased to report increased sexual response, and even an increase in libido related to changes in the tissues and improved comfort with sex.” ThermiVa treatments use radiofrequency energy to gently heat the vulvar and vaginal tissues to reclaim, restore and revive feminine wellness without discomfort, surgery or downtime. The safe treatments are an excellent option for women with vaginal dryness when systemic and topical hormones are contraindicated. Treatments are done in a series of three sessions lasting 30 minutes, each session a month apart. The treatments’ effects can last up to one year with women coming in for a “touch-up” treatment at six to 12 months. For more information, call 520-577-1129 or visit TulaWellnessMD.com. Become the Woman You are Meant to Be

A

uthors and teachers HeatherAsh Amara (Warrior Goddess Training) and Sarah Marshank (Being Selfish) are leading their first retreat in Tucson, Become the Woman You are Meant to Be, from noon to HeatherAsh Amara & 6:30 p.m., October 8, at Sarah Marshank Mindful Yoga East. Retreat participants will create a safe and sacred space to unpack limiting agreements and discover the truth of their potential. Amara has facilitated hundreds of workshops in the Toltec tradition and taught extensively with Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. As she says in her book, Warrior Goddess Training, “As women, we are trained to seek our wholeness and value and to find love through others. The new women’s revolution is an evolution from being otherfocused to inner-focused. When our attention is trapped by fearful shoulds, what ifs, and don’ts, we scatter our energy and struggle with knowing what is authentic for us. When we bring our attention back to discovering who we are on the inside— not who we wish we were or who we think we should be— we begin a sacred path of transformation toward our innate, authentic, embodied power.” Drawing on wisdom from Buddhism, the Toltec tradition and ancient Earth-based goddess spirituality, the Warrior Goddess path includes personal stories, rituals and exercises that encourage and inspire women to become the true warrior goddesses they are meant to be. Cost: $149 before September 15, $169 after. Pay in full or in three installments. Location: 1101 N. Wilmot Rd., #123, Tucson. For more information or to register, call 520-300-4378 or visit MindfulYogaTucson.com.

Sacred Space Presents Cognitively-Based Compassion Training

kudos

ally Dodds, Ph.D., in conjunction with Sacred Space, will present Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT), an eight-week, contemplative course that uses meditation to gradually train the heart and mind in the qualities of compassion, from 1 to 3 p.m., Sundays, starting September 25, in Tucson. Developed at the Emory University-Tibet Partnership by a former Buddhist monk, the entirely secular CBCT uses a step-by-step approach and covers a different topic each week related to compassion, including self-compassion, equanimity and impartiality for all people, interdependence and interpersonal Sally Dodds connection, appreciation and gratitude, kindness, empathy and universal love and compassion. To deepen these qualities, students learn to use several different meditation techniques. Practices used first are those designed to enhance mindfulness—or the ability to focus, pay attention and be present. Once a degree of stable attention has been gained, compassion practices are used to promote self-reflection and self-awareness, aid in taking the perspectives of others and in enhancing positive mental states. “Recent research has shown that people who train in compassion have improved interpersonal relationships and overall well-being,” says Dodds. “Further, studies suggest that the underlying biology of compassion actually enhances both physical and mental health.” Dodds is a 20-year meditator and certified teacher of CBCT. A retired university research professor, she has studied stress and mind-body health, integrative medicine and CBCT with breast cancer survivors. Location details will be provided upon registration. Cost of the training includes eight audio recordings of guided meditations, readings and handouts.

See the film and stay for an exclusive, in-theatres-only, 30-minute concert of The Beatles’ 1965 performance from Shea Stadium, digitally restored with remastered sound. Banish Emotional Distress at Yume Japanese Gardens

Y

ume Japanese Gardens of Tucson reopens for the fall/winter season on October 1, and its Stroll for Well-Being Program resumes at mid-month. Strolling the gardens is a measure to pull out of dire spiritual and mental circumstances that has the added benefit of enhancing a youthful and creative outlook on life. Participants in the Stroll for Well-Being Program walk through Yume Gardens with journals prepared by healthcare professionals containing questions to encourage them to pause and reflect at a dozen designated spots along garden walkways, where the setting serves as an allegory of a crucial life situation, such as making a difficult transition, proceeding without knowing exactly where one will end up, or drawing upon inner resources for strength. Open to everyone and repeated throughout the year, the 12-week program at Yume Gardens offers an initial group welcome from a professionally trained facilitator. Participants receive a journal/guide book at this session, and may opt for an iPhone app as well. Four weeks later, participants and facilitator meet again to go over questions and to listen to each other’s experiences. At the end of the program, participants meet to share how the stroll has affected their life. Veterans suffering from PTSD, cancer survivors and widows and widowers are just some of those who have benefited since the Stroll for Well-Being Program was instituted at Yume Gardens in 2015. They report discovering a new purpose in life after losing a family member, learning how to focus their minds to better observe and better create, and learning to put the past behind them and move confidently into the future. Location: 2130 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson. For more details on the program and to sign up, call 520-272-3200 or visit YumeGardens.org.

eventbrief Darsombra Live at the Galactic Center

D

arsombra, a trans-apocalyptic galaxy rock duo for dreamers, schemers and those seeking an audio-visual journey, will perform at 8 p.m., September 27, at the Galactic Center, in Tucson. The makers of this sound and vision are Brian Daniloski, spinning webs with a guitar and his voice and a multitude of effects pedals; and Ann Everton, enriching the sound with synthesizer, gong and voice, as well as creating a moving backdrop of imagery, projected on the two as they narrate without words a voyage of the soul. The sound is alive and symbiotic, organic and rich—it could be called progressive rock, psych rock, glam or metal or moody like a soundtrack, but the music is not a sound bite. The songs are journeys, and the videos are guides. Darsombra has been touring relentlessly for over 10 years at music venues, house shows, galleries, festivals and more. Recent tours in the U.S. and Europe have paired Darsombra with Wino, Jucifer, Thrones, Floor and Stinking Lizaveta, and the duo just completed their massive, three-part tour of 111 cities in North America—the Three-Legged Monster Tour of 2015. Cost: $10. Location: 35 E. Toole Ave., Tucson. For more information, visit Facebook.com/GalacticCenter and Darsombra.com. September 2016

What Writing Can Do for Your Business by Eve Hady and Stephanie Parker

L

ike so many small businesses, The Accurate Wordsmith employs only a few people—the two founders. This isn’t unusual. In fact, companies in the U.S. having fewer than 100 employees comprise the largest proportion of business employment. Most small business owners must handle marketing, advertising, networking, financing, supplies and customer service. Yet, many small business owners seldom incorporate daily writing about the business into their practice. By integrating writing about their business and writing clearly, persuasively and powerfully, business owners can make their case to their customers. From Fast Company, here are some tips for getting the most out of writing daily content for a business. Think about a headline that tempts the reader’s curiosity to click through to read the whole story. Use numbers. A small but important outcome from research is that digits instead of written numbers (i.e., 10, rather than ten) work well in headlines and higher numbered lists (i.e., “100 Ways To…”). The most powerful source to activate our brains is storytelling. Knowing the audience well, understanding the audience goals, using simple word choices and short sentences and tailoring words to the audience will produce dedicated, responsible followers and customers or clients. The Accurate Wordsmith is both a consultant and copy writing company. Connect at 520-955-2468 or SP.Wordsmith@gmail.com.

Cruz River Valley south of Tucson, the area has a long tradition of being both a melting pot of different cultures and a spiritual gathering place for new-world seekers and sages. Nestled between the sky-islands of Southern Arizona, the valley below has come to be known as the “palm of God’s hand”. Avalon Gardens’ founders, Gabriel of Urantia and Niánn Emerson Chase, created the Earth Harmony Festival to share the vision unfolding at Avalon Gardens and to inspire others to pursue a lifestyle of positive global change through sustainable living on all levels. Festival organizer Amadon DellErba says, “This festival is really about showing people that a new way of living is possible. We want to educate and inspire others to change their consciousness around what it means to be truly sustainable. The culture here at Avalon reflects a physical reality that models the intrinsic values of environmental, social and spiritual sustainability.” The festival weekend is filled with educational speakers; EcoTours highlighting the many sustainable practices of the EcoVillage; yoga; higher-consciousness live music; dancing; delicious and vitalizing foods; a kaleidoscopic interactive Kids’ Village; a Locavore’s Vendor Village; and camping under the celestial skies. The popular EcoTours provide an in-depth look into organic gardening; permaculture; rainwater harvesting; grey water harvesting; heritage crops and heirloom seeds; poly-culture and food diversity; composting; solar and wind energy; green building techniques, incorporating natural materials as well as upcycled and recycled materials; watershed management; and Arizona’s largest Food Forest. Live music for the festival is provided by Global Change Music Nonprofit Record Label, with performances by: TaliasVan & The Bright & Morning Star Band—a nine-piece performing CosmoPop spiritual vocal music fusing rock,

jazz, Celtic, folk and world styles in an interuniversal and interdimensional experience, with lyrics that address the sufferings of our times and give hope for a better world to come; VansGuard—an eight-piece conscious folk-rock band aligning spirituality, familial bonds, humanitarian and ecological concerns and fine song craft to create a global paradigm shift through music; Starseed Acoustic Ensemble—a six-piece alternative folk world blend of melodies and harmonies that cry out for true peace and planetary unity; and Ellanora DellErba & The Israfel Awakened Band— a five-piece, led by a captivating singer/ songwriter ahead of her time, that brings ballads of life’s journeys in a country style with a cosmic twist, imparting a sense of love, hope and eternity. Yoga classes will be offered by SanSkritA DellErba. Trained in Hatha/Iyengar yoga, SanSkritA is a sensitive teacher with a deep understanding of asana practice, pranayama techniques, proper alignment, modifying poses and adjustments, prop use, anatomy, sequencing building blocks, working with different body types, hands-on adjustments, ayurvedic health and much more. SanSkritA’s approach is in expressing yoga as an art form, where the body is the medium and each asana takes the practitioner to a new level of personal discovery. Entrance to the festival is free. Donations for activities and EcoTours are encouraged to help foster the EcoVillage’s many prototype projects for creating a more sustainable, environmentally conscious and equitable world. The Earth Harmony Festival thrives on partnership. Donors and sponsors make the festival possible and help support Avalon Gardens Internships, the Personality Integration Rehabilitation Program and Homeless Is Not My Choice—nonprofit programs which assist individuals from diverse backgrounds in various levels of healing, training and education to actualize their dreams and talents. W

e are in a powerful awakening that is affecting us all. The process of facing and accepting the shadows within us, meditating and filling our hearts with love for all humanity lays the groundwork for a spiritual path. To wake up our consciousness, expand it and help lift humanity up as a whole, is not easy work. Grandmaster Mingtang Xu, lineage holder of ZY Qigong, says that many paths lead up the spiritual mountain and there are tests at higher levels that require diligence in order to keep moving forward. “Often, after facing these tests, people simply turn around and go back down to circle the mountain to find a different path, only to find themselves facing the same tests again,” says Mark Frighetti, a certified teacher of ZY Qigong in Tucson. “I have gone around and circled the spiritual mountain myself enough times to have possibly climbed the summit a number of times.” Frighetti, who teaches levels 1 and 2 of ZY Qigong, has been teaching since 2005. “ZY Qigong is a very old system that is proven to help you to move forward on your journey. Level 1 lays the groundwork to provide a solid base, and regular classes offer additional support.” Location: Desert Milagros, 3438 N. Country Club, Tucson. ev. Susan Wright, of Infinite Self Creations, offers John of God Crystal Bed sessions in Tucson. One year ago, she met John of God in the Casa Dom Inacio de Loyola, in Brazil, and was fortunate to get permission to bring back the John of God Crystal Bed to Tucson. Sessions result in experiences such as spiritual enlightenment, pain elimination and healing on all levels—physical, mental and emotional. The Crystal Bed is a therapeutic crystal Chroma Therapy healing light system designed by the Divine Light Beings that work through the renowned Brazilian Medium Healer, John of God. The profound healing system pulses colored light through seven clear quartz crystals into one’s energy field and the seven main chakra centers. “A treatment session is very relaxing and comfortable,” explains Wright, a Reiki Master. “The crystals have been blessed by the entities so that the high level of healing is administered to the client by spiritual beings who work with John of God in Brazil.” The crystal bed sessions are run in accordance with the rules of the Brazilian Casa. Clients are asked to wear white or light colored clothing only. The process opens, cleanses and balances one’s etheric fields, raising the frequency of the energy body to enable a team of spiritual surgeons to perform deep healing work on all levels of the body—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Relax and Unwind Restorative Yoga Poses

Foster Healing by Meredith Montgomery

I

n classical yoga, teachers often sequence instruction toward reaching a pinnacle pose such as an inversion or arm balance. In restorative yoga, the peak pose is savasana—in which the practitioner fully relaxes while resting flat on their back. Leeann Carey, author of Restorative Yoga Therapy: The Yapana Way to Self-Care and Well-Being, explains, “This passive asana practice turns down the branch of the nervous system that keeps us in fight-or-flight mode and turns up the system allowing us to rest and digest. It feels like a massage for the nervous system and encourages self-inquiry, reflection and change, rather than perfection.” The physical, mental and spiritual benefits are similar to those of active yoga, but because poses are held longer and supported by props such as bolsters, blankets, belts and blocks, “There’s no stress on the tissue and joints. Each pose gifts us with longer-lasting benefits, including more time for the mind to unwind,” advises Carey. “Restorative yoga allows both muscles and the brain to recover from fatigue, so we are stronger, sharper and better able to act in the world afterward,” explains Roger Cole, Ph.D., a certified Iyengar yoga teacher in Del Mar, California, and a research scientist studying the physiology of relaxation, sleep and biological rhythms. He attests that it also serves as preparation for pranayama (mindful yoga breathing) and meditation, which require a clear, well-rested, focused mind. Perfect for beginners and used by longtime practitioners to complement other yoga styles, restorative poses are designed to accurately realign and reshape the body. They also can be therapeutically tailored to support natural healing for issues related to

tension, premenstrual syndrome, weak immune functioning, back pain, pregnancy and recovery for athletes. “Poses for healing may require targeted gentle stretching, but prop use will coax the body into desired positions without requiring muscular effort,” says Cole. An early student of B.K.S. Iyengar and familiar with props, San Francisco resident and co-founder of Yoga Journal magazine Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., found herself leading her first class comprised entirely of supported poses during a power blackout at a 1980 workshop. “I didn’t want people walking around in the dark, so I improvised a restorative class and everyone loved it,” she recalls. She revisited the idea several years later when she personally felt the need for physical, emotional and spiritual restoration. For a year, 90 percent of her practice was supported poses, and the switch helped her so much that it inspired her first book, Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times. She’s since written more books and trained teachers in restorative yoga around the world. As in classical yoga, a restorative sequence should be balanced with asanas (positions) from all pose classifications— backbends, twists, inversions and forward bends. It takes time for the body to comfortably settle deeply into a pose—as long as 15 minutes—therefore, a 90-minute restorative class may include only a handful of asanas. Lasater says, “Most people don’t need more of anything from the culture in which we live. They need much more to learn to be still and at ease.” In today’s yoga world, which seems to emphasize power and action, “Restorative yoga has become imperative to balance activity and ambition with stillness and being,” she continues. Lasater notes that while many classes are reducing savasana to as little as three minutes, students need 20 minutes. Carey clarifies that because this approach focuses on opening and letting go, rather than striving for the biggest stretch, “Sensation-seeking yogis may need to shift their perspective. The biggest challenge is often quieting the mind while the body is still. When a student is uncomfortable because the mind is screaming, it helps to compare it to having tight hamstrings in an active class. We’re not chasing relaxation; just breathe, feel and watch,” she says. “Eventually, everything will let go.” “The more our mind rebels against relaxing, the more we need it,” observes Lasater. Students often turn to yoga as a strategy for feeling whole, and she suggests that one of the best ways to find clarity within is to listen in stillness, one savasana at a time. “It’s a gift to ourself, our family and the world,” she adds. “When we feel rested, we’re more compassionate and ready to serve the greater good.” Meredith Montgomery, a registered yoga teacher, publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLivingHealthyPlanet.com).

Practical Applications

Consider some of music’s scientifically validated health benefits: Stress: Singing, whether carrying a tune or not, is a powerful way to combat stress, according to many studies. A recent joint study by German and British researchers published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience confirms that simply listening to soothing music results in significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The more intense the experience is in singing or playing an instrument, the greater the stress reduction. effect on individuals that have lost their voices due to overuse. Pain: When a group of British citizens suffering from chronic pain joined a choir, a Lancaster University study found they were better able to manage their condition for improved quality of life. Just listening to harp music for 20 minutes decreased anxiety, lowered blood pressure and relieved pain in a group of U.S. heart surgery patients with short-term pain participating in a University of Central Florida study in Orlando. Alzheimer’s Disease: In addition to reducing the agitation and anxiety frequently accompanying Alzheimer’s disease, researchers at Florida’s University of Miami School of Medicine found that a group of patients that participated in music therapy for four weeks experienced increased levels of the calming brain chemical melatonin.

How It Works

“Humming or singing causes longer exhalations than normal, helping to naturally eliminate toxins and acidity,” says Dr. Madan Kataria, of Mumbai, India, who has spawned 5,000 laughter clubs worldwide. “We started experimenting with the vowel sounds and humming sound. An early unpublished humming study I did in Denmark showed that people that hummed anything for just 10 minutes were able to reduce their systolic blood pressure by 10 to 15 points, their diastolic by four to five points and their pulse rate by 10 beats per minute.” Kataria found that people with breathing problems like asthma and emphysema experienced especially positive effects because it strengthened belly muscles used in breathing. Kataria is also a fan of kirtan—Hindu devotional call-andresponse chants often accompanied by ecstatic dancing. “Kirtan takes away self-consciousness or nervousness and anxiety,” he says. Dr. Eben Alexander, who recorded his near-death experience in Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, says the “indescribable” cosmic music he experienced has helped him come to understand the effects of specific sound frequencies on the brain. He now provides audio tools to help bring the brain to a higher state and help it match that higher and more conscious state. In his medical practice in Charlottesville, Virginia, he often employs music from a patient’s past to help them emerge from a brain injury or coma and even “reconnect pathways in a damaged brain.” Alexander explains that binaural beats and other sound effects combine to create “brain entrainment” and also in theory, “monotonize” it to free awareness and access realms other than the physical. “It’s magical what the right type of music can do to the brain stem to free up our consciousness,” he observes.

No Talent Needed

Experts agree that people without musical talent are able to experience the same benefits as virtuosos, based on their degree of engagement with music. Anyone can hum, and most research confirms that benefits are enhanced in creating music rather than merely listening to it. Group singing has become increasingly popular, especially following the hit TV show Glee. Time magazine reported in 2013 that 32.5 million American adults sang in choirs, up about 30 percent from a decade earlier. September 2016

The choice of musical genre matters. Recent data from Montreal’s McGill University shows that types of music tend to have specific effects; for example, blues slows heart rate and calms an anxious person, rock and punk can boost energy, and reggae can help control anger.

Spirit Moves

The spiritual aspects of virtually all types of music cannot be underestimated, says Michael Hove, Ph.D., a cognitive neuroscientist affiliated with Harvard Medical School and Fitchburg State University, in Massachusetts. His research has primarily focused on drumming to induce altered states of consciousness that shamans from diverse cultures use to bring about

physical and emotional healing. What Hove calls a “boring and super-predictable” drumbeat of 240 beats a minute induced a deep trance state within minutes in most subjects, and brain scans confirmed that it enabled them to focus intensely and block out distracting sounds within eight minutes. This aligns with Alexander’s view that, “The sound of music is absolutely crucial in launching us into transcendental awareness. For the true, deep seeker, sound and vibration and the memory of music can serve as a powerful engine to help direct us in the spiritual realms.” Kathleen Barnes has authored numerous natural health books, including her latest, Our Toxic World: A Survivor’s Guide. Connect at KathleenBarnes.com.

Nature’s Healing Sounds The calming sounds of rushing water and gentle breezes are well known; science is now confirming the therapeutic effects of singing birds. Belgian researchers confirmed that bird song helps drown out the stressful effects of traffic noise, and Korean scientists found it makes people feel less crowded. A study published in the American Journal of Physiology showed that it can even help regulate participants’ circadian rhythms, contributing to restful sleep and overall wellness.

The Secret of Sublime Living Savoring Perfect Present Moments by Carl Greer

satisfying tales can be replaced when we live according to a new story we write each day, called, “My life is an extraordinary adventure,” or “I relish being with my children,” or “I express love through sharing my music,” or “I am being true to myself, and that enables me to help others heal.” The more we focus on what brings us happiness, revitalization, purpose or meaning, the easier it will be to upgrade priorities and discard any plot lines and events that seem scripted by someone else. We can then make a new commitment to writing and living a more satisfying story for ourselves. We can pause to contemplate our power to be the storyteller and to always remain fully present and conscious of the sublime moments. ife has many sublime pleasures: watching the sun rise over the horizon and observing the changing colors of the clouds; laughing with a best friend; or simply feeling the grass, dirt or sand under bare feet. The Japanese have a term, mono no aware, for that sublime moment of perfection just before it fades. Sometimes it translates as sensitivity or awareness of impermanent things. It could, for instance, refer to the beauty of cherry blossoms in full bloom; the cherry trees will blossom again next year, but we do not always have a chance to see them again. Everyday distractions can cause us to forget to slow down to enjoy moments. The secret to sublime living is to pay close attention to the sweet pleasures of life, no matter how small, and savor them before they pass. There is no way to know which weather-perfect day will be the last before the season shifts. Enjoying such a fleeting, sublime moment may mean discarding the day’s plans, but the delights of life do not always come around again. How easy it is to let the mind wander and forget to focus on the pleasure of an experience and the joys that life offers. We’re in danger of missing out on sublime living when we constantly prioritize what “has to be done” instead of that which is most valued. Soon, it may seem as if the stories of our lives are being written by someone else. We forget our power to be our own storyteller and to mindfully engage in how we spend every hour. Dis-

A Path of Pure Inspiration by Dale Bruder

Happy Birthday Mevlana

T

he life of a working artist takes many side roads. Some are distractions, others, new pathways through creations’ terrain. Flora Layla’s roads taken moved through building recording studios with Richard Alderson and Jose Feliciano to raising orchids and chrysanthemums in a third-world countryside. Sans Peace Corp help, Layla and crew built green houses, an irrigation dam, clean water system, a covered bridge and a road, and fought off armed bandits who wanted to take over, while always painting. “Every day, I go to the place where painting creates me,” explains Layla. The artist’s resilience shines through. “I’m surrounded by life’s treasures of 30

colors vibrating, rich smells and sounds, energy emitting from all of life.” Layla surrounds herself with visionaries doing breakthrough work. Mayan elders from Chiapas, Mexico showed her and Alderson how to build ancient musical instruments and assisted in recording Sacred Music of the Mayans that was accepted into the Smithsonian Library. “An artist is always working on their art—always operating on all cylinders,” Layla says. Two artist residencies—the first in Chiapas, the second in Konyu, Turkey— both permeated with ancient cultures and provided places where painting created Flora Layla. She added to the cultural treasure with a mural at the Na Balom Museum, in Chiapas, and an exhibit at the Mevlana Mausoleum, in Konyu, honoring the mystic Sufi poet and founder of the Whirling Dervish order. Layla established her studio in Tucson during the early 1980s, when the town was bursting with New West modernization and fighting Californication. In her mid-life years, the artist pursued

a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona, eventually graduating magna cum laude. She has sustained a gallery presence since 1983. A well-known artist in the community, Layla’s work can be found in broad venues from Hana’s Salon, in Palamino Plaza, to Solar Culture, on Toole. Her abstract expressionist oil paintings vibrate with color and ethereal images. A single-color palette flows, respecting boundaries that send the eye ever into new dimensions. “Painting is like reading a good book, always with ourselves. To be with all. Evolving, penetrating to the depths and surrounding us in its subtle levels. Layer upon layer of infinite possibilities manifesting. Waves of deep concentration and focus behind each brush stroke.” She whispers as though a secret, “I get to know their relations from inside out.” The large canvas “Man in the Mountain” draws one into a suspenseful story, unfolding in time and space. “This painting excites and stimulates me, expressing myself from inside out. Pure inspiration motivates me to be creative with my painting to the sound of Earth’s heartbeat,” says Layla. Hoof beats shake the earth as the story unfolds before the viewer’s eye. Layla lives her credo, constantly exploring new mediums, returning to artistic forms she’s used before, seeking technique and innovation for her creative expression. Exploring lapidary techniques with the jeweler known as Coyote, returning to an earlier passion of sculpture this time with George Penaloza at the TMA pottery studio. “Being an artist is a transcendental reality, capturing a moment in time in line, form and colors, forming a reality with many

subtle levels of discovery and life’s blissful rapture,” she says. The weight of her achievements hangs lightly on Layla. Paintings, murals and audio recordings in museums’ permanent collections, numerous grants and awards, video art, films and broadcast productions, exhibitions, books of paintings and poems and, of course, her legacy in Chiapas. “I’m thinking about returning to Chiapas—a fresh perspective, materials and techniques to explore,” the artist muses. Returning to the present and the practicality of the moment, “I’d like Mr. Etherton to see my work, put it in a gallery.” Always working, ever on all cylinders, she turns to the sketches on the table by her easel, moves into her self and the pure inspiration that guides her. Treating Autism

NATURALLY Plus Strategies for Prevention by Meredith Montgomery

I

n The Autism Revolution, Pediatric Neurologist and Neuroscientist Martha Herbert approaches autism as a wholebody condition that can improve, rather than be a static, lifelong genetic brain disorder. “It’s the way the brain is shifted into acting when faced with a combination of stressors—some, but not all of which are genetic—at a vulnerable point in development,” says Herbert. Non-genetic challenges can come from the immune system, nutrition, the environment and stress. “Addressing them can make a profound difference in the condition; maybe even turning it around.” Herbert directs the Treatment Research and Neuroscience Evaluation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (TRANSCEND) program at a joint Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts General Hospital Medical Imaging facility. “While autism is often thought of as a genetic disorder, it’s the result of a gene-environment interaction where genes are corrupted,” explains Psychiatrist Robert Hendren, who is currently partnering in developing the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurodevelopmental Disorders at the University of California, San Francisco. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability, now affecting one in 68 children and one in 42 boys. Autism Speaks (AutismSpeaks.org) defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a group of complex brain development disorders characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. 32

Prevention

Many experts agree that in some cases, autism can be prevented. “Prevention needs to start early—preconception is ideal,” says Dr. Kenneth A. Bock, of Bock Integrative Medicine, in New York, and author of Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies. Emphasizing omega-3 essential fatty acids, folic acid and probiotics during pregnancy can be beneficial, and it’s important to avoid iron deficiency, which has been tied to higher rates of autism, Hendren counsels. Results from a recent University of California, Davis study published in Environmental Health Perspectives reveals increased rates of autism among children of women that live close to pesticide-treated fields during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Hendren says, “Living near heavily sprayed fields can be very detrimental. Living close to freeways or downwind of coal-fired power plants is also associated with autism.” If heavy metal toxicity in blood is confirmed, chelation therapy is often used to remove metals, although Hendren advises against using it for the general treatment of ASD. “Chelators pull out mercury, along with other metals, a process that can be harmful. Instead, think about diet and nutritional supplements that can help detoxify the body more safely,” he explains.

Experts agree that a natural foundation for health begins with breastfeeding infants to support natural immunity, and then ensuring children’s diets are rich in nutrients at all ages. Bock says, “It’s not enough to detoxify, we have to remove and prevent exposure to neurodevelopmental toxins.” Herbert suggests avoiding toxic household products, electromagnetic exposure from devices such as cell phones and baby monitors, which can lead to stress, sleep disruption and cell health problems, as well as antibiotic overuse, which can disrupt the gut microbiome, increasing vulnerability to exposure to other harmful chemicals. Herbert notes some parents observe that their child became autistic after a vaccination but there are also autistic children that are vaccine-free; still others become so after facing other stresses such as illness or trauma. “We need to focus on the underlying vulnerabilities and keep children strong and resilient so they can handle life’s challenges to their health and immune systems,” she says.

Safeguard Resilience

Currently, the only treatment that has been proven to consistently improve the core symptoms of ASD is behavioral therapy designed to foster language, socialization and academic skills. While effective, this approach is time- and staff-intensive. With the rise and prevalence of autism in the past decade, more parents are turning to complementary and alternative treatments (CAM). Hendren reports that the best researched and safest CAM therapies for treating autism

Relax your attachment to expectations and realize that your child sees, hears and feels the world differently than you. Broaden your perspective and make every choice a healthy choice. ~Martha Herbert include melatonin to improve sleep, omega-3 fatty acids to ease hyperactivity and possibly improve socialization, multivitamins to supplement a limited diet or poor appetite and methyl B12 injections to protect against oxidative stress. Massage therapy has also proven effective in increasing connectivity with others and reducing over-arousal, while reducing ASD symptoms. Research remains in its infancy, but other CAMs deemed acceptable for a professionally monitored trial include B6 and magnesium supplements to correct metabolic aberration, folic acid for improvements in core symptoms, probiotics to ease gastrointestinal distress and iron supplementation for a deficiency. Although clear benefits have yet to be backed by scientific evidence, many parents of children with ASD report that behavior improves with a diet free

of the proteins gluten (found in wheat, barley and rye) and casein (found in dairy). Other parent-endorsed diets include anti-yeast, anti-hyperglycemia, specific carbohydrate, low-oxalate and specific food reaction regimens. A review article in the journal Autism Research and Treatment notes that acupuncture, exercise, and music- and animal-assisted therapy have all been reported as helping to reduce a variety of ASD functional and behavioral symptoms. From sound-dampening headphones that offset loud noises to structuring the environment to anticipate transitions, removing stressors can help reduce the debilitating characteristics of ASD. “This improves abilities to learn and interact with others, but we also don’t want to shelter them from having a chance to learn the rules of social interaction in real-world situations,” advises Hendren. Because autism is a heterogeneous disorder with numerous subtypes, the best individualized combination of treatments can be challenging to identify and can often change throughout one’s life. Bock reminds families that even with a successful treatment plan, “A parent’s love is the final element that brings these recovering children out of darkness into light.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLiving HealthyPlanet.com).

Bio-Touch Offers Autism Workshop

I

n keeping with its new program of presenting monthly workshops on specific health conditions, the Bio-Touch organization will focus on autism in October. Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction, developmental language and communication skills, combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., October 27, at the Bio-Touch Center, in Tucson. Workshop participants will learn and practice specific touch points on the body, discovering how BioTouch can help alleviate the severity of symptoms associated with ASD. Workshops are offered the fourth Thursday of each month, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bio-Touch Center, in Tucson. Massage therapists receive two continuing education credits for each workshop attended. Cost: $15 for public, $10 for IFBM members. Location: 5634 E. Pima St., Tucson. For more information or to sign up for a workshop, call 520-323-7951 or visit JustTouch.com. See ad, page 21.

Autism and Homeopathy by Melanie Chimes

A

utism is the single most common permanent, pervasive developmental disability affecting our children today. Approximately 1.5 percent of all school-aged children today are found to have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This means that at least one child in every second elementary school classroom will live with this condition. Even if a child does not have autism, it is very likely that they will be affected by association. The cause of autism is not clearly understood. The rapid rise in cases cannot be explained by genetics alone. There is likely a combination of widespread, external factors that pregnant mothers and infants are being exposed to that is precipitating this condition. There is no one test for ASD. The diagnosis is made on a collection symptoms relating to impaired social ability,

communication skills, behaviors and sensory or motor functions. These impairments may consist of: delays in language, or losing speech; repetition of words and phrases (echolalia) or movements, like hand flapping; missing social cues and avoiding eye contact; avoiding conversation, preferring inanimate objects to people; difficulty integrating sensations like pain, light, sound, crowds, touch; repetitive behaviors and ritualized activities; rigid behavior and difficulty in coping with change; fixations or obsessions; and awkwardness, or delayed development of fine and gross motor skills. Because of these impairments, people with ASD often find the demands of everyday life overwhelming. They frequently experience anxiety, confusion and frustration, which is often outwardly expressed as stubbornness, aggression, disruptive behavior and “meltdowns”. Autism not only affects the child, but every aspect of family life and every family member. Combining conventional management like speech therapy, occupational therapy, nutritional support and behavioral management, along with homeopathy, can provide the maximum benefit to these kids. Homeopathy is completely safe and nontoxic, which is especially helpful in treating autistic children, as they are often hypersensitive to conventional medication. Homeopathy treats the child as a whole—not only the isolated symptoms of autism. During the homeopathic evaluation, a homeopath will explore in depth the physical and mental constitution of the patient, past medical history, medical history of parents, information about

pregnancy and vaccination, and exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and toxins. In addition, the exact peculiarities and unique aspects of each child’s autistic features are essential to choosing the correct homeopathic medication. It is essential to distinguish the features that make this child’s case different, and filter out from what is common to most children, as it is these specific characteristics that lead to the correct selection of the homeopathic medication. It has been found that children respond very favorably to homeopathy over time. Often, parents, occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech therapists will report that an autistic individual’s progress is greatly accelerated after starting homeopathic treatment. The improvements seen regularly are less rigidity, fewer “meltdowns”, accelerated learning, better relations with family and peers, acquisition of toileting skills, improved sleep, less anxiety, broader food choices and much relief for family members. Every child is different, of course, and results vary depending on severity, complexity of health issues and age of beginning treatment. The younger the child, the more rapid and broader response can be expected, but even autistic adults benefit from treatment. When a family has a child with autism, it is likely that there is an increased latent vulnerability within the family—in homeopathic terms, a miasm—that may be expressed in subsequent children. Homeopathy can help with this also, and it is often recommended that siblings and parents also participate in homeopathic treatment. Dr. Melanie Chimes M.D., MD(H), CCH, is a boardcertified pediatrician and doctor of homeopathy, practicing at Arizona Homeopathy Center, located at 1643 N. Alvernon Way, Ste. 102, in Tucson. She received her medical degree in 1985 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and graduated from the American Medical College of Homeopathy in 2002. Integrative Pediatric Care for the Developing Child by Sharon McDonough-Means

I

ntegrative developmental pediatric care is healing-oriented care for the whole child and family—body, mind and spirit. It is health care for children with disabling conditions, provided by a developmental pediatrician within which all appropriate conventional and non-conventional therapeutic approaches may be used. The focus of care is understanding (how and why a child works the way he/she does) and empowering management (helping the child to be the very best he/she can be). The hope and goal are mindful transformation of the way daily life unfolds and the joy of empowered self-care, which is uplifting and fun. Children and their families come with a wide range of concerns: delay in early development, including motor and speech-communication difficulties; behavior concerns, including sensory aversions, sleep disturbance and social problems; digestive and growth issues; concern for autistic disorder; problems with learning or producing work at school; and specific conditions such as cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, abuse and neglect. A most helpful perspective sees child behavior as an indicator of his/her overall functioning—the “tip of the iceberg”. The focus of evaluation and care then becomes “the iceberg”—or the real causes that underlie the more visible behavior—stresses from environment, physical health, developmental abilities and spiritual-emotional issues. This avoids the behavioral “label” becoming the sole focus of treatment, an approach which is often much less effective—putting on a Band-Aid rather than removing the cause of the injury. Care begins with a comprehensive developmental evaluation of each child to understand their unique developmental strengths and weaknesses, the effect of any physical health stresses past or present, and develops a better understanding of their behavior. This understanding is developed with parents, along with plentiful resources and guidance for the child and family to alleviate the stresses and improve all aspects of functioning. Management may include biomedical care—the profound inter-relationship of genetic vulnerabilities, environmental stressors/toxins and the body’s metabolic and nutritional functioning and impact upon the whole-person. Sharon McDonough-Means, M.D., is actively practicing in Tucson as an integrative developmental pediatrician, and is also engaged in pediatric integrative medicine research. The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.

Causes of Iodine Deficiency

Radiation

Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation

Low-Sodium Diets

Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion

Iodized Table Salt

Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air

Bromine

A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid

Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil

A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.

What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.
