letterfrompublisher I find one of the most comforting things on a gray and blah winter day can be the wonderful aromas of a soul-satisfying pot of soup simmering over a low flame on the stove. The bouquet of soup instantly warms my spirit and brings back a flood of childhood memories. My dad loved to make soups and breads and we often cooked together on weekends churning out beef stew, minestrone, chili and split pea with ham hocks. We’d make bread in a coffee can and enormous gooey cinnamon rolls. No matter the contents of the bowl, my dad’s soups were made to nourish and warm the belly. There was nothing like warm soup and freshly baked bread on a cold winter’s day in the Midwest. This was also easy, nourishing time with my dad, him sharing his cooking wisdom and we soaking all of it in—like being wrapped in a big cuddy blanket with nowhere to go and no need to rush. So, whether it’s a result of the way I was raised or the product of loving to cook, we enjoy a lot of soup in our house, both at home and out. We love both cooked and uncooked variations. Soups have surpassed the typical varieties of my childhood to include fruits, a whole range of summer soups, dairy and gluten free options. Many draw on other cultures and traditions. Oh, and what we can do with our blenders! Currently, I have a recipe pulled and on the counter for ”pear soup with curried pecans.” Despite the many options, vegetable soup remains one of my favorites. A simple veggie soup needn’t be difficult. Gather the pot, a sharp knife and cutting board, a veggie brush (the skins hold a lot of nutrients you lose when you peel a carrot) and a couple of bowls to hold your chopped ingredients. Clean your veggies. Smash, peel and chop a couple of garlic cloves. Mince up some leek, carrot and celery (save the leaves!). Then have fun chopping what you like—daikon radish, turnip, sweet potato, yellow beet, rutabaga, celeriac, zucchini, etc. Vary the cuts for texture and balance. Ribbon-cut some leafy greens like spinach or kale. Cook up some beans or use canned. Save time with low sodium veggie broth and canned tomatoes. Add a grain if you like. Use lots of dried herbs—basil, oregano, thyme and rosemary. Get it all prepped and ready to go before you start cooking. Then build your masterpiece. The most flavorful soups are “layered.” Add, salt and sauté veggies by cooking time (carrots and celery are typically always first). Dried herbs can go in with the oil, with the layers of vegetables and at the end. Cooked beans go in later. Toss in fresh celery and spinach leaves right before serving to maintain flavor and brilliant color. If you can, invest in a few colorful soup bowls to add more interest to your meal. Before you dip your spoon, close your eyes, breathe in the heady aroma and smile to yourself. With these warming thoughts, we’d like to welcome you to a new year of Natural Awakenings. We look forward to bringing you fresh ideas to inspire and motivate you toward a more healthful, sustainable and rewarding life in 2013. Here’s to the New Year, and here’s to you! Holly

Got Belly Fat?

B

elly fat is not only a cosmetic issue, but also a serious health threat. “A big waist line puts you at an increased risk for many health problems—diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke,” says Robert Eckel, M.D., president of the American Heart Association. In fact you can even be “skinny fat,” showing no external signs of belly fat, yet hidden around the internal organs can be toxic belly fat, placing you at a higher risk for some diseases. Belly fat can actually act as an active “organ” in the body, producing hormones and inflammatory substances that dump into the liver and muscles. This can trigger a sequence of changes increasing LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Insulin can become less active controlling blood sugar. Fats get into the blood stream and can lead to diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and more. Belly fat is an indicator of metabolic syndrome, a series of imbalances that include elevated blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. Although belly fat affects men more than women, fat can accumulate in a female body around the hips and thighs before menopause. After that time, it tends to accumulate around the belly. Abdominal fat is more dangerous than fat around the buttocks and thigh area. In fact, women are about five times more likely to die of heart disease if they have a big waist and high blood fats. Fat cells can break down and release cell-proliferating agents, which may be why obesity is a risk for some cancers. Obesity may be a high risk factor in post-menopausal breast cancer. Belly fat can produce also more estrogens than is necessary.

Dr. John R. Keifer, DC, is presenting a series of free lectures to educate others on highly effective programs that can reduce belly fat and lower the risk of chronic diseases. For more information, call 520-577-1717 or visit bellyfataz.com (enter into left upper address bar). See ad on page 16.

Cloth Diaper Service Returns to Tucson

W

ith Sun Sprout Cloth Diaper Delivery Service, moms can get clean cotton diapers delivered to their door every week; just leave the old ones out for pick-up. They aren’t the same diapers your grandmother used, either. Modern cloth diapers are soft and absorbent and don’t require safety pins. Gentle ‘Snappies Diaper Fasteners’ hold the baby’s diaper closed. Waterproof diaper covers keep you safe from accidents, too. Diaper services have been serving families in many American cities for decades and now they are making a comeback because parents are looking for environmentally conscientious alternatives to single-use disposable diapers, which use 20 times more raw materials, three times more energy, two times more water and 60 times more waste than cloth diapers. Sun Sprout washers and dryers are very efficient and use less water and energy per diaper than if you were to wash them yourself at home. For more information or to set up service, call 520-351-2370 or visit www.SunSprout.us. See ad on Page 15.

More Than Haircare at ProjekK

P

rojekK hair studio is the vision of owner/stylist Kathie Takach, who wanted her workplace to be the ideal haven. Open since June, this cozy salon in the courtyard of Placita de la Luna, a community of artists, is aromatic with pine, rosemary, lavender and oils used in aromatherapy. Although Takach trained at the Vidal Sassoon school, her haircuts are freer, using natural textures to work with the entire person. The cuts grow out well and need minimal styling. Takach wanted projekK to reflect the concept of “do no harm.” All supplies are non-toxic and earth-friendly. There is no chemical smell or products containing ammonia, because the organic color systems originate from roots and plants. The staff and clients do not suffer the myriad health complaints of days gone by. This is modern organic hairdressing, where each style is sculpted and clients emerge feeling refreshed.

UV Light Cleans The Big Apple’s Water Supply New York City has opened the world’s largest water disinfection plant, using ultraviolet (UV) light as a sanitizing agent to eliminate cryptosporidium, giardia and other pathogenic microorganisms that can cause nausea, cramps, diarrhea and more serious ailments. Fifty-six massive UV units will neutralize waterborne pathogens in all drinking water derived from the city’s major sources. The Catskill and the Delaware water supply systems, completed in 1927 and 1967, respectively, provide about 90 percent of the city’s water. The facility will process up to 9 billion liters daily, adding a second layer of sanitation to the city’s traditional chlorine treatment. While cryptosporidium is highly resistant to chlorine, UV has proved effective at controlling the parasite. Adenovirus is resistant to UV disinfection, but can be killed using chlorine. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that if unfiltered surface water treatment systems don’t filter drinking water, another barrier for microorganisms besides chlorine treatment needs to be installed. The alternative to UV would have been to build a much more expensive filtration facility that passes drinking water through a series of porous materials such as layers of sand, gravel and charcoal to remove chemicals, hazardous materials and toxins. Great Lakes Under Siege by Global Warming Don Scavia, director of the University of Michigan Graham Sustainability Institute, stated in a regional leaders’ conference that climate change is aggravating the effects of devastating algae blooms in the Great Lakes by increasing the intensity of spring rains that wash phosphorus into the water. Rampant algae levels degrade water quality because as algae decompose, oxygen levels can drop low enough to kill fish. After the United States and Canada signed the initial Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement in 1972, many local governments banned detergents containing phosphorus and the algae problem faded, but it has returned in the past decade. Analysts note that while the practice of planting crops without plowing the ground may help prevent erosion, it leaves high concentrations of fertilizer phosphorus in the upper layers of soil, where it easily runs off into waterways. A task force of academic and government experts has recommended more than 50 helpful practices, including providing funding and technical assistance for phosphorus reduction projects; authorizing state regulators to require pollution reduction measures in stressed watersheds; and working with farmers and equipment manufacturers to develop fertilizer application methods that avoid runoff. Reinventing the Wheel by Jon D’Auria

Dr. Steven Swidler and his team break the mold of traditional dentistry with remarkable innovations in holistic care and a diverse new wellness center.

A

lthough the acronym DDS that follows his name stands for doctor of dental surgery, Dr. Steven Swidler, of Medicine Wheel Dental and Wellness Center, in Tucson, is not your typical dentist. While he began his practice as a traditional dentist 40 years ago, the evolution and advancements in his field led him down the less-traveled road of holistic dentistry. After changing his course of study, Swidler has become one of the most well-known holistic/biologic dentists in the country. His innovations and inventions are considered cutting-edge developments in the field. His research on how to keep a tooth alive and the subsequent development of a breakthrough root canal alternative, along with his special mercury-filling removal process and his patented “percussion table”, are all examples of his commitment to the overall health of the patient, rather than just their teeth. “Holistic dentistry takes into account that there is so much

16

Tucson

more than the tooth or the tooth problem. The whole body can be affected,” explains Swidler. “There’s a whole circuitry that aligns each tooth with a specific region of our bodies, and it’s truly amazing what we may be overlooking if this understanding is not Dr. Steven Swidler taken into account. For instance, we consider the individual’s body alignment long before we get into crowns, bridges or other permanent restorations. We’re used to a healthcare system that is really an illness care system, turning people to drugs and surgeries first. That’s just not our practice.” Walking into Northwest Tucson’s Medicine Wheel Dental and Wellness Center feels more like entering a resort than it does a traditional dental office. The gorgeous desert plains rise into the dramatic mountains of the west, and the barren dirt road that leads to the property seems to populate more creatures than cars or human traffic. Numerous staff members greet patients when they pass through the adobe walls of the main complex. The comfortable and serene interior is drastically different from the usual dental facility. Hot herbal tea or spring water are offered, and state-of-the-art massage chairs invite patients to relax as they pass time in this Southwest Zen setting, located in the wellness center. The atmosphere is not specific to dental only, which was exactly the intention from the beginning. “Our goal is to make our clients comfortable in their dental experience, and that comes down to all of the little details–from the environment here to the care of our staff and most importantly, to the treatment and service we provide our patients, says Swidler. “We strive toward high-level wellness, which means that a person is running on all cylinders. Depending on the individual, it is not uncommon for us to look at how you feel physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to get an idea of your overall state. If I can figure out where the person is on that spectrum and truly listen to them, then I can treat them as a whole. We work with a client’s doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists or other members of their healthcare team to strive toward their highest good. While dental is a critical piece to the puzzle of overall wellness, for us it’s not just about teeth and gums. Swidler and his staff use cleaner and more bio-compatible alternatives whenever possible to replace certain standard methods of dentistry that may have a negative impact on health. For example, silver fillings in many people’s mouths are comprised of 50 percent mercury, or roughly the same amount found in a thermometer. Mercury is odorless and vaporizes at room temperature,

so this virtually undetectable substance can easily enter the bloodstream when inhaled. Swidler and the dentists at Medicine Wheel offer a very specific method of removing such fillings and replacing them with a non-toxic alternative. After a breakthrough discovery in 1997, Swidler has been able to provide a potential alternative to the often-dreaded root canal endured by many patients with a non-surgical option where teeth are kept alive. “I was in Japan and I came across this amazing material that contained 70 natural antioxidants that was being used for medicine,” explains Swidler. “After I returned home, a patient came to me and told me her tooth was killing her, but that she didn’t want a root canal. I thought about this material and I cleaned her tooth out, applied this all-natural substance, and it stopped the bleeding, which does not typically happen. Then I put a base and a filling on the tooth, gave her numbers for an oral surgeon and a root canal specialist. I told her to see one of them the next day and call me to let me know how it went. I didn’t hear from her the next day, so I called her that afternoon. I asked where she went. She told me, “Nowhere,” because it was no longer hurting her. I was so amazed. It’s a food-grade substance and there are no negative side effects from it. It’s as close to “liquid light” as anything I’ve ever found. While very specific circumstances must be in place for this process to be an option, when we use this proprietary method with a tooth during the early stages of a problem, we save over 70 percent of those teeth. Other dental processes only save 1 to 2 percent of teeth in the same condition. In addition to a total dental health approach, Swidler has expanded Medicine Wheel by adding a wellness center offering natural, holistic treatments that go beyond the typical scope of dentistry. Patients can experience a wide range of services, including Cranial Sacral Therapy, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, hot stone massage, Rosen method bodywork, foot reflexology, acupuncture, moxibustion, acupressure, auricular therapy, aromatherapy, Gua Sha, therapeutic yoga flow and yin yoga classes, healthy cooking classes and eating demonstrations, nutritional consulting and coaching, IntenSati workouts and Swidler’s own percussion table. “Secretly, I was always waiting for someone to build a wonderful healing center that I could practice dentistry at like other state of-the-art healing and wellness centers overseas, but it never really happened,” says Swidler. “Over time, I’ve worked with many specialists who have had an interest in a facility that merges a lot of different practices together under one roof. The practitioners have to have all the right gifts and a good heart. This peaceful environment allows a person to relax and opens them up to new possibilities within the dental and healthcare fields. Swidler’s patented percussion table, which has taken well over 10 years to fully develop, is drawing a lot of attention and excitement from doctors and practitioners that want to use this breakthrough technology. The table utilizes vibrational therapy to unwind soft tissue strain patterns and injuries and promote body alignment, and can alter a patient’s physiology. “If you picture each injury in your body as a twist on a telephone cord, we typically use treatments that take that cord and manually uncurl it with force. The percussion table takes the phone cord and just dangles it effortlessly to uncurl it,” explains Swidler. “It uses frequency and amplitude to take those injuries out of the body faster than anything else that I have seen. It helps alleviate chronic pain by balancing the body as a whole. The percussion table feels like you’re lying down in a sleeper car of an old-time train. If the therapist who puts you on the

table feels a tight muscle or impacted area of your body, they’ll tune the frequency and amplitude until that area’s restrictions melt away. The connective tissue injuries start unwinding all over the body and our therapist is able to do much more effective bodywork as they are dealing with much more of the core issues at hand. While holistic treatments, natural lifestyles and alternative medicines are growing increasingly popular, Swidler remains an innovator and inspiration in his field. With a deeply spiritual outlook on his life and personal practices and a warm, grounded demeanor, he strives to help others through education and support around healthy lifestyle decisions. He and his team of professionals take pride in co-creating a higher level of health, one check-up at a time. “This is my 40th year of dentistry, but every day is still something new to me,” says Swidler. “When my wife passed away, what saved me was being able to go in with a patient and be entirely present with them. I put all of my focus and intention into each patient. Every relationship is a two-way street. I’m not here to be put on a pedestal, I’m here to help you and in doing so, you help me. I’m going to treat every patient like one of my kids, my friend or parent, and give them the highest care and as much of my energy as possible.” Medicine Wheel Dental and Wellness Center is located at 4650 W. Peppermint: The Medicinal, Culinary, Aromatic Herb by Dale Bruder

T

wo years ago, a Michigan mint farmer came to southern Arizona on a whim and stayed to plant roots here—mint roots, that is. Jim Crosby, aka Peppermint Jim Crosby “Peppermint Jim,” a fourth-generation mint farmer, found a receptive climate; both for growing mint and marketing the essential oil he distills from the leaves. A passionate proselytizer of the benefits of mint and free enterprise, Crosby is driven to establish a community of growers in the Sonoran Desert region to supply his distillery. Informed by mythic memories of his great-grandfather Crosby establishing the family mint farm in southeastern Michigan a century ago, this 21st-century Crosby has added controlling the production and distribution of the essential oils through his proprietary knowledge and artesian distillery. “I see large and small farmers planting and harvesting Peppermint Jim mint stock,” Crosby smiles, the refreshing aroma of mint in the air around him, “We have a high standard of providing pure, undiluted oil and products that deliver essential oils, fragrance, salves and culinary herbs.” Crosby describes his economic plan of growers supplying the expanding markets for Peppermint Jim products. “Growers committing fields to our rootstock becomes more economically viable for everyone up and down the line because of the quality and desirability of our products.” Mints are versatile, easy-to-grow herbs with a colorful mythological, medicinal and culinary history. Mint was known to the ancients for its many pleasant uses. The Greeks revered it as a symbol of hospitality. The Roman’s image is

18

Tucson

the nymph Minthe, transformed into a plant to be trodden on under hoof and heel by a jealous Persephone for her husband Pluto’s dalliances. Sympathetic to her plight, Pluto gave mint the cool, refreshing fragrance that fills the air when the leaves are crushed. The 18th and 19th centuries saw mint described first as a medicinal remedy, then an ingredient in food, drink and confections. The herb best known for its aroma and refreshing qualities is a flavor everyone recognizes in toothpaste, breath fresheners, cough drops and chewing gum. Mint teas, salves and sauces are also very common. There are thousands of known varieties of mint. All feature square stems, opposing leaf arrangement and flowers in tall, terminal heads of spiked or whorled arrangements. The flowers bloom purple, pink or white. Mint leaves are usually creased, serrated, round to oval and pointed at the tip.

Peppermint Jim cultivates native spearmint and black Mitchem peppermint; both true medicinal mints. The plant is propagated through rootstock, not seed, because the flowers are sterile. Crosby brought rootstock from the Michigan farm to Arizona in 2011 and is now getting four annual harvests from planted fields. Harvesting occurs when the plants have flowered. Cut and left to dry one to three days, like hay, the stalks are scooped, chopped and blown into a wagon, one acre at a time. Later, steam distills the mint oil from the leaves. An acre can give up about 400 pounds of plant matter that in good harvests, yields about three gallons of oil. In its pure distilled form, peppermint and spearmint oil is a golden yellow to clear substance that is liquid at room temperature. The oil is lighter than water, and is collected by lifting it from the top of vats of drainage during the distillation process. Peppermint plus spearmint yields menthol. The black Mitchem plant Peppermint Jim propagates has the highest menthol content and optimum oil yield. The native spearmint menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities, and is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation. At Peppermint Jim, the oils are offered in several mediums; as a lip balm, mister and a lotion, in combination with lemongrass. Medicinal recommendations include treatments for acne, arthritis, fever, insect bites, nausea and itching. The oils contain antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. A drop added to cleaning solutions, detergents and air vents provides a clean scent, attacks fungi and is effective as an insecticide. Both peppermint and spearmint can be used as flavoring in food and drink. A mojito mix and mint sauce have also been concocted. Crosby is personally committed to community building around the herb. The economic model is growing crops, distilling oils, packaging and marketing products. Where the original 20 mint farms around St Johns, Michigan, sold their oil harvest to corporate buyers, Peppermint Jim controls the plant from root to oil. He currently has seven acres under cultivation near the Tucson Mountains and is considering more acreage in the region. “Peppermint Jim is active in farmers’ markets because that’s where people go who want fresh produce, free range beef, honey and other home grown, homemade items.” Crosby says, “We support people being able to have healthy choices available, and farmers’ markets are great places for that. Peppermint Jim being present at farmers’ markets supports all growers and vendors being successful.” Growth in the two years since Peppermint Jim appeared on the Arizona scene has been phenomenal. Crosby notes, “We’ve been very careful in expanding, introducing products and establishing relationships with brick-andmortar businesses up and down the Sun Corridor and all the way from Flagstaff to Wilcox. In Tucson, Peppermint Jim can be found at the New Life Health Center, Maynard’s Market and Kitchen and The Shoppe at Civano B&B.” Crosby’s personification of “Peppermint Jim” is a mission he’s taken on with zeal. His passion is present in every interaction. Just look with your nose for peppermint in your next foray to the region’s farmers markets’ and you’ll find Peppermint Jim. What’s So New About the New Year? by Sylvia Haskvitz

Y

es, It’s time for those new years resolutions—lose weight, exercise, shed the pounds you gained over the holidays, join a health club—you may be telling yourself to toughen up, find the will power and just say no to those things that aren’t good for you. Does it seem a bit like the movie, Groundhog Day, making the same resolutions year after year, yet not much has changed? What blocks us or keeps us from creating a different outcome regarding our body, our health and exercise? How do we begin anew and hit the mark? In Judaism, during the Jewish New Year, we look at our regrets— not as a way to punish or beat ourselves, up, but rather as a way to learn from what didn’t work and to turn (tshuvah) to our best and highest selves. This may be a time to determine how to turn to our best and highest selves in this year of 2013. It may have to do with cleaning up any words or actions to be more in alignment with your values. You may want to revisit choices you made regarding your body, food and exercise. Notice what needs attention in your life, not as a way to criticize, but to focus on what support you would like to gain the clarity that would help you move forward in a way you would like. Sometimes the frustration we have is that we want someone else to make changes, because it is difficult to watch people making choices that are not supporting health and well-being. In May, when my niece graduated from high school, one of her classmates spoke, and what touched me was this. “You can’t want for someone else, you can only support them when they want for themselves.” Another way to look at this is what you want to be changed in another person may best be changed within yourself. If you focus first on yourself and make the changes you would like, you may just inspire others to do the same. Sylvia Haskvitz, MA, RD, is a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication.

Healthy Lifestyle Tweaks Surprisingly Simple Changes for Feeling Good by Kathleen Barnes

A

ll of us have heard the admonition: “Eat lots of veggies and exercise daily and you’ll live a long, healthy life.” There’s no question this advice is sound, but what about other helpfully healthy lifestyle adjustments we can make? Experts attest that doing easy things, such as going braless, walking barefoot or using a plug-in model instead of a cordless phone can all support wellness. Results range from stress relief to prevention of cancer, heart disease and other ailments often associated with aging. “Making some of the simplest changes can have far-reaching positive effects on your health,” contends Frank King, a doctor of chiropractic and naturopathic medicine, president of King Bio Natural Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina, and author of The Healing Revolution. “When we consider the huge negative effects shadowing the field of prescription drugs, it is just good sense to try things foundational to our health that are natural, inexpen-

Tucson

sive, effective and free of problematic side effects.”

Muscle Testing

“The human body is an excellent lie detector. It is the world’s most sophisticated laboratory, with more wisdom than all medical professionals put together,” says King. His favorite technique is to tap into the body’s vast wisdom using applied kinesiology, or muscle testing. “The principal is simple. When you are telling a truth or when something is good for the body, whether you are conscious of it or not, your body loosens up. When you are telling a lie or the body is rejecting something, your body tightens.” Many holistic practitioners use applied kinesiology as a diagnostic tool. An easy way to use muscle testing at home is to bend forward, fingers stretching toward the toes. Set a baseline truth by saying out loud, “My name is _______,” and notice the length of the stretch.

Then utter an untruth, like calling yourself by a different name. Most people will find their range of motion is noticeably limited in the event of an untruth or something else that is not helpful. A practical solution: Apply this technique in making any choice related to personal health.

Control Electronic Pollution Turn away from using cordless phones and turn off the Wi-Fi. Keep cell phones out of pockets and purses. Move the TV out of the bedroom. These devices emit enormous amounts of radiation, disturbing our sleep patterns, thickening our blood and causing inflammation and a number of associated diseases, according to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, an integrative cardiologist and co-author of The Great Cholesterol Myth. Recent findings of Sinatra’s research team at the University of California-Irvine, published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, confirm that physical contact with the Earth naturally thins blood. “Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events,” the researchers concluded. A recent study of animals by the Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory at Zhejiang University School of Medicine-Hangzhou, in China, shows that exposure to radio and electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) like those found in cell phones can alter some genes. An Indian study by the Bioelectromagnetic Laboratory at Jawaharlal Nehru University-New Delhi suggests that EMF exposure increases the production of free radicals in animal brains, which can lead to inflammation, cancer, heart disease and other serious diseases. Swiss research published in the journal Somnologie by University of Bern scientists shows a clear connection between radio frequencies (RF) and sleep disturbances. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admits a possible link between extensive cell phone use and exposure to RF waves and brain cancer. Sinatra calls Wi-Fi signals “the

new coronary risk factor” and warns, “Be aware that if you are on a computer at home on Wi-Fi, that is toxic to your body.” A practical solution: Use an ethernet cable to connect computers rather than wireless; switch to an old-fashioned plug-in phone with a handset attached; and stay three feet away from cell phones—never wear them. Sinatra says his research shows that men that put a cell phone in a pocket experience a reduction in testosterone within four hours.

Change Footwear In addition to unplugging from potentially harmful devices, Sinatra recommends plugging into Earth’s healing energies. “Our ancestors walked barefoot and slept on the ground. They were connected to Earth’s electrical energies that kept them balanced and healthy,” explains the co-author of Earthing. New research from the University of California-Irvine published in the Journal of Environment and Public Health explains how mod-

ergetic connection between his or her body and the Earth,” explains Sinatra. “The ground provides a subtle electric signal that governs the intricate mechanisms that help maintain health and make our bodies work, just like plugging a light into a power socket.” Taken together, the research points to many health benefits gained

Source: National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health ern lifestyles tend to separate us from the healing electrical energies of the Earth. Because we rarely walk barefoot or sleep on the ground and most people wear rubber-soled shoes that break the currents, few are benefitting from this wealth of easily accessed healing energies that benefit the heart, brain, muscles and nervous and immune systems. “Practically no one has the slightest notion of an electrical or en-

by staying connected with our home planet, which Sinatra reports in Earthing, including reduced inflammation, relief from chronic pain muscle tension and headaches, lower blood pressure and tempered hormonal swings. As a practical solution, Sinatra prescribes taking a little “vitamin G” (for grounding) every day: Walk barefoot as much as possible. Sit or lie on the ground with as much skin as possible in contact with living things such as grass, trees, pine needles or earth. During the winter, touch grounded electrical outlets or metal plumbing pipes. Also, wear comfortable, leathersoled shoes without socks indoors and out, because leather is an excellent conductor of Earth’s energies.

Ditch the Bra “Breast cancer is caused by bras,” medical anthropologist Sydney Ross Singer states unequivocally. He is coauthor of Dressed to Kill, with Soma Grismaijer, and director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease, in Pahoa, Hawaii.

24

Tucson

“Bras are designed to change the shape of a woman’s breasts to a culturally approved image,” remarks Singer. “But bras also create a pressure band between the breast and the lymph nodes, causing inflammation and swelling, and causing lymph to back up, restricting the body’s natural detoxification system.” “Cancer-causing toxins are delivered to the breast tissue by the bloodstream and are kept there by the bra,” he explains, likening the toxins to bullets. “The bra holds them in place, pointed directly at the breasts.” Singer’s research, conducted in the early 1990s, showed that women that wore bras 24/7 had a breast cancer risk 125 times that of women that never wore bras. Yet Singer’s

findings have been largely dismissed by the medical community, and bra manufacturers still offer few wire-free styles. A Harvard School of Public Health study, published in the European Journal of Cancer Care in 1991, also discovered that bra-free women had a lower rate of breast cancer. Because the results were not central to the focus of the university’s research at the time, there’s been no follow-up. A practical solution: Wear a bra as little as possible. If it is sometimes necessary, wear one without wires, and engage in regular breast massage. This can be enjoyable and is an ideal partner activity.

Hum Often Another Singer assertion is that simply humming “mmmmmmmmm” a couple of minutes a day can stimulate the thyroid and increase the production of thyroid hormones of those with an underactive thyroid. The butterfly-shaped gland wraps around the larynx, or voice box, which Singer contends is part of nature’s elegant design, meant to be stimulated by sound. The Cleveland Clinic reports that

Simple Stress Relief Resets Brain Function Using the index fingers, find two small knobs, usually about an inch above the midpoint of the eyebrows, known as the neurovascular reflex points. Rest fingers very lightly on these points until a pulse is felt. It may take several minutes. Be patient. Mentally review a current stressor using all the senses; see, feel, smell, hear and taste it. Source: Dr. Frank King, president, King Bio Natural Medicine, Asheville, NC 10 percent of the U.S. population age 65 and over suffers from hypothyroidism, with the rate in the general population between 1 and 2 percent. The condition is a special problem for women encountering perimenopause or menopause, when hormone levels can fluctuate wildly. “The medical community has considered the effect of the thyroid on the voice but not the vibratory effect of vocalization on thyroid function,” says Singer. “It stands to reason that humming, singing or quietly talking is preferred to the overstimulation of shouting or yelling.”

Adopt a Pet “Animals are among our best teachers,” says Dr. Carol Roberts, the author of Good Medicine: A Return to Common Sense, who teaches holistic care at the University of South Florida’s Morsani College of Medicine. “Animal companions give us so much more than they ask for and live in a state of unconditional, open-hearted love.” Roberts notes numerous studies that show the simple presence of a loving animal can lower our blood pressure and slow the heart rate. A CDC heart study, for example, showed subjects that had owned a cat at any time were 40 percent less likely to die of a heart attack. Japanese researchers from Azabu University, in Kanagawa-ken, found that dog owners experienced a spike in oxytocin—a neurotransmitter that helps us cope with stress—by simply meeting

their pet’s gaze. While people widely recognize that walking the dog is great exercise, other loving interactions with our pets support happiness and health, as well.

Exercise Artistic Skills Giving oneself artistic license is also healthy, advises Roberts. “Just bring a little beauty into your life, whether it’s choosing which clothing and accessories to wear, arranging a vase of table flowers or dancing to favorite music. Just do something creative every day.” Energy therapists maintain that exposure to creative activities improves circulation to the brain and thyroid; on a psychological level, it also works to improve self-confidence and selfexpression. A recent study at the University of Colorado published in the journal Palliative & Supportive Care confirmed that individual art therapy is useful in supporting cancer patients during chemotherapy. Fifty-one of the 54 participants said it helped them to relax, talk about their situation or explore and express emotions to their benefit. Roberts adds, “It’s even better if you join a group engaged in a creative activity. I think people in general do better when we come together to create something beautiful.” These experts’ prescriptions for such simple lifestyle changes have shown how commonsense adjustments in everyday living can have profound, health-altering results, with only good after effects.

No Dust on the Mirror Reflections on a Life of Conscious Wholeness

by Michael Bernard Beckwith

W

e spend a good deal of time gazing at ourselves in a mirror with the physical eye, as well as into the mirror of our mind with an analytical eye, endeavoring to size ourselves up in our own estimation, and also determining how others might evaluate us. Both of these mirrors are clouded with ego-related dust that distorts our vision. Only when we turn our gaze inward with the intuitive eye of awareness can we perceive our innate wholeness, for there is no dust on the mirror of the soul. Consider this: A consciousness of wholeness reunifies us with our authentic self, so that even during those times when we are unaware of it, our wholeness is intact and utterly dust-free—only our awareness of it is missing. When awareness returns, we live free from ego’s bondage and its ignorance-soaked history and habits. We are reunified with the reality of our being. Our daily practice is to be ever mindful—on the dot—the moment we lose sight of our true nature. Everyday experiences grace us with reminders by mentally tapping us on the shoulder and returning us to the qualities we wish to express in our interactions with our self, others and all of life. We are continually given the opportunity to reconnect with

the high vision we hold for ourselves in our mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, professional, relational and communal life structures. It serves us well to remember that we are here learning to mother our consciousness, just as the universe mothers us throughout our lifetime and beyond. Intelligence, wisdom, intuition, joy and creativity—these are the qualities we want to mother within ourselves in order to unveil our original face. As we set a conscious intention to evolve, we live as the master artists we are—creating, directing and producing our lives. The more time we set aside for meditation, contemplation and life visioning, the more we can have 20/20 vision in foresight, rather than hindsight. Through practice, we activate our intuition, clean off egoic dust and enter a more consistently clear-sighted state of mindful being. Thus we actualize our highest potential and realize our organic, enlightened consciousness. Michael Bernard Beckwith is the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, in Los Angeles, California, author of Life Visioning: A Transformative Process for Activating Your Unique Gifts and Highest Potential (Sounds True, 2011/2013), and originator of the Life Visioning process. SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT LOSS Five Secrets for Feeling Like Yourself Again by Judith Fertig

Health experts agree that many foods can play multiple roles in weight loss.

S

tarting in the 1970s, natural foods advocate and journalist Kathleen Barnes, of Brevard, North Carolina, avidly practiced vegetarianism, yet through the years she still gained weight. Searching for answers, she shared her findings in an array of books that include 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women (co-authored with Dr. Hyla Cass) and Rx from the Garden: 101 Food Cures You Can Easily Grow. “When I at last learned which key foods to add to my diet, I lost 100 pounds—and kept them off,” says Barnes. Burn fat. Foods with thermogenic properties help heat up the body and may help burn fat. “You feel a flush when you eat or drink them,” Barnes notes. Chili peppers, curry powder, horseradish, mustard, garlic, onion, wasabi, ginger, black pepper and radishes are especially good choices in cold weather, when we want to feel warm anyway. The intense flavors delivered by such foods help us to practice the principle of portion control, Chester Ku-Lea, a health and nutrition consultant in Vancouver, British Columbia, says, “Adding these foods to dishes generates a higher rate of caloric burn, and their powerful flavors prompt people to eat far less than they normally would. Plus, red, cayenne and jalapeño peppers, hot sauces and any other spicy foods are all very low in calories.” 30

Tucson

Enhance mood. We don’t want to feel hungry or deprived when trying to lose weight. The protein in turkey, chicken and cold-water fish like salmon and mackerel helps us feel more satisfied and on top of things. Barnes also suggests eating low-fat cottage cheese, avocado, wheat germ, whole-grain crackers and bananas to help increase serotonin levels and feelings of well-being. “When you crave something sweet or feel like you’re crashing mid-afternoon, that’s the time to eat a small amount of these foods to get you back on track,” she advises. Julia Ross, author of The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure, agrees.

This Mill Valley, California, nutritional psychotherapist recommends complex carbohydrates such as whole grains to keep us on an even keel during weight loss. “This means pushing away the leftover cake and eating sensible carbs to stimulate serotonin,” she says. Promote digestion. The fiber in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains helps move things along in the digestive system, making our bodies work more efficiently. Barnes favors drinking peppermint and other herbal teas and incorporating sage, dill, oregano and other herbs in savory dishes to aid digestion. According to a recent University of Illinois study, soluble fiber found in oat bran, fruits, vegetables and nuts not only facilitates digestion, but also supports the immune system. Professor Gregory Freund, who teaches at the university’s medical school in Champaign, explains, “Soluble fiber changes the personality of immune cells—they go from being pro-inflammatory, angry cells to antiinflammatory, healing cells that help us recover faster from infection.” Feel full. Hunger pangs can derail anyone’s best efforts to eat better. Barnes learned that liquids, including up to two quarts of water a day, help retain a satisfied feeling. In cooler months, she makes soups that incorporate leafy green vegetables, onion, garlic, chili peppers and herbs. An apple a day might keep the doctor away— and help in other ways, as well. “Apples have a high water content and are packed with fiber, two factors that leave you satiated,” says Keren Gilbert, a registered dietitian and

founder of Decision Nutrition, in Great Neck, New York. “For a tasty protein-packed snack, top apple slices with natural almond butter.” Accept treats. Leaving room for a treat, like a piece of fine chocolate, can leave us feeling satisfied rather than stuffed, says Katherine Harvey, a registered dietitian in Kansas City, Missouri. Indulging in a little sweet treat from time to time reinforces the perception that eating right can be simple and pleasurable, says Barnes. In cold months, she likes to bake apples sweetened with Stevia and cinnamon, or poach pears in fruit juice and spices. She might break open a pomegranate and slowly munch each ruby-colored seed, or stop at a coffee shop to sip a latte made with low-fat milk. Barnes’ evolved natural foods strategy has helped her maintain a desirable weight for many years now. “Sustainable weight loss involves sustainable eating,” she says, “finding healthy foods that we can enjoy for the rest of our lives.” Award-winning cookbook author Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFood AndLifestyle.blogspot.com.

Bonus Diet Tips Be mindful. Hunger may be more mental or emotional, rather than physical, says nutritionist Katherine Harvey. “Becoming more aware of where in our bodies we’re feeling hungry—our heads, chests or stomachs—can help us discern if we’re eating out of boredom, emotional distress or true physical need.” Celebrate each meal. If we can focus on each bite and do nothing else—no reading, watching TV or working at our desk—we’ll eat less, says health writer Kathleen Barnes. “It helps our focus to bless our food, the people who grew it, where it came from and the good work it is doing in our bodies.” Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is important. To keep track of her allotted two quarts of water a day, Barnes drinks it from a two-quart canning jar.

Increasing Collaboration Through Empathy by Suzie Agrillo Marie Miyashiro is passionate about empathy. A popular speaker and coach for teams with the Elucity Network, an empathy-based consulting and training group, she has written The Empathy Factor, an informative book with a proven method for developing and practicing empathy as a workplace skill. Her insights focus on how a compassionate workplace is a path to greater productivity and greater profits. The book is written in an easy-to-understand style that incorporates case studies, anecdotal examples from her work experience and insights gained from being a Non Violent Communication trainer and being the developer of the Integrated Clarity process for workplaces. Her research includes many insightful, educational and entertaining quotes from some of the leading experts in the field. By utilizing her vast knowledge of the subject, Miyashiro demystifies the process of connecting with others. One of the most critical elements of empathy is listening. Miyashiro suggests that, “Sometimes ‘doing something’ for people to meet their needs may involve just listening to them with deep empathic connection, guessing their feelings and needs either silently or out loud.” Another key to empathy is intention. It is important to be conscious of your intent to connect with another person in order to successfully implement your empathy skills. A third factor in successful empathic communication is to make an observation without making a judgment, interpretation or evaluation. The book quotes Indian philosopher J. Krishnamurti on this subject. “Observation without evaluating is the highest form of human intelligence.” The essence of empathy is the metaphor of walking in someone else’s shoes. Miyashiro says, “Empathetic connection is built around guessing someone’s feelings and needs, rather than knowing them.” The skills in the book focus on three types of empathy: self-empathy, empathy for co-workers and empathy with customers. They can also be used with family, friends and anyone else you interact with in the course of your day. Miyashiro encourages her readers to practice empathy skills at home. “Do try this at home. Since I’ve been using NVC/IC in my work, I’ve been pleasantly surprised and inspired by how many of my clients tell me that learning these concepts in their workplace is also affecting those they love at home in a way that all find more satisfying and connecting.” One of Miyashiro’s clients was 32

ecstatic that after his training, he was finally able to communicate with his 17-year-old daughter. Anyone can develop empathy and learn to be empathetic, and the purpose of the book is to cultivate this skill. The quality of our connections can meet critical human needs such as trust, respect, autonomy, understanding and meaning. Learning and cultivating the skills from The Empathy Factor may result in a life-changing experience, both personally and professionally. According to Miyashiro, “This practice creates transformation from the inside-out, which leads to both individual and organizational evolution toward increasing levels of harmony and success. Miyashiro provides business outreach, strategic planning, organization development, executive team development and employee relations training for private and public sector organizations, including nonprofits. With more than 28 years of consulting experience, she has received more than two dozen awards for her communication and partnership programs. Contact Miyashiro at EmpathyFactorAtWork.com. Her book is also available at EmpathyFactorAtWork.com/book. Suzie Agrillo is a writer based in Tucson since 1971. See ad on page 10.

health needs. Numerous studies attest that many diseases, especially in older adults, are caused by a deficiency of certain vitamins or minerals. For example, pernicious anemia, common in adults over the age of 60, is due to a long-term deficiency of vitamin B12. The condition often proved fatal until researchers discovered that taking such supplements could effectively treat it. Another common nutritional deficiency disease among aging adults is osteoporosis, a loss of bone minerals that often leads to fractures. Its primary cause is chronic deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D levels. Final Word Although conflicting information continues to circulate, abundant scientific evidence verifies that commonsense use of vitamin and mineral supplements is safe and usually helpful. The recommendation is to take enough, but not too much, of a deficiency-specific supplement, along with nutritious foods, in order to achieve a normal balance. A 2009 report by the U.S. National Poison Data System indicated that the number of serious adverse events that year from the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbal supplements was extremely low, with no related U.S. deaths. Many natural healthcare experts, including naturopaths, nutritionists and dieticians, conclude that supplements are useful and in some cases, necessary, especially when treating a significant nutrient or hormonal deficiency. It’s wise to consult a knowledgeable professional before buying the antioxidant du jour mentioned by a friend from the gym. James Occhiogrosso, a natural health practitioner and master herbalist, specializes in salivary hormone testing and natural hormone balancing for men and women. DO YOU

SLEEP GREAT EVERY NIGHT?

No?

Maybe you have Sleep Apnea, Restless Legs or Leg Cramps? What about the person you sleep with?

Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from Sleep Apnea for years. I couldn’t sleep with a CPAP machine strapped to my face. It was a serious problem. A scientist and engineer by training, I studied the problem for years and finally found that both obstructive and central sleep apnea are caused by a diminution of the signal from the brain to the diaphragm. This problem results in a breathing stoppage. When the brain senses this, it initiates a rapid deep inhalation which sucks the airway closed and ruins the entry to sleep. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem. Well thank goodness, it works! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Why haven’t you tried it? My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.

You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products!
