e all try to be as earth-friendly as we can be, but the subject is especially on our minds this month, as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22. Thankfully, Tucson is a “green” place to live, year-round, and this extra packed issue of Natural Awakenings proves it. We are surrounded by local businesses and organizations who have sustainability on their minds 24/7, and for that, I am proud to be a Tucsonan.
Holly Baker, publisher
Our expansive green section in this issue includes profiles of local businesses that can help you achieve maximum greenness in your home and life, plus other glimpses into local efforts to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

Dr. Alan Cross Now Offering Neuropathy Treatment
A
lan D. Cross, Doctor of Chiropractic and owner of Alan D. Cross, D.C., P.C., is now offering treatment for neuropathy. Cross says this therapy has an over 90 percent satisfaction rate with patients, who can gain relief from months or years of numbness or searing pain in the lower extremity. “Many people, including diabetic patients, suffer with loss of feeling or constant pain in the feet and/or legs,” says Cross. “Medication often doesn’t give substantial relief, or the patient prefers a route to restoring better nerve function without medication.” Although there is no guarantee with Alan Cross any treatment, this treatment has been proven to be highly effective in most patients, says Cross. “People who have given up on walking extended distances, dancing, bowling or other activities due to the pain or numbness may be able to resume the activities they miss.” Cross uses the Palmer method of adjusting and is one of a limited number of chiropractors trained in the Atlas Orthogonal technique. He also uses functional medicine to treat patients with chronic conditions, including nutritional response testing to determine if there are issues with heavy metals, immune challenges or other factors preventing the patient from living life to their maximum potential. Location: AAA Accident & Injury Clinics, 6700 N. Oracle Rd., Ste. 502, Tucson. For more information, call 520-797-4177, email ACrossDC@live.com or visit AlanCrossDC.com. See ad, page 6.

newsbriefs Regaining Emotional Health in a Japanese Garden

ume Japanese Gardens of Tucson is one of the first in the nation to institute a Stroll-for-Well-Being program of reflective garden walks, ideal for people suffering emotional upset because of a stressful transition in life, which can include episodes such as depression, mental exhaustion, PTSD, retirement and aging, severe illness or the loss of a loved one or pet. The distinctively restorative powers of Japanese garden walks have been scientifically studied and can provide people with a rich and transformative therapeutic experience. For example, Japanese garden viewing has been shown to improve the symptoms and moods of Alzheimer’s patients. Japanese studies of EKG results prove that people are more relaxed in Japanese gardens than in any other gardens and feel less stressed by life. Participants in U.S. studies report that walking through a Japanese garden setting as little as twice a week for six weeks and journaling about the experience reduces their feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fear and loneliness, and amplifies their feelings of happiness, joy and emotional strength. Location: 2130 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson. The gardens are open from October 1 through May 3. For more information, call 520-272-3200 or visit YumeGardens.org.

Astrology and Tarot Readings with Shivani Baker
W
ith 30 years of experience as an astrologer, tarot card reader and teacher and a strong spiritual background with grounded practical approach, Shivani Baker is now offering astrology and tarot readings and classes in Tucson. Baker says that anyone can learn to use these beneficial tools, and offers fun classes on both, including a six-class series on learning to read the tarot, held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., beginning April 8. She will also present an astrology class for beginning and intermediate students, beginning on May 2, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Baker has a background in psychology, and is helpful to those in transition and crisis—people facing terminal illness, divorce, changing careers, loss of a child and other issues. She uses the astrology chart and tarot to guide clients during any period of life. The astrology chart discusses many different aspects of who a person is, including health, relationships, creativity and lessons to be worked on, and it gives insight to personal challenges as well as how to enhance one’s gifts. The tarot is a tool that uses symbols or archetypes to tap into the subconscious, which holds all the answers within us. The tarot can give clarity to a specific issue going on currently. For more information, call 413-313-5677 or email ShivaB@charter.net. See ad, page 15.

Presenters and performers include Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement; Wendsler Nosie, tribe councilman of Apache Stronghold; Nancy Red Star, of the Cherokee Nation and author of Star Ancestors; Wilfred Buck, of the Opaswayak Cree Nation; TaliasVan & The Bright & Morning Star Band; and more. Once Paralyzed, Joe Pinella Now Teaches How to Move Freely without Pain
J
oe Pinella, founder of The Healing Movements System, will present “Hope… and a Roadmap”, a workshop that will teach how to ease pain, reduce stress and restore the joy Joe Pinella of movement, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 4, at Scottish Rite Temple, in Tucson. Pinella has studied and practiced the ancient Chinese healing arts of qigong and Tai Chi Kung for over 50 years. As a youngster, he had the unusual opportunity to study in a Chinese Buddhist temple in New York City. The test of his experience came in 1991, when his car plunged 200 feet down a mountainside and he landed on his head. His neck was broken, he had no feeling and could not move. After a month in the hospital, Pinella was sent home and told he would spend the rest of his life as a quadriplegic. Against doctors’ orders, he quit the therapy that would only teach him how to operate a wheelchair with his mouth. Using the ancient Chinese healing arts of qigong and Tai Chi, Pinella was able to regain full mobility. He did those exercises in his mind for many months until gradually, his body started to respond. Over the course of seven years, Pinella regained full use of his body, with no pain and no limitations. Feeling that he was “saved for a reason,” Pinella developed a program he calls The Healing Movements System. In his workshop, Pinella will delve into the theory and practice of The Healing Movements System. It will reveal the same powerful healing techniques, both mental and physical, that Pinella used in his recovery. Participants should come prepared to move, learn and practice the healing movements in order to apply them to their own lives. Location: 160 S. Scott Ave., Tucson. For more information, call 520-235-7180, email Joe@JoePinella.com or visit JoePinella.com. See ad, page 7.

practitioner spotlight Learn Iridology with Ann Alene
A
nn Alene, a naturopathic physician since 1972 and iridologist since 1982, offers an online, self-paced course on the practice of iridology—the inspection of the iris of the eye as an aid in determining a person’s state of health or in diagnosing a health problem. The course is available on her website, HeavenlyHealings.net, and a certificate is available at the completion of the course. Alene does Spiritual Energy Healings by communicating with one’s personal heavenly physician. She trained under Dr. Bernard Jensen, in Escondido, California, and Bernice Trimarco, in Arizona. “Let’s take a look inside your body—not with an MRI or a CAT scan, but through your eyes. Iridology has been around for hundreds of years. Those beautiful eyes of yours are the mirror that tells what is going on in your body,” says Alene. “Do you have back pain? Looking into your eyes can show where there was an injury to the spine.” In her practice of iridology, Alene takes a picture of a client’s eyes with a camera that is the latest in technology from Australia. The colorful eye photos can show many things, including a person’s digestion, the condition of their glands and causes for frequent headaches. For more information, call 520-975-1133 or visit HeavenlyHealings.net.

vor can find them by instead connecting with the past through food and flowers. “Heirloom seeds have remained intact and unexposed to commercial pesticides,” says Jere Gettle, owner of Baker Creek Seed Company, in Mansfield, Missouri. “They’re reliable—plants grown now will be the same next year; not so with hybrids.” This cleaner, tastier alternative to the status quo is typically packed with more good vitamins than good looks. Heirloom produce often also delivers a unique regional flavor, such as Vidalia onions or Hatch chile peppers.

Exemplary Fruits
Fine restaurants like to feature Yellow Wonder wild strawberries because they taste like cream. The fragrant Baron von Solemacher strawberry, an antique German Alpine variety, is small and sweet, red and full of flavor; it’s been around since the Stone Age. For pies and preserves, pair them with Victorian rhubarb, which dates back to 1856. Eat only the rhubarb stalks; the leaves contain poisonous oxalic acid. Aunt Molly’s ground cherry (husk tomato) hails from Poland. “It’s sweet, with a hint of tart, like pineapple-apricot,” says Gettle. “The Amish and Germans use them in pies. Their high pectin content makes them good for preserves. Heirlooms send people in search of old recipes and they end up creating their own variations. It’s food as history.”
Valuable Vegetables
Trending this year are purple veggies like the brilliantly colored Pusa Jamuni radish. Pair it with bright pink Pusa Gulabi radishes, high in carotenoids and anthocyanins, atop a stunning salad with Amsterdam prickly-seeded spinach’s arrow-shaped leaves, a variety once grown by Thomas Jefferson. Add a fennellike flavor with Pink Plume celery. Brighten salsas using the Buena Mulata hot pepper, a deep violet that ripens to a sweet red. Serve with pink pleated Mushroom Basket tomatoes or Lucid Gems, with their black/orange peel and striking yellow/orange flesh. Purple tomatillos are sweeter than green varieties and can be eaten right off the plant. “Purple sweet potatoes are found in Hawaii, but aren’t common on the mainland,” explains Gettle. “Molokai Purple sweet potatoes keep their deep purple color even when cooked, and are much higher in antioxidants than the orange variety.” To be novel, serve the Albino beet. Baker Creek’s customers use it raw in salads, roasted or fried and don’t let the greens go to waste. Monique Prince, a clinical social worker in Chester, New Hampshire, grows heirloom organic radishes, greens, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins in eight raised beds. She received Ganisisikuk pole beans (seventh-generation seeds) and Abnaki cranberry runner beans from
a Native American client. Rather than eat the bounty, she’s accumulating the seeds to save the varieties.
Herbs
Thai basil loves summer heat. Make batches of pesto, then freeze it in ice cube trays for later. Christina Major, a nutritionist in Trevorton, Pennsylvania, grows heirloom herbs that include borage, with its edible flowers, and marshmallow, which is a decongestant when added to tea. Her 300-square-foot garden supplies summer veggies such as scarlet runner beans, more than 50 kinds of perennial herbs for year-round use and heirloom raspberries, gooseberries and blackberries “that are eaten as fast as they’re picked,” she says. Heirlooms extend to trees and bushes. The drought-resistant Fourwing Saltbush has a deep

Write the Right Word
Homophones, Homonyms and Homographs, Oh My! by Stephanie Parker and Eve Hady
C
onfused yet? Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Let’s start with some definitions. Homonyms are spelled the same and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. Examples: He was left at the scene of the accident even though his Stephanie Parker left leg was injured. The bean stalk and Eve Hady allowed Jack to stalk the giant. Homophones are similar to homonyms in that they also sound alike, have different meanings, but may or may not be spelled the same. Examples: She rose to the occasion when he handed her a rose. They’re going to the movies and will meet their friends there. Homographs add another dimension to the confusion. These are words that share the same spelling, but may be pronounced differently. Examples: The actor took a bow for his role as Robin Hood. He was chosen for the part because he knew how to shoot a bow. If others read what you write, whether on websites, in books, blogs or newsletters, let a skilled editor review your work for these common and easily made mistakes. That way you’re assured of using the right word in your writing. Stephanie Parker and Eve Hady are The Accurate Wordsmith. cute pain from an accident, burn or insect bite may cramp your style at the family picnic, but the kind of pain that recurs every day and every night can make us miss out on the best times of our lives. Lost opportunities like playing with our children and grandchildren, participating in sports and other healthy activities like dancing do not give you a second chance for fun. Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus relieves pain, strains and sprains while substantially reducing recovery time.
Unique Ingredients are How it Works Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus works by penetrating deep into skin and muscle tissue. Key ingredients include certified, refined emu oil, whole leaf aloe vera, MSM glucosamine and chondroitin, in a proprietary blend of essential oils, Oriental herbs, botanical extracts and complex vitamins/antioxidants. MSM acts as an analgesic and antiinflammator y agent, inhibits muscle spasm and increases blood flow while aloe vera, the only known vegetable source of vitamin B12, Emu oil allows the other ingredients to immediately begin to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling. Emu oil, an allnatural food byproduct that contains high levels of linoleic acid, known to relieve arthritic pain, is obtained from the fat of the flightless emu bird, and a series of processes refine, sterilize and deodorize it. But not all emu oil sold is of the quality used in Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus; some is simply rendered, using added ingredients that pollute the natural oil. As an added benefit, emu oil increases skin layer thickness by up to 56 percent, decreasing wrinkles and age spots.
Follow the Directions For optimum relief, apply a generous amount of Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus directly onto the area of pain or discomfort, allowing it to be absorbed for two to three minutes. Don’t wipe away any that is not absorbed; massage it into the surrounding areas, and use it as often as needed— there are no side effects! Using Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus three times daily is ideal—depending on your level of pain—when you wake up, at mid-day or after work and just before bedtime. Regular use will continue to alleviate pain and help keep it from returning as often or as intensely.

he back is the strongest part of our bodies, yet it is one of the most common ailments. Between 70 and 80 percent of most industrialized people will have some sort of back or neck problem in their lives. When we slouch, our muscles are pulled out of their normal position, creating what can be called a “muscle tug-o-war”, and causing the body to work less efficiently. Even when working with an orthopedic doctor, a chiropractor or a therapist specializing in backs, it takes time and effort on the part of the patient, as well as the specialist, to re-educate the body. Health is an ongoing process and constant exercise is essential to maintain it. With loss of flexibility and ongoing stress, discs in the spine can bulge from too much pressure, or tear from a severe strain; they protrude and press on the nerves. This major problem, often referred to as “throwing your back out”, can be corrected, but it takes time. The longer the problem has been present, the more need there will be for manual therapy to correct the structure. Strength is necessary for a healthy back. Those who don’t exercise and have no muscle tone, or those who only do certain exercises, are probably out of muscular balance. The most common problem is weak abdominal muscles, which puts more stress on the lower back. It is important during a back episode not to do any knee to chest stretches, even if it feels good, as flexion pushes the disc out further and can make it worse. During an acute condition, see a doctor, as some anti-inflammatory medicine, Wobenzym (Natural), or muscle relaxers, ice and bed rest can correct most episodes. hypnotherapist can help people make changes in their lives. Whether your goal is to lose weight, stop smoking, win a race, climb a mountain, write a book, pass an exam or recover from a deep-seated fear or trauma, the following exercise can be an invaluable tool to help you succeed. With just three simple steps that only take about 90 seconds (ideally done three times a day), profound change can occur. 1) Close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths. 2) Visualize yourself after you have accomplished your goal. Imagine how your life will look. Imagine the sense of accomplishment and the pride you will feel. 3) Take a slow, deep breath, grasp that feeling tightly in your fist, then hold the fist over your heart. Finally, open your hand and place the feeling into your heart. Jeri Mills is an integrative medicine physician, certified clinical hypnotherapist, intuitive healer, author and storyteller. Age Gracefully with Better Posture
I
n some cultures, aging is associated with reverence, wisdom and being a mentor. Unfortunately, that is not the norm in our culture, where we are obsessed with youth and appearances. People often make snap judgments about our vitality, trustworthiness and health based on what they see. Part of that judgment comes from our posture, which is actually a good assessment of overall health. Posture is the one area of appearance that really does matter; it dictates how we feel on the inside, how much energy we have and how healthy our organs function. Posture has such a big effect on the body because it is a direct result of the health of the nervous system. Many people, including children, have poor posture. However, hunching over and “shrinking” is often associated with aging. Losing height can be common among older people, but it is by no means natural or normal. Poor posture is often the result of tension and pulling on the spinal system. The longer that tension is in place, the more forward movement of the head and torso, thus the “shrinking” appearance. The good news is this poor posture and loss of height is reversible. Dr. Joanne Haupert, a chiropractor at Inspired Healing, in Tucson, has worked with countless clients ranging in age from 50 to 98, who report height gain. As the tension in their spine is reduced, it allows them to stand taller, effortlessly. The health benefits of better posture can be enormous, with many conditions stabilizing and even reversing. Those who think they have poor posture should get an evaluation. Many chiropractors provide free or very low cost consultations, which can be a huge investment in our continued health. time, different shoes and the terrain to constantly determine the optimum environment for him to operate in. Salespeople are no different. By creating a “tool box” of techniques, they can assure successful sales performance. Unfortunately, we cannot control who buys, but we can control the activities that will “create a buying environment”. Any salesperson or business owner should consider making “actual” contact with 20 new people daily. This is primarily due to the fact that you will lose 13 to 17 percent of your clients every year, through no fault of your own. By committing to a “minimum daily” set of activities, you can assure that you will consistently be loading opportunities into your “sales funnel” and can take advantage of the “Frictional Business Theory”, which states that in a prospecting environment you might, “just happen to call someone” who “just happens to need what you are selling” that might have otherwise not known you existed had you not reached out to them. Think “dialing for dollars” and this might become your favorite sales activity.

markets nationwide, people are able to buy local more easily.” A focus on food quality is how Wendy Brown and her husband and five children launched their eco-journey just outside of Portland, Maine. “We started thinking about where our food came from, how it was grown and raised and what we could do to ensure that it was better,” says Brown. “What we don’t grow or forage ourselves, we try to purchase from local farmers.” Living more simply during the past decade has helped the family cut debt and become more financially stable. “Our entry point to sustainable living was to grow tomatoes on the steps of an apartment that Kelly and I once called home years ago,” echoes Erik Knutzen, who, with his wife Kelly Coyne, have transformed their 960-square-foot Los Angeles bungalow into an oasis where they grow food, keep chickens and bees, brew, bake and house their bikes. Gabriele Marewski’s journey also started with what she ate. “I became a vegetarian at 14, after reading Diet for a Small Planet, by Frances Moore Lappé,” says Marewski, who in 1999 turned an avocado orchard in Homeby Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko stead, Florida, into Paradise Farms. or many Americans, living more green building and clean energy. Renewable Energy Association (MREA), which will again host the world’s largest energy fair in June in Custer, Wisconsin. “It’s easy to start at home by adopting one new practice and sticking with it until it becomes a habit; then add a second practice and so on. This keeps people from getting overwhelmed.” We might, for example, switch to non-toxic home cleaning products when current products are used up. “There’s no need to throw everything in the trash and replace it all immediately—that would partially defeat the purpose of sustainability,” says Miresse. Green America, which suggests green alternatives to many products in online publications at GreenAmerica. org, recommends a congruent strategy. “We see people first change the way they purchase their food, move to reduce their purchases overall and green those they make, and then make their home more energy-efficient,” remarks Larsen. “Next, they consider walking and biking more.” Pamela Dixon explains, “On a day-to-day basis, it’s really about the products we use, like transferring to eco-friendly cleaners and yard maintenance, recycling electronic devices, paying bills electronically and receiving statements via email.” She and her husband, David Anderson, own Dave’s BrewFarm, in rural Wilson, Wisconsin, where they grow herbs, hops, raspberries and apples on 35 acres. “A 20-kilowatt wind generator supplies our electricity, and we use geothermal for heating and cooling,” adds Dixon. Due to career opportunities involving teaching principles of sustainability, the Wisconsin couple is in the process of selling the BrewFarm to move to La Crosse. “At our new home, we’re replacing the windows and appliances with more energy-efficient ones. We also chose our neighborhood so we can walk or bike to local grocery co-ops. We prefer to repair things when they break rather than buying something new, recycle everything the city will accept, compost food scraps and buy clothes at secondhand stores.” When the MREA Energy Fair began 27 years ago, the majority of attendees were interested in learning about first steps, such as recycling, relates Miresse. Today, sustainability basics ranging from fuel savings to water conserva-
tion are familiar, and they’re focused on revitalizing local economies. “Folks are now considering more ambitious practices such as sourcing food directly from local farmers, producing their own solar energy and incorporating energy storage, driving an electric vehicle or switching to more socially responsible investing.” The fair’s 250 workshops provide tools to help in taking their next steps on the journey to sustainability. Knutzen and Coyne’s passion has evolved from growing food into a larger DIY mode. “Cooking from scratch is something I prefer to do,” comments Knutzen. “I even grind my own flour.” Library books provide his primary source of inspiration. The Brown family likely echoes the thoughts of many American families. “We have many dreams, but the stark reality is that we live in a world that requires money,” says Wendy Brown. An electric car or solar electric system, for example, is a large investment. “The biggest barriers were mental blocks because we ‘gave up’ previous lifestyle norms,” she says. “Most people we know have a clothes dryer and can’t imagine living without one. Linedrying is just part of the bigger issue of time management for us, because living sustainably and doing things by hand takes longer.”
Each Day Counts
“The biggest and most positive impact I have comes from my general nonwaste philosophy,” advises Brown. “I try to reuse something rather than throwing it away. I’ve made underwear out of old camisoles and pajama pants from old flannel sheets. I reuse elastic
from worn-out clothing. My travel beverage cup is a sauce jar with a reusable canning lid drilled with a hole for a reusable straw. Such examples show how we live every day.” Marewski’s love of travel doesn’t interfere with her sustainability quest. “When I travel, I like to walk or bicycle across countries,” she says. “It gives me a closer connection to the land and spontaneous contact with interesting people. I’m building a tiny home on wheels that’ll be completely self-sufficient, with solar, composting toilet and water catchment to reduce my footprint even further.” “Last August, I started a tenure-track position in the school of business at Viterbo University,” says Dixon, who emphasizes how students can pursue sustainability in business and life. “I teach systems thinking, complex systems change and globally responsible leadership, all of which have a sustainability component.” She’s also faculty advisor to Enactus, a student organization focused on social entrepreneurship and making a positive impact on the community. “The best part of how we live is when my daughters make everyday ecominded choices without even realizing it,” observes Brown. “I can see how remarkable it is, because I have the perspective of having lived differently. But for them, it’s just the way things are done. I think in that way, I’ve succeeded.” Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko’s ecojourney is captured in their books, ECOpreneuring, Farmstead Chef, Homemade for Sale, Rural Renaissance and Soil Sisters. Every day, they eat from their organic gardens surrounding their farm powered by the wind and sun.

Her art embraces materials gathered in the sacred reaches of the Sonoran Desert to the sky islands of surrounding mountain ranges, as well as the profane in junk stores, alleys and dumps. What she acquires from these places becomes art that asks the viewer to pause, breathe deeply and allow oneself to become immersed in moments of awe. Kouchit’s journey of making art from eco-friendly material began while observing another artist’s oeuvre. “Victor Muniz, a Brazilian who gathered his art materials from landfill debris, inspired me,” she says, while displaying a portrait of broken glass, beads and brushed wash on a re-purposed canvas she had made. “I began moving toward it—away from store-bought brush and canvas a few years ago.” Eco-art is not new. Before tubes of oil paint that made plein-air art possible or the petroleum based formulation of fast-drying acrylic paint, artists used a variety of natural, non-toxic recipes to make paint. Milk powder, lime and pigments served artists well for thousands of years. Mosaics of gathered stone and shards of pottery grace ancient walls in memorable displays. Even Picasso was forced to use found wood board to paint on during the shortages after World War II. Kouchit too has had to experiment with unfamiliar material, pursuing ecological ethics in her art and shaping images in new creative forms. On an easel in her art studio is a piece she is currently reworking. Materials include tree roots of copper wire made from a tossed away speaker, a fragment of rough woven cloth and small stones, combined to make a naturalistic representation in her tree and waterfall series. “I never plan a painting or installation, just begin with the materials at hand and see what happens,” she says. Working with found objects, she acts through an inarticulate knowing, like a seed becoming a flower or a caterpillar cocooning into a chrysalis, then a butterfly. The Tucson-based artist is an early joiner. The expanding movement follows an eco-friendly ethic concerned with using materials grown sustainably and produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Earth-friendly art supplies that are environmentally and socially friendly because of the way they are formulated, manufactured or packaged, are less wasteful and less toxic than mainstream products, are safe for humans, animals and the environment, engaging recycled, reused and renewable materials that are relatively benign in their extraction phase. Kouchit is interested in the Southern Arizona Arts Council’s call to artists for the 2016 Recycled Art Rebecca Kouchit Exhibition. According to

The natural world is the principal source of Kouchit’s inspiration throughout her assembled, painted and printed art. A secondary inspiration are the many things people toss away that become found objects for her. Kouchit’s artwork draws attention to the significance of our ecosystem and how each plant, insect and human is dependently connected. Following nature’s cycle of returning and rebirth, the artist wanders canyons and ridges, scours thrift stores, alleys and dumps for materials to re-purpose in art. A Company that’s Saving Our Mountains
The passion they have for this work is easy to see, as they share how they are making a difference in Arizona. “Last year, A&E Recycled Granite diverted over 1.5 million pounds of countertop waste. That’s enough for a seven-story high granite paver stack,” enthuses Julie. “Each time someone uses our locally manufactured products, it’s a victory. That’s one less project that required the mountain to be harvested and cut up, then transported across the oceans. That’s another couple hundred pounds of granite that isn’t taking up space in Tucson or Phoenix’s landfills.” According to Josh, his wife can talk for hours about the difference they’re trying to make. She speaks at schools, councils and conferences and has even

estled on the east side of Tucson is a company with a mission like no other in Arizona. A&E Recycled Granite is literally working to save our planet’s mountains. Owners Josh and Julie Olauson are on a mission to save natural stone. Their shop is full of displays of wall tiles, pavers and even a fire pit—all beautiful and all recycled. A&E Recycled Granite works with the countertop fabrication industry in Tucson and Phoenix, and diverts their waste from local landfills. “All of the products we manufacture are from sink
cut-outs, edges and remnant slabs. We keep it out of the city’s solid waste stream in a system called Extended Product Responsibility,” explains Josh. Mountains are being harvested for their granite every year, all over the world. “The U.S. is the biggest consumer of granite in the world, importing it from over 50 countries,” says Julie. “When you consider that up to 60 percent of a slab can be thrown away, that’s a lot of our beautiful mountains being buried under dirty diapers and banana peels.”

created a 10-minute documentary that highlights the scope of the issue. Julie says, “That’s why they call me ‘the mouth’ and Josh ‘the muscle’.” Every granite piece A&E manufactures into its building materials is hand-sorted. “That means that all 1.5 million pounds has been lifted and sorted by a person,” explains Julie. “It’s quite a workout,” says Josh, “but, it’s well worth it. Every time I see a pallet of pavers heading to a job site, I know that our hard work has made a difference.” All of A&E’s products are made from solid stone. “We don’t use any form of chemicals, resins or epoxies in our manufacturing process. It is 100 percent natural stone,” says Josh. Because some natural stone includes mica and quartz crystals, the pavers seem to sparkle in the light. “Concrete pavers can’t even come close to duplicating the look of natural stone. That’s why it was mined in the first place— because of its beauty,” explains Julie. Some of the products that are creating a mountain of change include Split
Stone Veneer, Subway Tiles, Granite Pavers and Fire Pit Kits. A&E Recycled Granite won the 2015 Most Innovative New Product Award from the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association. This award proves that architects, builders and those in the housing industry value the recycled granite building materials they are bringing to the market and that they understand the benefit of using an eco-friendly product. A&E does not sell only to those in the trade. “We have a lot of do-ityourselfers who work with our products too. They’re easy to install, so even first-time remodelers can achieve amazing results,” says Julie. In the future, A&E Recycled Granite will keep working within the industry to promote these new products, continue to educate on why we need to save our mountains and continue to work hard to preserve Arizona’s natural landscapes, Josh says. Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona
G
oodwill of Southern Arizona, a nonprofit organization that operates five youth programs, five adult programs and supports over 500 jobs in southern Arizona, is on a mission to provide jobs, training and services to people with barriers to employment. Goodwill is able to support its mission through the resale of donated goods. Goodwill’s Youth Restoration Project will be featured at the SAHBA Home & Patio Show, April 8 to 10, at the Tucson Convention Center, where they will be showcasing and selling upcycled, repurposed and restored furniture pieces. Youth enrolled in the Youth Restoration Project program learn basic carpentry and bike repair while receiving support services to reach their educational and career goals. In addition, the program diverts approximately 4,000 pounds of material out of the landfill each month by giving donated furniture a makeover and selling the pieces in Goodwill stores. Restoration pieces can also be found at Goodwill’s GoodThreads Boutique located on 7366 North Oracle Road, in Tucson. “Our Youth Restoration Project combines both our mission and our commitment to sustainability,” explains Judith Simmons, Director of Marketing for Goodwill of Southern Arizona. “The showcase at SAHBA will allow us to show Goodwill’s mission in action and to find homes for our upcycled-recycled pieces.” On April 5, Simmons will be a guest on Mrs. Green’s World Down to Earth radio show, discussing the topic of “Why Thrifting Matters”. Simmons will talk about the green and sustainable aspects of shopping secondhand, including keeping items out of the landfill, as well as the community benefits of donating clothing to support our local economy. The show can be heard on MrsGreensWorld.com. For more information, call 520-623-5174, email JSimmons@GoodwillTucson.org or visit GoodwillSouthernAZ.org. See ad, page 24.

New clients can take advantage of a discounted rate of $57 for the first three labor hours of cleaning (two maids for 1.5 hours). Purmaid is different from most cleaning companies because it started with the belief that eco-friendly is not just a trend, but a necessary way of life. Purmaid takes steps to introduce green products in an effort to rid homes and life of these toxic chemicals that many people believe to be the only way to clean. “Once the team cleans a home, there is no lingering smell or scent—just good, clean air and a great feeling of clean,” says Estrella. “We are in this business because we genuinely enjoy seeing the difference and helping our customers maintain a clean home without the worry of any toxic residue that can harm their children or pets,” enthuses Estrella.

Local First Arizona
Res-Com Plumbing Co.
uring April, Local First Arizona celebrates Community Banking Month. Choosing an Arizona owned bank or community credit union helps ensure that Tucson’s businesses get resources they need, and Local First Arizona helps those interested make the switch to a local bank or community credit union. Tucson is home to thousands of small businesses which are the backbone of our economy. And yet, according to Stacey Mitchell of the Institute for Local Self Reliance, “The largest 20 banks in the U.S., which now control 57 percent of all bank assets, devote only 18 percent of their commercial loan portfolios to small business.” One of the critical goals for achieving sustainability is establishing local economies that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible. Local First AZ advocates for building prosperous and sustainable communities through supporting local businesses. Arizona cannot achieve that without strengthening local banking resources. “In order to stimulate our economy, we need ample access to small business loans from bankers and local credit unions who care about the long-term health of the business and community,” says Kimber Lanning, executive director and founder of Local First AZ. “Our community banks are more likely to fund the small businesses that are the engine of our economy.”

Pluggz grounding shoes were inspired by a series of remarkable wellness discoveries done by many highly regarded researchers. Unlike other shoes, Pluggz connect the wearer to the earth’s natural and healthful stored energy, called electrons, when direct contact is made with the ground. This includes grass, sand, soil, unsealed tile/stones, gravel and concrete and sidewalks, and it is the next best thing to walking barefoot. Most contemporary shoes are made of synthetic soles and insulate us from this restorative energy. Many scientific research studies report that grounding reduces inflammation, which has further been documented to be the culprit behind many chronic conditions, as well as diseases. Inflammation is also known to cause pervasive discomfort and pain. oel and Natalia Rodriguez, visionaries of A.M. Heating & Cooling, a family-owned Tucson business, envision a world in which companies come back to that personal interaction with their clients; a place where family, employees and clients’ best interests are looked after and cared for. The local business gives personal attention to heating and cooling needs. “Although we are a small business—for now—we think big and we think big purpose. We offer what the bigger companies can offer, from service maintenance and repairs, to beautiful, full, new installations,” says Natalia. “What makes us different and special is our personal attention to our clients, the strong relationships of trust we build and how we invest in ourselves so that it shows through in our dedication to our clients and in our work.” A.M. Heating & Cooling was named after the Rodriguez’s two children, who have taught them lessons in life and bring family values into the business. After the couple’s first born was diagnosed with Cri-du-Chat syndrome, their lives were turned upside down. What seemed like a tragedy at the time has since become a blessing as they served their daughter with drive, determination and love. “We have laser focus on what we want to bring to our community. Caring Homes Sought for Aging and Abandoned Horses by Sandra Murphy

n estimated 9 million horses in the U.S. are used for racing, show, informal competitions, breeding, recreation, work and other activities. Many need a new home when they start to slow down physically or when an owner’s finances become tight. Horses need space to run, require hoof care and when injured or ill, may require costly procedures.
Domestic Horse Rescue
“We foster 50 horses right now,” says Jennifer Taylor Williams, Ph.D., president of the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, in College Station, Texas, which has placed about 800 horses in the last decade. “We could have 10 times that many if we had more foster homes and space. There’s often a waiting list. We help law enforcement, animal control, and shelters with horses found through neglect or abuse cases.” Starved and too weak to stand, Tumbleweed was an emergency case when she arrived at the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch clinic on a sled. Having since regained her health, including gaining 200 pounds to reach the appropriate 40

weight for her age and size, she illustrates the benefits of the facility’s status as one of the country’s leaders in providing equine rescue and rehabilitation. The Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racers (CANTER USA) serves as an online matchmaker for racing horses. Volunteers take photos at tracks, obtain the horse’s bio from the owner or trainer and post them to attract potential new owners. Along with the healthy horses, the 3,000 ill or injured horses cared for by the alliance have been retrained, rehabbed and re-homed to participate in polo, show jumping, cart pulling and rodeos. “Race horses are intelligent, used to exercise and retire as early as 2 years old, so we find them a second career,” says Nancy Koch, executive director of
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management calculates the appropriate management level (AML) for the number of wild horses. Excess numbers are captured and offered for adoption or sale. In December 2015, 47,000 horses were waiting in holding facilities at an annual cost of $49 million. The AML projects removal of an additional 31,000 horses from Western lands. As an example, although local wild species predate the park’s existence, horses in Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park are labeled “trespass livestock”, and subject to removal. Return to Freedom, a nonprofit wild horse rescue in Lompoc, California, recognizes the tightly bonded nature of these herd groups. Its American Wild Horse Sanctuary is the first to focus on entire family bands, providing a safe haven for about 200 horses and burros. The Wild Horse Rescue Center, in Mims, Florida, rescues, rehabilitates and finds homes for mustangs and burros, usually housing 30 horses at a time. With many needing medical care upon arrival, expenditures average $3,000 their first year and $1,700 annually once they’re healthy. Although the goal is adoption, equine fans also can sponsor a horse by donating $5 a day or purchasing a painting done by a horse. The center also provides public educational forums. Sponsored by the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), April 26 is Help a
The average lifespan of a horse is 30 years. It should have two acres of land for grazing. The minimum annual cost for basic food and veterinarian services is $2,000, not including equipment and boarding, which can be more expensive in urban areas and in or near racing meccas like Kentucky or Florida. Rescues budget $300 a month per horse.

Call to Action
Although a U.S. law now bans slaughterhouses for domestic horses, each year 120,000 are sold at auction for as little as $1 each and transported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, their meat destined for human consumption in Europe and Japan or for carnivores at zoos. Horses can legally be confined to a trailer for up to 24 hours without food or water during shipment. Two-thirds of all horse rescue operations are either at or approaching capacity. Almost 40 percent turn away animals because of lack of space or money. Many horses are ill, underweight or injured, which raises the cost of care. “We need foster homes and volunteers. We need the time and skills people can donate; not everything is hands-on, so those that like horses but don’t have handling skills can still help,” says Williams. “Bluebonnet, for example, has many volunteer jobs that can be done remotely. Office work, social media to spread the word, gathering donations—everything helps.” Rescue groups ask that concerned horse lovers donate time, money and land to help and lobby for legislation to ban the export of horses for meat markets. Holistic Horse Care Tips
H
orses see themselves as prey, therefore they must be handled with calm, slow motions. They respond beautifully to Azmira flower remedies and homeopathy to lessen mental stress. Horses must be fed on a set schedule, with highest-quality hay/ feed, since they are prone to colic. Their feet must be regularly attended to prevent hoof problems from crippling them. Due to colic (inflammation of bowels) and hoof/leg problems (inflammation of hoof wall and joints), Yucca Intensive is used with great success on horses. Dr. Lisa S. Newman, Ph.D., founder and co-owner of Holistic Animal Care Shoppes, recommends supplementation twice daily with a mixture of a onepound coffee can full of pellets, half a can of rolled barley and a quarter can of bran (this helps move sand out of their systems, a primary source of colic). Soaking the complete mixture in liquids introduces more fluid into their digestive tracts. Per serving, add one Azmira Mega Pet Daily, 2000mg of Super C 2000 and 3 tablespoons of NaturFiber. If a horse is prone to hoof and leg problems, Newman recommends adding MSM and Yucca Intensive. Wait to feed this mixture until all the liquid has been absorbed, in which case the pellets will expand, so they must be broken apart with a strong cooking spoon. For nervous horses, add two B Complex-50 capsules. This mixture, in addition to alfalfa and grass hay (one pound of hay per 100 pounds of horse, per meal), will assure that your horse remains healthy and less prone to injury or disease. Many people have lost jobs and have other economic challenges which have caused a rise in the need of equine rescue and assistance with their horses. Happy Equine Acres Rescue & Therapy, also known as HEART of Tucson, is a community resource that assists with equine education, rescue of equine in need, rehabilitation and re-homing equine that may have otherwise gone off to
slaughter or been left to die in the desert. HEART of Tucson has been a nonprofit equine rescue since 2010, run entirely by volunteers. They take in horses that have been abused, neglected or abandoned, as well as surrendered horses from the community when individuals are having financial challenges and can no longer care properly for their equine. HEART of Tucson’s ultimate goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home each equine to a responsible, loving and forever home. Lazarus Before & After HEART also instructs and raises public awareness regarding horse ownership and care. Instruction includes feeding, grooming, training, boarding, veterinarian/farrier/dental care and teaches about all costs associated with the ownership of the equine. They do this by educating both the public and their volunteers through on-site, hands-on seminars, both at their equine rescue and other loca-

Last year, HEART took in six abused/abandoned/neglected horses and four surrendered horses; re-homed three horses; distributed over $500 worth of hay to individuals to assist with over 15 horses due to temporary economic issues; gave educational, handson training to over 100 community members on horse-related topics; assisted another horse rescue with cleanup of their rescue, grooming and care of their horses along with medical care; assisted local law enforcement agencies and Arizona Livestock by responding to over 20 locations of horses reported as abused, abandoned or neglected; and took in four horses that law enforcement agencies were unable to accommodate. HEART of Tucson is always accepting donations and in need of things like money for equine feed, supplements, equipment, horse panels and gates (portable). They also hope to one day find a property of 10-plus acres on which to build a permanent HEART Equine Rescue Facility. Cindy Butierez is president of Happy Equine Acres Rescue & Therapy. Marie Kondo on the Joy of Tidying Up
Simplicity Invites Happiness into Our Lives by April Thompson
How can we begin to get and stay organized? It’s not about a set of rules, but acquiring the right mindset for becoming a tidy person. Think in concrete terms, so
that you can picture what it would be like to live in a clutter-free space. Start by identifying your bigger goal. Ask yourself why you want this, repeating the question to get to the root of the answer. As you explore the reasons behind your ideal lifestyle, you’ll realize that the ultimate reason is to be happy. Then you are ready to begin. I recommend cleaning out and organizing your entire space in one go-around. When completed, the change is so profound that it inspires a strong aversion to your previously cluttered state. The key is to make the change so sudden that you experience a complete change of heart. By discarding the easy things first, you can gradually hone your decision-making skills, including knowing who else can use what you don’t need. I recommend starting with clothes, then move to books, documents, miscellaneous items and finally anything with sentimental value. photo by Ichigo Natsuno
J
apanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo helps us discover happiness through tidiness. Already perusing home and lifestyle magazines by age 5, she spent her childhood “tidying” up her surroundings rather than playing with toys. The organizing system Kondo went on to develop, the KonMari method, defies most long-held rules of organizing, such as installing clever storage solutions to accommodate stuff or de-cluttering one area at a time. Her New York Times bestseller, The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up, has been published in 30 countries, demonstrating that her methods speak to universal desires, including a hunger for order and simplicity. She’s now released a companion book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up. Kondo’s principles, including vertically stacking clothing and using special folding methods for socks, can seem quirky, yet her approach gets results. Kondo claims a nearly zero percent “clutter relapse” rate among clients because they’ve become surrounded only by things they love.
Is it important to touch every single object in the decision process? At one point in my life, I was virtually a “disposal unit”, constantly on the lookout for superfluous things. One day, I realized that I had been so focused on what to discard that I had forgotten to cherish the things I loved. Through this experience, I concluded
that the best way to choose what to keep is to actually hold each item. As you do, ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” When you touch something, your body reacts, and its response to each item is different. The process of assessing how you feel about the things you own—identifying those that have fulfilled their purpose, expressing your gratitude and bidding them farewell and good wishes for their onward journey—is a rite of passage to a new life.
Must keepsakes be included? Mementoes are reminders of a time that gave us joy, yet truly precious memories will never vanish, even if you discard the associated objects. By handling each sentimental item, you process your past. The space we live in should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.
What do you recommend for organizing what remains after a purge? The secret to maintaining an uncluttered room is to pursue simplicity in storage, so that you can see at a glance what you have. My storage rules are simple: Store all items of the same type in one place and don’t scatter storage space.
How does this process change us and our relationship to things? Through it, you identify both what you love and need in your home and in your life. People have told me that decluttering has helped them achieve lifelong dreams, such as launching their own business; in other cases, it has helped them let go of negative attachments and unhappy relationships. Despite a drastic reduction in belongings, no one has ever regretted it, even those that ended up with a fifth of their earlier possessions. It’s a continuing strong reminder that they have been living all this time with things they didn’t need. Connect with freelance writer April Thompson, of Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com. ere’s just a few words from someone who read Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and is trying to practice “tidying up” using a lot of joy. Lou’s Sock Drawer Before I didn’t want my husband to know what book I just bought because I am always buying books on “getting organized”, “decluttering your life” and the like, so I hid the book and only read it when he Lou’s Sock Drawer After wasn’t at home. Then it came time to really put what I read and thought I understood to work. I emptied my T-shirt drawer and started folding, when I realized I didn’t know what I was doing, so I got the book and propped it up right in front of my makeshift folding table. Once I followed the directions to a “T”, I was making progress. I ran my hands over the shirt, removing any wrinkles, and if it didn’t give me pleasure by even looking at it, I tossed it on the floor to use for rags. Progressing to long sleeve t-shirts, underwear, socks, I couldn’t stop until I knew he would be home. Though I was a bit apprehensive, thinking he was going to think I had lost it, I couldn’t wait to share my newly organized drawers. Much to my amazement, Lou embraced the new technique and started in with one of his drawers. He couldn’t believe it, but it was true—we were organized. Some pieces of clothing were even color-coordinated, but most of all our socks, t-shirts and underwear now “gave us great joy when we opened our drawers” and we had managed to gain more space and keep it that way. ter supply; if pumping is limited to the amount of water that naturally recharges through the soil, the levels of this finite resource will remain stable and help restore flow in our dry waterways. Recycled water sources are also critical for a balanced water budget. Greywater and reclaimed water, for example, can be used for irrigation and food production, reducing the strain on city supplies.
Modeling Hydro-Regionalism at the Living Lab
Staff and interns at WMG’s Living Lab enjoy the first taste of rainwater on tap in 2015.
Watershed Management Group Goes Hydro-Regional by Karilyn Roach
T
here’s a hip, new environmental buzzword on the scene: hydroregionalism—and Watershed Management Group (WMG) is leading the way. This local nonprofit organization works to engage people in water harvesting projects and policy initiatives that foster healthy watersheds and communities. Hydro-regionalism was recently coined by WMG to convey the principle of “meeting a region’s water needs with renewable supplies from the local watershed”. In practice, this means only using water from your own backyard, rather than depleting water resources somewhere else. Currently, most of Tucson’s municipal water is imported from the distant Colorado River, more than 300 miles away. The remaining supply comes from locally-pumped groundwater. Both of these sources are problematic. Importing water is energy-intensive and costly to deliver, while over-pumping
groundwater has historically depleted our aquifers, drying up our creeks and rivers. While hydro-regionalism may seem unattainable in the Sonoran Desert, think about this: more rain falls in Tucson in a year than the city uses from the tap. Tucson already leads the nation in water harvesting, green infrastructure, water conservation and native landscaping. Shifting to a sustainable, hydro-regional water system is entirely possible for the Old Pueblo—but to achieve this, we need strong conservation programs and greater use of renewable water supplies.
Renewable Supplies for Tucson Rainwater and stormwater are our most abundant renewable water sources. If properly harvested, this free resource could significantly reduce our demand for pumped or imported water. Groundwater can also be a fully renewable wa-
At WMG’s Living Lab and Learning Center in central Tucson, this bold idea is already in place—with inspiring results. This facility, home to WMG’s staff offices and a busy schedule of public trainings and events, meets 100 percent of its water needs with renewable supplies: rainwater, greywater and stormwater. By harvesting and recycling these free resources, WMG has declared its water independence and kicked the habit of tapping the distant Colorado River and draining our aquifers. Before turning off the city taps, WMG staff prepared a water budget for the Living Lab. This hard data proves that renewable water can supply all the facility’s needs, both inside and out—including a lush food forest with fruit trees and vegetables, drinking water for staff and visitors, and even rainwater showers.
Going Hydro-Regional, One Sub-Watershed at a Time WMG has set an audacious vision to restore flow to Tucson’s springs, creeks and rivers—and hydro-regionalism is at the core of this bold plan. With its Living Lab as a working model, the organization is helping homes, businesses, neighborhoods and entire watersheds begin to make this powerful shift. WMG’s Restore Sabino Creek campaign is blazing a new path for one of Arizona’s most beloved natural areas, taking the first steps in changing the tragic story of our depleted desert springs, creeks and rivers to one of hope. Having recently expanded this work to the Tanque Verde region, the visionary organization is bringing its message of water independence to people throughout the region. April 2016
