HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET

Styling & Photography by EchoStarMaker.com

I

f many of us look, we can see that we’ve come to our career path as a result of our personal journeys and what’s impacted us. We’ve been touched by someone or something that has influenced us in a particular direction in our lives. There are simply those pivotal experiences and people. In that vein, I can see that there’s no accident that I have come to own and publish a healthy living magazine. In my first career, I was drawn to becoming a social worker largely because of the impact my therapist and therapy had on me in my 20s, as I was searching for my way as a young adult. In my 40s, I experienced some health challenges and, being fortunate to understand the alternatives available to me, I chose a more holistic route. In the course of achieving the most healthy body possible Holly Baker, publisher and being the owner of a holistic health magazine, I have been very privileged to have many wonderful practitioners and therapies available to me. I want others to have access to the therapies that have so helped me. I’ve committed the last 10 years of my life to that goal. Recently, I decided to try a plant-based diet. I’m almost three months in and I just love how I feel. My diet feels like the missing link. While I tried it initially as a means to decrease inflammation and to feel my very best, I’m understanding just how planet friendly a plant-based diet is, and that our planet cannot sustain so many people eating meat. In “Changing Our Diet to Cool the Climate”, on page 32, you can learn how you, too, can become a “climatarian”. Whether cutting back on meat in your diet or using less energy at home, it’s a great time to do some “spring cleaning” in our lives, and take stock of small ways we can be making a big difference on the planet. Bless us all,

Healthy Couples Offers New Listening Service

H

ealthy Couples is offering a new listening service for individuals at a special rate of $1 per minute. These sessions can be in person, over the phone or via Skype. Bill White, a seasoned relationship and communication coach, says most people are not good listeners. It can be difficult to find someone who Bill White will just listen while we sort ourselves out. “Do you ever feel you need to express yourself without the other person giving advice, interrupting, talking about what they want to talk about, judging you, and/or getting distracted and not really listening? Do you feel you could come to your own conclusions and feel better if you could just let yourself vent without having to monitor it so it comes out right or respectfully? Would you like the listener to validate or re-state your messages so you know you’re heard?” questions White. White is offering all the time needed to talk, vent and, if desired, get some advice from a great listener. He will not get in the way as you express, and once you’ve initially vented, if White needs clarification to understand your message better, he will ask questions. If you feel you would like his input, he will provide that as well. In addition, White is offering initial individual sessions for couples at the same rate of $1 a minute. Usually the couple’s coaching goes much smoother if White has first had an opportunity to get to know each person of a couple separately, without having to balance listening to two people who need to express initial concerns. And, some things are initially much easier said to the relationship coach than to one’s partner. Manifesto for a Cancer Patient Now Available on Amazon

W

hat choices do cancer patients have? Why do those choices seem so few? Manifesto for a Cancer Patient, by Colleen Huber, NMD, addresses these questions. Recently featured on Your Life A to Z, Channel 3 TV, Phoenix, this book is a manifesto for patient rights and a manual through the cancer journey, explained by a naturopathic medical doctor. “Cancer patients need a manifesto to help restore their rightful position to the head of the table,” says Huber. “If the adult human is to regain personal sovereignty—that is, complete decision-making authority over his or her own health— the worship of the physician as demigod must end. The doctor is more appropriately an adviser regarding health and disease.” Huber is president of the Naturopathic Cancer Society, was the keynote speaker of the 2015 Euro Cancer Summit and the 2016 World Congress on Cancer Therapy, and a keynote speaker at the 2016 and 2017 World Congress on Breast Cancer. Gathering of Humanity Retreat in Santa Fe

T

he Gathering for Humanity, Awaken Through the Seeds of Knowledge and Wisdom retreat conference is being held May 16 to 20 at The Chi Center in Santa Fe. According to event organizers, this powerful and timely five-day gathering for unity and awakening is taking place during a pivotal moment on Earth. A mandate of Spirit through universal healer Mayan Grandmother Flordemayo, the Gathering is an urgent calling to all of humanity committed to increasing the light and coherence on the planet. “At this critical time on earth, we as Elders recognize the inherent need for humanity to move in a different way: our habits, what we hold true, how we see our place in nature, with the universe and within our hearts, must shift,” she says. Grandmother Flordemayo was shown that each of us is holding a piece of the puzzle that will catapult us in the direction of personal and collective healing, wisdom and harmony. “Collectively we will go through a process of incredible cosmic remembrance. This Gathering will be a catalyst and a sanctuary for the emergence of the Sacred into Form,” she explains. “Indigenous Elders, hosts, honored guests and musical guests will weave their gifts through the healing journey, activating energies of the land in a retreat environment to transform and realign body, mind and spirit. Sacred seeds of awakening will be planted at this event, which you may grow in your own communities through practice, inner wisdom and higher vibration.” According to Flordemayo, the Gathering represents four different organizations, brought together through a calling of spirit, aligned in a common vision to form a new global alliance. Gathering hosts include Grandmother Flordemayo and The Path, Master Mingtong Gu and the Chi Center, Matthew Reifslager and The Wholeness Crystal Earth Project, and Madi Sato and Timothy McLaughlin and Praising Earth. “Our purpose is an alliance of prayer, wisdom, education and healing for our Mother Earth—for all her inhabitants, for all children, and for the next seven generations, in the four directions,” says Flordemayo. “The Gathering for Humanity is not just a one-time event. It is a movement. We invite you to join us and thank you for moving with us with love, light, compassion and peace.” For more information, visit GatheringForHumanity.org. See ad, page 11. 12

Return of Mother Nature Nick Gustafson For artist Nick Gustafson, the natural world is a creative catalyst. “Nature is the only thing I’ve ever been interested in painting,” says the Forest Grove, Oregon, artist. “I go hiking nearly every weekend and like to spend time in the wetlands.” He also enjoys wildlife photography, using his photos as inspiration for his canvases. Gustafson uses a variety of media, including acrylics, watercolors and colored pencils to render whimsically styled, brightly patterned horses, trees, mushrooms, flowers, frogs and insects. He typically photographs his paintings to edit them digitally, amplifying the colors. The artist’s family, including his five children, is another source of inspiration and support; he and his daughter recently captured first place in the adult and youth categories of a local area chalk art festival. An artist since childhood, Gustafson studied at the Art Institute of Seattle and Art Institute of Phoenix. His paintings have been exhibited in venues throughout the West. Gustafson has also donated works to some of his favorite wildlife charities, including Save the Frogs! and the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue. of both of their eyes together to form a clear, stable image that their brain can process. There are at least 18 other visual skills besides 20/20 visual acuity that must come together, almost like an orchestra, to have the best possible vision.

Does My Child Need Vision Therapy? Frequently Asked Questions & Important Answers

O

Amy Thomas

ver the past 10 years, the Arizona Vision Therapy Center has been asked a lot of questions about vision therapy by parents that have come through the office. Here are just some of the questions that you, too, may be asking regarding your child’s performance in school, sports or at home—and how these concerns could be quelled with vision therapy.

Why would my child need vision therapy?

There are many common reasons that people have come into the office for treatment. They involved struggling with: reading; handwriting; paying attention in class; performing sports to their best potential; taking tests (especially timed tests); homework wars (avoiding or throwing fits when forced to do homework); and headaches, strain or fatigue with near work (within arm’s reach).

What is vision therapy?

Just as there is therapy for the back, legs, hands and almost every other body part you can imagine, there is a therapy for the eyes and brain. This therapy is needed when a person has not learned how to control their eyes to allow them to see objects clearly, singly, comfortably and with little effort. This therapy is also needed for people who originally learned these skills but had a brain injury that caused them to “forget” how to control their eyes. Now for the technical explanation: Vision therapy is a progressive program of vision activities performed under doctor supervision, individualized to fit the visual needs of each patient, generally conducted in-office, in once-weekly sessions of one hour and supplemented by home therapy, about 10-15 minutes each day when not in therapy.

Why have I not heard about vision therapy before now? Vision therapy seems to be a hidden gem. One theory that I have is that when most people consider vision, they only think of 20/20. If their child has 20/20 vision, then they must have perfect vision, right? Not always true; in fact, most people that I treat in my office have 20/20 visual acuity but struggle to bring the images

My eye doctor said that my child’s vision was perfect, so why would I need to see a developmental optometrist? Most visual processing or developmental vision problems cannot be detected unless your eye doctor specifically tests for them. In the absence of these symptoms, these tests are typically not incorporated into the exam. In the presence of these symptoms, eye doctors may conduct more extensive tests and/or refer patients to a developmental optometrist. You can find a downloadable “report card” about your child’s vision at AZVisionTherapy.com that you can take to the eye doctor to ensure that the visual skills needed to read, write and learn are covered in their exam. If not all those skills are being tested, consider a second opinion with a developmental optometrist.

How can vision therapy help my child?

Since visual functions take up about 80 percent of the brain, the improvements from vision therapy can affect most areas of a person’s life. Some comments that we have heard from past patients include: “My son can catch and throw balls so much better now”; “My daughter does not have her typical meltdowns when we need to change our plans”; “My child seems so much calmer now”; “My son, who used to hate to read, is now reading chapter books without being told to”; “My child is now finishing his homework without a battle, and his grades are improving drastically.”

I have been told that vision therapy is extremely expensive. Why is that?

The cost of vision therapy is comparable to getting braces. Because vision therapy must be tailored to each person specifically, the doctors that provide this service must be trained extensively to understand the underlying problems that are causing the visual symptoms and how to treat them. In the past, parents have tried treatments that were not provided by fully-trained doctors and have also tried do-it-yourself home remedies. Both of these tended to have poor results because the main cause of the problem—the brain—was not taught the skills necessary to perform the tasks in real-world situations.

When is it too late to do vision therapy?

It is never too late to do vision therapy as long as the person is motivated to get better and put the work into it. We have worked with many 80-year-olds that were originally considered senile but came to find out that it was just their vision that was getting in their way. Their improvements were life-changing. Connect with Arizona Vision Therapy Center at 520-886-8800 or VisionTherapy@live.com. Retail Pharmacies versus Compounding Pharmacies

T

ucson is inundated with retail pharmacies. We have them on almost every major street corner. Sadly, the large chains and big box stores have driven most independent retail pharmacies out of the market. However, compounding pharmacies are thriving and here to stay. Retail pharmacies dispense commercially available manufactured products while compounding pharmacies start from scratch, often beginning with powdered active ingredients. Compounding is not new by any means. Compounding began centuries ago with pharmacists mixing remedies and special formulations. Compounding today has become much more scientific, analytical and standardized. Compounding is the process of creating medications that are unique to each individual thus providing more than the standard one-size-fits-all approach. Considering that a patient’s health care can be as unique as the individual or animal, some of the best medical solutions often arise from compounding. Compounding is useful in situations where patients are allergic or sensitive to an ingredient in a commercially available medication like a dye, preservative or filler. Compounding allows preparation of medications that are dye-, preservative- and parabenfree. It is also useful when a different dosage form is necessary for administration to a child or pet, for example a flavored liquid versus a tablet. Speaking of pets, compounding is very useful when it comes to medicating a pet. Compounds can be prepared in flavored liquids, chewy treats, transdermal gels and more for animals. Commercial medications do not always come in the correct dose for a patient and compounding a different strength may be necessary. Sometimes medications are discontinued due to lack of use, however some patients rely on those medications. If they were not removed from the market due to safety issues, compounding pharmacists may be able to prepare them. From time to time, drug companies experience backorders and delays in manufacturing. During those times, pharmacists may be able to compound these medications. Compounding allows providers to be creative and come up with their own formulations, combinations and/or strengths to treat a condition. Compounding pharmacists work in a triad relationship with a medical/veterinary provider and the patient/pet owner to help customize compounds that are specific to one’s needs. Compounding requires a prescription, even if the medications are available without a prescription. Compounding pharmacists are excellent resources for patients looking for individualized treatment. While pharmacists do not prescribe medications, they educate patients and work directly with patients’ physicians or providers, by recommending therapies, medications and specific dosage forms such as creams, gels, ointments, flavored suspensions, suppositories, capsules, troches, injections, ophthalmics and more. Dana Reed-Kane, Pharm.D., FIACP, FACA, NFPPhC, FCP, practices at Reed’s Compounding Pharmacy, located at 2729 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson. L-PRF Therapy for Dental Patients

W

hat is L-PRF therapy? L-PRF (leukocyte-platelet rich fibrinogen) therapy is a way to speed healing. It uses special components of the blood such as leukocytes, growth factors, proteins and platelets. They are used to heal hard and soft tissues within the mouth. This is best performed during tooth extractions and bone grafting. Utilizing this type of therapy can help in preservation of the socket. During a dental appointment, a dentist will draw a small amount of blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge, isolating the platelets and plasma. These are then introduced into the area of the surgical procedure to help with the stimulation of collagen production and facilitate faster healing. The process can reduce healing and recovery times for patients. L-PRF helps prevent post-operative pain and infection. It has therapeutically been shown to reduce post-operative pain when placed in extraction sockets due to the improvement of soft tissue healing, reducing infections with the presence of microbial fighting immune cells (leukocytes), and by helping with blood clot retention. This leads to a significant reduction in the number of analgesics taken by patients. L-PRF also greatly reduces a patient’s chances of developing dry socket. L-PRF has been utilized in medical science for over 20 years, but it has more recently been introduced into dental treatments. It is biological, safe and effective, making it a viable option for many patients. Krizman Dental Integrative Biological Dentistry provides the latest, state-of-the-art services to improve the health and wellness of the smile and body, including treatment with L-PRF therapy. They are located at 1601 N. Tucson Blvd., Ste. 35, Tucson. Connect at 520-3260082. See ad, page 19.

Get Your Spring On

S

pring is the time of year when nature renews and rebuilds for the next year. For us, that means we’re getting the winter weight off. Rejuvenate your body with nutritious food and exercise. Some may need to metabolically clear the body and some may just need to get the body moving again.

Here are some tips to great spring off to a good start. • Set a goal. Make a plan. Work the plan. • See a professional for help with a detox, exercises, diet and stress. • Get your yearly physical and lab tests done. • Have fun, laugh, breathe. Get your rest. We are all guilty of letting things slide in the winter months. Start working back up to last year’s routine, make those adjustments or attack new goals. Look at the end game. New Study Shows Floating Works for Anxiety and Depression

T

he Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) is excited to announce the PLoS One publication of the first float study ever conducted in patients suffering from both anxiety and depression, published in February 2018. This open-label trial from Dr. Justin Feinstein’s Float Clinic and Research Center at LIBR in 50 patients, provides an initial proof-of-principle study showing that one hour of float therapy can provide significant short-term relief from symptoms of stress and anxiety across a range of different conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. More than resolving symptoms of mental illness, the experience greatly enhanced mental wellness, leaving patients in a peaceful, serene state afterwards. This mood-enhancing effect of floatation was especially notable given that most of the patients had co-morbid depression. It is important to emphasize that this was an open-label study examining the short-term effects of floating. LIBR is now tracking the time course of these effects as well as studying whether or not there is evidence for long-term benefit following repeated practice. The entire study can be found at FloatTucson.com/links. Kalyn Wolf, owner of Cloud Nine Flotation, at 2118 S. Avenida Planeta, Tucson, has been guiding people through floating since 1986. For more information, call 520-668-4017 or email Info@FloatTucson.com.

If insomnia is a result of stress, anxiety or depression, reiki can help alleviate the problem. The effects of reiki include relaxation, restored concentration and connection. The relaxation process allows the client to put their problems in perspective and find a sense of mental and spiritual balance. A scientific study published in Biological Research for Nursing explored reiki and its ability to promote calmness, relaxation and a sense of well-being. Reiki can bring balance back to one’s life and restore a healthy sleep pattern. When concentration is restored, the client feels like they have control over their problems once again. Concentration allows the client to sort out their stressful issues. Making a connection with the reiki provider helps the client feel safe and nurtured. The presence of reiki and the provider creates an atmosphere that is pleasant and welcoming. The results are relief of stress, anxiety and depression, allowing for better sleep. Healthy Climate, Healthy People Why a Warming Planet is Harming Our Health by Lisa Marshall

S

amantha Ahdoot’s son Isaac was 9 years old when he collapsed from the heat while playing clarinet at band camp. It had been a record-hot summer following a mild winter and early spring, and Dr. Ahdoot, an Alexandria, Virginia, pediatrician, had already noticed a string of unusual cases: A toddler had contracted Lyme disease in the once tick-free region of Northern Maine. A teenager had suffered an asthma attack in February, a full month before she usually started taking allergy medicine. A displaced grade-schooler from out of town arrived traumatized after fleeing a hurricane-ravaged home with her family. But it wasn’t until she saw her son laying on a gurney in the emergency room 18

with an IV in his arm that she fully connected the dots. “I was aware that the weather had changed a lot since I was kid. But it really didn’t hit home until that day that climate change could affect my health and the health of my children personally,” recalls Ahdoot. “I realized it would be a betrayal of my duty as a pediatrician to sit back and do nothing about it.”

professionals that have begun to reframe climate change not as a concern for elsewhere or the future, but as a pressing U.S. public health issue today. In one recent survey of 1,200 allergists, 48 percent said climate change is already affecting their patients a “great deal” or a “moderate amount.” In another survey of lung specialists, 77 percent said they were seeing patient symptoms grow more severe due to worsening climate-related air quality. In a sweeping review published last October in The Lancet medical journal, a team of healthcare professionals proclaimed that the human symptoms of climate change are “unequivocal and potentially irreversible,” noting that since 2000, the number of people in the United States exposed to heat waves annually has risen by about 14.5 million, and the number of natural disasters annually has increased 46 percent. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also begun to weigh in with a Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative to help local health departments brace for everything from the hazardous air quality associated with more forest fires to the spread of vector-borne diseases like Zika and West Nile as the range and season of mosquitoes and ticks expands. Meanwhile, groups like the newly formed and expansive Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, to which Ahdoot belongs, are being proactive. Its doctors are greening their offices, swapping cars for bikes, buses or carpooling, lobbying lawmakers and encouraging their patients to undertake measures to prevent the problem from worsening. In the process, they say, they might even improve their own health.

“We want the public to understand that climate change is not just about polar bears or receding glaciers in the Arctic, but also about our children and our health here and now,” says Ahdoot.

of that just since 1990, according to the Lancet report. Further, the tick that carries Lyme disease is now present in 46 percent of U.S. counties, up from 30 percent in 1998. “My physician colleagues used to treat two or three cases a month during tick season,” says Dr. Nitin Damle, a physician at South County Internal Medicine, in Wakefield, Rhode Island. “Now each of us sees 40 to 50 new cases each season.”

Heat Pollution

Rising heat can also aggravate lung conditions because it promotes the production of ozone, a major lung irritant. With prolonged heat often come wildfires. When one burned for three months in North Carolina in a recent summer, researchers discovered that residents of counties affected by the smoke plume showed a 50 percent increase in emergency trips due to respiratory illness. Like Isaac, more kids are ending up in hospitals due to soaring temperatures, with U.S. emergency room visits for heat illnesses up by 133 percent between 1997 and 2006. Ahdoot recalls a young football player from Arkansas that showed signs of weakness and fatigue during practice, but wasn’t treated right away. He ended up with heat stroke, kidney failure and pulmonary edema and ultimately required kidney dialysis. “Every summer now, I see the impacts of increasing temperatures and heat waves on kids,” she says. Climate change can also impact mental health, according to a recent review by the American Psychological Association. Exposure to natural disasters can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder. Plus, according to research institutions including the University of California, San Diego, and Iowa State University, chronic heat, especially at night, can interfere with sleep and even lead to aggressive behavior. Then there’s the worry about what to do about it, and whether it will be enough. “When you talk with people about what is affecting them, climate is definitely one of the things stressing them out,” says Thomas Doherty, Psy.D., a psychologist in Portland, Oregon. “There’s a sense of mystery and powerlessness around it that weighs on people.” 20

Fresh Perspective, New Hope

Mona Sarfaty, a family physician who is now director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, attests that 69 percent of Americans are aware that climate change is occurring, and more than half agree that human activities are at least partly to blame. Yet only a third believe it could ever harm them personally. “So much of the early focus was on the receding glaciers and the penguins,” she says. “People today still think it will affect ‘those other people over there,’ but not them.” She agrees with the recent focus on imminent health issues, and is encouraged that a growing number of healthcare professionals feel it’s their duty to inform their patients about climate change to mobilize action. “When you talk about climate change not only in terms of the health impact it has on individuals and families, but also in terms of the real-time benefits of taking action against it, people are a lot more interested in doing something,” says Sarfaty. For instance, shifting to clean energy sources like wind and solar instead of coal can effect better air quality and easier breathing now. Cycling or walking to work rather than driving can reduce carbon emissions, boost feel-good brain chemicals and keep weight in check. Writing letters to editors or attending rallies to urge lawmakers to pass climate-friendly policies can not only fend off the anxiety and depression that comes with feeling helpless, but also effect real change. Ahdoot is taking these steps now. She has solar panels on her roof, is assisting the local hospital to reduce its carbon footprint, takes public transportation to work and encourages her kids to walk whenever possible. “I don’t feel powerless at all. I feel empowered and optimistic,” she says. “The more we know, the more we are moved to act. We can all do something small every day to protect our climate.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

PLASTICS WARS

Celebrate Earth Day Locally and Globally

arth Day, on April 22, will serve again as a galvanizing force on ways to save our planet. With the theme of End Plastic Pollution, the Earth Day Network (EDN) is setting a specific focus this year on the importance of reducing the use of plastics and finding more Earthfriendly alternatives (EarthDay.org). The nonprofit notes that of the approximately 300 million tons of plastic annually produced to make bags, bottles, packages and other commodities worldwide, only about 10 percent is successfully recycled and reused. The rest ends up in landfills or as litter, leaching dangerous chemicals into soil and water, endangering humans and wildlife alike.

Series of 10 sessions! now

EDN asks everyone to pledge to switch to sustainable alternatives, subscribe to its newsletter, spread the word via social media, educate and mobilize citizens to demand action, and donate to support the adoption of a global framework to regulate plastic pollution that will engage individuals, companies and governments worldwide. Further, EDN is extending people’s ability to take personal responsibility by self-rating and guiding their involvement via practical toolkits. “People can create and follow a plan to reduce their plastic footprint and also share that data to help others via the Billion Acts of Green online campaign,” says Valeria Merino, vice president of Global

Low-Moisture Carpet Cleaning with Pima Cleanpro

P

ima Cleanpro offers true eco-friendly carpet cleaning without the use of water saturation or harsh chemicals. This restores carpets to their natural beauty, prolonging the life of carpets by preventing the breakdown of the carpet fibers. The carpet cleaning service leaves no residue, is safe for children and pets, has a one- to two-hour dry time and will restore the beauty of carpet and tile. After Steven Nelson a clean, there is an immediate improvement in indoor air quality, as allergens are removed from carpeting, upholstery and area rugs. “In normal steam cleaning or hot water extraction, the backing on the carpet is saturated, causing the breakdown of the fiber, and providing the perfect environment for mold and mildew to set in. This is completely avoided with the low-moisture system used by Pima Cleanpro,” explains Steven Nelson, owner and operator. “With steam cleaning or hot water extraction, dirt and stains return quickly due to the wicking of moisture through the fibers as they dry over days or weeks. With the Cleanpro system, this is avoided because it dries quickly, within one to two hours.” For more information, call 520-954-2119, email PimaCleanpro@gmail.com or visit PimaCleanpro.com. ccording to my grandmother, being idle can get you into trouble. Idling your vehicle can also be trouble for children, people with lung and heart disease and the vehicle itself. Not only does engine idling waste gasoline and put pollution into the air we all breathe, but it can also damage cylinders, spark plugs and the exhaust system. We don’t often think about the pollution our vehicle is emitting because most of it is invisible. However, just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Here are some facts to ponder. Idling vehicles produce thousands of tons of toxic pollution annually. • Elevated levels of air toxins were found at schools during times when parents were waiting in parking lots for their children. • Idling 10 seconds or more uses more fuel and emits more greenhouse gases than restarting the engine. • Vehicles warm up faster when driving than when idling. Drive slowly at first and avoid revving the engine. Next time you are picking up a child at school or going to the bank, fast food restaurant or pharmacy, consider parking and walking inside instead of using the drive-through. If we try to drive less and reduce time spent idling our engines, the impact on air quality and health can be significant. Healthy air is in our hands. Household Cleaning Products More Harmful to Lungs Than Cigarettes?

new, independent study based on 20 years of research reveals a sobering fact: cleaning your home with common, well-known grocery store products made with ammonia, chlorine bleach, quaternary disinfectant compounds and other dangerous chemicals significantly damages lung tissue in women. In fact, the study showed that cleaning with such products as little as once per week was as damaging over time to respiratory health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years. The study was recently published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Their shocking findings are as follows: women are affected far more than men; cleaning at home is just as harmful as being an occupational cleaner, if not more so; liquid cleaners are just as dangerous as sprays; ammonia, chlorine bleach, quaternary disinfecting compounds and other dangerous chemicals appear to be primary culprits; women who regularly use cleaning products have increased rates of asthma; and damage is cumulative over time. What kind of products use ingredients that contain ammonia, quaternary disinfectants, chlorine bleach and other dangerous chemicals? Nearly all home cleaning products, including disinfectants, bathroom cleaners, toilet cleaners, shower and tub cleaners, scrubs, stain removers, floor cleaners, degreasers, window and glass cleaners and all-purpose cleaners. What should be used instead? Melaleuca scientists have formulated cleaning products that effectively perform household chores without the cheap, available and now documented-as-dangerous chemicals cited in this study. The EcoSense line has taken a firm stance on the harmful ingredients in this study and will never use them. Melaleuca cleaning products are so safe that no child safety caps are required, and they clean as well as or better than the competitive products that use dangerous ingredients. For more information about safer cleaning products, call Anne McKechnie, Exeutive Director at 520-990-5268 or visit Melaleuca.com/EcoSense. Read the full study at Tinyurl.com/ThoracicStudy.

Stop Solar Geoengineering in Tucson One Man’s Quest to Clear Our Skies

O

by Amanda Butterworth

n an average day in Tucson, while waiting to interview filmmaker and activist Matt Landman, I notice jet planes crisscrossing the sky, leaving behind a stream of white plumes, slowly fanning out and becoming a milky haze. I find myself observing the phenomenon and much to my dismay, see a once pristine blue sky slowly become hazy grey. The explanation we often hear is that the trails emitted from planes are nothing more than water vapor, which rapidly dissipates. But this “water vapor” above my head is not dissipating. In fact, it is spreading and lingering. Over the last few years, there has been an extreme surge in the media dismissing any observations made by citizens regarding the change in our skies. Labelled as “conspiracy nuts” or “people who don’t understand simple science”, the stigma of even lightly broaching the subject of a possibility of chemtrails keeps people silent nowadays. Landman, however, is not afraid to speak to anyone on the matter. Landman recently created the movie Frankenskies and has since moved to Arizona as part of his mission to awaken and educate others about solar geoengineering, also known as chemtrails. “Wow, we are getting sprayed like bugs today, huh!” Landman says behind me. I turn around and there stands Landman in a black t-shirt which says, “Stop Geoengineering Tucson Summit 2018”. The picture below it is an ominous gas mask. “We might need that gas mask on your shirt today,” I reply, and we begin discussing his life’s work. “I grew up in Virginia,” Landman explains, “and I spent most of my time outdoors. But I never saw skies like we are seeing nowadays. I first woke up to all of this working on an organic farm. I was disenchanted with the business world. I had a film degree and graduated top of my class with an MBA, but something else was calling me. So, I ended up working on this farm in Northern California

growing squash and potatoes. One day, completely dressed in rain gear and expecting the annual deluge, I witnessed very unusual jet traffic on the edge of a storm front. These planes came in and crisscrossed the sky all day on the edge of that front. And guess what? It didn’t rain. The forecast called for 100 percent chance of precipitation. I mean, the salamanders and frogs were coming out, expecting it. But that storm front passed right over us and didn’t rain a single drop. This was when I had my first a-ha moment connecting the planes’ flight activity to the weather and cloud formations.” It wasn’t until later, after a lot of research, when it became obvious to Landman how much we were completely ignorant of what is happening in our skies. “That is when I decided to dedicate my life to what I consider a treasonous agenda unfolding every day above our heads. And making Frankenskies was my first step to help awaken others and start to put a stop to this nonsense,” he says. He also works at a grassroots level, handing out fliers, talking to people on the streets, at famers’ markets, and mailing fliers to others around the world who want to do the same. Asked why people would want to do something so insidious, Landman lets out a big sigh. “There are so many theories as to why,” he says. “All I can say is it has something to do with blocking out our sun. Did you know that there is a solar geoengineering experiment being launched this year in Tucson by Harvard scientist David Keith, in an attempt to dim the sun with aerosolized nano-particulates? They claim it is a solution to global warming.” He scoffs and shakes his head, “It is a crime against Tucsonians that their consent has never been considered regarding this experiment. But this experiment, if all goes ‘well’, will be launched as a global solution. The whole world could very well see our skies blanketed with heavy metal nano-particulates every day, forever. People would have to pay to see the sun. The funny thing is, we have already seen it start to happen. People are seeing these crazy cloud formations, strange brown rainbows, square clouds. Some people are taking samples of rain water or their hair and finding high amounts of aluminum, barium, strontium. We, together as a whole, have to wake up and do something about it. I see Tucson and the upcoming solar geoengineering experiment as the frontline to this global issue.” Landman goes on to detail what the experiment will involve. “They call it a ‘perturbation’. Out at World View, they are going to launch a balloon and spray aluminum, crushed diamonds and sulfuric acid separately to see which does ‘best’,” explains Landman. “The residents of Tucson will not consent to this. Not on our watch, not on our turf.” On May 12 at the Gallagher Theater, UOA, Landman will be hosting the Stop Geoengineering Summit in Tucson specifically to rally and protest this experiment, standing up for the air we breathe and showing the world what they too can do to address this agenda. Knowledgeable authors and speakers are coming from different parts of the country to inform and inspire at the free event. “I hope we can pack the place and show the world Tucson was the wrong location to launch this crime against humanity.” For more information, visit StopGeoengineeringTucson.com. teve Liu, a licensed acupuncturist from Northern California, came to Tucson in 2001. Along with his acupuncturist wife, Wen, they opened HanLing Acupuncture Healing Center, two months after arriving in town. These days, Liu is making waves in the healthy living community with his integrative approach to Parkinson’s disease treatment, PLANtoMOVE and upcoming new Alzheimer’s disease prevention and treatment program, PLANforLIFE. We asked him about his personal health journey and perspective of the relationship between our own health and our planet’s health.

April 22 is Earth Day. Tell me, as a former electrical engineer in Silicon Valley and now an acupuncturist in Tucson, what do you know about this special day and what do you do to help our planet? Honestly speaking, I really do not know much about Earth Day except I know it has something to do with conservation, pollution reduction and planting more trees. Through Natural Awakenings, I learned more about green living, electrical vehicles and recycling. But as a health practitioner, I really want to bring up the awareness of healthy body and healthy planet connection. What do I mean? Eight years ago, I turned to eating plant-based foods only.

NaturalTucson.com

During these years I learned if I just practice this one lifestyle, not only is my body able to help prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease and reverse chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, but I am also doing my share to help this planet’s future sustainability. The “two-birds-one-stone” effect results from one thing I do consistently: watch what I put in my mouth.

Can you elaborate more on how you discovered this ‘healthybody-healthy-planet’ link awareness? I started my own health journey eight years ago when my sister passed with stage four lung cancer. Surprisingly, she never smoked and she was only 60 years old. In the quest of trying to find out why, I discovered her mid-western, high-fat, highprotein, animal-based diet had everything to do with the development of her cancer. In the next five years after her passing, I read many books written by nutrition researchers and medical doctors who did extensive studies on the relationship between foods and diseases. I was influenced most by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D.; Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD; John McDougall, MD; Neal Barnard, MD; Garth Davis, MD; and Dean Ornish, MD. What surprised me later was the fact that I started my quest totally based on the relationship between

foods and health, but their books raised other very urgent issues we are facing daily—environment, water, energy, world hunger, the suffering of animals and Earth’s future sustainability.

Can you be specific about the relationship between our health and the planet’s health? Close to 1.4 million Americans die every year from two chronic diseases alone: heart disease and cancer. I always wonder, with trillions of dollars the medical system spent every year to treat these two diseases, why haven’t we found the “magic drugs” that can cure them? One answer I tell my patients often is: I can guarantee you that these many people don’t die every year from eating too many vegetables, fruits, beans and grains. As Dr. Garth Davis, a bariatric surgeon from Texas, pointed out is his book Proteinaholic, our deep belief in the goodness of animal protein and obsession with meat is killing Americans. As a ChineseAmerican, I experienced this belief and obsession firsthand. Of course, I ate meats when I grew up in Taiwan, but I had not seen any cheese until I came to America in 1975, since there was no dairy in the Chinese diet for 5,000 years until in the last 30 years, with the introduction of western fast foods. So what happened to Chinese health in the last 50 years? Dr. T. Colin Campbell reported in his best-selling book, The China Study, that when he visited China in the 1960s, heart disease, cancer and dia-

betes were almost unheard of. Now? The Chinese have had a huge rise in their rate of diabetes, from 2.6 to 9.7 percent in just a decade—and close to 5 million die from cancer every year. During that time they have had a considerable rise in the amount of pork, chicken, milk and oil consumed. The Japanese have likewise seen a huge rise in diabetes, leading their ministry of health to release a report that this is due to the increase in meat consumption and decreased fruit consumption. But not only is the animal-based diet killing them, the conversion of more traditional plant-based to more meat-based diet is also causing huge environmental challenges like water conservation. For every hamburger consumed, 660 gallons of water is needed to produce the meat in that quarter-pound burger—that’s equal to showering for two months. How many gallons of water does it take to make animal by-products? It takes 477 gallons to make 1 carton of eggs, 900 gallons for 1 block of cheese, and a whopping 1,000 gallons for 1 gallon of milk. The average American now eats 209 pounds of meat a year. The wellknown Markegard model estimated it will take 3.7 billion acres of grazing land to feed the U.S. their annual meat consumption.

It looks like we do need to rethink our diet to transform the world and help save the planet. What do you recommend to start the change to a more plant-based diet? Recently I read two very important books on the goodness of the plant-based diet.

In The Alzheimer’s Solution, two neurologists from Loma Linda University Medical Center’s Brain Health and Alzheimer’s Prevention Program pointed out the diet is scientifically proved to help prevent and reverse cognitive decline. The other book, The Telomere Effect, explains the plantbased diet can help lengthen the telomeres at the end of chromosomes, which in turn helps one live younger, healthier and longer. For those people who wish to change the eating habit, first, eat a lot more whole plants in their natural forms. Plan every meal around these health-promoting foods. Shoot for more than 80 percent of all calories in every meal from whole plants. Second, keep fat calories from both plants and animals below 20 percent of total calories consumed. In this month, while we are celebrating the Earth Day, please also pause and think about how much water you could save when you decide to eat that bean-based veggie burger, vegetable soup without chicken, salads without cheese, or cereal with almond milk. You may begin to view these animals from another angle, not as the food source, but as fellow animals that share the space on this planet. But, the greatest reward is the much-needed sustainability for current and future generations of fellow humans and animals. Steve Liu will be holding a workshop on April 28. Touching the Earth The Healing Powers of Going Barefoot by Martin Zucker

M

elanie Monteith, of San Diego, California, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 24 and plagued by symptoms for 14 years. Simple daily tasks became challenging. She relied on walking aids and walls to keep from falling. Eventually, she quit her job. Every day tested her survival skills. Then, in late 2017, Monteith tried grounding and it changed her life. Grounding, also called Earthing, refers to the discovery of major health benefits from sustained contact with the Earth’s natural and subtle electric charge. Recent research published in the Journal of Inflammation, Integrative Medicine:

A Clinician’s Journal, Neonatology and Health indicates that grounding stabilizes the physiology in many ways, drains the body of inflammation, pain and stress, and generates greater well-being. Grounding can be as simple as going barefoot in nature, including the backyard, for 30 to 60 minutes once or twice a day on surfaces like grass, soil, gravel, stone and sand. If this isn’t practical, special grounding mats and pads are available online for convenient indoor use while sitting or sleeping; people with compromised health often benefit from more time being grounded. The activity restores a primordial

electric connection with the Earth that has been lost with modern lifestyles. We wear shoes with insulating, synthetic soles and live and work elevated above the ground. These overlooked lifestyle factors may contribute to increasing global rates of chronic illnesses. Grounding revitalizes us, akin to charging a weak battery, because our bodies operate electrically and our movements and thoughts are based on electrical signals. We are bioelectric beings. Eighteen years of grounding research in a variety of indoor settings, plus grassroots feedback from around the world, clearly show that our bodies operate more effectively when grounded. We sleep better, have less pain, more energy and even look better. Here are some of the documented benefits.

Reduction of chronic inflammation “Inflammation is intimately linked to most chronic and aging-related diseases,” says Gaétan Chevalier, Ph.D., a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego, who has conducted multiple grounding studies. “Grounding seems to be nature’s way to reduce inflammation.”

Enhanced blood flow Thick, sludgy blood is a common feature of diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Several grounding studies have demonstrated a significant decrease in blood viscosity and enhanced blood flow. “Grounding represents a potent circulation booster; a simple, yet profound preventive and therapeutic strategy,” says integrative cardiologist Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, of Manchester, Connecticut, co-author of the book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever!

Decreased stress Tracy Latz, a medical doctor and integrative psychiatrist in Mooresville, North Carolina, has found, “Patients with anxi-

ety issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and depression, often benefit from grounding.”

Improved vagus nerve function The vagus nerve connects with and regulates key organs, including the lungs, heart and intestines. In one study, doctors at the Penn State Children’s Hospital, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, grounded hospitalized premature infants and documented improved vagal function that could potentially boost resilience and reduce complications. “These babies have a lot of health challenges,” observes Dr. Charles Palmer, former chief of the center’s division of newborn medicine. “It seems that they are more relaxed when grounded.” More research is needed. Within a few months of grounding both day and night, Monteith’s disease symptoms receded dramatically. Her balance and stability improved when standing and walking. She sleeps more deeply and has more energy. An eye issue for which there is no drug subsided. She says her health continues to improve and she looks forward to living each day. Troy Baker, a recovery consultant for special populations and chief program officer of the nonprofit Adapt Functional Movement Center, in Carlsbad, California, who has been overseeing Monteith’s exercise training schedule, has observed a reduction in the effects of multiple sclerosis since she started grounding. “Her body is more fluid, not as stiff. She moves much better, with increased energy and stamina.” For more information on grounding, visit EarthingInstitute.net. Martin Zucker, a former Associated Press correspondent, has written about alternative medicine for 40 years and is co-author of the book Earthing.

Foods that Go Easy on Water

Changing Our Diet to Cool the Climate

Good Food Choices Enable Global Health by Judith Fertig

T

hree years ago, the New York Times added a new word to the world’s food vocabulary: Climatarian (n.) A diet whose primary goal is to reverse climate change. This includes eating locally produced food (to reduce energy spent in transportation), choosing pork and poultry instead of beef and lamb (to limit gas emissions), and using every part of ingredients (apple cores, cheese rinds, etc.) to limit food waste. Changing our food choices to support this model can have a ripple effect. Research-

ers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in a 2017 study published in the journal Climatic Change, looked at how diets impact personal health, the healthcare system and climate. They found that adopting a more plant-based diet reduces the relative risk of coronary heart disease, colorectal cancer and Type 2 diabetes by 20 to 40 percent. National annual health care costs could drop from $93 billion to $77 billion. Direct greenhouse gas emissions could annually drop 489 to 1,821 pounds per person. Such an approach involves consider-

Hydroponic greens are hands-down winners. The Shelton Family Farm, near Whittier, North Carolina, weekly produces 10,000 to 12,000 heads of hydroponically grown Bibb lettuce. The controlled environment and carefully engineered nutrient delivery systems maximize all resources. “It’s an enclosed system that runs 24/7, and it’s highly efficient from a waterusage standpoint because we recycle the water,” says William Shelton Jr., a fourthgeneration family farmer. “The only water that’s actually consumed is what’s taken up and transpired through the plants.” In a moderate climate, energy costs to recycle the water and keep the plants at an even temperature are moderate, as well. Dry-tilled heirloom tomatoes, okra, melons and quinoa are drought-tolerant and only use available rainfall.

Foods that Go Easy on Greenhouse Gases

Plants beat meat. “Livestock farming produces from 20 to 50 percent of all manmade greenhouse gas emissions,” says nutritionist and climate activist Jane Richards, of GreenEatz, in Mountain View, California. “You can reduce your footprint by a quarter by cutting down on red meats such as beef and lamb.” An exception is the vegetarian staple of rice. According to researchers at Project Drawdown, a climate solutions organization in Sausalito, California, rice cultivation is responsible for at least 10 percent of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and up to 19 percent of global methane emissions. New farming techniques, like mid-season draining of the rice paddies, could cut methane emissions by at least 35 percent. Richards notes, “Meat, cheese and eggs have the highest carbon footprint; fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts, much lower. The carbon footprint of a vegetarian

diet is about half that of a meat-lover’s diet.” Root crops such as carrots, radishes, potatoes and beets have a lower carbon footprint than above-ground plants due to less food waste. A beautiful beet is easier to grow than a bell pepper that blemishes more easily. Seasonal, regional fruit, vegetables, herbs and honey have a lighter carbon impact because they are transported shorter distances. Usually what grows best in a region and is consumed locally is also best for the climate. Foods naturally suited to their environment grow and taste better, and are packed with more nutrients, reports Sustainable Table, an educational nonprofit that builds healthy communities through sustainable eating habits (SustainableTable.org).

Hopeful Developments

New agricultural developments can also benefit our climate environment. According to Project Drawdown research, perennial grains and cereals could be pivotal in reaching soil, carbon and energy targets. The Land Institute, in Salina, Kansas, has been working with the Rodale Institute, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, to develop a perennial wheat that would not have to be planted from seed each year. This would save soil, carbon and both human and machine energy. Kernza, a new perennial grain proven to prosper in natural grasslands like the Great Plains, is not yet widely distributed. Maria Speck, author of Simply Ancient Grains, advises, “With up to 15-foot-long roots, it can be harvested for five years and uses less fertilizer than conventional wheat. Kernza tastes almost like a cross between rice and wheat—sweet, grassy, mesmerizing.” Michael Pollan, author of Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual and creator of the film Food, Inc., suggests we keep it simple: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” Climatarians would add another guideline—eat as locally as possible. Easy Ways to Green It Up

by Avery Mack

L

iving green isn’t difficult or expensive. Start small, one room at a time.

In the Kitchen Defrosting trays have been available for a while, and although they aren’t a miracle solution, they are eco-friendly and easy to clean; thawing most meats, seafood and vegetables usually takes just 30 to 60 minutes. It’s one way to avoid using the microwave. Most cutting boards of sustainable bamboo or cork originate in China, creating a big carbon footprint. Glass boards are breakable and hard on knives. Consider planet-friendly boards made of recycled cardboard and food-grade plastic combined with flax husks. A countertop convection oven set about 25 degrees lower circulates heated air to cook food 25 to 30 percent faster and more evenly than a conventional oven; it uses less energy and has fewer emissions. Foods come out crispier, which also makes for great veggie chips. A conventional oven

is still best for soufflés, breads or cakes that rise as they bake. Replace chemical-coated nonstick pans, disposable parchment paper and aluminum foil with reusable, eco-friendly, U.S. Food and Drug Administrationapproved silicone mats. They are easy to clean, affordable and available in many sizes and shapes. Run the dishwasher when full and at night. Off-peak hours won’t cut the electric bill, but are more efficient for the power plant, reducing its energy footprint. Skip the garbage disposal to save water and energy. Use food waste for plantnurturing compost. Plastics numbered 1, 3, 6 or 7 are prone to leaching into food or drinks. Recycle or repurpose those already on hand to store craft items, small toys or office supplies.

On the Floor Keep floors clean and healthy by leaving shoes at the door. They track in dirt, pesticides, chemicals, pet waste and

leaked fluids from vehicles. Slippers or socks with a grip sole keep feet warm and prevent falls. Bamboo flooring is sustainable and eco-friendly, but is also shipped from China. Using local products reduces shipping costs, supports American businesses and can give the home a unique design. “Logs salvaged from the bottom of the Penobscot River turn into flooring, ceilings and accent walls,” advises Tom Shafer, coowner of Maine Heritage Timber, in Millinocket. “The cold temperature preserves the wood and gives it a natural patina. It’s now available in peel-and-stick, affordable planks called timberchic. Planks have an eco-friendly, UV-cured finish.” For more flooring tips, see Tinyurl. com/Eco-FriendlyFloors.

In the Bathroom

Instead of air freshener sprays, hang petand child-safe plants. Use fast-drying towels up to four times before washing. Hand towels see more frequent use, so change every other

day. Longer wear makeup stays longer on a washcloth; to prevent reintroducing germs to the face, use a facecloth only once. All-natural cleaning products are easy to find or make. For some tips, see Tinyurl.com/LovelyEcoLoo.

In the Bedroom

From sheets and bedding to a fluffy robe, choose eco-friendly organic cotton in white, or colored with environmentally safe, non-metallic dyes. Blue light from a smartphone, computer, tablet or TV can foster sleeplessness. “I keep all devices out of my bedroom and block all unnatural light,” says Leslie Fischer, an eco-minded mom and entrepreneur in Chicago, who reviews mattresses for adults and babies at SustainableSlumber. com. “I sleep on a fantastic mattress that won’t fill my room with pollution.” A good pillow is a necessity. Citrus Sleep rates the Top Ten Eco Options at Tinyurl.com/NaturalPillowPicks. Mattresses should be replaced every eight years. In the U.S., an average

of 50,000 end up in landfills each day. California law requires manufacturers to create a statewide recycling program for mattresses and box springs. An $11 recycling fee, collected upon each sale, funds the Bye Bye Mattress program. Connecticut and Rhode Island also recycle them. “An alternative is extending mattress use with a topper,” says Omar Alchaboun, founder of topper-maker Kloudes, in Los Angeles.

What and Where to Recycle Find out where and what to recycle at Earth911.com. Enter the item and a zip code or call 1-800-cleanup. Going green is money-saving, environmentally wise and coming of age, which makes eco-friendly products easier to access. Paul Hawken Shares a Plan to Reverse Global Warming by Linda Sechrist

F

or author Paul Hawken, a leading environmental entrepreneur working with a coalition of research fellows, advisors and expert reviewers, the climate goal is drawdown, or reversing global warming—the point in atmospheric time when the concentration of greenhouse gases peaks and begins to decline on a year-to-year basis. Hawken edited Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, a compendium of the 100 most substantive solutions that already exist.

Are you optimistic about achieving the goal?

Why is drawdown the goal? If we don’t name the goal, we are unlikely to achieve it. To date, language like mitigation, stabilization and reduction has been used to address climate change. These goals are not particularly ambitious and will do little to preserve civilization. Those verbs are about slowing the amount of released gases, but do not reverse them. If you are going the wrong way down a road which heads straight over a cliff, slowing down is not a helpful goal. We need to turn around, and that is what drawdown research is all about.

Why and how did you do the research? We wanted to know if it was game over with respect to global warming, or could we reverse the buildup of greenhouse gases with techniques and practices already underway? We gathered a qualified and diverse group of 70 researchers from around the world to identify, research and model the 100 most substantive existing solutions. They modeled the impact the solutions will have if they continue to scale in a rigorous, but reasonable way, and what the cost and profits would be. All carbon data was based on peer-reviewed science. Economic data came from respected international institutions like the World Bank. The goal of the 36

for breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty while mitigating emissions by curbing population growth. Ranked seventh, family planning, particularly in low-income countries, impacts world population. For women to have children by choice rather than chance and to plan their family size and spacing is a matter of autonomy and dignity. Together, these two solutions would account for significant reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050. The United Nations estimates a difference between the high and median population projections in 2050 of 10.8 billion versus 9.7 billion. The difference is almost entirely determined by availability of family planning.

book was to present the findings and describe the solutions in ways that fascinated and informed, accompanied by images that enlivened and inspired.

What are the top 10 solutions? The top 10 solutions, in order, are: refrigerant management, wind turbines, reduced food waste, plant-rich diet, tropical forests protection, educating girls, family planning, solar farms, silvopasture—the intentional combination of trees, forage plants and livestock as an integrated, intensively managed system— and rooftop solar. All 100 are listed at Drawdown.org/solutions-summary-by-rank.

Did any of the solutions surprise you? None of the solutions surprised us, but their rankings did. For example, educating girls, number six, has a dramatic bearing on global warming. Women with more years of education have fewer, healthier, children and actively manage their reproductive health. Educated females realize higher wages and greater upward mobility, contributing to economic growth. Education is the most powerful lever available

NaturalTucson.com

Drawdown is not about optimism, hope or pessimism. It is a reality project. The science on climate change is amazing, if not stunning. It is the best problem statement humanity has ever created, which I see as a gift, not a curse. Global warming is feedback from the atmosphere. The Earth is a system, and any system that does not incorporate feedback fails. It holds true for our body, ecosystems, social systems and economic systems. The knowledge of global warming and its potential impacts is creating huge breakthroughs in energy, transport, agriculture, housing, urbanization and materials. If it wasn’t for the science of climate change, we would be destroying our planet faster than we already are. Focusing repeatedly on the problem does not solve the problem. Diagnosis is not prognosis unless we give up. The science of what will happen if we do not act has been here for a long time. What Drawdown points out is that humanity is on the case. The plan we refer to in the book’s subtitle is not our plan; we found a plan being activated by the collective intelligence of humanity. This is a different story than one of gloom and doom. It is a story of innovation, creativity and generosity—that is who we are. Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings.

A Bucket Plan to Go with Your Bucket List by Anne Ramirez

T

he baby boomers have re-defined everything they’ve touched, from music to marriage to parenting and, more lately, to what “old” means—60 is the new 50. Longer, healthier living, however, can put greater stress on the sustainability of retirement assets. There is no easy answer to this challenge, but let’s begin by discussing one idea: a bucket approach to building a retirement income plan. The Bucket Strategy can take two forms—either the Expenses strategy or the Timeframe strategy.

The Expenses Bucket Strategy With this approach, you segment your retirement expenses into three buckets: • Basic Living Expenses—food, rent, utilities, etc. • Discretionary Expenses—vacations, dining out, etc. • Legacy Expenses—assets for heirs and charities This strategy pairs appropriate investments to each bucket. For instance, Social Security might be assigned to the Basic Living Expenses bucket. If this source of income falls short, you might consider whether a fixed annuity can help fill the gap. With this approach, you are attempting to match income sources to essential expenses. The guarantees of an annuity contract depend on the issuing company’s claims-paying ability. Annuities have contract limitations, fees and charges, including account and administrative fees, underlying investment management fees, mortality and expense fees, and charges for optional benefits. Most annuities have surrender fees that are usually highest if you take out the money in the initial years of the annuity contact. Withdrawals and income payments are taxed as ordinary income. If a withdrawal is made prior to age 59½, a 10 percent federal income tax penalty may apply (unless an exception applies).

For the Discretionary Expenses bucket, you might consider investing in top-rated bonds and large-cap stocks that offer the potential for growth and have a long-term history of paying a steady dividend. Finally, if you have assets you expect to pass on, you might position some of them in more aggressive investments, such as small-cap stocks and international equity. International investments carry additional risks, which include differences in financial reporting standards, currency exchange rates, political risk unique to a specific country, foreign taxes and regulations, and the potential for illiquid markets. These factors may result in greater share price volatility.

The Timeframe Bucket Strategy This approach creates buckets based on different timeframes and assigns investments to each. For example: • 1-5 Years: This bucket funds your near-term expenses. It may be filled with cash and cash alternatives, such as money market accounts. Money market funds are considered low-risk securities but they are not backed by any government institution, so it’s possible to lose money. Money held in money market funds is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency. Money market funds seek to preserve the value of your investment at $1 a share. However, it is possible to lose money by investing in a money market fund. Money market mutual funds are sold by prospectus. Please consider the charges, risks, expenses and investment objectives carefully before investing. A prospectus containing this and other information about the investment company can be obtained from your financial professional. Read it carefully before you invest or send money. • 6-10 Years: This bucket is designed to help replenish the funds in the 1-5 Years bucket. Investments might include a diversified, intermediate, top-rated bond portfolio. Diversification is an approach to help manage investment risk. It does not eliminate the risk of loss if security prices decline. • 11-20 Years: This bucket may be filled with investments such as large-cap stocks that offer the potential for growth. • 21+ Years: This bucket might include longer-term investments such as small-cap and international stocks. Each bucket is set up to be replenished by the next longerterm bucket. This approach can offer flexibility to provide replenishment at more opportune times. For example, if stock prices move higher, you might consider replenishing the 6-10 Years bucket even though it’s not quite time. A bucket approach to pursue your income needs is not the only way to build an income strategy, but it’s one approach to consider as you prepare for retirement. The Cranial Wave, Spirit and Consciousness

A

by Juliana Ashe

t various times in our lives and for many reasons, we all experience stress or pain, be it physical or emotional. Getting to the heart of the issue takes focus, intention, desire and direction. Sometimes we have all the pieces except the direction. How do we direct our consciousness to experience relief? Healers learn many modalities which are wonderful and useful tools. Creating a deeper connection with spirit and supporting our total energy field is an intentional alignment. It is our inherent birthright to use and apply our gifts and realign ourselves with a sense of peace and well-being. Having an expanded view of the Cranial Wave, Spirit and Consciousness and applying that awareness can help relieve stress so we can feel calm, clear and connected. The Cranial Wave is an intelligent form of communication. This intelligence is more akin to feeling and might be called the life-stream of the spirit. It detects what the body needs and can be felt in meditation. Our cranial wave is driven by spirit. The cranial wave is the spirit’s electromagnetic field of energy, chi or prana, which governs the body and continues beyond physicality. Spirit is the measurable electrical field of the body. It is a body of awareness, which is conscious. Some healers can see and connect with a portion of this holographic field of movement—of which we are all a part. Spirit is more than personality, wants and needs. We can expand and direct that field with our desire to feel that which is beyond our self-serving identity. As we open ourselves to this field of awareness, this offers direction from spirit— the energy one needs to feel calm, clear and balanced. Consciousness is the Great Central Self which translates awareness and knows our personality attachments to all things. It observes and knows The Field. It transcends small self-awareness, beyond the instinctual programing or default setting of physicality. One’s emotional programing or personality identifies with thinking. It is designed to compartmentalize experience into increments, or time. Primarily, the way that we think creates a linear production of reality. We are more than the way that we think. Consciousness is presence and is more akin to feeling or move-

ment. We are both receivers and transmitters for incoming and outgoing emanations. The Field is the lighter portion of the body. It holds every electrical impulse of our psychological or emotional construction of reality. The Field determines the shape of the dense physical body or the coarser, weighted possibilities of thought. We can alter the body-mind, through spirit, when we expand consciousness. Many practitioners have committed their lives to this endeavor. There are many methods one can learn to feel more connected to an inner sense of well-being. Living a stressfree life allows us to feel the joy in living truly blessed. Juliana Ashe was a licensed cosmetologist for over 20 years and is trained in various techniques of healing. Gardening ASANAS Yoga Poses to Stay Pain-Free by Marlaina Donato

ardening is good for body and soul, but long hours and repetitive movements can negatively impact even the fittest body. While stiffness and pain patterns might manifest in the lower back, shoulders, legs and hands, performing a few yoga poses can lessen pain, increase flexibility, boost stamina and prevent injury. “Every action needs a counter action for structural balance to be maintained. Repetitive movements can tighten fascia, restrict movement and compromise nerve impulses,” explains Asheville, North Carolina, yoga teacher and back care specialist Lillah Schwartz, author of Healing Our Backs with Yoga: An Essential Guide to Back Pain Relief. “What goes into spasm tends to remain in spasm,” observes Schwartz, who has helped many people overcome back pain and other chronic structural issues. Practicing yoga before, during or after spending time outside also promotes mind-body awareness which helps us tune into our body’s natural rhythms and prevent physical problems in the first place. Here are some basics to consider when working in the garden.

Be Aware

Great agility and strong muscles cannot compensate for being in one position too long, over-reaching or fatigue. “Listen to your

Enjoy Being Outside

Bringing mindfulness to garden work not only helps prevent injury, but helps make it a more enjoyable experience. Here are a few more tips.

body’s messages such as, ‘It’s time for a rest,’ or, ‘That’s too heavy,’” recommends Schwartz. Remember to take regular breaks to rest, stretch and drink water.

Strike a Pose

Doing yoga regularly will condition the body, but incorporating asanas, or poses, while gardening can be both a fun and practical way to avoid overstressing certain muscle groups and keep the spine and hamstrings supple. Using props in the garden environment such as fences, a wall or a chair can provide convenient support. Feel free to perform all poses before or after gardening, and all except numbers one and five in the garden.

irst, 27 indigenous elders from 23 North American tribes, two African tribes, a Tibetan Buddhist and a Sami from Finland gathered at Turtle Mountain, in Dunseith, North Dakota, in 1994. Recently, 13 elders from 10 tribes from Russia, Columbia, South Africa and the U.S. gathered in Kauai, Hawaii. Other such gatherings, too, are participating in a shared prophecy supporting world salvation. They offer humanity four sacred gifts of wisdom rooted in their life experiences. This is our invitation to receive them.

Power of Healing

Power to Forgive the Unforgivable

Power of Hope

Forgiveness is releasing ourselves from the prison of pain, hurt or mistreatment. It takes courage and self-love to do this. The reward of this act is freedom to use our energy to create what is life-giving to our self and the lives of those we touch.

Power of Unity

This is a time for us all to become and remain united and steadfast, repairing the world from the misuse of power and greed. When we choose to stand in the circle of unity, there is strength. Each of us has an important part to play in the circle of life to sustain precious relationships among people, Earth and spirit for ourselves, our children and future generations.

NaturalTucson.com

Indigenous elders tailor their healing practices to the whole human being, using good medicine, defined as anything or anyone that brings into positive alignment the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. Healing can take many forms, based on tradition, the healer, patient and nature, yet four basic elements or practices are consistent: listening, supportive relationships, unconditional love and committing to creative, positive action.

Hope springs from the choice to tap into an infinite energy source. It may not be understood by modern science, but indigenous wisdom keepers behold an inner certainty of something bigger than us all. When we open ourselves to hope, it is possible to release the pressure and desire to try to know something about everything, and instead free our imagination to create expansive possibilities. Anita Sanchez, Ph.D., is a transformational leadership consultant, speaker, coach and author of the new book, The Four Sacred Gifts: Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times, from which this was adapted.
