HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET

Styling & Photography by EchoStarMaker.com

H

appy August! As the summer is winding down and families are getting ready to send the kids back to school, Natural Awakenings is taking a good look at children and parenting—they are our future, after all. Every parent wants to do the best they can for their child, and that can be especially hard when they’re struggling in school or at home with no clear explanation. Perhaps they need more than just a standard vision test? Meet Dr. Amy Thomas on page 20, a board-certified optometrist who uses her expertise most notably to guide children in vision therapy, creating major changes in their learning abilities, hobbies and attitudes. In our feature on simplified parenting (page 26), Deborah Shouse dives into the “less is more” method of raising happy and healthy children. And Jodi Hardy has great tips for raising healthy children who understand Holly Baker, publisher that their feelings are important, communication is key and how to respect themselves and others (page 28). Of course, to be a good parent, we must also practice self-care and keep ourselves healthy and balanced. Multilevel healing is an important idea to consider, if you haven’t already. “Embracing all dimensions of well-being”, as explained on page 22, can drastically affect the outcomes of a treatment or wellness protocol. “Only 20 percent of healing comes from the treatment agent the doctor applies. A full 80 percent of the healing potential, which lies dormant in everyone, comes from constructing a meaningful treatment response unique to you,” explains Dr. Wayne Jonas. We received a great response from our local community in regards to personal, multilevel healing stories. On page 24, hear the unique and inspiring ways that Danielle Dvorak and David Yrigoyen used alternative healing methods to get well when other modalities weren’t cutting it, plus an Akashic perspective from Linda Joy Stone. Be well,

New Biofeedback Clinic Opens in Tucson

B

iofeedback Therapist Anna Marie Blessing, B.Msc, CNC has recently opened a new Biofeedback Clinic in Tucson, after operating clinics in Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles, California. New patients are welcome. Blessing’s gentle Biofeedback Treatments effectively treat people suffering from fibromyalgia, anxiety, asthma, allergies, food sensitivities and thyroid and autoimmune conditions. She treats what diet and nutrition cannot fix. “While an important piece in healing, if one does not treat the underlying cause of all health conditions—allergies and Anna Marie Blessing sensitivities—it is like swimming upstream,” says Blessing. According to her colleague, Jacqueline Krohn, M.D., from her book Allergy Relief and Prevention, “Allergies are not just a nuisance to be ignored until they can no longer be denied—they constitute a health problem that must be treated. Untreated allergies can lead to more serious health problems as we get older. Blood pressure problems, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia and other degenerative diseases can develop as a result of untreated allergies. If we do not take the time to treat allergies and to get well now, we will have to take the time to be sick later.” Blessing says that all people who come into her practice are (unknowingly) allergic to: amino acids, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. Once she treats the nutrients, 70 percent of people’s symptoms dissipate. Location: 4400 E. Broadway Blvd., Ste. 600-D, Tucson. For more information, call 520-314-6894, email Info@TucsonBiofeedback.com or visit TucsonBiofeedback.com. See ads, pages 11 and 13.

Psychotherapy with Joan Silver

J

oan Silver is a licensed Marriage Family Therapist who provides counseling to individuals, couples and families. Therapy is a useful tool that can help with a range of issues, like anxiety, sleep, relationships and trauma, because it addresses not just the symptoms but also the causes of one’s “issues”. Psychological trauma can also trigger physical symptoms, like stomachaches, headaches, sleeping problems and ulcers. “I know that going to therapy for the first time can be quite frightening since many of us grew up being told that Joan Silver ‘private’ stuff shouldn’t be discussed outside the family, especially with a perfect stranger,” says Silver. “The best thing about dealing with your own stuff is that, if you have kids, it helps you teach them a better way. Look how many decades later we’re still dealing with the fallout of that ‘private’ method.” The most serious drawback of “stuffing” feelings and traumas is that they can pile up and explode later. Many people avoid talking about their feelings; however, repressing or ignoring one’s feelings doesn’t make the feelings go away. One of the benefits of therapy is that the client receives a “new pair of glasses” which helps in understanding self and others. Therapy is different for everyone, however research shows that it’s incredibly effective in helping people manage their lives. Location: 170 N. La Canada Dr., Ste. 30C, Green Valley. For more information, call 520398-7272, email Joan@SerenityFirstCounseling.com or visit SerenityFirstCounseling.com. August 2018

Organically Clean Carpets with Pima Cleanpro

P

ima Cleanpro offers an organic, eco-friendly, kid- and pet-friendly cleaning service for carpet, area rugs, upholstery, tile and grout. The system does not wet the backing of carpet causing mold and bacteria to grow, dries in less than two hours and is quiet enough for babies to sleep through. “Many of the carpet and upholstery Steve Nelson products in use today, besides being harmful to the environment, are animal fat or silicone-based detergents and soaps, and they leave tacky residues in the carpet time and time again,” says Steven Nelson, owner and operator of Pima Cleanpro, LLC. “These residues promote rapid re-soiling and should be removed from your carpet. The Cleanpro Cleaning Solution actually breaks down and removes those residues from previous cleanings to maximize the length of time your carpets stay clean.” The family owned and operated company aims to improve indoor air quality by removing allergens. Due to the low-moisture system, carpets stay cleaner longer, with no oversaturation of carpets. For more information, call 520-954-2119, email PimaCleanpro@ gmail.com or visit PimaCleanpro.com.

Loft Cinema Presents Eating Animals

T

he Loft Cinema will host a screening of Eating Animals at 7:30 p.m., August 14. Based on the bestselling book by Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated by co-producer Natalie Portman, Eating Animals is an urgent, eye-opening look at the environmental, economic and public health consequences of factory farming. Tracing the history of food production in the U.S., the film charts how farming has gone from local and sustainable to a corporate Frankenstein monster that offers cheap eggs, meat and dairy at a steep cost: the exploitation of animals; the risky use of antibiotics and hormones; and the pollution of our air, soil and water. Spotlighting farmers who have pushed back against industrial agriculture with more humane practices, Eating Animals offers attainable, commonsense solutions to a growing crisis, while making the case that ethical farming is not only an animal rights issue but one that affects every aspect of our lives. Location: 3233 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-795-0844, email Info@LoftCinema.org or visit LoftCinema.org. See ad, page 23.

Guidebook for Self-Care and Spiritual Seekers Now Available

A

uthor JC Cochrane recently released Temporarily Closed, a fresh, comprehensive guidebook designed for not only beginners but also seasoned self-care and spiritual seekers, available on Amazon.com. The book is a standalone guidebook as well as a companion to Cochrane’s 2016 memoir, Eleven Days, chronicling her own spiritual maintenance. Cochrane is not the first author to share the obvious—we often don’t spend enough time on ourselves. As our lives unfold, they seem to pick up pace, and when exploring careers, having families, getting married, divorced, becoming sick or well, setting goals, losing loved ones, finding new friends, getting hurt, etc., we can lose track of our sacred selves in both the good times and bad. We know that eating right, resting, staying calm, meditating, working out, doing yoga, sleeping well, setting intentions and goals, getting educated or seeking advice from those who have the information to help us along are all good ideas, yet the busyness in our lives halts the unfolding of our sacred selves, again and again. Here, Cochrane gives us a simple version of how to temporarily close for self-care and spiritual maintenance. In her memoir, Eleven Days (also available on Amazon), Cochrane tells the story of how she went “from 35 million to food stamps”. Her family went from living in a gated home perched on a mountaintop in Tucson, to life in a beat-up rental, without job security and on food stamps. Thanks to her many readers and their Amazon reviews/comments, questions via email and social media, Cochrane was inspired to create the guidebook, Temporarily Closed, where she shows how she got grounded during that difficult time. For more information, call 520-241-4642, email JC@CochraneCentral.com or visit JCCochrane.com.

Ayahuasca Gatherings Aid the Soul

A

yahuasca, also known as “The Vine of the Soul,” is an indigenous brew that has been making its way into the Western world for quite some time. In response to the migration of the medicine into the U.S., including Tucson, Inner Journeys Holistic Healing Center offers services to those preparing for their first ceremony. Traditionally, Ayahuasca is prepared by utilizing the Ayahuasca vine and Chacruna leaves. It often times helps individuals “remember” who they truly are and why they are here. Additionally, Ayahuasca is currently being studied by the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS.org) and helping those who are suffering from PTSD, depression and anxiety. There have been countless anecdotal reports on how this ancient Peruvian approach has assisted so many in what is thought to be hundreds of hours of therapy in just one ceremony. The staff at Inner Journeys is experienced and dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment to those who are considering taking their first drink, and offering ongoing individual and group support for the long haul.

Visceral and Craniosacral Therapies for Babies and Children

B

abies are sometimes born into the world with health challenges developed in utero. They are equally affected emotionally by any trauma experienced within the womb or during labor. Their bodies may evolve early on, with a variety of symptoms suggesting a certain degree of disturbance, constriction and misalignment is affecting their development. Babies and children are very fluid in their bodies and respond well to both visceral and craniosacral work. Both therapies are extremely gentle and use a combination of manual and energetic techniques. These therapies are able to decrease stress and angst, which can initiate or support the creation of other systemic conditions. A child’s body will often times heal more quickly with treatment and may be a very proactive investment for that child’s future. Some of the conditions which are treated for babies and children include: colic, sleep disturbance, fussiness, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, neurological conditions, mobilSylvia Boyed ity, digestive conditions, headaches and migraines. Young people are also susceptible these days to head injuries due to sports, and intense tightness and misalignment in their neck and shoulders, being on the phone and computer much of their lives. The neck and shoulders moving constantly forward and angled downward, create changes in the spine that may cause headaches or head pressure, resulting in other conditions, such as vertigo, tinnitus and cognitive changes. Cranio Sacral and Visceral Manipulation Therapies are very effective in relaxing the spine, calming the nervous system and decreasing pressure in the various cavities of the body. Sylvia Boyed, MA, LMT, CST is an energetic bodyworker in Tucson, working in the bodywork field for 11 years. She treats all of the systems of the body, for all ages, with specializations in joint reconstruction, head injuries, migraine headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, hyperactivity, learning disabilities and anxiety. ince 1895, chiropractic has stood the test of time. Fast forward to 2018, many chiropractors have integrated physiotherapy, nutrition, acupuncture and more. For example, someone has a sprained ankle. After an examination and possibly X-rays, a chiropractor functionally actives any neurologic imbalances, then performs very gentle mobilization if needed. They will do interferential with ice and elevation, do acupuncture or Low Level Laser Therapy and apply Kinesiotape. In addition nutritionally, they might prescribe joint repair supplements, arnica and biofreeze. Anti-inflammatory herbs of ginger and turmeric are also very helpful. Severe sprains may require immobilization and pharmacologic medications initially. Once swelling is reduced and some stability is achieved, other modalities like diathermy EMS, massage and Graston are used along with strength, flexibility and proprioceptive rehabilitation. This integrative approach can and is applied to any musculoskeletal injury, such as whiplash, knee, hip, shoulder, lower back, sciatica and more. Winterhaven Health Center prides itself on using an integrative approach for faster and stronger recoveries. Holistic Healing from the Inside Out and Outside In

I

ncreasingly, from diverse sources, we are coming to the realization that we are primarily made up of energy with very small amounts of matter. It doesn’t seem that way as we look about us, but quantum physics tells us otherwise. Early experiments with these tiny bits of matter called quarks revealed some interesting facts. At the quantum level, there really isn’t any distinction between objects. Energy flows freely between all objects, including humans. Also, and more importantly for healing, the observer of the energy field can change or direct the flow of the energy particles by thinking about how and where they want the field to flow, i.e., change the outcome. These results have led to several concepts utilized in energy or Quantum Field Healing (QFH). One is the Law of Attraction, with the primary idea being that we attract what we focus on. If we dwell on being ill, we attract more of the same. If we dwell on health and wholeness, seeing ourselves as whole, without disease, we are more likely to recover and maintain wellness. QFH also aligns with Traditional Chinese Medicine’s belief that disease is the result of energy flow imbalances or blockages. If these concepts resonate with us, and especially if we believe that there is a “Universal Source” of our energies, it is important to choose health practitioners that share our beliefs and focus on wellness and basic energy rebalancing, rather than illness and the symptomatic end results of disease. Dr. Suzanne Pear is a clinical nurse aesthetician and light healer-in-training. Ozone Therapy for Epstein-Barr Virus re you tired all the time? Do you have ongoing aches and pains? Does it feel like no matter what you do, you don’t feel rested? Perhaps you have Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and it has been activated or re-activated. About 75 percent of the population has EBV. EBV is a contagious infection that causes infectious mononucleosis as an acute reaction and chronic fatigue as a long-term or chronic reaction. The illness is spread by casual contact, usually via saliva. Mono has an incubation period of four to six weeks. The vast majority of adults have antibodies against EBV, meaning they have been infected with the virus and are immune to mono. Fatigue, severe sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and fever are common symptoms of mono. It can be associated with an enlarged spleen and liver inflammation (hepatitis). Chronic EBV can feel like: being tired all the time, even with plenty of sleep; still getting feverish on and off and have an occasional sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and muscle aches; and feeling unwell or like something isn’t right, but no doctor can find what’s wrong. Traditionally, it’s recommended to stay home, rest and drink plenty of fluids. But most of us don’t have four to six weeks to lay around. You may be prescribed an antiviral, but it doesn’t really help clear out the virus. EBV, like the common cold, needs to run its course. An alternative to drugs and bedrest to treat EBV, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes is Ozone. Ozone mixed into the blood will increase the body’s cytokines, which will disrupt the cell walls of the virus and shut down its replication. All viruses can encode themselves into our DNA, so we cannot 100 percent eliminate them. However, we can decrease their numbers and let the immune system reset back to balance. This cuts back any symptoms one may have from an overload, which is what makes us sick. Ozone also supports our immune system by opening our micro-capillary bed so the whole body can get super-oxygenated. This does damage cell walls of fungus, bacteria and viruses, thereby clearing these out. Ozone is anti-inflammatory, a great detoxifier, it reduces acidity and increases energy.

Hyperloop Hyper-Speed

Innovative Shortcut to Faster Travel A Hyperloop is a proposed vacuumtube mode of passenger or freight transportation moving enclosed capsules along on thin cushions of air; it was first named in an opensource “vactrain” design released by a joint team from Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX companies. It could offer an affordable, lowcarbon and super-fast alternative to current transportation systems. Flying between Amsterdam and Paris usually takes an hour, but can be longer due to security procedures. Currently, the same trip on a Thalys railway fast train takes three hours and 17 minutes. Hyperloop passenger group and cargo capsules can theoretically travel at more than 700 miles per hour, thus making the journey in about 30 minutes. Hyperloop seems ideally suited to a small continent with many large urban centers. The Dutch team that won the SpaceX Hyperloop competition is rapidly working toward a commercial solution to connect all of Europe. Hardt Global Mobility has the backing of the Technical University of Delft, Dutch railway company Nederlandse Spoorwegen and multinational construction company BAM. August 2018

Vision Therapy: Creating a Better Outlook on Life by Suzie Agrillo

I

t never hurts our eyesight to look on the bright side of things, and Dr. Amy Thomas has a unique eye chart that reads, “Always look on the bright side of life.” As a vision therapist, she has dedicated her life to helping her patients attain optimal vision. Thomas has a strong passion for her vision therapy niche. She started Arizona Vision Therapy Center almost 10 years ago to help her patients, most of them children, to overcome any obstacles they experience. “Some children struggle with understanding the world around them,” says Thomas. “This difficulty in understanding may make a child struggle in school with homework or paying attention in the classroom. Struggling with reading, intense near work and expression of their thoughts are just a few obstacles children must overcome.” Thomas is a Board Certified Optometrist experienced in vision development and rehabilitation. She suffered from vision problems herself, but was unaware of how these problems were affecting her until she learned about them in optometry school. It was during her studies at Pacific University College of Optometry that Thomas discovered vision therapy. She noticed that a lot of the patients who went to vision therapy read, studied and interacted with the world just like her. This discovery prompted her to use vision therapy herself to improve her own skills.

What is Behavioral Vision Care?

Vision therapy is a type of physical therapy for the eyes and brain. It is a highly effective, non-surgical treatment for many common visual problems, such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, double vision, convergence insufficiency and some reading and learning problems. 20

As a developmental optometrist, Thomas has spent hundreds of hours training in this field to study the functional uses of the visual system. She uses powerful lenses, prisms and therapy that incorporates movement and mental activities to enhance visual skills in order to reduce visual stress and to rehabilitate vision problems. According to Thomas, “there are 18 visual skills, and during a regular eye exam only about three of these skills will be checked.” She asks a lot of questions to get to the root cause of the vision problem. A vision therapy program can improve spatial awareness, eye learning skills and clarity, helping to improve reading, writing and overall visual organization skills. Thomas also recently introduced sensory learning in December 2017, to help teach children how to learn. “Sensory learning involves three systems—vision, auditory and vestibular,” she explains. “The training simultaneously engages these systems with light, sound and motion. The program challenges the primary sensory systems to work together and better adapt to multisensory input, which is the foundation of attention, memory and coordinated performance. This allows the patients to reset their foundations and makes them more centered and balanced.”

Benefits of a Vision Therapy Program

It should be noted that bright children with “perfect eyesight” can still have trouble reading. Vision therapy can correct learning related visual problems that often go undetected for a lifetime. Thomas uses a series of eye movement activities as well as the use of colored and prism lenses which can further aid in the progression of the child’s success. These lenses train the brain to perceive the world around them in a different but helpful way. The activities that are performed in vision therapy once a week are repeated at home for 15 minutes, five days a week. This is practice for the eyes so that the movements can eventually become second nature. Once the child experiences these changes from the lenses and activities presented in vision therapy, the brain will adjust accordingly and be able to understand the visual cues in the world around them. Children who seem to be uncoordinated in visually demanding sports may benefit from vision therapy. Thomas explains that vision therapy can be applied to sports and athletic activities. “If you’ve got someone who plays baseball, and they are hitting the ball too soon, I can Provide lenses that change where they see the ball, so they can swing at the right time and place,” she enthuses. “Those lenses tend to improve their aim and concentration, as well as their coordination and confidence.”

“Vision affects every area of your life,” Thomas says. “Even children with 20/20 vision suffer from vision disorders. Eighty percent of your learning comes from your vision. Rereading a passage may be very frustrating for children. Vision therapy can help retrain the brain—without the need of medication—into ways that can aid the child with vision difficulties.”

Looking Better All the Time Treating a Lazy Eye

“Lazy eye” affects about 4 million people in the U.S. It occurs when one eye is used less than the other. If one eye is crossed or turns out, the individual sees double, so he or she learns to shut off or ignore that eye. If the two eyes are very different, one nearsighted and other farsighted, the same thing can occur. After a while, vision in the unused eye is reduced. Treatment for lazy eye depends on the extent of the condition, the patient’s age and the optometrist. Small children often have their dominant eye patched for several hours a day. This stimulates the use of the nondominant eye while they perform exercises such as coloring, cutting things out and tracing. “Vision therapy is an alternative to patching that is much more easily accepted by the child. It concentrates on building the coordination between the eyes so that the results last for a lifetime,” describes Thomas. “It also improves depth perception while improving the visual acuity in the non-dominant eye.”

Treating ADHD and Attention Disorders

Vision therapy improves many skills that allow a person to pay attention, including those who may have previously been diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thomas explains that vision is a complex combination of learned skills, including tracking fixation, focus change, binocular fusion and visualization. When all of these are developed, children as well as adults can sustain attention and rely less on movement to stay alert.

While Thomas specializes in working with children, she sees patients of all ages, from 6 months to over 99 years old. She assists people who have had strokes and traumatic brain injuries to get back some of their functions. Thomas is strong on education and is available to speak to parent groups. She also gives seminars in her office every month. When she’s working with students, she frequently will go to the school to speak to the child’s teachers to educate them about how the child’s vision is affecting their learning. Most of Thomas’ spare time is spent reading every article she comes across about vision therapy, so that she can increase her already impressive success rate. She notes, “I focus on the brain/body connection to fix people’s vision from any possible angle I can find.” We depend heavily on our eyes for our quality of life. Thomas is committed to her patients, and works to help them live better lives through better vision. She adds, “I love going to work every day to hear patients’ stories of the new things they are able to do they thought were impossible before. We continually hear success stories from our patients’ families about how much more peace there is at home and school.” Arizona Vision Therapy Center is located at 6602 E. Carondelet, in Tucson. Multilevel Healing Embracing All Dimensions of Well-Being by Linda Sechrist

r. Wayne Jonas’ curiosity was piqued after hearing stories of patients that have experienced healing from chronic illnesses or reclaimed well-being without following conventional medical advice. So he focused on researching dimensions of healing that Western medical schools never taught him. The rewards were radical discoveries: whole system science exploring the web of connections

within the body; the need to acknowledge an individual’s core multi-dimensions—body/ external, behavior/lifestyle, social/emotional and spiritual/mental—and what’s needed to unlock each person’s inherent capacity for health and healing. The author of How Healing Works: Get Well and Stay Well Using Your Hidden Power to Heal, Jonas concludes, “Only 20 percent of healing comes from the treatment

agent the doctor applies. A full 80 percent of the healing potential, which lies dormant in everyone, comes from constructing a meaningful treatment response unique to you. This is internal, highly personal and uses simple principles and components.” During his 40-year career, Jonas was able to observe multi-level healings with patients, as well as through other professional roles. He’s served as director of the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, a research scientist at the World Health Organization, CEO and president of the former Samueli Institute and director of the medical research fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Applying whole system science, Jonas developed the view of a patient as a veritable ecosystem. “We are more like a garden to be cultivated than a car to be fixed. Healing emerges when we support and strengthen the connections within us—body, behavior, social and spirit—making us more whole,” says Jonas. His broader approach for healing now includes the impacts of beauty, order, an optimal healing environment, connecting with nature, elements that induce an individual’s greatest meaning response, nourishment of the spiritual self, making time for joy, the roles of love and the physical presence of loved ones and a supportive social network, as well as the energetic contributions of other social interactions and emotional dimensions. For nearly 40 years, James Oschman, Ph.D., author of Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, has been conducting research in physiology and the biophysics of energy medicines worldwide, including at Cambridge University, in England, and Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio. “Medical doctors are unaware of the body’s energy field because they aren’t taught anything about it or physics in medical school. Although the vast majority believe there is no science behind energy medicine or any that proves the body even has an energy field, it is real and has been measured,” says Oschman. He’s passionate about including energy medicine in healing, and says, “To

understand the human body, health and healing, you have to look at all dimensions without any exclusions. No aspect of science, medicine or life should be left out. All medical interventions and everything you do to the body involves energy. An awareness of this can fully transform any medical approach.” Jonas experienced the energetic dimension of healing when his wife, Susan, was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Although skeptical, he tried the process of laying his hands on her while imagining a soft, white light filled with love being transmitted through the top of his head, down through his hands and into her body. “I knew of the dozens of experiments done at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. When meditating individuals put their hands around test tubes containing immune cells, the amount of infrared radiation emanating from their hands increased, which stimulated the immune cells to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy-producing molecule found in all cells. After this exposure, those cells survived better when hit with stresses such

as heat and chemical shocks,” says Jonas. “Susan said that she could feel something and fell asleep. The next day, she felt less fatigued, slept less and was more active. From then on, I cut back on travel and made sure my body—in all its physical, social and emotional dimensions—was around,” says Jonas. To help patients and doctors expand their own perspectives, Jonas has developed a healing-oriented practices and environments (HOPE) consultation protocol (DrWayneJonas.com/resources). It includes questions a doctor or patient can use to spark pivotal lifestyle changes that cover optimal healing dimensions—inner, interpersonal, behavioral and external—to evaluate measures that facilitate or hamper healing. Sincerely responding to the answers shows results. “With chronic diseases, it can almost always enhance wellness and wellbeing, and improve function, whether the disease is cured or not,” says Jonas. A Personal Healing Journey

Multilevel Healing and Self-Care

A Personal Healing Journey by Danielle Dvorak

A

t some time during my 60+ years, I’ve been diagnosed with and treated for: cancer, bone spurs, colitis, polycystic ovaries, carpal tunnel, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, spastic colon, torn cartilages, autoimmune diseases, crippling tendonitis in both elbows, a severely herniated disc in my spine, thyroid disease, three concussions (one where I lost most of my memory for a period of time), chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, multiple whiplashes of the neck, multiple food allergies and more. I am not on any medications/prescriptions, but do take supplements. Amidst all of this, I have always been physically quite active and a number of the injuries have been due to riding/jumping horses, racing cars and other competitive sports. Sounds like a body that’s been well-used and not always well taken care of, right? Wrong. Well used, yes—but mostly well taken care of, too. Earlier in life, I remember feeling betrayed by my body. I remember pushing and driving my body when it would have been kinder to stop or slow down. But, like most people in our culture, I was conditioned to go-go-go and use my body as a means to an end. Multi-level healing for me means evolving myself on all levels of my existence—mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. I believe my essential essence is energy or a spiritual being having a human experience. We exist on many levels or in multiple dimensions. Physics has proven that everything is energy. Even our physical bodies, while appearing solid, are actually just energy. In this physical dimension, the energy is vibrating much more slowly than our emotions or thoughts, which do not have physical presence. And, since we’re completely comprised of energy that’s vibrating at various frequencies, doesn’t it stand to reason that we can shift and heal any aspect of ourselves if we just learn how to work with our energies? Self-care is very important in working on multi-level healing. Not sure what “self-care” means? It’s eating a diet of organic, healthy foods, exercising often and taking time for meditation and practices that nurture and nourish yourself, such as detox baths or getting out in nature. Spending time with people who help you feel good, uplifted, calm and grounded is also key to good self-care, along with having healthy boundaries in regards to work, family and friends, and how you move through life in general. In addition to extreme self-care, I have also self-treated with sound, music, yoga, reiki, essential oils, visioning, qigong and more. Danielle L. ince I was a young child, I have always played contact sports and have been very active. This led to a series of injuries early on in life that required me to be on anti-inflammatory medications for many years, continuing into my early 20s. Because of all the meds I was given, I developed ulcers and a hiatal hernia. Then in 2008, at 25 years old, I had an injury at work that nearly broke my back. I went to the hospital for an assessment with imaging and was told that I was very lucky to be in good physical shape because it saved me from breaking my back. They gave me a script and sent me on my way. Two years later, in 2010, I experienced my first herniated disk and learned that I had scar tissue in the area of my back where the injury occurred. This was a very painful experience and it was the first time in my life that I felt vulnerable and not invincible. I couldn’t walk or use the restroom without pain and I didn’t want to take any more pills because I was already vomiting bile on a daily basis, so I looked for an alternative. That was the same year that Arizona passed Prop. 203, which allowed qualified patients in Arizona to receive their medical marijuana card. Having smoked cannabis for a long time, I knew that there were some medicinal benefits, but I didn’t know it would take me down this journey of healing. I gathered my records and sought out a doctor to get my card. After receiving my AZMMJ card, I was given some cannabis tincture to try. Within minutes, my nausea went away and I stopped throwing up bile. Cannabis was able to treat the pain and nausea, but I felt that it was still masking the symptoms. When I started working with a Naturopathic Doctor and massage therapist, I began to truly get relief and start to treat the root cause of the conditions. After some years of lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, massage and acupuncture, I was able to start noticing lasting results that have allowed me to start working out again and be active with things I couldn’t do a few years ago. Now, 8 years after my back injury and 7 years from my introduction to Dr. May and natural medicine, I have been able to fully treat my pain naturally and remove some of the scar tissue from my back with alternative medicine and body therapies. My ulcers have gone away, my hiatal hernia symptoms have subsided and I stopped getting migraines (which I had for many years from my concussions in football), and I know that these results are achievable by anyone. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself—it just needs the proper tools. Luckily, nature provides a lot of those tools. Connect with David Yrigoyen at Natural Healing Care Center, 520-323-0069. Simplified Parenting Why Less Means

or a happier family life, experts encourage parents to stay true to their own values, strengths and sense of family purpose, focusing on the wonders of their children instead of endless daily tasks. It begins with each child feeling loved.

Learn Love Languages

For Gary Chapman, Ph. D., author of The 5 Love Languages of Children: The Secret to Loving Children Effectively, understanding each child’s particular needs for touch, affirming words, quality time, gifts or acts of service is foundational to parenting success. “Other than security, a child’s deepest need is to feel loved,” says Chapman, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “If their love tank is full, children grow up emotionally healthy. Knowing a child’s preferred language helps parents effectively communicate their feelings. The question is not, ‘Do you love your children?’ It’s, ‘Do your children feel loved?’” As Chapman arrives home, his son rushes to hug him, grinning while his dad tousles his hair. Chapman’s daughter often calls out, “Dad, come into my room. I want to show you something.” This is how he communicates with each child in their 26

primary love language. Parents learn their children’s preferred communication style by observing their behavior, noticing how they express love and listening to them. They can also offer options and track results. For example: n Would you like to take the dog to the park (quality time) or for me to help you study for a test (acts of service)? n Would you like to wrestle (touch) or shop for your new shoes (gift)? “Ideally, we offer heavy doses of the child’s primary language and sprinkle in the others,” says Chapman. “Children who feel loved respond better to suggestions and discipline. They also learn how to express their feelings.”

Avoid Unreal Idealizing

Some parents carry a mental snapshot of their ideal child, perhaps envisioning a kid that is into sports or even-tempered or academically gifted. Often, that picture is

very different from the actual child. The first step to truly accepting the child is to allow ourselves to feel whatever authentic feelings pop up. The parent might think, “I love my son, but am struggling; I adore sports and may never get to share that with him.” “Give yourself time to process disappointment,” advises Susan Stiffelman, a Los Angeles marriage and family therapist, mother of one and author of Parenting Without Power Struggles: Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids While Staying Cool, Calm and Connected. “Then identify the things you love about your kids and share those with them.” As just one example, we might convey that we love the sound of their voice and how gentle they are with the baby. “Appreciating our children as they are is one way to keep our hearts open,” says Stiffelman.

Focus on the Good

When Barbara Unell, a parent educator and author of Discipline With Love and Limits: Calm, Practical Solutions to the 43 Most Common Childhood Behavior Problems, birthed twins, she was initially daunted by the work of caring for them.

Simply Raising Children Resources A Fine Parent, blog, Sumitha Bhandarkar, AFineParent.com/blog Edit Your Life, podcast, Asha Dornfest, EditYourLifeShow.com The book Parent Hacks:134 Genius Shortcuts for Life with Kids, by Asha Dornfest

Then she began simplifying by focusing on the “wow” factors. “Being a parent speaks to the core of our humanity. Experiencing the growth and development of a human being is miraculous. I started looking at parenting through that lens,” says Unell, who lives in the Leawood, Kansas, area. Asha Dornfest, of Portland, Oregon, a podcaster, co-author of Minimalist Parenting: Enjoy Modern Family Life More by Doing Less and mother of two, relates, “I paid more attention to my values and my family’s unique needs and was less influenced by parenting experts, social pressures and well-meaning peers.” Dornfest explored her own values by asking, “What did I learn from my parents?” and, “How do I want my family to be different?” She also practiced trusting her intuition. “Even when I’m not certain I’m right, I know I love my children, I’m doing my best, and I’ll make adjustments if necessary,” she says.

Create Rhythm and Rituals

Rhythmic activities ease the anxiety of family transitions and furnish warm solidarity, consistency and connectedness. “Increasing the predictability of meals, bedtime and other rituals also improves family life,” says Davina Muse, a mental health counselor and mother of two from Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Muse serves as training director for Simplicity Parenting, a program based on Kim John Payne’s book Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids that offers a connective ritual families can merge with mealtimes. Each person describes a “rose” (one good thing from the day) or a “thorn” (one challenging thing) and a “bud” (one thing they’re anticipating). Such sharing builds a family connection and helps kids discuss difficult issues, notes Muse. Also, “Describing the bud lifts everyone’s mood.”

Every Friday evening, the Dornfests share a Sabbath dinner, a low-key way for them to gather and talk. “This ritual adds a rhythm to our week and anchors us,” says Dornfest.

Elect De-Stress Over Distress

Everyone can sometimes become overscheduled and overwhelmed; a balance between scheduled time and downtime is necessary to well-being. In her daily check-in, Dornfest confers with herself and her husband, inquiring, “How are things going? Are they too hectic? Is our schedule energizing or draining?” She advises, “When I feel like I’m riding a runaway train, I slow down. There seem to be so many ‘shoulds’ in parenting; we instead need to discover what our family loves.” Before enlisting a child for an activity, Dornfest suggests we ask why it’s important: Are you making up for your own missed opportunities as a child? Are you worried your child will miss out? Do you equate these lessons with being a good and caring parent? Parenting is more than checking off lists and tasks. It’s about being connected with children. Build in playtime, roughhousing, chase each other around the yard, toss balloons or balls together, blow bubbles and welcome opportunities for laughter.

Soothing Quiet Time

Children that act out or withdraw may not have enough downtime. Take the kids outside to play. “Nature is very soothing,” says Muse. “Climbing trees, searching for rocks and pine cones, playing with dirt, sticks, water and leaves all offer healing down time.” To escape from worries and distractions, Stiffelman suggests three or four minutes of meditation or simply designated quiet time. For little ones, lay a stuffed teddy bear on the child’s tummy and have them notice how the animal is moving. A parent and child can also be aware of the sounds they are hearing, plus incorporate a little mindful breathing into the bedtime ritual.

Know the Power of Space

Most parents think their children would go crazy if half their toys and books were removed, but this isn’t true. “My trainers and I have worked with thousands of parents on decluttering, and the results have been powerful,” says Muse. The Simplicity Parenting approach encourages parents to discard broken toys, give away anything no longer being played with and attractively store current playthings. She observes, “As you decrease the quantity of toys and clutter, you increase the child’s attention and capacity for deep play.”

Build Resilience

Simplifying parenting means releasing the notion that children must be happy, wellbehaved and delighted with life and their parents at all times. Unell used the daily multitasking challenges with her twins as exercises in developing resilience and modeling these skills for them. If children spill milk, the parent comments, “No big deal. We all spill things.” When there’s a minor accident, “Let’s just get towels and clean it up.” A resilient attitude is, “Something goes wrong, we fix it.” It’s also about being flexible and coping with disappointment. “To build resilience, parents need to feel comfortable in the presence of an unhappy child,” says Stiffelman. “If parents don’t allow children to be disappointed, kids can become rigid, lack confidence and struggle with unreasonable expectations.” During meltdowns or disappointments, she recommends sitting quietly, listening, and then empathizing and helping put the children’s feelings into words. “This is not the time to lecture or advise,” she says. “Upset children can’t really listen.” Yet, they can be heard—a key way to help them mature. Parents that learn to simplify happily discover that their children feel calmer and more loved, socially and emotionally adept, and resilient. Concepts focused on creating connections, rather than parenting perfection, are easy to weave into everyday life. ften when talking with parents, we hear them exclaim, “If only my children came with a rulebook!” Although a rulebook may not have been provided, fortunately today there is plenty of reliable information available. Raising children in a positive, healthy family today can be rather challenging. As many parents already know, children are quite intuitive, and depending on their age, this determines their level of comprehension, development behaviorally and their ability to express feelings or emotions. Furthermore, many parents rely on the spoken or unspoken rules they learned in their family of origin—rules such as: “Do as I say, not as I do,” “Because I said so, that’s why!” Or: “We don’t talk about such things in this house.” Still others may not discuss the obvious at all. Rather, the child may be excused to their room. Nonetheless, the child still knows something isn’t quite right. Only in a dysfunctional family do rules of this sort exist, especially the “do not talk” rule. Here are a few recommended tips for raising and cultivating a healthy environment for happy, self-confident children. First, allow for and accept children’s perceptions and feelings. Feelings are a natural part of our make-up. Many of us were raised to suppress our true feelings, especially anger or sadness. Allowing

this expression validates the child for their viewpoint. Furthermore, it provides a platform for teaching healthy ways to express these feelings without acting inappropriately in the process. It also prepares them for interaction in healthy relationships. Many times, when children express their feelings, parents tend to have a difficult time knowing what to say or how to respond. Some parents may argue with their children, or even take these expressions personally. It would behoove the parents to acknowledge the feelings and validate the child for feeling them. Then, either through discussion or providing alternatives, assist the child in redirecting the feeling(s) without the parent taking the situation personally. Secondly, children need to learn about respect. They need to learn to respect others’ ideas and opinions—as well as themselves. When they feel respected, they feel more at ease to be okay with themselves, their ideas and their opinions. When children are respected, they are more likely to listen and follow through on direction. Thirdly, there is no such thing as “unconditional love”. Now, hear this out. How can we truly show love without conditions? Conditions can be in the form of boundaries or limits. Boundaries define who we are, what we will and will not allow, and give us the freedom to say “no”. This in no way means our love is conditional; rather, it means that we can separate the child from the behavior, allowing the child the reassurance that we love them, but it is the behavior that we cannot allow.

What is more, boundaries are fundamental for our mental stability. We can establish boundaries and limits in a way that models to children how to set these with others—whether it’s a physical, behavioral, emotional, spiritual or even a financial boundary. They in turn can set them with us, their siblings and friends. Finally, we can (and need to) provide a safe, nurturing and supportive environment in which children can thrive. It’s an environment where children are free to try new things without judgment or shame. It’s an environment where they feel free to express themselves without threats or blame, especially if their ideas or opinions differ from ours. It’s an environment where they feel free to make age-appropriate decisions and accept responsibility for themselves. They should be able to grow from any consequences that may follow, be they positive or negative. In conclusion, children that live in a supportive home will most likely grow up being able to thrive later as an adult. They will feel confident in making choices on their own in school, in relationships and later in a career. More importantly, children growing up in a nurturing, supporting home will feel confident in life in general, as they strive to become themselves in an ever-changing world.

Qigong and Energy System

Q

i (chi) is an energy that can be used to bring the body to a quiet and relaxed state. With practice, the mind soon follows. This energy, a part of the universe, is a life force rather than simple energy. The qigong state is a meditative state where the mind calms, the body relaxes, the energy channels flow within you and the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies heal and improve our well-being. New science is now coming out that the mind, body and spirit are one. We cannot heal just parts and expect to heal the whole. Traditional Chinese Medicine has known this for thousands of years. Bringing in qi and removing blockages brings us back to a wholeness that allows the many healing modalities within these pages to help us heal. There is an energy system within our being that is striving to keep us in optimal health. Blockages slow this healing from taking place. Practicing qigong can help us take back control and be an active role in our health. Remove the blocks with qi and help yourself to heal.

Eating for Good Prostate Health

A

by Zachary Saber

ll men should be concerned about prostate health, regardless of age. Prostate disorders such as prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer generally don’t affect men until they are in their 40s or older. However, taking care of ourselves before that is preventative health care, which means we can reduce these risks. Men tend to believe it’s only women who need to maintain hormone balance. But the threat of prostate cancer generally comes from an imbalance of hormones, and not from one hormone acting alone. Hormones are also reactive to the foods we consume or don’t consume. This means we must pay attention to what we eat, and how much we eat. Whole, natural foods are typically high in fiber, a component linked to two indicators for prostate health: lower levels of testosterone and lower PSA scores. Eat more selenium-rich foods such as wheat germ; tuna, herring and other seafood and shellfish; beef liver; kidney; eggs; sunflower and sesame seeds; cashews; mushrooms; garlic and onions. Omega 3 fats (found in fish) fight inflammation, a process that destroys the body’s natural antioxidants and weakens the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to disease. Selenium reduces risk of prostate cancer. Eat more fruits and vegetables, which are excellent sources of anti-cancer and

anti-inflammatory compounds such as antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, minerals and fiber. These foods can help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Other good ones are tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava and papaya, which contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale also are good choices. Vitamin D, folic acid, turmeric and curcumin are important for the same reasons. Eat healthy fats. People who live in countries where high-fat diets are the norm (like the U.S.) are more likely to develop prostate cancer than people who live in countries where less fat is consumed. Also, men who averaged more than 600mg calcium daily had a 32 percent higher risk of prostate cancer than those who regularly

consumed 150mg or less. Drink green tea. This contains catechins, antioxidants that can slow the cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death. Men who drink green tea can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by as much as 70 percent when compared with men who don’t drink green tea. Water is the Fountain of Youth. For those who don’t enjoy the taste, do something to make it tastier like adding citrus juice, mint, electrolytes… the possibilities are endless, but drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Try to maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese is associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer, lower long-term survival rate and more aggressive forms of the disease. We can’t guarantee we’ll never have physical problems, but we can certainly influence our aging process and minimize health issues by practicing preventative measures now. And remember, ejaculation really helps, so spend more time destressing instead of being so focused on that which makes you stressed. There are obvious rewards. Reverse Diabetes in Just 8 Days by Anna Marie Blessing

M

ost diabetics are using standard American medicine to control diabetes, which gives only temporary relief. Instead, we have to change our lifestyles by eating quality foods, doing exercise and avoiding junk foods. Incorporating this remedy can reduce and alleviate diabetes. It’s important to note that even those without diabetes but struggle with headaches/migraines, chronic fatigue, nausea, blood sugar fluctuations, weight loss resistance, heart palpitations, insomnia or digestive issues, may have what is called “insulin sensitivity”. This condition is tied to the delicate cell membrane and responsible for the harmony of our entire endocrine system health. Therefore, this remedy is beneficial for all health conditions, as it not only reverses diabetes, but also helps lower bad cholesterol, reduces chronic inflammation, increases energy, balances hormones and more. It is always recommended to combine this remedy with a healthcare practitioner who can look at and support the body as a whole. Diabetes is caused when the organ responsible for the production of insulin starts to create lower amounts of insulin 32

Tucson Edition

than what is required by the body. These diseases need to be managed properly in order to live a better and healthy life. There are many ways by which the levels of insulin in the body can be increased and managed, but one recent finding involves the natural healing properties of hibiscus. Scientists from Assam’s Tezpur University and West Bengal’s Visva-Bharati University have unlocked the potential of natural chemicals derived from a particular species of hibiscus that can help generate a better therapeutic agent for diabetes. According to International Diabetes Federation, diabetes affects more than 62 million Indians. Moreover, the World Health Organization claims that it will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030. Dubbed as a silent killer by experts worldwide, diabetes mellitus (Type 2 diabetes), or simply diabetes, is one of the four major non-communicable diseases in India, the other three being cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Researchers found that a phytochemical (plant-derived compound) from the leaves of Sthalpadma or land-lotus (scientifically known as Hibiscus mutabilis and commonly called Confederate rose) restored insulin sensitivity of cells and

NaturalTucson.com

thereby helped in lowering blood sugar levels in diabetic rats. Hibiscus is a flowering plant found across India and is known for its cottony color-changing blossoms and medicinal properties. In Ayurveda, the leaves and flowers of the shrubby Hibiscus mutabilis are used to treat swellings, skin infections, hair loss and hair greying. “We found that ferulic acid (FRL), belonging to the polyphenols, extracted from leaves of the plant, has the potential to be a better therapeutic agent for diabetes,” says Samir Bhattacharya, Emeritus Professor, School of Life Sciences (Zoology Department) at Visva-Bharati in Shanti Niketan. The findings were published in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, which states that FRL helped in the improvement of glucose (sugar) levels in diabetic rats within 15 days when administered orally. Try this home remedy for diabetes: Mix about 12 ounces of purified water with 1 tablespoon of Hibiscus Leaf Powder. Place the bowl aside overnight, and in the morning, drink the water on an empty stomach. Do not eat or drink anything else for two hours. Drink the same mixture again at night, then repeat twice a day for eight days straight. In order for the remedy to work, here are some important tips: Do not miss a single day or dose. Strictly follow it for 10 days continuously to see the best results. If a dose is missed due to any reason, do not use this remedy again for 60 days. Remember, this only works if the schedule is strictly followed. Swedish Death Cleaning

H

by Elaine Gerwin

ave you ever heard of it? No, it is not some heavy metal band from Sweden or something that happened and you missed it on the Vikings TV show. It is a cultural concept embedded in the psyche of the Scandinavian country of Sweden. There it is known as dostadning, which translates to “do” (death) and “standing” (cleaning). It is a concept from a culture that values order, cleanliness and individual responsibility, leading to a person completing their life cycle and not being a burden to their family and descendants. The thrust of this philosophy is to de-clutter your life physically and mentally. EG Helping Hand Services LLC is here to assist you in applying the gentle art of Swedish Death Cleaning to jar you into action. This will help you make your life’s circumstances more efficient and effectively free you from mental and physical constants to live fuller and more rewarding years. So how does this concept work in the everyday American life? Simply put, we assist you in the basic but powerful directive of What Do I Hold Onto. This starting point is where we all must begin. For example, we’ve all kept certain items around the house as a reminder of an experience, but we really don’t need to have the object to trigger a memory. Your mind still holds onto the trip or special day you had that led you to keep a souvenir. Those items are a good starting point in the de-cluttering process. Another simple one is to look in your kitchen and see how many plates and glasses you keep. Chances are, you don’t need them all. You may be saying, “But that souvenir is from a trip with my brother, sister, etc.” That is where another concept in the Swedish

Death Cleaning philosophy arises: Involve Others. The philosophy stresses accountability of one’s life and actions. By involving others, you not only document the items and events but include them in your cleaning plan. You are, in essence, doing it the opposite of the traditional American way of leaving all the items and having the family sort it all out after you are no longer there. The Swedish way incorporates the family unit in a sharing way, which adds value to life’s backstretch and improves mental health of people. We should apply this sharing and documentation process to not only heirlooms and mementos but financial, property and legal documentation. Just a reminder: don’t forget those crazy passwords you have setup to access computer files and accounts. If all this seems too overwhelming or you are not sure where to start, go to the closet. We all have items we no longer wear or that don’t fit. This is an easy first step to get the de-cluttering process going. Elaine Gerwin owns EG Helping Hand Services, LLC, which makes it easy for anyone to start a de-cluttering plan and stick with it. Her services are designed on an individual basis to meet clients’ goals. Connect at 520-471-5077, email EGHelpingHandServices@gmail.com or visit EGHelpingHandServices.com. See ad, page 14.

My first paying job, in high school, was through a city youth painting mural program. I believe it was aimed toward at-risk youth, although not all the participants were at risk. During the application process, I had to present a makeshift portfolio and talk about why I wanted to be involved in the arts. It was incredibly fun to participate in, and as of a few years ago, one of the original murals that we (the group of teens with our adult artist helpers) painted still existed, on a wall south of the TCC near Carillo Elementary and La Pilita Museum.

A Light Bearer in Tucson

n a typically warm-to-roasting day in early July, just as the monsoon gathered its yearly forces to relieve Tucson of the swelter, local artist Racheal Rios gifted me with her time and conversation. Although some people may be born with an inclination towards the visual aspects of life, I am a true believer in the notion of the “creative birthright” within us all. Rios is a shining representative of creative birthright. Born and raised in Tucson, her evolution as an artist began in the nurturing, playful, accepting and Racheal Rios 34

supportive arena of her family home.

Racheal, how did you begin your life’s journey on the visual arts path? When I was 8 or 9 years old, I won a poster contest for the “Love of Reading Week” held at Menlo Park Elementary School. My dad was super excited and really started to identify me as the family artist. I would draw and decorate everything, including my siblings. I would use ball point pens to mimic the images in magazines onto their forearms. My dad is a creative person himself. He is a barber, now retired, and draws incredible holiday and birthday cards.

Were there any particular school experiences post-elementary that supported your involvement and growth as a visual artist?

NaturalTucson.com

After high school I supported myself with a variety of jobs in the food industry. I started working with the fire performance group “Flam Chen” and focused my attention and energy on costume-making and fire performance.

How did you wind your way back to the visual arts after a stint exploring the world of performance art? Through my husband, Albert Chamillard, who is a practicing visual artist and has been a fantastic and inspiring partner. When I became pregnant with our youngest daughter Isabell, I stepped away from performance art and starting spending a lot of nesting time with Cassidy, my oldest daughter. We would spend a ton of time drawing together, and Albert would encourage me to go bigger, go bigger—and the next thing you knew I was back in the saddle making huge charcoal drawings. Albert has pretty consistently been a daily art maker, and that definitely keeps the art energy flowing.

Can you talk a bit about your current imagery? You have work up at the YWCA currently and recently did a pop-up exhibit with Albert here in town. Can you share some insights about the source of your imagery?

We Not Me; Deep Rest; Mama Bird by Racheal Rios My drawings generally focus on desert imagery, including animals and plants, and the environment surrounding them. I am also very heavily influenced by the history of art makers in the Americas, pre-colonial and after colonization. The piece I have in the YWCA group show is a self-portrait that represents the title of the show, “How We See the World”. It is a fierce embodiment of my feelings toward our leader.

In 2016, you won the Buffalo Exchange Emerging Artist Award. How did it feel to be selected for this award, and did receiving it affect your studio practice in any way? It would not scratch the surface of the amount of surprise I felt, to say I was completely dumbfounded by it. It feels like a dream that it happened, and I still grapple with impostor syndrome. It changed my studio practice mostly by affording me a studio to practice in, and the complete luxury of the freedom to mess up with art supplies and grow. You have to make a lot of bad art to make good art.

Many working artists in Tucson work a “day job” in addition to maintaining a committed studio practice. Is this the case for you? My day job is with Perry Luxe, a high-end fabricator of metal furniture and window coverings. I work in the window coverings department and make custom draperies and roman shades.

How do you see the relationship between your day job where you are using your creativity to craft these products and your personal work as a visual artist? Creative sources can be accessed and expressed in so many different ways. “Craft”, at one time, just meant women’s art. I can find a creative outlet in making food, yard work, combing children’s hair or even packing school lunches; in fact, I think anyone who does these things, or other everyday things, is a crafter. From this perspective, I don’t separate my work with fabric, where I craft and sew, from my work on paper, canvas or walls, where I craft images using charcoal and paints.

Do you see your work with visual arts as a healing practice for you on a personal level? When I am drawing, there is no running away from my abilities or limitations. Creating anything involves struggling and finding solutions. Learning to let go in the studio can feel like a metaphoric practice for letting go in other areas of life.

Most recently, you created a body of work for a pop-up exhibit you and Albert did together within six weeks. That show was followed by a commissioned mural for Desert Island Records, a new record shop

on Broadway. How did it feel to have two back-to-back tight time frames within which to produce finished artwork? There is the expression, “A body in motion stays in motion”, which is very true for me. Once I am into the flow of creative production, that channel seems to stay open and the energy continues to the next project. In a way, working intensely for six weeks to create the pop-up show felt like a warm-up for the mural project that followed.

How do you connect the dots between your personal work as an artist and serving the larger community? I am committed to the idea that everyone deserves to be able to have original artwork in their lives and homes. I try to make artwork that I would be able to afford as a parent that will soon have a child in college—affordable art. Connect with Racheal Rios at Mrs.RachealRios@gmail.com. Carolyn King, M.A. in Arts & Consciousness, is a local practicing artist who has worked with communities as a teachingartist for over 30 years, both in the U.S. and Mexico. Earlier this year, she founded Heart to Hand Studio, where she offers visual arts experiences for Tucson residents and beyond. Connect at CKing72@cox.net. August 2018

DD: Through this process of education and discipline, how long did it take for you to create the Supreme Science Qigong healing forms? JP: “After 5 years traveling and producing seminars for other Qigong masters, I finally created my Level-1 Qigong Healing Form. It was first published in our books 2003 and only a few dozen instructors memorized it, but by the end of 2007 we had certified a thousand people to teach this routine. Our videos were ‘Qi-Animated’ to show energy graphically and it assisted people in becoming sensitive to energy. In 2013, we upgraded our Qigong videos to HD animation and in 2017 we finally released our remastered Level-2 video with Ultra-HD animation. Spirit continues to reveal a better way to share these healing practices.

DD: What was the driving force for you to absorb so much from the most respected masters of Qigong? JP: “As a graduate from University of Florida College of business, I founded Supreme Science Qigong Center to be successful and took my job seriously. Many Qigong teachers I found did not provide the training I was looking for. I did a lot of research and found a Qigong master, Paul Dong, who wrote a book entitled, ‘Empty Force’. I flew him from China to Florida in 2001, because he claimed to have practiced Qigong every day for over 20 years. We ar-

DD: If there was one take away at the end of the Qi Revolution, what would you wish for each person to embody?

ranged a seminar and I gathered a hundred people to hear Paul share his forms, which were light years ahead of any Qigong I learned previously. His presence activated my Qi and I practiced more because of coming in direct contact with him.

DD: Will participants get to experience these Forms at the Qi Revolution Event?

JP: “The most important embodiment I’d like people to walk away with is that we can BREATHE through life’s challenges and allow God’s Healing Qi to bring strength and guidance. Attendees will personally experience a higher energy from the Qigong. For the last 15 years, people write us thanking us for the powerful breathing exercises at crucial life challenge points. Qigong helps people process stress, but most of all it brings us into a higher state of wellbeing. We make our seminar affordable at 3-Days for $149 so that more people can reclaim their Qi. Location: September 8th-10th, 2018 Phoenix Convention Center.

A Quiet Heart At the center of the most turbulent heart there is a place of peace, a place beyond time that cannot be touched by change or loss. No tumult can disturb the quietness, no shadow can dim the light. Here in this stillness is rest and healing. Nothing we suffer, nothing that we fear, can damage its perfection. ~Pam Brown

JP: “All 3-levels of our Qigong program are shared in detail and we amp up the energy teaching Breath Empowerment, NineBreath Method, Tui Na Acupressure, Foot Reflexology and an intensive education in Food-Healing with using specific foods to reverse specific diseases. Qi Revolution is balanced in presentation and practice. After the event most people choose to continue practicing Qigong from home.

DD: In your Qi Strength Training you focus on balance, strength and flexibility. What else is significant in this practice for longevity?

Zach, a rescued cat, welcomes foster pets to Paw Prints in the Sand Animal Rescue, in Newport Beach, California, teaching kittens cleanliness, and good manners to dogs. “We can’t imagine life without him,” says Monica Sederholm, co-founder of the organization. A congenital condition causing irregular bone growth in his shoulder blades, fused bones and a missing kneecap hasn’t stopped him. Muscle pain keeps him from retracting his claws, but daily massages help him relax. Although Zach remains mobile, walking is difficult or sometimes impossible when an animal is missing a limb or paralyzed. Designed for specific disabilities and fitted for size, a wheelchair cart provides freedom most cats and dogs embrace. Rescue volunteers and adoptive parents must keep clutter off the floors, supervise and remove the cart to allow for comfortable naps. One receives an unlimited amount of love and gratitude from saving a special needs pet. ~Kelly Reeves, co-founder, Paw Prints in the Sand Animal Rescue me the relationships you’re sure you don’t want can be the most meaningful.” “Dottie CrazyPants, a rescued Harlequin Great Dane with severe skin and ear infections and a dysfunctional immune system, had no quality of life until I tried holistic treatments,” says Lara Katz, executive director of the North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center, in Mebane. Dottie didn’t gain weight, even though she ate a lot and drank gallons of water a day, resulting in indoor accidents. “A raw food diet resolved many health and housebreaking issues.” Discontinuing regular medications left Dottie miserable and nearly unable to walk. “A massage therapist said her energy centers were blocked,” Katz says. “After an energy medicine treatment, Dottie slept through the night for the first time in months. Her paws looked better short term.” A combination of holistic treatments including cold laser and red-light therapy, Chinese herbs, an anti-yeast protocol and probiotics works best. Katz also uses only eco-friendly cleaning and laundry products. “Certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Dottie’s visits take a bit of management because of the types of cleaning products used in nursing homes. It’s worth it. She’s completely changed my lifestyle regarding how many toxins we’re exposed to daily.”

Emotional Relief Tracy Krulik, a certified canine separation anxiety trainer in northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area, is a graduate of

Jean Donaldson’s Academy for Dog Trainers. “Using videoconferencing, I can watch my client’s dogs at home, see when panic starts and create daily training plans to keep them safely calm.” Feldenkrais practitioner and author of Grow Young with Your Dog: Learn How You and Your Canine Companion Can Feel Better at Any Age! Mary Debono, of Encinitas, California, sees a variety of pets. “I invited an Arabian named Easy to be the demo horse during a class I taught,” she recalls. “Sore all over, he couldn’t lift his feet high enough to step over a pole lying on the ground.” Easy showed dramatic improvement through Feldenkrais, which focuses on improved function, rebooting the body by interrupting the cycle of pain and tension, so that the patient realizes change is possible. Debono also treated a rabbit that didn’t like to be touched. “I used the eraser end of a pencil through an opening in his crate. Non-habitual touch gets the attention of the nervous system; areas of tension are sore, so gentle lifts provide relief.” Without pain, movement is easier and behavior improves.

Lesson Learned Sandy Johnson, former actress and author of The Pet Healer Project and Miracle Dogs: Adventures on Wheels, in Los Angeles, was in recovery from Stage 4 kidney cancer when she adopted Charley, a Brussels Griffon. “Her singlemindedness taught me my greatest lesson about the body’s ability to heal,” she says. Animals show less concern about blindness, a bum knee or even the need for a wheelchair than humans do. People that live with special needs animals are quick to say the benefits far outweigh the cost. When we’re open to the possibilities, such pets offer lessons in living life to the fullest.
