HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET

T

here are so many big ideas and amazing game changers we’re talking about this month! Where to begin… Do you know about Blue Zones? These are cities across the world that focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents. In the past decade, this idea has spread to more and more communities in the U.S. Read more about this healthy perspective on page 27. In similar good news, the options for plant-based eating are growing across the country. In “‘Less Meat’ Goes Mainstream”, on page 28, we learn how millennials’ concern for the environment has helped create the change that 70 percent of the world is now reducing meat consumption or going meatless altogether. It’s about time! Speaking of plants, our Plant Medicine section is Holly Baker, publisher growing beautifully this month. Check out this neat resource for all things medical cannabis, herbs that can change your life, recipes and help for chronic pain relief. It starts on page 30, and we know you’re going to learn a lot. I also love our Eco Tip on going strawless this month. There’s been much talk of limiting the use of plastic straws in the U.S. and abroad, and great strides have been made recently in creating a change for the future. Whole cities, like New York City and Boulder, Colorado, are now calling for the ban of single-use plastic straws. While there is still a way to go as far as reducing single-use waste in the world, this idea seems to be sticking. Do your part to keep the planet cleaner by asking local businesses to go strawless, or to find other alternatives for cutting down on trash. Bring your own cup or container next time you get takeout—that’s one less bit of trash that could end up in our beautiful oceans.

Go Eco-Friendly with Lotus Interior Designs

M

ichelle Gust, owner of Lotus Interior Designs, in Tucson, loves all aspects of interior design, from the construction of the building to the finishing touches. The Lotus team is skillful at advising or handling the details of all sizes and types of home renovation projects in eco-friendly ways, and can be brought in to facilitate small and large projects and everything in between. The Lotus team enjoys kitchen and bathroom remodels in addition to other parts of the house, choosing eco-friendly floors and repurposing furniture pieces and family heirlooms. Kitchens and bathrooms are used daily and must have function and style. These two rooms tend to be challenging to design for the average home owner, and extra guidance through the process is often helpful. Cabinets can be repurposed with a variety of materials. Renewable resource countertops can be utilized such as paper stone made from recycled paper and cashew resin. Lighting can be repurposed. A countertop can be chosen that doesn’t contribute to depleting our natural resources. Appropriate guidance is crucial as mistakes can be costly. There is a certain sequence that has to be followed to ensure the best results. During the renovation process, there’s an overwhelming amount of information and choices for home owners to wade through. The Lotus Team can help with the decision making process so that renovators find the right product for their needs. For more information, call 520-331-6253 or email LotusInteriorDesigns@live.com. Michelle Cardenas Heals with Reiki at Bright Way Wellness

N

atural Healing Facilitator Michelle Cardenas uses a variety of modalities to assist clients on their journey to better health at Bright Way Wellness. Her philosophy is that healing and wellness occurs through the engagement of positive universal energy using the power of nature. Reiki is the foundation of her work, which brings effective results in healing body, mind and spirit. Michelle Cardenas Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing modality that calls upon the universal energy that is all around us and is sent into the client with a light touch of the hand. It is so effective that touch is not always used to transfer this beautiful divine energy. Reiki energy can be transmitted through time, space and dimension; making it a perfect modality to those that cannot tolerate touch or to reach parts of the body that are inaccessible. Reiki energy brings on pronounced stress relief and relaxation. Often a recipient will go into deep meditation or fall asleep during a session. In this state of calmness, the mind can quiet and heal the mental/emotional self. As the mind drops into deep relaxation, the body follows, and the physical self begins to restore itself. Many clients have reported a release and unblocking of a spiritual nature causing a profound feeling of peace. Cardenas roots her work in reiki because of the many levels of healing that this energy can affect. Through free consultation, clients receive her undivided attention in creating a custom session. Each client is unique, so each session is unique. Location: 2030 E. Broadway Blvd., Ste. 3, Tucson. For information, call 520-549-4800, email BrightWayWellness@outlook.com or visit BrightWayWellness.com.

Raising Consciousness with Spiritual Energy Transformation

J

ohanna W. Alley, owner of Spiritual Energy Transformation, works by appointment to assist clients in raising consciousness with the help of tuning forks. By adding these four different tuning fork sets—pineal gland, two-fork set of 8hz and 13hz for tuning DNA, 528hz and four forks to tune to Lemurian frequency— personal sessions are being taken to a new level of effectiveness. In addition, energy work, Matrix Energetics, past/parallel/future life investigation, high frequency crystals, energy releasing breath work, eDNA work and more are assisting clients to see much quicker and more profound insights and healing experiences. “The earth and her people are going through difficult times as Gaia and the Higher Light Workers take us through these recent and current years of working to raise our consciousness to the next level,” explains Alley. “Many are confused and suffering as this change is happening and are seeking help to understand what part they play and how to raise Johanna W. Alley their own vibration so this change is faster and easier on all.” The DNA tuning forks were used on participants in a group meditation and all experienced deeper altered states and higher connections to each other and other benevolent energies in the room. These tools may also assist many others in having deeper experiences during a session to receive relevant insights and information from Guides, Angels and other loving energies that join the session, on what needs to be done to move forward in life with more peace, confidence and love. Zero Balancing

Z

ero Balancing offers individuals an opportunity to integrate their wholebody connection to a deeper level of being. It addresses deep stuck energy that is held within our bones, going past the soft tissue and into the actual skeletal system of dense held energy and structural imbalance patterns that have been blocking us from living life to its fullest and embracing more joy in everyday experiences. This modality can help clients feel more integrated, decrease their physical and emotional pain and release stress and tensions that are holding them back. A Zero Balancing session can help to reduce headaches, depression, insomnia and physical pain, and help restore an inner sense of calmness and overall well-being. Zero Balancing is a non-diagnostic, hands-on bodywork that integrates the physical structure and the energy connection. This technique is done by a series of gentle skilled touch on various points of the bone and skeletal structure of the body. The points include foundation areas of the spine, hips, neck and feet for alignment of the bones and the joints to release and improve movement. The session is completed through clothing while a client is lying in supine position. Sessions usually take an average of 60 minutes. This technique integrates the energetic movement patterns of an individual with their structural body system to assist in organizing and expanding the physical body and consciousness. Zero Balancing combines both Eastern and Western philosophies of energetic imprints and the human anatomy for an expanded sense of self-awareness. Sue Barrett, a Certified Zero Balance Practitioner at Balance in Motion, has over 25 years of experience in alternative healing, assisting both adults and children to align mind, body and spirit for a whole body connection. Zero balancing can provide that opportunity for integration into Oneness. She offers both office and home visits. Connect at 520-240-2583 or BalanceInMotion@comcast.net.

health briefs

Thirty-seven healthy, non-obese adults between 21 and 50 years old put on a calorie restriction diet for two years showed reduced systemic oxidative stress, indicating greater protection against age-related neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as cancer and diabetes. Participants in this research, conducted by Pennington Biomedical Research, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, cut their calories by 15 percent and lost an average of 20 pounds without experiencing anemia, excessive bone loss or menstrual disorders. Their metabolism also slowed, indicating that they burned energy more efficiently, a factor that may be linked to longevity.

Last Straw

Groups Work to Make U.S. Go Strawless

About 500 million plastic straws are discarded daily in America, reports the U.S. National Park Service. Plastic that reaches waterways is ingested by marine life and our food chain. Individuals and municipalities are taking action to support options, including going strawless. ■ The Last Plastic Straw (TheLastPlasticStraw.org), a project of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, has a worldwide map locator that pinpoints restaurants that have ceased using plastic straws. ■ Milo Cress, who launched the Be Straw Free (BeStrawFree.org) campaign in 2011 when he was 9, is again speaking to school students this fall, primarily via Skype. “It’s exciting to inspire them to know that they can do something in their community,” says the senior high school student in Shelburne, Vermont. ■ Strawfree.org, a Southern California volunteer-driven organization, offers kits that include bamboo

to use them. In July, Starbucks announced plans to eliminate straw use globally by 2020.

■ McDonald’s has announced it will transition from plastic to paper straws in its U.S., UK and Ireland restaurants beginning this year, and subsequently expand the switch to other countries.

■ StrawlessOcean.org offers straw alternatives made of paper by Aardvark, steel and silicone by Klean Kanteen, metal by Steelys Drinkware and bamboo by StrawFree.

■ In May, New York City lawmakers introduced a bill banning plastic straws in all bars and restaurants in the Big Apple, and Seattle has banned the use of single-use plastic straws, thanks to the Strawless in Seattle movement. Sun Spots, Age Spots and Skin Protection

H

by Suzanne Pear

yperpigmentation, by any name, is usually the result of cumulative sun exposure with repeated melanin or skin pigment stimulation and deposition into the cells of the skin’s top section or epidermis. The epidermis actually has five sections and many layers in those sections. There are two main cell types in the epidermis: keratinocytes and melanocytes, in a ratio of about 20 to 1. We make new layers of keratinocytes every four weeks or so and these layers slowly travel up and become the top oldest layer that sheds or flakes off over time. Located beneath the epidermis is the much thicker dermis, which produces collagen and elastin, supporting or holding up the epidermis. The primary function of the epidermis is to protect the body from the outside environment, including heat, cold, dehydration, germs and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Melanocytes inject our genetic skin color into the new layers of keratinocytes and then add more pigment into these cells when injury is sensed, such as from UV rays, a scratch, acne pimple or excess hormones. Unlike keratinocytes, we do not make new melanocytes, and so over time these cells may get worn out. The lighter our skin color, the less resilient our melanocytes may be, since our ancestors probably did not come from areas of the globe with high UV exposure. As these pigment cells age, it appears that the amount of melanin injected increases, resulting in concentrated areas of hyperpigmentation. One thing to be mindful of is that if the melanocytes continue to get over-stimulated, they may die, leaving white spots or areas where there is no skin color—hypopigmentation. It is not possible to reverse this process, so prevention is essential. It is critical to use sunscreen daily—with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) 30—on all exposed skin areas and protective UV-rated clothing if planning more than a five-minute walk or drive in the sun. Car side windows, unlike windshields, are usually not polarized, so significant UV exposure may occur during your daily commute. An annual skin check with a dermatologist is also recommended, since the most common areas for melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer to develop, are on the back and backs of calves, places which are hard to self-monitor for skin changes. Dr. Suzanne Pear, RN, Ph.D., LE, COE, is the owner of Pampered Skin Studio, practicing advanced aesthetics and energy healing. She offers effective skin-protection and lightening products as well as facial and body treatments, including microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and peels for all skin types and sensitivities. Can Food Sensitivities and Food Intolerances Kill You?

A

by Anna Blessing

llergies, sensitivities and intolerances are all different, but they’re also very similar. They are caused by an immune reaction, but the difference is in the timing. Allergy is immediate and intolerance is delayed, making it harder to pinpoint the offending food. Allergic reactions release histamine, which is why they show up on skin-prick tests, while intolerances don’t. But the cause is similar: a food protein (allergy) or a food chemical (intolerance)— and so are the symptoms: a rash, stomach complaints, breathing difficulties, etc. Because an allergy can be life-threatening, it cannot be ignored. Intolerance, on the other hand, may lead to lifelong illness, so maybe it’s about time we paid it some more attention. Intolerances and sensitivities are different, but are still an immune response. Our bodies see these invaders, such as food chemicals, as they would a virus or bacteria that’s inside a cell, they attach to the cell and either engulf it or destroy it. It’s an abnormal physiological response to food chemicals, and can be caused by naturallyoccurring compounds such as minerals, salicylates, vitamins, amines, glutamates, amino acids, gluten and milk protein, to name a few. Reactions are much slower than for allergies, usually taking 12 hours or sometimes days to show up, and the reaction can depend on how much is eaten as well as what is eaten with it. This is why food intolerances can cause chronic health complaints, such as constant fatigue, brain fog, respiratory infections, diarrhea, bloating, digestive pain, chronic pain, constant inflammation and migraines—because we don’t know what the cause is and keep eating it. This chronic inflammatory state is not a happy place to be. Not only is it uncomfortable and debilitating, but it can lead to 20

more serious complaints down the track, like fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, cancer and more. Here are some of the chemical released by the immune system when we are suffering from sensitivities or intolerances and the kinds of symptoms they can cause us to have. Prostaglandins can cause pain, shortness of breath, fast heart rate/heart palpitations, flushing, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Histamines can bring on headaches, itching, burning sensations, crampy abdominal pain and general sense of anxiety with “odd” body sensations. Cytokines may produce fever, sense of impending doom, memory loss, brain fog, headaches, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, sleepiness, fatigue, depression and anxiety. If these chemicals cause us to feel bad, why does our body release them in the first place? These chemicals play an important role in the body’s defense because they notify other immune cells that a potential “threat” has been found, like a virus, bacteria or parasite. Without these chemicals we would probably die from a simple infection. Our immune system will make what’s called an “antibody” to the food (or nutrient) intolerance/sensitivity. The antibody latches onto the allergic food like the space shuttle latches onto the space station. When that happens, science calls it a circulating immune complex (CIC). As soon as a CIC is formed, it sets off another round of internal (and sometimes delayed) allergic reactions, which causes more symptoms. If the body doesn’t get rid of it, the CIC will leave the bloodstream and settle somewhere in the body. CICs settle in our muscles, brain, gut, joints, tissues and organs. Once there, they set off constant and more rounds of allergic reactions, causing even more symptoms over the months and years. These sensitive foods and immune complexes can go anywhere our blood goes—that’s everywhere. So a food reaction can cause a symptom or problem anywhere in our body and brain. Imagine, if the foods or CICs went to our bladder, we might have to go to the bathroom every hour all night long. (But of course, the MD can’t find anything wrong with our bladder or kidneys.) If they went to our arms and hands, we might have swelling, tingling or pain there. If they went to our endocrine and reproductive system, we may suffer from endometriosis, cysts/fibroids, chronic bleeding and pain. If they end up in the brain, we might have anxiety, become depressed or have “brain fog”. So, what can we do? There are only two ways to address food sensitivities/intolerances: avoidance and treatment. Avoidance becomes an exhausting game of cat-and-mouse, and is nearly impossible when we are reactive to nutrients which are in everything, such as minerals, vitamins or amino acids. Treatment is a better option. Biofeedback testing is a permanent and effective treatment to eliminate sensitivities for good. It is non-invasive, quick and painless. If you or your family is suffering from food sensitivities/intolerance, please don’t take them lightly. Mention this article for $200 off the full series of Biofeedback Testing at Tucson Biofeedback. magine lying in a warm, fuzzy nest of pillows that rotates up and down while gazing at a light and listening to gentle music. You begin to feel at ease for the first time in a long time. Now, imagine that this process is helping you organize your brain, so you can think more clearly, learn more easily and feel more connected to the world around you. Welcome to the Sensory Learning Program at Arizona Vision Therapy Center. This revolutionary program was originally created to help children with autism learn how to integrate their senses, so they could function in busy environments. However, it was soon discovered that even more people could benefit from the effects of the treatment. The noninvasive program has benefited individuals with autism and other developmental delays, attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), anxiety and symptoms caused by brain injury. This program simultaneously integrates the senses to include hearing, vision, balance and awareness of body. Through the use of passive light, sound and movement therapy that takes place on a therapeutic bed, the program helps children integrate the sensory messages they receive through sight, sound and their body. The intervention lasts for 30 consecutive days and typically is only performed once due to its long-lasting and long-reaching effects. The program is split into 12 days in-office and 18 days at home. “If one of the senses is either over- or under-responsive to stimulation, it can create an imbalance in the entire brain. This makes it hard for a person to feel com-

Sensory Learning Program Helps Autism, ADD and Sensory Disorders fortable in most environments that have noisy, bright or overwhelming stimuli. These people tend to want to avoid or suppress these stimuli, which can lead to problems with social interactions,” says Dr. Amy Thomas. “When the senses start to synchronize, the world starts to make more sense and becomes less overwhelming.” The visual feature of the program is intended to stir reactions in the brain. For the first two days, the person lies on the table and looks up into the light as it projects the color magenta. Magenta is known as a soothing color that helps calm the brain and help the person “take stock” of their brain and body. The program progresses through the color spectrum. Each color brings about a reaction from the brain. For instance, red helps to improve energy levels. Green helps the body learn how to detox more efficiently. Aqua helps calm down inflammation. Finally, violet helps people work through emotions and helps stimulate

verbal expression areas in the brain. The auditory and visual systems stimulate the brain at a very fundamental level, especially in the hypothalamus. This means that it can change the reflexive aspects of the body, such as temperature and heart rate. The vestibular system works with the cerebellum for smooth movement. “If your vestibular system isn’t working well, you’ll have a lot of balance issues and problems understanding spatial concepts like math,” explains Thomas. Once a disordered visual or vestibular system has been restored, handwriting may improve. Furthermore, pairing the auditory system with the vestibular system helps a person maintain rhythm and locate the direction of a sound. It also helps with the sequencing of movements that are necessary to make sounds into speech. After 12 days of sessions, patients go home with a portable light instrument to continue the program, with a 20-minute session each morning and evening in a darkened room for the next 18 days. This helps solidify the emotional and physical advances learned in the in-office program. Benefits include improved perception, learning abilities, processing time, sleep patterns, awareness and attention, speech, memory and social skills. Arizona Vision Therapy Center is located at 6602 E. Carondelet Dr., Tucson. My mom is an art-maker, and so was my grandmother. My father is a musician. I grew up being surrounded by art materials, images and the creative process. My mother studied art in college, and as a kid, looking through her college portfolio was one of my favorite things to do together. She still works as a graphic designer but devotes more and more of her attention to her pastel work these days.

heard clearly through both her works on canvas and on the walls she paints as a muralist. Raised in Germany within a military base community, her work is distinctively her own. Much of her imagery is filled with lyrical portraits of women, often local, as well as rich color, bold pattern and contrast, both visual and conceptual.

What brought you to the visual arts path?

I have always been very creative. As a kid, I would use anything I could get my hands on to make things. I used household objects like Q-Tips, cotton balls, empty egg cartons, you name it. Growing up in a military community as the much younger sibling meant I spent most of my childhood as an “only child”. I was pretty introverted as a kid, and though I had a handful of close friends, I loved spending time with myself and was constantly engaging my imagination.

NaturalTucson.com

So, you moved to Tucson from Germany while in middle school. Where did you attend high school, and was your creative side supported in that environment? Initially, I attended Tucson High, but I bounced around a bit in high school. I

n the art schools of Europe, both many years ago as well as recently, aspiring artists were trained in the fundamentals of visual arts by studiously copying the works of the masters. This meant realistic renderings of plaster casts were drawn in pencil and charcoal in order to learn the observational skills needed to accurately portray volume through light and shadow. Although this approach does guide student artists through the basic skill set required to produce artwork as “facsimile”, clearly, the missing ingredient in such training was supporting the artist’s distinctive, personal voice. Jessica Gonzales is a local artist whose vision and personal voice can be seen and

We lived in a small town in Germany near the border with the Netherlands. The main thing I kept from those years was a sense of freedom one gets from growing up in a small town. My friends and I could explore nature and absorb culture outside of the bounds of fear, because we felt safe in our town. It’s an experience I feel very fortunate to have had. When I think back on my childhood in Germany, it feels like a dream or a fairy tale. It’s not a place I can easily access and revisit with all my senses, so I’m left to rely on memory. Tapping into this sense of magic is something I hold very near and dear to me as a creative person.

attended Santa Rita High School and a charter school called Academy of Tucson before returning to Tucson High, where I graduated. I had amazing teachers there that last year in both theater and visual arts. These instructors really gave me my first sense of how to explore the creative process from different perspectives, using new approaches and techniques. I grew a lot creatively during my senior year and am still grateful to this day for that guidance.

How did your art education unfold after high school? I enrolled at the University of Arizona right after high school, but in reality, it wasn’t quite the right time for me yet. I think I needed the opportunity to regroup after those challenging high school years, and to clear my head of guidelines and rules so I could better understand what my heart really wanted me to do. I ended up pursuing my Associate of Arts degree through Pima Community College, where I worked with some wonderful instructors. I eventually returned to the U. of A. and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2012.

Can you talk about your time at the U. of A. as an art major? Did this format work for you the second time around?

What evolved in your art life post-BFA?

I started to do commission portrait work while I was still in the program. This continued after graduation. I worked a day job on 4th Avenue for many years while attending school and afterward, where I was exposed to other kinds of creative work, including graphic design for advertising, web design, display work and merchandising. Social media played a positive role in helping me to get my work seen, and I’ve always received wonderful support from members of the creative community. Around that time I started to do lots of live painting at various music and charity events around town.

How does that work?

Live painting at events is really a type of performance. Usually for music events, I set up an easel somewhere near where the band or DJ plays. I might choose who or what I’ll paint determined by the type of music being played, or I might just respond to what’s going on in the moment. For me there’s always been a symbiosis between artmaking and music, and in a public setting the relationship is amplified. It’s important for me to feel like I’m offering a visual experience for an audience that is impactful, so it forces me to get out of my head and absorb my surroundings. These are volunteer opportunities usually, but often, someone watching in the audience will approach me and buy the painting when it’s completed

at the end of the event. It’s been a great way to meet new people and practice having a dialogue about what I do.

Has there been any relationship between painting on canvas to music in public and your evolving work as a public artist who paints murals?

Definitely. I am generally an introverted kind of person, so painting in front of people was really a stretch in the beginning. When I paint at music venues, I interact with people who like to talk with me about what I’m doing. The same thing happens when I work on a mural. It’s so different to be hearing people’s input and comments as I paint than when I am alone in my studio. There’s a vulnerability to exposing your creative process to the world, as it’s happening. It can be uncomfortable, but I’ve learned that the majority of people are genuinely curious and fascinated by the process. It’s very humbling.

Can you talk about your participation in the 2016 City of Tucson Mural Program?

It was a huge learning experience to be chosen as one of eight mural projects for the Downtown area. My piece was titled “Let the Light In” and was located on the west facing outer wall of the Wig-o-rama store at Congress and Scott. In my proposal, I specifically wanted to reflect on my experience of living, working and coming of age as a creative person in the context of Tucson’s downtown community. This mural was my way of “giving back” for all that I have learned and become over the years. My piece included three women’s faces that were representative of birth, nurturing and

I learned a lot about technique at the U. of A. I benefited from having allotted chunks of time to focus solely on creating. At this point I was focusing more on art as a career, so the structure allowed me to see how important it is to dedicate time and effort toward growth and quality work. I didn’t feel especially aligned with several of the professors at the time. The style of guidance I was

receiving wasn’t always effective for me. I did, however, have the fortune and pleasure of working with Alfred Quiroz and Carrie Seid, both of whom offered amazing insight, and employed a language and approach to art making that really spoke to me.

growth. My own personal work on canvas can sometimes be a bit darker in content, but I really wanted to communicate a sense of hope and joy for this mural. It was important to me to provide an uplifting contribution to the community.

It’s somewhat ironic, if not tragic, that your mural, filled with such a positive message, is no longer visible. Can you share what happened? Essentially, the building was sold and the new owner chose to reveal the original brick of the building. My mural was chipped off the facade surface. Without going into great length here, I’ll say that although I was shocked and disappointed, I also learned a lot, grew from the loss experience and have been able to move on. I get it that as a public artist, sometimes these things happen. I have never benefited from holding on to negative energy for too long, so I made the choice to not let it bog me down and to keep moving forward. I am

grateful for the opportunity I was given to create “Let the Light In” and for the way my mural career is unfolding.

What are you working on currently? I am one of several Tucson artists who are creating murals for a new venture called Hotel McCoy. Formerly the Silverbell Inn, it is located just west of I-10 near downtown and was built in the 1960s. The property was purchased by an investor who is renovating it with the inclusion of lots and lots of artwork both on outer walls and on canvases in rooms and the lobby. I have painted one large wall mural so far and am just about to start a series of twelve 5’x5’ panels that are located between rooms along an outdoor corridor.

Clearly, you are doing your heart’s passion through this work. How would you say painting serves as a form of healing for you personally? When I was young, I had a hard time fit-

ting in. I wasn’t outgoing or confident, so art was a way for me to connect with my peers. Making art is the way I extract my thoughts, feelings and ideas into a physical realm. Making images facilitates me to bring my inner dialogue outside my own head to be able to share with others. My paintings serve a conduit or bridge in this way. It helps me feel human. No matter what stage of my life I’m in, I can always rely on creativity to help me feel grounded.

Last question: How do you feel your work serves as a healing tool for community?

I find that my imagery invites a more fulfilling level of conversation and dialogue with people who take the time to view it. Regular day-to-day interactions can often be superficial and don’t always allow people to dig a little deeper together. I prefer heartfelt conversation but often don’t know how to initiate it. Because my work comes from a place of reflection within me, I find that the pieces facilitate interactions with others that are meaningful and explore beneath the surface. Many communities have embraced the principles of this “make healthy living easier” paradigm, resulting in the improved well-being of residents. “Add more years to your life and more life to your years,” says Nick Buettner, vice president at Blue Zones LLC, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the founder’s brother who spoke with us. “The people around you, the places where you work, live and play, and the social norms in your community have an impact on your health.” The original U.S. pilot project in 2009, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, is a prime example. Instead of widening a main thoroughfare and raising the speed limit, the city widened the sidewalk and created a path around nearby Fountain Lake, offering safe exercise for bikers, joggers and walkers. The Hy-Vee grocery increased its health market section from two to seven aisles, leading to a 130 percent rise in related sales, and added a Blue Zones checkout lane for healthy grab-and-go options. City workplaces now offer quiet rooms and fruit instead of candy; one business converted a garage to a pickleball court.

Blue Zone Basics

Move Naturally – Even at work, get up and move at least once every 20 minutes. Reduce Stress – Take a nap, nature walk

or meditate.

Act Intentionally – “People that feel

they have a reason to get out of bed in the morning tend to live seven years longer than those who just go through the motions,” says Buettner. A strong sense of purpose defines quality of life.

Eat Healthy – Enjoy the benefits of a plant-based diet. One cup of beans a day adds three to four years in life expectancy. Plant a garden to grow fresher, pesticidefree food. Eat meat an average of five times a month and in small-portioned stir-fry, soups and pasta. Consume fewer calories. Drink wine in moderation. Check out BlueZones.com/recipes. Maintain Relationships – “If you have

fewer than three friends, it’s the equivalent of smoking for 20 years,” Buettner maintains. “Growing old in place and staying at home instead of a retirement or nursing home is easier to accomplish when you have a social network.” Meet regularly with friends.

Have Faith – A faith-based life taps into a larger resource far greater than oneself and enhances a sense of purpose, social network and calm content.

“Over the last four years in Florida, our sponsor, NCH Healthcare System, has helped to build well-being infrastructure and sustainability for approximately 400,000 people; that swells to nearly 1.2 million during high season from January to April,” says Deb Logan, executive director of Blue Zones Project-SWFL (Southwest Florida). “We have 33 Blue Zoneapproved restaurants that collectively make an additional 176 plant-based menu items available locally; the first half of this year, they sold 130,000 Blue Zones-inspired dishes.”

The five original Blue Zones are Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; and Sardinia, Italy. The healthful community philosophy was vital in Hawaii, when the Kīlauea Volcano spewed lava, sulfur dioxide and acid rain. First-responders staffed checkpoint stations around the clock to protect the public from dangerous areas, exposing themselves to combined sun and volcanic heat. The Hawaiian Blue Zone team delivered smoothies, beverages and paletas—healthy popsicles made with real fruit—to help workers stay cooler. They also delivered them to volunteers and public service groups, including Hope Services Hawaii, which built tiny houses for families displaced by volcanic activity. “We don’t come into an area and say, ‘This is what you must do.’ We say, ‘This is what you can do.’ The readiness must come from the city level, businesses, schools and nonprofits,” Buettner says. “The right leadership must be committed and prepared to follow through on multiple years of initiatives.” He remarks, “In the end, my hope for the future lies in the fact that communities care about their health. Blue Zones isn’t about the quantity of years, but the quality of life, and often that adds years, too.” Connect with the freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com. October 2018

‘Less Meat’ Goes Mainstream

Options Grow for Plant-Based Eating by Marlaina Donato

P

lant-based lifestyles, once considered by some as a fad that would fade, are on the rise worldwide. According to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, 6 million to 8 million Americans have completely eliminated meat, including seafood, from their plates. With a 600 percent increase of people going vegan domestically in the past three years and companies like Nestlé devising vegan-tailored product launches, plant-based eating is creating unprecedented demand. “I’ve definitely seen plant-based eating become more mainstream. Many restaurants now provide plant-based options to keep their customers happy, and more food startups are creating nut- and soy-based cheeses, milks and yogurts,” says Lisa Stollman, a plant-based nutritionist in New York City. Vegan lunch options are even making their way into the Los Angeles public school system.

Millennials Lead the Way

GlobalData, a data and analytics company, reports, “Seventy percent of the world population is either reducing meat consumption or leaving meat off the table altogether,” with Millennials at the forefront. “The environment has been the Millennial generation’s primary concern. 28

Health is of less importance than interest in making the Earth a better place to live,” says Gene Stone, a plant-based diet expert in Hudson, New York, and author of the bestselling Forks Over Knives: The PlantBased Way to Health. Stollman concurs, saying, “The majority of my vegan clients are in their 20s and 30s, and their concern for animal treatment relates to sustainability. Sustainability helps to reduce methane emissions from industrial farms.” Wynnie Stein, co-owner of the iconic Moosewood Restaurant, in Ithaca, New York, and co-author of its groundbreaking spinoff vegetarian cookbooks, has witnessed monumental changes since the early 1970s. Younger cooks at Moosewood have also brought passionate innovations to the establishment. “Millennials are incredibly creative, especially with plant-based and gluten-free dishes. They’re committed to animal rights and issues that affect the health of the planet,” observes Stein.

Benefits All Ages

Since the American Medical Association’s recent suggestion that hospitals consider providing plant-based meals for patients, perceptions are shifting. Holistic Cardiologist Joel Kahn, in Ferndale, Michigan, began teaching plant-based diets to heart

patients in 1990, and has subsequently seen hundreds of them avoid invasive and surgical procedures, as well as show less evidence of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension. “Many of my patients have decreased or eliminated the otherwise lifelong ‘jail’ of prescription drugs. They learned that disease reversal, not management, is the goal,” says Kahn. Supermarkets across the country are stocking meatless products like plant-based burgers. Many athletes and bodybuilders that have switched away from eating meat attest to improved results by tapping into plant power. People of all walks of life, including seniors, have embraced this paradigm. “There is increased interest in health as Baby Boomers age and start to realize the benefits of a plant-based diet, much of it due to myriad new research,” says Stone. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, a diet rich in vegetables and fruits lowers blood pressure. The American Diabetes Association supports a nutrientdense vegetarian diet that can decrease the risk of certain diseases. For Stollman’s vegan clients aged 50 and older, “Health plays a strong role in their interest in plant-based eating. The science has become clear, and based on the evidence, I continue to teach my clients the importance of including plant-based meals in their daily diets,” she says.

Looking Forward

The surge of people changing their diet has a multilevel impact. “I feel deeply grateful to have been able to help spread the word about plant-based diets. Health, the environment and animal protection are great concerns of mine,” says Stone. Stein appreciates how the positive change in diet benefiting people and the planet is coming full circle. “We’re still amazed and honored to know that our cookbooks have helped to create a sea change. Folks visiting from all over the world tell us how our recipes have influenced several generations of their families.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, multimedia artist and author of books in the spirituality and alternative health genres. The Ayurvedic Women’s Herb Too Few Know About

I

by Robyn Landis

n Ayurvedic medicine, shatavari is a revered staple herb, especially for female health and libido. Interestingly, almost no woman seems to have heard of it. Adaptogens that have been used by Eastern healing traditions—some for thousands of years—like ashwaghanda, rhodiola, shizandra, eleuthero and medicinal mushrooms have become all the rage in the last few years, darlings of functional medicine. Yet for some reason, shatavari hasn’t gotten as much love as these trendier adaptogens. Let’s change that. Asparagus racemosus, or shatavari, is known as “Queen of the Herbs” for female health and libido. It has been used for millennia as a female tonic and hormone balancer. As an overall reproductive tonic, shatavari can be used at all stages of a woman’s cycle, from the start to the end, supporting fertility and addressing symptoms of PMS as well as sensations and issues associated with perimenopause and menopause. Classified as both bitter and sweet, the powder is made from the thick tuberous roots of the plant, hence its Sanskrit name that translates as “the plant that has one hundred roots below the ground”. Although it gets more attention relative to the female reproductive system, shatavari is actually an aphrodisiac for both men and women, and in Ayurvedic terms, it can help to balance excess pitta or vata systemically in either gender (increases kapha). Shatavari is also a good general stamina builder, digestive tonic and immune rejuvenative as well—male or female. It’s cooling and soothing. Shatavari is really on the food end of the spectrum. It’s from the asparagus family (though tastes more carroty). So, like turmeric or the Chinese immune-boosting adaptogen astragalus, we want to think of “eating” it if possible, rather than just taking a pill. There’s just not enough in a capsule or two for most people to really see benefit. Shatavari can be taken in capsules or tinctures, but can also be delicious added to a smoothie or water. While some herb powders definitely ruin the smoothie vibe, shatavari is quite neutral. The below smoothie especially conceals any taste of herb—and actually seems to complement. Quality organic shatavari powder is available online from trusted brands such as Banyan Botanicals. PLANT MEDICINE

SECTION pages 30-37

In 1937, the U.S. passed the Marijuana Tax Act. The bill outlawed farming, using, possessing and selling any part of the marijuana plant. From that moment on, marijuana had a stigma attached to it; it was illegal and became a shady topic when it came to possession and usage. The reasons for this are as complex as the plant itself and is better discussed at length at another time. Prior to 1937, marijuana was commonly referred to as hemp, and was a popular crop and had a plethora of uses. To name just a few, it was used as twine, rope, canvas, fabrics, linen, paper, stucco, cement, oils fuel, ink, soap, balm, animal feed and hundreds of others. It was a popular and easy crop to grow. Many farmers, and a number of politicians, including some of our own Founding Fathers,

had acres of marijuana on their homesteads as early as before the colonization of our country. In fact, George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate grew hemp prior to its illegalization. Today, Mount Vernon is again planting hemp, and the taboo status of marijuana has dramatically changed. Marijuana, it seems, has come full circle as far as usage and its multiple level benefits. When talking about marijuana in today’s present culture, it’s normally in a positive and exciting manner. For decades, opponents of marijuana legalization have taunted that marijuana is a gateway into harder, scarier drugs. Those protesters were partially correct. Marijuana is a gateway drug between more illicit substances, but in the reverse direction. The gate opens away from those drugs and toward a

path which leads to an alternative to prescription medications. As more and more benefits are discovered about marijuana, and as new strains are developed and grown, Natural Awakenings will keep our readers informed and up to date. We will be conducting our own research and collaborating with scientists, farmers/growers, distributors and patients in order to bring our readers the latest in medicinal marijuana, because education is key. It will be a slow process for many Americans to come to grips with the understanding that marijuana is not the enemy, or some shady back-alley drug that needs to be hidden. With the state of healthcare and medical insurance, it is reassuring to know that on the horizon lies a simple plant that can help in so many ways. It’s time for marijuana to shine as the star that it is—nature’s medicine.

Wormwood Fights Cancer Researchers at the University of Washington have discovered that a compound derived from the sweet wormwood plant (Artemisia annua), an ancient herb used in Chinese medicine and in Asian salad dishes, is more than 1,200 times more specific in killing certain kinds of cancer cells than currently available drugs. The finding heralds the possibility of a more effective chemotherapy drug with minimal side effects.

CANNABIS: Nature’s Game Changer

C

by David Yrigoyen

annabis, or marijuana, has been around for thousands of years and has been used as medicine throughout that time. It is one of the safest plants on the planet, when used correctly, and the adverse effects can be treated with other natural plants and herbs, instead of having to take a bunch of pills. There are even ways to use cannabis with non-psychoactive effects. Not one person has ever died from the overconsumption of cannabis; the same can’t be said for peanuts, caffeine or even water. Cannabis was recognized by the US Pharmacopeia from 1850 to 1942 and was used in a variety of medications, along with being an important part of our history and development. The First President of the U.S. grew fields of cannabis, and cultivation was encouraged by the government during World War II for military supplies. Currently, the U.S. government holds patents for cannabis as medicine, and the FDA has approved synthetic versions of cannabis for medication (ex. Epidiolex, Marinol), which contradicts the Schedule 1 listing that cannabis is currently under. A Schedule 1 narcotic has no medicinal benefits and has a high potential for addiction—that doesn’t fit cannabis at all. Cannabis is made up of a class of diverse chemical compounds called cannabinoids. There are over 100 known cannabinoids, but the most common are Δ9-THC and CBD. Cannabinoids act on receptors in a system that all humans/mammals contain, the endocannabinoid system. This system was discovered in 1992, and has been scientifically showing how cannabis works as medicine. There are endocannabinoid receptors in our central nervous system/brain (CB1) and immune system (CB2), and we keep discovering more as research progresses. The cannabinoids bind to these receptors and try to activate homeostasis throughout the different systems. There are even videos on the internet showing cannabinoids attacking mutated cancer cells and causing apoptosis (cell death). However, that was with

injecting the cannabinoids directly into the affected cells/tumors of lab animals. Researchers are currently waiting for approval to move on to the next phase of testing, but there is enough research out there to show the many medicinal benefits of this plant. There are multiple ways to consume cannabis and the effects differ. Inhalation by smoking or vaporizing is the most common way to consume cannabis, and it is one of the methods that has the quickest effects, which are instantaneous. Some people don’t want to inhale the plant, and that is understandable, but it does have its benefits and there are ways to safely inhale cannabis, like vaporizing, which has a low risk of adverse effects. Inhalation has been shown to bring activity to the CB1 receptors in our CNS and offer relief for a variety of ailments—physical, mental and neurological—but the effects do not last as long as some of the other methods of consumption (1 to 3 hours). Ingesting cannabis in the form of edibles, tinctures, capsules or elixirs has shown to be the method with the longest acting effects (4 to 8 hours). This method can take 30 to 45 minutes to take effect. Also, it can be a lot easier for a person to overconsume when ingesting cannabis, so it is recommended to start with a low dose to see how the body reacts to the plant. Cannabis topicals like lotions, balms and patches offer amazing relief, and this is the only method for localized pain relief. All other methods disperse throughout the body, whereas topicals can be applied directly to the affected area. Topicals are also a great way to use the cannabis in a non-psychoactive form, and the results can last for hours to days. There are also cannabis suppositories. Suppositories have been shown to have no psychoactive effects and is the only method that allows a person to take hundreds of milligrams of Δ9-THC without feeling any psychoactive effects. Some patients can’t eat 10mg of Δ9THC because the effects are too strong, but they can take 700+mg in suppository form. This method of consumption is recommended by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who helped discover the endocannabinoid system and was the first doctor to isolate and identify Δ9-THC and CBD in 1964. He believes that this method allows high intake of the cannabinoids with low risks, and it has been shown to bring relief for different types of ailments—even certain cancers. CBD has been popularized recently and it has amazing medicinal effects for inflammation, anxiety, depression, tremors and more. It is also recommended to incorporate a full spectrum of cannabinoids, which activates an “entourage effect”. This will give optimal relief from all the cannabinoids. The ABCs of CBD by Mike Bond

C

annabis has naturally grown on our planet for thousands of years. Due to unfair regulations by the government, it has been outlawed up until recently. During this prohibition of the plant, many sought it out for the psychedelic effects associated with it. However, in the last two decades, more research has proven it has medicinal properties. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the medicine derived from the plant, which does not contain THC (the chemical that gets you “high”). Research has shown that CBD has a range of beneficial features, such as: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotectant, anxiolytic, antidepressant, analgesic, anti-tumoral agent and anti-psychotic.

The problem for many people who are advocating the use of CBD oil is that there is still a stigma that any cannabisrelated product or chemical is being used to get the person high. However, that is false. CBD, which is non-psychoactive, and THC, the chemical that causes the high, are different in many ways. Accordingly, CBD does not result in getting high. Ailments benefited by CBD include: cancer, diabetes, lupus, motor disorders, nicotine addiction, Parkinson’s disease, chronic and neuropathic pain, OCD, osteoporosis and withdrawal symptoms. One of the most popular uses of CBD is for natural pain relief. Based on what researchers have found thus far, it appears that CBD reduces pain by inhibiting neuronal transmission in pain pathways. In fact, a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine examined the effects of CBD in rodents. It was discovered that CBD significantly reduced chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in the rodent without causing analgesic tolerance. What this means is that CBD, and other non-psychoactive chemicals found in the hemp plant, may create an enormous amount of therapeutic agents that can treat chronic pain. Even though there have been significant breakthroughs in antipsychotic medication over the years, there has been an all-natural treatment in front of us for thousands of years. The latest research shows that another one of CBD’s benefits is that it acts as an antipsychotic aid. The pharmacological profile displayed by CBD is similar in nature to that of many atypical antipsychotic drugs. Also, recent studies have shown that CBD can prevent human experimental psychosis. Again, clinical studies are recent and limited. Mike Bond, a Colorado native with a strong belief that people have a right to the highest quality, fairly priced hemp-derived CBD, founded Tucson’s SOS CBD. Their highquality CBD products are available online throughout the U.S. Connect at 844-4024223, SOSCBDCompany@gmail.com or SOS-CBD.com. See ad, page 32.

SUPERHERBS

Four Plants that Fight Off Disease by Kathleen Barnes

Mother Nature’s most potent healing herbs are already on most spice racks or growing nearby, often right outside the door.

H

erbs, respected for their healing properties for millennia, have been widely used by traditional healers with great success. Now clinical science supports their medicinal qualities. Pharmaceutical companies routinely extract active ingredients from herbs for common medications, including the potent pain reliever codeine, derived from Papaver somniferum; the head-clearing antihistamines ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, from Ephedra sinica; and taxol, the chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat several types of cancer, including breast cancer, from Taxus brevifolia. These are among the findings according to Leslie Taylor, a naturopath and herbalist headquartered in Milam County, Texas, and author of The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs. Even among an abundance of healing herbs, some stand out as nature’s “superherbs” that provide an array of medical properties, according to Rosemary Gladstar, of Barre, Vermont, the renowned author of Herbal Remedies for Vibrant Health and related works. Two of these, she notes, are widely considered nuisance weeds. Plantain (Plantago major): Commonly used externally for poultices, open wounds, blood poisoning and bee stings, it also helps relieve a wider variety of skin irritations. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, this common “weed” fortifies the liver and reduces inflammation, which may reduce the risk for many kinds of chronic diseases. At least one study, published in the journal Planta Medica, suggests that plantain can enhance the immune system to help fight cancer and infectious diseases.

“Plantain is considered a survival herb because of its high nutritional value,” advises Gladstar, who founded the California School of Herbal Studies, in Sonoma County, in 1978. A new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirms it’s an excellent source of alphatocopherol, a natural form of vitamin E and beta carotene that can be used in salads for those that don’t mind its bitter taste. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): Like plantain, dandelion is one of the most powerful medicinal herbs on the planet. “Dandelion is revered wherever you travel, except in the U.S., where it is considered noxious,” observes Gladstar. Americans should reconsider their obsession with eradication. Dandelion root is an effective treatment against several types of cancer, including often-fatal pancreatic and colorectal cancers and melanoma, even those that have proven resistant to chemotherapy and other conventional treatments, according to several studies from the University of Windsor, in England. Traditionally part of a detoxification diet, it’s also used to treat digestive ailments, reduce swelling and inflammation and stop internal and external bleeding. Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Turmeric gives curry powder its vibrant yellow color. “Curcumin, turmeric’s most important active ingredient, is a wealth of health, backed by substantial scientific evidence that upholds its benefits,” says Jan McBarron, a medical and naturopathic doctor in Columbus, Georgia, author of Curcumin:

The 21st Century Cure and co-host of the Duke and the Doctor radio show. Several human and animal studies have shown that curcumin can be an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, both in prevention and to slow or even stop its progress. One Australian study showed that curcumin helps rid the body of heavy metals that may be an underlying cause of the memory-robbing disease. Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that curcumin helped dissolve the plaques and tangles of brain material characteristic to Alzheimer’s. Curcumin is also known to be effective in lessening depression and preventing heart disease, some types of cancer and diabetes, says McBarron. Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Primarily used for its considerable anti-inflammatory properties, ginger makes a delicious and healing tea and an enticing spice in a variety of dishes. This herbal powerhouse has at least 477 active ingredients, according to Beyond Aspirin, by Thomas M. Newmark and Paul Schulick. Considerable research confirms ginger’s effectiveness against a variety of digestive problems, including nausea from both morning sickness and chemotherapy. Research from Florida’s University of Miami also confirms its usefulness in reducing knee pain. “Ginger is a good-tasting herb to treat any type of bacterial, fungal or viral infection,” says Linda Mix, a retired registered nurse in Rogersville, Tennessee, and author of Herbs for Life! The health benefits of these four vital herbs are easily accessed by growing them in a home garden or pot or via extracted supplements. tates across the country are enacting new laws regarding the prescribing of narcotics. Patients throughout Arizona, and the country, are being informed by their physicians that getting their regular monthly prescription for long-term pain relief has changed. There won’t be any more ongoing monthly prescription disbursement, meaning that there won’t be any long-term usage of narcotics moving forward. Certainly there are exceptions to this law, terminal illness being one of them. Arizona’s new regulations took effect in October 2017. In the year since then, countless people have felt lost and confused about where to go and which way to turn for continued treatment for their specific medical condition. Thank goodness that nature is medicine. Although turning to natural medicine may sound easy, the reality of it can be quite overwhelming. Patients must first be certified and obtain their Medical Marijuana Card from the Arizona Department of Health Services. A certification card is needed before going to the dispensary or working with any of the budtenders. There are a number of certify36

ing clinics here in Tucson to help with the process, Tumbleweeds and Natural Healing Care Center to name a couple. Most of the clinics will file all of the applicable paperwork to the state, which is very helpful in keeping the certification process as easy as possible. Once the patient has their card, the budtenders at a dispensary will help guide and inform patients regarding the best process and steps to take in order to obtain the ideal product for their specific needs. One of the first thoughts after becoming certified to use medicinal marijuana is, “Where do I begin?” There are so many different types and strains of marijuana, and knowing which one is best for a specific ailment or set of symptoms can be difficult. The transition from prescription drugs to a more holistic approach, including the possible use of plant medicines is a process. Medical cannabis comes in two basic types: Sativa and Indica. Each type has its own distinct set of characteristics. The efficacy of cannabis is directly related to strain selection, therefore it is recommended that care be taken in selecting

appropriate strains to meet individual needs. Scientists are beginning to identify particular varieties that are effective for sleep, pain, appetite and energy, as well as other specific conditions and symptoms. The medicating effect of Indica is predominantly physical, although the relief of physical symptoms can have positive emotional results as well. Indica blends are characterized as relaxing, sedating and pain-reducing. They are excellent at relieving stress. Indica produces an overall sense of calm and serenity and is very effective for overall body pain relief, allowing the patient to simply be still without the debilitating pain that they’ve been suffering. Indicas are generally best for later in the day and before bed. Simply put, Indica reduces pain, reduces inflammation, relaxes muscle spasms, stimulates appetite, aids sleep, reduces headaches and migraines, reduces intraocular pressure and is used for an anticonvulsant. Sativa is often characterized as cerebral, uplifting and energetic. It provides excellent pain relief and reduces nausea, reduces depression, relieves headaches and migraines, stimulates appetite, energizes and stimulates, increases focus and creativity and supports the immune system. Learning the advantages of using plant medicine can seem daunting, but information and help navigating the process is always available at great dispensaries. The experts are there to help patients become the healthiest person they can become by using research-based natural medicine and employing knowledgeable budtenders as consultants.

elcome to the Cannabis Corner. Each month Natural Awakenings will centerstage a specific strain of marijuana in order to help readers who struggle with finding the best strain for them and their particular symptoms. There are literally thousands of different varieties of marijuana. Certainly, some groundwork will need to be done on the patients’ part, including their own research, asking questions and being their own health advocate. Know that there are trained customer service representatives, referred to as Budtenders, at medicinal marijuana dispensaries willing to assist. Natural Awakenings will interview local growers and budtenders and find out which strains are selling best and for what symptoms they are treating. This month’s focus is on a strain of marijuana that’s fantastic for the beginner: ACDC. This strain was chosen to debut in this first Cannabis Corner because of the high level of CBD, or Cannabidiol, the medicinal agent in marijuana.

ACDC

This strain of marijuana doesn’t have the same effect on the body as the rock band by the same name. In contrast, it’s quite mild and very popular with new patients because of the many medicinal qualities without the euphoric “mind-high”. This is because of the higher levels of CBD and the lower levels of THC. ACDC offers the patient a relaxed state and brings about feelings of happiness. It’s known for the ability to help with focusing and concentration, while maintaining an uplifting and energetic state. Medicinally, ACDC is primarily used for pain and stress relief. It helps the body combat inflammation and can help with depression and headaches. Dry mouth is the biggest side effect. ACDC is available at Earth’s Healing Dispensary, conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., in Tucson. For more information, visit EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 31.

Sunflowers as Medicine? Around the country, people can agree that the sunflower is one of the most beautiful flowers that can be grown. They bring a cheerful backdrop to any garden and can be seen nodding in the wind and following the sun’s passage overhead. Not only is the sunflower plant one of the most recognizable, it also has some medicinal value. The large, beautiful flower can be used to make a tea that will help lower fevers, suppress coughs and support the lungs when suffering from bronchitis. Eating sunflower seeds will also provide a boost in zinc, copper and manganese, which are essential minerals needed to maintain a healthy body.
