GE Computing Refurbish or Recycle Program

G

E Computing is now introducing its “Refurbish or Recycle” program for those who have out-of-date computers that would like them to “Hit a Key to Continue”. Owner Don Gibbens would love to give clients a no-charge consultation to help them decide what to do with their older computers. “Some computers may just need to be ‘relifed’,” says Gibbens. “They may qualify for a trade-in credit, or it may really be time to ‘hit any key to continue’.” Here are the steps in the program: • Relive. Save data, pictures, documents and licenses to be reused. These will be saved to be placed on another computer or on an external hard drive or USB drive. • Reformat. Erase everything so no information is “out there”. The computers end up with cleaned hard drives. • Refurbish. “Relife” the computer for the owner or someone else. Computers newer than 2008 can usually be made “new”—just not quite as fast. • Recycle. Those not “relifed” will go to a nonprofit that helps create training opportunities for people. For more information or to schedule a complementary “Refurbish or Recycle” consultation, call 520-332-1485 or email Don@GEComputerRepair.com. See ad, page 20.

t. Michael’s Episcopal Church holds Taizé services on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. The services are contemplative, held by candlelight, and offer a rich experience of community, music, reflection and joyful singing. Each is unique, with varying Taizé songs, spoken and sung prayers, chants and periods of silence and meditation. Eight musicians contribute on violin, guitar, mandolin, recorder and piano, along with an organ voluntary and a bagpipes recessional. There are also readings by authors from a variety of religious traditions. Taizé is ecumenical and affirming, rooted in the openness and welcoming nature of the Taizé Community in France. For most people their first encounter with Taizé is through its music. Taizé songs have a chant-like quality and consist of short verses that are repeated, creating the meditative quality of prayer. It’s about listening to God, to one another and taking this divine presence into the world. As a compliment to Taizé, St. Michael’s also offers a Contemplative Prayer Group, which meets at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, in the House of Prayer, located on the north campus of the church. In the Contemplative Prayer Group, there is a strong cohesiveness among the members and a growing number of enduring friendships are being formed. New group members in the past year have included longtime St. Michael’s folk as well as numerous individuals from the community. There remains a close link between the ministries of the group and Taize. They are both focused on the truth that a deeper relationship with God leads not only to personal, spiritual and relational growth, but also to right action in carrying Christ’s message to the community and to the world. The group’s format is 25 minutes of silent meditation, listening to a CD/DVD by a noted spiritual author, then discussion which is always lively and spiritually uplifting. Coffee hour follows. St. Michael’s is a place for members to share their vulnerabilities with one another and to learn and grow in the context of that shared community experience. Sunday services include a Family Mass, a traditional High Mass and a Spanish Mass. All are welcome. Location: 602 N. Wilmot Rd., Tucson. Organic Labeling Evolves to Meet Challenges

Organic shoppers may see additional labeling on produce. More than a dozen farmers and scientists from around the country met to create the standards for an additional organic certification pilot program called the Real Organic Project (ROP), which they plan to initially introduce at 20 to 60 farms. Under the current U.S. Department of Agriculture program, the organic label means that produce has been grown without synthetic substances or genetic engineering; it doesn’t specify whether produce was grown in water or soil, which the new labeling would address.

Tiny Houses Can Benefit Seniors

The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is building a small, modular home on its Evansville campus to demonstrate how the tiny housing model could make independent living accessible for people of all ages and abilities. It’s part of a larger effort aimed at creating a cultural transformation related to aging in a community. The home’s small size is a selling point for people unable to maintain a larger dwelling as they age and help them remain independent. Dr. Bill Thomas, a geriatrician and national expert on aging partnering in the project, envisions a pod-like village of such “Minkas” with older people living within a community instead of being sequestered in nursing homes. Immune Boosters

O

ur immune system is a complicated assortment of large intestinal cells called Peyer’s patches to immunoglobulins that remember the flu we had three years ago. It does its best to protect us, beginning at our skin and into and through our intestinal walls. Our bodies and immune systems are being taxed by toxins, pesticides, herbicides, parasites, molds, fungus, bacteria and viruses. It’s quite the miracle that we aren’t all ill in some shape or form from these outside stressors, however our bodies are amazingly adaptable as we have seen over hundreds of years. We are still here and thriving due to our immune system’s adaptations. What can we do to stay healthy and keep our immune system strong? • Eat as clean as possible, avoiding sugar and processed foods, which dampen our immune system’s capacity. Avoid all phony sugars. • Add in some extra vitamin C. Consider eating an orange or grapefruit or putting lemon in water daily. Try a chewable or powder form if needed. • Support liver function by adding in Milk Thistle. Our livers are working hard to convert toxins to harmless materials, so they can be cleared out without damaging the body. When the liver is working optimally, the immune system is supported as well. • Before turning on the heat this winter, make sure that vents, ducts and filters are clean. • Wash bed linens weekly in hot water and dry on hot. Vacuum under the bed, as lots of allergens congregate under beds. • Stay well hydrated. Water is the source of all life—including our cells. • Get enough sleep. Relax by reading or meditating before bed to calm the body and mind. • Emotions challenge our health, causing our immune system to falter. Be forgiving of yourself and others. • Try making bone broth when feeling unwell. Many good recipes are available, including a simple one at Blog.Bulletproof.com/bone-broth-recipe. • Make Voodoo Juice, which is a ramped-up version of the Master Cleanse, found at TFMND.com. • Try a Myers Cocktail—a 30 ml vitamin injection given when one is feeling poorly. It consists of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and vitamin C. The injection can be effective against acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue, fibromyalgia, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergies and more. DeeAnn Grimes Saber, NMD is co-founder of Transformational Medicine, PLLC, which is running a November special for immune boosting. Come in Mondays from 2 to 4 p.m. for Vitamin B shots or a Myers Cocktail. No appointment necessary. Location: 3861 N. First Ave., Tucson. Connect at 520-209-1755, DrDeeAnnND@aol.com or TFMND.com. Evading EMFs

I

t is widely known that electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are wreaking havoc on our health and mental well-being. Luckily, doing just one simple thing can make a huge difference in our sleep, immunity and overall health and well-being. Routers, EMFs, cell frequencies and the like can pass through walls, so it does not matter if it’s in another room. Electromagnetic waves are uninhibited by structures, walls and even most distances. Dr. Magda Havas, Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University in Canada, is a leading researcher in this field. “The scientific evidence clearly shows that microwave radiation at levels well below [international] guidelines…with Wi-Fi routers causes cancer in laboratory animals, causes heart palpitations in sensitive adults, causes reduced sperm motility and viability, and is associated with symptoms of electrosensitivity that include— but are not limited to—cognitive dysfunction, pain, fatigue, mood disorders (depression, anxiety, irritability), dizziness, nausea, weakness, skin problems and tinnitus,” she states. What we can’t see, can actually harm us. So why not experiment by unplugging that router every night for a week and see how different you feel. Observe the deeper sleep experienced, enjoy lucid dreaming and waking up happier, healthier and more energized. To read the full article on the impact EMFs have on our health, visit TucsonBiofeedback.com.

Tractograms for Diagnosing Brain Injury Conditions

T

he science of using brain MRI data to help understand brain injury conditions has continued to progress. Tractograms are a powerful tool to aid in the diagnosis of concussion injury. When a brain MRI study is done, each tiny spot in the brain is saved as a pixel, with a value between 0 and 1 based on the electromagnetic field. Once that data is saved, it can be processed by complex algorithms in order to define “tracts” that are connecting different areas of the brain. When tracts are disrupted or truncated, the coordination of function between different areas of the brain is disrupted. If our thalamic connections are affected, it can affect our sleep-wake cycle. If the frontal lobe connections are affected, it can affect decisionmaking. If our left sub-frontal lobe connections are affected, it can affect our mood. Recurrent “sub-concussions” (without loss of consciousness) may contribute to this pathology, as can exposure to various toxins. Nutrient deficiencies coupled with excessive toxin exposure and accumulation can impair vital healing processes in the brain and nervous system. If we do not heal a brain injury condition, neurodegenerative processes begin. Those who have exposure to these injuries should have a brain MRI–DTI study with tractograms done and get treated. Decrease Fight-or-Flight to Boost the Immune System

T

his is a quick, almost effortless way to improve the immune system by decreasing our time spent in fight-or-flight mode. It has long-lasting results that can be done in under 30 days. Participants experience reduced reactivity to stress and an increased ability to multitask, handle emotional situations, connect the dots and feel in control of themselves. Imagine a caveman, knowing a sabretooth tiger is out there somewhere trying to kill him. Where would his priorities lie? Would he care about purging himself of the toxins from that mammoth he ate earlier? How about taking a nap or dealing with the emotions brought on by his cave mother-inlaw? Would he care about healing himself? None of these would be his priorities, because he would only care about survival. Those functions would have to wait until he could get back to his cave—if he ever gets back to his cave. This is the same reaction that a busy life in modern society is causing, only we have “sabretooth tigers” (daily stressors) coming at us from every direction. Because of this, it is difficult to concentrate on sleeping, digesting, regulating mood, remembering minor details and dealing with emotions. The Sensory Learning Program is designed to help decrease fight-or-flight responses. This is a 12-day program in which clients lie on a cushioned table that rotates up and down while gazing at a light and listening to special music for 30 minutes twice per day. After the 12 days, they perform home support for 20 minutes twice per day. These sessions are intended to help calm the brain and reorganize it into a more cohesive network that can help us navigate through our lives without so much distraction and frustration. The Sensory Learning Program was originally designed for Special Needs kids to help them integrate their senses and organize their brains to allow them to handle multiple stimuli. It has been found to do much more, to include helping brain injury patients, generalized anxiety problems, attention problems and feeling connected. Amy Thomas, OD, FCOVD is Clinical Director at Arizona Vision Therapy Center, which offers the Sensory Learning Program. Connect at 520-8868800, ThomasAmy@live.com or AZVisionTherapy.com. The Aging Neck: Prevention and Treatment

T

he neck is one of the most visible indicators of age and aging. Most people in sunny Tucson know that sunscreen should be worn to prevent ultraviolet radiation-associated sun burn/damage, but most either only apply when prolonged exposure is anticipated (when playing golf or sunbathing) or else apply only to the face. Neglecting to daily protect the vulnerable neck tissues with sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) often results in loss of subcutaneous fat, visual prominence of vertical neck bands, horizontal neck rings, jowling along the jawline and excessive skin coarseness and looseness due to loss of collagen and elastin. It is never too late to get in the habit of applying sunscreen before dressing so that the neck (front and back) and upper chest are still exposed and available for full coverage. Treatment of the aging neck may not be a simple matter, and if surgery is not indicated or desired, a non-invasive modality to consider for skin laxity, jowls and neck bands is the Polydioxanone thread lift. The insertion of these non-permanent, absorbable sutures may provide a significant, immediate improvement with minimal bruising and downtime. How Mental Health Affects the Immune System

I

ncreasing evidence of the relationship between mental health and immune functioning indicates that immune system cells are actively involved in regulating brain function. One specific cell protein, cytokines, links depression with reduced immune functioning. It causes inflammation throughout the central nervous system and can cause physical symptoms commonly associated with depression. Stress causes known physiological changes in the body. When the brain believes we are under stress, our body reacts with an elevation in heart rate and a divergence of blood flow. When the stress is lifted, the immune system begins to heal itself. Mindfulness meditation can have benefits for health and performance, including reduced blood pressure, better pain tolerance, enhanced cognitive function, ability to cope with stress more effectively (physical, mental and emotional), better sleep and have an improved immune system. Being aware of the connection between mental health and our immune system may be able to improve our immune functioning and thereby our overall physical health. For those who are experiencing chronic physical symptoms that have little or no explanation, they may be linked to a co-occurring mental health issue. here is a lot of information concerning how to improve our own immune systems, which defend our body against disease-causing microorganisms, but let’s also consider the condition of our home, which could be contributing to unhealthy living conditions. We have all heard of mold, or toxins found in some manmade flooring including wood laminates and carpeting, but we have to look further into health issues with building materials during and after construction. Even if the most green and benign materials are employed for the construction, conditions of our indoor environment can be imperfect. Some of the factors may be due to: vibration effects, poor acoustic characteristics, dysfunctional lighting, extremes of humidity, inadequate air exchange and toxicity mediated through the soil. Currently the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is performing investigations on the potential health hazard of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can be found in roofing, siding, flooring, water and sewer pipes, to name a few. As a home buyer, we have the right to investigate and inspect the condition of a home before exchanging keys. As a renter, be aware of what possibly could be a hazard before renting. With the hidden potential hazards, many are going back to the basics and building their own home with complete green building materials. When a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Wanders

T

by Elaine Gerwin

his is the daily concern and nightmare feared most by many with spouses, parents or grandparents with Alzheimer’s or dementia: that a loved one will become confused and wander. Worse, she or he might run into harm. According to the American Alzheimer’s Association, more than 60 percent of people with Alzheimer’s or dementia will wander, and if they are not found within 24 hours, will suffer serious injury or death. Here are some steps to provide you with ways to help a loved one stay safe in their home.

• Make time for regular exercise to minimize restlessness. • Consider installing locks that require a key. • Position locks high or low on the door; many people with dementia will not think to look beyond eye level. • Keep in mind fire and safety concerns for all family members; the lock(s) must be accessible to others and easy to open. • Try a barrier like a curtain or colored streamer to mask the door. A “stop” sign or “do not enter” sign also may help. • Place a black mat or paint a black space on your front porch; this may appear to be an impassable hole to the person with dementia. • Add child-safe plastic covers to doorknobs. • Consider installing a home security system or monitoring system designed to keep watch over someone with dementia. • Consider a wearable GPS digital device or other technology to track or locate a person who wanders off. • Put away essential items such as the confused person’s coat, purse or glasses. Some individuals will not go out without certain articles. • Have the person wear an ID bracelet and sew ID labels in their clothes. • Keep a current photo on hand in case you need to report your loved one missing. • Register the person likely to wander with the police department or the Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return program. • Tell neighbors about your relative’s wandering behavior and make sure they have your phone number.

Successful people such as Tony Robbins and Oprah Winfrey do this to bring effective changes in every area of life. The most effective, scientifically-proven technique is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). SPEECH IN SONG:

A Grand Marriage by Sarah Evans

A

s we all know, we who are in form live in an existence of duality. From left and right, male and female, night and day, yin and yang and so forth into infinity, we seek constantly and consistently to come into balance or unification. Some of us have chosen the word polarity because it rings more to the tune of unification that humanity so desperately needs. In singing, too, there are distinct and different natures between tone and sound manifestation, speech sounds and musical sound, vowels and consonants. For this article, we will attend to the opposites: speech sounds and musical sound. Musical sound is the unconstraint free-flowing principle. On the other hand, the speech sounds are described as the conscious molding and forming principle. Here we can see a polarity at the functional level of singing. As one researches, it becomes clear that a singer’s orientation to the experience of this functional polarity must also be a polar, a dual one. Once the singer opens the path to the musical sound stream, she must retreat from her own will and feelings to give free reign to its flow. On the other hand, the nature of the “word”, the material/form creative principle, calls for strong formative forces. The School for Speech in Song, using specific spiritual/science-based exercises, separates the two sounds, speech and melody, before bringing them together in a grand marriage: song. Sarah Evans is a musical artist with an emphasis on the sound of the human voice. She received her BA from the UofA specializing in voice and choir and met her teacher, Christiaan Boele, a master teacher of “Uncovering the Voice”, a method endorsed by the spiritual scientist Rudolf Steiner. Having completed the training course, Evans shares the exercises for the birth and blessing of voice at The School for Speech in Song, in Tucson. Connect at 520-661-6666 or SpeechInSong@gmail.com.

hen people meet Dinah Rodrigues, they usually cannot believe her age. This 91-year-old lady has better posture, a healthier glow and more energy and vitality than most people 50 years younger Dinah Rodrigues than her. Rodrigues is a Brazilian professor of psychology and the creator of Hormone Yoga. Her practice is about 30 years old, and consists of a series of dynamic asanas,

pranayama (abdominal breathing) and relaxation. She has conducted many studies to prove the effectiveness of hormone yoga, but she herself is the best example. Most people her age present with a slouched posture that leads to shallow breathing. Older people commonly have decreased immunity that is not connected to age as much as it is to postural changes and decreased physical activity. Small children breathe naturally through their bellies, but as we age, we lose that healthy habit. In these modern times, we are exposed to daily stress, prolonged sitting, slouching in cars, in front of the TV or computer, and a lack of physical activity. The combination of all these factors, along with “sucking our belly in” to look slimmer

and trim leads to shallow breathing and therefore an increase of stress. As our postures change to a slouched position, our bodies and minds perceive that as a stressed, “fight or flight” response. Our breath naturally becomes shallow, deepening the stress response and increasing production of the stress hormone cortisol. Prolonged exposure to stress increases inflammation and compromises overall well-being and immunity. There is no question about the health benefits of yoga for flexibility, stress reduction and mind-body connection. Hormone Yoga, however, is a completely different level of yoga. One of the most important components of Hormone Yoga is “bastrika”, abdominal breathing combined with rhythmic movement. This modality helps to massage important glands including the thymus, an important part of the lymphatic system. T-cells are the thymus gland’s specialty, helping us fight viruses, foreign invaders and bacteria. Abdominal breathing combined with movements helps to move lymph fluid, return it into the circulatory system and improve immunity. It helps to stimulate relaxation response, balance our neurovegetative system, relieve pain and decrease heart beat and high blood pressure. Hormone Yoga is a unique practice that helps balance hormonal levels and relieve many hormone related issues including PMS, infertility, PCOS, insomnia, stress, anxiety, hot flashes, hypothyroidism and more. Lydie Vagnerova is a certified teacher of Hormone Yoga by Dinah Rodrigues—among only a few teachers in the U.S. certified to teach this practice. Vagnerova suffered with hypothyroidism for 27 years and was on high dose of hormones. After one year of practicing hormone yoga, she has been off medication for a year and a half. During three years of practicing hormone yoga, she never had any colds, flus or any inflammatory issues. On Uneven Ground Strengthening the Mind-Body-Earth Connection

A

by Linda Joy Stone

fter being in Central Mexico for a month, I discovered that my body felt revitalized from walking on uneven ground. The crude, cobbled-stone streets and high curbs in Lake Chapala, Oaxaca and Guanajuato helped stabilize my distorted cervical and lumbar spine and offered relief from chronic pain and stiffness. Mexico is notorious for its uneven terrain that demands paying attention and watching where you step, which includes dodging holes, tree roots and sleeping dogs. Maybe it was walking miles every day, but I felt stronger and more muscularly toned wandering Mexico’s challenging obstacle-course streets. The benefits of irregular terrain are also found locally, just by going off-road and wandering the rocky, sandy arroyos and hiking trails. The eye-brain-foot proprioception of walking on uneven ground and trails is keenly activated with each variable step. Proprioception is the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion and equilibrium in order to maintain balance. The brain and body have to work a little harder when navigating uncertain topography. This synchronous process helps to fine-tune brain synapses and neurotransmitters that

send electrical signals to muscle fibers to facilitate coordinated movement. Walking on uneven ground is what our bodies were designed to do, like most other mammals, not habitually walking on flat, concrete surfaces. Hard, unyielding planes only contribute to our chronic back and knee pain complicated by added weight from long hours of sitting in front of computer and TV screens. Habitual, repetitive motion, as well as lack of movement, are recipes for distress. Orienting oneself to uneven ground can be challenging to someone who does not feel sure-footed or stable on their feet, and one must heed those messages. Muscles can contract or spasm as the body

adjusts its inner compass. A walking stick or pair of hiking poles can assist in creating greater confidence and stability. Well-fitting and well-supportive walking shoes are essential to establish a firm connection between us and the earth. Being aware of how we carry ourselves on our skeletal frame, adjusting our stride and consciously breathing (in through our nose, out through our mouth) can carry us miles in a relaxed, flowing rhythm. As the earth appears to be shifting beneath our feet, we are given the opportunity to face and explore the everyday challenges of being human. We can feel destabilized by health, social or global issues and yet greet them with wonder and curiosity. We are essentially walking on new ground every day simply by being alive. Learning how to move more fluidly upon this spinning planet may be what is called for to more strategically navigate living in unpredictable times. What if one of the most beneficial commitments we can make to ourselves is moving our bodies daily to the rhythms of Mother Earth and her asymmetries? It may feel awkward at first but, in placing one unsteady foot in front of the other, we will gain greater strength, mobility and resilience in order to effectively adapt to the inevitable changes before us. Help the Immune System Function Properly with Diet by Sherman R. Springfield

A

s humans, and mostly in our healthy state, we do a pretty good job of fighting most diseasecausing microorganisms. We are able to defend ourselves against sickness and disease by way of our immune systems, without which, we would be in serious trouble and nonexistent. The immune system in our body is made up of many cells, tissues, our organs and, most importantly, white blood cells that seek out and destroy the diseasecausing organisms or substances that are constantly invading our bodies. Unfortu-

nately, there is no magic pill to rev up our immune system in the way we would like, but there are healthy life changes and diet guidelines that can help. The immune system is exactly that— a system. This system is very complex and requires a great deal of care, balance and harmony. General healthy strategies like exercise, diet and keeping stress under control are an absolute must. By following obvious guidelines, we can make a difference in our own immunities. We can protect our immune system by not smoking, maintaining a healthy

weight, limiting alcohol, exercising, getting adequate sleep, avoiding infections with proper hand washing and handling stress as well as possible. There are some ways in which a healthy diet and lifestyle can have a big impact on a healthy immune system. Good nutrition can help in our quest toward a healthy immune system. There are foods that have been linked to having positive improvements on immune system functions. Some foods have strong properties that can benefit different areas of the immune system such as our heart, which obviously plays a huge role in the health and immune system in general. Most of the best foods for immune support are plant-based foods, which have a strong reputation and seem to support a healthy lifestyle. There are other important key areas that contribute to a strong immune system such as keeping healthy gut bacteria within our GI tract. Other foods even act as natural antibiotics helping to keep disease at bay. A diet high in fruits and vegetables should keep plaque buildup away from the arteries and help maintain a healthy heart. There are many probiotic foods to keep the digestive system healthy, such as fermented sauerkrauts and kimchi, plus a wide assortment of yogurts and kefirs that have powerful amounts of healthy beneficial bacteria. Foods that protect against free radicals and serve as natural diseasefighters include garlic, onion and ginger, which are considered superfoods and are some of the strongest antioxidants. We only get our one body, so we need to care for it with all we have. Proper care and healthy nutrition will pay off in the long run. Sherman R. Springfield, of Springfield Coaching, is very passionate about nutrition and offers consultations on how to develop a healthy diet plan and put it into practice. He also works with children, teaching about health and weight loss for a positive start in their lives. Connect at 520-599-1089 or SpringfieldCoaching.com.

eiki, a very powerful system of energy healing which originated in the Tibetan Monasteries, was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the 19th century. Reiki is the science and art of activating, directing and applying the natural universal life force energy to promote healing and to maintain a state of positive wellness. To put it succinctly, reiki is a Universal Life Force energy which is safely used at any time, any place to heal at all levels of Lydia Isenberger being, and since universal means applicable or common to all purposes, conditions or situations, it is then safely used to heal humans, pets, plants and situations. Reiki releases emotional and mental blockages, relieves pain and stimulates the immune system. In addition, reiki energy transcends time and space, and has an intelligence of its own and therefore knows where and when healing is needed. Reiki works by the laying of hands from the reiki practitioner to the client. The client remains dressed, and is either sitting or lying down on a reiki table. Once the practitioner has had a Reiki Initiation, the energy transferal happens automatically when hands are placed on another individual with the intent of healing. After a healing, most clients experience a deep feeling of relaxation and well-being. There are three levels of reiki. Level I teaches how to do healing on self and others as long as the client is present. Level II teaches three symbols and sounds, energy exercises and how to do distance healing. Levels III and IV are for practitioners who wish to become Reiki Masters/Teachers. Dr. Lydia Isenberger, Certified Reiki Master, has written two reiki manuals, Quan Yin Reiki and Mayan Reiki. She has been teaching and practicing reiki for over two decades in the U.S. and Europe, and is currently teaching all levels of reiki and other metaphysical courses at Unity of Tucson Church. Were you an art kid in school? I enjoyed art in elementary school and then had an art teacher in junior high who I dearly loved. Those were tumultuous times, not unlike today. I was in junior high during the Vietnam War and then in high school as the women’s movement, Black Panthers, the birth of the Chicano Movement and ecological awareness began to gain steam. Once I got to high school, I had a great teacher named Barbara Pennington, who made a huge impact on me. At one point, she insisted that I go into Manhattan to see the Georgia O’Keeffe Retrospective held in 1970. I was so moved seeing O’Keeffe’s oil paintings in person. To this day, I regularly include clouds in my imagery as an ongoing homage to Georgia.

Enriching Life with Color

ver the past year, the intention of these Artist Spotlight interviews has been to share the voices and stories of our neighbors who brave the sometimes choppy waters of daily life to dive down deep into their own creative practice. In these tumultuous and changing times, creative practice seems especially important. Whether to focus our hearts and minds on beauty or to express our alarm and outrage about a myriad of global and personal challenges, creative work can be an outlet of immense power for understanding and healing. Robin Westenhiser is a local artist whose work spreads joy through imagery filled with pattern and color, whether paying homage to cultural traditions or Mother Nature’s creatures. Westenhiser and her husband live in what she describes as a “nature corridor” in the foothills area of Sunrise and Swan. Living in such direct proximity to the desert, her home and surrounding land is graced with daily visits from a host of wildlife including javelinas, roadrunners, rabbits, snakes, squirrels and others. They lounge, play and nap as she observes them from the vantage point of the “magic window” in her living room. Robin, what brought you to the visual arts path? Like several others you have interviewed, I come from the east coast, where I was raised by parents who were great advocates of the arts. I am originally from Connecticut. My mother loved museums so she took us regularly to New York City as kids to visit the Whitney, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Contemporary Art. Seeing works of great art influenced and affected me deeply at a young age. Was your mom a practicing artist? Actually, Mom served as a cartographer in World War II. She

Did your high school experience lead you to attend an art school or enroll in an art program for college? Interesting story! The high school counselor was not particularly encouraging about my prospects. I had focused mostly on studio art classes throughout high school and didn’t do especially well in academic subjects. The counselor advised me to apply to a range of schools, so I applied to Pratt Institute, a top art school, Massachusetts College of Art, a small local art school in Connecticut, and the University of Bridgeport, a state school. As it turned out, and somewhat to the counselor’s surprise, I was accepted at Pratt and rejected from the state school. I did a year at Pratt, but found the environment to be super competitive. It just wasn’t a good fit for me. I ended up taking a year off to figure out what I wanted to do next. (It’s called a “gap year” these days, but back then wasn’t quite as common.) How did you end up in Tucson? In 1973, my then-boyfriend/now husband and I decided to head out to California. Like many young adults in those days, we loaded up a VW van and drove cross-country. On our way west, we stopped in Tucson and loved it here so much, we stayed. Once we got settled, I enrolled in the University of Arizona’s art department. I was so lucky to have been able to study with Bruce McGrew, beloved watercolorist, and Maurice Grossman, who founded the U of A ceramics department, among other instructors. Did you pursue the B.F.A. at the University of Arizona? You know, at one point I assessed my work and decided I didn’t have the strength, on several levels, to “make it” in the competitive arena of the gallery world. I chose to receive my degree in Art Education instead of Studio Arts. After graduating, I taught in local schools either as an art teacher or as a long-term sub. I worked at Amphi High School and Doolen, among other schools. After a few years of doing that work, I returned to UA and studied for a Masters of Arts degree focused on education for “gifted and talented” students. How did the degree serve in your evolving creative life? In 1983, we moved back east to New York City when my husband was offered a job there. I did some work with gifted and talented elementary-aged students before accepting a position in a small

special education high school. The students were court-mandated to this school, which meant they came mostly from troubled backgrounds. These students were socially, emotionally and learning disabled as opposed to physically disabled.

How did you eventually make it back to Tucson and your own creative work? We moved back to Tucson in the early ‘90s after having lived back east for eight or nine years. Once we returned, I decided I had had enough of teaching art after that super challenging work for several long years. I have always loved Mexico and folk art, so when we moved back, I started an eBay business selling Mexican arts and crafts that I collected specifically to sell. Did you return to your own art-making at that time? Not immediately. I did the eBay business for around eight years, until postage rates went up and the whole eBay scene kind of exploded. About 12 years ago, around 2006, we had a wonderful gallery in town called Galeria La Sirena. The gallery was founded and run by a great humanitarian, Sherry Teachnor, and primarily featured artwork by Haitian, Caribbean and Mexican folk artists. I loved the gallery and was so inspired by her collections that I started doing a series of Dia de los Muertos images in acrylic on canvas. The work was filled with rich color and patterns, along with skulls and other Dia de los Muertos symbols. Sherry invited me to share my work at La Sirena and featured the paintings on their wall for eight years or so. Did you ever encounter push-back about the issue of cultural appropriation back then? Actually, my work has always been created in the spirit of honoring the Dia de los Muertos traditions in my own style. I can honestly and happily say I didn’t encounter that criticism as a local artist while exhibiting at La Sirena. How has your work evolved since Galeria la Sirena closed its doors? Where can people see your imagery these days?

Can you talk about how your creative practice serves you as a healing tool? Painting is definitely a therapeutic practice. I find I can step away from outer concerns as I am calmed, engaged and brought into a mindful state of awareness when I paint. The act of painting involves a lot of problem solving and I get lost in the process.

Dance of The Kings; Hootie On My Mind; Together Forever - by Robin Westenhiser

Had your degrees prepared you for the rigors of working with these “special” kids? Well, in reality, my students were much more responsive to an art therapy approach than the typical art education curriculum I trained in. Many, if not most, of my students lived in seedy hotels and had next to no family support. These kids lived an unimaginably hard life. I did my best to bring them the possibility of authentic expression and a small sense of meaning to their school experience.

I am currently painting more critters and honoring Mother Nature in my own version of still life work. I show often at Art House Centro, located downtown, and currently, I have a piece in the Tucson Loteria Show at Galeria Senita on Tucson Boulevard.

And last, how do you feel your imagery serves community? I have been told often that my work brings happiness to viewers. I love color and hope my exaggerated sense of color points viewers in the direction of appreciating the richness and depth of color our desert home is all about. Plant Options as Alternative Medicine by Jeffrey Green

E

astern medicine has evolved over thousands of years. During that time, advancements in identifying and using herbal medicine has been a cornerstone in the treatment of numerous conditions and disease. Today, after millennia of trial and error, research and documentation, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is still grounded in the usage of herbal remedies, and is used as the standard system of medicine throughout China. The practice and use of herbal medicine has grown in popularity worldwide and is typically used as an alternative medicine. Herbal medicine has earned the right to become standard practice treatment rather than just an alternative. The word alternative, however, does mean that there are options for those becoming their own healthcare advocate when treating mild to severe ailments. For too long, Americans have put their trust in synthetic, man-made medications that usually just treat the symptoms. The medications usually contain a chemical formula that can be found in nature. Often times, more medications are 32

needed to combat those symptoms. It turns into a revolving use of medicines, all of which are not getting to the root of the issue in which treatment is required. Because “health defense” is the focus of this month’s issue, it’s vital that people know their options for both active and preventative care. With close to 12,000 recorded herbal remedies available, it’s surprising that it hasn’t become more prevalent here in the west. It’s certainly easier to just take whatever pill, tablet or liquid that’s been prescribed by the doctor. It can take some time and involve some footwork when researching the many different herbal remedies available. But when it comes to taking control of our own health care, in this case, it’s worth the extra work if the disease is being treated and not simply the symptoms. Usually used for making a strong tea, herbs are steeped in boiling water for periods lasting up to one hour. The taste is commonly known to be unpleasant, but is ingested anyway by hundreds of millions, knowing that the benefits received far out-

NaturalTucson.com

weighed the bitter taste. Again, it appears so much easier to just take a pharmaceutical which often times comes in the form of a pill, where there’s no taste involved. The decision needs to be based on effectiveness when determining which course of action to take while healing. For many, a little extra footwork and a bitter taste is well worth the positive outcome. Herbal medicines are widely sold throughout the U.S., but are labeled as a supplement where no prescription is needed. The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the usage or safety of the products. Used mostly in the states as a complementary medicine, it has yet to be used as a primary remedy for illness and disease, even though herbal medicine usually targets the root of the condition rather than just treating the symptoms that accompany specific ailments. There are numerous Chinese Herbalists here in Tucson, and they would be happy to help answer any questions and offer guidance. As the healthcare crisis continues to complicate basic care, becoming an advocate for personal treatment is now more widespread. Instead of taking numerous prescriptions, some being prescribed to combat the side effects of other medications, it’s reassuring to discover that natural and time-tested options are available. How does herbal medicine begin to compete with Big Pharma? The answer lies with knowledge. Become familiar with basic herbs, and not just the ones that are perhaps in the kitchen pantry. Jeffrey Green, M.A., is a local free-lance writer, Reiki Practitioner and staff member for Natural Awakenings Magazine. Currently, Jeffrey’s mission is to educate as many people as possible to the benefits of natural medicine.

Also use the resources available through the dispensary that you choose to visit. One caution should be when looking at the names of these many different strains. There are many strain names that can be misinterpreted as being harmful or even illicit, but are harmless and grown to only help the patient and their highest good. The first step in preventing dependency is to avoid opioids completely, says Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, in WinstonSalem, North Carolina: “Opioids don’t work for chronic pain. hronic pain affects 100 million Americans, with annual treatment costs reaching $635 billion, according to the Institute of Medicine. Worse, opiate-derived pain medications, conventional medicine’s go-to treatment for chronic pain, are addictive and deadly. The Annals of Internal Medicine reports that an estimated 2 million Americans suffered from opioid use disorder involving prescription drugs as of 2016 while 12 million admitted to misusing them. Legal and illegal opioids killed 64,070 Americans in 2016, 21 percent

more than the previous year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some opioid addiction stems from use of illegal recreational drugs like heroin and cocaine, but the National Institute of Drug Abuse testified to the U.S. Senate that as of 2014 more than four times as many Americans were addicted to prescription opioids (2.1 million) than heroin (467,000). Natural approaches, less harmful in relieving pain and thereby preventing drug addictions, are addressing and ameliorating long-term back or neck, nerve and

Mindfulness meditation: Zeidan recommends mindfulness meditation and cites a University of Massachusetts study of people with chronic pain in which pain lessened by at least 65 percent after 10 weeks of this practice. “Mindfulness meditation is about discipline and regulating one’s attention. It appears to shut down the thalamus, the brain’s gatekeeper, and the brain’s ability to register pain,” explains Zeidan. Yoga: Strongly positive effects have been reported in several studies, including one on 150 veterans with chronic low back pain from the Veterans Administration San Diego Healthcare System. It showed that 12 weeks of yoga classes reduced pain and opioid use, and improved functionality of participants; many of them had suffered back pain for more than 15 years. While regarding it as helpful for chronic pain with little risk of addiction, he concludes it’s “great for a small handful of conditions, but it’s not the cure-all that some are suggesting.” CBD oil: Dr. Hyla Cass, of Marina del Rey, California, an integrative physician expert in psychiatry and addiction recovery, and author of The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free, is more comfortable with CBD (cannabidiol) oil. It’s a hemp product legal in 45 states, provided it qualifies in non-addictive levels of THC, the component of cannabis that induces euphoria (see TheCannabis Industry.org/state-marijuana-policies-map). Some CBD oils contain trace amounts of THC, not enough to induce a “high” or contribute to addiction, but there are also products that contain no THC at all. By definition, hemp’s THC content is less than 0.3 percent versus marijuana’s 5 to 35 percent. “CBD oil won’t make you high,” says Cass. “In and of itself, CBD oil is very potent. You don’t need the THC for pain relief. There’s no need to go down the slippery slope of using an illegal substance.” In addition to CBD oil’s pain-relieving effects on the endocannabinoid system, says Cass, it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory, which contributes to its effectiveness in addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain, confirmed by University of South Carolina research. Cannabis and the Immune System

S

cience has shown that we have receptors in our body that bind to the cannabinoids, like THC and CBD, in cannabis. It is named the endocannabinoid system. This system has different receptors that act on other systems in our body, like the central nervous system and the immune system. CB2 receptors, which act on our immune system, have been shown to lower inflammation, boost the immune system and assist in creating homeostasis in the body. This is very effective for patients living with chronic pain, autoimmune illnesses, cancer and other illnesses that are fueled by inflammation or lack of immunity. Cannabis also has the potential to be used for decreasing the progression of neurocognitive decline and other neurodegenerative diseases. Many patients experience inflammation relief from using cannabis, along with relief for other ailments and imbalances. Cannabis is safe to use and can be titrated, or taken in micro-doses, to give relief throughout the day without the risk of having any undesired effects.

on Why Gratefulness Brings Happiness by April Thompson

K

risti Nelson has dedicated her career to leading, funding and strengthening organizations committed to progressive social and spiritual change. Today, at the helm of the Network for Grateful Living, she is helping awaken thousands of people around the world to the life-changing practice of gratefulness. Co-founded by Benedictine monk, teacher and author David Steindl-Rast, the network offers educational programs and practices that inspire and guide a commitment to grateful living, and spark the transformative power of personal and societal responsibility. Earlier in her career, Nelson founded a values-based fundraising, consulting, training and leadership coaching company, working with groups such as the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, Buddhist Peace Fellowship and the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society. She also served in director-level positions for the Soul of Money Institute, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society. Nelson lives in Western Massachusetts with her family, grateful to be surrounded by the wonders of the natural world and connected to a vibrant, loving and grateful global community.

Why is it helpful to differentiate between gratefulness, gratitude and thanksgiving? 38

Tucson Edition

Gratefulness is a proactive orientation to life that originates inside. You wake with a sense of thankful awareness for the gift of another day, of all the miraculous things your body did overnight to keep you alive and healthy and an all-encompassing sense of the great fullness of life. Gratitude is more of a response to something going well; anything from receiving the perfect present to five green lights on the way home to beautiful weather. It can become an addictive pursuit to try to get life to deliver something positive again and again, whereas gratefulness emanates from a more unconditional core. Thanksgiving bubbles up when we’re so filled with a sense of gratefulness—that great fullness—that we overflow into finding ways to express thanks aloud and in actions, such as delivering praise or being of service.

In what way is happiness related to gratefulness?

The truth is that it’s not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. We can have all the things that should make us happy, and that we wish would make us happy, but unless we feel grateful for what we have, it’s likely nothing will truly make us happy. Happiness can be susceptible to outside circumstance, whereas gratefulness is an orientation we can more consistently maintain.

NaturalTucson.com

How do we cultivate gratefulness as a way of being, rather than an intermittent feeling?

It’s a three-step process: stop, look and go. First, we pause to be present; slow down enough to notice all the things for which we can be grateful. Second, we enlarge our perspective to take nothing for granted and acknowledge that life is short and uncertain, so we are grateful each day we wake up. This step is also about being aware of our privileges, starting with our ability to see, hear, move about and function. It keeps us aware, awake and alert. Consider how we feel when electricity returns after an outage or when we can use our hand or foot after a cast comes off. Within minutes, we can forget how appreciative we were for those things, so we need to build reminders into our lives. Third, we generate possibilities. Find ways to express appreciation or nurture something we care about by engaging in an actively grateful way. Even when we suffer hardship, shifting our awareness to notice whatever is sufficient, abundant and beautiful enables us to be grateful. This creates a ripple effect, bringing more reasons to be grateful. It’s a radical way to live.

Which other qualities of life that people now seek give you hope?

It gives me hope when people seek contentment. Paradoxically, discontent gives me hope too, because when people recognize injustice and social biases, it pushes us to engage; to stand up and take note of what’s not okay and needs to be changed. Love also gives me hope, especially when individuals seek to love more generously, inclusively and compassionately. It brings me the most hope of all when I see people building bridges and stretching their own capacity to love beyond their comfort zone.
