¡Saludos Greetings! cordiales!

R

ecibimos el nuevo año con ánimo y muchos deseos de prosperar; hacer de cada día uno único y de provecho es la meta. Espero que junto a sus familiares hayan tenido la mejor navidad de muchas.

Para mí es un verdadero placer poder dirigirme a ustedes una vez más y sobre todo compartir los logros que hemos alcanzado. El pasado año en el mes de julio cumplimos nuestro primer aniversario. Es muy emocionante ver como el tiempo te permite crecer a la vez que aprendes de cada situación, yo me lo disfruto todo. Ha sido de gran bendición poder servirles a nuestros clientes. El tiempo ha transcurrido muy de prisa, pero no en vano. En septiembre abrimos un nuevo horizonte llegando a St. Thomas, cubriendo así tres destinos con la re-

vista; Puerto Rico, República Dominicana y St. Thomas. ¿Y ahora, cuál será nuestro próximo punto de circulación para llegar a más lectores?

Nada más y nada menos que las tiendas por departamento Wal-Mart y las Farmacias Walgreens en Puerto Rico.

A partir de esta edición ya estamos en manos de nuevos y más lectores. ¡Qué emocionante!

Esta era una meta compartida, desde el inicio lo dejamos saber a varios de nuestros clientes, pero a pesar de compartir este sueño, nos mantuvimos firmes hasta llegar a él. Nuestro interés es poder llegar a todo aficionado y amante del mundo náutico.

Ahora no tenemos límites. Agradecida de Dios que es quien me lo ha permitido y a todos nuestros clientes que han depositado su confianza en nosotros.

e welcomed the New Year with enthusiasm and a strong desire to succeed. The goal is to make the most of every unique day. I hope that, together with your families, you had the best Christmas ever.

It is my pleasure to address you once again and above all share the successes we have achieved. Last year in July we had our first anniversary. It is very exciting to see how time allows you to grow while you learn from every situation, I really enjoy that. It has been a blessing to serve our customers. Time has passed very quickly, but not in vain. In September, we opened a new horizon by coming to St. Thomas, and taking our magazine

to three locations; Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and St. Thomas. And now, what will be our next point of circulation in order to reach more readers? It will be none other than all the Wal-Mart department stores and Walgreens pharmacies throughout Puerto Rico. Starting with this edition we will be in the hands of many new readers. How exciting!

This was a shared goal, since the beginning we let several of our clients know about it, but despite sharing this dream, we never gave up until we reached it. Our interest is to reach every fan and lover of the nautical world. Now we have no limits. I’m thankful to God who is the one who has allowed it and to all our customers who have placed their trust in us.

Our group of collaborators has been joined by a successful woman, Ms. González Sylmarie Orengo, CEO of Puerto Rico de Adventura Magazine and owner of several restaurants in Puerto Rico. Welcome Sylmarie to our VIP group of collaborators. We also want to welcome our newest reporter, Mr. Freddie Nieves Colón, who has had vast experience in this nautical market for many years. love February. It's Valentines, chocolates, romantic dinners, love is in the air and all the boats are in Miami for the boat show from the 13th to the 17th of February and its starting to look awesome, my contacts tell me that there are more than 3000 boats on schedule to participate and 2000 commercial booths for this year… that’s a show.

We are talking about the newest luxury yachts, the most powerful powerboats, sailboats of all types and sizes, engines, electronics and marine gear, fishing gear, plus dozens of attractions and on-water workshops, this Show is to enjoy the boating lifestyle and shop the newest in recreational boats and many marine accessories. Sunday, November 2, 2013 after a long waking day at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show we are planning to leave for the day when I spotted this huge tuna tower between several Super Yachts, when I got to see it closer I was surprised, breathless, standing in the dock when I heard a gentlemen voice how said “would you like to come aboard”. I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Clifford S. Allenby how took the time to show me the yacht part by part. The 90ft Custom sport fisher motor yacht 'Satu' was built in New Zealand by Yachting Developments at their North Shore City shipyard.

Mr. Allenby and Satu Marine release the first Superyacht Sportfish at the 2013 Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show. Elite designers, engineers, big game anglers, and equipment manufacturers assembled to design this first Superyacht Sportfish. Yachting Developments, a builder with multiple Superyacht of the Year awards, delivered the attention to detail to make Satu 90’ a Superyacht Sportfish.

We started in the cock pit area where we went door to door the complete cockpit every part of it was design by World Class Anglers. The International Fighting Chair articulating pedestal provides rod tip clearance while fighting a world record marlin, and the transom door is large enough to bring in a “grander.” The view from the tuna tower is impressive, clear visibility of both water and cockpit, plus all major systems to operate Satu are at your fingertips. The tower was expertly designed, manufactured and built

by Bausch American Towers to enhance the ultimate fishing experience. Open flybridge design provides excellent visibility as well as comfortable space for outdoor dining and relaxing. The heart of the flybridge helm is

SAM Electronics top-of-the-line Integrated Navigation and Command System and MTU Integrated Ship Monitoring Systems.

Data is displayed on three 19-inch Hatteland Monitors with custom control panels.

The yacht's interiors are breath taking, floors made of Wenge wood and all interior furniture built out of Japanese ash veneer that has been designed by Robinson Marine Interiors. Satu's interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 guests overnight in 4 cabins, comprising a master suite, 1 double cabin and 1 twin cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 2 crew onboard in 1 cabin to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Robinson Marine designed a light and contemporary interior. Timber of a single Japanese Ash tree defines the elegant yet clean and contemporary interior. The galley has a spacious open design with a perfectly seamless, single-piece brushed stainlesscountertop. Four cabins are light, spacious, quiet retreats. Beautiful timbers, natural fabrics, and open design invite you in. Attention to the finest detail is the emerging theme in the Satu 90.Beneath her beautiful lines and classic styling, Satu 90’ has speed, range, maneuverability to turn on a dime, and the power to back down fast when needed. She has

top end speed in excess of 33 knots, and will cruise effortlessly at 30 knots. With over 2600 nautical mile range, she is designed to access in comfort remote untapped international fishing grounds. Her high speed planning hull provides smooth, fast, dry travel.

The mechanical room is impressive, a Superyacht high quality mechanical and pump room top to bottom inside a Sportfisher.

Powered by 2 MTU (16V-2000CR) 2,400hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screw propellers Motor yacht Satu is capable of a top speed of 33 knots, and comfortably cruises at 30 knots. She can carry around 17,034 liters of diesel on-board in her fuel tanks. Her water tanks store around 2,839 liters of fresh water. Satu 90 is magnificently powered by two 16V 2400hp MTU engines. Two 58K CAT Generators provide plenty of redundant power to drive all systems. Heinen & Hopman designed and built state-of-the-art refrigeration and mechanical systems to handle the most extreme conditions. All systems on board are superyacht quality, and most are redundant to ensure uninterrupted performance and safety.

After almost 2 hours, we have gone thru the complete yacht and she is perfect.

l pasado 16 de enero de 2014 el deportista y navegador español, Álvaro de Marichalar, llegó a las 18.00 horas a Flamenco Marina en la ciudad de Panamá procedente de Colón (Panamá); navegando a bordo de una embarcación de tres metros de eslora. El navegante zarpó el 12 de diciembre desde el puerto de Dinner Key (Miami, Florida, Estados Unidos) a bordo de su pequeña embarcación NUMANCIA rumbo a Panamá. El objetivo conseguido era llegar a Panamá ciudad; tras recorrer 2,500 millas (4,700Km) en 34 días pasando por nueve países: USA, Cuba, México, Belice, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y Panamá.

El marino español navegó en riguroso solitario (sin barco de apoyo) y siempre en pie durante doce horas al día. Este dormía en puertos donde podía conseguir combustible, agua y

alimentos. Algunas noches durmió a la deriva en alta mar sobre su diminuta embarcación; y entre sus pertenencias llevaba tres litros de agua y cuatro bidones suplementarios de combustible que le dan una autonomía de 150 millas náuticas (270 km) a NUMANCIA. Marichalar superó dos etapas muy difíciles a mar abierto, cruzó desde Florida a Cuba, 100 millas (180km) y navegó desde Cuba a México, 120 millas (220km). Esta travesía fue realizada navegando sin ver tierra y en riguroso solitario entre siete y 12 horas respectivamente. Entre sus pertenencias, Álvaro llevó consigo una copia del documental “El Mar del Sur, Balboa y su legado” dirigido por Juan Carlos Navia y con guión de José María Díez, en el que se ahonda en la figura del descubridor extremeño, Núñez de Balboa. El documental producido por el Gobierno de Extremadura y Canal Extremadura Televisión

ha sido promocionado en los países donde el deportista navarro recaló en esta Travesía.

El director de la Filmoteca de Extremadura, Antonio Gil Aparicio, había anunciado que cuando Marichalar concluyera este viaje visitaría Extremadura para explicar su experiencia en primera persona y hablar sobre la promoción de este trabajo documental con sello extremeño; realizada por el expedicionario pamplonés.

Esta es la expedición número 40 de Marichalar, quien posee 12 veces el record del mundo de navegación y Académico de la Real Academia de la Mar de España. ara algunos pasear en bote con la familia es solo un pasatiempo ocasional, mientras que para otros es su oficio a tiempo completo. Este es el caso de José “Tony” Moreno quien lleva 15 años detrás del timón de embarcaciones de todas clases y tamaños. A pesar de ser un trabajo sacrificado, para Moreno estar en contacto con el mar compensa los largos viajes y las veces que su vida ha estado en peligro por las condiciones del tiempo.

Esta pasión por el mar y los botes comenzó a muy temprana edad, ya que tanto su abuelo como su tío tenían botes y disfrutaban de la pesca.

De ellos aprendió sobre la pesca, el oleaje, las distancias marítimas, la importancia de conocer las condiciones del tiempo y a manejar una lancha. El próximo paso fue aprender sobre la estructura y el funcionamiento de las mismas, conocimiento que adquirió trabajando en el ensamblaje de botes para Miramar Marine por más de ocho años.

Cuando le pregunté sobre qué haría si algún día tuviera que prescindir de los métodos tecnológicos de navegación como lo son los sistemas de posicionamiento global (GPS), este respondió inmediatamente que estaba capacitado para dirigir su embarcación mediante cartas náuticas y un compás como se hacía antiguamente.

a cada detalle, pues reconoce que nada es más importante que la seguridad de los tripulantes y la suya.

Por ello, antes de cada viaje verifica con detenimiento los motores de la embarcación, la cantidad de combustible necesario, las hélices, los sistemas de posicionamiento global (GPS), la cantidad de salvavidas, las pistolas de bengala y todo el quipo de seguridad.

“Recuerdo que en una ocasión regresábamos dos embarcaciones a la Isla desde Samaná, República Dominicana, y tomamos la ruta del canal de La Mona de noche con una condición marítima malísima. Las olas eran de 15 pies de altura y apenas podía ver al otro bote que iba con nosotros; pensé que no llegaría a Puerto Rico. Pasó mucho tiempo y no veía ninguna luz que me mostrara que estábamos cerca de tierra, pero logré manejar la embarca-

ción hasta puerto seguro”, relató Moreno.

Ciertamente han sido muchos los viajes que ha hecho Tony Moreno como capitán desde que hizo de su pasatiempo su trabajo a tiempo completo. Sus recorridos a República Dominicana, Miami, Saint Thomas, las Bahamas, Long Island, Turks y Caicos, entre muchos otros lugares, han creado recuerdos y anécdotas imborrables.

“Lo mejor que tiene el mar es que puedes hacer el mismo viaje todos los días y cada uno es diferente. La paz y la tranquilidad que se respiran en medio del mar es inexplicable”, expresó Moreno de 55 años quien además nos indicó que sus botes favoritos son: Princess, Bertrams y Hatteras.

Finalmente le preguntamos qué hubiera sido si no fuera capitán, a lo que Moreno respondió: “definitivamente hubiera sido biólogo marino o ingeniero mecánico particularmente de embarcaciones”. Dicho esto no hay duda que el agua de mar corre por sus venas.

ctober 30 … yes my friends it’s that time of the year to leave everything behind for a few days and head up to the beautiful Fort Lauderdale, cool weather, friendly people and lots and lots of boats… no tropical storms on the forecast this year thanks god… Exhibition day left me very imprested; there are a lot of people visiting the show, more than years before on that same day. Several of the most notorious exhibitors and yachting reports concur that there was a significant amount of visitors this first day and that’s a very good start. Tents are full and there is a lot of excitement and many new things to see. For me these were the top five…

1- Monte Carlo 5 by Beneteau- I have to start with the Monte Carlo because it was the first impression for me before getting to the show, the banner was 7 floors high and was hanging from the Bahia Mar Hotel, great presentation, it was something you just had to look for at the docks. Clearly the new Monte Carlo 5 was inspired by the looks and designs of several superyachts launched in the last five years. But Group Beneteau has done them better in my opinion and produced what could be a new trend in mid-size cruising powerboats. This three-stateroom, two-head cruiser with flying bridge is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS500s and has details and amenities intended to appeal to veteran boaters looking to move both up and down. Terminations and details make of the Monte Carlo 5 a most see.

REDUCIR LOS AHOGAMIENTOS EN NUESTRAS PLAYAS ES LA META El Proyecto fue desarrollado como respuesta a la necesidad de reconocer los ahogamientos en nuestras playas puertorriqueñas como una problemática social.

A

nualmente el litoral puertorriqueño recibe miles de personas que deciden recrearse en él. Es en este mismo espacio donde desafortunadamente culmina la vida de aproximadamente 30 personas al año. En Puerto Rico, de acuerdo con las estadísticas provistas por el Instituto de Ciencias Forenses de Puerto Rico, un total de 371 personas han fallecido ahogadas en playas, desde 1999 hasta 2010.

Mujeres, hombres y niños son víctimas de esta problemática.

A partir de la información recopilada en las querellas policíacas y en los informes de las autopsias, se puede deducir que en la mayoría de los casos estos incidentes de ahogamiento obedecen a que las víctimas estaban bajo estado de embriaguez, estaban a cargo de personas que no tuvieron la diligencia necesaria para darse cuenta de que su niño se alejaba cada vez más de la orilla en su flo-

tador, decidieron visitar una playa de alta energía destinada particularmente a deportes como el surfing o fueron arrastrados por corrientes marinas o de oleaje y no supieron cómo salir de ellas.

Un 85% de las personas que se ahogan en Puerto Rico anualmente son hombres. En ambos casos, tanto hombres como mujeres, más del 75% se encontraba entre las edades de 16 años a 65 años, edad apta para formar parte de la fuerza laboral, lo cual repercute en una merma en productividad laboral nacional. Resulta importante destacar que menos del 5% de las víctimas de ahogamientos son turistas internacionales, lo cual indica que estamos perdiendo nuestros puertorriqueños.

Ante este panorama, surge el Proyecto de Seguridad Acuática para Puerto Rico del Programa Sea Grant de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en

Mayagüez. El proyecto se desarrolla como respuesta a la necesidad de reconocer los ahogamientos en nuestras playas puertorriqueñas como una problemática social, la cual si bien es ignorada por unos, para otros representa una huella muy profunda. El mismo tiene como meta reducir los ahogamientos en nuestras playas por medio de la gestión participativa a través de programas educativos, diseño de material didáctico y la dispersión del mismo, así también como el mejoramiento profesional de salvavidas de mar abierto.

very year, the Puerto Rican coastline receives the thousands of people who choose it for recreational purposes. This is the same area in which, regrettably, approximately 30 persons lose their lives. According to the Puerto Rico Forensic Sciences Institute, a grand total of 371 persons have drowned to death in Puerto Rican beaches between 199 up to 2010.

Men, women and children are all victims.

Going on the information gathered by police and autopsy reports, it can be deducted that in the majority of cases, these drowning deaths coincide with the victims’ having been in a state of inebriation, being under the care of others who failed to notice that the victim was in

trouble, having chosen to visit a high-energy beach more suited for surfing, or having been swept away by underwater currents or riptides and could not manage to escape them.

85% of Puerto Rico’s yearly drowning victims are men. In both men and women, more than 75% was between the ages of 16 to 65; that is to say, they were of age to be working, which translates into national productivity losses. It is also worth mentioning that at least 5% of drowning victims are international tourists, which means that the most affected population is our own.

In response to this situation, the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez campus’ Sea Grant Program’s Aquatic Safety Project was formed. The project was

developed as a response to the existing need to recognize drowning deaths in our beaches as a social problem which, despite being ignored by some, leaves a deep imprint on others. The project has the reduction of drowning deaths through participative action as its goal.

Such participative actions include educational programs, educational material design, and the dispersal of said materials, as well as open-surf professional lifeguard improvement.

Do you sail the coastal waters of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands? If so, for effective and safe navigation it is important for you to know about the Caribbean Coastal Ocean Observing System (CariCOOS) and the information about coastal weather and ocean conditions that this system provides.

CariCOOS is one of the eleven regional members of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS, http://www.ioos.noaa.gov) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) whose goals are to promote boating and water sports safety, support maritime trade and facilitate management of marine resources.

For reliable and updated waves, wind and current information, CariCOOS has strategically located numerous instruments around the coasts of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

A network of instrumented buoys provides information about wave height and direction, wind and currents speed and direction, and meteorological data.

The buoys are located North of San Juan, South of Ponce, North of Vieques, West of Rincón, and South of St. John and St. Thomas. In addition, CariCOOS has 13 weather stations to measure wind speed and direction and two CODAR high frequency antennas to generate surface current maps in Western P.R.

Para la temporada náutica del 2014, BOSS estará ofreciendo cursos y adiestramientos para una variedad de operadores de embarcaciones. Cursos diseñados para los operadores de motoras acuáticas (nuevo en PR y EEUU), el tradicional curso para los operadores de embarcaciones pe-

queñas de uno y dos motores fuera de borda, cursos de seguridad y rescate, cursos para los operadores de embarcaciones de paseo (Cruising) con motores de combustible diésel y con múltiples sistemas. Se ofrecerán también seminarios y adiestramientos en otras áreas tales como: uso y operación de remolques, navegación y uso de sus equipos; operaciones nocturnas, entre otros.

Resumiendo, en el 2014 BOSS comenzará un esfuerzo en ofrecerle a todo miembro de la comunidad nauta que necesite y busque educación y adiestramiento un curso que se ajuste a sus necesidades. Y lo mejor es que estos programas se estarán ofreciendo en varias marinas en las costas norte, este, oeste y sur.

De esta forma se podrá cumplir con la misión y a través de la educación y el adiestramiento que obtengan, contribuir a hacer de nuestras costas y mares un lugar seguro para todos los nautas.

n previous articles we have stated that “Knowledge provides us with Understanding but only practice delivers experience” As sea-lovers and boat operators in Puerto Rico, we want to enjoy our surrounding seas with confidence, feeling that because of our nautical knowledge and that practical experience we will assure our safety as well as that of our family, friends, other boaters in many or all unforeseen circumstances that we may encounter while boating.

GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2013!

F

or some, the #13 is synonym of bad luck. For Pesca, Playa y Ambiente, Inc. (PPA), 2013 has been a spectacular year. Here is a list of 13 positive achievements PPA accomplished during this year: 1. PPA was transformed from a group to a NPO. 2. Against all odds, we carried out 2 activities focused on cleaning and education.

3. We received the support of the prestigious "Sport Fishing Magazine" and its Editor in Chief, Mr. Doug Olander who joined us for the Mega Limpieza I (MLI) .

4. PPA received the support from the Guy Harvey Foundation and Mr. Guy Harvey honored us with his presence at the MLII. 5. PPA received the support from the Wyland Foundation.

6. Support from more than 40 local and international sponsors, for our two activities.

7. Alliances with groups in favor of the marine environment.

8. More than 850 volunteers attended the ML I and II. 9. Our volunteers removed more than 55,000 lbs. of solid waste from the estuary’s waters.

10. We received the cooperation and support of the municipalities of Loíza, Carolina and San Juan, as well as several governmental agencies (DRD, JCA, ADS, DNER, D.E., and C.T.).

11. We captured the attention of the local and international press; our two ML were covered by prestigious media such as El Nuevo Día and the NY Times, among many others.

12. We impacted groups of children through our educational workshops.

13. Last but not least, 2013 allowed us to meet and share with a group of excellent volunteers, which without expecting anything in return, were able to shown that when we work together there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.

Thanks to all who in one way or another have been part of this year’s magnificent journey and of the transformation of Pesca, Playa y Ambiente, Inc. We are already planning our agenda for this year and are in search of volunteers committed to the cause of preserving and educating about the importance of protecting our natural resources. l Club Náutico de San Juan (CNSJ), Pan Pepín Inc., con la ayuda del oficial de regatas y pasado presidente de la Federación de Vela de Puerto Rico (FVPR), Dr. David Kerr y José G. “Yoyo” Berrios del CNSJ, organizaron un torneo de regatas cortas conocido en el mundo de la vela como Match Racing. Lo más excitante y atractivo de esta modalidad de la vela es que se corren series de carreras cortas entre dos botes y en áreas costeras donde la contienda puede ser apreciada de cerca por la fanaticada o los curiosos.

Varios equipos rotan en una eliminatoria tipo “Round Robin” y en el proceso intercambian los botes entre sí. Los mejores atletas y medallistas centroamericanos y un grupo de Saint Thomas formaron seis equipos de cinco tripulantes quienes corrieron cada bote. El equipo de Marcos Texidor prevaleció en la contienda; Jorge Santiago y su equipo cosecharon el segundo lugar y el extraordinario equipo de Saint Thomas liderado por Agustina Barbano ganó la tercera posición. Seis embarcaciones IC-24 fueron utilizadas en esta competencia.

El Licenciado. Graham Castillo, director de la FVPR y director ejecutivo de BRISA Inc. nos indicó que: “Pan Pepín y el CNSJ con el respaldo de la FVPR, de todos los clubes y de BRISA han llevado a cabo uno de los eventos más lucidos y educativos que hemos tenido ya que fue apreciado claramente desde las facilidades públicas de Bahía Urbana en el Viejo San Juan. Además tuvimos la participación de los mejores oficiales de regata y árbitros internacionales en esta modalidad quienes se parearon con los nuestros, resultando en un entrenamiento completo y dinámico.”

Para los interesados en aprender más, las regatas de Match Racing se estructuran de acuerdo al Apéndice C de las Reglas de Regata de Veleros 2013-2016 publicadas por la Federación Internacional de Vela (conocida por sus siglas en inglés, ISAF, International Sailing Federation) mejor conocidas en el argot como las “Reglas de ISAF”. Este formato contempla la celebración de carreras cortas y rápidas donde los timoneles y sus tripulantes miden su ejecución en el control preciso del bote llevando a cabo tácticas de carreras muy diferentes a las regatas tradicionales. Las reglas de regata están diseñadas para establecer medidas de seguridad y promover una competencia justa.

El conocimiento cabal de las reglas de ISAF, la rapidez de la ejecución de maniobras, en control del bote y las habilidades técnicas y tácticas de cada equipo son los principales factores que hacen este evento atractivo a la fanaticada ya que se practica cerca de los muelles o costas. La intensidad y límites de tiempo para la salida requieren que los timoneles tomen decisiones en cuestión de segundos. La naturaleza fogosa y rápida de esta modalidad requiere la presencia de árbitros que los siguen en balsas de motor dentro de la cancha acuática y quienes se comunican con los botes participantes con banderines coloridos que imponen o liberan las faltas.

La ejecución de maniobras de dos botes girando paralelamente en vórtices extremadamente rápidos y la ejecución de vertiginosos cambios de dirección para buscar la delantera, presentan sin duda alguna, un excitante rodeo en el agua.

T

he Club Náutico de San Juan (CNSJ), Pan Pepín Inc., with the assistance of regatta officer and past president of the Puerto Rico Sailing Federation (PRSF), Dr. David Kerr and Jose “Yoyo” Berrios of the CNSJ, organized a tournament of short races better known in the sailing world as Match Racing. The most exciting and attractive aspect of this sailing modality is the execution of a series of short races between two boats that race close to the shore where the competition can be observed by fans and curious alike.

Several teams rotate in an elimination series or round robin where boats are also exchanged between them. The majority of our top athletes and Central American Games Medalists and a group from Saint Thomas formed six teams of the crew of five that ran each boat. Marcos Texidor’s team prevailed in the competition; Jorge Santiago’s team reaped the second place, and the extraordinary team from Saint Thomas, led by Agustina Barbano earned the third place. Six IC 24 boats were used in this competition.

Attorney Graham Castillo, Director of the PRSF and Chief Executive Officer of BRISA Inc. told us that: “Pan Pepín and the CNSJ with the help of the PRSF, all the clubs and BRISA executed one most the lucid and educational events that we have had as it

The Umpiring team was composed by the following professionals: Gary Shoemaker and David DeVries (International Umpires), Tom Rinda (Chief International Umpire), Attorney Eric Tulla (International Judge and Director Emeritus of the PRSF), and the National Judges and Directors of the PRSF Attorney Graham Castillo and Mr. Luis Matos.

For those interested on learning more, Match Races are structured in accordance with Appendix C of the Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016, published by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), better known in the sailing jargon as the “ISAF Rules”. This format is sailed in short and fast races where skippers and crews measure their execution, their precision, control of the boat and race tactics that differ in great measure from traditional

racing. The basic purpose of the ISAF Rules is to establish safety measures and to promote a fair competition.

Thorough knowledge of the ISAF Rules, fast maneuvers in control of the boats, and each team’s technical and tactical proficiency are the principal factors that make this event attractive to the fans since the event takes place close to the dock or the shoreline.

The intensity and the special time sequence at the start require skippers to make decisions in a matter of seconds.

The spirited and quick nature of this modality calls for the presence of referees in the water who follow the competitors within the course on motor rafts and communicate their decisions with the use of colorful pennants. The maneuver of two closely overlapped boats turning around each other at the same time in extremely fast vortices and rapid chances of direction in order to prevail over the other display without a doubt a exciting rodeo in the water.

Congratulations to the leadership of the CNSJ, Pan Pepín and its President José Texidor, to Mr. Bill Canfield, Dr. David Kerr, and all the exceptional volunteers, technicians and umpires who greatly contributed to set a historic precedent by presenting a great show of sailing close to the shore.

PESCA, PLAYA Y AMBIENTE PROVOCA LA VISITA AL PAÍS DEL BIÓLOGO MARINO, DR. GUY HARVEY Por: María Y. González

os proyectos de limpieza que dirige la organización sin fines de lucro Pesca, Playa y Ambiente (PPA), logran capturar la atención del conocido biólogo marino, Dr. Guy Harvey, provocando su visita al país.

Con esfuerzos titánicos de voluntarios y el apoyo de más de 50 auspiciadores locales e internacionales y la colaboración directa del “Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation”, esta organización marcó una vez más la diferencia el pasado 26 de octubre cuando llevó a cabo su segunda Mega Limpieza en los puntos: Terraplén de Piñones, Laguna Managua, Canal Suárez, Urb. Los Ángeles (Laguna San José) y Parque Dones.

Pesca, Playa y Ambiente, preparó una serie de actividades y reuniones entre el Dr. Harvey y funcionarios del gobierno local para llamar la atención

sobre la importancia de preservar los recursos marinos. En adición, se llevó a cabo un coctel de bienvenida en donde los seguidores del Dr. Harvey tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir con el artista y disfrutar del documental Whale Sharks of the Yucatan.

Poco fue el descanso que tuvo el Dr. Harvey en nuestra isla, pues ya a las siete de la mañana estaba en las facilidades del Cangrejos Yacht Club (sede del evento) animando al grupo de líderes voluntarios de la Mega Limpieza. A renglón seguido se montó en una de las embarcaciones a recorrer las áreas de limpieza y a reunirse con la gran cantidad de medios de prensa que cubrieron la actividad. Sorprendió a los presentes con su sencillez y entrega, al internarse en los mangles a recoger basura, llenarse las manos y ropa de fango, esto en vías de llamar la atención sobre el serio problema de des-

perdicios que afecta el ecosistema. La cantidad de basura fue impresionante, varios de los desechos recogidos en los alrededores fueron neveras, televisores, gomas de auto y carritos de compra, entre otros. Los mismos que fueron tirados y que las corrientes de aguas arrastraron hasta crear vertederos entre los mangles.

La iniciativa por parte de (PPA) ha permitido que grupos de voluntarios creen conciencia de esta mala práctica y les incita tanto a niños como adultos a través de actividades educativas a mantener y proteger estos recursos.

Resultó refrescante el ver la gran cantidad de niños que participaron de la actividad de recogido y de los talleres que se ofrecieron en la tarde, todos enfocados en la conservación de los recursos naturales.

e met Tom and his wife Ingrid Plocek at their arrival to Marina Puerto Del Rey in Fajardo, Puerto Rico to pick up the beautiful new boat they purchased, a Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 ' 2014, named STRAWBERY. We share at the delivery of this boat after Ingrid Plocek broke a bottle of Champange against the anchor of the boat, according to

tradition; it would bring good luck and safe travel on it. Tom decided to put everything in order and prepare the boat comfortably with all equipment and accessories they usually have, with the help of Mr. Carlos Esteves, General Manager of The Yachting Group (TYG), exclusive dealer of Beneteau for Puerto Rico, US Virgin Island and the Dominican Republic. After several days in Puerto Rico they organize their

ngrid and I have been cruising sailors for more than 40 years.

After we passed 65 years old, the effort of operating the anchor, winches and sails of our Beneteau First 42, which we enjoyed for 25 years, was becoming too much for us. We spent several years looking at alternates, and finally at the Baltimore Trawler fest, two years ago, we fell in love with the Beneteau Swift Trawler.

The Swift 34 seemed like the perfect boat for us. The wonderful open feeling in the main cabin extends into the cockpit. The few steps down into the sleeping cabins with the queen sized master bed accessible by each of us without disturbing the other and the full sized toilet is very comfortable. Full air conditioning is well appreciated when at dock but is unnecessary at anchor when natural ventilation is available. The bridge deck is always comfortable with any breeze and offers 360 views and sparkling night sky.

Before deciding on this boat we chartered the same model in San Francisco Bay for 4 days with our son, his friend and his family for a total of 6 people living together with no problems.

The boat handled very well in the strong winds and short chop around Alcatraz Island as well as under milder conditions.

It felt secure and responsive, much as our Beneteau sailboat. Anchoring was Tom and Ingrid Plocek

We will paint chain markers at 25 ft. increments. I am sure the extensive sailboat experience of the Beneteau designers and engineers has helped the performance and fine use of space in the Swift 34. The beauty of the woodwork is a trademark of Beneteau.

This short trip proved to us that this boat was perfect for the two of us plus the occasional visit from friends and family. Now we had to move on to the logistics of owning one.

We had often chartered bareboat in the Virgin Islands and planned to spend our winters living there on our boat. Now came the decision on exactly which Swift 34 to buy and how to get it to the Virgin Islands. We initially sought out a used boat, but were only able to find two used boats, one we chartered and would be too expensive to transport back east and the other was withdrawn when we asked about the price. We could have bought a new boat near where we lived in New Jersey but would then have to pay the tax and transit costs. Fortunately, through the Beneteau web site we located their dealer in San Juan, the Yachting Group (TYG) who I then contacted by telephone.

I was immediately put in touch with Carlos Esteves who guided us through the various steps needed to purchase, document and insure our vessel.

It turned out by taking delivery in the US Virgin Islands and we paid the normal transport costs from France to the USA. Carlos arranged for commissioning in Fajardo, Puerto Rico where we took possession on December 27, 2013 and I turned 70 years old on December 7, so this was a combination of Wedding, Birthday and Christmas presents all wrapped together.

The surprise celebration that Carlos and his colleagues arranged for us on the dock at Puerto Del Rey Marina will remain special in our minds forever. The Champagne flowed and the Strawberries and other fruit and food were delicious.

Over the next five days Carlos helped us continuously to get all the accessories we needed and review all the key operating systems as well as having two shake down cruises. We left Puerto Del Rey Marina on January 2 for Culebra. After two difficult hours in 6 ft. seas and a 20 knot headwind we arrived at Dakity Culebra and passed two vacation days at anchor before going on another 2 hours of 6 ft. seas and 20 knot winds to arrive here in St. Thomas.

We have now registered our boat and are finishing provisioning.

A Polished Gem At Sea

F

irst time I saw her was at the last year Miami International Boat Show and from a distance she is very easy to mistake with the 42-foot its progenitor—the family resemblance is very strong. The Beneteau Swift Trawler 44 replaces the Swift Trawler 42 and is a vast improvement over it. The hull is unchanged, which is a good thing since it’s a fine design. Get closer and you will notice the changes, starting with the new swimming platform added in and the subtle changes are much more obvious.

The swim platform is much deeper, though still bolted on, rather than part of the running surface.

And finally, the deckhouse is much wider, offset now to port. Options for boarding include an opening gate that is incorporated in the starboard bulwark, although it is now moved so that it is not directly across from the pilothouse door.

The boat deck runs farther aft, completely sheltering the aft deck, and the flybridge itself is much larger and extends farther forward over deckhouse windows that are vertical, rather than slanted. The Swift Trawler 44 mast gives the bridge clearance height of 25'5' (with the mast folded, it’s only 12'9. You can raise a sail to help steady the boat in a seaway, although the fuel tanks were also moved to improve the new model’s stability. The boom also acts as a crane to lift a good-sized dinghy up to the flybridge.

There are two hatches inset in the platform, one housing a storage compartment for wet lines, hoses, and the like, the other housing a ladder designed to reach deep and provide and holds that help you climb out of the water easier than before, and because of the new asymmetrical deckhouse, the starboard walkway is about 12 inches wider than on the 42, protected with athwart ship extensions of the flybridge overhead and with thigh-high bulwark extending forward to the pilothouse door. A wing door with tinted glass port on the starboard side helps to seal the aft cockpit from weather, while the port

side is sealed with an extension of the optional weather enclosure. The stainless steel anchor pulpit houses a single anchor, served by a 1,000-watt vertical windlass for chain and rope.

To starboard on the aft deck, a gently-canted stainless steel ladder

with wooden treads leads up through a tinted, shatterproof thermoplastic hatch-covered opening to the boat deck, which has space for an 8-foot inflatable dinghy immediately to port.

There’s seating for up to eight persons with an L-shaped bench seat to port with a removable wooden table, a combination sun lounge/bench seat to starboard, and two swivel helm seats that can pivot to join the crowd when the boat is at anchor.

Like its predecessor, the engine room of the Swift Trawler 44 is located beneath the saloon amidships. Access is through sole panels that remove completely, giving great access to all sides of the twin diesels, their service points, and the seawater intakes.

Power for the Swift Trawler 44 is a pair of 300-hp Volvo Penta D4 diesels that seem perfectly suited and, in fact, there are no optional engines.

Twin 185-gallon welded aluminum fuel tanks are easily reached, though I didn’t see any inspection ports. These engines push the 44 at 24.8 knots flat out, but I really need to note that this is a very fuel efficient yacht, since it only consumes about 25 gallons per hour, for just less than one nautical mile per gallon. and storage add convenience for serving light meals. The helm console is set on the centerline for excellent views in every direction. A threepanel sliding door makes the opening between the saloon and the aft deck very large, an especially nice feature for those seated in the lounge area immediately to starboard. The general impression is luxurious use of Alpi Mahogany, loads of windows, and neutral fabrics. Mahogany-planked

floors add a contemporary touch. One of the most important changes in the Swift Trawler 44 is the new layout of staterooms and head compartments.

Immediately to port, the guest stateroom, which previously only had bunks, now has a large double. Like all the cabins on this level, it has one stateroom forward has slightly less headroom—only 6-feet, 4-inches—but a much larger double that hinges up to reveal excellent storage and easy access to the bow thruster motor.

One of the many benefits created by offsetting the cabin to port was the addition of more than 27 cubic feet of storage space in the saloon and galley.

Two hanging lockers flank the berth, along with more storage to port. An optional television can hang on the aft bulkhead near the centerline.

Immediately to port, there is an overhead electrical panel just at eye level, hidden by a hinged wood panel that needs a hold-open device. The panel houses the starting switch for an optional genset, all the battery disconnect switches, and wellorganized switches for systems. Just below it is a recess for an optional 22-inch LED television. Opposite, the standard couch converts to a sleeping double with the added bonus that all the bottom cushions fold away under

the mechanism, a system first used on the Swift Trawler 34. And to make this area truly private, there’s a built-in track and screen separating the saloon from the galley and helm.

Beneteau also offers an alternative arrangement that converts the day head to a spacious shower room; an option that undoubtedly will please some experienced cruising couples. l origen del surfing (tabla hawaiana) no está documentado. Según el historiador José Gómez Biamón, hace siglos, se originó en Hawai, siendo una actividad exclusiva para la clase noble en ciertos lugares específicos. Si otro nativo se infiltraba en los lugares reservados para el surfing de la nobleza, éste podía ser decapitado.

Hoy día, el surfing es un deporte o actividad de ocio absolutamente libre y accesible para cualquiera. De modo que la riqueza de las olas tuvo que ser distribuida entre todos por igual, desposeyendo a los nobles de su exclusivo dominio.

A pesar de que muchos comentaristas entienden que el surfing tiene como único propósito la diversión, entre los surfistas existen múltiples propósitos para practicar este deporte. Surfing puede ser terapéutico

para muchos de ellos, retándoles físicamente para mejorar su balance y fortaleza. Otros encuentran paz mental y mejoran su capacidad de concentración.

También, es una disciplina que puede generar mejores relaciones con la naturaleza y los seres con quienes se comparte. Xander Fleming, ilustrado aquí, es un joven que disfruta este deporte con su padre, y siente que ha creado un mejor vínculo con él desde que comenzaron a compartir esta disciplina juntos.

El surfing tiene una dimensión artesanal. Según explica Fleming, la disciplina del surfing incorpora el acto de observar, esperar la ola y luego incorporarse en ésta, para luego utilizar la tabla correctamente para ponerse de pie y deslizarse con su energía. Para esto, es importante tener una tabla que no solamente guarde una consi-

deración estética, sino que se diseñe en base a las dimensiones del cuerpo humano, la naturaleza del agua y el movimiento de las olas. Las mejores tablas son hechas a mano y diseñadas por sus usuarios.

Sin embargo, lo más interesante del surfing es su capacidad transformadora del ser. Todos los surfistas tienen un consenso y concluyen que una vez un ser humano intenta el surfing, su ser se revoluciona y cambia su perspectiva del mundo natural y de su propia persona. Es por estas razones que el surfing en esencia es una revolución pacífica.

Today, surfing is a sport or leisure activity absolutely free and accessible to anyone. Thus, the wealth of the waves had to be distributed amongst all equally, dispossessing the noblemen of their exclusive domain.

Although many commentators understand that surfing is merely a leisure activity, we find that many surfers have multiple purposes to practice this sport.

Surfing may be therapeutic for many of

them, physically challenging them to improve their balance and strength. Others find peace of mind and achieve better mental focus.

Also, it is a discipline that may generate better relationships with nature and others with whom it is shared. Xander Fleming, pictured above, is a one who enjoys this sport with his father, and who feels that he has created a stronger bond with him since they began sharing this discipline together.

Surfing has an artisanal dimension. As Fleming explains, it involves the act of observing, waiting for the wave, in order to incorporate in it, using the surf board correctly to stand up and slide with its energy. based on the human body’s dimensions and the nature of the water and the movement of the waves. The best boards are hand crafted and designed by their users.

Most interestingly, however, is surfing’s capacity to transform us. All surfers are in consensus and conclude that once a human being tries surfing, it revolutionizes and changes one’s perspective of the natural world and the person. It is for these reasons that surfing in essence is a pacific revolution.

ey West en la Florida es una isla en el extremo suroeste de los Cayos de la Florida. De camino al pasar por los puentes es posible detenerse y observar las aguas cristalinas.

Sin embargo, en la industria náutica es conocida por ser la sede del evento de Offshore más importante del mundo, Key West Offshore World Championships. Es un evento que se extiende por toda una semana, celebrado la semana del pasado 3 al 10 de noviembre es sin lugar a dudas de los principales evento de la ciudad.

Para todos los corredores y fanáticos, la mundial es el evento donde todos los botes quieren ir a competir. Las carreras se celebran, miércoles, viernes y domingo y cada día de competencia cuenta con tres carreras para un total de nueve carreras. Las carreras se dividen por categorías compitiendo primero las categorías pequeñas capaces de sobrepasar las 100mph, luego compiten los Superboat y Superboat Extreme, capaces

de pasar las 140mph. Por último los botes Unlimited y Turbine capaces de lograr las 200mph.

El curso es uno muy retante tanto para los equipos como para los pilotos ya que tienen una gran variación de condiciones marítimas a lo largo del curso. Como es un campeonato de tres carreras, gana quien más puntos acumule a través de las tres carreras en sus respectivas categorías.

Un total de 44 embarcaciones distribuidas en 8 distintas categorías estuvieron participando de las carreras.

La competencia llenó las expectativas de todos donde muchas embarcaciones habían establecido riñas incluso entre botes de categorías distintas. Los ganadores por categorías fueron: 113 Miss Geico, 30 Twisted Metal, 96 Spirit of Qatar, 5 WHM Motorsports, 14 Snowy Mountain Brewery, S-29 Talbot Excavating, P323 Black Pearl y P4-44 Crazy Chicken.

Hacer negocios en República Dominicana “está de moda”, según el director ejecutivo de la Oficina del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico en República Dominicana, Efraín Vázquez Vera. El representante puertorriqueño hizo estas declaraciones en una entrevista con la revista digital Metro Puerto Rico, al tiempo que exhortó a los empresarios puertorriqueños a invertir en esta tierra.

La razón: la estabilidad política y económica que actualmente impera en República Dominicana la han convertido en un mercado próspero que permite que el empresario boricua no solo llegue con sus productos y servicios a Dominicana, sino que los exporte a Centroamérica. “El ingreso de Dominicana al DR-CAFTA (Tratado de Libre Comercio entre Estados Unidos, Centroamérica y República Dominicana) ha obligado a la nación a ser más transparente. Además, entre Puerto Rico y República Dominicana existe una condición de libre comercio donde la mayoría de los productos puertorriqueños que pueden entrar a Dominicana no pagan impuesto. Eso es una ventaja bastante competitiva”, señaló.

De acuerdo con el Centro de Exportación e Inversión de República

Dominicana (CEI-RD), los principales sectores de destino de la inversión procedente de Puerto Rico son telecomunicaciones, transporte, minería, construcción, manufactura, energía, turismo, servicios e inmobiliarios. La inversión directa procedente de Puerto Rico y registrada por el Banco Central de la República Dominicana durante el periodo 2003-2012 ascendió a US$ 63.83 millones. “Empresas en tecnología es el tipo de negocio que los dominicanos quieren recibir”, insistió Vázquez Vera, a la vez que afirmó que Puerto Rico es un mercado bien rentable para los empresarios dominicanos.

Migración. La migración de los puertorriqueños ya no solo se está dando hacia Estados Unidos, donde el pasado año más de 60 mil hicieron sus maletas, los boricuas también se están estableciendo en República Dominicana. El principal destino para vacacionar de los puertorriqueños en Latinoamérica se está convirtiendo ahora en una opción para migrar.

Las estadísticas así lo señalan y, aunque la primera Encuesta Nacional de Inmigrantes (ENI-2012) de República Dominicana contó a unos 4,416 boricuas residiendo en Quisqueya, la realidad es que la cifra supera los 20,000

De acuerdo con Román, el menor costo de vida, la similitud en el clima y el mismo idioma son las principales razones que mencionan los puertorriqueños para establecerse en Dominicana. Asegura que en el país hay muchos boricuas estudiando medicina y abogacía, así como trabajadores de empresas puertorriqueñas aquí establecidas. Pero el perfil más común del puertorriqueño que se radica en Quisqueya es de la tercera edad, retirados que viven del seguro social, aseguró Román: “Hay personas que también han contraído matrimonio con dominicanos, tanto mujeres como hombres, pero mayoritariamente son personas de la tercera edad”.

Bayahibe – Punta Cana. La playa La Laguna Dominicus (en la zona hotelera de Bayahibe) y la playa Cabeza de Toro Be Live Punta Cana han renovado su certificación internacional Bandera Azul para el periodo 20132014. Las nuevas banderas fueron izadas el 5 de diciembre.

En la playa La Laguna Dominicus la distinción se extiende desde las puertas del Parque Nacional del Este, donde se encuentran las instalaciones del hotel Be Live Canoa, cruzando el Catalonia Gran Dominicus, Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus y la playa pública de Dominicus, hasta los hoteles Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace y Beach. La playa Cabeza de Toro Be Live Grand Punta Cana ha recibido el galardón por tercer año consecutivo.

El Jurado Internacional del programa Bandera Azul realiza un riguroso proceso de evaluación de cada playa, asegurándose que cumpla con los exigentes requisitos ambientales. La Bandera Azul garantiza que la playa es limpia, segura y que constantemente se controla la calidad de sus aguas y servicios. “La certificación Bandera Azul 2013-2014 –anota el Jurado– reafirma el compromiso del operador con el manejo ambiental responsable de la zona costera y marina; lo exhorta a continuar con la implementación de buenas prácticas ambientales, así

como a promover la educación ambiental entre los usuarios de la playa”. “El mantenimiento de la certificación Bandera Azul dependerá del cumplimiento permanente de todos los criterios del programa durante el periodo de certificación”.

La playa La Laguna Dominicus de Bayahibe puede jactarse de haber izado, en 2004, la primera Bandera Azul del continente americano. Desde entonces, muchas otras playas dominicanas han obtenido este galardón ecológico que resulta muy atractivo para los turistas. M

uchos son los destinos que se caracterizan por promocionarse como lugares de aventura, Venezuela no era uno que estuviera en mi mente en esa categoría hasta tener la oportunidad de visitarlo.

El país cuenta con una diversidad de ser multi destino de aventuras. La primera experiencia fue en Nueva Esparta, en donde se encuentra la Isla de Margarita, reconocida por sus espectaculares playas, clima y variedad de lugares turísticos como lo es el fuerte de Juan Griego.

Se puede tomar un catamarán y disfrutar de las pequeñas Islas, Coche y Cabagua que te enamoran por los espectaculares paisajes y aguas cristalinas. Otro de los lugares que puede visitarlo el estado de Barinas en donde en una inusual travesía llegas al campamento Colibrí, unas cabañas que albergan huéspedes y le ofrecen una aventura de navegación por el río en balsas “rafting”, una experiencia realmente inolvidable. El destino final fue Mérida, donde se pude tener la experiencia de visitar los pueblos del sur y conocer un modelo de posadas y cooperativas de comunidades trabajando para desarrollar el turismo de la región.

El lugar también cuenta con un área llamada Tierra Negra, unas montañas majestuosas donde practican el deportes de parapente, deporte extremos en donde disfrutas del paradisiaco paisaje.

En fin, Venezuela cuenta con un sinnúmero de lugares para disfrutar un viaje repleto de aventuras chéveres.

La excursión fue gracias a una invitación de parte del ministerio de Turismo de Venezuela como parte de su Feria Internacional de Turismo.

any destinations are characterized by their self-promotion as adventure sites. Venezuela did not strike me as being one of those sites until I had the opportunity to visit it. The country has the diversity for being a multi-adventurous site.

My first experience was in the state of Nueva Esparta, where you can find Margarita Island, known for its spectacular beaches, climate, and diverse tourist attractions, such as the Juan Griego Fort. There one can also take a catamaran and enjoy the small Islands of Coche and Cubagua, which you will love for the spectacular scenery and crystalline waters.

Another place I was able to visit what was the state of Barinas where, on an unusual journey, we reached the Colibrí camp, that are cabins to house guests and they offer a river-rafting adventure, a truly unforgettable experience. My final destination was Mérida, where I visited towns to the south and saw a model of inns and cooperative communities working to develop tourism in their region. This site

also boasts a site called Tierra Negra, which consists of majestic mountains where one can practice the extreme sport of paragliding while enjoying a heavenly landscape. In sum, Venezuela has numerous places to enjoy a world full of nifty adventures. The tour was thanks to an invitation from the Ministry of Tourism of Venezuela as part of the International Tourism Fair.

omo vimos en nuestra sección anterior, los corales, a pesar de su apariencia, son organismos frágiles.

Su protección exterior es suficiente para proteger a los pólipos de amenazas bajo agua, pero no es suficientemente fuerte para resistir anclas de botes o personas parándose encima de ellos. Pero esos no son los únicos peligros para los corales. Hay otras amenazas aún más peligrosas.

Hoy día, todo el mundo ha escuchado sobre el fenómeno del blanqueamiento de los corales. La pérdida de color en los corales es uno de los indicadores más visibles de que los arrecifes están en problemas, pero, ¿qué causa este fenómeno? El color de los corales proviene del alga Zooxantella que vive en relación simbiótica con el pólipo de coral. Si se fijan bien, la gran mayoría de los corales duros son de color marrón, aunque hay unos pocos que tiene colores anaranjado, verde o amarillo. Cuando el coral se encuentra bajo estrés, no puede mantener control sobre la zooxantella y termina expulsándola, causando el blanqueamiento. ¿Qué puede causar estrés en el coral?

Existen varias causas. La causa principal del blanqueamiento es el aumento (y en algunos casos la disminución) en la temperatura del agua de mar. Cambios tan pequeños como 1 grado centígrado por encima de la temperatura normal de la zona es suficiente para causar que el coral expulse a la Zooxantella. De hecho, la mayor parte de los ejemplos de blanqueamiento masivos ya documenta-

dos a través del mundo han ocurrido cuando ha aumentado la temperatura del mar.

Pero el cambio de temperatura no es la única causa del blanqueamiento. Otras causas incluyen la disminución en el nivel de plankton en el agua (causada por la pesca excesiva en una zona), el aumento en la sedimentación del agua (causada por la contaminación), cambios en el nivel de acidez o salinidad del agua, herbicidas, infecciones bacterianas, la pesca con cianuro (usado en la captura de peces exóticos para el negocio de los acuarios), y la irradiación solar, entre otros. En términos del efecto que podemos tener nosotros como individuos, el uso de bloqueador solar cuando nadamos o entramos al agua puede cambiar la composición del agua lo suficiente para afectar a los corales. s we saw in our previous section on corals, despite their sturdy appearance, they are actually quite fragile. Their exterior shell provides the polyps enough protection against marine threats but is not strong enough the withstand boat anchors or people standing on top of them. But these aren’t the only dangers faced by corals; there are others, even more dangerous.

Almost everyone nowadays has heard about the coral bleaching phenomenon.

The loss of color by the corals is one of the most visible indicators that reefs are in trouble. But what causes this phenomenon? The colors in coral are a result of the polyps’ symbiotic relationship with the algae Zooxanthella. If you look closely, most corals are brown in color, although there are a few that can be green, orange or yellow in color. When

the coral is under stress, it cannot control the Zooxanthellae and it ends up expelling the algae, causing the coral to lose its color.

What can cause stress in corals?

There are many causes. The main reason why corals bleach is the rise (and in some cases a decrease) in sea water temperatures. A change of as little as 1 degree Centigrade in water temperature above normal can make the coral expel the Zooxanthellae. In fact, most of the mass bleaching events that have been documented throughout the world have been linked to higher sea temperatures.

But changing water temperatures is not the only cause of coral bleaching. Other causes include the decrease in the levels of Zooplankton in the water (caused by over fishing in certain areas), an increase in sedimentation in the water (caused by contamination and run-off from land),

changes in the acidity or salinity of the water, herbicides, bacterial infections, Cyanide fishing (used to capture exotic fish for the aquarium business), and solar irradiation, among others. In terms of the effects that we as individuals can have, the use of sun block when we go into the water can change the composition of the water enough to cause bleaching.

If we combine all of these effects with the slow growth rate of corals and the way the corals reproduce, we can understand why they are at such high risk.

The corals cannot reproduce fast enough to counteract the loss of individual coral colonies.

In our last section on corals, we’ll see how corals reproduce and see why it’s not as easy to replace what has already been lost.

omo degustar los más deliciosos manjares del Caribe y el Mediterráneo en una cabaña de madera rodeada por la belleza del campo y decorada en su interior al más exquisito estilo moderno, así de placentero es el ambiente en Zafra del Caribe, un hermoso restaurante ubicado en la carretera P.R. 189 km 5.3, en Gurabo.

A nuestra llegada nos recibió uno de sus propietarios, José Daniel Díaz, quien al igual que su personal nos hicieron sentir como en casa con su excelente trato y servicio al cliente. Inmediatamente el rico aroma de los platos que salían de la cocina captó nuestra atención y pedimos el menú. Algunos de sus platos más destacados son: paella de mariscos, risotto francés de langosta, champagne, chalotas y el filete mignon, 100 por ciento angus en salsa de setas y vino tinto.

“No tenemos playa pero sí el mejor pescado”, fueron las palabras del propietario de lo que por 25 años fue conocido como la Hacienda El Josco y desde hace cinco años es Zafra del Caribe, que además de ser un recurrido restaurante, cuenta con tres salones de actividades con capacidad para 300, 100 y 40 personas.

El pescado es fresco, basta con probarlo para dar fe de ello. Por

tal razón, algunos de los platos más pedidos por la clientela son el mero Barcelona, la langosta a la parrilla y el volcán de camarones.

“Nuestra primera opción siempre es el mercado local en cuanto a productos nacionales y el pescado”, expresó José Daniel.

Lo particular de este restaurante es que no tiene un chef principal, sino una persona que está a cargo del grupo de profesionales que labora en la cocina. Cada miembro del grupo de expertos en el arte culinario debe preparar un plato diferente cada semana.

“Queremos que el éxito del restaurante no dependa de una persona, sino de la calidad del grupo de profesionales. Es por ello que el menú especial cambia semanalmente y bajo cada nuevo plato está el nombre de su creador”, explicó José Daniel, quien junto a su hermano José Javier han logrado posicionar a Zafra del Caribe como uno de los mejores restaurantes en el área metropolitana.

Sin duda alguna, hay que darse la vuelta por este exquisito y rústico restaurante que ubica en lo que hace algunas décadas atrás fuera el punto de encuentro entre los camiones que venía de la finca recolectando caña para subirla al tren que la repartía a la central Santa Juana de Caguas.

“En la parte posterior del restaurante mantenemos la casa del mayordomo de la finca que está en proceso de restauración y todavía se conservan parte de las vías del tren. De ahí el nombre de Zafra del Caribe” , finalizó el propietario.

El restaurante abre sus puertas al público de martes a domingos de 11:00am a 8:00pm y viernes y sábados están abiertos hasta las 10:00pm. En el exterior del restaurante hay una terraza donde se puede disfrutar de tapas y vinos.

ARAÑITAS DE

VIANDAS

1 taza de plátano rallado 1 taza de malanga rallada 1 taza de yautía lila rallada 1 ½ taza de aceite de canola o vegetal Sal a gusto

PROCEDIMIENTO: • Mezcle las tres viandas en un envase utilizando un tenedor sin presionar mucho.

• Forme montañitas de la mezcla en una bandeja.

• Caliente el aceite en una cacerola o sartén hondo a fuego mediano alto y fría por aproximadamente 8 minutos hasta que estén doradas y crujientes.

• Retire del aceite caliente coloque y las arañitas sobre una bandeja con papel absorbente y sazone a gusto con sal.

“Tips” Mantenga la temperatura de su aceite a 350 grados aproximadamente. Si el aceite comienza a humear, retírelo del fuego y deje que baje la temperatura. Al colocar las arañitas en el aceite debe notar un burbujeo ligeramente rápido.

CAMARONES EN SALSA DE COCO Y MAÍZ

1 ½ libra de camarones crudos 1 taza de leche de coco ½ taza de maíz 1 cucharada de sofrito oriental (partes iguales de ajo, jengibre y cebollines) ¼ taza de vino blanco 2 cucharadas de cilantro fresco cortado finamente 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva Sal y pimienta a gusto PROCEDIMIENTO: • C aliente el aceite de oliva en una sartén y selle los camarones 1 minutos por ambos lado.

• C uando los camarones tengan color por ambos lados, retírelos inmediatamente y resérvelos.

• E n la misma sartén, sofría el sofrito oriental por un minuto y agregue el maíz. Continúe sofriendo por 1 minuto más a fuego mediano alto.

• A gregue el vino blanco, hierva hasta que se haya reducido a la mitad y agregue la leche de coco. Hierva la preparación por 8 minutos aproximadamente.

• R egrese los camarones a la preparación y continúe hirviéndolos por 2 minutos adicionales. Añádale el cilantro.

• P ruebe y sazone a gusto con sal y pimienta.

pietarios. Dicha sangría viene en cuatro deliciosos sabores: parcha, acerola, tinta y blanca.

De igual forma, los precios son accesibles para todo público lo que les ha permitido a sus propietarios acaparar el mercado y posicionarse entre uno de los restaurantes más frecuentados en La Parguera. En cuanto al cuidado facial, tú PRIMER PASO será visitarnos para orientarte, conocer tú tipo de piel, para poder saber el producto y los tratamientos que necesitas, el escogido es bien importante ya que de eso dependerán los beneficios que obtendrá tú piel.

Quiero ir orientándote en cuanto a los pasos básicos y el orden en tú nueva rutina de belleza:

antes de tiempo. Cuando abras el producto, retira lo que vayas utilizar y luego vuelve a taparlo. Nunca entres los dedos en el, siempre utiliza una espátula y evita los cambios bruscos de temperatura.

urante el pasado fin de semana se llevó a cabo el Cataño Offshore Grand Prix, con la carrera el domingo 8, siendo esta el cierre del campeonato de circuitos Grand Prix del 2013, de la Puerto Rico Offshore Series Inc. El mismo se llevó a cabo como parte de las atracciones de la Feria Para Ti, que el municipio de Cataño celebró en su quinta edición.

A pesar de que las adversas condiciones del tiempo, con vientos de sobre 20 nudos y olas dentro de la bahía de 4-6, se pudo llevar a cabo un excelente evento, lleno de mu-

cha competitividad y un total de 12 embarcaciones. Los pilotos y naves dieron el máximo bajo unas circunstancias un poco difíciles por las inclemencias del clima.

El ganador overall del evento lo fue Unlimited Marine, quien presentó una dura batalla con el nuevo catamarán de 40 pies de Wally Castro Marine, el cual mantenía el primer lugar hasta la última vuelta, donde finalmente se pudo imponer Unlimited.

Una revitalizada Jaws 24, Joymaris, se apoderó del primer lugar de la categoría D, la más competida con cinco embarcaciones. El cambio de

ast weekend took place the Cataño Offshore Grand Prix, event that closed the 2013 Grand Prix Circuits of the PR Offshore Series Inc. The event took place as a main attraction of the fifth edition of La Feria Para Ti organized by the Cataño Municipality.

Despite severe weather conditions inside the Bay, with heavy rains, 20 knots win and 4 to 6 feet waves, a very successful event took place with 12 boats on an aggressive competition. Boats and crews perform at their best, under diffi-

cult circumstances, caused by a variable weather.

The overall winner, Unlimited Marine showcase an aggressive competition with the Wally Castro Marine new to the circuit 40 feet Catamaran, that maintained the first place until the last lap, when finally Unlimited Marine overtook the first place of the C -category and the event as a whole.

A revitalized Jaws 24, Joymaris secured the first place in the D category, the one with more competition with 5 boats. The

re powering from outboard engines to one single inboard was very favorable performing an excellent race. It was followed very closely by Amsoil/X Tree Pantera that faced mechanical problems on the first lap, being able to re enter race and securing second place, follow by Velociraptor, Storm and Thunder II. Landy power transport continued with is first place on Category F, with Villa marina/GMS winning the S Category and Arrhythmia/Villa Marina securing first place on A category.

two close rivals and walked away with the title literally at the very last second.

anny Ching and Lina Augaitis have taken out the 2013 Paddle Royal in Puerto Rico after an incredibly tight second day of racing.

Danny claimed the overall victory by winning the final round of racing on Day Two, ending the hopes that both Aussie young gun Jake Jensen and Frenchman Eric Terrien had of flying home with the $7,000 winner’s prize.

Danny had all the work to do after finishing third in yesterday’s Long Distance Race and left it until the very end to fight his way back into the lead. Coming into the final round of racing, which consisted of a 200m straight-line sprint, Danny was sitting third on the overall points leaderboard, one point behind Eric and two behind Jake. The reigning champ basically had to win the last race and hope Jake didn’t get second. And, as if the script had been written, that’s exactly what happened as the event finished in very exciting fashion. Danny leapfrogged his

Danny and Jake were actually tied on top of the leaderboard at the end of the weekend (10 points each), however Danny won on a “Who had the most first places?” count-back (2x race victories to Jake’s 1x). The top three guys – Danny, Jake and Eric – were the clear standouts this event. As you can see from the leaderboard points they all finished well clear of the pack.

Speaking of the pack, it was an amazing turnaround from Slater Trout, who finished outside the Top 10 in yesterday’s Distance Race only to come charging home and take 4th place overall with a string of strong results in the Course and Sprint Races (including a victory in the second Course Race).

Slater finished just ahead of Chase Kosterlitz (5th overall), who in turn edged out Chuck Glynn (6th overall) and Ryan Helm (7th overall) with a strong final race.

Lina Augaitis all the way, with the Canadian too strong for Brandi Baksic (2nd overall), while Gail Vento battled past Helga Goebel to take the final podium spot. Lina showed she will be one to watch next year, taking out not only yesterday’s Distance Race but also all but one of today’s shorter course races.

PREMIACIÓN CAMPEONATO GRAND PRIX 2013 El pasado sábado, 18 de enero de 2014 la Puerto Rico Offshore Series celebró su pasadía familiar de Octavitas y aprovecharon la ocasión para cerrar con broche de oro todos los trabajos realizados el pasado año con la Premiación Campeonato Grand Prix del 2013. La misma se llevó a cabo en Paraíso Boat Park en la Croabas, Fajardo. Hubo música en vivo, refrigerios y un almuerzo con todos los sabores que acostumbramos degustar en esta época que ha finalizado.
