NAVC DISCOVERY: BUFFALO Modeled after the NAVC Institute, NAVC Discovery: Buffalo is a handson veterinary event that will hone practitioners’ skills in a stimulating setting alongside other motivated professionals. The inaugural destination event will take place in Buffalo, New York, at the Marriott Harborcenter in conjunction with Daemen College from July 29 through August 3, 2017. Three in-depth courses will be offered between the two locations, including Soft Tissue Surgery, Small Animal Ultrasound and Fear Free℠. The state-of-the-art surgery and ultrasound courses will be held at Daemen College and will include hands-on lab components, while the Fear Free offering will take place at the Marriott Harborcenter for classroomstyle learning and discussion. The city of Buffalo boasts breathtaking attractions like Niagara Falls, a quaint downtown district and delicious cuisine. Set in the summertime in upstate New York, the event gives attendees the opportunity to explore the Buffalo area and visit Niagara Falls when not in the classroom.

TODAY’S VETERINARY PRACTICE CELEBRATES 5 YEARS Today’s Veterinary Practice (TVP), NAVC’s official peer-reviewed journal for veterinarians, is celebrating its 5th year of serving veterinary practitioners. TVP has hit some major milestones during that time, and it is now a leader in providing in-depth articles that address the newest information on treatment, surgical skills and ongoing issues like infectious diseases and heartworm prevention. Here are just a few things you might want to know about TVP in 2017…

Dr. Simon Platt named Editor in Chief In June 2016, the TVP staff paid their respects to Editor-in-Chief Dr. Lesley King. Dr. King had a huge and enduring impact on what TVP is and what it offers the veterinary industry, and her passing came as a great loss to the NAVC staff and the veterinary community as a whole. After an extensive search, this past summer TVP announced Simon R. Platt, BVM&S, MRCVS, DACVIM (Neurology), DECVN, as its new Editor in Chief. Dr. Platt is a professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. His research interests include ischemic disease of the central nervous system, canine brain tumors and epilepsy. “It’s an honor and challenge to follow in the footsteps of such an influential and important veterinary mind of our time,” said Dr. Platt. “I’d like to keep the standard of the extremely practical and educational articles as high as it’s been before I became involved, working with the editorial team to raise the visibility of this journal

so that it becomes a go-to reference for many vets in small animal practice.” The TVP Symposium Yesterday, TVP presented its second annual symposium track at the NAVC Conference 2017: Diagnosis and Management of the Acute Abdomen. Organized by Dr. Platt and NAVC Executive Vice President of Veterinary Education Matt Winter, DVM, DACVR, the symposium included interactive lectures, case-based Q&A sessions and roundtable discussion. As with all TVP endeavors, the focus was practical clinical information that attendees could take home and use immediately to give patients the highest-quality care. A brand-new look Dr. Platt and the rest of the TVP staff are passionate about making the journal a must-have resource for both its print and online audiences. So it only made sense to give the journal an engaging, modern facelift to make the content even more reader-friendly. The Neill P. Overman Award demonstrates the NAVC’s commitment to providing the ultimate exhibit experience to our Conference attendees. This award is presented in honor of Neill P. Overman, the NAVC’s Emeritus Past Director of Exhibits, founder of Veterinary Learning Systems and one of the founders of the Eastern States Veterinary Association, Inc., the forerunner of the NAVC. Suzan was nominated by Michael Albo, Vice President of Communications & Customer Service at Virbac Corporation. Today’s Veterinary Technician, a bimonthly publication free to veterinary professionals, has spent the past year providing insight, knowledge, tips and motivation about what it means to fill the role of a veterinary technician. The journal has exceeded its goal of subscription requests, and the positive feedback on its Facebook page has been overwhelming. Lynne Johnson-Harris, Editor in Chief of Today’s Veterinary Technician, said she’s thrilled that the journal has been such a success. “Our goal was to provide quality scientific printed and digital CE-eligible content written by veterinary technicians. I believe we have succeeded in reaching that goal,” said Johnson-Harris. “We have high-quality, peer-reviewed articles for all members of the veterinary healthcare team.” “The response from readers has been overwhelmingly positive,” Robin Henry, Executive Editor of NAVC Publications, said. “I’m excited that we regularly get veterinary technicians asking us if they can write for the journal. DARIUS RUCKER BRINGS YOU SOUTHERN STYLE TONIGHT!

Get ready to have a good time with country music artist Darius Rucker. In fact, it’s right there in the title of Darius Rucker’s latest album— Southern Style. “To me, the South means a laid-back lifestyle, beaches, family and being able to have a good time when you want to,” says Rucker. “In Charleston, where I’m from, nobody’s in a rush to get anywhere. And there’s a mentality that there’s room for everybody. “So with these songs, I wanted to bring out the way I live, the way my friends live, and all the things that are important to us.” Rucker’s fourth solo album as a country artist reveals a sound and a spirit that bring him closer than ever to the genre’s fundamentals. From “Homegrown Honey,” featuring a country-girl-gone-uptown, to the back-porch party in “Dixie Cup,” his newest songs are filled with the instruments and images that define a region and its musical traditions. Darius Rucker first attained multi-platinum status as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish. Since re-introducing himself to the world as a country artist, his musical life has had a truly remarkable second act. In 2008, he released Learn to Live; the album’s first single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” made him the first African-American with a number-one country song since Charley Pride in 1983. His 2010 follow-up, Charleston, SC 1966, included 2 more number ones, while True Believers contained another 4 hit singles. He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2012 and won the GRAMMY Award for Best Country Solo Performance for his triumphant version of “Wagon Wheel.”

Meet Derby and Winston, the pets behind Thomas Bohn, CEO of NAVC. “Our golden retriever Derby came into our family during our son’s Air Bud obsession,” said Bohn. “He can’t play basketball, but he is definitely our son’s buddy. We brought our Old English sheepdog Winston home so Derby could have a friend. I’m not sure he appreciated the gesture as much as we hoped he would!” Did you have pets before Derby and Winston? I grew up with an English springer spaniel who had an amazing ability to get into everything, including six pounds of raw chicken cutlets on Christmas morning. Somehow Winston has tapped into his spirit and has Houdini-like abilities. We’re a dog family — we had a sweet Dalmatian for 15 great years. How old are your pets today, and how old were they when they joined your pack? Our dogs are 7 and 8, and we got them both around 5 months old. Explain your pets’ names. Derby’s name came from The Kentucky Derby — which was on the same day we brought him home. Winston is from Winston Churchill, and he too is irascible, stubborn and has a huge personality. Describe your relationship with your pets and what they bring to your life. Life is better with pets, especially dogs! They make most stressful things melt away just by being themselves. Our dogs are truly an extension of the family. We speak to them, we include them in everything and we treat them with as much, maybe even more respect than other people. If Derby and Winston could talk, what would they say? They don’t need to talk. They both rule this house like a boss by just being absolute characters! I think if they spoke they would lose some of their power! Since you can talk, what are your favorite things that you enjoy about Derby and Winston? They bring happiness to our house everyday as well as chaos and love and energy. We couldn’t imagine life without them. Do you bring them to work? Derby is able to go. He gets along with all dogs. Winston is a little, let’s say, eager to show that he’s the boss of everything! What are their favorite treats? Winston is now to trying to sneak a sip of my Starbucks! Anything else you’d like to add? We just put in a pool after all these years, and my wife thinks I did it for the dogs to exercise more as they get older...she’s kinda right!

NAVC’s new marketing awards honor the best of the best in animal health marketing initiatives of 2016

Discover the winners of the first and only animal health marketing awards dedicated solely to celebrating North America’s animal health advertising, promotion and education efforts in the special exhibition located in the OCCC West D Lobby. Dubbed The VETTYs, the awards are the first of their kind to recognize the marketing initiatives of companies, associations and universities promoting products that are sold to veterinarians or through veterinary practices. Initiatives considered for The VETTYs may include, but are not limited to, creative print ads, commercials, videos, promotions, digital marketing, social media campaigns, tradeshow booths and activations, sales materials and clinic merchandise. “For more than 30 years, the NAVC has been witness to the increasing sophistication and creativity of veterinary advertising and marketing,” said Pete Scott, NAVC Vice President of Industry Services and International Relations. “We want to create an animal healthcare award that recognizes the accomplishments and efforts of agencies and companies on an annual basis.” This year’s competition featured separate divisions for professional entities, which include for-profit corporate services and manufacturers, and institutional entities, which include nonprofit associations and universities. Judged by a panel of animal health industry and marketing experts, entrants were eligible for gold, silver and bronze awards, as well as several “Judges Awards” and “Best of Show” honors. INDICATIONS: For use in dogs to prevent canine heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Diroﬁlaria immitis) for a month (30 days) after infection and for the treatment and control of ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma braziliense). HEARTGARD Plus is recommended for dogs 6 weeks of age and older. For dogs over 100 lb use the appropriate combination of these chewables. ADMINISTRATION: Remove only one chewable at a time from the foil-backed blister card. Return the card with the remaining chewables to its box to protect the product from light. Because most dogs find HEARTGARD Plus palatable, the product can be offered to the dog by hand. Alternatively, it may be added intact to a small amount of dog food.The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes after administration to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or rejected. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost, redosing is recommended. HEARTGARD Plus should be given at monthly intervals during the period of the year when mosquitoes (vectors), potentially carrying infective heartworm larvae, are active. The initial dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s first exposure to mosquitoes. The final dose must be given within a month (30 days) after the dog’s last exposure to mosquitoes. When replacing another heartworm preventive product in a heartworm disease preventive program, the first dose of HEARTGARD Plus must be given within a month (30 days) of the last dose of the former medication. If the interval between doses exceeds a month (30 days), the efficacy of ivermectin can be reduced. Therefore, for optimal performance, the chewable must be given once a month on or about the same day of the month. If treatment is delayed, whether by a few days or many, immediate treatment with HEARTGARD Plus and resumption of the recommended dosing regimen will minimize the opportunity for the development of adult heartworms. Monthly treatment with HEARTGARD Plus also provides effective treatment and control of ascarids (T. canis, T. leonina) and hookworms (A. caninum, U. stenocephala, A. braziliense). Clients should be advised of measures to be taken to prevent reinfection with intestinal parasites. EFFICACY: HEARTGARD Plus Chewables, given orally using the recommended dose and regimen, are effective against the tissue larval stage of D.immitis for a month (30 days) after infection and, as a result, prevent the development of the adult stage. HEARTGARD Plus Chewables are also effective against canine ascarids (T. canis, T. leonina) and hookworms (A. caninum, U. stenocephala, A. braziliense). ACCEPTABILITY: In acceptability and field trials, HEARTGARD Plus was shown to be an acceptable oral dosage form that was consumed at first offering by the majority of dogs. PRECAUTIONS: All dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with HEARTGARD Plus which is not effective against adult D. immitis. Infected dogs must be treated to remove adult heartworms and microfilariae before initiating a program with HEARTGARD Plus. While some microfilariae may be killed by the ivermectin in HEARTGARD Plus at the recommended dose level, HEARTGARD Plus is not effective for microfilariae clearance. A mild hypersensitivity-type reaction, presumably due to dead or dying microfilariae and particularly involving a transient diarrhea, has been observed in clinical trials with ivermectin alone after treatment of some dogs that have circulating microfilariae. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion by humans, clients should be advised to contact a physician immediately. Physicians may contact a Poison Control Center for advice concerning cases of ingestion by humans. Store between 68°F - 77°F (20°C - 25°C). Excursions between 59°F - 86°F (15°C - 30°C) are permitted. Protect product from light. ADVERSE REACTIONS: In clinical field trials with HEARTGARD Plus, vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours of dosing was rarely observed (1.1% of administered doses). The following adverse reactions have been reported following the use of HEARTGARD: Depression/lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, mydriasis, ataxia, staggering, convulsions and hypersalivation. SAFETY: HEARTGARD Plus has been shown to be bioequivalent to HEARTGARD, with respect to the bioavailability of ivermectin. The dose regimens of HEARTGARD Plus and HEARTGARD are the same with regard to ivermectin (6 mcg/kg). Studies with ivermectin indicate that certain dogs of the Collie breed are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels (more than 16 times the target use level) than dogs of other breeds. At elevated doses, sensitive dogs showed adverse reactions which included mydriasis, depression, ataxia, tremors, drooling, paresis, recumbency, excitability, stupor, coma and death. HEARTGARD demonstrated no signs of toxicity at 10 times the recommended dose (60 mcg/kg) in sensitive Collies. Results of these trials and bioequivalency studies, support the safety of HEARTGARD products in dogs, including Collies, when used as recommended. HEARTGARD Plus has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs, including pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies aged 6 or more weeks. In clinical trials, many commonly used flea collars, dips, shampoos, anthelmintics, antibiotics, vaccines and steroid preparations have been administered with HEARTGARD Plus in a heartworm disease prevention program. In one trial, where some pups had parvovirus, there was a marginal reduction in efficacy against intestinal nematodes, possibly due to a change in intestinal transit time. There are wellness issues that go across lines of all veterinary professionals and veterinary students, and then there are those that are unique to certain populations within veterinary medicine. That’s the reason Mike Chaddock, DVM, EML, presented “LGBT Wellness: Not the Same as for Our Straight Brothers & Sisters” yesterday in the Learning Theater. Dr. Chaddock is the VicePresident of the Lesbian and Gay Veterinary Medical Association (LGVMA) and Associate Dean for Administration for Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. “Only by understanding these differences will the veterinary profession be able to develop meaningful surveys for the LGBT veterinary population and also obtain appropriate and needed wellness data for developing effective preventive programs,” said Dr. Chaddock. Study data shows that members of the veterinary profession and veterinary students include about 4% to 7% LGBT individuals. Dr. Chaddock’s presentation dove into the differences of health and wellness issues between the LGBT and non-LGBT communities, and why these differences exist. The presentation also included a discussion of the preliminary results of a 2016 survey conducted by LGVMA and Auburn University. A peer-reviewed paper on these results is planned. LGVMA would like to invite attendees to its networking reception sponsored by Merial on Tuesday, February 7, at 6:30 pm in Orange Ballroom A. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) invite you to an update on the Fix the Debt Initiative! Life’s not a motion picture, and veterinary students can’t edit out the accumulation of student debt by leaving their college years on the cutting-room floor. But when dozens of organizations and 100 volunteers come together with a common cause and mission, we can all certainly try to rewrite the script. That’s exactly what the AVMA and the AAVMC are attempting to do through the collaborative Fix the Debt Initiative, which emerged from the Fix the Debt Summit held in April 2016, hosted by Michigan State University and co-sponsored by the AVMA and AAVMC. Today’s session will provide updates on the work that is being done as part of the ongoing initiative. INSIDE THE NAVC & BANFIELD PET HOSPITAL® COLLABORATE ON GROUNDBREAKING REPORT The NAVC and Banfield Pet Hospital are pleased to share the first annual Banfield Veterinary Emerging Topics (VET) Report. Banfield has always been dedicated to using its extensive data to provide insights to the profession on topics that can improve veterinary care for pets. This first annual VET Report, supported by the collaborative educational efforts of the NAVC, focuses on a critical topic: antimicrobial resistance. It is titled “Are We Doing Our Part to Prevent Superbugs? Antimicrobial Usage Patterns Among Companion Animal Veterinarians.” “We are proud to team up with the NAVC on the 2017 VET Report to raise awareness about the critical topic of antimicrobial resistance in companion animal practice and how veterinarians can address it in their own practices,” said Dr. Karen Faunt, Vice President of Medical Quality Advancement at Banfield Pet Hospital. “I am excited to be presenting our VET Report CE alongside some of the foremost experts on the topic and sharing this information with the profession in person at our Tuesday afternoon sessions.” The report includes Banfield Pet Hospital data from 926 general practice hospitals in 43 states, with approximately 135,000 dog visits each week and a provider base of 3,850 veterinarians. Data on urinary tract infection and respiratory tract infection were extracted and evaluated. Drs. Mike Lappin and Jane Sykes, both members of the International Society for Companion Animal

Infectious Disease (ISCAID) Antimicrobial Working Group, will be presenting antimicrobial usage guidelines and clinical management tips for respiratory tract and urinary tract infections as part of the VET Report educational programming.
