“We felt it was time to allow both the NAVC and the conference to have their own, yet connected identities. We are excited about all of the opportunities that this name change will provide us for future conferences, ensuring that we continue to evolve our offerings to the industry’s needs,” Tom Bohn said.

THE NAVC BECOMES THE LARGEST PUBLISHER IN THE INDUSTRY In January, the NAVC Publishing division welcomed Veterinary Advantage to the fold, making the Companion, Equine and Livestock editions of Vet-Advantage the newest additions to the NAVC’s family of official publications. This acquisition positions the NAVC as the largest publisher in the veterinary industry.

MORNING STAR: ROBIN ROBERTS AT THE GENERAL SESSION The NAVC Conference 2017 got off to a great start yesterday morning with Opening Ceremony keynote speaker Robin Roberts, who has been co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) since 2005. She shared her inspirational journey as a kid growing up in Mississippi, her dreams of becoming a sports journalist and attending college as a student athlete majoring in communications.

After getting an early start on country radio as a sports director, and subsequent moves to Nashville and Atlanta, the pivotal point in her career came when she accepted a position with the leader in sports media: ESPN. Her message was simple— when you eliminate boundaries and accept opportunities outside your comfort zone, you position yourself for great things to come.

In 2007, after arriving at the anchor desk of GMA, Roberts found herself facing a new type of challenge - she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Five years later, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome and underwent a bone marrow transplant. In her latest memoir Everybody’s Got Something, Roberts tells the amazing story of her courageous battle against a life-threatening illness, the life lessons she continues to learn and her inspiring return to the GMA anchor desk.

The messages in her keynote were simple but strong: First, proximity is power—you must place yourself in the right position and maintain focus to find the success you wish for in life. Second, dream big, but focus small. And third, in the words of her mother, “Make your mess your message.”

The leadership for the NAVC hopes to make VMX the preeminent event for the veterinary industry each year. This new name was created to distinguish the conference from the NAVC organization, as the NAVC has grown to encompass so much more than just the conference.

More than 7,000 cases of rabies in animals are reported annually to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several human exposures occur nearly every month. In 2015, two human rabies deaths were reported, one in Missouri and one in Wyoming.

Because rabies is fatal if not treated promptly after exposure, colleges of veterinary medicine require pre-exposure vaccination for students. However, after graduation, many animal health professionals do not take the time to check their titer to ensure a continuing level of immunity. Data from the Kansas State Rabies Laboratory indicate that 10% to 30% of veterinary students have rabies antibody levels below 0.5 IU/mL and 2% to 8% have undetectable levels two years after their pre-exposure series. At this time, pre-exposure vaccination is not required for veterinary technician students.

INSIDE PRESIDENTIAL WELCOME: MELINDA MERCK Welcome to the inaugural NAVC Conference in our new home at the wonderful Orange County Convention Center!

These are exciting times for the Conference and NAVC as an organization. It has been an immense honor to serve as President during such an eventful year. I want to thank my fellow board members who are extraordinary in their vision, commitment and leadership. I also want to thank Tom Bohn and the rest of the NAVC staff, volunteers, industry partners, sponsors and everyone involved in making this tremendous event happen.

Veterinary medicine was almost a non-starter for me. I was told in high school that I could not be a veterinarian because I was female.

Thankfully, I had a father who didn’t believe in glass ceilings and thought I could achieve anything. He instilled in me courage, honor and integrity, serving to this day as my life inspiration.

I am grateful for all the opportunities the veterinary field has provided me—starting with veterinary school at Michigan State University—go green! As a young veterinarian with a feline practice in Atlanta some years ago, I could have never dreamed of playing a role in the advancement of

veterinary forensics. What started as stepping up to do the right thing and report animal cruelty has led to a completely different career path and, ultimately, to leading a dynamic organization like the NAVC. I hope that I can inspire and empower others with a dream of making a difference for animals so that our field can continue to lead the charge in advocating for animals everywhere.

Our goal for this Conference is for it to become the “home” of animal health education, innovation, leadership and more. It will be a place and time where our community can “come together” and set new heights in animal and personal well being. NAVC is committed to helping the veterinary profession with the addition of the new Health and Wellbeing Center and education track providing valuable tools and resources.

That phrase “coming together,” has special meaning to me. I’m constantly amazed by how our field “comes together” to not only support animals, but our communities in general during times of need. This past year has seen a

number of terrible tragedies that have impacted us all in some way. It also emphasizes the importance of our personal health, wellbeing and our homes.

Unfortunately, one of those tragedies occurred right here in Orlando with the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub. As NAVC’s first openly gay President, this obviously held significance for me, my partner Deb and many of our friends and

family. It’s truly been inspiring to see Orlando rebound from this tragedy and provide assistance to the victims’ pets. I’m proud that the City Beautiful is the home of our Conference and the animal health industry.

Thank you again for coming to the NAVC Conference 2017. We hope you have an outstanding experience.

BRINGS HIS HARD WORK TO THE NAVC The Opening Ceremony wasn’t a “dirty job,” but Mike Rowe handled it with his usual good humor PRESENTS

Mike Rowe is a TV host, writer, narrator, producer, actor and spokesman. As the former host of Dirty Jobs and narrator for Deadliest Catch, he was the perfect fit for inspiring and entertaining the full-house audience at last night’s Opening Ceremony.

Rowe first dove into television in 1990, when he auditioned for the QVC Shopping Channel and was promptly hired after talking about a pencil for nearly 8 minutes.

Throughout the ’90s, Mike relished his role as a chronic freelancer with lots of time to loaf around. Then, a 3-hour special he pitched to the Discovery Channel ended up resulting in the show Dirty Jobs. Viewers liked it, and Discovery responded by ordering 39 episodes.

Over the next decade, Rowe traveled to all 50 states and completed 300 different jobs, transforming cable television into a landscape of swamps, sewers, ice roads, coal mines, oil derricks, crab boats, hillbillies and lumberjack camps.

In 2008, Rowe launched mikeroweWORKS, a PR campaign designed to reinvigorate the skilled trades. In late 2013, Rowe and Caterpillar worked together to launch PROFOUNDLY DISCONNECTED, a new initiative focused on technical recruitment, as well as the book Profoundly Disconnected®, A True Confession From Mike Rowe.

Rowe’s latest show, Somebody’s Gotta Do It, debuted in 2014 on CNN. Rowe also currently runs the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, which awards scholarships to students pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Forbes identified Mike as one of the country’s 10 Most Trustworthy Celebrities in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Join us in welcoming veterinary professionals from Estonia, Israel, Namibia and Sri Lanka to Orlando Each year, the NAVC Conference hosts more than 17,000 attendees from more than 80 countries. Among these attendees — at our invitation — is a select group of forward-thinking veterinary leaders from developing nations, ready to learn all they can and bring new solutions back to their countries.

These leaders return home to present new techniques and protocols at local professional meetings, paying forward the inspiration to improve animal care in their countries.

This year, four outstanding individuals have been selected for the Colin F. Burrows International Scholar Program. This program is named in honor of Colin Burrows,

BVetMed, PhD, Past President of NAVC and the former NAVC Executive Director, who launched the NAVC International Outreach Committee and program in 1996.

Here’s how the scholars are selected: • Each year, our NAVC International Outreach Committee reviews applications and recommendations from veterinarians who meet the following standards/criteria: 1. Prior experience with veterinary continuing education programs in the nominee’s home country or regio 2. Potential to use the NAVC experience to foster improved veterinary

continuing education in the nominee’s home country or region 3. Demonstrated leadership qualities • To select the nominees, the NAVC International Outreach Committee works closely with WSAVA, which collects nominations and ultimately approves the finalists. We pick candidates from each of these WSAVA regions: Europe/Middle East/Africa, Asia/Oceania and The Americas.

• The NAVC International Committee makes the final decision and invites each honoree to the NAVC Conference as our guest.

Program recipients receive a complimentary NAVC Conference registration and hotel package. NAVC Board members or Past Presidents proudly host these individuals.

• Past recipients have come from Afghanistan, Albania, Argentina, Bolivia, BosniaHerzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Columbia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, India, Indonesia, Latvia, Russia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine and Venezuela.

Dr. Adank is a veterinary surgeon at Windhoek Veterinary Clinic, a mixed veterinary practice in Windhoek, Namibia (70% small animal). His goal is to be a motivated and purposedriven veterinarian who is dedicated to the well-being of his patients (big and small). He hopes to contribute to the veterinary profession in both private practice and/or welfare work.

Dr. Thammitiyagodage is currently a Fellow at the Sri Lanka College of Veterinary Surgeons. She has also served as a visiting lecturer on the Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition at the University of Wayamba and on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Peradeniya (veterinary pathobiology). Additionally, she has received several awards for research and papers on nephrology.

Dr. Sõstra is a veterinary surgeon working as an emergency veterinarian in a quickly developing clinic in Estonia. She speaks five languages and has already attended several veterinary conferences in Estonia, as well as the 58th Congress of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association in Birmingham, England, and the Annual Finnish Veterinary Congress in Helsinki, Finland. She has worked in 24-hour emergency clinics and received her degree in veterinary medicine from the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Dr. Prager is the Chief CEO for the Israel Companion Animal Veterinary Association (ICAVA). He is also the ICAVA representative to WSAVA. He practices small animal medicine at his two clinics and attended the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine. Before going to school for veterinary medicine, he served as a Major in the Israeli Defense Forces.

In graduate school, he focused on surface structural complexity and its influence on ecological indices of aquatic communities.

INSIDE NAVC STANDOUT DR. SENIOR HONORED AT OPENING CEREMONY Last night, the NAVC honored an integral member of the NAVC Conference.

David Senior, BVSc, DACVIM (SAIM), DECVIM-CA, has served as the Conference Coordinator for over a decade, overseeing Hands-on Laboratories, multiple contracts, and quality control on the conference floor. He is also a Past President of the Eastern States Veterinary Association (1994), the predecessor of the NAVC. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Senior has worked in large animal practice in Alberta, Canada, and undertook residency training at the University of Pennsylvania. Following that, he served on the faculty of

the University of Florida for 13 years. He is now Professor of Veterinary Medicine and Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Louisiana State University.

Colin Burrows, BVetMed, PhD, DACVIM, has worked with Dr. Senior for many years, and had this to say about his colleague: “David is a man of integrity, vision, commitment and consummate organization skills. If he sees a problem, he sees a way through it.

He cares about the industry profoundly, and he is very deserving of this honor.”

Dr. Burrows went on to describe both the challenges and humorous everyday events that come with being Conference

Coordinator. Under Dr. Senior’s leadership, the first successful hands-on dental lab and endoscopy training took place. Burrows also spoke of an instance where three horses were brought into the ballroom for handson clinics, and a room being draped so birds could roam in it. Through it all, Dr. Senior has been committed to following protocol and ensuring the safety of any live animals used in demonstrations.

“Under his leadership, the hands-on labs just exploded,” Dr. Burrows said.

“And he’s been an integral part of making the NAVC Institute a reality.”

Meet Lola, the pet behind Jamie Laws, strategic account manager for NAVC. The miniature schnauzer joined Jamie when Jamie started her career as a pharmaceutical sales rep and was feeling the loneliness of spending a lot of time “on the road.”

“I spent months looking for the perfect sidekick and finally decided on a miniature schnauzer. I immediately fell in love with a picture of a tiny liverand-tan schnauzer online. When I contacted the breeder, she told me that that particular puppy had already found a home. I was heartbroken, but she talked me into coming to see the rest of the litter. Reluctantly, I went. To my surprise, the puppy I had my heart set on wasn’t the one that was already taken. It was clearly meant to be!

Did you have pets growing up?

I had a dog, Gidget. She was a tough cookie — her favorite pastime was chasing cars and the school bus. One day she chased the dogcatcher — not smart!

How old is Lola today?

Lola is an old lady: 11 years old.

Explain her name.

Her full name is Lola Bean Laws. She was just two pounds when I got her, and she looked like a little bean, hence the middle name. Also, I was a child of the grunge era so I was a huge fan of Kurt Cobain and his daughter’s middle name is Bean. Silly, I know.

Describe your relationship with Lola and what she brings to your life.

Lola is my best bud and I would do anything for her. When I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014, I truly believe that Lola knew just how sick I was. Just having her to cuddle with when I got home from a long day at the hospital made a world of difference.

If Lola could talk, what would she tell you are her top three favorite things?

Sleeping, napping and lying on someone’s lap. See the common theme?

Her company, her bossy personality and snuggling with her.

Do you bring Lola to work?

I work remotely so Lola goes to work with me every day. She very much enjoys all of the conference calls I have and has even been heard snoring by my coworkers during the calls.

What are Lola’s favorite treats?

Lola LOVES apples. When she hears me slicing them in the kitchen, she comes running!
