INSIDE > LOOKING AHEAD Center-to-Table Gardens You might have noticed the 2,000-square-foot aeroponic structure located in the OCCC’s West Concourse’s Westwood Lobby entrance. But did you know that these “Center-to-Table Gardens” grow edibles in an all-natural, chemical-free environment for use in meals prepared at the OCCC? Eighty-one towers, each with 44 planting spots, produce herbs and vegetables for meals prepared by OCCC’s food service partner, Centerplate. Centerplate is also responsible for the plants, seedlings and maintenance. One week’s harvest alone can total nearly 800 plants that Centerplate can use as ingredients!

PROVEN SUSTAINABILITY & GREEN INITIATIVES The OCCC, also known as “The Center of Hospitality,” actively promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and is a recognized industry leader in sustainability and green initiatives. Here’s a look at some of the Center’s programs and their results.

Water Conservation & Efficiency The OCCC’s strategies to conserve water and improve the efficiency of water flow systems has resulted in a 10% reduction in consumption intensity across the campus since 2012.

Waste Management & Recycling With the cooperation of clients and service contractors, the OCCC’s waste reduction, reuse and recycling program has reduced the volume of waste generated at the OCCC by 53% since 2004. Thanks to recycling receptacles placed in all public and exhibit spaces to encourage guest participation, some events have achieved recycling rates of 87%! To take it a step further, food wastes are recycled and composted through Harvest Power of Orlando, Florida, where organic waste is converted to methane energy to power wastewater treatment facilities and composted fertilizers for farmers.

Renewable Energy Production The OCCC owns one of the largest solar energy rooftop arrays in the southeast United States, with a solar energy program that directly serves power demands for events held in the North/South Building.

Reusable Donations The OCCC works with every client to ensure that any food and/or products left over after an event or show are donated to local schools, hospitals or other nonprofit organizations.

Public Art for Public Spaces The recently renovated Valencia Ballroom in the West Concourse boasts four large panel pieces by Central Florida painter/sculptor/designer Marcos Cruz. Cruz was commissioned by the Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs Department as part of its Public Art program to create four 24’ x 9.5’ wall sculptures for the Ballroom.

Cruz’s geometric design builds on circles representing how people come together at the Convention Center and echoes circle motifs used throughout the OCCC. Upon closer examination, you’ll see the design is abstracted and cut into the aluminum with Cruz’s organic-looking acid finish to add color. Each of the four pieces anchors a corner of the 62,000-square-foot multipurpose room.

The mission of the County’s Public Art program is to provide citizens and visitors access to world-class art in public spaces, while enhancing the visual environment through a diversity of styles, content and artists.

INSIDE FEAR FREE AND THE NAVC: CONFERENCE AND BEYOND Studies have shown that pet owners avoid taking their pets to the vet for three main reasons: (1) their pet’s stress, (2) money issues and (3) their own stress. Two of these three factors are fear related.

Therefore, in 2017, the NAVC Conference is featuring more than a dozen sessions on the importance of keeping patients fear free. The Fear Free℠ initiative (FearFreePets.com), founded by Marty Becker, DVM, “America’s Veterinarian,” aims to improve the delivery of veterinary care for everyone, from pets and owners to veterinary staff, by “taking the ‘pet’ out of ‘petrified’” and putting pets back into practices.

“Fear Free is the most significant and far-reaching initiative in the history of companion animal practice,” said Dr. Becker.

“The NAVC has gone ‘all in’ to help educate and train the profession on the nuts-andbolts of how Fear Free needs to be frontand-center of every veterinary visit.”

Sessions at this year’s conference cover all aspects of reducing stress through Fear

Free techniques, from hospital design to sedation to educating pet owners.

The NAVC’s commitment to this initiative doesn’t end today, though.

INSIDE PETS BEHIND THE PEOPLE SUMMER GRAZIANO

Meet BoBo (formerly known as Bowden!), the pet behind Summer Graziano, senior marketing director for the NAVC. The chocolate Labrador retriever joined the Graziano family a year ago.

“BoBo was originally my dad’s, but due to my dad’s busy work travel schedule, we welcomed him into our home with open arms last year.”

Did you have pets growing up?

I grew up with lots of pets — dogs, cats, hamsters, chickens, pigs, cows, rabbits, turtles… and more! But the pet that was closest to my heart was Roxy, my little three-pound Chihuahua. We spent 15 years together. She was my best friend through high school, college, the beginning of my career, marriage and even the first year of motherhood. She was white with brown ears, and she loved to cuddle and kiss.

She was so high maintenance, but we didn’t mind. Everyone she ever met loved her. She changed my husband from a rough, tough bigdog kind of guy to a man with a spoiled little Chihuahua on his arm everywhere he went.

How old is BoBo today, and how old was he when he joined your pack?

BoBo is now 8 and was 7 when we welcomed him into our home.

My dad named him Bowden as pup. You can imagine that as hard-core Florida Gator fans — my husband Matt played Gator baseball and we both graduated from University of Florida — we were less than pleased. When we took him in, we found ourselves calling him BoBo for short, and it stuck.

Describe your relationship with BoBo and what he brings to your life.

BoBo is our family’s first big guy, and he’s brought so much life and love to our home. Our son Camden (age 3) loves to play fetch with him. He’s also become the very best friend for our new daughter Carlee (age 1). They snuggle and share treats and kisses. She likes to climb on him, and he doesn’t ever seem to mind. He loves to sleep by her crib and has kept an eye on her from birth.

If BoBo could talk, what would he tell you are his top three favorite things?

Swimming in the pool, being with our children and eating doughnuts that people leave out on the counter.

Since you can talk, what are your top three favorite things that you enjoy about your pet?

Always having a companion, and watching our children love and play with him.

Do you bring BoBo to work?

I work from home, and BoBo is my personal assistant.

What are BoBo’s favorite treats?

Anything the kids drop on the floor.

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) spent 2016 researching options and opportunities that will help drive the professional standards for credentialed veterinary technicians. Currently, credentialed veterinary technicians may be referred to as RVT, CVT, LVT or LVMT, depending on the state in which they practice.

This causes great confusion among veterinary consumers and even within the veterinary profession.

NAVTA’s goal is to create one standard title for credentialed veterinary technicians, a uniform credentialing process (for entry and maintenance) and title protection in every state. At present, a majority of survey respondents favor the term veterinary nurse (for full survey results, visit navta.net and click “2016 Demographic Survey Results”). Those who favor the term veterinary technician have identified two objections: 1. “We do more than nurses.”

2. “The nurses will never allow us.”

“We Do More Than Nurses.”

At first glance, this seems to be true. Veterinary technicians administer anesthesia, monitor surgical recovery, provide nursing care to patients, perform dental prophylaxis and more; however, when the scope of duties are compared, the similarities outweigh the differences. Look at veterinary medicine moving forward, and how many areas are becoming specialized in veterinary medicine.

One could also place the educational requirements of veterinary technicians and nurses next to each other and find more similarities than not.

Ask yourself: What do your veterinary clients understand about your position as a veterinary technician? How do you explain your role in their pets’ care to them?

“The Nurses Will Never Allow Us.” This used to be the presumed answer; however, preliminary results and discussions show that

reality is much different than we might have thought. Nurse title protection exists in a majority of US states, but the status of these protections causes no conflict in 14 of those states; an additional 12 states have no title protection.

NAVTA has learned that many professionals in the human medical profession do not know/understand the role of the credentialed veterinary technician/nurse, nor are they aware of the educational requirements and board examinations needed to earn and use the title.

Providing information on the educational and credentialing process has gained the support of nursing professionals.

What Does This Process Look Like?

NAVTA is working through processes with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA), American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), and Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE) along with other veterinary stakeholders; they will also build relationships with nursing associations.

Recommending that the same title be used in every state with uniform requirements affects many entities, and all processes and procedures must be considered, allowing the right strategy to be developed and implemented. Currently, informational webinars are being developed for state veterinary technician associations to guide the questions and processes on a stateby-state basis.

INSIDE CE CERTIFICATE FAQ One of the top questions we hear each year is, “How do I get proof of my CE credit hours?” We’re happy to provide this answer and many others to help you track what you’ve earned here.

Q: Is NAVC an approved provider of RACE-approved CE programs?

A: Yes. The NAVC is an approved Continuing Education RACE Provider, Provider ID #172. NAVC programs are reviewed and certified by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards Registry of Approved Continuing Education (AAVSB RACE), a national clearinghouse for the approval of continuing education providers and their programs. Providers/presenters voluntarily apply to the RACE program and agree to abide by the RACE Standards. AAVSB does not solicit participation in the RACE program. Please contact the AAVSB RACE program if you have any comments/concerns regarding any program’s validity or relevancy to the veterinary profession.

A: Over the 5 days of our Conference, you’ll find more than 1,200 CE credit hour opportunities in a wide range of topics and session formats. There’s something for every veterinary team member. Nearly all specialties and interests are covered in small animal, large animal, exotic, food animal and wildlife medicine as well as practice/business management and professional growth. You can attain as many as 41.5 hours of RACE-approved CE here, depending on your state Board limitations.

Q: How does the CE credit-hour calculation work?

A: You’ll receive your Certificate of Attendance and number of CE hours based on your registration type (Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, Practice Manager, etc.) and the session(s) you attend. Some state boards have limitations on the hours accepted in certain categories and restrictions on methods of delivery for veterinary CE as well as specific procedures for certification and documentation of attendance.

You’re responsible for complying with your state board guidelines and limitations, and tracking and reporting your earned CE credit hours accordingly. Please check with your state board for details, or stop by our Registration Desk/Information Desk at the OCCC for assistance.

Q: How do I keep track of my CE course attendance?

A: First, make sure you get your badge scanned at the door for each session. Door Monitors will be available to do this for you at the session door, or you can manage your Record of Participation (ROP) at the CE Center or online at NAVC.com/CE. In addition, we recommend keeping a handwritten record of your session attendance (on the 2017 Record of Participation form in our Official Program Guide, p. 50) to compare with the electronic record. You can email or print your electronic record at the CE Center starting on Monday, February 6, during the Conference.

Q: How do I get my certificate(s) of attendance?

A: Check your ROPs at the CE Center in the OCCC by the Registration Desk. The CE Center opens on Monday, February 6. This is where you have the following three options to get your CE certificate(s): •O ption 1: Email the certificate PDF(s) directly from our CE kiosk to your personal email (this is BY FAR the easiest and best way to maintain an electronic record).

•O ption 2: Print certificates and ROPs from our CE kiosks before you leave.* IMPORTANT: Veterinarians licensed in the state of Texas MUST obtain their CE certificate prior to leaving the NAVC Conference 2017.

Certificates are printed at the Registration Desk and cannot be mailed or issued after the Conference.

•O ption 3: Print certificates at home. Visit NAVC.com/CE to log in to your Attendee Service Center and click “ACCESS YOUR CE RECORD.” You will be able to make edits to ensure your record is correct.

On January 24, the NAVC announced the introduction of a new publication, which will join TVP and Today’s Veterinary Technician as another official journal of the NAVC: Today’s Veterinary Business. Launching later this year, it will be helmed by Editor Ken Niedziela, who most recently served as editor of Veterinary Practice News and has an extensive background in publishing.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to join the NAVC as Editor of Today’s Veterinary Business, and I accept the challenge of building the best businessfocused publication in the veterinary industry,” Niedziela commented.

Joining Niedziela on the editorial team, Deborah A. Stone, MBA, PhD, CVPM, said, “The veterinary profession has a growing interest in resources that focus on non-medical information, as business has become the companion to veterinary medicine. I am thrilled to join the Today’s Veterinary Business team and deliver a comprehensive business resource that will provide content to help veterinary professionals develop leadership, embrace innovation, and realize success.”

Today’s Veterinary Business will be the first addition to the NAVC family of publications that is solely focused on the business side of the animal health practice.

Spark! is a new online channel featuring weekly video content focusing on important industry news, innovations and inspirational stories. The goal is to “spark” conversation, collaboration and debate about topics affecting our community.

In the current world, data is king. Whoever captures and uses the best data in the most effective manner will eventually have the most opportunities to succeed. It is the same in veterinary medicine.

No longer is it sustainable to continue to avoid use of digital tools and capabilities in veterinary practice. The use of digital technology in medicine is obvious, such as the use of digital radiology, ultrasonography, and other imaging modalities. Practices that avoid use of digital medical technology would be considered out of date and approaching incompetence, because the digital technologies have advanced the quality and capabilities of diagnostics. Each is made possible by the successful capture and effective use of data.
