Centre for Vernacular Architecture
Internship - CVA
(BANGALORE)
The Center for Vernacular Architecture is a Co-operative of building craft persons spearheaded by R L Kumar, established in the late 80’s. Building on the work of practitioners like Laurie Baker and Hassan Fathy, our architectural practice promotes the use of locally available materials, traditional building techniques, culturally and climatically relevant building design. CVA has been designing and executing various turnkey vernacular architectural projects in South India as also other parts of the country. Vernacular Architecture is a little known and less explored field that is concerned with Architectural building traditions/practices that are cost effective, ecologically sensible and culturally relevant. Initiated as a project of the CIEDS Collective, it was registered as an independent trust in 2009.

Thesis - The World of Illusions The world of illusions which will trick your confidence in your own senses, but will also amaze you by doing so; the world that will confuse you completely, but also educate you. This world offers interactive, immersive and fun experience for all generations – a perfect, unusual and exciting place. Amusing and awesome tricks will teach you about vision, perception, the human brain and science so it will be easier to perceive why your eyes see things which your brain cannot understand. To create a space for all generations, to feel engaged and to enjoy the space. I would always like to trick on people,so how could a space be designed combining magic and Architecture.

Wave as seating space
Time as an illusion - Maze

The wave acts as a Seating space and also an Amphitheatre which is used for announcing the next event happening in the theatre as well as in Museum. A good view of the water body. Seating is set in between Landscape illusions and the water body, so that people can look on either of the sides and relax. There is a provision to have a boat ride.

Those walls are made of concrete and the openings in between will be designed with 3 types. 1. the frame and Mirror 2. only the frame. 3. the frame and glass
These 3 things will confuse the person who is inside the maze. for ex.- They see the outer space by glass but they cannot pass through it.

Academic project - Future of the Factory The Albuquerque tile factory is an old ruin-like structures that form a rustic backdrop, brings in a artistic experience within the building.Several features defined its space, including structural system, materiality, details of junctions, quality of light, character of volume and mass, smell of stacks, broken tiles on floors all around, ruined roofs, and many things....Each and every minute part of the space played an influential role within. Experience in site was totally dramatic compared to the outside world, the play of volumes inside with pile of bricks, stones and tiles.Glass tiles were provided in random resulting in a beautiful pattern of light within the space, provided large quantum of light. Some places would be almost nothing without the stacks, providing sense of warmth within and the smell of stacks along with the enclosure evolves a calm and subtle place where any would Pause and experience it.

Academic project - Primary School Primary school is a phase where we explored on different spatial qualities evolved through specific organisation of building.Common spaces and programme were evolved to improvise the social quality of life and also engage with other activities happenig within. This School is designed by combining clusters of 4 classrooms with a central court yard space. There is a strong axis created by combining the clusters in a linear way.The Amphi-theatre is in the front of the school which is accessible for students for their asssembly. Each standard will have a common classroom which can be used for any extra curricular activities.

2-day Workshop on the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. We were said to collect elements from nature around the campus and to do a spacial model imitating the element.
Play with scraps
Travellers transect
A travel based sketching workshop on “Experiencing Architecture along Water edges”.We explored travelling to a few places such as Swasthik tank at Thiruvellarai, Nilaikottai, truvaiyaru and Rock fort precinct.
A 5 day long workshop on Lino-cut and Print This technique normally in the purvie of Fine Arts student found a whole new expression in the hands of us which blended together the finesse of their craft with their visualization skills and elevated the technique to an art form.
A handson workshop on upscaling used tyres into play furniture..We were exposed to working with the material and learn it’s potentials and limitations.. Guided by Ar.Pooja Raj and Ar. Nancy, Anthill Creations.
Timbrel Vaulting
Understanding structures
An Exploration on the construction and technique of Timbrel Vaulting,. Based on several layers of tiles that fuse together to work as a laminated shell, the thin profiles of the Timbrel vaults are to be seen to be believed....

Building construction
We were exposed to different grades of cement, concrete mix proportions, application of admixtures used in concrete, thumb rules for design of concrete, different grades of steel available in market
A day hands-on workshop for us to Explore the Construction and Structural Principles of Gothic Architecture. The Workshop involved Constructing Gothic pointed Arches, Flying Buttresses, Catenary and study of light.
The fluidity and mouldability of the technique offered insights into the usage of this medium in architectural model making. A two day long workshop on Clay Modelling Techniques by Ar.Preetha of Studio ART ‘O’ ARCH.
