Data from the United Nations (U.N.) shows that 8.9 percent of the population was aged 65 and over in 2010. This is projected to increase to 19.5 percent in 2030.
Thailand is the old man of Southeast Asia “Thailand’s aging demographic is very serious and there is a sense that this is not being discussed at the policy level,” said HSBC ASEAN economist Su Sian Lim. The United Nations (U.N.) expects Thailand’s working-age population, those aged between 15 and 64, to peak in 2017. However, its data show that 8.9 percent of the population was aged 65 and over in 2010. This is projected to increase to 19.5 percent in 2030. Ban Krua Community Ban Krua Community is an old community in the centre of Bangkok. The community dates back to more than 200 years ago. Most of the population of the community are middle age and old age. The community holds many cultural heritage, from silk weaving to traditional Thai cooking and nursery rhymes.
Ban Krua Community
Ban Krua Community - Jim Thompson - Thai Silk Jim Thompson was an American ex-architect, silk merchant and art collector who re-vitalised Thai silk in the 1950s-1960s. He constructed a treditional Thai house by the canal, just opposite to Ban Krua Community. In the past, Ban Krua Community was the source of many Jim Thompson brand products. However, not many people in the Ban Krua Community are still in the silk weaving industry. Jim Thompson House is now a museum showcasing his art collection and the company’s silk products.
Modernisations are posing threat to old communities like Ban Krua as well as the heritage of the city.

Thailand’s old communities are vanishing The rapid economic development across much of Asia has raised living standards for millions. But the relentless drive to build, modernize and emulate the West — combined with a mindset that equates the old with backwardness — has already consigned many traditional communities to rubble, and with them a way of life. “There is more than just the architecture to preserve in the community. If these old buildings are demolished, the people will go. So will the lifestyle and culture. And that is irreplaceable,” says Tiamsoon Sirisrisak, a researcher on culture at Bangkok’s Mahidol University. source: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/asias-old-communities-vanishing-amid-rapid-growth

Mount Pleasant London Planning permission has been given for 681 homes on part of the Royal Mail site - despite criticism over a lack of affordable housing. Mount Pleasant - on the Islington/Camden border - will be one of the largest development sites in central London. Camden and Islington councils both recommended rejecting the plan. But Councillor James Murray, from Islington Council, said an opportunity to build hundreds of “genuinely affordable homes for local people had been missed. source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-29475191
