Senior Center Newsletter November-December 2020

Inside This Issue

Hello to all!

To those who play cards and other table games, I miss you! I miss the Mah Jongg ladies and the trading of good books . It's not the same without the poker players with their funny jokes and good-natured teasing . The days are lonesome without the Bridge and Canasta players whose greetings I looked forward to each week . I can’t wait until we all can be together again .

To the Park Larks, I miss seeing your bright faces and hearing your joyful singing on Thursdays as well as the delicious treats you are known for . I have lost five pounds since I’ve seen you! I know you miss each other but I also know you’re keeping in touch . And I think Chuck Sansone has a birthday coming up soon—101! We will celebrate you at our first opportunity .

I’m happy to report that some popular activities have begun again . Ceramics has a full class for the first time since COVID-19 changed our lives . The participants tell me they are comfortable with the spacing and feel safe participating . It is great to see people getting their hands into clay again!

A recent Barry Bradford event based on comedienne Betty White garnered a group of 12 people in person with another 47 watching virtually . Special thanks to Barry Bradford for providing this program to the Senior Center at no charge to encourage more of you to try virtual programming . A Mah Jongg class, the Tech Workshops and Movie and Lunch all have had small groups, safely spaced at the Village Green Senior Center .

If I can be of any assistance to you, leave a voicemail at 847-897-6162 or send me a message at lwassinger@ nbparks.org and you will be contacted between 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.

1810 Walters Avenue

We are focused on maintaining strict standards based on CDC recommendations . If you sign up for an in-person activity you are expected to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer upon arrival and wear a mask throughout the activity . You also need to maintain at least six feet of distance from other participants; this is strictly enforced—just ask the Knitting and Crocheting Group about my six-foot yellow stick!

With the new year there will be changes for the Senior Center . Starting in January, fitness classes will be held at the Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) . This gives us the opportunity to offer more programming opportunities at the Senior Center at Village Green .

Lastly, thank you for the many well wishes before and after my knee surgery . The special treats, emails and calls have made me so happy! I am healing well and making great progress . Thanks also to Cindy, Dennis, Nancy, Ruth and Priscilla for including me in your outdoor gathering . It was so nice to catch up . As always, thanks to Mady, Marcia and Marv—they know why! Take good care of yourselves,

Senior Center Updates

Check out the latest Senior Center information!

Thank you for your continued support of the Northbrook Park District! We are following the CDC and State of Illinois guidelines for reopening . For general Park District updates, visit nbparks .org/COVID-19 .

Good News for Zoom!

Creating a separate Zoom account to access our virtual senior programs will no longer be a requirement . Enjoy virtual events by simply clicking on the link which will be sent to you 24 hours in advance . We want to simplify the process for your enjoyment . So make sure you are on time .

Participants will still need to enroll in programs as before and only those enrolled will be admitted to the event . For added security, once a program begins “the room” will be locked .

More Good News!

In case you didn’t hear, Secretary of State Jesse White has again extended the deadline for expiring licenses until Feb . 1, 2021 . That means those of you who have licenses that have expired or will expire in November, December or January will have extra time to renew . Seniors age 75 and older have been granted a one-year driver’s license extension that expires on their birthday in 2021 . You will not have to visit a DMV immediately .

Keep in mind that the deadline for renewing license plate stickers remains November 1 . You can do that online at cyberdriveillinois .com .

Senior Advisory Council

Your Senior Advisory Council members fill an important role here at the Senior Center . They are the eyes and ears of what people want to see and do! They pass along information that is shared with them to help us make good decisions regarding events, classes and other programs . The members who participated in the most recent meeting on September 9, 2020 were Secretary Julie Goforth, Lenore Bernstein, Mady Fern, Cindy Vander Kurr and Larry Schaffel . This is a good group of movers and shakers who like to help get things done!

The Council determined it’s a good time to open up to new members . For more information, anyone who is interested in participating should contact Supervisor Laura Wassinger by email at lwassinger@ nbparks .org or by phone at 847-897-6162 . The council meets in person at the Senior Center at Village Green every other month on the second Wednesday from 3pm-4:30pm .

Raffle Winner!

September’s raffle Winner is Judy Decker who has been participating in Zumba Gold classes since the Senior Center reopened in July and just happens to be one of the Chicago Bulls’ Swingin’ Seniors!

Caring for Others

On behalf of the Northbrook Senior Center both the Crafty Ladies and the Knitting and Crocheting Group are in the process of creating items to donate to various schools and other charitable organizations . The Crafty Ladies are donating face masks to children attending the Whittier School in Waukegan . The school is the lowest income school in Northern Illinois with 650 students, grades K through 5 .

Originated by Hanc Weiner and led by Pat Thalman and Phyllis Kosner, the Knitting Group donates

hats, scarves, gloves and blankets to various organizations . Some of the organizations who have benefitted from their efforts include: the VA of North Chicago, The Ark and Mercy Home in Chicago, Walt Whitman Elementary School in Wheeling, the Whittier School in Waukegan, PADS in Deerfield and the Women’s Shelter of Greater Chicago . Donations of yarn and gift cards to Joann Fabrics, Michael’s or Hobby Lobby are welcome to help support the creation of items for donation . The message of these two groups is that helping to take care of others is something we can do to get through this together!

You may notice for the upcoming Holiday Bingo in December we will be collecting canned and dry goods to donate to the Northfield Food Pantry . Not only does this help the Pantry, which has relaxed its requirements to anyone who needs assistance, but also gives the donator an extra Bingo card!

Reaching Out

Did you now that being lonely can increase one’s white blood cell count as if they have an illness? Many of our seniors have adjusted to staying at home quite well, taking walks and participating in Zoom activities . But there is a vulnerable group who are unable to get out due to physical restrictions . Others live alone and have very little contact . Many in this group do not know how to use technology and are often uncomfortable asking for help, while some don’t have the necessary devices or services needed . Some of our Senior Advisory Council members have offered to make regular telephone calls to those seniors .

If you can use a friendly phone call yourself or know of someone who would benefit please contact me, Laura Wassinger, at 847-291-2993 or lwassinger@ nbparks .org . I will make sure to connect you with one of our kindhearted Advisory Council members .
