We are grateful for her extensive efforts to make Northbrook an amazing place to live and connect with others .
Celebrating Nature
Northbrook Park District celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Trail Through Time, a beautiful and educational nature walk at Techny Prairie Park and Fields
Located on 14 acres along the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River, the Trail Through Time pays tribute to the natural and cultural history of the land, showcasing a restored prairie and wetlands home to mammals, birds and insects
The Trail Through Time opened in July 2004; a year later, it earned an Outstanding Facility and Parks Award from the Illinois Park and Recreation Association
The 20th anniversary celebration took place during the Paint the Prairie weekend event held in early September and featured free art activities and a plein air (“outdoors” in French) painting demonstration for children and adults
Great Partnership
Expanding its longstanding relationship with a valuable member of the local business community, Northbrook Park District partnered with The Landmark Inn Bar & Grille to provide food and beverages for outdoor events this summer
The restaurant participated in the Park District’s Cup-In-Hand Kickball Tournament, Party on the Green, Northbrook Brewfest and Autumnfest events, much to the delight of attendees
Housed in Northbrook’s oldest commercial structure built in 1885, The Landmark Inn is co-owned and operated by siblings Helene Kapetaneas and Constantine Kyriazopoulos .
“Helene and Constantine have been exceptional partners to Northbrook Park District, consistently sharing their love for the community at our special events Their commitment to Northbrook makes each event more memorable and enjoyable for all,” said Northbrook Park District Director of Recreation Eileen Loftus
Accessible Numbers
This year, the Park District created its first Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR), which offers a snapshot of the District’s fiscal health
The document was created to further promote transparency and accountability, presenting the Park District’s audit and budget in an accessible and easily digestible format
The 2023 PAFR offers a summary of the Park District’s financial activities with explanatory graphics about the District’s demographics and the year’s accomplishments and challenges It also gives an overview of the budget and how the District allocates funds to its parks, recreation facilities and programs, capital projects and more

Meadowhill Aquatic Center Bathhouse and Mechanical Upgrades Project
Construction at Meadowhill Aquatic Center began in August 2024 following the regular seasonal closure schedule . The indoor renovation includes extensive upgrades to the mechanical equipment that pumps, filters, circulates and heats the pool water In addition, the lobby will receive a new layout that includes direct access to the pool deck along with two gender neutral changing rooms, one of which offers an adult changing table The main patron locker rooms will receive a refresh of the finishes while a new first aid room and climate-controlled guard break room will be created for enhanced safety of both patrons and staff Outside, new shade structures will be added, effectively doubling the amount of shaded seating areas available to patrons . Additional improvements address ADA code requirements along with the installation of a new fire suppression system and replacement of some concrete decking .
The timeline for this project is to open in June 2025, with a schedule that is dependent upon weather, permitting and the availability of the appropriate materials and trade workers . This project has been partially funded through a $600,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) .
For more information about the Meadowhill Aquatic Center Bathhouse and Mechanical Upgrades Project, visit nbparks.org/projects

Deactivation (the system has determined conditions are safe)
Three 5-second blasts will sound and the strobe will go off
Testing takes place on Tuesdays at 9:30am for the lightning systems. Be sure not to confuse testing with an actual alarm! Testing will not take place if there is threatening weather .

General Registration Information
Commitment to Quality
We want you to be happy with your recreation choices! If you’re not satisfied with a program or instructor, you may ask to repeat the class, transfer to another class or receive a refund. The Park District will try to resolve instructor and/or program issues to your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, the full or prorated refund will be approved. Requests can be made at any Registration Office or by calling 847-291-2993.
Withdrawal & Transfer Requests
We understand that circumstances arise that may lead to a patron’s inability to participate in a class/program. Unless otherwise noted, a request for a transfer or refund can be made if:
• The request is submitted three business days prior to the start of a program.
• The instructor and participant agree the participant’s skill level is not appropriate.
• The class is canceled or rescheduled and participant cannot attend at the new time.
• The patron cannot participate due to illness or injury (doctor’s note may be required).
Refunds
All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.
Camps, workshops, before/after school care, golf course green fees, adult sports leagues, daily admissions, passes/punch cards, tickets to entertainment, special events and trips may have nonrefundable deposits and/or special restrictions. Refunds do not apply to program supplies/materials purchased, gift certificates, food and contractual programs.
Program Cancellations
When people wait until the last minute to register, classes may be canceled, so register early to avoid disappointment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, those who signed up will be issued a full refund.
Residency
All Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee for programs. If you have questions about residency, call the main Registration Office at 847-291-2993.
Health Conditions
Participants should notify the Park District at the time of registration about any medical condition that might require special attention by District staff. Information will remain confidential.
Code of Conduct
Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times in programs and facilities. That includes respect for all people, equipment and facilities and cooperative, positive participation. The staff will review rules with participants and may dismiss anyone whose behavior endangers safety or negatively affects a program or facility.
Are You Covered?
The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants; the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Review your personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain high risk activities require a waiver/release form, which must be signed before the first class.
Scholarship Requests
Because we believe every Park District resident should have the opportunity to participate in our offerings, we will attempt to provide financial assistance to those faced with financial hardship. Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook assists the District with the administration of our scholarship program. Applicants who meet the criteria can receive financial assistance towards recreation programs and memberships. Applicants only need to qualify once per calendar year and application forms are available by contacting Melanie Cohen at mcohen@nbparks.org or 847-2912995.
Inclusion
We encourage participation by everyone and provide reasonable accommodations in accordance with ADA standards. If you require program assistance for special needs, check the box on the Registration Form to be contacted by the District’s NSSRA Inclusion Liaison. Questions? Call 847-291-2995.
ADA Compliance
The Northbrook Park District provides recreation opportunities for all residents and encourages participation by everyone. Programs and services are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination. We are happy to make reasonable modifications to assist anyone with special needs who wants to participate in a program. Please contact the District in advance of a program to discuss any necessary accommodation or if you need Park District materials in a special format such as Braille, large print or audio cassette.
The Park District provides a grievance process for resolution of any ADA complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of a disability. If you have any concerns about Park District ADA compliance, contact Eileen Loftus, Director of Recreation, c/o Northbrook Park District, 545 Academy Drive, Northbrook, Illinois, 60062, phone 847-291-2960 or email eloftus@nbparks.org. The Park District is reviewing its programs and practices in regard to ADA requirements and invites comments from the public.
