Northbrook Senior Center Newsletter July

Dear Senior Center Members,

We hope this newsletter finds you all in good health and high spirits as we gear up for the wonderful season of summer! With longer days, warmer temperatures and plenty of sunshine, there’s no shortage of reasons to get out and enjoy the weather. Here are some exciting updates and events to look forward to!

Following an enjoyable trip to Drury Lane Theatre where we saw a fantastic performance of “Fiddler on the Roof,” we have summer trips planned for the Brookfield Zoo, the Chicago Architectural Tour and the Museum of Surgical Science. Register early as spots will fill up fast.

Come share your joy of reading, flair for dramatics and love of shopping this summer! Our new summer offerings include a Summer Book Club, Acting Up! Senior Acting class and monthly mall trips. We will venture out together to go shopping with our friends from the senior center. Mall trips are a great opportunity to shop with friends and enjoy lunch together – no driving necessary. Price includes transportation to and from the malls.

Barry Bradford is back! He will present about America through the ages from 100, 75 and 50 years ago over three presentations. You can register for one or all three. Read more in our article on page 4.

In addition to all that is happening at the Senior Center, there are plenty of summer events to enjoy with the Park District! We hope to see you at our Tuesdays in the Park Summer Concert Series and our second annual Grapes on the Green event. More information on these events and Paint the Prairie can be found on page 8.

Join us for our weekly walks in the park. Enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery and the company of fellow members every Wednesday morning from

10am–11am. Don’t forget your sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes! Details on page 13.

Our summer barbecue is back by popular demand. Join us on August 23 for delicious food, good music and great company.

Beat the heat with our ice cream social on July 17. Maureen Christine will be performing old favorite hits while we enjoy a variety of frozen treats. Cool off with friends while enjoying fun games and activities.

Come swim with us at our first-ever Summer Splash Swim Party on August 9 at Meadowhill Pool! Join us for a day of summer fun followed by a picnic lunch.

And finally, let’s not forget about our monthly bingo on the last Friday of each month. Come socialize, make new friends and win fun prizes. Light refreshments will be provided.

We are excited to make this summer a memorable one for our members. Remember, age is just a number, and there is no limit to the fun and adventure you can have. Let’s make the most of this season together!

Warm regards,

Nancy Eschker

“A Sacred Trust”

Historian Barry Bradford on his passion for helping people learn and connect

Historian Barry Bradford says everything is boring unless you know a lot about it — and his goal is to spark people’s interest with presentations that are engaging and full of surprises.

“People who come to hear me speak at the Northbrook Senior Center could have done what they wanted with their afternoon. There are a million options: going to a movie, playing cards with friends, visiting with grandchildren,” he said. “Instead, they chose to spend 90 minutes with me. It’s a sacred trust that they offer.”

Also a presidential award winner and motivational speaker, Bradford gives more than 200 presentations each year across the country and abroad. Last week, for example, he had seven speaking engagements: three at senior centers, one at a library, one at a company retreat and two on Zoom.

Public speaking allows him to share his passion for learning, communication and, most importantly, connection, Bradford said.

“My passion is for helping people feel connected with each other and learn together about the world around us,” he said. “I am a really high-energy speaker and a very entertaining presenter – I don’t ever stand behind the lectern and read from notes. I like getting dramatic and exciting with the material.”

Bradford’s repertoire consists of more than 400 topics, with new ones added all the time. His audiences often suggest ideas, which he is happy to tackle if they ignite his interest and he feels qualified to take on the job, he said.

Bradford’s most recent presentations at the Senior Center include “Best Movies Filmed in Chicago,” “Julia Child: Chef and Spy,” and “Diana: The Glamourous and Tragic Life and Death of a Princess.” He has also presented on

actors Paul Newman and Meryl Streep, journalist Barbara Walters, civil rights activist Medgar Evers, composer Cole Porter and comedian Bob Newhart, among many.

The key is zero in on what might not be well known about such public figures, he said. For example, most people know Harry Belafonte as a successful singer and actor, but not as many are aware he was a devoted civil rights activist and close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Northbrook Park District Recreation Manager Nancy Eschker said Bradford is a master at captivating his audiences, thanks to his in-depth knowledge of so many historical events and famous figures, including unusual ones. “We look forward to his presentations with eager anticipation every time,” she said.

Bradford is currently presenting a “Time Capsule” series that delves into looking back 100, 75 and 50 years from now. This summer’s programs at the Senior Center will be “1924: America 100 Years Ago” on June 26; “1949: America 75 Years Ago” on July 24; and “1974: America 50 Years Ago” on August 28.

“What were the top news stories of the day? What were people watching on TV? What movies were they going to? What was going on in politics? Which famous people were born and died that year? What was the top song of the year? What

Barry Bradford presents “Fabulous First Ladies” for Senior Center members on March 6, 2023.

did things cost? What won the Oscars?” he said. “Those are the things I talk about.”

Bradford’s research process is painstaking. He starts by assessing his knowledge, then does weeks of research to figure out what to highlight and how to structure his presentations. Finally, it takes him about 10 hours to create a presentation complete with audio and video clips, he said. So does he ever pick topics that flop? “It doesn’t happen often,” Bradford said, laughing. “But yes, there’s been a couple of times where I felt, ‘Boy, this is just the best topic,’ but people didn’t really respond to it.”

In all his years of speaking, Bradford said, he’s developed a soft spot for his Senior Center audiences.

“The folks who come in are so bright and so connected,” he said. “They inevitably ask questions and, depending on the topic, they will share their experiences, such as when I talk about 20th century American history. They are exceptionally warm, very receptive and honestly, they are a lot of fun to present to because they bring such terrific energy.”

It’s also important for seniors to remember that learning new things contributes to good health, Bradford said.

According to a 2023 Harvard Health Publishing article, one study found that people in their 70s and 80s who engaged with mentally stimulating activities were half as likely to develop mild cognitive impairment as those who did not. Such activities included reading, writing, crossword puzzles, card games and group discussions.

Bradford encouraged everyone, and especially seniors, to never stop learning.

“Don’t only do things and read things that you already know,” he said. “I have found this to be true for myself. I am constantly learning new things.”

Barry Bradford Presents

Our favorite historian and presidential award-winning public speaker Barry Bradford is back with a fascinating three-month series of programs. Each of these will examine a specific year in American history. We will learn the top new stories, the most important people of the time, the top movies, sports events, what things cost and so much more.

1924: America 100 Years Ago

The roaring 20s had begun, but a scandal-riddled president had died, sports were becoming an American obsession, and movies began to be a part of every day life. Jimmy Carter, Marlon Brando and Truman Capote were born, Woodrow Wilson and Vladimir Lenin died. The country was fascinated by the Leopold and Loeb murder trial, and Walt Disney produced his first cartoons!

1949: America 75 Years Ago

1949 was a transitional year in America! Harry Truman had just won a major upset victory and the people of Illinois had elected Adlai Stevenson as governor. Milton Berle and the Goldbergs ruled TV and movie attendance was reaching an all-time high! The modern civil rights era was just beginning and the world was in turmoil.
