Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Northbrook Park District residents,
I can’t believe that September will mark my first anniversary as executive director of this amazing organization Time truly flies when you are doing something you love
I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the community’s positive response to the programs and special events organized by the park district, and I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you while visiting our parks and facilities .
In addition to the newly renovated playground at Greenfield Park, I am happy to report that we are completing several additional projects including a new “tot lot” at Wescott Park and a renovation of amenities at Williamsburg Square Park Construction on the Meadowhill Aquatic Center is scheduled to begin this fall and we are in the planning phases for exciting renovations at the Leisure Center Of course, we will keep the community informed as plans move forward
This autumn, we have a terrific lineup of events and programs that we are confident will please children and adults of all ages .
The spirit of the season kicks off in September with Brewfest on September 7 at Village Green Park, an event we offer in partnership with the Village of Northbrook That same weekend, you’ll have a chance to enjoy nature and watch painters at work outdoors during our first “Paint the Prairie” event, to be held in conjunction with the Village of Northbrook’s arts commission at Techny Prairie Park and Fields
Among my family’s favorite events is Autumnfest, which will feature pumpkin picking, hayrides, music, food, arts and crafts and a lot more on October 4, all with the backdrop of nature’s beautiful fall colors
In the festive spirit of Halloween, you and your pet can show off your matching outfits for the Halloween Pet Parade, and you can participate in our good-natured Halloween 3K Fun Run, where the best costumes will receive prizes at the end . In November, show off your basketball moves during the all-ages Turkey Shoot free-throw
contest, and the little ones always enjoy displaying their creative building skills during the Thanksgiving Lego Party .
To celebrate the holiday spirit, families can enjoy Breakfast with Santa, a Holiday Craft Fair and Shine: A Chanukah Celebration in December
While we relish organizing all these special community events, we are always dedicated to offering the highest-quality programming for everyone’s recreational and fitness needs .
Families can enjoy themselves golfing at Heritage Oaks Golf Club and Anetsberger Golf Course, with classes offered for all ages and skill levels
We offer a variety of youth sports, including soccer, cycling, basketball, skateboard, lacrosse and more . Adults have just as many options, such as soccer, softball, tennis and pickleball
The Northbrook Sports Center offers skating lessons and classes for people of all ages, along with public skating, Cosmic Skating to the tune of DJ music, and special events like Kooky Spooky Skate and Skate with Santa Young children and seniors can enjoy a variety of enriching programming at the Leisure Center, while our state-of-the-art Techny Prairie Activity Center offers fitness opportunities for all ages Northbrook Theatre’s upcoming season lineup features several exciting productions: “High School Musical Jr ,” presented by Northbrook Theatre Youth Company; “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” presented by Northbrook Theatre for Young Audiences; and “A Christmas Story” for all audiences
To find out more, read through this guide or visit nbparks.org, where you can also enroll in classes and register for programs .
Wishing you an autumn filled with activities, Chris Leiner, Executive Director
IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES
Making tots happy
The “tot lot” for ages 2 to 5 at Wescott Park, 1820 Western Avenue is getting a makeover with new and colorful playground equipment and synthetic safety turf .
The 4 1-acre park’s softball fields and walking path are accessible to the public throughout the construction project
The project is scheduled to be substantially completed before the start of the school year at nearby Wescott School, with full completion by the end of August .
The park’s original playground was installed in 2005 and was reaching the end of its lifecycle Input from the community was gathered with a preliminary survey in March 2023 and another in July 2023 to help select the final playground equipment The winning design garnered 75% of the community’s votes
Access to the large playground near the school is not affected by this project .
Thanks for the input
The Northbrook Park District is considering applying for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to help fund the potential renovation of West Park, 1730 Pfingsten Road, behind Northbrook Sports Center .
West Park features seasonal soccer fields, two baseball fields, a softball field, two sand volleyball courts, three tennis courts, a playground, a drinking fountain and a walking path .
The 24-acre park’s equipment and playground have reached the end of their useful life As the park district moves to refresh those amenities, it is taking the opportunity to examine the entire park .
The community’s feedback is central to the planning process, and we are thankful for everyone who shared their thoughts by attending the community meeting and taking part in an online survey about the amenities and usage of the park .
Coming soon!
The renovation project at Williamsburg Square Park, 200 Lee Road, is well underway, with substantial completion expected later this year
The project is partially funded by a $600,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)
New park amenities will include a playground with structures for children ages 2–5 and 5–12; improvements resulting in two tennis courts, two new pickleball courts and a full basketball court; a new 20′×20′ shelter with tables; new pavement on the existing walking path; drinking fountain with bottle filler and dog bowl; park benches; fencing; and native plantings .
Accessible to all
Leisure Center visitors now have a safer way to access the building thanks to a construction project featuring a new ADA-accessible sidewalk
A new sidewalk to the south of the parking lot leads to the entrance via a striped walkway, so people no longer have to walk through the lot and driveway to enter the facility The sidewalk is accessible to wheelchair and other mobility devices, and also ADA-compliant in terms of its sloping (1:12 ratio), proper grading and inclusion of a tactile pad on the ground to aid people with visual impairments .
The project also included adding accessible parking spots on both sides of the driveway, and replacing a storm sewer grate with a new one featuring smaller openings, as not to impede wheelchairs, walking sticks and the like .
For more information... about our upcoming projects, including renovation work at Leisure Center and Meadowhill Aquatic Center, stop by our tent during National Night Out from 6pm to 9pm August 6 at Meadowhill Aquatic Center That evening, the park district will team up with the Northbrook Police Department to offer a DJ, games and raffles for the whole family
NORTHBROOK PARK DISTRICT
NEWSWORTHY NOTES
Thank you, Northbrook Bank & Trust Company, NA
The park district recently received a $30,000 check from Northbrook Bank & Trust Company, NA, a Wintrust Community Bank, as part of a partnership to provide free community events and financial scholarship opportunities for community members The generous five-year, $150,000 agreement with Wintrust helps ensure individuals, families and children can participate in programming offered by the park district . The financial support also helps the park district offer large events such as races, festivals, the Tuesdays in the Park free summer concert series, the Kids’ Fishing Derby and more, allowing thousands of people to connect and enjoy a sense of community .
Opening doors
The Northbrook Park District believes every resident should have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs . To that end, the park district offers financial scholarships for most camps, programs and memberships to assist individuals or families with demonstrated financial need . The park district works with Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook to determine need, and also offers extended payment plans for program participation The scholarship program is funded with Northbrook Bank & Trust’s generous support
John Billiter, head golf professional for the Northbrook Park District, was announced this year among the winners of the 2023 Ping Power Fitter award
The award is given to “recognize custom fitters who distinguish themselves by elevating the custom-fitting experience and demonstrating how properly fit clubs translate to better and measurable results on the course,” according to Ping .
Fun in 90 seconds
This year, the Northbrook Park District launched “Northbrook in 90,” a 90-second video series with a variety of exciting news and updates that illustrate who we are and what we do
For example, viewers have taken a tour behind the scenes of the Northbrook Theatre, which has received numerous awards, and learned about our varied arts offerings . They have gained understanding about the park district’s budgeting process and our continuous search for alternative sources of revenue, such as the $5 .65 million in grants we received in the past two years alone
“Northbrook in 90” is an initiative spearheaded by the park district’s Board of Commissioners and Executive Director Chris Leiner, and led by the park district’s marketing and communications team .
Acorn Grill’s revamp
Now under new management, Acorn Grill + Terrace has launched a revamped bar menu and refocused food menu .
The restaurant is open to the public in the clubhouse on the grounds of the park district’s Heritage Oaks Golf Club, 3535 Dundee Road It offers interior seating with beautiful views of the golf course and an expansive outdoor terrace
Jamie Tyler-Alvarez, her husband, Billy Alvarez, and their business partner, Sam Beladi, took over management in the spring
All three are employed by Open Kitchens, which has a contract with the Northbrook Park District to run Acorn Grill, and have extensive collective experience in the restaurant industry Tyler-Alvarez and her husband have owned restaurants for 15 years, including the former Taste of Cuba in Lincolnwood and currently Mima’s Taste of Cuba, a Cuban restaurant in Chicago whose fans include Cubs players . Beladi manages Ron of Japan in downtown Chicago and is a former program coordinator for the park district’s Sports Center
Specializing in American staple and comfort fare, Acorn Grill offers dining options for all palates, including shareables such as smoked buffalo wings, nachos and garlic cheese curds; a variety of handhelds, such as a California chicken sandwich and burgers featuring a half-pound patty or an Impossible vegetarian patty; entrees including a pan-seared salmon and Heritage Chicken with grilled chicken breast, garlic jus, roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables . There are also weekly specials and a kids’ menu
The bar menu features an inventive range of 12 cocktails, including the 9 Iron with Bulleit bourbon, lemon and mint, and the Birdie Spritz with Aperol, lime juice, passion fruit and prosecco; 10 beers on tap; domestics, imports, IPAs and lagers; hard seltzers; and a selection of wines from California, Oregon, Italy, France and New Zealand
The new management team plans to establish Acorn Grill as a year-round destination catering to all clientele, including families dining with young children, older adults seeking a relaxing time, coworkers unwinding with happy hour, friends enjoying a night out and sports lovers catching a game on TV
Nature as muse
The park district is thrilled to offer “Paint the Prairie,” a new event presented in conjunction with the Village of Northbrook’s arts commission for a weekend of nature, painting and more September 7–8 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields
The community is invited to watch painters at work as they capture nature’s beauty in real time while painting “en plein air” (or “outdoors” in French) .
A staple of the French impressionist movement, plein air painting has seen a resurgence in recent years, and Techny Prairie Park and Fields is the perfect setting for that, with more than 100 acres of natural prairie, serene trails, athletic fields, a golf course and a pond .
Artists 18 and over can still register to take part in “Paint the Prairie,” which will offer cash awards for the winning submissions .

The Northbrook Park District has two lightning warning systems One is located at Heritage Oaks Golf Club with ancillary units at West Park and Wood Oaks Green Park The other unit is located at Techny Prairie Park and Fields with ancillary units at the Chalet in Meadowhill Park and Village Green Park
Strike Guard monitors cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning The lightning warning system will activate when there is an immediate lightning threat in the area . When this occurs you must seek shelter immediately The unit will deactivate when the immediate threat has passed
Activation (an immediate lightning threat is present)
One uninterrupted (15-second) siren will sound and a strobe will flash .
Deactivation (the system has determined conditions are safe)
Three 5-second blasts will sound and the strobe will go off
Testing takes place on Tuesdays at 9:30am for the lightning systems.
Be sure not to confuse testing with an actual alarm! Testing will not take place if there is threatening weather .
Visit nbparks.org/status for more information .

Barry Bradford Presents – The Dick Van Dyke Show: Leading Television Into The 60s
The Dick Van Dyke Show is well remembered as one of the wittiest situation comedies in the history of television . What is less well remembered is that it was a deceptive innovator . It contrasts sharply with the situation comedies of the 1950s; in fact it ushers in a new era It was the first sitcom to be set in suburbia, to feature both work and home is a central focus, to present a modern housewife as well as the first show to feature a professional woman in the workplace This unique presentation will highlight one of the most iconic programs and early TV history . 55 Years and Older
