Momentum

Dear Northbrook Senior Center Members,

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, we’re excited to bring you the latest news and updates from our vibrant community. Fall is a season of reflection, gratitude, and new beginnings, and we have plenty in store to celebrate this wonderful time of year.

In this edition, you will find information on upcoming events, seasonal activities, and special programs designed to keep you engaged and connected. Whether you are interested in joining a crafting class, taking a scenic fall foliage walk, or simply enjoying a cup of hot apple cider with friends, there is something for everyone.

Over the summer, we enjoyed many memorable activities. Topping the list was our trip to the Chicago Architectural Tour, where the weather was perfect and the participants even better.

Maureen Christine delighted us at our ice cream social with a wonderful collection of classics from the Battle Hymn of the Republic to the Chicken Dance. Guests were all smiles as they sang along.

Barry Bradford presented a time capsule series where he shared historical events and notable people from 100, 75 and 50 years ago.

Upcoming new events to check out are Dinner Dance Party, trip to Chinatown and a Holiday Craft Fair.

We hope this newsletter brings you joy and inspiration as we embrace the beauty and warmth of the fall season together. Thank you for being a cherished part of our community!

Warm regards,

Northbrook Senior Center 3323 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062 Phone: 847-291-2995

Spotlight on Volunteers

Volunteering has numerous benefits, particularly for older adults.

Research shows that it improves physical and mental health; provides a sense of purpose; teaches valuable skills; and nurtures new and existing relationships.

Here is a look at some of our Senior Center’s most active volunteers!

Mady Fern

A retired special education teacher, Mady is the quintessential volunteer.

She has served on the Senior Advisory Committee since its inception and is well-known for her efforts to advocate for seniors and encourage them to enjoy community and camaraderie.

Her many volunteer contributions include helping during Senior Center events like the Holiday Party, Community Open House and Senior Health and Wellness Day; special family events like the Bunny Brunch and Shine Chanukah; and park district events like the outdoor Grapes on the Green.

She also serves as an usher for the Northbrook Theatre, and actively helps during food drives at the Senior Center and the Northbrook Farmers Market, where she is on the board.

Mady especially loves taking fitness classes at Techny Prairie Activity Center and the Leisure Center and encourages other seniors to do the same.

“Many people do not have anybody to help them, and I believe we need to be here for other people,” said Mady, who has two children who live out of state, along with five grandchildren. “That is how I was brought up.”

Etta Hartzman

Etta started volunteering at the Senior Center about three years ago because she likes to stay active. In fact, on a recent Friday during one of her volunteer activities, her pedometer showed 5,600 steps — all by lunchtime!

She frequently volunteers at luncheon events at the Senior Center, helping with set up and cleanup, and checking in with attendees to see

Julie Goforth, Etta Hartzman and Mady Fern pictured at the Senior Center.

what they might need. She also serves as an usher for the Northbrook Theatre.

As a member, she loves to attend live entertainment events at the Senior Center.

A retired government and health care buyer, Etta has four children, 11 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, most of whom live in the suburbs. Additionally, Etta is a member of the Saints, an organization that provides volunteer ushers for performances throughout the Chicagoland area, and volunteers for the nonprofit Wings, which assists victims of domestic violence.

“I can’t handle negativity,” she said. “There is no point in complaining. There are so many things to enjoy.”

Julie Goforth

A retired elementary school teacher, Julie has thoroughly enjoyed expanding her social life since she became a member of the Senior Center in 2016, when she moved from Nevada to be closer to her son and his family.

“I’ve made friends, and it’s just a nice place to gather and do various activities. And all the staff are very congenial,” said Julie, who also serves on the Senior Advisory Committee.

As a volunteer, Julie oversees Bunco on Tuesdays, coordinating the schedule, setting up and cleaning up. She helps during food drives and at events like Senior Health and Wellness Day. She especially enjoyed helping plant greenery and flowers by the Senior Center sign in front of the building.

Julie also has volunteered at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.

Her favorite Senior Center activities include chair yoga and “Move It and Tone It” fitness classes, and Ice Cream Social and Music events with Maureen Christine.

Senior Center News

October is Fire Safety Awareness Month!

The following fire prevention tips adapted from Ready.gov can help protect yourself, your family and your home from fire.

Cooking

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking. Turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time.

• Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.

• Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

• Keep a fire extinguisher available.

Electrical and Appliance Safety

• Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.

• If an appliance has a three-prong plug, only use it only in a three-slot outlet.

• Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker.

• Don’t overload extension cords and outlets.

Holiday Safety

• Turn off holiday lights at night or when you leave the house.

• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.

• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from flammable materials or consider using flameless candles.

• Water your Christmas tree daily and don’t let it dry out. A dry tree is more flammable.

• Make sure your tree is at least three feet away from any heat source and not blocking an exit.

Fireplaces and Woodstoves

• Inspect and clean woodstove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.

• Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks.

• Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.

Portable Space Heaters

• Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices.

• Only buy heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

• Check to make sure the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.

• Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfill it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room away from curtains and other flammable items.

Keeping Children Safe

• Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and sight, preferably in a locked cabinet.

• Never leave children unattended near operating stoves or burning candles, even for a short time.

More Fire Prevention Tips

• Never use a stove range or oven to heat your home.

• Keep combustible and flammable liquids away from heat sources.

• Portable generators should NEVER be used indoors and should only be refueled outdoors and in well ventilated areas.

Barry Bradford Presents – The Dick Van Dyke Show: Leading Television Into The 60s

The Dick Van Dyke Show is well remembered as one of the wittiest situation comedies in the history of television. What is less well remembered is that it was a deceptive innovator. It contrasts sharply with the situation comedies of the 1950s; in fact it ushers in a new era. It was the first sitcom to be set in suburbia, to feature both work and home as a central focus, to present a modern housewife as well as the first show to feature a professional woman in the workplace. This unique presentation will highlight one of the most iconic programs and early TV history.

Barry Bradford Presents – The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Leading Television Into The 70s

Mary Tyler Moore, the breakout star of the Dick Van Dyke show, helped to create one of the most influential, important, and funny situation comedies in TV history. It broke ground in presenting issues related to the lives of women in the new decade and did so in a way that was insightful and often hilarious. Cultural historian Barry Bradford will lead us through a fascinating look at the development, evolution, and lasting impact of the classic show. Utilizing interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and numerous video clips, this multimedia presentation will deepen your love and appreciation for The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
