Hello Current and Former Senior Center Members!
My name is Eilleen Gabriel-Galán, and I am excited to join the Northbrook Park District’s team as your new Recreation Supervisor of Adult and Senior Programs! I have a strong aging services and volunteer management background with over twenty-five years of experience in the field of gerontology. I also have a unique combination of experiences in planning and organizing activities for older adults, facility operations, employee, volunteer and budget management and food service. It is my hope to create a destination that will offer you a variety of fun, adventurous and creative programs, activities and special events that you can enjoy while also offering the opportunity to try something new.
I invite you and your friends to join me on this journey. I would love to meet you, get to know
you and to hear your thoughts and ideas for the Senior Center. All ideas are welcome, and I am open to listening to what you have to say including the good, the bad and any constructive feedback.
You may not know me yet, but you soon will. I am a patient, caring, empathetic and active listener who is flexible and willing to learn and try new things.
I am also a team player who can appreciate the skills and strengths that others bring. I look forward to collaborating with you, the volunteers, staff members and our community partners to support your needs and interests.
On Thursday, November 18, from 11am-3pm we will have an Open House at the Leisure Center. Please accept this as my personal invitation and see page 3 for additional information. Again, I look forward to meeting you and to welcoming all new and returning members. These are exciting times to create endless possibilities and I can’t wait to have you join me on this journey!
Sincerely,
Eilleen Gabriel-Galán

Senior Center FAQs
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
Will the current drop-in schedule be the same?
Yes. The current drop-in schedule, listed on page 5, will be held at the Leisure Center. As Senior Center members return to programs, Eilleen GabrielGalán, the new Recreation Supervisor of Adult and Senior Programs will evaluate current offerings and implement a plan for the future after receiving feedback from our senior community.
Will programs be in the same rooms at the Leisure Center?
As programs are moved back to the Leisure Center there will be changes to some locations based on the number of current participants and other programs offered in the building.
Is the Library open?
Yes! The library will be open from 9am-4pm as a true drop-in location to check out a book, sit and meet friends, or a place to be when you want to arrive early or stay after a class to socialize. Coffee will be available. Classes and drop-in programs will not be scheduled in the library Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm.
Why weren’t programs moved back in September?
For the 2020-21 school year, the Leisure Center was home to School District 27’s Kindergarten classes. As part of the agreement, the School District had the option to return this year if the Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) put guidelines in place that would require the need for additional space for physical distancing among students. With the implementation of the mask mandate and school just getting underway, the Park District was unsure if the School District would be returning to the Leisure Center. While District 27 does not anticipate needing to return this school year, they will continue to have the option to do so should the ISBE change their current guidance.
Are masks required?
At the time of this publication, masks are required for everyone while indoors. When eating or drinking while seated, masks may be removed but distance from others should be maintained.
There are children in the building for our preschool program, classes during the day, and after 4pm in the Senior Center rooms. Leisure Center staff will minimize interaction during the Senior Center hours and continue to implement cleaning between scheduled programs.
Will there be fitness classes at the Leisure Center? Will they be the same classes?
In 2022, a limited number of health and wellness programs will be added at the Leisure Center. The programs will be planned for older adults and will not be the same as group fitness classes at Techny Prairie Activity Center. Prior to the opening of TPAC, the fitness classes at the Leisure Center were offered to everyone but were often viewed as Senior Center classes because of the participants who chose to register. New in 2022 will be health and wellness programs targeted for Senior Center participants. The fitness team is still planning the classes and these fee-based programs will be led by highly qualified, certified instructors. Some possible topics of these special programs could include exercises to help improve or lessen joint or arthritis pain and fall prevention. Classes currently held at TPAC such as W.O.W., Chair Yoga and Zumba Gold, will not be duplicated at the Leisure Center.

Senior Center Updates
If I am a current TPAC member, do I have to pay for health and wellness programs at the Leisure Center?
Possibly. Some health and wellness programs at the Leisure Center may be included in TPAC membership. In this case, a TPAC member would not need to pay. Other programs may incur a fee for TPAC members. A reduced fee for Senior Center members for health and wellness programs held at the Leisure Center is under consideration. More information will be available in January.
Will the window at the Senior Center office be open?
At this time, the window will remain closed. The window was closed to allow staff in the office to work and plan for Senior Center programs, events, classes and trips. In addition, this change has allowed us to keep membership fees to a minimum by reducing duplicate services in the facility. As members return, the Park District is looking for opportunities to have the window open and staffed by volunteers during peak hours of operation. All registration and payments will continue to be taken at the main registration desk located just down the hall in the heart of the Leisure Center.

TPAC Membership Options and Rates
I am a member of the Senior Center. Does my Senior Center membership include use of TPAC?
No. TPAC membership is separate from the Senior Center membership. Members of the Senior Center need to be a TPAC member or pay a daily fee to attend group fitness classes, open gyms or use the fitness floor or track at TPAC.
Will group fitness classes be returning to the Leisure Center?
All Northbrook Park District group fitness classes will be held at TPAC for the foreseeable future. Leisure Center health and wellness classes will be added in 2022.
Do I need a membership to attend group fitness classes at TPAC?
There are two options. The first is to have a full membership which gives free access to regular group fitness classes, use of the track, participation in all open gyms and use of the fitness floor. The other option is to pay the daily fee. Daily admission includes group fitness classes, use of the track, use of the fitness floor, and open gym participation
on that day. Daily admission is being offered at a discounted rate of $12 for Northbrook residents and $15 for non-residents for November and December.
I used to have a swipe card for the fitness classes at Leisure Center, can I buy one for TPAC?
Swipe cards are not available for group fitness classes at TPAC. Throughout the year there may be an occasional special that offers the use of a card, but it will not be a regular option. Swipe cards are available for open gyms.
Why aren't classes exclusively for seniors offered at TPAC?
TPAC group fitness classes are open to all members. The weekly schedule includes over 30 classes per week ranging from yoga to cycling to cardio and strength. Some group fitness classes are designed to be low impact and suitable for active agers which would be perfect for a senior participant. All instructors in all classes will show options for all fitness levels. For advice on which classes are most appropriate for your interests and abilities, contact Rachel Tandy at 847-897-6161.
